"We have evil in us, all of us do, and my evil just happened to come out because of the circumstances," said serial killer Aileen Wuornos in an interview conducted shortly before her execution in 2002. Director Nick Broomfield, in this sequel to his previous documentary Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer, delves further into Wuornos's horrific childhood (including an interview with her biological mother) and follows the appeals process as her case goes through its final efforts. But the movie's core are the fascinating, devastating interviews with Wuornos herself, alternately lucid and delusional as she obsesses about the police, whom she believes allowed her murders to happen to increase the potential for profit from movies and books about the case. Anyone who's seen Monster, based on Wuornos's story, will find the real woman even more compelling and frightening than Charlize Theron's award-winning portrayal. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Amazing and tragic story.......2006-03-03

I honestly wonder how much of her final tirade was real (at least in her mind) or just another story she made up to get attention.

She appeared to have been quite intelligent, so who knows what she might have become had she been raised under different circumstances?

I had to crack up when her friend Dawn said she believes homosexuality was only invented in recent years. lol

5 out of 5 stars The Real "Monster".........2006-02-25

After seeing the movie Monster which was based on the life of the first female serial killer Aileen Wuornos, I was interested in seeing the real Aileen herself speaking of the murders she commited. This film does a great job of delivering to us a glimpse into the childhood and mind of a disturbed woman. The interviews are great and Aileen holds nothing back while talking to Nick. We get to see actual footage of her trials and of her proclaiming her innocence to admitting the she lied about being raped and having to kill in self defense. We are able to look into her black eyes and see the rage she felt. We see interviews with her few close friends who explain the terrible things that happened in Aileen's life that led her to Florida and eventually to being a hooker. She's labeled a serial killer because as she said, "she has a number". She murdered 7 men with the motive being to take their money and their vehicle. She admits that she had to kill them so they wouldn't go to the police. Aileen always believed that the police knew it was her killing these men but that they let her kill so they could make money off of her. However way you want to look at it, Aileen was a murderer but also a victim of circumstance. It is almost sad to see her speaking of her execution right until the day before it took place. Aileen came clean before her execution in 2002 by lethal injection after serving many years on death row. In her own words...."You have to kill Aileen Wuornos or she will kill again". Also, I must say what a Excellent job Charlize Theron did playing Aileen in the movie Monster. It is no wonder she won an award for the movie. This DVD of real interviews is very revealing and very interesting for anyone who is curious about the real "Monster".

5 out of 5 stars A MUST SEE !!!.......2006-01-12

This is Mr. Broomfield's sequel to "The Selling of a Serial Killer". Both are very well researched. It isn't often that you are treated to the facts as they really are. We are usually served the psycho-babble of distortion which is not present in either of these films. After viewing these films one is left feeling that maybe, just maybe there might be something wrong with our system of justice. When someone (Tye) is an accomplice to murder,an accessory after the fact and received stolen property (victim's cars and cash) can walk away with movie and book deals and their freedom there is a serious problem with the system. This movie is very well done and left me feeling that I knew Aileen Wournos as a person not as a serial killer.
I highly recommend this movie and the prequel.

4 out of 5 stars Get to know the real Aileen.......2005-04-04

Interesting look at the life of Aileen Wuronos Serial Killer. Powerful informative Documentary about the life and trials of Aileen. It tells her whole story from when she was born up until the last minute of her death. Covers all aspects and you get to meet the real Aileen. Charlize Theron did a great job portraying her in Monster but this is true to life and in your face reality. We get to see Aileens motives for killing , why she did it, how she feels etc. At times you feel for her and think this is a real human being and does she deserve this, at other times one could think she might be mentally ill due to her accusations that the police knew she was going to commit her crimes. We get to see her anger, hate, fear, pain and all the human aspects of her personality. At times she can come off as normal and engaging and at other times full of hate and anger. We get to find out her last meal, see her last interviews and know what song she requested at her funeral. This is a must see if you liked Monster. 4 Stars.

2 out of 5 stars Rambling, Tendentious.......2004-12-30

The interviewer has an obvious agenda; he is anti-death penalty. He seeks to portray Wuornos as insane. The reality is much more complex than that.

5 out of 5 stars Well-developed story that's worth your money and watching time.......2007-02-12

The plot is well-developed to keep you stay still with the screen so that you cannot miss any scene. A good movie that deserves to be owned and kept in your priceless collection.

