Customer Reviews:
Clare Kramer lifts this one.......2007-05-25
I bought this one only because I saw gravedancers and I thought Clare Kramer was good in that. I did not see the second Skulls movie, but I thought the first one was okay. (not great - just okay). This was a decent movie if you want to kill a couple hours. It is pretty predictable and the resolution is obvious early on, but it is fairly entertaining. Clare (who is in virtually the entire movie) does a good job carrying the film, although for all her character's struggles with conscience and the tragedies that have led her to this point, I thought she was kind of shallow when she got what she wanted. She was also a bit unbelievable as the most competent of the pledges trying to make it into the Skulls. She was the best man in the group. I don't see those guys as the future movers and shakers of America. Barry Bostwick was solid and the rest of the cast did a decent job. I would recommend this movie based on an interesting (if not completely original) concept, sincere acting, and a lack of bad language. I've never been one who thought that foul language just for the sake of foul language added anything to a film. It's nice when you find a film that doesn't abuse it.
[Out of Five] Not bad, Clare Kramer is fine, but..........2006-06-29
This Series is running out of steam. See
it on TV if you can, but see the first 2
in the Series first (Who's?) Barry Bostwick
[he's better in Leslie Nielsen's 'Spy Hard]
is also diabolical in here about Fraternity
boss who has plan to infiltrate his Co. into
US Military with help of CLare's father - until
killed by his son (!) at the end. Good ending!
Don't waste your time..........2006-06-11
If you're a guy, the only real highpoint of this movie is Clare Kramer, although the the character that she plays is rather self-righteous and annoying.
The thing that gets me about this movie is the fact that her character is really indignent that such sexist group like the Skulls is allowed to opperate on campus, but when they relent and allow her to joing, she has no problem with becoming a member of an elitist secret society. That's modern feminism for you, I guess.
Story wise, this movie isn't all that thrilling, and to say that it isn't predictable would would be rather deceptive. There's just nothing about this movie--aside from Claire Kramer--really worth talking about, and there is no way that I'd ever recommend it.
NUMB SKULLS.......2005-11-06
Clare Kramer's passionate and controlled performance elevates this SKULLS entry, possibly the most effective of the trilogy. She plays the daughter of a former Skulls member who challenges their "no female" rule and manages to get herself inducted into the secret covert society. As in the other two SKULLS, a murder occurs with the requisite coverup and it's up to Kramer to expose the organization. The movie has some tense moments and avoids some tired cliches of the other two. Bryce Johnson is the sleazy Roger, and his involvement in the scam is surprisingly resolved. Vets Barry Bostwick and Len Cariou round out the cast and while everything's fairly predictable, a few twists at the end are refreshing.
Oh, Don't Bother ... Just Another One with a Female Lead.......2004-12-12
Claire Kramer (TV's 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and one of the cheerleaders in 'Bring it On') takes the lead of this new sequel to 'The Skulls.' The story about the secret society is not much different this time though, except one thing; instead of a male, a female student delves into the underground world ruled by Barry Bostwick (TV's 'Spin City').
In fact, little difference can be found, compared with the first Skull film featuring Joshua Jackson, so it's more like a retread of the original rather than a sequel. You get a curious, and very ambitious female student in college, who because of her personal reasons is willing to be a member of the secret society. She takes no for answer, as you see, and uses her knowledge about laws to have the authority bend the rules.
And ... if you think there's more to it, you're utterly mistaken. The rest of the film goes on the beaten road, with the 'trails,' 'branding' etc., and finally you see a bloody crime committed. Though Claire Kramer is surprisingly good, the film remains so predictable and unexciting.
The first film had a curiosity value, when you see the thinly-disguised references to Yale, and the real-life Skull and Bones society, even though the film seems to have taken much liberty with the facts (whatever they may be). Now it's just another tired thriller with cliched items. If you have seen the first one, just skip this.

Facial...........2007-07-18
There's this guy who does facial reconstructions for the police. His daughter is about to undergo heart transplantation but he is handed a case which he refuses to look after his daughter.
He is "sent" an assistant and, after much supernatural trauma (many familiar motifs here), he decides to accept the case.
The beauty of this film is that it takes you here, then there, then somewhere else and ultimately leaves you not knowing the direction you're going in...until you've got there.
It's a good one.
Finding a face for the unidentified dead.......2007-06-20
Someone is murdering young women and dumping their skulls. Not only that but the murderer is melting the bodies. If it were merely a matter of removing fingers or pulling out teeth to prevent identification, sure, but the whole body? A very grisly opening scene involving the removal of the heart sets opens Face, so titled because of the rights of the unidentified dead, to get their faces and hence their identities back, setting the theme of the movie.
