5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-09-15

I loved Shaun of the Dead when I saw it on DVD. When I got a HD-DVD player, I found out this movie was on HD-DVD and I had to have it! It was better watching it this time around than when I first remember. If you don't own the movie already, you need to get it, if you do own it, watch it again or buy the HD-DVD version if you want to support the format and/or Simon, Nick, and Bill.

5 out of 5 stars Zombie Plagues are Tons of Fun!.......2007-08-26

I loved this movie: a little bit of gore, a little bit of heartbreak...they do their best to survive.

"Shaun of the Dead" brings good humour to this "romantic comedy with zombies" which comes to HD DVD with a fantastic HD picture and excellent DD+ 5.1 audio.

The local zombies are great...I liked the female Winchester regular, she made a nice creepy zombie, as did the [chubby] black one, and Mary grows on you even more through the second viewing...they all did a really great job! They do well to give several zombies more familiarity through character development.

There are plenty of extras on this HD DVD as well including deleted scenes, commentary, a gallery...it even follows up on a couple of happenings not shown in the film.

This is an extremely fun movie, and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic.......2007-08-21

Loved this movie. Saw Hot Fuzz first, which was also great. This movie is a great comedy. Other reviews go through the plot, so I won't bother. Great movie in the tradition of British comedies with smart, sharp writing and great acting.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of the price a funny movie.......2007-08-13

One of my favorite movies is Shaun of the Dead. That being said I expected more of the same with this movie. After watching the movie it wasn't the same. The physical comedy I enjoyed so much is not evident early on. The comedy and banter is dry early on. The action is rather lacking for the first hour. Then when the movie heats up it really becomes a lot of fun.

This movie is different and for those expecting an American type action movie you better turn away. Hot Fuzz features a lot and I mean a lot of dry English humor. It's good but don't expect any real laugh til your sides hurt moments. Hot Fuzz is rather enjoyable if you approach it with an open mind. The same main characters for Shaun of the Dead are here and the on screen chemistry is good. This movie is almost unusual to be stranger than Shaun of the Dead.

In the end I really liked this movie. The acting is very good and action scenes are funny and intense. The sound quality on my home theatre was very good and that helped add to the movie. For any fan of Shaun of the Dead this is definately a must watch. The picture and sound quality are excellent for this HD version. The price is great. At only $20 this is a must have for any HD collection.

4 out of 5 stars Not your typical zombie movie (HD DVD review).......2007-08-06

If you are looking for your typical zombie movie ie. 28 days/weeks later, land of the dead, dawn of the dead this is not it. If you do not enjoy british humor go somewhere else. However if you are okay with the above stated then this movie is for you. very funny film, well made.
HD DVD version is excellent very good sound and video.

2002's popular video-game-derived hit Resident Evil didn't inspire confidence in a sequel, but Resident Evil: Apocalypse defies odds and surpasses expectations. It's a bigger, better, action-packed zombie thriller, and this time Milla Jovovich (as the first film's no-nonsense heroine) is joined by more characters from the popular Capcom video games, including Jill Valentine (played by British hottie Sienna Guillory) and Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr, from 1999's The Mummy). They're armed and ready for a high-caliber encounter with devil dogs, mutant "Lickers," lurching zombies, and the leather-clad monster known only as Nemesis, unleashed by the nefarious Umbrella Corporation responsible for creating the cannibalistic undead horde. Having gained valuable experience as a respected second-unit director on high-profile films like Gladiator and The Bourne Identity, director Alexander Witt elevates this junky material to the level of slick, schlocky entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Horror-bad, action-good!.......2007-08-01

This is not a horror movie. This film does not compare well with horror movies. This is an action movie with zombies. It compares very well with other action movies. Starting where Resident Evil ended, the bullets start flying and the zombies start chomping immediately (do watch RE before this one). Although the script is hardly award winning, the movie delivers much more than you would reasonably expect from a video game based zombie movie. The actors are capable enough, and even if you find them stiff and generic, it's okay - most of them don't survive very long. Sadly, the comedy relief guy isn't funny at all and he does survive the whole movie. Also, the martial arts and special effects are good overall (except for the CGI Dobermans which are awful). Somehow the film avoids being predictable and sets up the last part of the trilogy nicely. Whether or not you've played the video game (I haven't), Resident Evil: Apocalypse is sure to satisfy cravings for a fast-paced action movie with sexy, gun-toting, butt-kicking babes if you can forgive a few rather forced script elements (like main characters strolling through a graveyard totally oblivious to the risk this involves during a zombie uprising!)

