Dan Curtis, the creator and producer of such out-of-the-ordinary TV classics as the willfully offbeat gothic soap opera Dark Shadows and the proto-X-Files series The Night Stalker, remains best known for the Zuni fetish doll that terrorizes Karen Black in Trilogy of Terror. The wild-eyed doll, with its snapping jaws and screeching yells, borders on camp, yet its relentless attacks and single-minded, homicidal drive make it an absolutely terrifying figure in the climactic chapter of this trilogy of short films based on stories by Richard Matheson. In the first story, "Julie," Karen Black plays a mousy college professor blackmailed by an obsessed student, and in "Millicent and Therese" she plays sisters consumed with an intense hatred of one another that comes to a head when their father dies. Both of these films conclude with Twilight Zone-ish twists and are more clever than gripping, kept alive mostly by Black's gleefully theatrical performances. With "Amelia," however, Black delivers an almost solo show, playing against the famous Zuni fetish doll, a wooden statue that comes to life when the a protective chain slips off the figure and releases the evil spirit. Curtis turns her apartment into a claustrophobic cage trapping the increasingly hysterical woman as the unstoppable figure hacks at her legs with a kitchen knife and chomps down on her arms and neck with the relentless intensity of a bulldog. It's still a classic of small-screen horror. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Legendary producer / director Dan Curtis (DARK SHADOWS, THE NIGHT STALKER) teams up with writers Richard Matheson (I AM LEGEND, THE TWILIGHT ZONE) and William F. Nolan (LOGAN'S RUN, BURNT OFFERINGS) to present three tales of horrific suspense in this made-for-television anthology that also showcases the tremendous acting talent of Karen Black (FIVE EASY PIECES, THE DAY OF THE LOCUST), who plays no less than four distinct roles. In "Julie," an aggressive college student seduces and ultimately blackmails his seemingly shy English professor. In "Millicent and Therese," two polar-opposite sisters become increasingly hell-bent on the undoing of one another. And in "Amelia," a woman falls prey to a murderous Zuni fetish doll.

trilogy of terror.......2007-08-31
one of the best 70s made for tv movies you will ever see what a scary treat
Unforgettable Terror.......2007-08-30
As long as I live I will not forget the image of the Zuni doll that came to life and attacked Karen Black in this series of short stories. The other episodes in this set are certainly worth watching and show Black's range of talent. But the images of the doll and what transpires in the final moments of the movie will haunt you forever. I highly recommend this DVD if you enjoy classic horror movies.
Great classic movie.......2007-07-12
This movie was great when I saw it decades ago and it's still great. There's now a sequel but I don't think that one's on DVD yet. It's a horror trilogy using the same actress in each but playing a different character in different stories in each so don't expect a connection between any of them, there isn't supposed to be one, just three horror stories. The remake is similar but I don't recall if all 3 stories are the sequels to the ones on the original DVD (since I only cared about my favorite movie, which happens to be depicted on the cover). That particular story is about a voodoo type doll that comes to life if it's chain/belt falls off. The sequel DOES continue THAT story line.
Tour-de-force for Karen Black........2007-06-23
A fondly remembered cult classic televison movie produced in 1975. A must have for fans of good story telling and of course admirers of the excellent Karen Black. The audio commentary is both informative and entertaining and the featurettes with Karen and Richard Matheson are top-knotch. Fantastic print.
Trilogy of Terror is classic stuff.......2007-06-01
I watched this growing up as a kid.Channel 9 and 11 played this late at night. That Fetish doll was a hoot! All three storie were good but the last one was the best.If you want to see more of the dolls check out Attack of the Beast Creatures. This one, there's an entire island full of them.

Corny, but great for 'tweens.......2007-08-24
This movie is corny, corny, corny. Enough T&A to be classified classic horror, but the vampires are a far cry from the seductive and mysterious vamps of yester-year.
And why the hell does dude keep coming back as a vampire with a conscience, and lame sense of humor...?!
Not bad at all!.......2007-08-14
The 80's may have been the decade I grew up in, but I'm far from
nostalgic for its (often) mediocre movie offerings. I'm not a big fan
of film favorites like Sixteen Candles or Goonies. There's nothing
wrong with these films; it's just a matter of taste.
Until I read the back of the DVD case, I hadn't heard anything about
this film. Nothing. The plot seemed fairly standard, "a group of
fraternity pledges head for the seedy side of the city in search of
strippers and discover a sinister spot called The After Dark Club." It
was touted by Anchor Bay as a "horror comedy." At $4 how could I say
no?
The parts that really impressed me were as follows. First, there was
the demon-esquire vampire makeup. I'm always a sucker (pun not intended.
I shouldn't have even drawn attention to it, really) for good character
designs, even if the film itself is mediocre (example: Return of the
Living Dead 3). The vampires here look really ghoulish. I also enjoyed
how it almost felt like a legitimate 80's teen flick due to the antics of
Gedde Watanabe (aka the little asian dude) of Sixteen Candles. There were a few laughs too, even if they're mostly that eye-rolling,
oh-my-God-so-80's type of way. Sometimes I felt guilty for laughing.
Last of all, it co-stars Deedee Pfeiffer. Ever since I saw her
in The Midnight Hour (at the age of six) I've had a huge crush on her.
She pretty much made the movie (for me).
