There is something about this truely creepy film that I love. Maybe alot of things. It has a great cast of believable actors, cool slimey zombies, great sets[the hotel] Excellent directing / cinemat. An excellent storyline A DARN creepy soundtrack. All in all I'd have to say it is a very believable horror story. I might as well just stop here because I WILL ramble on forever! This is a "sleeper" type of film but prob. the best I've ever seen, and I've probably seen it 100 times. 2 vhs and 1 dvd version. You may want to rent first but you may come back to buy it. Hey, I could watch it right know!

3 out of 5 stars The Moral Of The Story: Don't Fire A Flare Gun In A Refrigerator.......2007-02-24

"Shock Waves" has been proclaimed "the best of the Nazi zombie movies" and bears that ringing endorsement on the DVD cover. I am inclined to agree. Although I am not normally an enormous fan of the zombie genre, the presence of both John Carradine and Peter Cushing was enough to persuade me to watch it, and I found it more enjoyable that I expected. I am a Carradine completist ever since seeing his enticing performance in "Red Zone Cuba," and true to form, John lives up to his cranky reputation here.

The movie opens with some sailors recovering an insane woman in a rowboat from the open sea; the remainder of the film is told in a flashback. The body of the story commences with Captain John Carradine berating a sailor about the importance of accurate navigation on the open sea. I should mention that John looks even more like the grim specter of death warmed over than usual here, and has an unsightly beard-like protuberance on his jaw that makes him look decidedly unsavory. His boat is a leisure craft (think "Gilligan's Island" without the sophistication) with a few passengers including a used car salesman so annoying that you will be very eager for his encounter with the aqua-Nazis. The boat first encounters a strange yellow light and then collides with a ghost ship while under the guidance of the First Mate. The boat grounds out near and island and the occupants of the boat go ashore in a glass-bottomed rowboat (how often do you see one of those?) to look for John Carradine, who has vanished. He stays on the MIA list a very brief time when we see him float under the boat dead as a stump.

After finding an old hotel (actually a Biltmore hotel in Florida, then abandoned, but now rebuilt) once ashore, the boat occupants meet superstar number two, Peter Cushing, who like John Carradine was paid $5,000 for four days of work. Cushing explains in his creepy German accent that he was the head of a secret underwater Nazi zombie project during World War Two, and the zombies have returned. The movie is slow to start, as it is halfway over before the first zombies arrive, but when they do they are unexpectedly creepy. The scenes where they emerge from the water are very effective, and the last half of the film works quite well as a horror picture. Although the Nazis do have a weakness (they die if their goggles are removed,) this is only used against them a few times, strangely.

The psychological effects of being pursued (like "The Most Dangerous Game" on steroids) rend the group and fracture their cohesiveness, ultimately sealing their fate one by one. It turns out that you don't want to be in a walk-in refrigerator when a flare goes off inside it: it will drive you into the waiting arms of aqua-Nazis. Ultimately two survivors (including the insane woman recalling the story) escape, but trouble once again awaits in a genuinely creepy scene once again involving the glass-bottomed boat.

I think the film is quite good for the genre, although more screen time from Carradine and Cushing would have been welcome (and it would have been better yet if they had scenes together.) The film drags in some places, is implausible in others, and has a couple of continuity errors, but overall it will definitely please zombie and horror movie fans.

The DVD includes several extras including commentary track with Director Ken Wiederhorn and legendary B-filmmaker Fred Olen Ray, a television spot, and the original theater trailer that announces "You are in the deep end of horror!," and "The faster you run, the quicker you die!" I give it three stars overall; the reduction stems from the limited screen exposure of the two stars, and the relatively slow start and pacing in the first half of the film.