3 out of 5 stars FATHER COP.......2007-01-28

Although based on Arthur Hailey's bestseller, DETECTIVE doesn't live up to its pedigree.
The story gets muddled at times; a former priest turned detective is assigned to track down a serial killer who kills elderly couples in some sort of religious frenzy. His partner and lover is the Councilman's daughter, and the cop himself is estranged from his wife and son. Their personal crises intermingle with the murder plot, and although you will maintain your interest, it's a little long in the tooth with only average performances.
Tom Berenger as the detective gives a relatively dispassionate performance; Annabeth Gish phones in her partner performance' Cybill Shepherd as the wife gives the most effective performance but she's not in the movie much. Charles Durning and Sean O'Bryan round out the cast. This could have been much better with a shorter script and more impassioned performances from its leads.

5 out of 5 stars Detective is worthy your time.......2006-01-01

Tom Berenger's newest release, "Detective" is an engrossing but long movie with excellent character development, exciting episodes, and a very good and emotional secondary theme with Tom's usual stellar performance. I really recommend this DVD. It is taken from a series (I believe) but well-directed and edited. I especially admired the performance by Sybil Shepard as the detective's ex-wife who loves him deeply. Their scenes with the counselor are especially effective and ring true. You will watch this one over and over again - I did - mainly, for me anyway, because Tom is in almost every scene and who can't love that - plus it is great entertainment all the way!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-12-24

Came upon this movie quite by chance when surfing Amazon.com. It arrived yesterday. Just finished watching it. Even though it is approx 3 hours in length, it kept us spellbound right to the very end. This movie is proof that one can have an interesting mystery without all the foul language. Hightly recommend this one.

3 out of 5 stars Seeing Something Very Evil: Atmospheric But May Not Be Exactly Logical.......2006-03-02

`Double Vision' is an interesting mixture of Taiwanese culture and occult thriller. The basic story goes like Thomas Harris novels, with a series of gory deaths in the city of Taipei, but there is another, more familiar aspect in `Double Vision' so-called buddy-buddy cop drama.

The film's star is Tony Leung Ka Fai ("L'Amant") playing Taiwanese police detective Huang Huo-tu tormented by his bitter past. Huang Huo-tu investigates strange cases of deaths in Taipei. The corpses are all unnatural - one of them looks as if frozen, and another burnt, although the rooms where they were found are all intact. One FBI agent Kevin Richter (David Morse, "The Green Mile") flies to Taiwan to help the investigatation of the local police about the bizarre deaths, but the truths turn out much more astonishing than standard thrillers.

`Double Vision' poses more questions and mysteries than it can explain in its two-hour running time. Though FBI profiler appears, the film's strength does not lie in his scientific methods to analyze the mysterious case. Actually I still am not sure if an FBI agent would be really sent to Taiwan even in his capacity as advisor, and also David Morse's slightly bland acting fails to convince us of the situation.

In fact, the merit of `Double Vision' can be found in its Taiwanese culture, especially its blend of the bureaucratic system of the modern police and the religious background including Taoism which has a long history. One (probably) fictional sect of Taoists plays an important role in the film, of which logics are not always clear to us in spite of the film's well-presented dark tone. The pace is always good, and you seldom get boring while seeing some surprises, but as the film reaches its conclusion, it tries to show too many things at the same time. And though the film's creepy occult elements have considerable appeal, the relations between the two cops look strangely like those of Hollywood films.

`Double Vision' is most appealing when it uses its cultural backdrop to the full, in order to set up the mysteries. The film's best part is its overtones and occult mysteries that refuse to be solved in a simple and normal way. And like any other thriller, when it is solved, it leaves holes in the logics that preceded the conclusion. Or maybe I am missing something in its logics. I don't know. For all (or because of) still unanswered mysteries, the film is worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Horror Thriller Taking Place In Taiwan.......2006-02-28

For those viewers looking to enter the world of subtitled horror so as to enjoy the vast array of offerings from Asia, Spain, South America, France and increasingly places like Scandinavia, Russia and so on, "Double Vision" is a great place to start, being filmed partly in Taiwanese and partly in English. And oh yes, I almost forgot: it's also among Asia's best offerings.

"Double Vision" starts out as a first-rate police thriller with supernatural overtones and gradually transforms into a first rate metaphysical horror movie with suspense movie/crime movie elements, all the while maintaing a strong and expertly-done tone of drama. A series of murders is being committed in a Taiwanese city, the victims having no apparant link, and the ways they've been killed having only one thing in common: they should, logically, be impossible.