Let's face it, this is no Lost Boys. But there is enough here for any
true horror fan to enjoy. Or if 80's nostalgia is your thing, there's
plenty of that too. Definitely worth a view.
An 80's Classic with Bite!.......2007-07-24
Chris Makepeace and Robert Rusler star as two college guys who have to score a super-hot stripper to get into their preferred fraternity in the 1986 horror/comedy "Vamp." The pair induct a third member to their party by recruiting "16 Candles'" Gedde Watanabe, an obnoxious and lonely rich kid who can provide them with the transportation they need to get to a strip club and back with the night's entertainment. However, after arriving at their destination, things quickly go awry. When one of the boys is led into the backrooms of the strip club and doesn't return, his disappearance kicks off a wild and dangerous night for his companions and their new dancer friend played by Dedee Pfeiffer. As it turns out, the strip club and the very town itself is a haven for vampires, and the frighteningly seductive Grace Jones is the Egyptian ruler of them all!
"Vamp" is a highly energized and entertaining 80's horror comedy from director Richard Wenk. Though not without its flaws (like the very idea of Grace Jones being the most desirable stripper in that club), the film delivers with classic 80's effects and humor and a small helping of some really gruesome stuff. The performances are great all around, including Sandy Baron as the sleazy emcee, and the only place you feel slightly cheated is at the climax. Yeah, ha, worst place to feel cheated I guess. It's just that the death of the head vamp is a wee bit anticlimactic. However, this is followed by a surprise ending that puts the film snugly into the "so bad it's good" category. Though, most of it actually IS good. It's sort of an interesting balance of "good" and "so bad it's good." In fact, you'd have to see it for yourself to know what I mean. The DVD is top notch, as the film is presented in a nice widescreen transfer and loaded with extras. In addition to trailers and TV spots, posters and promo stills, and a blooper and rehearsal reel, we even get a commentary with the director and three of the stars, plus the entire short film that earned Richard Wenk the directing job on Vamp, "Dracula Bites the Big Apple." As for that short, it has its strong and weak points but is well worth a watch. However, it certainly leaves you thinking that, between it and "Love At First Bite," somebody was ripping off somebody! Anyway, overall, "Vamp" is a great bargain and will guarantee you a highly entertaining evening! And, if you enjoy "Vamp," you've gotta check out "Fright Night," "Vampires," "Bordello of Blood," and the "From Dusk Till Dawn" trilogy!
Fangtastic horror comedy........2007-07-12
Three college students (Chris Makepeace, Gedde Watanabe and Robert Rusler) from a town go to the big city to find strippers for a party, they go inside of a sleazy strip join called "The After Dark Club". There they meet the strange owners, the sexy strippers and the seductive main star named Katrina (Grace Jones)who aren't what they appear to be as they are actually blood-thristy vampires in disguise, can they survive one hell of a night?
An outrageous and sexy horror comedy that has gained a cult following ever since it's release and is one of the most underrated vampire movies ever. Though it's not as awesome as "Fright Night", "Lost Boys" or "Near Dark" i still think this is a charming and sometimes funny movie that co-stars sexy DeeDee Pfiefer (Michelle's sister) as the main hero's girlfriend and Bill Drago ("The Hills Have Eyes 2006") as an albino man, the make-up and gore effects are outstanding thanks to the wizardry of Greg Cannom (who did the make-up for Bram Stoker's Dracula) and the acting is fine. Grace Jones herself steals the show as the title character and is probably her best role since she played in "Conan The Destroyer".
This DVD has great picture and sound with widescreen format and cool extras like audio commentary, an amusing short film called "Dracula Bites the Big Apple" from writer-director Richard Wenk, Blooper Reel, Behind-The-Scenes Rehersal footage, theatrical trailers, TV spots and Poster-and-still gallery, a must see for vampire movie lovers.
Also recommended: "The Lost Boys", "Near Dark", "Once Bitten", "The Monster Squad", "Evil Dead 2", "From Dusk Till Dawn", "Bordello of Blood", "Fright Night 1 & 2", "Def By Temptation", "The Hunger", "Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Movie and TV Show)", "Underworld", "Vampire Hunter D", "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust", "Dracula (1931)", "Demons", "Blade Trilogy", "Pumpkinhead", "Interview with the Vampire", "Queen of the Damned", "Lifeforce", "Lair of the White Worm", "Vampire's Kiss", "John Carpenter's Vampires", "Daughters of Darkness", "Vampyres", "Shaun of the Dead", "Scream", "Bram Stoker's Dracula", "Vampyros Lesbos", "Innocent Blood", "Rabid", "Van Helsing", "House of Dracula and other Hammer Dracula movies", "Not of this Earth", "The Return of the Living Dead", "Salem's Lot (1979 and 2004)", "Razor Blade Smile", "The Forsaken", "An American Werewolf in London", "The Howling", "Blood The Last Vampire", "Wolf", "Love at First Bite", "Dracula Dead and Loving it", "Ginger Snaps", "Re-Animator", "House (1986)", "Cronos", "Grindhouse" and "Idle Hands".