4 out of 5 stars Good Sequel.......2007-07-06

This is a great sequel to the original. Although it didn't seem as dark and scary as the first, it made up for it in action. The movie picks up where the first one left off. As our heroine has escaped the hospital she finds a devastated world. She must find her only surviving friend and do what she can to bring the Umbrella Corporation down. She finds out more horrible truths about them and is assisted by a unlikely allie. Both movies complement each other nicely. I definitely recommend you add this to your Horror/SciFi collection. A must for anyone that owns "Resident Evil". I am looking forward to the third movie in this set.

5 out of 5 stars A-lot better than the first.good flick. Actors are awesome in their respective parts. Milla Jovovich is severely underrated.......2007-06-26

This movie is almost perfect in its execution. Sure its still not completely faithful to the game but hey you cant have it all. This movie is so entertaining you will not even notice the time passing. Nemesis is scary and tough. The story is actually very good and entertaining as well. Siena Guillroy is excellent as Jill Valentine and Oded Fehr is a very good Carlos Oliveira. All in all a very entertaining good movie.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to watch on the go!.......2007-05-09

RE: Apocalypse is a fun movie for me to watch, enjoying some of my favorite actors fighting through hordes of the undead to save a girl and get a way out of a locked down city before a nuclear explosion wipes everything out.

As a person studying abroad, I got the UMD for the reason that it's easy to watch on my PSP on the plane or late at night, not having a TV around to watch it on. And I don't have to worry about a larger disc being broken in transit or the case cracking.

A fun movie to watch, and compact enough to carry around easily.

3 out of 5 stars R.E.: THE GAMERS VERSION........2007-04-28

When I first rented the original "Resident Evil" I was completely shocked at how much I liked it. I had zero expectations for it, yet was sucked in by it's story, characters and visualisation. So I ran out and purchased it (as soon as it was on sale). Since then I've watched it about 10 times, which is pretty remarkable considering I have roughly 350 DVDs to choose from. Given this, as a non-gamer, I was surprised to find that gamers were generally disappointed in this movie (not all of them, but most negative reviews were from gamers).

Now we have "Resident Evil- Apocalypse". Don't get to see "grown-up" movies at the theater, so I had to wait until the DVD release. I liked the first so much, I did not even think of renting this. I quickly bought the DVD (when it went on sale, never buy at full price)with much anticipation. Roughly 3 years later I have viewed it approximately (well, ACTUALLY)1 time. That's right, no type-o. JUST ONCE. It was not nearly as compelling as the first film (to me). Gone was the gripping story, the great camera work, the excellent character development. In the stead of this great stuff was some sort of "made-for-cable" goofy monster movie. Now, I did not hate it, (I actually like goofy monster movies) but it is not begging me to watch it again. It's so in-your-face that after one viewing, there was nothing left to see. No mystery. No subtlety. No sense of future dread. It was done.

But wow! Gamers really like it!! Now it all makes sense. Since I find shooter games extremely redundant and difficult to play more than once, I found this movie to be the same. A one timer (OK maybe 2). Kind of like sixth sense. Once you get to the end, well.. ...it's over.

Cinematically, comparing this to the fist film is like comparing the first "Star Wars" to the last (I'm talking release dates, not "Lucas-Time"). It's comparing something that is a carfully thought out and woven tale, to something that is simply a series of evens strung together to make a story. Kind of like Shooter video games. You travel down a linear path and take on what's in front of you. Unfortunatly this is a film!

I can't say don't buy this if you liked the first. It's nice to have a continuation of the first. Just don't go in with the same expectations.

Homicidal maniacs have a field day in Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects, an ultraviolent spin-off from Zombie's critically reviled 2003 debut, House of 1,000 Corpses. As Zombie continues to cultivate his name-brand variety of extreme horror and splatter-film homage, he definitely takes his place among connoisseurs of carnage. In the case of The Devil's Rejects, several characters from 1,000 Corpses return for another marathon of mayhem, as the murderous Firefly family (led by Sid Haig as the maniacal "Captain Spaulding") turn their bloody wrath against hostages in a fleabag motel, while the local sheriff (William Forsythe) plots revenge against them for the killing of his brother. Before their inevitable showdown, Zombie has plenty of fun--perhaps a little too much fun--indulging his penchant for sick, sadistic humor and gruesome atrocity. Clearly, Zombie fancies himself as horror's answer to Quentin Tarantino, but he lacks Tarantino's gift for riveting plots and escalating tension. Instead, The Devil's Rejects is just raw, rampant excess from start to finish, paying visual tribute to gruesome classics from the '70s and guaranteed to earn the cult status that Zombie is all too obviously aiming for. He's an unabashed horror buff who's carving a niche in the genre he loves, shamelessly satisfying a small but loyal audience of sicko-phants. --Jeff Shannon

