3 out of 5 stars Only one new transfer!!.......2007-09-16

For those Price fans who already own his prior DVD film releases, note that only Witchfinder General is a new transfer to DVD. The other film transfers are from previously released editions. And as such, Twice Told Tales, Theater of Blood, and Madhouse are in letterbox format, not anamorphic. So if you already have these films, Dr. Phibes and Tales of Terror on DVD you only need to buy Witchfinder General separately, you'll get nothing else new here. Fox cleverly fails to disclose the format of its DVDs by calling everything "widescreen" whether or not the films were processed in letterbox or anamorphic formats. Its a huge difference for those of us with HDTVs. What an opportunity lost for remastering these horror classics.

5 out of 5 stars This Price is Right!.......2007-09-15

Ignore the carping here about the thin-sleeve packaging of this set (an asset, anyway, to some of us with large DVD collections and limited shelf space) -- these classic British horror films at a bargain price are worth grabbing! The PHIBES pair and THEATRE OF BLOOD are models of how to camp successfully on a low budget, with Diana Rigg, Coral Browne, Robert Morley and others joining Price to chew every piece of scenery in sight. Screenplay, design, direction -- all great fun. And WITCHFINDER GENERAL has been on many a DVD wish list for years. Price never disappoints, never plays down to his material or his audience, is always full-steam-ahead, to good advantage. If you know these movies, you'll jump for this set. If you don't, check them out -- you'll be glad you did!

The cases in this box set are the SLIM LINE cases and are just not as cool as the reg sized keep cases. Slim Line cases are fine for a TV show but not for collecting movies. Films 5 Stars The oustide package cover art is fine also, just the use of SLIM LINE cases has to be stopped. Warner Bros has caught on that fans don't like being cheated. and these cases just don't make me happy at all.

5 out of 5 stars A collection of Price's better horror films plus extra features.......2007-07-26

This set will contain seven of Vincent Price's better horror films of the 1960's and 1970's and even includes a bonus disc of extra features. MGM is no Warner Home Video when it comes to DVD boxed sets and extra features, but this one shows progress in that direction. The following are the details on the included films and extra features.

Abominable Dr. Phibes: Price gives a campy performance in one of the few horror films which successfully and intentionally joins comedy and horror. Joseph Cotten and Terry-Thomas are just two of the victims on whom Price seeks vengeance for his disfigurement and his wife's death. The Art Deco sets give the film a stylish look and the British deadpan delivery of many of the jokes helps immensely.

Dr. Phibes Rises Again: The disfigured madman (Price) is back as he and his deceased wife go boating down the Underground River of the Dead in this sequel to The Abominable Dr. Phibes. Once again, everybody is in it for the laughs including the set designer.

Tales of Terror - Three stories adapted very loosely from the work of Edgar Allen Poe - "Morella", "The Black Cat" and "The (Facts in the) Case of M. Valdemar", each roughly one half-hour in length.

Twice Told Tales - This is a compilation of three short films based on Nathaniel Hawthorne works - Heidegger's Experiment, Rappaccini's Daughter and The House of Seven Gables. In both this film and "Tales of Terror", the idea is not so much to be true to the original story, as it is to use the foundation of the story to the advantage of Cormen's ability to make scary movies and in Price's ability to star in them.

Theater of Blood: An entertaining horror film about a demented Shakespearean actor (Price) who takes a bloody revenge against the eight theatre critics who gave his performances bad reviews. To me this one of Price's often forgotten and most underrated films. He really hams it up and it works perfectly.

Madhouse: Price stars as an actor who returns to the screen to reprise his role as a killer a few years after his wife-to-be was decapitated by a killer nobody caught. Price is good as always, but it just seems a little tired and more like a tribute to his past and better films.

Witchfinder General (aka Conqueror Worm): In 17th-century England during the struggle between Cromwell and the Crown, Matthew Hopkins (Vincent Price) and his associates seek out and persecute those thought to practice sorcery as well as anyone else who incurs their wrath. When Hopkins executes the priest of a small town for being a warlock, he and his partner find themselves the target of a young soldier who leaves his post in Cromwell's army to hunt down and kill the pair. The movie captures this period in English history very well for a low-budget production. Price is at his menacing, sadistic best without the intentional camp that he injects in so many of his other horror films.

An extras disc will contain a documentary ("Vincent Price: Renaissance Man") and two featurettes ("The Art of Fear" and "Working with Vincent Price"). The set will be available on September 11th.