Please, Bite My Neck!..........2007-07-08
I have never been a big Grace Jones fan... Until now! VAMP is her movie, allowing her to be seductive, strong, and deadly. Her Katrina character is sensually captivating and intimidating. My kind of woman! She rules over her subordinates at the After Dark Club like a killer bee queen, feasting on the weak and troublesome. She is kept satisfied by a steady supply of homeless, nameless drifters. It's a perfect set-up! Katrina gets her bloodthirst quenched, while ridding the world of it's dregs. What could be better? Unfortunately, some college kids (Chris "My Bodyguard" Makepeace, Robert "Sometimes They Come Back" Rusler, and Gedde "Sixteen Candles" Watanabe) barge in to mess up the whole operation! Ah well, all bad things must come to an end. Still, Ms. Jones proves that she is indeed queen of the night...

vamps and witches.......2007-08-16
I will keep this short as the other reviews were quite long. I am no expert movie critic but I watch tons of horror and skinimax films. This set of movies were horrible! Out of the 5-6 hours of film, about 15 min were what you would expect. Don't waste money on this pathetic mess.
Cheap B Movie Mayhem..........2007-08-09
Vamps and Witches is a pretty good value for the price. Overall I like it the most compared to compilations I own such as Babes in the Woods, Hotter Than Hell, and Vicious Vixens. I think the Brentwood/BCI Eclipse videos are much better than the Pendulum multi movie packs. Probably none of these movies could stand alone, perhaps Witchouse 3 could, which also comes in a 4 movie pack (Haunted by the Past) with Collinsville 1-2, and Hell Asylum. Brad Sykes wrote and directed Lord of the Vampires and Witchcraft XII on this anthology. You might know him from the Camp Blood 1-3 movies, Babes in the Woods, The Zombie Chronicles, Demon's Kiss, Goth, and Bloody Tease among other stuff. I liked his films on here, surprising since I didn't like Babes in the Woods, especially his idea of cheerleader outfits in that heh. If you dislike Sykes I'd advice considering the mostly slasher style Haunted by the Past compilation instead of this.
Project Vampire (2 Stars): A few characters and actors fit the roles very badly which vastly detracted from the overall quality this could have had. The picture is a bit fuzzy, there are no sexual scenes, an asian character portrayed insultingly, nearly no nudity. Nothing really scary, more a Sci Fi interest over vampire horror. The DVD has an error where it claims Lord of The Vampires is side A when it is really this movie. You have likely seen Myron Natwick (Dr. Frederick Klaus) in something. The basic story is Dr. Klaus is selling a "longevity serum" to extend not just life but the quality of it as well. The catch is this turns people into vampires and they need another serum to dwell in daylight. Depending how much of the serum you take, it determines how many hours you can be in the sun. Klaus controls those who take his formula, he plans to turn the entire world into vampires and rule. One problem is some people are allergic to the serum, it also saps him to make it. Only with his destruction can his pyschic link be broken and the people freed from his control. There was a cool motorcycle scene (1:08:27) considering the low budget in this film. I thought this was a decent idea for a story, I'm just not into needles. Vampires are often killed via poison injections instead of the usual stake style. As expected a person escapes with the serum, luckily there has not been a sequel... Notable Cast members include: Mary Louise Gemmil (Sanda Jensen) was Meryl in There's Something About Mary. Mike McFarland (Mickey) does Master Roshi of DragonBall Z fame among other stuff. Chris Wolf (Tom) was in a few movies and Bob Rudd (Agent/Radio Voiceover) was Brell on two episodes of Voyager. The rest are mostly unexperienced, so you can expect the acting to be sporatic in spots.
Lord of the Vampires (2.5 Stars): Basically some people have to come up with five thousand dollars fast. They rob a store, kill somebody, take a hostage, and end up at Viktor's house. Unfortunately he is Lord of the Vampires, his two brides thirst for blood, and they don't keep houseguests. Much of the Vampire fangs and makeup in this movie are pretty lacking. There were some decent scenes though, I liked when Mercy (Vanessa Sweattle) burned her hand and a few other effects. Corey Manuel (Steve) who looked a bit like Jim Carrey did in the movie 23 was another bright spot. You might recognize Corey's name from his time as a production assistant (1999-2000) on the Family Guy. I thought his performance was pretty good, though it don't seem this flick helped his acting career. Gus (Joe Myles) was Malleus the Serpent God in Witchcraft XII on disc 2 of this compilation. I had a few problems with this movie, Viktor looked stupid with the white face. Mercy's hand makeup was peeling (after she burns her hand) and falling off at times during her sexual scenes. Amanda was the ugliest girl in the movie, hence it seemed stupid Viktor would want her. The ending was weak, the house looked like a shack in the suburbs and why could Amanda be in the sun at that point? There is a pretty well known cast member in this movie I'll mention though...
Ravenna (Liana Loggins) sang back up on Snoop Dogg's P.I.M.P remix. She was born Lee Ann Wicks, is a cousin of Kenny Loggins, an animal rights activist, and went to the same HS as Holly Hunter. She started working as a model at age 14, was Miss Teen Model of Georgia 1987, Playboy's Playmates in Bed (October 2000, Iss 1091-7276, pg 95, "Playboy Lingerie Spokesmodel for Allstar Game in Atlanta", Teen (USA) Sept 1997 pg 21-24 editorial model, and the Cover Photo Glamour (USA) October 1992. She has appeared on over 150 romance novel covers mostly with FABIO and she is a Supermodel. That should give you some idea about her, I'm sure she has some fans who might want to see her in this.
Sexual Scenes: Mercy=2, Ravenna=2, Dual=3 (Both Girls involved in action.)
