Amazon.com essential video

In the fall of 1979, Sam Raimi and his merry band headed into the woods of rural Tennessee to make a movie. They emerged with a roller coaster of a film packed with shocks, gore, and wild humor, a film that remains a benchmark for the genre. Ash (cult favorite Bruce Campbell) and four friends arrive at a backwoods cabin for a vacation, where they find a tape recorder containing incantations from an ancient book of the dead. When they play the tape, evil forces are unleashed, and one by one the friends are possessed. Wouldn't you know it, the only way to kill a "deadite" is by total bodily dismemberment, and soon the blood starts to fly. Raimi injects tremendous energy into this simple plot, using the claustrophobic set, disorienting camera angles, and even the graininess of the film stock itself to create an atmosphere of dread, punctuated by a relentless series of jump-out-of-your-seat shocks. The Evil Dead lacks the more highly developed sense of the absurd that distinguish later entries in the series--Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness--but it is still much more than a gore movie. It marks the appearance of one of the most original and visually exciting directors of his generation, and it stands as a monument to the triumph of imagination over budget. --Simon Leake

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Horror Movie!.......2007-09-14

I first saw this movie Back in The Mid 80's when I was a kid.I remember it scarying me to death! And I watched Again Late last year first time in almost 20 years and I must of jumped a good 5 times watching This Classic Horror Movie!
If You are looking For a Horror movie that is Creepy, Scary & Gory This Movie is for you!
I would have to Put The Evil Dead In My Top 10 List Of Favorite Horror Movie's!

4 out of 5 stars Great Low-Budget start to one of the best horror trilogies of all time!.......2007-09-12

There is no comparison nor contest between this timeless horror classic and any of the trash they now call horror movies! This movie is truly a moment in time and a step back in time to one incredible golden age for movies. In other words this movie is awesome! It's frightening, It's shocking, It's memorable, oh and did I say timeless! I will shred you that the special effects are dated, the acting's not too good, and this movie is very gorey and very violent however that aside you get treated to a unique story with unique characters in a gothic and intriguing atmosphere and you get treated to a story the likes by which have never quite been done before. Above all else you get to see how a movie can be brilliant, unique, extraordinary, intriguing, and timeless on such a small budget. In closing dare I say speaking from all of us who already know and embrace this movie "Join Us"!

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL CLASSIC!!.......2007-08-30

this is one of my favorite movies, it rocked back in the day and it still does. the acting is good the makeup is good everything is great. it's a classic worth gold. bruce campbell and his team did a beautiful job. the setting is great, the horror, and you just have to watch it to understand. and the two movies after this are just as good. i applaud this series.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Flick.......2007-08-10

This movie set the stage (and a high bar) for campy horror flicks that followed. For fun, I researched the "prequel" that Sam Raimi put together for less than $2K called "Within the Woods," which he used to attract more funding for "Evil Dead." It's 30 minutes of raw footage, and quite spooky.

4 out of 5 stars cool package..........2007-07-26

but I like parts 2 and 3 better. I got this movie because I got excited over the cocept of a book of the dead limited edition, so I just had to have this from a collector's/completist's point of view. Beware of the trees in the dark forest! They will get you! I haven't viewed any extras yet, but I'm saving those for a special stormy dark night!
Oh, and by the way, Bruce Campbell is awsome...

4 out of 5 stars Badly acted and Stupid but....Hilarious!.......2007-05-03

Critics are soooo judgemental and overly serious that of course they threw this movie one star easily. Hell I could toss it one star easily too because I see everything that is bad about it. But I still can't help but to see it as great fun ayway. It stars Jonathan Silverman and Andrew McCarthy as 2 bafoons who wanna work for a rich businessman named Bernie Lomax (Terry Kiser). They know something about his business that they don't realize he wants to kill them for knowing.

He invites them for a weekend at his beach home but he gets killed before they get there. They slowly realize that he's dead and people on the island are slower than them because they just don't see that he's dead. So they fake him being alive just so they can live it up and enjoy his place to themselves. They soon have to save themselves from the guy who killed Bernie. The result is a really really stupid movie with pretty awful acting but will you enjoy the movie anyway ? Hell yes! Terry Kiser actually is hilarious and gives a fun performance as...a dead body. It's silly that no one can even tell that Bernie is dead and try to carry conversations with him. Hell his g/f has sex with him and doesn't even know she had sex with a dead body.