If you are the least bit sceptical about this DVD look her up on you tube. There are quite a few postings that show her at work. The DVD starts the viewer from the beginning, she never talks down to you. But, she does make sure that the basics are covered. I recommend this to anyone that can't talk after a show.

5 out of 5 stars And then I pitched a scream... ...now I'm a believer!.......2007-08-13

The short review: Buy it and use Cross's advice and exercises!

I've had Melissa Cross's "The Zen of Screaming: Vocal Instruction for a New Breed" for about a month and the breathing exercises and the advice on "Heat and Fire" payed off for me. Today, I was able to put forth lots and lots of tortured death-metal screams and shrieks and am not only not hoarse, but was able to intersperse the screaming and yelling with clean, melodic singing. It was actually less taxing on my vocal folds and larynx than when I try to sing opera as a dramatic baritone (it took death metal screaming to tell me I'm a lighter voice - thanks, death metal and Miss Cross!). And, since I was practicing to "The Wonder Pets" theme and "What's New Pussycat?" while mowing the lawn, I probably freaked out my neighbors.

When you buy this DVD (and you are, aren't you?), please note that the actual screaming/yelling/rasping section is fairly short and it comes after a lot of segments on breathing and some vocal exercises. Do not underestimate either the importance of proper breathing nor the value of the "Heat and Fire" segment. If you've ever torn up your throat singing raspy or beyond raspy and thought screaming was a quick, dead-end stop for your singing career (even if your career would be entirely screaming), you need to learn how to breathe properly and how to use "heat" to add rasping harmonics to your voice and "fire" to make use of the false vocal folds.

Another great thing about this DVD is that Melissa Cross doesn't want to change your voice or change your singing style; she wants you to be able to do your own thing with your own voice over the course of your own lifetime. Very good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome product!.......2007-07-13

I was reluctant at first to acknowledge this product, since I don't like screamo music, and since my own voice is more operatic and rock-oriented. But by watching a friend's copy of The Zen of Screaming, I quickly realized that Melissa Cross is teaching traditional and sound vocal methods, but in a fun, upbeat and non-traditional way that takes the embarrassment and discomfort out of doing vocal exercises and practice. I quickly ordered my own copy, and I can tell you that, regardless of your musical genre, if you sing (and if your ego can agree that there's still a little room for improvement), this DVD is a fantastic asset.

5 out of 5 stars Worth purchasing.......2007-03-11

If you have ever thought about singing or doing anything vocally, this DVD is for you. This instructional DVD is easily worth ten times the price you will pay for it.

3 out of 5 stars A little Disappointed..........2006-11-07

The information you are looking for is in here. The thing that made me disappointes is that for the most part it is an ad for Melissa Cross. She seems like an awesome teacher. I just wish that it was more information on technique than Melissa Cross plugs.

Amazon.com essential video

With the smash hit Scream, novice screenwriter Kevin Williamson and veteran horror director Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) revived the moldering corpse of the teen horror picture, both creatively and commercially, by playfully acknowledging the exhausted clichés and then turning them inside out. Scream is a postmodern slasher movie, a horror film that cleverly deconstructs horror films, then reassembles the dead tissue, and (like Frankenstein's monster) creates new life. When a serial killer starts hacking up their fellow teens, the media-savvy youngsters of Scream realize that the smartest way of sticking around for the sequel is to avoid the terminal behaviors that inevitably doom supporting players in the movies. They've seen all the movies, and the rules of the genre are like second nature to them. One of the scariest/funniest setups features a kid watching John Carpenter's seminal Halloween on video. As Jamie Lee Curtis is shadowed by Michael Meyers and the kid on the couch yells at her to turn around, Craven reverses his camera and we see that the kid should be taking his own advice. The fresh-faced young cast (including Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette) is fun to watch, and their tart dialogue is sprinkled with enough archly self-conscious pop-culture references to make Quentin Tarantino blush. --Jim Emerson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clever to the bone........2007-09-08

Scream directed by Wes Craven is still a classic, one of the few horror films that actually work as a whole. You get a few laughs, some screams and at the end you want to watch the film over and over again. Behind the original Halloween, Scream is my second favorite horror flick. Great performances by Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Aqruette and Drew Barrymore. I highly recommend this movie, it's a real scream!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best!.......2007-08-01

This is one of the few movies that I've ever seen that scares me each and every time I watch it. It was also one of the few shows where I hadn't figured out who the killer was before hand. If you haven't seen this, make it one of your next rentals!