An American expert in particularly difficult-to-solve crimes (David Morse, of "The Green Mile" and "Hearts In Atlantis") is brought in to partner with Taiwan cop Tony Leung Ka Fai (of "Three....Extremes" {aka "Saam Gaang Yi"} and current Asian hit "The Myth") who's haunted both by some past on-the-job trauma and the tremendous strain it's put on his family life. Morse's character is a man who, although friendly, seems to have few attachments in his personal life, and watching him become friends with Ka Fai's character, and close to people he meets through his new temporary partner, is a glue that really brings the film together, really brings all the characters to life, and really makes you care what happens to them.

There is little hint in the first half of the movie of what unexpected turns the investigation is going to take, so I'll refrain from discussing it here. But it gets weird, cryptic, and it's something you really have to watch closely to catch everything. Highly, highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Expecting something like Ju-on or Ringu? Don't........2005-01-10

Well if I'd ever had the illusion that Asian horror films were inherently superior, Double Vision set me straight. It was an interesting way to kill an evening, I'll grant you, but only just.

Plot summary: a series of bizarre deaths in Taiwan baffle local investigators, so an American FBI agent Kevin Richter (David Morse) is called in to solve the murders. He's the topmost serial killer expert in the field, but even he cannot explain the seemingly supernatural circumstances surrounding the crime scenes. For example In one case a businessman froze to death in his office - in the middle of a heatwave; the mistress of a prominent official telephones the fire department and is later found burned to death - with no sign of a fire in her apartment. Richter's partner, a local cop, has less trouble believing that something supernatural is behind them, and on that angle he persuades him to investigate a local cult. They discover increasingly disturbing evidence that there are demonic forces at work in Taiwan.

My big letdown with this film started when I realized that the story was very slowly paced and not nearly as creepy as the trailer would have led me to believe. It's clear that the director is going for an atmospheric buildup in a tradition similar to that of Ringu; it just doesn't pay off well. Another sore point for me was the way that Richter's relationship with his Taiwanese partner was sketched in halfheartedly, as if it was something conventionally expected in a "cop buddy" flick , but not important enough to take more than a whirl at. The usual clichés apply there, like the American being overly blunt and disrespectful, the local trying to reign in his embarrassing partner. Finally, the explanation for all the mystery seems a little bit trite compared to what my imagination was conjuring throughout the film. Trust me, you'll be disappointed.

With good production values and a stellar setup, Double Vision is a study in unfulfilled potential. It wasn't badly done, but fans of Ju-On and Ringu should steer clear.
-Andrea, aka Merribelle

4 out of 5 stars Quite good, actually..........2004-11-12

First off, it's obvious that David Morse was just brought in to broaden Double Vision's international appeal but his presence doesn't take away from the intensity and mystery of the film. In truth, the involvement of the FBI is kind of irrelevant (you'll get a feeling it's just added upon).

The real star here is Tony Leung (the other one, not the Infernal Affairs/Hero Tony Leung). His portrayal of a troubled Foreign Services officer is compelling, and his tortured performance really drives the movie.

It's basically X-Files, mixed with an Eastern-style Seven and a temple massacre that predated Kill Bill, Double Vision is an enjoyable thriller with moody cinematography and excellent production values.

The deliberate pacing is perfect for this type of genre. It builds up the creepiness factor, while fully realizing the conflicts of Tony Leung's character.

Although the end is not as tight as the first 3/4s of the movie, Double Vision is a thriller worthy of purchase.

1 out of 5 stars Another Cheap Taiwanese Knockoff.......2004-10-25

Double Vision was Taiwan's most expensive production ever (at just over a million bucks) and directed by Chen Kuo-fu, who did the wonderfully quirky The Personals. This is basically a clone of Se7en with a supernatural twist and a marketable Hollywood almost-star David Morse. Sadly, all that effort only goes to prove that Taiwan is just as capable of making soulless cinematic knockoffs as well as Hollywood. This film combines a muddled script filled with cring-inducing dialogues, plus indecisive direction and mostly stiff acting into a mess with a high production value. It tried very hard to be very moody, but only ends up being manipulative and unsubtle. Worst of all is that awful ending, with its sappy message spelled out literally for all audience to see. Argh, it makes me embarrassed to be a Taiwanese ex-pat. Truth be told, the story is actually kind of interesting, and the film could have been somewhat enjoyable if it wasn't executed without any care for plausibility and so much care for melodrama. BTW, can someone tell me how David Morse can walk into a room and dig up the precise piece of evidence without knowing where to look?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "Do you wish to make a confession or not?".......2006-11-20

From The Pete Walker Collection comes the film The Confessional (1975) aka House of Mortal Sin, adapted for the screen by David McGillivray (House of Whipcord, Frightmare) and directed by Pete Walker (House of Whipcord, Frightmare, Schizo), starring Anthony Sharp (A Clockwork Orange), Susan Penhaligon (The Land That Time Forgot), Stephanie Beacham (Inseminoid, "Dynasty"), and Norman Eshley (Blind Terror). Also appearing is Hilda Barry (Carry on Loving), Stewart Bevan (The Ghoul), Julia McCarthy (Erik the Viking), and Walker regular Sheila Keith (House of Whipcord, Frightmare).