The person placing names to skulls is National Institute of Scientific Investigation facial reconstruction artist Lee Hyun-min, a widower whose young daughter Jin recently had a heart transplant, but because she is beta-allergic, she is having reactions following surgery. He demands to know whether the donor had heart issues, but the doctor evasively brushes him off by saying that the donor's family wanted confidentiality, plus that he personally checked the heart himself. Lee wants to resign to look after Jin, but the police need him to ID faces ASAP. The director compromises by allowing him to work at home. Lee also sends his daughter to his mother's place in the country away from the hustle and bustle of Seoul.
In comes Jung Sun-Young, his new assistant as appointed by his boss. She's pretty but a bit cheeky, as she leaves behind a skull assigned to him that he refuses to ID. She tells him, "That victim had a face. Whoever it was deserves one, and you can get it back." However, his refusal results in weird happenings, such as weird high-pitched sounds, sand in the sink, and yes, before you can see Ju'on, the presence of a crawling woman in a white dress. The materialization of that presence provides one of the creepier moments of the film. He agrees and lets Sun-Young help him, but on a limited basis. In flashbacks, the viewer sees Jung as a member of a scuba diving club. She also seems to have a philosophical but positive outlook on life. When commented on how she entered facial reconstruction in college, by changing boats, she tells her classmates, "That's what life's all about. Your fate changes before you ever know it. That's the fun part of life."
In the meantime, Detective Suh is investigating the murders, and discovers a connection when he finds out that they had their hearts scanned prior to their deaths. That leads him to finding out about beta-allergy and Dr. Yoon, a renowned heart-transplant specialist at Daeyoung Hospital who also happens to be Jin's doctor. He's the typical intelligent cop with a correct hunch, and with a boss who dismisses his theories. His meeting with Lee leads the latter to wonder if the skull he's working on belonged to the victim whose heart is now in Jin.
Lee's talent as an artist can be seen, his work on the skull, from the extending pegs set on the skull, and the gray-green clay he uses to duplicate muscles and skin. He expertly explains to his assistant how the masseter and zygomatic muscles vary distinctively from person to person and that is why people have different faces. The wrong amount of clay applied to the skull, and one might get a whole different face. He does gradually warm up to Sun-Young, even giving her a hairclip to keep her hair in place after she puts a pair of bulldog clips in her hair. But even after he IDs the skull, the weird noises continue, as well as a dream leading him to yet another skull.
Ostensibly told linearly, a sudden clever twist towards the end makes the viewer realize that such is not the case. And after watching the film, the viewer realizes some innocuous words that in hindsight were clues to the mystery.
Part horror, part suspense, part detective-thriller, the well-directed Face is one of the better Korean films distributed in the U.S. by Tartan Asia Extreme, with its two winning leads, Shin Hyun-Jun as the low-key but gentle Lee, and Song Yoon-Ah as Jung Sun-Young. Face is also about regaining one's soul and happiness. Lee is tired and worried throughout the film because of his daughter and work. And by finding victims their faces, he does them a service and thus gets his grace, or soul back. So if you watch this, you won't lose face--sorry I just couldn't resist.
great j-horror.......2006-11-11
this was an excellent j-horror movie, the subtitles were kinda annoying but when the creeps went down there was no talking, the first time I watched it it freaked me out. a watch and watch again
OLD CARCASS, NEW FLESH .......2006-08-23
"Face" is a typical example of a nice Korean thriller that contains all the necessary for a genre details. It has elements of a horror movie, of cops-vs-maniac films, of a criminal thriller. Director Sang-Gon Yoo keeps the action tense and fast-going so you won't get bored. The story involves a lot of things: gruesome murders after which the murderer dissolves bodies in acid, face-reconstruction, illegal organ transplantation and ghostly apparitions. I know told this way it all may seem a one big mess but finally all the segments of this intricate film perfectly fit like parts of a puzzle.
You'll definately get a twist in the end like you've probably expected. Yes, the scheme this movie is based on is quite recognizable but you can never know all the details... And details make this picture memorable. I must note a perfect acting from all the main performers - I was pleasantly surprised. The cunning story-line, plus great acting and superior directing make "Face" a remarkable film among all other Korean and Asian in general thrillers.
Partly I have to agree with the reviewer 'Ace-of-Stars' who says all those Sadacoesque appearances were absolutely unnecessary. I think they were a bit worn-out but they seemed to fit the story well and this girl with long black hair was actually needed for the script. So... It already became a trademark of Asian horror cinema like a blind (crippled, unpretty, timid - pick any) girl who stays alive in the end of American slashers.
"Face" is definately worth watching, it's not a minute boring, it's well crafted and intense although at the same time pensive like many Korean films.
Face it Gang, it's Good.......2006-07-18
What is not to like ? Great story and top notch acting. Yun-ah Song and Hyeon-jun Shin are outstanding in there roles, I will be keeping my eye on these two.
As you have read this is kind of a haunted C.S.I. sort of story with our main man Hyeon-jun being a forensic artist that can sculpt a face out of clay on a skull like I have seen on Court T.V. and A.M.W.
The ghost are creepy as hell and the story is nice and tight.
You should hunt this film down like John Walsh would track down a "Narco Terrorist".