Of course those are good reasons critics gave it one star but to me those are good reasons to enjoy how stupid this movie is. I mean why just give a movie one star when it's at least well done enough to get some good laughs. If you wanna see garbage that's not only easy to just toss one star but Zero Stars, then see Weekend at Bernies 2! Plus when Men at Work did something similar with a dead body it wasn't as clever and well done as this movie or as funny.

5 out of 5 stars Funny movie.......2007-04-21

Bernie's dies but noboies knows it, he act like he's still alive.
Great acting by Terry Kiser!

5 out of 5 stars entertainment.......2007-03-26

I always fall asleep during movies. I found this one to be very funny. Better than the first Bernie's.

4 out of 5 stars Death can be funny, right?.......2007-03-09

This movie can be cheesy at times, and the plot falters a little at times, but it is hilarious and I get nostalgic every time I watch it. I loved the shooting scene and Bernie's Porsche cart. Oh, and when the drunk mobster's girlfriend comes over looking for Bernie. Super funny. It's a typical 80s movie. The DVD format is nice too.

PS (to E. Kutinsky) I believe the movie was set in New York.

5 out of 5 stars Classic black humour of 80's.......2007-01-21

Fantastic film that i first saw when i was little and i like it still. Amazing black humour, nice and relaxing comedy. After 20 years is still funny: funny actors, funny scenario and just 5 stars.

Dead Aim: House of the Dead 2 (Michael Hurst, 2005)

Uwe Boll did not direct House of the Dead 2. Thus, almost by default, the sequel had to be better than the original. However, they installed Michael Hurst, of Room 6 fame. You get what you pay for, I guess.

Hurst (who, along with directing these two dogs, also wrote the screenplays for Edward Gorsuch's The Butcher and the funniest Sci-Fi Original Movie of all time, Mansquito) makes a movie that's less a sequel to Uwe Boll's crapfest than a totally unrelated zombie movie, and that, I have to say, was a really good decision. In this flick, a virus strikes a university, turning some of its denizens into flesh-crazed zombies. (Note: Mike, you could have done a lot with the idea of fraternity house zombies. Just sayin'.) Enter AMS, a government agency not much liked by anyone, and a bunch of soldiers. Yes, you're thinking what I'm thinking, aren't you? I kept waiting for one of the soldiers to ask if they were going on another bug hunt. The twist here is that AMS believes it can develop a vaccine if they can get blood from the first zombie, so the team has to find that first zombie.

The requisite yumness is provided by horror veteran Emmanuelle Vaugier and My Name Is Earl beauty Nadine Velasquez, and the requisite cameo is provided by Sid Haig, and other than that, honestly, there's nothing much more to say. It's typical, standard fare that doesn't stand out in any way. If you're looking for a way to kill an hour and a half, this will do the trick better than some and worse than many. * ½

5 out of 5 stars move over resident evil.......2007-05-07

For those of you that grew up watching the classic zoombie movies such as night of the living dead this movie is for you. A millitary team must neutralize a school zone and collect a blood sample from a Zombie after and outbreak. This the second movie in the house of the dead series. If you like this I also recommend the Resenent evil movie. This movie should be fine for kids ages 17 up do to heavy gore language and other inappropriate content. Can the millitary send these zombie back to the depths of hades find out in the thrilling conclusion.

3 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it..........2007-04-21

I don't think that it even bares mentioning that this is a step up from Uwe Boll's fantastic turd fest that was the original House of the Dead. If you're a fan of zombie movies, then this sequel is definitely up your ally, its tongue-in-cheek humor and silliness combined with a few points of genuine originality make for a fun view.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay.......2007-04-08

A professor tries to bring back the dead and accidentally creates a zombie virus that threatens the whole world. A secret government agency is sent to save the day. The zombies were okay, but the dialoque at times was ridiculous. All the male characters acted the same, and were hard to tell apart. It's really a 1 star movie, I only gave it 3 stars because I think Emauelle Vagier is a beautiful woman with a distinct gravely voice and she could be a big star if she got better parts. Still, if you are a zombie fan check this movie out on a slow night.