Witchouse 3: Demon Fire (3 Stars): The maker of movies like Trancers, Puppet Master, Dollman, and Demonic Toys (Full Moon) teamed up with Tempe for this release. You get an all star B Cast with Debbie Rochon (Stevie), Tanya Dempsey (Annie), Tina Krause (Rose), and Brinke Stevens (Lilith). Rochon (Stevie) looked good in her gothic witch style garb and her acting was better than other movies I've seen her in. Stevie was a strong female character, though far from heartless... She was able to cry and really cared about her friends among other things. She acted realistic to the situation, was tough without the Xena invincibility and gave a good performance. Tanya was the best overall acting and even fooled me the first time I saw this... Krause (Rose) had her moments, though wasn't as good as the other two female leads. Tina is naked for about 5 seconds (exiting the shower) as the only nudity in this movie... J. R. Bookwalter Directed and Co-Wrote this, he has been involved in projects like Witchouse 2, Day of the Dead (uncredited zombie), Hell Asylum, Sadomaster (Lincoln), and the Bad Movie Police (Lance Randas) Cases 1-3. The other writer was Matthew Jason Walsh who wrote the first Witchouse, Petticoat Planet, Bikini Goddesses (Eric Black), Prison of the Dead, and The Brotherhood I-IV among other things.
Annie claims her man Burke (Paul Darrigo) has become abusive, her friends want to call the police, she insists this is the first time and they let her stay with them. Her friend Stevie has a grant to make a documentary about witchcraft, none of them really believe in that stuff though. There is a cool part where they talk about how Witches used to make an LSD balm that they applied using broom handles. This supposedly was the origin behind riding broomsticks becoming associated with them. Strange things start to happen after the girls drink too much and perform a mock ceremony. The film touches on some real issues with relationships, friends, communication, and I liked it more than the Grudge. Music was good but for one bad song, mostly non lyrical music played to set the mood. I liked when Stevie beat up Burke on the beach, grinding his face into the sand with her foot. I thought the inside shots were done well, though some outside shots I didn't like. This flick hides their special effects well, often using smoke, showing items to obscure (like a shower door) view, and creative lighting. Perhaps something is wrong with my DVD, I notice a flicker at the bottom center of my screen when I watch this.
Witchcraft XII: In the Lair of the Serpent (2.5 Stars): The Order of Shades are using females to lure men for sacrifice to the Serpent God Malleus. Luckily for them they usually get to have sex first. I liked how the sex scenes flowed with the story. The music used fit the film pretty well for the most part. There was a part I liked where I think Lia (Tricia Berdot) rubs her boot on this guys cheek after a sexual encounter. When I first saw the mask in this movie it reminded me of the one worn by Klytus in Flash Gordon. I thought the special effects were at least B level, not bad like the previous two editions of this series. I didn't like how many of the outside shots were done, Sykes also wrote and directed Lord of the Vampires on this same compilation. I noticed many in the core cast had worked together on his movies in the past and other mutual projects. I think this helped keep this film cohesive, even though it was pretty low budget. Lisa Jay's scenes for some reason were deleted from this movie, she was Michelle in Creepies.
Chip James (Will Spanner) was a major improvement over James Servais from the prior instalement. Zenova Braeden (Kyra) of Chunky Housewives fame was in Goth with Monika Wild (Tisa), while Wild did Bloody Tease with Joe Haggerty (The Coroner). Haggerty was in Demon's Kiss with Janet Tracey Keijser (Cindy Lawton), Garrett Clancy (Tom Greaves), and Joe Myles (Malleus). Clancy was in Creepies with Savvy Brown and Myles who was Gus in Lord of the Vampires. Keijser, Clancy, Haggerty, and Myles were all in the Zombie Chronicles together prior to making this movie. Nick Stellate (Chief Burns) has done TV spots on shows like Monk, Untold Stories of the ER, The Playbook, Fashion House, Pokemon (additional voices), and the Michael Jackson Trial portraying Rudy Provencio.
Sexual Scenes: Tisa=1, Kyra=1 (Zenova), Rana=1 (Savvy Brown), Lia=1? (I think it was Lia), Cindy=2 and a shower spot...
Pros & CONS: You get 4 watchable movies for the price of 1 basically. For some reason when Project Vampire is on you are just compelled to do anything else but watch the movie. The Lord of the Vampires was better than I expected, though harder to watch repeatedly (since the bad vampire makeup gets annoying) compared to Witchcraft XII. Viktor (Jack Wareing) of Mad Jack fame played his part decent, considering how badly he looked. Witchouse 3 would have been better if it had sufficient nudity and sex in it. The cast of Debbie Rochon, Tanya Dempsey, Brinke Stevens, and Tina Krause made it worth owning. Luckily Witchcraft XII was much better than Witchcraft X and XI were. The sound was good for all the movies except for Project Vampire, the only film without a 5.1 stereo option. I currently own 3 of these 4 film sets from Brentwood, all of them have at least 1 broken DVD clip holder.