Description

From the visionary mind of acclaimed musician Rob Zombie comes Lions Gate Films' THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, the gritty, violent follow-up to Zombie's smash horror hit, HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES. Written and directed by Zombie, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS reunites the homicidal members of the Firefly family, tracing their bloody flight from an outlaw sheriff hell-bent on revenge... Ambushed at their isolated home by Sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe) and a squad of armed men, the Firefly family wakes up one morning with guns blazing - yet only Otis (Bill Moseley) and his sister, Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie), manage to escape the barrage of bullets unharmed. Hiding out in a backwater motel, the wanted siblings wait to rendezvous with their errant father, Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), killing whoever happens to stand in their way. But as the body count mounts higher, Sheriff Wydell decides to take the law into his own hands, paving the way for one of the most depraved and terrifying showdowns in cinematic history.

4 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN THE FIRST!! A BUNCH OF PSYCHOS!!.......2007-08-31

this movie was a trip, a bunch of crazy, no good killers, who fortunatley get theres in the end. rob zombie, like they say practice makes perfect. better the second time around. if you don't like the sadistic crazy maniac killers who don't give a crap, well this isn't for you. cause these guys and girl are just to freakin evil, no remorse, no mercy. they make everyone pay, in the worst way possible. in general the whole storyline and craziness, i liked it and i give it a thumbs up.

1 out of 5 stars 0 STARS: Please reject this kind of garbage. It sucks!!!!.......2007-07-31

In the past, I have been asked to soften my stance on this kind of garbage, but I refuse as I will always tell it like it is. Movies like "The Devil's Wussies", I mean, "The Devil's Rejects" are the kind of movies that are embarrassing for the horror genre. This movie would make me laugh if I wasn't so disgusted with boredom and the movie's inherent stupidity!! This movie is simply garbage and is a boring waste of time. It's not scary, there's no substance, there's no style, there's no suspense, and it's just a bunch of stupid moronic nonsense that is totally uncompelling and very much indicative of a lack of imagination on the part of Rob Dumbie, I mean Rob Zombie...added to which indignity, I heard this guy Zombie is doing a remake of the all-time classic "Halloween"...what a sad day that will be for the horror genre. Oh, just let me run to my video store and buy "The Devil's Rejects" and place it right along side classics like "The Shining", "The Exorcist", "The Omen", The original "TCM", and "Halloween"...pleeeaase!! I'm glad I just rented this garbage. "The Devil's Rejects" is nothing but trash, plain and simple.

1 out of 5 stars stupid.......2007-07-09

I just didn't like it. Not much substance nor any depth, just gratuitous torture, murder and mayhem. Throughout the film, I was wondering how the victims could or would have reacted in real life. I don't think any of them reacted realisticly nor do I believe the murderous trio would have been able to get away with half of their crimes.

The first absurdity was the scene in which the man knocked out a woman with her son in broad daylight at a gas station and left her for dead after taking her car. At a public place like that, someone would have jumped to her assistance and called the cops. Being that the store owner probably had a gun, it makes it even more absurd. The second absurdity is when the girl was holding the two women hostage at knife point. The two women could have easily overpowered her, particularly after one of the women went into the bathroom and got a toilet lid. The other absurdity was when one of the men managed to overpower two reasonably healthy middle aged men. The man who did that would have been beaten to a pulp by the other two. One other thing... those three maniacs would have died or would have been half dead after their hands were nailed down and doused with gasoline and set on fire. The girl was set free, but she was serverely wounded by a stapler gun.

The film made me more angry than anything. It was so bad it wasn't even funny.