3 out of 5 stars IMPROVEMENT OVER THE FIRST, ONLY JUST.......2007-03-07

Im a huge fan of zombie movies, but I have a few criticisms of the two House of the Dead movies.

I dont know where they were going with the first movie because they just rushed it. There's no connection whatsoever between the movie and the three House of the Dead video games, maybe that wasnt their intention so I really didnt like the first one.

The second one also had no association with the video games but the style of the movie did resemble what we play in the arcades. There were a number of flaws in the movie but the biggest one that I thought was ridiculous was if humans are vunerable to infection by a zombie through bite or scratch, what about contact to zombie blood. I do give points for the gore, but when they're covered in zombie blood wouldnt they eventually become infected anyway?. Just doesnt make sense.

Description

When a group of criminals on the run after a bank robbery take refuge in an abandoned house, they have no idea what evil they have come upon. Isolated and presumed deserted, the house is anything but safe...As the night wears on and a thunderstorm grows outside, each member of the group begins to have visions of the atrocities that occurred within the house, haunting it forever. Voices in the well, visions of mangled bodies and clawing under the stairs plague their waking hours. As the fear in the group begins to grow and the supernatural forces in the house start to manifest themselves, the group turn on each other and exact the wrath of the soul trapped within the walls.

5 out of 5 stars Way South Of Dixie..........2007-08-05

A band of confederate soldiers, led by Henry Thomas, rob a bank, killing everyone inside and out, and head for a plantation-home hide-out. DEAD BIRDS has an exquisite atmosphere of building dread, that starts right at the beginning. The ruthless robbers are soon thrust into a supernatural nightmare, and are ill-equipped to handle the terror that awaits them! One by one they meet the horrifying inhabitants of the house, as the dead reach for the living, and reveal their secrets. DB is oldschool scary w/ some surprising gore elements tossed in for added impact. Check out those things creeping around in the cornfield! Yikes!...

2 out of 5 stars This B movie earns a C.......2007-08-01

The movie started out interesting and I have to admit I did enjoy watching it through. The setup was fair but about the mid-point things just start to go onto cruise control and become typical horror movie stuff. For me it felt like the movie started out with its own uniqueness and then that fell away later leaving this movie with nothing to set it apart. In addition, there were are couple of convoluted scenes and plot/story holes that I felt did not get resolved.

The movie opens with a group of men (well, one woman too) stealing some bags of gold coin from a bank in some southern locale (I'm sure it said where the story was supposed to be based in the opening somewhere) killing a large number of people in the process, many of the deaths unnecessary. Some reviewers have commented that this sequence was gruesome but I found it phony (don't worry, the special effects do get a little better).

So, after the robbery the group takes refuge in some abandoned plantation house surrounded by an eerie corn field. The movie stops in a couple parts to tell you how they knew of this plantation and who it belonged to, but I never found that story to be fully developed. Did the person that told them about the plantation tell them so in passing or did he expect them to eventually take refuge there? If the latter, why did he want them to go there?

Anyway, things are not as peaceful as they seem. Soon we meet ghostly manifestations that want to do harm to our bandits but always do so off the screen so we are left with an idea what happened to them but we don't actually get to see it. The motivation behind the ghosts threatening behavior is made known by one ghost in specific who tells one of our hapless robbers everything you had been asking yourself up to that point in a succinct and straight-forward "I had to do it" speech. Hmm, OK, so there is all the mystery gone. Now it is just a matter of killing people off and there isn't anything particularly original and scary about how that is done. I admit the beast in the corn field both at the beginning and then end was pretty cool though.

As far as acting goes, I thought it was on par with my expectations of what it should be. The gentleman who also starred in "Almost Famous" (I'm too lazy to look up his name right now) I felt especially did a fine job.

Overall, I wasn't impressed with the movie and didn't think it was the sleeper hit that much of the hype around it had led me to believe it would be.

1 out of 5 stars WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED............2007-07-22

This movie sounded promising to me at first.
I was looking forward to the Civil War era setting and the atmosphere of the old plantation.
But I must not have read the other reviews closely enough.
I'm not a 'gorehound', and I found this film to be quite gory.
Showing victims being skinned alive and other graphic scenes are scary, but it's not the kind of suspense such as 'The Others', which I'm STILL trying to find an equal to.
The plot ending, which would explain exactly why the 'spirits' are there and why they're doing what they're doing - is hazy. And I don't understand what happened to the children.
I believe this could have been a film with more depth, if it hadn't been for all the gore.