4 out of 5 stars What a Scream!.......2007-07-29

If you have never seen this movie you have missed a good one. Though it is not especially "scary" it is definitely addictive, bloody, captivating, fun, and innovative. I believe that is why the movie has been such a classic for so long. But what else would you expect from Wes Craven. Easily the best slasher since Halloween. A must have in any movie collection!

4 out of 5 stars Great Thriller.......2007-06-17

A great thriller, though extremely cheesy. I'm not a very conservative person, but I was surprised by the amount of swear words. As usual, the special "collector's edition" extras are nothing special.

5 out of 5 stars "There are certain RULES that one must abide by in order to survive a horror movie...".......2007-05-23

By the mid-'90s, the teen slasher genre seemed utterly played out. But in 1996, a seemingly unlikely figure helped resurrect the genre. That man was director Wes Craven, the horror maestro who had himself been largely responsible for kickstarting the genre in the '80s with the classic "A Nightmare On Elm Street" (1984). A dozen years later, he directed a new classic called "Scream." Written by Kevin Williamson ("Dawson's Creek"), it's a self-referential horror film/satire that's both terrifying and hilarious.

Craven had actually written and delivered another self-referential, postmodern take on the teen horror genre two years earlier, with "New Nightmare." But since that film was the seventh installment in the left-for-dead Elm Street series, it was largely overlooked. "Scream," on the other hand, boasted a new story line, more laughs and a hot young cast, and it quickly became a hit with critics and audiences.

Neve Campbell plays Sidney Prescott, a teenage girl still coping with the violent death of her mother a year earlier. Now, a deranged killer is offing her classmates and other members of the community. Worse, the murderer's got his eye set on Sidney, terrorizing her with a series of creepy phone calls. A tabloid reporter (Courtney Cox) thinks the current serial killer may be the same person who murdered Sidney's mom.

Sidney's friends try to comfort her by cracking wise about horror films and offering advice on how she can avoid becoming the killer's latest victim. It may not sound helpful, but it's better than leaving herself in the hands of bumbling Deputy Dwight Riley (the perpetually annoying David Arquette). In the end, everyone is a suspect, and Sidney races to find the killer's identity and save her life.

"Scream" succeeds as both a satire and a horror film. Williamson's excellent script tweaks every scary movie cliche and asks the question every horror buff wants to know: Why, when the heroine is being chased by the killer, does she run up the stairs instead of out the front door? It's a blast to watch the film's characters talk horror, even as they're being stalked by the killer.

Of course, the humorous self-referencing wouldn't be nearly as fun if the movie wasn't damn scary in its own right. With a petrifying opening sequence, Craven immediately establishes that he hasn't lost his touch for delivering scares. Ferociously acted by Drew Barrymore -- giving perhaps her finest performance to date -- it's guaranteed to leave you whimpering.

From there, the laughs and scares come fast and furious and don't stop 'till the film's knockout finale. While "Scream" did regrettably spawn a slew of weak imitations (including its own limp sequels), the original is a scary treat you don't want to miss.

This third installment of the hugely popular Scream trilogy doesn't have the moxie and smarts of its two predecessors, but it's still a great thrill ride. Scripted by Ehren Kruger (from an outline by Scream writer Kevin Williamson), Scream 3 takes the three surviving characters from the first two films--beleagured heroine Sidney (Neve Campbell), ruthless TV journalist Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox Arquette), and hapless deputy Dewey (David Arquette)--and transplants them to the environs of Hollywood. Turns out a familiarly masked killer is stalking the cast of Stab 3, the third installment of the movies within the Scream movies. (Following all this? Don't worry, it's not entirely vital to the plot.) It's supposed to be a fun house of mirrors, with each character encountering the actor playing themselves and visiting reconstructed sets of the murder scenes, but it doesn't have the same snap and crackle of the first two films. Rather than parodying the teen horror genre, Scream 3 seems to be playing by the rules instead of breaking them gleefully, and its postmodern plotting is a little too fast and loose. Williamson's presence is sorely missed--it's the difference between hitting one out of the park and scoring a solid triple. Director Wes Craven, though, still brings his die-hard energy to the proceedings, from the requisite heart-pumping prologue to the go-for-broke (but somewhat predictable) ending. Kudos to Campbell, Cox, and especially Arquette for bringing spirit to characters who should be justifiably tired of being corpse magnets; Campbell is remarkably graceful considering she's saddled with plot twists involving heretofore undisclosed family baggage. And in the film's one inspired stroke of brilliance, Cox's Gale is trailed by a hilarious Parker Posey as the actress playing Gale in Stab 3, who astutely realizes that if they're caught by the killer together, it'll be the real Gale who gets it. If Scream 3 had stuck to such ingenious parody throughout, it would have been a real winner; as it is, it's an energetic shadow of itself. With Scream alums Liev Schreiber and Jamie Kennedy in brief but winning cameos. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars happy with product.......2007-05-17