5 out of 5 stars Nazis!!! Zombies!!! Nazi Zombies!!! UNDERWATER NAZI ZOMBIES!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-01

Saw the trailer for this as a sophomore in high school, circa 1977. The second I saw the begoggled undead shock troops emerge from the ocean I was hooked - SHOCK WAVES has gone on to be my favorite low-budget film of all time, and I've seen a-plenty. No cannibalism here, no gore, no entrails - just bizarre, creepy atmosphere to burn and the claustrophic paranoia that is at the very heart of this classic Florida-shot mood piece. And if that ain't enough, you also have John Carradine, Peter Cushing, Luke Halpin (all grown up from his "Flipper" days) and the excellent Brooke Adams, who wears a bathing suit better than anyone since Julie Adams (no relation as far as I know) in CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. Blue Underground has done an excellent job with this package. In addition to enlightening, entertaining commentary from director/co-writer Ken Wiederhorn, filmmaker/photographer Fred Olen Ray and make-up designer Alan Ormsby, there is a wealth of advert media: original trailer, a Luke Halpin interview, TV and radio spots and a gallery of stills and newspaper ads for double feature and drive-in showings. To have this in your library is to have a bona-fide minimalist cult classic. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!

...Another very good 1. The fight card is tight...with surprises as usual. Pride fighters are the best on the planet...most MMA fans would agree. Another exciting DVD...get it!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Pride shows.......2007-07-30

Topping the card is Fedor vs Minotauro, which is fun to watch how Fedor dominates. The feature is Mark Hunt v Wanderlei, which is wonderful and has a surprise ending. There's also Gomi v Pulver, which is the best fight on the card. There are no bad fights on the card, and this is a top-five Pride Card.

5 out of 5 stars Lottsa Action.......2007-06-21

Great way to get your feet wet, with the Pride organization.
Great show, and some of the best fighters in the world.
If you are a mma fan, this dvd will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Another stellar Shockwave..........2007-06-06

Pride FC: Shockwave 2004 is another stellar card. None of the matches disappoint. Taka Gomi vs. Pulver is an awesome slugfest. Anderson Silva always amazes. The highlight for me was the Hunt/W.Silva fight. Worth the price of the DVD alone.

This is another must have for those who are unfamiliar with the Pride Organization.

5 out of 5 stars monster card.......2007-03-29

This card is one of the best Pride cards ever. There are few if any moments of real weakness in this Shockwave event.Say what you will about DSE, but they promoted top quality cards. If you like real MMA, this DVD will keep your attention.
You have amateur wrestling legend Rulon Gardner battling Japanese hero and world champion Judoka Hidehiko Yoshida,a wild scrap between Fireball Kid Takanori Gomi and former UFC lightweight powerhouse Jens Pulver, and current UFC champ Anderson Silva falls victim to one of the wildest submissions in the brief history of MMA.The final fight of the night is the rematch between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and "The Man",Fedor Emelianenko. Like their first fight at Pride 25, Fedor pretty much takes Nog down and pounds hell out of him. Not a great fight per se, but a great display of skill from Fedor and a great display of guts from Big Nog.However, the real jewel in this crown is the war between the demonic middleweight champion, Wanderlei Silva, and the giant K-1 Grand Prix champ-turned MMA fighter, Mark Hunt. The fight lasts 20 minutes, but you won't lose interest for a second. If you like MMA, get this!!!

5 out of 5 stars Six Stars.......2007-02-09

I saw Tears for Fears twice in Vancouver in the early 80's. They are one of the best bands ever. Their intelligent lyrics, catchy tunes and dry humor make them (Curt and Roland) a fabulous duo. I first got this on VHS from my brother in law for Christmas in 1984. To this day I still have this VHS tape even though I do not have a player. When I found out it had been released on DVD I bought it right away. This brings back so many great memories of my years before I joined the military. All the greatest hits and videos are here along with interviews and several live performances. Extras include a live show gallery as well as other videos. If you only buy one music DVD this is the one to get.

4 out of 5 stars When Will We Get A Watchable Concert Video From Them.......2006-04-07

This is one of my favorite bands. I had the Scenes from the big chair on VHS and I'm glad to see it got the DVD treatment. Very interesting and informative video of the bands early years with videos and concert footage thrown in.