5 out of 5 stars Don't look under your bed!.......2007-06-06

I am a horror movie junkie and although I know I am about a year late catching this movie but I'm glad I watched it. I haven't jumped in my seat at a horror movie that much in long time. Dead Birds is a creepy good time. This movie has a great story. Set during the Civil War bank robbers hold up in an abandoned plantation. Well, it's abandonded for a reason. It's haunted! It's haunted but not just by ghosts but other worldly demons. Infact that whole part of the story has a very Lovecraftian feel to it which I really liked. This is a movie with genuine suspense and some great effects/gore. It has a great combination of suspense and gore. The cast is very good even though in my humble oppinion the female lead was the weakest. Two huge thumbs up in my book.

Be warned! Don't look under your bed.

1 out of 5 stars Dead Birds.......2007-05-20

Dead Birds should have been entitled, Dead Ducks! It wasn't the actors, it was the plot! Something (skinned dog manufactured out of spent gum?) attacks the 5 people heading for the old farm and they are forced to kill it before they even get close. Hmmmm, not too promising in my book! Nevertheless, the group continues to the old farm and spend lots of time wandering around the interior (neat old house!) There is also the subplot of the original owner who turned his children into little sneaky things with sharp teeth via cutting up his slaves. Of course, we don't really know why he did this or for what purpose. The kids only show up two or three times to scare someone and their moment of glory is so fast you have to stop frame them to get the full effect. In spite of the feelings of unrest and the fact that characters regularly walk out of the house and disappear, the group continues to stay. Personally, I would have kept walking on down the road after the gumby dog showed up; go figure!

The usual slasher-movie teens charter a boat to attend a rave in Washington's San Juan islands, find zombies there, and splatter their guts all over the place. House of the Dead shows early promise when the boat captain is the dude from Das Boot (Jürgen Prochnow) and the mate is the inimitably weird Clint Howard. Alas, things devolve from there. The movie includes frequent flashes from its video game inspiration, not that we need much reminding of the obvious source. Amongst the rotten dialogue, bad acting, and gratuitous topless scenes, there's one looooong shootout sequence in the middle of the picture that should be the main attraction for fans of this kind of thing. Otherwise, it's at the level of every other slasher movie, video game or no video game, in which stupid people do stupid things to keep themselves in harm's way. --Robert Horton

1 out of 5 stars it's horrible but.................2007-09-11

Movies like this you have to take them for what they are, first of all. I mean did anyone really not expect it to be horrible to begin with? Seriously if you just say to your brain "I wont be needing you for the next 90 minutes" pop up some pop corn, maybe order a pizza, curl up on the sofa to a movie like this (or one of those equally rancid Sci Fi channel original movies starring Lance Henrickson) it can actually make for a pretty entertaining Saturday night! You people want art? Go rent the GODFATHER, geez!?!?

1 out of 5 stars Uwe Boll please stop!.......2007-08-23

Wow, i am almost at a lost for words on how putrid this movie is. Uwe Boll might just be the worst director in history. I would recommend that you never buy an Uwe Boll film. If you rent one of his movies make sure that you don't have a big meal before it because you might lose your lunch.

1 out of 5 stars It's that bad.......2007-05-22

Can't anyone make a good zombie movie outside of the 'Dead' movies? Even some of them are pretty lame. Aside from over endulgence in gore let's talk acting here. Now I know that in these types of movie acting shouldn't matter, but here it is plain bad. Stilted actors and lame dialog.

I usually like a Dead movie, been a fan ever since as a boy it took me 7 tries before I finally made it all the way through the origianl 'Night of the LIving Dead' (which in my opinion is the best of any). But this one was bad.

No sense of logic, the heroes extracate themselves from a 'hopeless' situation near the end oh so easily, and don't get me started on the ending fight sequence. I did like the way she popped the leader's head like a pimple however. Thought that was fun.

Just another in a long line of poorly done movies that should be reserved for Sat afternoon on the SciFi Channel.

