Grizzly Man could easily have been sensational and exploitative, but in the hands of Werner Herzog, it becomes something extraordinary. Herzog was granted exclusive access to over 100 hours of video shot by amateur naturalist, wildlife advocate and troubled loner Timothy Treadwell, who spent 13 summers in Alaska's Katmai National Park, where he grew to know and love the grizzly bears that lived there. He was also killed by one of them, in October 2003, along with his girlfriend Amie Huguenard, and that seemingly inevitable fate informs every minute of Herzog's riveting combination of Treadwell's video with his own expert filmmaking and unique vision of nature and man. Whereas Treadwell was a naïve nature-lover and social outcast whose sanity was slowly slipping away, Herzog is a pragmatic mythologist who views nature primarily in terms of "chaos, hostility, and murder," and the disparity of their vision results in a magnetic attraction that makes the sum of Grizzly Man greater than its parts. We come to admire the dreamer, the idealist, the failed actor and recovered alcoholic man-child that was Treadwell, and we equally admire the seeker of truth and wisdom that is Herzog. They belong together, in some world beyond our world, where visionaries join forces to create life after death. --Jeff Shannon

Description

In his mesmerizing new film, GRIZZLY MAN, acclaimed director Werner Herzog explores the life and death of amateur grizzly bear expert and wildlife preservationist Timothy Treadwell. Treadwell lived unarmed among the bears for thirteen summers, and filmed his adventures in the wild during his final five seasons. In October 2003, Treadwell's remains, along with those of his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were discovered near their campsite in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Reserve. They had been mauled and devoured by a grizzly, the first known victims of a bear attack in the pa

2 out of 5 stars Not nearly as interesting as it would like to be.......2007-09-12

I can understand why Timothy Treadwell's story would appeal to any filmmaker. It has the right ingredients: a larger-than-life subject with personal demons and a mysterious off-screen death, deep in the wilderness. This should have been a slam dunk, Lawrence Of Arabia meets Gorillas In The Mist. Unfortunately, in sorting through hours and hours of Treadwell's footage, Werner Herzog struggles to say anything new or important.

Yes, this is more about Treadwell himself than the bears he studied, and no, it is not a nature documentary. But the story of a man feeling ill at ease in human circles, moving to the wilderness and slowly losing the plot is neither new nor compelling. Anyone alone in such a setting would start to exhibit irrational or even animalistic behavior. Herzog sensationalizes Treadwell as being "hell-bent on destruction", and his girfriend Amy Huguenard becomes a mythical figure simply because she is only visible in a few shots.

A far more valuable message to take away from this film, one largely ignored by Herzog, is that it is a mistake to ascribe human characteristics and identities to dangerous creatures we know nothing about. We do so at their peril as much as our own. Thirteen summers spent in the company of bears did not make Treadwell a qualified bear expert. He treated bears like people because he was lonely, possibly crazy, definitely wrong. He saw himself as an observer, and the bears saw him as an intrusion. Poking and prodding bear cubs from behind a camera made them more susceptible to poaching than anyone throwing rocks.

So the message illuminated by Herzog in the Treadwell footage, that we sometimes go a little crazy in solitude, is hardly groundbreaking documentary material. Then there are the interviews. Herzog talks to an assortment of people who knew (or, in the case of a bizarre coroner, seemed to think they knew) Treadwell best. It is unclear if these interviews were scripted, or done over multiple takes, or what. Maybe this is a Herzog thing, but they come off looking like a strange, surreal bunch of attention-starved people, performing for the camera.

4 out of 5 stars "I love that bee!".......2007-09-06

It's easy to sneer, I admit. Here's this fast-talking, ditsy Hollywood wannabee, capering around in the wilds of Alaska, foolishly risking his life out of a misplaced sense of kinship with dangerous wild animals. A Darwin Award winner, you might think, and on one level you'd be right.

But the sad thing is that there is really no place in our society for people like Timothy Treadwell to go, anymore. And it shows. Henry David Thoreau and John Muir may well have been reduced to spewing profanities at the U.S. Park Service, had they lived in the present. Sure, Treadwell got lost in over-identifying with the bears, with his cute names for them and everthing. Pure cathexis, concentrating emotional attachment onto a single, probably inappropriate object.