4 out of 5 stars Dirty, dusty, bloody, ugly, brutal, vulgar..........2007-06-17

Essentially, Rob Zombie brings back the B-movie tradition of the 70's/80's-style slasher-flick, utilizing aesthetics with a combination of influences from 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', 'Friday the 13th', even 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' {particularly in the resemblence of 'Tiny's mangled face to Freddy Krueger}. These personages are based on Marx Brothers characters in name only - these are entirely "hellbilly" in countenance, consisting primarily of Captain Spaulding, Otis, and Baby Firefly, with a couple of side characters, who are veritably 'awakened' from their slumber by vengeful Police from the massacres in the previous film House of 1,000 Corpses". Mama Firefly is taken into custody, and Tiny is nowhere to be found...

Set in the Texas desert, this white-trash family, each with their own neurosis, bounce their particular insanities upon eachother, experiencing the joys and dangers of life on a caveman level of existance. After all, a family of wolves can at one moment enjoy a freshly slaughtered rabbit or deer together, happily tearing limb from limb, then go off to later play together.

After another shootout, the pursuit begins again and they are on the run, pulling all their resources together at the expense of others, calling upon the evil clown to accompany Otis and Baby in this latest predicament. So after Spaulding accesses a car in the name of "important clown business", the three are reunited, spreading terror upon all those they encounter, usually ridiculing, humiliating, mutilating, and otherwise raping their victims before finally killing them.

Along the way they meet up with pimp 'Charlie Altamont' {Ken Foree, whom you may recognize from 'From Beyond'} and have one hell of a time in wordly pleasures, until he pulls a veritable "Lando Calrisian"*, betraying the group to the crusading Sheriff. Charlie has more of a moron than an imbecile in a henchman named 'Clevon' {played by Michael Berryman: 'The Hills Have Eyes'}, engage in a particularly amusing scene while purchasing chickens from an inbred cletus.

Sheriff Wydell, who fancies himself a "devil slayer", readies himself for a 'final confrontation' - a veritable "apocalypse" in his mind, employing the aid of a couple of nefarious bounty hunters called "The Unholy Two", comprised of imposing bikers 'Rondo' and 'Billy Ray Snapper', who interrupt the festivities and construct arrangements to Wydell's specifications. Continuing with his revenge-fueled righteous christinsanity, besides photos of victims being stapled to their chests, Otis is actually nailed into his chair a-la the nazarene {the fact that he has long hair and a beard added to the effect greatly}, and are set to burn alive in a literal "Hell". Now the punctilious "hunter becomes the hunted" scenario transgresses. "The Angel" is let loose to be pursued by the wolf on her heels receiving a taste of her own medicine, but in one of those unexpected 'twists', just when all seems finished, a mysterious ally appears...

With the odds stacked against them, the movie ends in a hail of bullets to a final end...?

With a relatively all-star cast, there will be some recognizable familiarities from time to time. Herein is one Priscilla Barnes {'Terri Alden' from 'Three's Company'}, being slapped around, fondled, deceived, and stabbed. Geoffrey Lewis, who has one of those faces materializing from many formative evocations. Also amusing is the manner in which the last victim at the motel is dispatched - by pure horror. The skin from the face of her own husband is placed upon hers, where she is left dangling on the back of the door to be found by the screaming maid. She inadvertently does herself in.

This film displays, in an albeit base level, the might is right dynamic, and that man is a vicious animal in his most primal state, where so-called principles of 'good and evil' are completely subjective terms, where the clever and ruthless prevail, manipulating where necessary to gain selfish ends, moving the world according to what is placed into action. Perceptions will sometimes be tested in what one perceives is supposed to happen, and what actually can, and does happen.

_________

* Interestingly, it is noted that some scenes contain subtle 'Star Wars' references from time to time, from a mention of having a Princess Leia fetish, to the subsequent betrayal akin to Calrisian's on Han Solo for Darth Vader.

1 out of 5 stars Yes, this movie is so bad that even the devil would reject it!.......2007-06-12

Thil film depicts ultra violence and gore. It tries to scare the audience with brutal ways of killing people
but the acting was so bad it's laughable. For example, in one scene a person was being killed with an ax. The
killer hit his victim at least three times with an ax. The victim screamed and moaned but he continued
to talk! His face was covered with blood but it showed no pain at all. The make-up looked absolutely fake.
It's so boring that I rejected it from the player after finishing two-third of it.

There are much better horror movies which made me shudder. They are: Slither, Cabin Fever, 28 days later,
Pet Semetery and the Grudge.

