MEXICANS DON'T KNOW HOW TO END A FILM.......2007-01-01
unfortunately this happens time and time again: mexican filmmakers hook you with an interesting premise, but then they don;t know where to go with it. The acting is good (Federico Luppi, the argeninian mel gibson as he takes a severe beating in every one of his films), but as we reach the end of the film, we are left hanging without a conclusion. Art? No; Fart. Rent it if you feel like wasting a few hours.
Ok but not great.......2006-09-11
This is a decent horror movie, but not among the best of the genre. On the positive side:
+ General craft is on the high end
+ Direction is almost top notch
+ Federico Luppi really delivers (as usual).
On the negative side:
- While the story is not uninteresting, the starting point is implausible and the development not very logical.
- The little girl character does not work.
Interestingly, this movie is bilingual (English and Spanish).
Guilermo Del Toro's trailblazing entry intro the horror genre........2006-08-14
Cronos (1992) A vampire film without vampires? It's the story of Jesus Gris, a kindly antiquarian who comes across a mysterious ancient scarab which grants renewed vigor and immortality to its owner, but all at a deadly price. Sensual in its overtones, sincerely moving and highly surreal, this is one of the most underrated horror films of the 1990's.
Complete rubbish.......2006-06-01
Bad acting, predictable story, slow pace, nothing remotely horrifying or scary, not even its vaunted "atmosphere". This is third-rate and not worth your time, much less your money. Skip it.
All The Time In The World.......2006-04-14
It's said that there's no original stories, that it's all in the telling. Give Guillermo del Toro (better known these days as the director of "Hellboy") credit for a fresh spin on the vampire legend in "Cronos", his first feature film.
This version focuses on the Cronos device, a gadget that looks like a cross between a Faberge egg and a scorpion. Created by an alchemist five hundred years ago, it falls into the hands of Jesus, an antique dealer. Much of the plot deals with Jesus and his wealthy adversary Dieter de la Guardia, who, because he is dying, wants the device for himself. He browbeats his son Angel (Ron Perlman) into procuring archangel statues - the object that originally concealed the ancient mechanism - from all over the world. Jesus manages to hide the device before Angel can find it.
Unfortunately, while examing his discovery, Jesus unwittingly activates it. While the Cronos device brings everlasting life (barring the traditional heart impalement), it comes at an even worse price than usual. No suave Bela Lugosi types in this movie!
There are some flaws in the story. Little is made of the device's rejeuvenating effects - the descent to vampirism begins almost immediately, weakening the sense of a Faustian bargain. Though much is made of an instructional tome, Jesus and the inventor seemed to have suffered equally from the device, even though we assume the latter used it 'properly'.
The pacing and tone, though, are strong, and the relationship between Jesus and his daughter Aurora (the central bond in the film) is well-developed and sympathetic. The special effects are simple, but work well to help the narrative along. It's an interesting first effort, well worth checking out if you're curious about the director's early work. There's some creepy scenes that'll certainly stay with you.

More More More!.......2005-11-12
The rest of this great series NEEDS to be released! It can't end after just 3 dvds, with so much more to be seen and revealed about Gandora, the Wolf's Crest, and the Hyribead!
Please complete this awesome series on dvd. It's everything "GoBots" should have been, and so much more.
Additionally, seeing this show at last has rekindled my enthusiasm for the classic, but vastly underappreciated toyline of Machine Robo. If you like diecast transforming robots, check this entire series out and you'll discover what you've been missing!
Thank you.
When ?.......2005-04-28
When can I get vol.4, 5, 6.. of this great ultra anime DVD !!!
I'm so tired since last vol.3 at June. 2004...

Customer Reviews:
A good 80's anime for fans of Transformers and mecha genres.......2006-05-29
Machine Robo was a the precursor to its US incarnation Gobots. The story centers around Price Rom and Princess Reina Stol and their robotic comrades Jet, Drill, and Jim. They traverse the galaxy in their quest to avenge the death of Rom's father Kirai, at the hands of the Gylander aliens lead by the mysterious Lord Gadess.
The fact that the DVD is not dubbed in English and has subtitles is a good thing. In many instances, western studios have failed to successfully dub 80's animes in a believable way. Often times, the dubbing studio uses voice actors who can't capture the spirit of the original Japanese VAs. However, the subbing also is not without its faults in translation. The biggest error being that Reina is referred to as "Leina" throughout the entire three volumes of the series.
During the action sequences the animation seems choppy and out of sync. But that is the quality to expect from mid-80s animation. The sequence in which Rom transforms into the larger Blade Dragon and Vikung-Fu robots is also somewhat repetitive. I am thoroughly grateful that this series was finally released in the West and hope someday that the remainder can be put on sale. In the meantime, there's always searching for the laserdisc editions.
I also see some influences that Japanese Transformer animes ended up using in Masterforce and Zone. For instance, Rom seems very similar to the human hero of Masterforce, Ginrai and Lord Gadess is somewhat reminiscent to the villain Violenjigger in the Transformers OVA, Zone.
Machine Robo vs. GoBots vs. Transformers.......2004-08-16
Okay wow, I never thought that I would find Machine Robo. It's never been released here in the United States, however I did rent this weekly through the Japanese rental stores in Japantown. So anyway, it was ironic that I could go into the stores and buy Machine Robo mecha toys under the brand name "GoBots". Yes this was the era that Transformers, GoBots, and Robotech dominated the airwaves. So what is Machine Robo? It's the actual anime that was made for the GoBot toys.
Ironically Cy-Kill is not a main character, and either is Leader-1. However, Jet and Drill are part of the main characters. They both speak and feel like Gobots, but definity this has more depth and story. The story takes place in a cybernetic world. Humans are actually droids and transforming Robots co-exist. The enemy actually is probably a different set of toys that never were released under GoBots brandname. But this is a low production television cartoon which took place during Macross or Voltron? hehe. So don't expect 3D graphics. Don't expect high quality japanese animation. Think back and expect Voltron or Shogun Warriors quality. But with the following of Robotech. I'm sure quality cannot replace the storyline or plots of these original Machine Robo classics.
The DVD is more or less subtitled, nothing more. The translations aren't as great as today's standards. You'll find words like "metal laster" in the second or third episode. Unforunately if you're Japanese you'll realize that the true translation is "metal luster" a oiled product that protects the robots from rust. Yes! The robots rust in this series. It's great! The DVD oddly also has sketches of Cy-Kill's mecha. They are exactly the same as the toy.
If you enjoy GoBots, Transformers, you'll love Machine Robo. Watch this DVD and watch the Machine Robo protect planet Cronos from the evil robots!
fantastic !!.......2004-02-28
I never forget this anime since i first seen this at 1987.
It is fantastic & powerful action anime of various machines.
I also satisfy display & sound q'lity of this DVD.
At many cases, disappointed code1 anime title (not incude japanese original sound, cutted, edited, changed credits..),
but it is perfect. I love it !! Of course, you should be keep in your mind it is came from 1986.