But he also achieved a cracklingly intense union with nature. Going ga-ga over bear scat, or a dead bee on a blossom, he truly saw "the world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower". However maladroit he may have been in human society, Treadwell nevertheless experienced nature with a joy and savor and depth that many a more conventional environmentalist could envy.

Of course he was never in a position to protect the bears. Indeed, being killed by one was a sure death sentence for the unfortunate mankiller--bears with a taste for human flesh could not be allowed to remain at large. In that respect Treadwell was unforgivably selfish. He should have known what would follow the event of his own death.

Director Werner Herzog mentions his own run-in with madness in the wilderness, alluding to the famous incident when he threatened to shoot Klaus Kinski during the filming of Aguirre, The Wrath Of God. He admires many of Treadwell's shots, for effects both intended and unintended, and see-saws between treating him as a crazy romantic, and a fellow cinematic artist.

The best thing about the film? The excellent folk-electric soundtrack by Richard Thompson is close to it. The rustic stylings of the ex-Fairport Convention guitarist suit the gorgeous natural setting to a T. The DVD has a nifty in-the-studio featurette with him, in the extras.

Animals can't tell you to buzz off and mind your own business, in so many words, which is why nature worship is so popular among busybodies nowadays. We are not all brothers under the fur. Some of nature's children are just plain old, unemployed, probably agnostic, wild beasts, into whom the lonelier of us project ourselves. On that account, Treadwell wasn't much different from the batty old maid with an apartment full of cats. But, for the transports of ecstasy he experienced in bear country, and filmed, and shared with thousands, he is someone whose memory will be long treasured. The gifted, sensitive filmmaker will be remembered, not the suicidal fool.

5 out of 5 stars Timothy Treadwell Hated Human Society.......2007-09-04

Werner Herzog's documentary is excellent. I thought it to be among the very best I've ever seen. "Grizzly Man" deals with the crazed Timothy Treadwell who was doomed to eventually get himself killed. The odds were against his ever reaching retirement age. Treadwell so hated the civilized world that he deluded himself into believing that wild animals had more love to offer than other human beings. Amie Huguenard and the other women in his life were probably mere sex objects. They were nowhere near as important as the grizzly bears. It is obvious as you watch the film that Treadwell is increasingly becoming more unbalanced. A group of men, for instance, visit his "private" island and are obviously non-threatening. And yet, Treadwell imagines them to be the very opposite. Some true believers (The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements (Perennial Classics)) seek their utopias in political systems such as Communism, Nazism or environmental radicalism. Treadwell instead opted for anthropomorphic extremism. This is a sure one-way ticket to madness and eventual suicide. Sadly, Amie did not recognize the danger signals. Experts believe that an older and perhaps desperately hungry bear saw them as an easy meal. There is one consolation regarding the deaths of Treadwell and Huguenard: they never murdered people on behalf of their utopian vision. Only these two individuals paid the ultimate price. For that, we can be thankful.

2 out of 5 stars Overrated. Invasion of privacy........2007-08-27

I turned off the movie with about 20 minutes left. Herzog uses
private material from Mr. Treadwell to do a layman's psychological
profile of him. This is an invasion of privacy and overall is deplorable. It's also twisted how he focuses a lot of time on the gruesome death and details, including the audio tape. If done with respect, this could have been an interesting, although more pedestrian documentary. Herzog goes for shock value and thru hype and violations of privacy exploits this unique individual.

2 out of 5 stars Please Don't Feed the Bears.......2007-07-26

I had high expectations of Grizzly Man as it made it to the big screen. I was quite disappointed. Grizzly Man fails as a wildlife documentary because Timothy Treadwell didn't have the qualifications or expertise to produce such a thing. Grizzly Man falls short as a biography because Mr. Treadwell was in no way great or inspiring. However, he was nuts. Those interested in seeing a self-deluded, poor man's Crocodile Hunter destroy himself may find some value in this film. Most people would probably find time tuned in to the Discovery Channel to be time better spent.