The Going to California concert is another story. Just like the In my minds eye concert, this too is almost unwatchable. With Minds eye it was like the editor just got a new video effects machine and wanted to use every single effect on it. With this concert, once again we are subject to constant video effects, switching from color to black and white. Then to grainy footage again in both color and black and white with grainy video footage thrown in. You really can't enjoy the show with the video constantly changing all the time.

4 out of 5 stars Back To the Future!.......2005-10-05

This is a single disc DVD highlighting the terrific album "Songs From the Big Chair". The DVD has a very nice documentary about the making of the album. There are interviews with founding members Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal, and the influential duo of Ian Stanley (keyboards) and Manny Elias (drums) as well. The interviews really help to fleshen out the album and brings the making and history of the album, songs and videos to life.

What really makes the documentary (and the DVD) is the live concert footage of the band in 1985 during their tour of Canada and Germany. The live footage has the band performing "Shout", "Broken (Reprise)", "Memories Fade", "Hurting", "Working Hour" and "Everybody Wants To Rule The World". Seeing the band perform these songs live right as they where becoming international stars is the highlight of this DVD. They were an extremely tight and professional band and it came across in their live shows.
The videos of "Broken", "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", "Listen", "Head Over Heels", "Mothers Talk" and "I Believe" are shown as well.

The one drawback of the DVD which keeps me from giving it a 5 star rating is the 1990 concert from California. The concert has the band touring for their latest album "Sowing The Seeds Of Love". The band and the show in itself is fantastic, BUUUUT for some unknown reason the band decided to go "artistic" and use black and white with color interspersed. This makes watching the concert VERY aggravating and a chore! This poor choice to use black and white and then to swith to color and then back to black and white every few seconds brings down the viewing experience. Just close your eyes and listen to the concert instead.

Overall, this documentary of Tears For Fears is very well done and the live concert from 1985 is a real treat! I recommend buying the DVD for the documentary. The price is real steep, but if you love Tears for Fears and want to see the original band live during the "Songs From The Big Chair" tour, buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Great video companion to classic album.......2005-08-28

There are some albums that come along once in a while and just seem to capture the spirit of the time they were produced in, and yet remain timeless. Tears For Fears' "Songs From The Big Chair" is one of those albums, and the band will probably be best known for this release.

"Scenes From The Big Chair" is the perfect video companion to that album. This 1985 documentary on the making and impact of "Songs From The Big Chair" has been spiffed up for DVD and reissued along with "Going To California", the band's second live concert video that was originally released in 1990.

The documentary catches up with the band on the road for 1985's Big Chair tour, and has Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal talking about how they came together with the other musicians to record the album. It also features the MTV-friendly videos for hits like "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", "Shout", "Head Over Heels" and live performances of "The Working Hour", "Everybody Wants..." and "Memories Fade" from a concert at Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada.

"Going To California" catches the band at two different concerts in Californiawhile on the road to promote "The Seeds Of Love" album. The band backing Smith and Orzabal is smoking and includes Oleta Adams on piano and vocals. (She even gets a solo turn on the song "I've Got To Sing My Song".)

The set list includes the best from the three albums that Tears For Fears had released till then and there are great versions of "Head Over Heels", "Pale Shelter", "Woman In Chains", "Everybody Wants..." and even a cover of the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love".

The video and audio quality? Well, the video on "Scenes..." is soft, lacks contrast and just about does the job. The sound has been upgarded to Dolby 5.1 but remains limited to the front speakers and is rather dull.

The concert, however, is a different kettle of fish, and sounds like something recorded more recently. There is considerable use of the surrounds, and the sound is clean and airy, with nice bottom end for the sub-woofer. And it is loud!!!! The video for the concert segment too is cleaner though there is a lot of grainy footage used for a dramatic effect.

Strangely, both concert and documentary are full screen but a new interview with album producer Chris Hughes that is included as a special feature comes in anamorphic widescreen.

Definitely one for fans of TFF and "Songs From The Big Chair".