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Scream Collection...well, almost........2006-12-24

The movies in this box set are enticing and highly enjoyable. Plus, the bonus features on each disc are awesome. I just want to point out one thing. The fourth disc's dvd-rom material is a major let down. It operates on the PC Friendly program and I can't get it to work. The dvd-rom features do look nice, but I haven't been able to get access to them yet. This isn't just my occurrence, I've seen this posted all over the internet. This isn't enough to bring the whole collection down to four stars, though. Thus it is almost the ultimate Scream collection.

3 out of 5 stars Great disc: disappointing film. .......2006-06-21

I had purchased Scream 3 as part of the Box set of Scream films. Although the actual disc presentation and extras are exceptional, to me the film let me down.

The premise is intriguing: that there are more mysteries and unanswered questions surrounding the life and death of Maureen Prescott that even her daughter, Sidney, didn't know about. But somehow the plot premise that Maureen was a B movie actress in horror films seems so out of left field it really doesn't go well with the rest of what has happened in the previous films.

There are some excellent scenes and acting in the film. The most haunting being Sidney's visit to the movie set and seeing the exact replica of her and Stu's home from Woodsboro and viewing the scene of Tatum's demise. The opening sequence is also well done, but not as good as the other two. Parker Posey does steal the film as Jennifer Jolie and Neve Campbell is always good as Sidney Prescott.

An early sequence where a member of a class that Gale Weathers is lecturing asks her if after all the terror that has occured, it was really worth going after the story. That to me would've been a starting point to a similar but different plot.

My plot would consist of this: There is a third film being done in the Stab series, but they would actually shoot in the town of Woodsboro, which has the community up in arms. The attacks by the killer would be directed at the cast, but instead of just pictures of Maureen Prescott: the killer would leave pictures of all the victims starting with Maureen or maybe Casey Becker(Drew Barrymore). There would be another reporter but their story would cover the human element of the story, interviewing family members of the victims. As the body count mounts, a secret would be revealed about the Prescott family and the real reason for all the trouble would be revealed in the final act that would take place at the house where it all started.

I think the First two films are fine book ends, but the third one sticks out like a sore thumb.

Fully aware of its status as the sequel to the surprise hit thriller of 1996, this lively follow-up trades freshness for familiarity, playing on our affection for returning characters while obeying--and then subverting--the "rules" of sequels. Once again, movie references are cleverly employed to draw us into the story, which takes place two years after the events of Scream, at a small Ohio college, where the Scream survivors reunite when another series of mysterious killings begins. Capitalizing on the guesswork involving a host of potential suspects, director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson have crafted a thriller that's more of a Scream clone than a genuinely inventive new story. But the shocks are just as effective, and escalating tension leads to a tautly staged climax that's simultaneously logical and giddily over the top. Background information for trivia buffs: to preserve the secrecy of plot twists, copies of the screenplay were heavily guarded during production and restricted to only the most crucial personnel. When an early draft was circulated on the Internet, screenwriter Kevin Williamson did rewrites, and subsequent drafts were printed with red ink on brown paper, eliminating the threat of photocopying. None of the cast members knew who the killer was until the final scenes were filmed! --Jeff Shannon

Description

Here's the incredible follow-up to the smash hit phenomenon SCREAM! Away at college, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell -- SCREAM, WILD THINGS) thought she'd finally put the shocking murders that shattered her life behind her ... until a copycat killer begins acting out a real-life sequel! Now, as history eerily repeats itself, ambitious reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox -- SCREAM, SCREAM 3), deputy Dewey (David Arquette -- SCREAM, SCREAM 3), and other SCREAM survivors find themselves trapped in a terrifyingly clever plotline where no one is safe -- or beyond suspicion! Director Wes Craven (SCREAM) and hit-making writer Kevin Williamson (SCREAM, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER) team up once again and deliver the big screen's hippest, coolest, edgiest thrill-ride ever!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Certainly the best of the Scream Trilogy..........2007-08-11

The second film in the Scream trilogy is by far superior to the first movie and the final sequel. This film has a lot of star power, more suspense, and a better plot twist. The first time that I saw this movie in theatres it kept me on the edge of my seat and I definitely screamed after the opening scene...