5 out of 5 stars Why this movie scared me .......2007-09-08

This was the one movie that actually scared me when I saw it at the theatre. I was 6 or 7 years old and accompanied by my younger brother and grandparents. I guess, besides the fact that I was just a kid, the reason it scared me was that my grandparents found it humorous to insist that all of what I was seeing on the screen was real. I believed it and really had trouble sleeping that night. All I could think of was a bear smashing the bedroom window to get at me. Anyway, I find it interesting that so many other people see the similarities to Jaws as far as the characters go, because, for a long time, I thought I was the only one. I am glad to have finally seen extras on this film. I always wondered whether the bear was real, which it is. I also like the way the Jaws plotline was followed by not showing the whole bear until late in the movie. My advice is to see this movie before you by it. Although I enjoyed it, others may have a different opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Grizzly.......2007-07-26

Great movie but you have to keep in mind it's a classic. The scary scenes weren't as high tech then as they are now. A must have for a movie collector.

4 out of 5 stars Blast from the past!.......2007-04-28

This film is a very good film. I remember seeing this film at a Drive-In (yes!..there are still a few around today) back when i was a kid. Most folks might see this film as a "Jaws" rip off, but, what isn't today..lol..however, i think that this film is truly one of a kind (until this becomes a remake..oh brother!). However, I highly recommend this film to anybody that is into the B-Movie horror gender. Highly Recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars This is a classic...........2007-04-22

This movie while being blasted as a Jaws-on-land ripoff was very successful when it was released in 1976 (made over $39 million on a budget of under $1 million). This is fun from start to finish. Lots of bear POV shots and plenty of gruesome deaths (some are a bit cheesy but that still works in this movie's favor). I have become a big nature attacks movie fan and this movie is a must own for fans of this genre. The recent release by Media Blasters/Shriek Show is top notch.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Adventure Film.......2007-02-16

I saw this movie when I was 15 years old in the only theater Bedford County ever had. Christopher George plays the role of Ranger Michael Kelly and Richard Jaeckel plays the role of Naturalist Arthur Scott. Kelly is ready for another big season at the local Natural Park. As the camp fills up all of a sudden people start showing up dead. First Kelly thinks that the people are dieing of natural causes. However, when Kelly and his fellow Rangers start investigating more they find out that the people are dieing because of a ****** ****. Enters Naturalist Arthur Scott who makes a living studying *****. What Scott fines is that this isn't just any ordinary ****, it's a ******* ****. What makes matters worst is that the Park Supervisor has open hunting season and that fills the park with regular hunters and hunters that are drunk. I would give this movie 8 Weasel Stars but when you throw in the beauty of the state park that makes gives this movie 10 stars. I also bought this movie from Amazon and I had no trouble with the video or the audio.

5 out of 5 stars The Search for Heaven.......2005-05-03

A wonderful documentary of real life near death experiences and their impact on how we might view life after death. This research all started years ago when medical doctors like Dr.Moody and Dr. Morse started to scientifically question what patients were telling them about their experience of leaving their body during a near death or death happening. Their patients stories are very moving. Phd Fred Wolf's information on quatuum physics and life after death is thought provoking. After seeing this movie I am feeling more comfortable with the subject of life after death and the change called death.

This video is very informative, it contains very good interviews, and some interesting footage. It stays on track and keeps you interested. After watching this video you will be open to the possibility of something very bizarre going on at Area 51, if you aren't already of course. I would recommend this video for anyone who has interest in Area 51, UFO's, or conspiracies in general.

4 out of 5 stars Area 51 real or fake.......2007-08-18

The video of "Secrets of UFOs: Area 51 Base" was well done with alot of information to support the video. There was alot of people who I have seen in previous videos like UFOs & Area 51: Secrets Of The Black World who said the excact same thing and must have taken the video clip from this one and used it in this video. This video is in the same series as Secrets of UFOs: Roswell UFO Crash and some of the information was the same. It was produced and made by the same company. Overall, I was happy with the video and thought it was a good review and summary of what I already have seen previously. It is a must for any UFO seeker.