Are you ready to get down with the sickness? Movie logic dictates that you shouldn't remake a classic, but Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead defies that logic and comes up a winner. You could argue that George A. Romero's 1978 original was sacred ground for horror buffs, but it was a low-budget classic, and Snyder's action-packed upgrade benefits from the same manic pacing that energized Romero's continuing zombie saga. Romero's indictment of mega-mall commercialism is lost (it's arguably outmoded anyway), so Snyder and screenwriter James Gunn compensate with the same setting--in this case, a Milwaukee shopping mall under siege by cannibalistic zombies in the wake of a devastating viral outbreak--a well-chosen cast (led by Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, and Mekhi Phifer), some outrageously morbid humor, and a no-frills plot that keeps tension high and blood splattering by the bucketful. Horror buffs will catch plenty of tributes to Romero's film (including cameos by three of its cast members, including gore-makeup wizard Tom Savini), and shocking images are abundant enough to qualify this Dawn as an excellent zombie-flick double-feature with 28 Days Later, its de facto British counterpart. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars THE WORLD IS TAKEN OVER BY ZOMBIES!!!.......2007-09-04

imagine that, i bet that'll give a scare. i love zombies, just about any horror flick with zombies will make my day. when this first came out, i had high expectations for it, and boy it sure didn't let me down. the first was great for being what it was, mad props. george romero is a wicked man, in a good sense. he does magic with all of his zombie movies. old and new. it's hard to do it like he does, no doubt. but this one, no doubt was up there as well. my kind of thing, the living dead, the blood, the chase, the victims, chaos everywhere! i applaude it as well. and the fact that the zombies were faster was a good idea. i mean it's creepier when they're slow, but when they're fast it's just excitement cause you don't know if they're going to get you or not. the remake was a good one i got to give it to them. the actors did a really good job, ving rhames is the man. great actor, much respect for him. the makeup was great too, overall it was very satisfying.

This is a really good movie. I give it 4 stars! I love horror films with zombies and what not.

2 out of 5 stars Great pre-credits sequence. Great credits. Too bad about the rest of the movie........2007-08-04

It looks like they stopped bothering to storyboard after the first fifteen minutes, so after a boffo opening we get the kind of sloppily executed action sequences (spaced out with slack "character" oriented filler) that could only have come from a director of music videos. (Method: Shoot a lot of stuff and force some kind of sense on it in the editing - we're seeing a LOT of that nowadays, and there is a difference between effectively conveyed chaos, and the merely chaotic.) The characters aren't particularly engaging, and the zombie baby was ripped off from 'The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue' (a.k.a. 'Let Sleeping Corpses Lie') which is actually a somewhat more enjoyable rip-off of Romero's zombies than this rip-off, I think. Romero's vision, while considerably less slick, was more personal and more grandly apocalyptic - although not gnat-sized attention-span ready, which is okay because I don't actually care for movies that are like watching someone else play a video game. Anyway, after the terrific opening, the rest of the movie is a major let-down, and there's nothing much to look forward to until the end credits, which like the opening credits, are excellent.

I don't have any real interest in Snyder after seeing this. '300' looks awfully silly, artificial and cartoonish - but it may benefit from having a graphic novel source - which is just the sort of thing that can make a director (too lazy to plan his action scenes) look a lot better than he actually is. (See 'Sin City.') I am still undecided as to whether or not I want to bother, though, because I am getting sick of big budget movies that are too cheap to spring for actual exteriors.

DotD remake: mediocre. not a complete waste of time, but pretty close. Actually, it's a great metaphor for itself - the walking dead version of Romero's film. It moves around more quickly, but that is neither here nor there. The original material had a soul and this is just one of the legion of shambling brain dead, creatively necrotic stinkers that have been plaguing our multiplexes - things that were once movies. I'd sentence the director to repeated viewings of the films of Sam Peckinpah so he could learn how to stage effective action scenes (not to mention character building) - but I shudder to think that he might be inspired to give us his own version of 'The Wild Bunch,' so scratch that. Just shoot him in the head.

(The first 10-15 minutes or so ARE good, though.)

3 out of 5 stars Could be better........2007-07-26

Let me start off this review by saying that I haven't seen the original Dawn of the Dead so if you're looking for a comparison between the original and the remake, this review isn't for you. I've seen a couple "of the Dead" movies (including the comedic version, Shaun of the Dead") and I am entertained by the movies in general. However, this particular movie has way too many flaws to simply forget.

So what's this movie about? Basically, as in most movies in the zombie genre, a woman named Sarah wakes up to find that the world has been overtaken by zombies. The rest of the movie has her, as well as a few others, finding a way to survive.