Blazed Bits: Beaver Cleaver Free Zone... In all these movies the ladies are treated like Elvis when nothing is on below the waistline. Sad since in the 80's you could see almost any B-Movie and expect some Muffweiser... It seems at some point during or after the 90's things moved in the opposite direction. I used to love these B movie and low budget flicks since they were open and free. Those days seem like a distant memory, I've seen more freedom and sexual content in R rated movies from the 70's and 80's. I found it sad during Witchouse 3 they had a flashback to a sexual encounter where the girls never even get topless. I thought the sexual scenes in Lord of the Vampires and Witchcraft XII flowed well with the story, which can be rare in those types of movies. My one problem was Mercy's burn makeup was peeling in her sex scene with Viktor. That could have worked fine, if Sykes let the makeup peel off in stages during it, the hand healed via sexual magic.
Buy this if you want some Cheap B level horror movies with marginal topless nudity and simulated sex scenes mixed in.
Pretty good for the price.......2007-01-20
None of these movies really rates better than 2 stars, but you get four for the price of one, so I'll give it 4 stars.
Lord of the Vampires: Some goth looking dude lives with two girls, one a typical bar slut and the other a slightly older babe. They're all vampires, and they lure guys to the house to have sex and then a little nibble afterwards. Some unsuspecting folks who have just robbed a convenience store end up being invited to stay the night after their van breaks down. The characters were fairly well developed, and the action moved along at an acceptable rate, though it was slowed considerably by the fact that there's a sex scene every 5 minutes for the first half of the movie.
Project Vampire: This is fairly dull and really low budget. The only movie of the set that doesn't have a lot of nudity. Some guys escape from a project they were working on, where they had a serum to turn people into vampires. They're hunted down by the other people from the project. Like I say, really low budget and nothing interesting ever happens. Still, it's watchable.
Witchouse 3, Demon Fire: Some girl is in an abusive relationship and leaves to stay with some friends of hers, only to discover that they're involved in witchcraft. They strut around looking sexy from time to time, otherwise it's not a very interesting movie, though certainly watchable.
Witchcraft XII: This was only saved by the presence of a really sexy babe who kept showing up in one sexy outfit after another after another. I kept watching just to see what she'd wear next. The plot is total cheese, some satanic women hang out at a bar and lure men back to their house where they have sex with them and then some guy in a Darth Maul Halloween mask shows up and kills them. A couple people who knew one of the victims investigates. It's a "so bad it's good" type movie that moves along at an okay pace but just like Lord of the Vampires it's slowed down considerably by a sex scene every five minutes for the first half of the movie.
I liked these; if you're looking for sleazy low budget trash, this should fit the bill quite nicely.
Product Description
Stark...sublime...intense. The phenomenon of Gothic Bellydance or Raks Gothique is a multitude of poetic visions born out of the Goth, or Gothic, subculture, music, imagery and fashion, and expressed in the language of Bellydance.
Modern "Bellydance" is an amalgam of historical dance styles coming from both East and West. Its diverse vocabulary allows the dancer to experiment with the widest range of creative movement, musical trends and cultural elements. A century after its arrival in the West, the art of Bellydance is emerging as a new world of unconstrained creative experimentation. No longer bound by its ethnic origins, it is one of the fastest-growing and most artistically-open contemporary dance forms.
Gothic Bellydance incorporates many Bellydance styles and motifs: Cabaret, Tribal Fusion, modern dance, echoes of Gypsy dance, Flamenco, Asian, and Indian dance all called to express the darkness of the unknown, and the mysteries of life, death, and eternity that have inspired Goth philosophies and lifestyles.
This first of its kind, groundbreaking collaborative project brings you the work of innovative and uncompromising dark fusion artists including a number of the recognized pioneers of Gothic Bellydance. The DVD features Tempest, and Ariellah of California; Asharah, Ya Meena and Raven of Washington, DC; Jeniviva, Ayshe, Jehan, Tanna, Blanca and Neon of New York City, as well as music by outstanding composers and performers including Solace, Jehan, Collide, Knossos and Gypsy Caravan.
Enter our dark labyrinth and meet an exotic array of striking characters and creatures: Souls possessed by an ancient evil spirit; a black-winged fallen angel; an incarnation of Kali and Isis; a leopard-woman from the island of Dr. Moreau; a tormented silent movie vamp; a Gothic Lolita in love with Death; a wanderer in spiritual exile; a snake morphing into a human; a seeker violated and redeemed by divine domination; a Siren exercis

Dissapointment.......2007-08-08
I was so excited to get this dvd. What a let down. The dancing, for the most part, was just not up to par. The S&M bit involved very little dance, mostly just wondering around the "dungeon" caressing various items, WHATEVER! My 2 stars go to some of the interesting costuming and concepts.
More like snippits from 80's rock videos than bellydance.......2007-07-07
Good try but this entire video is less bellydance and more like open stage at a local goth club. I expected quite a bit more. It's not an instructional video, not a bellydance video, just one dancer at a time performing very slow and uninteresting routines.
A new dimension of bellydance - mystery & intrigue.......2007-06-23
I was interested in the DVD because I'm a bellydancer. My main style is "Egyptian cabaret" but I have an appreciation and interest in ALL types of bellydancing. I enjoyed this DVD. The imagery, costumes, and the dancing were, to me, interesting and different. I was feeling the whole "welcome to our dark realm" vibe. I would have given it five stars except for that S&M piece. Believe me, I am no prude. However, as a bellydancer, I am constantly working on educating the public that this dance is a respectful art form, appropriate as family style entertainment. Respectful bellydancers can perform their art at summer festivals and parades, not dark smokey rooms with a stage with a pole in the middle of it. Shame on whoever thought the S&M piece was a great idea! Other than that, I really, really liked it. Too bad I couldn't give it five stars.