5 out of 5 stars Very well done.......2007-03-11

This is short, about 50 min or so, but its to the point. With all the research I have been doing, its also on the mark. This comes off as serious and informative as well. At such a low cost, it well worth it to buy. I highly recommend this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Good family entertainment..........2007-05-15

This movie would definitely not be recommended for any academy awards--and that's why I give it only 4 stars. But, this is good family entertainment, especially if you have young kids. It's a kind of adventure that children fantasize about. Even though the acting wasn't top notch, the story was fun, and I believe it is a good movie to watch if you have elementary school age children. There's a decent message in good old fashioned childrens adventure story.

1 out of 5 stars mountain "pristine," not "grizzly" at all.......2005-05-29

This movie is in no way related to Grizzly Adams. My family and I were greatly disappointed. A mere three billion thumbs up.

1 out of 5 stars The scenery's the star of this lousy film.......2001-03-13

I never thought Dan Haggerty could act . . . now I know for sure! And he was the best on in the entire cast of so-called actors.

Sure the story has a politically correct message, but the challenge is sticking with it to the end. This poorly written, poorly acted, low budget affair would have been a total waste of time except for some great scenery. Save your money.

1 out of 5 stars Stupid movie that made no sense!.......1999-08-17

Dan Haggerty was the best actor in that movie and did a good job acting in it. On the other hand it was poorly written and the rest of the actors and actresses in the movie did a terrible job. It made no sense at all. Some lousy acting kids got mysteriously sent back in time to save a mountain from being blown into pieces. It's funny how the kids were trying to save the mountain from being blown when it already existed in the 20th century. Then the writer made a lousy attempt to make the movie funny by making the kids have all sorts of gadgets and gizmos from the future. It could have been a great movie with Dan Haggerty since I thought some of his earlier movies were great, but the plot was terrible and the "kids from the future" made it even worse.

    3 out of 5 stars A well-acted family movie........1999-07-18

In this movie (very similar, in atmosphere and personality, to GRIZZLY ADAMS), two modern-day Oregon children are transported back to 1870 via a cave while on a camping trip. There, they help a mountain man named Jeremiah save the mountain from a greedy businessman and his cohorts. The children are compelled to help Jeremiah, because if the mountain is destroyed, so is their hope of returning to the 1990s. The character of Jeremiah is very much like Grizzly Adams: likable and well able to take care of himself in the mountains. The children are well able to handle themselves, and in their efforts to do so, they sometimes try Jeremiah's patience. All in all, it's a good movie. In a way, it's a politically correct movie: the theme is that it's wrong to develop mountains or any other wild areas for business purposes. Political correctness aside, I give this movie a thumbs-up for family quality. And but for one swear word, used once, I would rate it G.

5 out of 5 stars The Shroud of Turin - DVD.......2007-08-13

I remember in my senior class being told by my Chemistry teacher that "you can't put God in a test tube." I still liked my Chem teacher. He was a cool guy.
Anyway, for those who want an evaluation of physical evidence for the resurrection, this is where the scientists, both pro and con, have been given their wish---a chance to put God in a test tube so to speak.
When I first heard of the shroud of Turin thirty years ago, I dismissed it as not genuine, because my understanding was that there was a face cloth along with the grave clothes. This documentary gives a clear discription of the face cloth as well, which has a pattern of blood splotches on it that match ones found on the main shroud. This relic is presently being kept in Spain.
Unfortunately, because the Roman Catholic church has both these cloths in their possession, it stands to reason that many Protestants will dismiss this physical evidence out of hand. This, I feel, is a mistake. Even though I am a conservative Baptist, I do believe the Catholic Church has done a service to the world by protecting these relics. There is no doubt in my mind that they are genuine, even though the radiocarbon date does not support the shroud's authenticity.
I would caution those who take the radio carbon date of the shroud seriously to keep something in mind; the shroud went through a fire in 1532 and was even burnt through in several places. It is hard to imagine how this would not adversely affect the shroud's carbon content and throw off the radioactive carbon date.
One must be careful how much faith is put into this dating method, especially when different tissue samples from the same mammoth have been radioactive carbon dated at more than 2,000 years apart.
I would encourage those who are open-minded to sound, scientific evidence to get this DVD. I believe the Almighty has allowed this physical evidence to be preserved for examination by this highly scientific and sketical age---evidence which could not be as thoroughly examined until the advent of today's highly sophisticated scientific equipment.