3 out of 5 stars More scream, less theme.......2007-03-11

Just as they did in the first film, director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson have some witty, metacognitive fun with the conventions of the horror genre in this tale of survivors from the original "Scream" facing off against a copycat. Points made include how African Americans are thought to have a more realistic responses to horror situations yet are always among the first characters to die, the need for sequels to be gorier than originals, and the commercialization and packaging of spectacular cases of real-world violence. Unfortunately, the rule most effectively dramatized is the one that tells us that sequels are never as good as the original. All of the wit is packed into the first 40% of the film. By the time we get to the end, it has degenerated into a lot of running and stabbing and pointless plot twists.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best of all three Scream movies!!.......2006-07-19

The first Scream was fine, very cool, with scenes that could scare you to death...great.. The third and last Scream was maybe the worst, a little too predictable and boring sometimes, plus funny in other scenes. But this one, Scream 2, is the most terrifying of all them. The ways Ghostface appears are very horrifying, and you literally are on the edge of your seat the whole time....

One thing I have to mention is that the music they used in this movie was perfect. In a horror film, the music helps a lot, to remark the suspense, and that works amazingly good in this movie. Maybe the scene that scares the most is the one in which Sydney is at the theatre....with Ghostface chasing her. That scene is great!

The whole movie is great!, I hadrly recommend this movie, and this is not one of those trilogies in which you must see the first part otherwise you won't understand anything, that doesn't happen with Scream. If you want to see a good quality horror film, see Scream 2.

Greetings from Chile :)

3 out of 5 stars Wes' highly ambitious mess.......2006-07-05

Wes Craven's follow-up to his highly successfull 1996 self-referential groundbreaker is a big-budget gaudy mess of a movie, albeit an ambitious one. As with the previous film, the best part is at the beginning: a surreal Rocky-Horror like parody of a sneak preview of "Stab," that chronicles the events of the first Scream film with gleeful self-parody and brazen exploitation (featuring Heather Graham doing some really sly comic work in the now-famous Drew Barrymore Gets Killed opening sequence). From that point out, the film degenerates into a somewhat routine self-parody as well, though this one not as funny or as shocking as the scene in the cinema. It's not bad, not at all....there are some good bits. However the overall tone is smug and a bit too forced, as screenwriter Williamson repeatedly tries to outdo his script for the previous Scream. Things get more and more chaotic (this has got to be one of the LOUDEST films in recent memory), but to no real satisfying end. The momentum doesn't hold this time and it plays like a made for TV film at some points. Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courtney Cox all wear on the nerves as their character's plot-lines and dialogue become so cloying and comfy-cozy we begin to realize they'll definitely be around for future installments, and given their limited ranges as performers, that's not necessarily a good thing. On the other hand, there are good solid turns from Jamie Kennedy (livening things up again as movie freak Randy) and from the supporting cast which includes Sarah Michelle Gellar in a "When a Stranger Calls" type homage, and Laurie Metcalf, who looks like she's having the time of her life serving up a very cold hammy casserole.

5 out of 5 stars A sequel that's a great companion piece to the original.......2006-06-21

Throughout the years, I've grown to appreciate Scream 2 as one of the best sequels ever. It doesn't insult the intelligence of the audience, you care for all the characters and their well being and most importantly when its revealed who's responsible for the killings: the motivation makes perfect sense.

It's fun to watch the beginning as Jada Pinkett-Smith bemoans the fact that horror films have never really had black actors and/or actresses, and yet this film has four talented black actors including Duane Martin, Omar Epps, the lovely Elise Neal and Jada.

Even when an actor has a small part like Sarah Michelle Gellar, it becomes pivitol to the plot. I know in the audio commentary Wes Craven didn't really like the explanation of how the first three characters were targeted in reference to the original. For me it made perfect sense, which shows the the genius of Kevin Williams' script.

With New Nightmare, Scream and Scream 2: Wes Craven completed a neat hat trick. Although in my eyes, Scream 3 was very much a letdown.

Description

Based on elements from the stories of Mark Twain, this feature-length ClaymationÂ(r) fantasy follows the adventures of Tom Sawyer, Becky Thatcher, and Huck Finn as they stowaway aboard the interplanetary balloon of Mark Twain. Twain, disgusted with the Human Race, is intent upon finding Halley's Comet and crashing into it, achieving his "destiny." It's up to Tom, Becky, and Huck to convince him hat his judgment is wrong, and that he still has much to offer humanity that might make a difference. Their efforts aren't just charitable; if they fail, they will share Twain's fate. Along the way, they use a magical time portal to get a detailed overview of the Twain philosophy, observing the "historical" events that inspired his works.