Customer Reviews:
Redundantly BAD.......2006-12-11
So Bad... Bad science, bad video and waste of money. The same meaningless information over and over. How could they make this big a mess? Wish I had read the other reviews before I paid the twenty bucks. Not even decent filming.... pushed a very weak point way beyond the wall. What that other guy was doing in the film - don't know.. perhaps looking for work and still is.
Wrong Assumption - Purposely Misleading Narrative.......2006-07-01
One has to rate this work with the worst possible ranking, because its main claim that the Exodus didn't happen as tradition states is supported without a foundation. Honest reporting and scientific research should reveal ALL the facts to the audience.
However, full disclosure was not done and I feel this was done on purpose. The viewer is not made aware that nowhere in the story of Exodus, Torah, or any Jewish text does it say that Ramses was the Pharaoh of the Exodus. In fact, the story of the Exodus only mentions Ramses as a location!
Plus, Jewish texts put the Exodus at a much earlier time period in Egyptian history and this is backed up by Archaeological evidence.
If anything, this documentary proves Ramses wasn't the Pharaoh of the Exodus, which supports the Torah timeline.
The fundamental premise is wrong. One would hope that if an "expert" is going to attempt to debunk a text that "expert" should at least be somewhat familiar with it.
I've recently attended a lecture given by archaeological researcher, James D. Long. James is a dynamic speaker and his book, "Riddle Of The Exodus" is even more fascinating. "Scientific method" and sound reasoning are utilized to prove when the Exodus really happened and that the Torah, as well as other ancient Jewish texts provide an accurate account of history. James takes archaeologists in what's known as the "minimalist" camp to task for their lack of biblical knowledge and their frequent attempts to withhold information in attempts to bolster their theories, or help spin their political views.
Junk Science with an Agenda.......2006-06-24
I find that many of the videos claiming to be "documentaries" have an agenda. Sadly, many people see them as factual. Teachers need to be extremely careful when they select films for their students.
Straw man.......2006-06-19
Kent Weeks, rediscoverer of KV5, found three partial human remains in a pit in that tomb. He speculates that one of these (one in particular) is the remains of Amonherkhopshef (Amonherwenemef), firstborn son of Ramses II. Like a lot of people, Weeks saddles on to the mistaken claim that Ramses II "the Great" was the pharaoh of the Exodus. The rest of the video then treats both identifications as factual, then uses those straw men arguments to prove that the Exodus didn't happen.
For example, the skull is that of a grown man, not a child, so despite the fact that no one will ever know the identity of the remains, the words in the narration are, "the Biblical tradition must be wrong." This is unforgivably shoddy, silly, and stupid.
Even more grandiose are the video's claims to show that none of the details of the Exodus, from the identity and age of Moses, through the Plagues, the fountainhead of monotheism, the nature of the escape, all the way through the actual cause of death of the pharaoh, are false.
Since 18th dynasty Hatshepsut's bas relief of her voyage to Punt names the port official who greeted her there, and it matches that of a Solomonic-era port official in charge at Ezion Geber, and since the Amarna archive of the 18th dynasty contains names right out of the Old Testament from the time of the early monarchy of the House of David, Akhenaten must have lived centuries after Moses, and could not have been the source of Moses' monotheism.
And more obviously, the 19th dynasty was not the time of the Exodus.
The video is well put together otherwise. Morgan Freeman's narration is pretty cool. I give the product a mere two stars because the script and the premise isn't worth a you know what. If this is what it takes to keep Kent Weeks excavating KV5 for the rest of his life, close the excavation right now.
Good forensic analyses about a fake historical story !.......2006-05-28
This movie(can NOT be categorized as a documentary movie!) is based on an assumption that Moses killed Ramses II's son. Interestingly the archeologists found a skull of a murdered that is, more likely, closely related to that of RamesesII as indicated by x-ray analysis. The skull for that murdered person for unknown reason had been suppected to be for the son of Rameses II_the only clear reason for such claim was the location of the skull discovery! Based on the bible, the investigators/archealogists started to investigate wheather the son of Ramses(the discovered skull) had been killed by God or Moses..The narrators mentioned that, based on the bible, the older son of Ramses II had been killed by God and this explains why Rameses II left the jews leave Egypt!!!!!!! Then, the movie postulated a lot of additonal scenarios for how this person had been killed! The most acceptable one was that Moeses was in charge of killing the older RamsesII's son. Moreover, the movie makers assumed that there were two phoarohs survived the Exodus; the first one (erronously, based on the movie, was Ramses II) who brought Moses up and the second pharaoh, the murdered person(presumably is the son of Ramses II!). This was really so amayzing!!!! But, what are the proofs for such claims?!!!! Besides, the movie showed moses as if he were a follower of Akhenaten!!! Anyway, I found the forensic analyses were so good, but the whole story of the son of Ramses II was really a supersition!. Highly recommended for people interested in forensic medicine; Not for those interested in real aracheological findings!