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT DVD FROM TEARS FOR FEARS.......2005-08-24

1. Excellent story from the album Songs from the Big Chair, (1985).
2. Beautiful and peaceful concert of Tears for Fears Going to California, (1989).
3. Brilliant interview with Chris Hughes, (2005).

Good picture, great sound, all in one DVD!!!. Now I Believe that when you think is all over..., its not over!!!.

5 out of 5 stars Quality < Ambition.......2005-03-24

Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW) prides itself as the number-one independent promotion in the country. As such, they were very excited to produce six DVD releases. The first two (Future Shock, vol. 1 & 2) saw its stars face established wrestlers. The remaining four were special events between August 2002 and January 2003.

The sound and picture quality is very raw but extremely ambitious (not unlike the independent circuits themselves). If you enjoy indy wrestling, then you already should value effort over the spectacle itself. The commentary team is Todd Keneley and Lucky; the more I hear them, the more I enjoy them.

The first matches of "Shockwave" are by far the best, and enhanced by Samoa Joe joining Todd Keneley and Lucky on commentary. In fact the second match is heralded as "one of the greatest matches in UPW! Three superstars take each other to the limit in a high-flying, hard-hitting epic in which two prestigious titles are on the line." Great match amongst UPW Lighweight champion B-Boy versus Zero-ONE Int'l Jr. Heavyweight champion Brian "Spanky" Kendrick versus Frankie "The Future" Kazarian.

Rowdy Roddy Piper hosted a classic rendition of the Piper's Pit, "classic" meaning one where he has a remote idea of what he's talking about. He discussed the likes of Lord Alfred Hayes, Ric Flair, Andre the Giant, Goldust, and a bear named Victor ("as if he needed a name").

Pro Wrestling IRON's Donovan Morgan and Mike Modest waged a war against Havana Pitbulls (Ricky Reyes and Rocky Romero) of top-notch tag team action.

In the main event, Tom Howard extended a challenge to the man who attacked the Hardcore Kidd (his scheduled challenger). Despite the booking shuffle, the match was worthy of its "main event" status.

BONUS MATCHES

The bonus matches relive Spanky's quest for the Zero-ONE Int'l Jr. Heavyweight championship. First, Spanky met Frankie Kazarian with a crowd that defines the independent wrestling scene. In a separate feature, there is an extensive interview with Spanky regarding how that match came about, leading to the next match. Thank UPW for separating the lead-in from the second match itself, because it is very entertaining but not anything you need to hear every time you want to watch the match.

That second match is Spanky against UPW staple Smelly from Star Lanes in Japan ("Lanes" as in a bowling alley). In keeping with Japan tradition, the crowd is supportive throughout the match, and UPW provides its own commentary with Todd Keneley and Spanky himself; very amusing!

Description

Beneath the living, beyond the dead, they rose from the depths of hell's ocean! In the dark days of World War II, the Nazi High Command ordered its scientists to create the Death Corps, a top secret race of indestructible zombie storm troopers--un-living, unfeeling, unstoppable monstrosities able to kill with their bare hands. No member of this horrific SS unit was ever captured by the Allied forces--and somewhere off the coast of Florida, they have survived. Peter Cushing (The Curse of Frankenstein), Brooke Adams (The Dead Zone), and John Carradine (The Howling) star in this suspenseful and genuinely creepy shocker co-written and directed by Ken Wiederhorn (Return of the Living Dead 2). One of the great horror "sleepers" of the '70s, "Shock Waves" has now been transferred from the director's own vault print and digitally restored for this premiere DVD release!

2 out of 5 stars not so scary.......2007-05-18

I'm a big fan of 70th horror movies but this one is not so interesting.
There is not one drop of blood, all victims die drowend, and the zombies aren't very scary.
On the good side we have Brooke Adams in bikini, Peter Cushing speaking german and John Carradine (only some time - he dies first).

5 out of 5 stars My all time favorite! Why? Many reasons!.......2007-03-09