Got goth? If not , then get off the stage.......2007-06-17
The two stars go to the only 2 dancers who belonged on this DVD, namely Ariellah and Tempest (who rightfully claimed the video cover). Gothic bellydance is something they feel and do, and this shows in their work. Expecting to find more dancers of the gothic style, I was greatly disappointed. Most of the other dancers do not appear to routinely practice the gothic style, and were probably just added as big name fillers. I'm not knocking their ability to dance, they just don't exude the darkness. And all the black corsetting and graveyard backdrops will never change that. You can hide the identities of true gothic bellydancers with veils over their heads, and you'll still be able to pick them out of the lineup (referring to Tempest's and Ariellah's duet performance). There are plenty of performance videos of more traditional bellydancing for the other drama queens to boast of their participation. There are plans for a second performance video; hopefully it'll be better. I'd settle for all performances by Ariellah and Tempest, but if they could recruit others like them, it would be a real treat. No more commercial goth wannabes; they are easily spotted. Get off the dance floor, and let the real gothic bellydancers show you how it's done.
Mystery and Beauty.......2007-05-19
This intriguing collection of dances and imagery will delight anyone who likes to feast on beauty and wonder at the great mystery in dance of controlled flexibility, when a dancer has such impeccable technique that the most difficult movement is made to look easy, as in the slow melting choreography in Asharah's exquisite "Exiled," the fascintaing dancing of Ariellah, who sometimes seems not to possess bones in her liquid arms, the stunning mastery of Neon's isolations, and Tempest's sumptuous "Homage to Theda." There are many other gorgeous dances in this DVD, among them Ya Meena and Raven's "Shawaza," where they are so well coordinated that even the folds of their jewel toned blue and red costumes have a synchronized flow, and the teaming of Ariellah and Tempest in "Ritual Means." There is hardly a moment in "Gothic Bellydance" that is not visually rewarding, and though Jehan's "Goddessence" is my least favorite because of its theme and its minimum dance content, Jehan is a bellydance diva, not only as a dancer who is always interesting to watch, but also as musician, and some of the lovely pieces heard on this DVD are her compositions.
The production is superb, with outstanding camera work and lighting, and most of all, incredibly skillful editing, which keeps one's eye interested, but never overpowers or interferes with the dance itself. The costumes are glorious, and some with such richness and texture they look like butterfly wings or the imaginary wardrobe of Scheherazade; the fabulous "wings" in Ayshe's "Kali/Isis" are breathtaking. One has the option of seeing entire program of 20 dances in sequence under the "Enter" tab, or by performer in alphabetical order under the "Visions" tab, which includes a biography and other material on the artists. For bellydance enthusiasts who want to watch something unique, "Gothic Bellydance" is a treat with a touch of the edgy and odd in it.

THEDA BARA IS A REVELATION.......2007-01-24
for any fan of classic hollywood , this is a must for your dvd collection.
theda bara was the first-ever sex symbol of the cinema. with almost all of her films now lost, we mostly have photos of her. those iconic photos of her-- the bulging eyes rimmed all-around in black mascara, her hands pulling on her long black hair, the wild expressions on her face, the cleopatra circular breast plates!! one gets the impression of a plump 'lily munster'. from our modern viewpoint it's hard to take her seriously in these images.
when most film historians talk of her, they relate the incredible hype that surrounded bara and her films from 1915 to 1919, mostly dreamt up by her studio, fox pictures. a female vampire that sucks men dry. her name an anagram for 'arab death'. her belief in past lives. a famous story bara relates herself concerns her giving an apple to a young child who then recognizes her, screams 'it's the vampire!!', and runs away in horror.
she has been written about humorously, a bygone, repressed era's quaint way of dealing with sex.
so to now finally see bara on the screen in her first film is quite a revelation. in her first appearance in the film, she takes a long stem rose, breaks it off the stem, and drops the petals on the floor smiling at its destruction. bara has a shocking and commanding presence.
she is also quite pretty and natural in front of the camera. bara resembles elizabeth montgomery with black hair (for anyone who remembers montgomery's look in that "twilight zone" episode she did with charles bronson). there are a few scenes that take place in bara's bedroom, and she's quite lovely with her long, glossy black hair cascading down her back, and a nightgown that constantly slips off her shoulder as she moves about.
bara is a suprisingly powerful actress as well, as good as any modern actress of today. this is the biggest surprise of the film. no overacting or hair-pulling in this one. she gives a perfectly controlled, mezmerizing, detailed performance, with a couple of displays of fury that will make you jump!!
the film itself looks good for almost being 100 years old. my only complaint being there are no closeups of bara in the film. the closest we get to one is a head and sholder shot of her. i believe dw griffith invented the closeup shot in his film "birth of a nation", which was released about the same time as this film.
all in all this is a very good film, and if this is the kernel on which the mighty bara myth grew, now i understand why.
the hype and hysteria that surrounded bara in 1915 must have been similar to the buzz and hysteria madonna caused in the eighties and nineties. and like madonna i see theda bara had the talent to back up all the hype.
