Despite an abundance of gaping plot holes, White Noise serves up enough spooky atmosphere to make it worth a look-see for fans of supernatural thrillers. Even when hampered with a shoddy, clumsily written screenplay, Michael Keaton brings professional conviction to his role as a grieving widower who is introduced to the mysterious (and according to paranormal researchers, highly documented) existence of EVP, or Electronic Voice Phenomenon, which allows the dead to communicate (one-way only, it seems) from the great beyond, through images and voices recordable on a variety of electronic media such as VCRs, computers, etc. Seeking contact with his recently deceased wife, Keaton finds dire warnings of evil in the afterlife, with connections (all too convenient) to killings and disappearances in his Vancouver, British Columbia vicinity. British TV director Geoffrey Sax brings slick style to this hokum, and a few moments of genuine eeriness, but you may find yourself giggling too much to appreciate the highlights. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
DISTURBING.......2007-06-26
I purchased this dvd without knowing what it was about. After viewing it, I thought it was more disturbing than scarey. But disturbing is thought provoking and, therefore, a good thing. It is a ghost story involving EVP and dark spirits.
The only thing I really did not like about White Noise was the ending. I hate it when dark spirits win.
What an awfully crafted idea, to such a rich, inventive topic........2007-05-03
Another 'no' star!!!
It's amazing to see how many shallow and uncreative people there are that watch these types of movies, and actually think they are, err, good?
Take a theory like EVP's, an awesome stack of countless, supposed EVP tangible evidence, and finally bring it to someone in Hollywood, and well, what do you expect Universal to do with it? I mean Michael Keaton, are you kidding me? It is time for him to hang it up. Another The Ring, Scream, Dimension Type film disaster....the only thing not worse than the price tag of $18.00 when I first bought it, was the extras (ie. leading authorities on EVP'sand the EVP sessions that were live) That, without question, was the only thing worth wasting your time on.
Geoffrey Sax go teach at film school.
Not thrilled.......2007-03-30
Great effects but White noise was a disappointment because they are not discribing what white noise REALLY is. They really pushed the envelope on this. Suspension of disbelief takes a back seat when true fact is distorted. though Michael Keaton as usual..is excellent.
Mystery and Chills Convincingly Done.......2007-02-28
I expected to not like this film when it first came out. I don't know if other reviewers jaded me or whether I thought this might be a cheap horror flick or maybe both, but I didn't think this film would be very good, so I waited for it to come out on video and rented it. At a mild PG-13 rating my whole family could watch this little chiller that was creatively directed, convincingly acted by Keaton, who was long overdue for some serious recognition as a dramatic actor (check him out in the outstanding Clean and Sober), and the script, while faulty at times, goes down rather easily. There are some genuinely scary moments in "White Noise", but much focus is on the eerie atmoshere and unfolding mystery of the story. I liked this film very much for the same reasons why I liked The Ring (Widescreen Edition) and The Grudge.
I have always enjoyed horror flicks that rely more on atmosphere, story, and acting, than actual on screen violence and gore even though I have gotten a kick out of a few of those (Night of the Living Dead, Suspiria). This is a superior little thriller that I'm glad I was initially wrong about in my first judgment of it. This is a chilling movie that has repeat value.

This flick is 1 hour and 38 minutes long. When it gets to 1:28, just turn it off. The premise is great, the setup is strong, and then it falls completely apart in the last 10 min. It's a really big let down, and total lack of thread to tie events together. I'm fine with mystery and loose ends, but the plot resolution attempts to indicate an association without telling you why you should care. Not an intuitive leap at all.
Makes me sad cos it really was going along so well.