1 out of 5 stars LOL.......2007-04-17

I think they should implement a new rating system on amazon for movies. In this system it would implement two scores. one score: viewing while sober, and the other viewing while drunk.

now the one star rating i gave this movie as you see above, is obviously the not drunk rating. what you get here is one of the most nonsensical shoddy sloppy ridiculous movies of all time. uwe boll sucks at directing, i dont care how mad he gets or how many people he challenges to a boxing match (notice he weeds out the challengers so he only faces unexperienced fighters). i cant stand these quick cut fast moving hey we are in a music video like sequences that holywood is putting in movies nowadays. and this movie is choke full of those. not to mention horrid acting, horrid dialogue, and a story line that just plain says suck!!!!

now, if you watch this movie drunk (i do not condone the abuse of alcohol in any way) (unfortunatly i think watching this movie sober might actually be more dangerous to your health that alcohol is) then i shall give this movie 5 stars. seriously. gather a bunch of your friends, grab a 6 pack of beer or what ever you drink, and watch away. seriously, i believe this movie would be the greatest episode of mystery science theater 3000 EVER... absolutly wild and zany fun is to be had of this...

ps: this trick only works with this movie. all other uwe boll movies have been made to suck in all ways, drunk or sober....alone in the dark....cries...

2 out of 5 stars I'm the most generous..........2006-12-06

I'll start by saying that I do agree with most of the reviewers here, the movie was really bad. One of the stars I gave is for the good looking cast, unfortunately they can't act at all. Only at the beginning of the movie there are a few moments that makes you jump reason why I gave another star (2 in total), but after that, the movie gets ridiculous, no action, no good video effects (they ran out of $$ I bet) bad acting gets even more stupid, the fighting is horrendous, and the scenes of the game included in the movie don't help at all, instead they make it worst. At the end I was laughing so much, not because it's a good funny movie, but because I could not believe I was watching such an idiotic movie that I spent $8.00 to own. That been said, the only reason to watch it, is to laugh while you discover all the fails and lacks in directing, acting, editing, etc

Weekend at Bernie's starts when two lowly clerks at an insurance agency uncover a $2 million fraud and report it to their boss, Bernie (Terry Kiser). Unfortunately for them, Bernie is the one behind the fraud, and he invites them to his island beach house for the weekend, where he intends to have them killed by his mob contacts. Unfortunately for Bernie, the mob decides to rub him out instead--and thus begin the necrotic hijinks. The clerks, Richard (Jonathan Silverman) and Larry (Andrew McCarthy), arrive and discover Bernie's body. At first they panic and start to call the police, but when a party of islanders sweeps in, Richard and Larry also discover that the local residents are so self-absorbed they don't notice that Bernie is dead. So if our heroes can just convince everyone that Bernie is still alive for they weekend, they can have a splendid time. Unfortunately, they also convince the mob hitman, who keeps trying to take Bernie out. Weekend at Bernie's was made at the height of 1980s fashion and features many amusing outfits and hairstyles--often the styles are funnier than the dialogue, and the characters are tissue-paper thin. Still, there's no denying that the movie chugs along from bit to bit and never takes itself more seriously than it should. A cheerful, disposable piece of fluff. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars VERY FUN!!.......2006-06-05

Like a lot of the reviewers are saying, this movie is just fun!!
While the actors might not get any awards from critics, they would definitely get awards from the common moviewatcher!
They're hilarious and everything that they need to be for a movie like this, maybe even more.

This movie is very entertaining and it will pull you out of any bad mood that you might be in.

Take a chance on this one, it's worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Even better than The Parent Trap!.......2006-06-04

A short review this time I'm afraid as I was too busy laughing to make notes as I was watching. Sidesplitting corpse based capers!

5 out of 5 stars "This guy gets laid more dead, than I do alive!".......2006-05-08

I am giving this 5 stars not because it is an Oscar-worthy masterpiece - it's not. Not because it is the most clever and witty film ever - it's not. This movie gets better with time. Or maybe it just stays the same. I don't know. It is a FUN, silly and whacked out 80s movie. I love it.

I love the opposites-attract chemistry between Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman... I love the sub-plot with Silverman and the girl that he keeps trying to win over... and I love that Terry Kiser managed to keep that smirk on his face for the entire movie.