Let's go over the positives first. First, fans of zombie movies will be thrilled with the typical, yet entertaining storyline. Although some may find the plot to be unoriginal, I think the plot is one that never gets old. Furthermore, there's quite a few surprises and twists that improve the storyline. Generally, I found this movie to move along rather nicely with only a few dull moments here and there. Also, there were a couple of jokes here and there that I found amusing.

And now for the negatives. Acting-wise, this film is borderline awful. The only actor I recognize is Mekhi Phifer and even he isn't all that great in this movie. Maybe it's not the actors themselves rather than the writing that makes this film not that great. I'm assuming that the writers didn't want to take this film seriously considering the large amount of unreasonable reactions from the characters. For example, without giving too much away, I'll ask you if you were put in these characters' shoes, would you find it important to have sex knowing that zombies are directly outside the building you're having sex in (clearly this scene was thrown in to attract more people to watch the film, I found it rather pathetic), would you attempt to start a relationship with another person rather than come up with a way to survive, would you throw yourself in a crowd of zombies in order to save a dog that you just met? Rather than feeling fear and sympathy for these characters, I felt like screaming "Just kill them already!" at the TV. Or maybe this movie is NOT meant to be taken seriously. Either way, I found these flaws to be too overbearing to brush off.

Bottom line, if you're looking for a good zombie movie that'll instill a bit of fear in you, stay away from this one. It's filled with too many holes to be considered good by any means.

5 out of 5 stars great gore, gruesomeness, and fun.......2007-07-23

Well, it's fun if you like end-of-the-world movies as I do. A terrific cast and taut direction help to make this by turns frightening, depressing, humorous and outrageous. The opening sequence, with the morning of first attacks and then the opening credits with the song "When the man comes around" by Johnny Cash, is one of the best things ever filmed. In fact, the soundtrack is one of the strengths of the film.
And just to let you know: zombies are much scarier when they run after you, as opposed to shuffling!

If you think you hate your job, think again. Francesco Dellamorte (Rupert Everett), the titular Cemetery Man, lives a lonely life with a dead-end career. He works and resides in a cemetery that holds a dark, hidden secret. You see, those who are buried in Dellamorte's cemetery have the tendency to rise from the dead. Francesco's job is to make sure the dead remain dead. When they rise, he must hunt them down and ensure they get their eternal rest. Since his strange career takes up most of his time, there is no room in his life for romance or friendship. His sole companion is his mute, Igor-like assistant Gnaghi (François Hadji-Lazaro). Not surprisingly, Francesco has grown weary of the dull drum and repetitive routine his job and life have become. It is not until he meets the girl of his dreams (Anna Falchi), who happens to be a widow attending her husband's funeral, that Francesco realizes that there may be more to life than this. Sound a bit odd? Well, it is. But fans of the zombie and the "twentysomething disgruntled worker" genres will feel right at home with this Michele Soavi cult favorite. At its center, Cemetery Man is a black comedy/existential mediation on loneliness and career disappointment. But where Fight Club is entrenched in an action/buddy-flick setting and Office Space is a strict black comedy, Cemetery Man is staged deep in the Italian zombie genre, giving it extra points for originality. --Rob Bracco

Description

Rupert Everett (MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING) stars as Francesco Dellamorte, a cemetery watchman whose job is to slaughter the living dead when they rise hungry from their graves. But following a tragic tryst with a lusty young widow (stunning Anna Falchi in one of three sexy roles), Francisco begins to ponder the mysteries of existence. Is there long-term satisfaction in blasting the skulls of `returners'? Will his imbecile assistant find happiness with the partial girl-corpse of his dreams? And if death is the ultimate act of love, can a psychotic killing spree send Dellamorte to the brink of enlightenment? Italian horror master Michele Soavi (STAGE FRIGHT) directed this brilliantly bloody black comedy — also known as DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE — that Gore Score calls "a deliciously demented, delightfully surreal stew of sex, death, splatter, male-bonding, barfing, zombies and nothing less than the Ultimate Meaning of Life!"

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one of my all time favorites.......2007-08-21

I won't go into a lot of detail regarding why I think this movie is great, plenty of people have written reviews here that have already done that.
It seems this movie either gets 1 star or 5 stars - obiviously it is very polarizing. I rank this movie amongst my all time favorites and I believe that if you appreciate some or all of these other movies, you may want to give Cemetary Man a try:
Donnie Darko, American Beauty, Susperia(+Inferno), Blade Runner, THX-1138, Lost in Translation, The Big Lebowski.