5 out of 5 stars Great Childhood Memory!.......2007-07-29

I am 30 years old and remember seeing this movie when I was 5 years old (to all you parents who are disturbed by some of the scenes - I turned out alright, even have my own company - I think children have a lot thicker skin than given credit) and loved it then, still love it now. I have yet to see an animated movie (cell, CGI, or clay) that comes close to the quality of this one. The expressions of the characters are amazing. Very entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars will vinton is da shiiiii-.......2007-05-17

if you dig claymation or loved will's noid/cali raisins/pee-wee dinos you need this!!! really trippy with a few parts which might actually scare youngsters so parents, watch it first!

5 out of 5 stars Unmatched Claymation Art, caricature done right.......2007-04-13

Aside from the plot, the film is a magnificant work in clay art.
Every aspect of it, smudged, shaped, sculpted clay... and this alone, makes this a masterpiece in my opinion. Every background, character and landscape element is clay and I sat amazed, thinking of the intensive work that goes into a feature length piece like this.. well, there simply IS nothing like this in claymation.
If you make caricatures, or need a resource to get your artistic juices flowing in sculpting miniatures, then this is simply IT.
The story is a good one also, but that has been much commented on I'm sure.. so, I keep my comments to defining it as simple excellence in art and design!

Great for the entire family!

5 out of 5 stars Classic, artistic and all around stunning claymation work.......2007-04-03

I remember when I saw this as a kid and I instantly fell i in love with the artistic process of how Will Vinton created this film. Because of this film, I have always had a deep interest in the art. I recommend this, it's dark, entertaining and artistic. Stunning work.

4 out of 5 stars come take me away in your flying machine ..........2007-03-25

this is a great find. i thought i was renting the legendarily horrible 1940s biopic with fredric march, but instead i got this feature-length claymation film from will ("california raisins") vinton which takes tom sawyer, becky sharp, and huck finn on a cosmic ride via airship in search of the comet which host and tour guide mark twain expects to carry him off to eternity. rather than rely on the most familiar twain stories, this film delves into work like "mysterious stranger" and "diaries of adam & eve", and it works as a great introduction to the literary output of the most accessible of americas leading 19th century writers. it is NOT a kids movie -- unless your kids are sharp and incisive and inquisitive.

4 out of 5 stars For Fans of Campy Sci-Fi and Phillip K. Dick.......2007-03-29

Filmed in the Montreal area during that period of time in the 90s when it was economically advantageous to shoot movies in Quebec, Screamers is a loose adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story "Second Variety". It is a throw-back to the days when campy sci-fi was still a marketable genre, it feels more late 80s than mid 90s. Peter Weller is seems to fit comfortably into this genre with just enough over-acting to not compromise his integrity.

Personally, I really loved the scenes that involved the screamers themselves: mechanical devices reminiscent of rats sporting razor sharp saw-blades in their heads. They are programmed to eliminate the "enemy" in this post apocalyptic setting, but, in the tradition of all great sci-fi, SOMETHING GOES TERRIBLY WRONG(spoken in classic, cinematic threateningly low voice). All to say that many will end up with severed limbs.

Definately a fun movie to watch, despite its lacking somewhat in the second act. It turns out that two of my wife's cousins were extras in the final act of the movie when dozens of "davids" come marching out of the compound. Makes the whole thing that much more enjoyable for me.

Scott

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!.......2007-03-14

I loved this movie for it's sci-fi purity and simplicity. There's military, space, AI, mystery, suspense, nukes, drama, sexual tension, love... I'm planning to read more of the works from the writer that wrote the story the movie is based on. This is a classic sci-fi movie. Add it to your collection and get ready to watch it every 2 or 3 months.

3 out of 5 stars Close to Phil Dicks vision, but not quite.......2007-02-04

I have collected books written by Philip K. Dick for as long as I can remember, including over 100 of his short stories in the original publication edtion going back to 1952. I've got all movies related to him, inluding Barjo, which is really pretty good, as an aside. Even the Valis opera on CD which is kind of strange.

Anyway, this movie, as said elsewhere, is a very good B-movie. There are no A-list actors here, mediocre special effects and some dropped threads in the story line here and there. But in general is the kind of movie I expect to be shown on a Saturday afternoon scary movie matinee.