    5 out of 5 stars Controversial arguments.......2007-07-03

As an evangelical christian I do not worship or pay any particular respect to medals, relics or even paintings of any kind, but the scientifical arguments in favor of the resurrection of Christ in this documentary are worth to be studied by Pastors and theologians. If you are not involved in the academic christian field I have to warn you not to view this DVD alone but in the company of your pastor or the person encharged of your discipleship. We must defend the resurrection of Christ at all cost from the agnostic, communist, socialist and scientifical arguments of today.

5 out of 5 stars You must grotesquely lie to yourself to deny the Resurrection after watching this.......2007-07-01

This documentary is astounding. Until early May 2007, I was a non-believer. I had been researching the Shroud after seeing links on rense.com and earthfiles.com, and finally it hit me: the Resurrection being true is the logical conclusion of the evidence. The Fabric of Time reinforced this belief again, and reiterated a couple of facts I missed from the book and online research. I chose to begin following Jesus Christ in late May, after accepting that what He claimed was and is true. It is incomprehensible to me how any honest and reasonably objective person could view this film and not come to the same conclusion I did...that is, unless they want, desperately, to lie to themselves, to hold on to whatever reason that buttresses their disbelief. And it would require incredible twists of the evidence and contortions of logic to avoid the conclusion that the Resurrection was fact, that the Shroud was made in a "miraculous" fashion (that is, made using a technology that only God understands).

5 out of 5 stars Positively Unique .......2007-06-19

There is nothing like the shroud of turin on this planet . With all of our present technology we can not reproduce it. The shroud is the proof of the Resurrection OF JESUS and the LOVE OF GOD, or the most unbelievable forgery ever produced. After watching The Fabric of Time and seeing the three dimensional image of the Shroud and that the image is undistorted and does not penetrate the weave, all I can say is that we did not make the Shroud. In closing I would like to say Forgive me Almighty TRINITY for I'am just a STUPID MAN.

1 out of 5 stars Promises much - Delivers Little.......2007-05-23

I was extremely disappointed by this DVD. Apart from the 3-D gimmick which does NOT work, there is nothing really new here. A better buy with much more info is Mark Antonacci's excellent book from 2000 - "The Resurrection of the Shroud." This DVD is constantly promising to reveal the very secrets of the Universe by tying quantum theory into the Shroud....and never really does! I couldn't believe how abruptly the DVD ended! We still do not know if the basic premise of the DVD (that the image is holographic) is true or not. And astronaut Edgar Mitchell and physicist Alan Wolfe are tossed into the mix - not as Shroud proponants (which they NEVER even mention in their segments) but simply because they make the roster of interviewees more impressive. The ONLY thing truly new here is that the samples taken for the Carbon-14 dating were perhaps taken from a mended portion of the cloth: THIS, if truly true, is what the documentary SHOULD have focussed on at greater length....and not the dangling of carrots of ultimate answers before us to lead us, ultmately, nowhere! Ian Wilson's books about the Shroud are also much more preferable than this flop.

    Description

For decades, mankind has witnessed the mystery of crop circles the often beautiful but always baffling markings that appear in fields the world over. Previously dismissed by skeptics as the work of clever hoaxers, crop circles are now the focus of increasing scientific investigation. How can complicated crop circle designs appear in just minutes, often in complete darkness? Why does the crop undergo changes at the cellular level? What about the strange lights which appear over the fields where crop circles are found? Are crop circles the product of new military technology?