The film begins we see a distressed young woman returning home, after which she runs to her room and locks the door. Her parents, concerned for her welfare, try to talk to her through the door, but after finally breaking in the door, they discover she had thrown herself from the window for reasons unknown. After this we meet a young blonde woman named Jenny Welsh (Penhaligon), who lives with her older sister Vanessa (Beacham), the latter who runs a boutique of sorts. After Jenny has a chance meeting with someone named Father Bernard Cutler (Eshley), whom apparently was involved with Vanessa prior to entering the priesthood, we learn Jenny's having some man trouble with her live-in boyfriend Terry (Bevan), particularly in his penchant for playing the field. Jenny goes around to the church to talk with Bernard, but ends up given confession to Father Xavier Meldrum (Sharp), who seems just a bit too interested in the various intimate details of her relationship with Terry. Turns out Father Meldrum tape records the confessions he takes, and then, in some instances, uses them to blackmail people into doing his bidding. Also, Meldrum has taken a particular interest in Jenny, wanting to do more than help her save her soul, if you get my drift. Jenny relates what happened to slimy Terry, who tries to retrieve the audiotape, but meets his demise at the business end of a viciously swung incense decanter (it sure is convenient having a graveyard just outside the church, but the question now is how to explain the fresh mound). Jenny makes various claims about Meldrum, but those around her, including her sister, believe Jenny's having some sort of breakdown as Meldrum is a clever sort, and manages to cover his `indiscretions' quite well. She does eventually meet a kindred spirit in the form of the mother of the girl who killed herself at the beginning of the film (seems the girl had dealings with Meldrum prior her death, and, as a result, her mother has since become suspicious of Meldum), but the wily priest, always one step ahead, begins meting out his own form of divine retribution.

So far I've seen a handful of Pete Walker's film, and in comparison, The Confessional stacks up pretty well. It's no Frightmare or House of Whipcord, but it's certainly better than The Flesh and Blood Show or The Comeback. One main difference I noticed in this film compared to most of the other Walker features I've seen is while there are some odd vestiges of a `whodunit' factor here, there's not much question as far as who the murderer is, and his motive. One element I did find in common with Walker's other features was the amount of depth within the story. All the main characters are fleshed out very well making it easy for the viewer to become entangled in what plays out on the screen. As with his other films the pacing does tend to crawl along, but I found a lot of enjoyable Hitchcock-like moments throughout the feature, especially given the fact I wasn't expending energy trying to discern the identity of the killer. One aspect of the story I really enjoyed was how Father Meldrum, who was a real sicko, would act all creepy and such when alone with Jenny, but when someone else would show up, he make it appear like she was some sort of obsessive nutcase whom he was only trying to help, and this usually worked given his stature with the small community. There's a lot more elements to the story I didn't discuss (one of them questioned celibacy requisite of the priesthood, both on a general and specific level). I thought all the performers did well, the standouts being Anthony Sharp and Sheila Keith who played the character of Miss Brabazon, Father Meldrum's creepy live-in housekeeper who wore an eye patch and cared (if you can call it that) for Meldrum's geriatric mother. Despite the lack of mystery within the story there's still a good deal of suspense tied to the various characters not believing Jenny's story and Meldrum's abilities to conceal his peccadilloes. There are some interesting murders sprinkled throughout, some of the more memorable ones including rosary beads, tainted communion wafers, and a flaming incense decanter. There's really not much in terms of nekkidness, other than a quick behind shot of Miss Penhaligon. All in all while this isn't my favorite Pete Walker film (that's a toss up between Frightmare and House of Whipcord, both of which feature Sheila Keith much more prominently), The Confessional does rate higher than some of his others, particularly The Flesh and Blood Show, which was lukewarm, at best, in my opinion.