Don't watch this expecting a high intensity movie. There are parts that are slow, but for the most part it moves along in a fairly steady pace keeping you interested in it long enough to finish your popcorn.

The ending is expected and nothing is really a surprise. Almost looks like a grad school film project, but nothing wrong with that, look at Halloween and THX 1138.

So, neither 1 nor 5 stars, but in the middle. Find it used, well worth 5 bucks.

1 out of 5 stars AVOID THIS PRODUCT!!!!! NOT WIDE SCREEN!!!!.......2007-01-08

AVOID THIS PRODUCT!!!!

IT IS NOT WIDESCREEN AS ADVERTIZED!!!!

I have ordered and returned this product 3 times. It is not widescreen. There is no option to for viewing it as widescreen. Amazon has no explanation for the mistake and unfortunately they will not correct the web page. This leads to an interesting question. Why does Mr. Leach state in his review that the disk offers a widescreen option when it doesn't? Either Amazon is massively screwing up the order or he is not reviewing this actual disk from Amazon. If that's the case, he should not be providing a review on it.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL ADAPTATION OF DICK'S SHORT STORY 'SECOND VARIETY' GETS THE MORBID & PARANOID ATMOSPHERE DOWN COLD.......2006-10-26

FIRST OFF: ALL SCI-FI GETS THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT FROM ME

I must admit that this type of film, gritty futuristic sci-fi set on another planet, would have to be horrid for me to not like it. Nevertheless, I do believe that, objectively speaking, 'Screamers', based on the short story 'Second Variety' by Philip K. Dick, is an excellent and worthwhile film.

***---> $20 MILLION FOR A B-FILM?

It seems rather amazing that by 1995, a 20-million dollar budget would only produce a 'B film' which the critics have referred to as "budget challenged"! I do agree that more effort should have been made to create the setting for this film, but would that really have made it more effective? 'Screamers' still manages to create a rather chilling atmosphere where it feels like something horrible is about to happen, but we don't quite know what. The world of 'Screamers' seems real enough and the bleakness seems totally appropriate to the subject. Nevertheless, there is something in 'Screamers' that seems like it was filmed with the least amount of scenery, and whatever was on hand was adapted to fit the story. Maybe this is true and maybe not. In any event, the film still works and does not feel like it is suffering from a lack of anything, specifically, that a bigger budget would have bought.

***---> IN A NUTSHELL [there may be plot spoilers below]

Here we have a planet that was exploited for a new form of energy which fizzled out as it generated an immense, toxic, radioactive waste as a by-product of its production. Two factions collided over the issue and it is now 20 years later. The year is 2078 and there is little left of the planet Sirius 6B, once a real garden spot, we are told. A lone soldier comes to the alliance bunker where Marshall Joseph Hendricksson [Peter Weller] is commanding, with a message which seems to offer a peaceful solution to the war that has ravaged the planet. From here the story goes on the road, a kind of trek that we have seen in the 'Wizard of Oz'. Marshall Hendricksson departs from the bunker with one new arrival in search of his N.E.B.s counterpart to sort out the meaning of the peace offering.

--- ON THE WAY --- EXPOSITION AS WE HIKE TOWARD THE NEB's BUNKER

Everything you will ever want to know about the situation on Sirius 6B and more is delivered via a thinly-disguised expository lump. This comes in the form of Hendricksson telling the new arrival, 'Ace' [Andrew Lauer], who he has taken with him on the trek, everything WE need to know in order to better understand this rather meandering tale. On the way to meet with his NEBs counterpart, the Marshall and Ace find a little boy who appears to be orphaned, several NEBs stragglers, and an attractive black marketeer [Jennifer Rubin]. All of these people have a distinct and vital role in the story, and little is as it seems.

--- AND OF COURSE THERE ARE SCREAMERS!!!!!

These screamers are the real deal here and we never really know what is happening with them and what motivates them because the Alliance that created them, represented here by Marshall Hendricksson, doesn't know either. We do know that they are evolving and upgrading themselves in many rather scary ways and that nobody is safe as long as they are in the same universe as human beings.

And there lies the heart of the story -- the Screamers. Just what is their significance to the human race????? After you see the film you will know!