Alluring Vampire.......2006-07-14
A Fool There Was is based on a poem called "The Vampire," a piece about and evil woman who corrupts innocent men to do her bidding. The vampire is Theda Bara; her name is an anagram for Arab Death. Although her real name is Theodosa and her image has been fabricated by studio publicity, the public is in awe of her, the first sex symbol whose pushy nature is absolutely unheard of at the time. She is thrilling and unique and a major star.
Unfortunately today, practically nothing exists of Bara's career. Only this early film and perhaps a few others exist for viewing. This is an adequate representation; it certainly emphasises her image. The Vampire is a gold digger who enjoys ruining the men she feeds on but keeping them loyal to her all the while. The particular man in this film is a family man with a gorgeous daughter and a devoted wife, but somehow, this Vampire is cunning enough to lure him away.
The story is not particularly interesting, but what is is watching Theda Bara. She has a quiet attraction with the audience, something very subtle but very inviting. From seeing pictures of her, one might expect that her acting would be overly exaggerated and strange, but it is not in the least. If anything, she is rather casual; it is the others in the film that overact.
I did not expect to like Theda Bara after seeing this film, but is left me sadly wishing that there were more films to see. Let her career stand as an example; we need to preserve the films we have left.
Earliest movie I have ever seen.......2005-08-02
I bought this movie because it stars the great Theda Bara. I had no idea what to expect because I just wanted to start watching some of the older silent movies. This was actually very good. I did have a little trouble following the storyline but that didn't really matter. I was so captivated by Theda Bara! There was one scene where she shows her ankle...how revealing for 1915!
The extras were disapointing, I was hoping for my photos of Theda Bara or a biography.
It is so interesting to see who they made movies at this time!
Edwardian morality play.......2005-07-27
This movie really isn't much to write home about, though one must consider that feature-length films were only a few years old in 1915 and just about every feature from the early and mid-Teens won't seem very complex or technically advanced by modern-day standards. Unfortunately, the handful of surviving Theda Bara films seem to be unrepresentative of her true scope of talents and ability, although clearly one can tell, when seeing her in motion as opposed to those often ridiculous-looking publicity stills Fox Studios had her sit for, that she was quite talented and even beautiful, in an off-beat kind of way. (I feel that 'The Unchastened Woman' is a slightly better film in terms of pacing and story development, though unless some of her more representative films are ever found, all we have to go by are the sub-par films that remain--those two, 'East Lynne,' half of the short film 'Madame Mystery,' and an early pre-stardom appearance in 'The Stain.') This is the film that made her a star, that established the concept of the Vamp, the beautiful dangerous mysterious evil woman who uses power and sexuality to lure men to doom and destruction, laughing at her victims after they've run their course with her and she has no use or want for them anymore.
The story itself is little more than some Edwardian morality play; a dangerous woman who is interested in sex and therefore the dark side lures a series of men to rack and ruin; when she's finished she either coldly abandons them or they are too broken morally and physically to go on anymore, killing themselves or wasting away. Most features in 1915 weren't that long, but given how many chunks of time are just glossed over with title cards such as "Six months later," "The next morning," and "A week later," one can't help but feel that maybe there's some footage missing. This leads to a feeling of uneven plot and character development. Although as uneven as some of the pacing may feel to a modern audience, it is revolutionary in that the "bad" woman isn't punished for her actions, and there is no cheery happy moral ending that a lot of people of the time might have been accustomed to. There wasn't as much screen time given to Theda as I would have liked, but when she is onscreen she's very good. The extras are a bit skimpy but still interesting.
Ah! Theda Bara.......2005-03-14
How can any movie staring Theda Bara get less than
100%? I recomend this movie just to watch Theda in
action. The clothes she wears are her own. The scene
packing for the cruise ship while wearing a white night
gown is memorable! The strap was loose and kept sliding
down while she packed. She would yank it back up and you
could tell she was frustrated over it. To her surprise, the
director refused to reshoot the scene. There are other actors
in this film, but they pale beside Theda. The scene in Italy,
where Theda was lounging outside on a chaise lounge and her
lover was leaning against her, drinking what she gave him.
The postman walked up with a letter and gave Theda a long
appraising glance up and down as she lounged--hilarious!!!

Camp at it's best!.......2007-01-07
Well almost at it's best. This is no Young Frankenstein but still s good way to waste a little time!
These "movies" sucked.......2005-03-11
And yes, pun more or less intended. I finally got a copy today, really against my better judgement, but it was cheap (at a store that shall remain nameless) and two discs so I hoped against hope that it'd be a decent deal. Man, was I wrong! If I knew it'd be this bad you couldn't have GIVEN it to me! I expected it to be low budget but jeez, they must've only used about $100 worth of videotape, instead of using film. The 1996 original was the worst in all respects but at least the sequel kinda had a couple of funny jokes. Still, it'd cut back and forth between being on videotape and digital tape, I guess it was. In both films the stripping was so boring that I'd fast forward through it, but at least the dancers were pretty decent looking for the most part. The acting in both films was atrocious, as were the stupidest, phoniest fight scenes ever, and who the hell was in charge of the sucky music? What was up with that? I know that their budget either didn't allow for using at least some popular music, or else they weren't given permission to, I guess, but the songs (which were all vampire-themed, of course) were just soooo bad, musically.
BTW, is it just me or did anyone else notice the similarity between the ex-priest actor and his chubby friend with long dark hair and full facial hair, Larry, and Kevin Smith and his goateed friend in "Clerks"? Coincidence? You be the judge.