4 out of 5 stars Scary fun and silly Italian style campy zombie flick ... what's not to love?.......2007-08-20

This has got everything you want from a zombie flick and more -- it looks great, it's very funny, a little bit sexy, and over the top insane. A man with few prospects in life and little hope takes a job at a cemetery where the dead come back to life. His job is to make sure they stay buried, and he's good at it until he falls in love with the beautiful widow of his latest patron, and his Igor-like assistant falls in love with the dead daughter of the town mayor. Then mayhem and absurdity run wild until the film ends on a bizarre (and not entirely satisfying) twist. Filmed in a style that recalls that of the great Italian horror maestros like Argento and Bava, but hilarious and over the top crazy. All in all, it's a fun ride for those who think they've seen every twist on the zombie genre -- this one has something different for you.

5 out of 5 stars CEMETARY MAN.....BUY IT........2007-08-09

I first seen this flick on encore, while i was in middle school. it was unlike any movie i had ever seen before. it had an add storyline which included zombies, a really beautiful girl who does get nude(and when yer in middle school, watching encore, thats what its all about), and a crazed rupert everett....theres a whole SLEW of awesome deaths, scary twists, great one liners, catchy poetic narratives and an ending that will confuse the hell out of you. its a movie that while watching i got chills. i would gladly refer this movie to anyone who enjoys quirky horror classics. the movie is just so damn odd...but i really liked it and so do a myriad of other people out there. read a few more reviews if you like....but i would just say buy it right now.

5 out of 5 stars Poetic horror at it's finest!.......2007-07-30

The savior of Italian horror Michele Soavi directed this beautifully disturbing zombie flick, a movie that should be in every horror fanatics collection. This film is about a man who tends to a cemetery night and day, keeping things in order, and of course keeps the dead from rising from their grave. For some reason at this cemetery, the dead don't like to stay down! This is a gore filled zombie movie with comedic elements, and a very "poetic" vibe to it. Somewhere between Dead Alive and Dawn of the Dead, this one's got plenty of gore!!
This movie came out in 1994 when Italian cinema had died down for some time, and many hailed Michele Soavi as the savior of Italian cinema. This is without a doubt one of the best Italian, or anywhere for that matter, movies to have ever been made.
Cemetary Man is a masterpiece of Italian cinema that even the master of horror Dario Argento should be envious of.
LONG LIVE ITALIAN HORROR!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best........2007-05-31

This film is an amazing horror film, great story, good characters and amazing effects. This flick has it all, blood, gore, sex, splatter, and great visual's with the graveyard, espessially at night. Truly great horror film with all the ingredients of true horror included.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Monsters are real.......2007-09-03

This one could be scary for kids 6 and under. The monsters (ghosts, zombies, demons) turn out to be real (Daphne wishes early on that she wants to catch a real ghost for once, instead of someone in a costume), so... The story isn't half bad (young kids won't follow the lore), and there is a lot of action. Overall, my son (age 4) thinks this one is great because of all the "really scary ghosts." I'd recommend it for Scooby fans who don't scare easily and want the thrill of a real monster.

5 out of 5 stars The best Scooby Doo movie of all time........2007-06-16

This is a great movie for the older fans, and not so goofy a kiddy like the other ones. Great story, great music, great animation, great writing, everything fits. And to the nutty parents that gave it a 1 out of 5 stars, you really need to go read what a review is about. You can't give it that kind of rating just because it's not for the age you thought it was. Just look at the box and the title! It's obvious.

4 out of 5 stars Still love the old ones best........2007-05-19

I still love the old Scooby-Doo's the best but this is not half bad. My 3 y.o. loves Scooby-Doo and has really enjoyed this one. Especially since I bought it for him.

5 out of 5 stars the only one.......2007-05-06

That's right, the only scooby doo cartoon where the monsters are real. This one is my husband's favorite just for that reason. It's a great scooby and fits in with the long line of scooby classics as well as any new scooby could despite the plot variation of the "real" monsters.

1 out of 5 stars Scooby Doo on Zombie Island.......2007-03-31

This one is very disappointing! The original episodes of "Scooby Doo Where Are You" (4 dvd set) absolutey deserve 5 stars. Most of the newer episodes of "What's New Scooby Doo?" deserve 4 stars, and most of the full length movies deserve 3 stars or better. However, "Scooby Doo on Zombie Island" gets the lowest possible score. The character voices for Shaggy and Velma are so distracting (especially Shaggy) that it is hard to even follow!!!