2 out of 5 stars Master of Horror? Most of the movies in this series run from.......2007-09-10

bland to mildly entertaining. You'd think with all of the experience these "Masters" have the movies would be wet yer pants scary. But they're not. The sad part is most of these movies have a good premise and could be developed but for some reason they pull back and mute the horror. Why? I don't know. Again, this Ice Cream Demented Clown movie could have been really scarey but it's just so much melted ice cream.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, Creepy & Stupid! -- coulrophobics beware!.......2007-08-17

Yes fellow horror fans "We All Scream For Ice Cream" is on the cheesy side of horror(although Forsythe is excellent as both good guy/bad guy versions of Buster the clown). The film is just littered with bad dialog oozing from the mouths of the other players, but when you mix it in with the creepy story and the goofy tongue & cheek way that buster kills off his victims you can't help but be reminded of another fun 80's clown flick loaded with cheese in "Killer Clowns From Outer Space". Speaking of the 80's, if this film was made back then it would have fit in perfect with the times and something tells me it would be one of those fun cult classic movies from the 80's that horror fans(like myself) would be eagerly waiting on it's dvd release. Could have been much better but I enjoyed it for what it was...fun,creepy & stupid!

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2007-08-16

I didn't think this was too bad of a movie. It was definitely entertaining. It wasn't petrifying but most of the newer Masters of Horror movies aren't really scary.

Personally, I like "b" killer-clown horror movies so that's probably why I thought this movie was entertaining. This movie is more of a renter, I wouldn't recommend buying it unless you want to buy the whole collection.

2 out of 5 stars An Ice Cream Man is back from the dead to exact revenge.......2007-07-14

This actually wasn't all that bad. It wasn't scary but it did have an interesting story line somewhat similar to Stephen Kings "IT". It may be worth checking out if you aren't expecting too much in the way of horror, and it's only 57 minutes long.

4 out of 5 stars [insert "Ice Cream" punned title].......2007-06-19

Ok, to begin with... this is probably the most wholeheartedly fun episode of them all for season 2! Granted, if you ge this expecting horror and terror, its not there (well... some parts are creepy), but really.. this is just good ole fashioned entertaining. I mean, come on... William Forsythe plays a semi retarded clown ghost out for revenge! Thats a selling point right there!

I'm not going to go into the plot very much, but this episode is VERY cheesy - but also VERY entertaining. I liked it, and I recommended it to anyone who enjoys the MOH series.

Overall, its just a good way to spend 55 mins. Its hilarious, fun, creepy, and amusing. Its a good time throughout ... without the calories.

When Randy the video geek rattles off the rules of surviving a horror movie in Wes Craven's Scream, he speaks for a generation of filmgoers who are all too aware of slasher movie clichés. Playfully scripted by Kevin Williamson with a self-aware wink and more than a few nods to its grandfathers (from Psycho to Halloween to the Friday the 13th dynasty), Scream skewers teen horror conventions with loving reverence while re-creating them in a modern, movie-savvy context. And so goes the series, which continues the satirical spoofing by tackling (what else?) sequels while sustaining its own self-contained mythology. Catty reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) turns grisly murders into lurid bestsellers, a cult of killer wannabes continues to hunt spunky psycho-survivor Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) for their 15 minutes of fame, and a cheesy movie series (Stab) develops within the movie series.

Scream remains the high point of the series--a fresh take on a genre long since collapsed into routine, but Scream 2 spoofs itself with witty humor ("Why would anyone want to do that? Sequels suck!" opines college film student Randy), and delights with more elaborate set pieces and all-new rules for surviving a horror movie sequel. The endangered veterans of the original film reunite one last time for Scream 3, which plays out on the movie set of Stab 3. (It's a trilogy within a trilogy!) With Williamson gone, replacement screenwriter Ehran Kruger tries to mine the formula one more time. It's a little tired by now, and pale imitations (Urban Legend, I Know What You Did Last Summer) have further drained the zeitgeist, but the film bubbles with bright humor, and director Craven is stylistically at the top of his game. As a trilogy, it remains both the most consistently entertaining and self-aware horror series ever made. --Sean Axmaker

it arrived in a timely manner and played well.

5 out of 5 stars SCREAM IS A CLASSIC (SCREAM 4 ?).......2006-06-20

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME
SCREAM 3 IS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE
THEN THE FIRST SCREAM
THEN SCREAM 2

IV'E BEEN HEARING ABOUT THEY ARE GOING TO MAKE SCREAM 4 NOW FOR A WHILE,I THINK THEY SHOULD AND MAKE IT THE FINAL CHAPTER.IT WOULD BE COOL IF FINALLY SIDNEY SNAPPED AND SHE TURNED OUT TO BE THE KILLER,I THINK IT WOULD BE A COOL ENDING,
OR HAVE HER MOM COME BACK FROM THE GRAVE.