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars impressive.......2007-07-20

I loved it, full of info, and great footage. If you are not familiar with the crop circle phenomena, this is a great way to start, before you get any other dvd with more talk and less footage. enjoy, grab it, get familiar with the subject and you are ready to see other dvds on the subject.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding documentary.......2006-07-29

If you are interested in the phenomena of Crop Circles, this DVD is a great place to start. This documentary examines all the terrestrial explanations including plasma vortices, hoaxers, etc. Each is, in turn, dismissed as inadequate. The very important distinctions between hoaxed and genuine circles is examined at some length. And then there is the Dave and Doug story. In 1991 these two pubmates convinced the mass media that they were behind the mystery in the fields. The question, of course, is why did the media pounce on them? And the answer is because they were the first and only down to Earth explanation; hence, mystery solved. But the real hoax perpetrated by Doug and Dave was on the media itself which with thoroughgoing gullability accepted their version of events and declared an end to the story. Henceforth the news could dismiss the story. But despite the mass media's long standing disinterest, the story goes on and the mystery deepens as the evidence accumulates and the studies intensify. The bottom line is that either there is a "natural" terrestrial cause for the crop circle, or there isn't. And if there isn't, then that opens up a new can of worms that most people would rather not peer into.

A number of experts, including the well-known Colin Andrews and Michael Glickman, are interviewed and each adds an informed perspective on the complex puzzle that are now referred to as "agriglyphs." For instance, Dr. Nick Kollerstrom, a Fellow at the Royal Astronomical Society, uses the complex designs of crop circles to teach a "holistic geometry...that shows us a different experience of mathematics..." Indeed, new conceptions of math and physics seems to result from the study of these cereal pictograms, especially, as Dr. Kollerstrom notes, "in the past 12 years" when the complexity and progressive themes of the formations provide a window into new areas of mathematical study. New geometric theorems and correlaries have been deduced from the study of the abstract configurations of the circles. Despite this, the media continues to persist in its obstinant refusal to acknowledge the investigations that mathematicians, physicists, botanists and other researchers have been conducting for at least the past 15 years.

In sum, this DVD is a fascinating account of a phenomena that refuses to go away, and seems to point to only one conclusion - that an intelligence greater than our own is behind these curious and sublime marvels.

As the disclaimer states, this movie may feature Grizzly Adams himself, Dan Haggerty, but it's not about Grizzly Adams. Instead, it's a charming story of a boy moved by the plight of an abused cub kept by an unscrupulous circus. From a Native American trainer troubled by his own collaboration with the enemy, the boy learns of a mystical cave where "the pure of heart" can travel back to a simpler past. He aims to free the bear into the 1841 wilderness, but the cub escapes his leash and the boy meets Haggerty's mountain man alone. Of course, Haggerty agrees to come to the future to set things right. Ninety minutes later, after many scraps with circus villains, the law, and a neighborhood bully, all is well with the good guys, both human and ursine. While the story is a bit cloying at times, it's also funny, good-intentioned family viewing for ages 5 and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Where is that magical cave? I'd sure like to find it. Lo, the Native Americans were breathtaking. A good and proper movie for the whole family to watch. Children of today need to watch Grizzly Adams movies.

    2 out of 5 stars sappy movie.......2004-07-01

5 out of 5 stars Return to Grizzly Mountain.......2002-08-22

It was a wonderful movie that went back in time to the days of the pioneers were a bear cub could run free and be safe. The scenery was spectacular and majestic and I would reccommeen it to anyone especially a family. The actors were all wonderful and they did a good job. The ending is left open for two sequels going either direction. I am looking forward to future movies from the prodcers.
PS thanks for the wonderful movie. Thank you amazon.com for your couteous services.

5 out of 5 stars Times have changed, the heart remains unchanged.......2002-02-26

A mountain man and modern boy are drawn together through a very special cave linking the present with 1841.

Dan Haggerty, who is best know for the 1970's series The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, stars in this movie. Though the beginning credits clearly state that this is an original production, and is in no way related to the Grizzly Adams series, you will find many similarities. I rather enjoyed that however.

The Mountain Man lives in a secluded cabin in 1841 in peace with nature and the natives on the vast open land of the Pacific Northwest. The boy lives in harried modern times with his older sister after their parents were killed by drunk drivers-(this is only mentioned not shown).

As bullies pick on Jimmy (the boy) they invite him along to the traveling circus where Jimmy finds a very young bear being mistreated and a friendly caregiver amongst the other cruel circus folk.