    Description

In this hilarious send-up of Lovecraftian horror and steampunk adventure, President Abraham Lincoln's top spy is a bodyless head known only as Screw-On Head (Paul Giamatti). When arch-fiend Emperor Zombie (David Hyde Pierce) steals an artifact that will enable him to threaten all life on Earth, the task of stopping him is assigned to Screw-on Head. Fortunately, Screw-On Head is not alone on this perilous quest. He is aided by his multitalented manservant, Mr. Groin, and by his talking canine cohort, Mr. Dog. Can this unorthodox trio stop Emperor Zombie in time? Does Screw-On Head have a body awesome enough to stop the horrors that have been unleashed? Where can we get a talking dog? All these questions (O.K., maybe not that last one) are answered by the thrilling tale of The AMAZING SCREW ON HEAD! Based on the award-winning comic book by Mike Mignola, creator of HELLBOY.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars creepy cool and funny as hell........2007-09-12

For any Mignola fans you must see this. For those of you that are not, this is a creepy little take on historical fiction. The animation works well for this and has that hellboy feel to it. This short is hysterically funny and witty and much to savvy and cutting edge for American audiences that really don't like too much that falls left of fart jokes and people falling down while their family member catches it on video. This would make a great series if they could have found an audience. Great voice over work and cast really made this one a keeper. There is only one episode on this DVD but worth it if you're a fan of these types of works by people much more creative than you or I

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest.......2007-09-05

I don't know if it's must because this fits my sense of humor so closely but I love this show. I've watched it many times and I love the animation and the sort of subtle jokes. Brillant voice work as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Witness the All-Powerful...Radish? .......2007-04-25

Through-out the pages of picturesque fantasy, Mike Mignola has to be one of the most brilliant storytellers ever to put pen to paper. I say that because of his understanding of so many elements of what a story comprises; he has a handle on characterization, a mind that knows how to mingle mythos with a world people understand, and he has a style that people recognize and that has become a signature piece that people either love or dislike. People familiar with his work on Hellboy will immediately recognize this piece, and people familiar with Mignola's story The Screw-On Head will notice that this is simply it placed on a beautifully-conceived DVD. People who are not should know that Mignola likes to create something akin to a fairytale, add in dashes of Pulp icons and more pieces of this-and-that where to keep you on your toes and to make you laugh when you really don't expect it, and really earn the name he has been building for himself.

For anyone that has not heard of the concept on this short (notice the word short) piece, the character Screw-On Head is something of a National Security asset that keeps the States safe from things that would make a person go mad if they knew such things existed. Utilizing cutting edge technology in the time of Lincoln, Head does battle with monsters and former sidekicks and with beasts that want to enter the planes we know as sanity and introduce humanity to a world of... well, let's just say it isn't the world of plush puppies and Hello Kitty. The things encountered are rather odd, too...a black hole containing an ancient god contained within radish says a lot for what you encounter. The humor is absolutely brilliant there. The character is pretty funny, too, being a head that, well, screw on. You get the idea.

If you do not mind the length (you should know it is VERY short), see the art style and find it appealing, and just want something to entertain you because it is entertainment at its best then you should check it out. Fans of Hellboy (more the comic than the movie) should stop here for a taste and people who find articulate zombie butlers bent on killing every butler a person has afterwards as some kind of private payback joke funny should try it on as well. It really will surprise you if given a chance.

    4 out of 5 stars Different.......2007-04-21

The only bad thing is that the film is too short. It'erie but, fun.I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Groin's looking out for your behind, Head!.......2007-04-16

I read the single issue of Amazing Screw-On Head when it came out a few years back, and thought it was hysterical. I'm happy to say, this animated version is equally as entertaining. The animation, unlike the Hellboy animated movie that came out recently, is Mike Mignola's artwork literally translated into animation. Absolutely fantastic. Panels are taken directly from the comic and basically the "area's between" are filled in seamlessly. All the humor, both the obvious and the subtle, are also present and will have you laughing out loud. The cast is all terrific, especially Paul Giamatti as Screw-On Head and David Hyde-Pierce as the dreaded Emperor Zombie. The bonus mini-documentary is really interesting as well, containing interviews with the creative team, including Mike Mignola. The video itself is only 22 minutes long and the documentary is almost as long at 17 minutes, but it's worth every second!