This movie was in NO way meant to be taken seriously and they knew that. It is so ridiculous, that if you even try to take it seriously on any level it'll ruin it for you. Just sit back with some friends and have a good laugh. This is an awesome summer movie.

I love so many 80s comedies as it is, so I'm biased... This one is still one of my favorites though due to it's sheer silliness.

3 out of 5 stars Typical 80's movie.......2006-02-17

Weekend at Bernies is a comedy about two employees of a accounting firm. The two employees are best friends with different personalities. Richard is the hard working, do everything by the book employee and Larry is just the opposite. He's lazy and care-free. They are told to transform all the accounting books into the new computer system. When they do this they uncover that someone has been stealing from the company. When they bring this to the attention to Bernie Lomax (who is the company CEO) Lomax tells them that they have done good work and invites them to his beach house for the weekend. The two employees accept the offer and are on cloud nine. But while Richard and Larry are now planning for a vacation, Bernie Lomax is planning to have them killed for uncovering his defrauding the company. But the poeple that Bernie has paid to have the two guys killed instead instructs his hitmen to kill Lomax because he was getting to gready and he is sleeping with his girlfriend. So the hitman kills Lomax by injecting him with a needle. Richard and Larry are shocked that Lomax has died and then some of the locals come to party at Lomax's house and no one notices he is dead except for Larry and Richard. So the two of them pretend that Lomax isn't dead until the uncover what happened. If you like stupid comedy, then this is for you. When I saw this in the movies, I asked the same queston that I am asking now. How can anyone not know that this guy isn't dead?

5 out of 5 stars Weekend at Bernie's.......2005-10-13

This was a very hilarous movie from the time Richard and Larry arrive at Bernie's beach house to the closing scene. It was so amazing how a "dead" Bernie could get around so many places and even host a party. Terry Kiser is fabulous playing the part of Bernie. Jonathon Silverman and Andrew McCarthy just rounded off the leading men team.

The idea of communicating with the dead is one of those ancient and timeless human fascinations. Just turn on your television or check out the movie listings. Ghost stories depend on the entertainment premise known as suspending one's disbelief. The Richard Hugo house on Capital Hill in Seattle was built in 1902. In the '40s, the house was converted into a funeral parlor. In the mid-'90s, it was converted into an artistic space. At this time, the house began having some hauntings which is where AGHOST, the Amateur Ghost Hunters of Seattle-Tacoma, comes into the story. They are the largest paranormal research group in the Northwest. The men and women of AGHOST include ghost believers and skeptics. But when strange things start to happen, everyone starts to wonder. "Nightline" follows these modern day 'Ghostbusters" into the spooky Richard Hugo house in Seattle. Anchor: Chris Bury.

What else could you want, sex, humor, horror and kitsch
Big names, nekked women and blood, my kind of film

4 out of 5 stars Gripping and Grinning.......2007-09-11

Fans of the zombie genre were prepared for the shocks but not the yucks of "Dawn of the Living Dead." The movie grips you with horror scenes non pareil then has you grinning with clever bon mots. It's especially useful as the centerpiece of upcoming Halloween parties and could spark a costume theme for revelers. I'll be watching for more from executive producers Barry Strudwick and Whit Hauprich.

    4 out of 5 stars good times.......2007-09-07

a cheesy zombie flick in an unusual setting. So bad it's good, a great time for horror lovers or those who are new to the horror-camp genre (like me)

4 out of 5 stars David Heavener tops.......2007-09-07

Heavener fans are an obscure but important sub-culture. Heavener is great because he takes actors we all know and casts them in the most bizarre movies. Who would think that Karen Black, Jim Brown, Sam Bottoms, Samantha Eggar, Margot Kidder or Richard Moll could be campy-camp? In DotLD, he goes for Todd Bridges and Emilio Estevez, and it is way over the top in typical Heavener fashion. Consume mass quantities and watch late at night.

...and the lines are great - "Hey, you sexy burritos..."

    5 out of 5 stars Total camp.......2007-09-06

This movie is hysterical- completely unintentionally as far as I can tell but it's so great. Watch with some bud(s) for a really great experience! Definitely high in gore factor but not so much so that you won't be able to sleep...

A great campy horror movie- think killer tomatoes.