Anyway, if you like fake breasts (though there were some real ones, too), atrocious acting, phony fight scene, gahdawful music and Z-budget films then by all means get this DVD set. It's right up your alley.
Great Vampire Flick.......2004-08-16
This movie has everything you could ask for in a vampire movie from a blood bath with a naked Amber Newman to a blood orgasm with Glori-Anne Gilbert. The strip club scenes had a feel of realism to them. None of that cheesy feeling the director had never been to a strip club and repeats 30 seconds of footage over and over. This two disk set also included a short film Portal:the movie that I found hilarious. One of my favorite parts in the extras is the homage to boobies. There sure were plenty of them to chose from in this movie.
Long Awaited Sequel.......2004-05-27
Finally, a sequel to the "Gone With The Wind of Vampire Stripper Movies"! This movie continues the story that began in "Vamps : Deadly Dreamgirls" which is included as a special bonus. You get to find out if a relationship between an ex-priest and a newly turned vampire stripper can work out. Glori-Anne Gilbert joins the cast as Heather (all grown up and now looking like a professional dancer). Paul Morris returns as Seamus. Guess what, Amber Newman's character who played Randi in the first movie, had a twin sister who is a vampire. Who is not at all pleased her sister is dead. Loaded with hot dancers and they even threw in a plot at no extra charge. Joe Bob Briggs gave 3 1/2 stars out of 4.

The Saga Continues.......2004-07-21
"Vamps : Deadly Dreamgirls" is no longer available by itself. But never fear, the story continues in "Vamps 2 : Blood Sisters" which includes as a bonus the original Vamps 1 that started it all. So if you have been dying to find out if a relationship between a fallen priest and a vampire stripper can work out, you can find out in Vamps 2.
Someone has obviously been peeking into my fantasies.......2004-02-09
What's the use in pretending? I love Vamps: Deadly Dreamgirls. I mean, come on -Vamps is the name of a strip joint where the girls (including the likes of Amber Newman and Jennifer Huss) are vampires who will never age a single day, and the place is run by a red-headed mistress of the dark. It's a fantasy come true. As if this isn't enough all by itself (and it is), you've actually got a pretty good plot thrown in for no extra charge. The writers even tossed in some great little catchphrases here and there. "Without gore, it's a bore" is a good one, but an even better one, delivered just prior to a vampire feeding, is "this guy is lewd, crude, and about to be food." Granted, the movie doesn't have the largest of budgets, but the filmmakers do a lot with what they have, making sure we get the blood we expect from several arterial fangs-plorational procedures. The music isn't that great, but the featured tracks are used effectively. Alas, you won't find any complete nudity in the film, but you can't have everything in this world.
Okay, the whole priest character is a little weird, I'll give you that. Paul Morris plays Father Seamus O'something or other, a young priest who has an obsession with horror films and a best friend who drags him to a strip joint for his birthday. Tasha (Jenny Wallace) isn't that wild about having a priest in her establishment, especially with her being a vampire and all, but it doesn't seem like much of a problem at first. Besides, she has the debut of a new performer to gloat over, as the all-American girl Heather (Jennifer Huss) takes the stage for the first time (in a cheerleading outfit, I might add). It just so happens that Heather, on the run from a loser boyfriend, just happens to be a former high school classmate of our young priest, and the two soon strike up a relationship that certainly seems to threaten the whole celibate thing that Seamus has going on. Tasha thinks Heather will make a great vampire stripper (a judgment I myself would certainly endorse), so obviously you're going to have a big priest-vampire showdown at the end. Vamps: Deadly Dreamgirls also features the lovely Amber Newman as Randi, a vampire with an attitude and, when she is onstage, a whip.
So many movies of this type are ruined with an ultimate victory of good over evil, but the ending of this particular film actually works pretty well, falling somewhere between traditional good and evil. If you like your vampires young, female, attractive, scantily-clad, and filled with a lust for blood, Vamps: Deadly Dreamgirls was made just for you.
Please don't...............2002-06-20
"Stay far, far away from this production company." is the advice of my brother after watching this movie and I could not agree more. Some okay looking babes with lots of skin shown, but besides that a complete waste of time. No gore and little blood and nothing resembling frights. Only get this if you want a low budget movie shot on video with some strip club dancing in it.
What a waste!.......2001-11-17
Read somewhere that this is a "good" movie. I strongly disagree!

One of the films isn't even about Vampires!.......2003-04-04
Whoever compiled these two films together obviously was fooled by the term 'vamp' (as was I, the poor [person] who bought this DVD).
That's right!
The first film is a highly edited film, orginally a hard-core porno, but presented here at only an hour long with all the porn bits scaled down so you don't actually see XXX stuff.
It was originally made in a Spanish-speaking country. The makers have seen fit to put in their own subtitles, which causes the only hilarity in the entire film.
The second film is simply a collection of women dressing & undressing in underwear... ! Take the first scene, a woman spends 10 minutes soaping herself in the shower, before spending another ten minutes in the bedroom oiling herself. That is it! There's no dialogue from her.
The film then moves to a short, busty woman (all the women have pumped up boobs), who dresses, then undresses into various types of underwear.
The rest of the film is like this!
This film is probably the greatest let down in vampire-film going history!