Through trial and error, bravery and determination this bear cub will have a peaceful and free life. How does he free the bear? What happens at the cave? Who helps him? Well, I'm not going to give it all away! Watch and see....

The time travel through the cave is done in a pleasant fashion and this is a great movie for the whole family. This left a solid vision in the minds of my little ones about caring for God's creatures.

I was very pleased to see Dan Haggerty reprise his mountain man role and I look forward to other productions with him in it.

This would make a great gift and you can feel good about giving it.

4 out of 5 stars Escape to Grizzly Mountain.......2002-02-25

Great family entertainment! The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the "bad guys" were too exaggerated and silly. It is a warm story with justice and right values portrayed in a way that isn't pushy. A good time.

    5 out of 5 stars very beautiful.......2006-03-17

I watched two Alaska videos this week. The first one is not impressive, and it seems to be produced in 1 week. The second one (the one I am reviewing) is from PBS, it is excellent. It does not only have beautiful scenes, but have a lot of parts about animals. It covers the four seasons of Denali. PBS did spend a lot of effort to take this video. I am very impressed.

Grizzly Falls is a gorgeous, hopelessly old-fashioned film that's unlikely to attract the viewership it ought to--none of the characters is particularly witty or clever; special effects, save a few stunts with a bear, are nil; and the irony level is at an all-time low. In other words, prying the kids away from Pokémon to watch this movie may be a challenge, but it's worth the effort. Daniel Clark plays Harry, a lad of around 8 who accompanies Tyrone (Bryan Brown), his thrill-seeking dad, on a mission to the Colorado Rockies, where he intends to be the first to capture a live grizzly. It's the early 1900s, so the means by which Tyrone plans to snare the beast aren't especially humane--at a saloon stop, he hires five tough guys, one with a team of hounds. Then the hunt begins. The hounds' punishing master quickly emerges as a villain; when he and two dogs are mauled by the grizzly, he exacts revenge by caging the bear's cubs. She, in classic righteous-mother mode, retaliates by dragging Harry into the woods. What follows is a desperate chase through beautiful countryside by tireless Tyrone and the blossoming of an impossible boy-bear friendship. Mizzy, as Harry comes to call the bear, protects him from dangers of the wild while leading the boy to her caged cubs, who are traveling east with the ornery houndskeeper. There's a showdown when the animal family is reunited, but Harry and Tyrone extinguish a series of confrontations handily, then move on to cement their own iffy relationship. The surplus of action scenes in this PG-rated movie will wow kids 8 and up, and only jaded viewers will summon the callousness to crack wise about its unapologetic portrayal of blind loyalty and courage at all costs. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars A great movie for all ages!.......2002-04-17

It's a great tale about a young boy who becomes a friendly hostage of a grizzly bear while on a bear hunting expedition with his father in the northwest. Things go awry and the boy is taken by the bear only to be chased by his father and his team of men. The rugged adventure is only the beginning of this entertaining and relationship bonding movie between man and animal. It's perfect for all ages. Kids can watch it as the movie offers good moral values without hard language or adult situations.

    5 out of 5 stars A wholesome family movie........2000-09-03

We rented this movie two nights ago, and our whole family thoroughly enjoyed it. It is the story of a boy and his father who go on an expedition in the Rocky Mountains, to catch a grizzly bear and bring it back alive. Along the way, the boy gets separated from his father and ends up with a momma grizzly bear who has taken a liking to him. She takes care of him as they journey together to find her cubs. During this time, the father is on a desperate hunt to find his son. The scenery is beautiful, the animals are wonderful, and the entire movie is excellently produced. The father and son learn a lot about what love and respect for nature really means. I was impressed with this movie. It is rated PG for what they called "nature violence", which is some animal attacks on other animals, and one time where the grizzly attacks one of the men in the hunting party. This may scare small children, but my son is 7 1/2 and he loved it. He was so interested in the story, that he didn't talk all the way through it, he just watched as amazed as I was. I also didn't hear a foul word in the whole movie. There may be a "damn" in there somewhere, but I didn't catch it. I never saw this movie come out in the theaters, but it sure is worth renting. I would recommend it to any family with school age and above. My husband and I liked it just as much as our son. We give it an A+.