The picture on the Media Blasters/Shriek Show DVD release, presented in widescreen anamorphic (1.85:1), looks decent, but know there's plenty of white specking at both the beginning and end of the film. There are also occasional visual flaws throughout, but nothing seriously detrimental to viewing. The picture is far from perfect, but I've seen a lot worse. As far as the audio, it's available in both original mono and a newly master Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, both of which come across very well. In terms of extras there's some worthwhile features available, including a audio commentary track with director Walker, moderated by author Jonathan Rigby, a featurette entitled `Courting Controversy: An Insider's Look at the Films of Pete Walker', another one titled `Sheila Keith: A Nice Old Lady?' which provides a loving tribute to one of the more prominent performers often found in Walker's movies, film notes (with incredibly small text), and trailers for other Walker films available on DVD including The Flesh and Blood Show (1972), Die Screaming, Marianne (1971), Frightmare (1974), The Comeback (1978), and House of the Whipcord (1974)...odd I didn't see one here for The Confessional, though.

    Product Description

Dr. Edgar V. Epperly has researched the Villisca axe murders since 1955. His visit to the Moore murder house for the first time in 15 years was caught on camera. Moving from room to room during the early stages of renovation (1994), Epperly describes the crime scene and early investigation on the morning of June 10, 1912. A severe summer thunderstorm rolls in as the detailed tour progresses. Plus: In 1917, the Reverend Lyn George Jacklin Kelly confessed to the Villisca axe murders. Was he guilty or just obsessed with the case? Follow Dr. Epperly on a midnight walk from the manse where the little minister stayed to the Josiah B. Moore house as he recounts the quirky clergyman's confession of mass homicide by lamplight. Bonus fearures include a lamplight Q & A with Epperly where he discusses a serial killer theory and other details of his decades-long investigation. In the behind-the-scenes footage the filmmakers are puzzled by a microphone that shuts off every time a kerosene lamp is lit for the spooky tour.

Well, yeah, there are some tense moments, but it's just not as good as Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. And nobody comes close to Michael Rooker's performance, no matter how good they are -- and this guy's pretty good. All-in-all a worthy effort but Henry still leads. Plus, this is a PAL disk, so most people aren't going to be able to see it anyway.

    DO NOT BUY THIS DISC!

I watched this years ago on VHS and was very impressed. Owning a multisystem DVD player, I figured I would go ahead and get the PAL version.

The movie is not only severely cut, missing important scenes and lines, but whenever someone curses, the volume goes way down. Absolutely AWFUL!

4 out of 5 stars one of the best serial killer flicks ever made.......2006-07-22

The late, great art director Robert A. Burns (who worked on the original TCM) turns in a perfectly convincing performance as a serial killer. Too bad he didn't do more acting. I'll say this as well: one of the biggest reasons the 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre works so well is due to the genius of Robert A. Burns' magnificent art direction.

Director/writer Mark Blair shows tremendous talent here as well. This is another talented filmmaker who is no longer around--and it's a great loss, because this guy, with this one film, puts so many of these "masters of horror" directors to
    shame.

The only (slight) negative is that the film was shot a bit on the dark side, and you won't find any extras on the DVD, other than a couple of lame trailers for a couple of lame flicks.

More horror fans should know about this one. Even though the gore isn't piled on, you get a more authentic portrait of real life serial killer Henry Lee Lucus than they showed in the John McNaughton version.

Still, both films worked for me.

4 out of 5 stars Best of all the serial killer films.......2005-05-11

Precisely because of its "artless" low-key low-budget qualities this is the best of all the serial killer films. It's creepy, sleazy, sordid, grotesque, disgusting & banal - exactly as the real people & events depicted must be. The casting is perfectly on-target as are the acting, sets, etc. If you want a taste of what life is like for these guys this must be as close as it gets.

4 out of 5 stars Scary because it is realistic.......2005-05-02

I had seen this movie on cable many years ago, couldn't forget it, and searched to find it.

No-it doesn't have a succinct (predictable) plot line. It is the randomness of the murders that is truly cautionary. A girl hitchhiking, a woman whose car has stalled, a woman with a broken air-condition, and so on.

The scenes are intense. Generally the women become leery-and their fear is palpable. They try to extract themselves from the situation, but generally fail.

The scene where a girl is attempting to escape through a field had me on the edge of my seat. As a matter of fact, every scene where I could see a murder coming did. "Hollywood" horror flicks do not affect me so. I routed for the escape of the victims, but to little or no avail.

In my estimation, the directing was right on, as was the acting. I prefer realism for intensity.

This movie stands on its own. Why must it follow the book?
