Viewers may find some marginal entertainment in the Wishmaster series' fourth entry, which attempts to cast its perverse anti-hero, the Djinn, in a sympathetic light. However, silly plot developments and childish splatter effects undo whatever interest is generated by the premise. This time around, the Djinn is summoned by a woman whose boyfriend was crippled in an accident. He assumes the form of her lawyer and offers her the standard three wishes, two of which bring her a healthy settlement and a boost to her sex life. However, the Djinn¹s generosity comes with a price: when he grants the third wish, more Djinn will be released from Hell to bring destruction to Earth. But in order to do this, he must make the woman love his true form (a horned demon). This nominally intriguing idea is bungled at every turn by hamfisted scripting and performances, making Wishmaster 4 a must-see for series completists only. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Much better than 3 - now can we have a 5th?.......2007-01-26

This installment was a vast improvement over the third. John Novak is much better in this movie than in the last and I think he was given a better chance to shine here. He is witty and scary, which is what I say about the first Djinn, Andrew Divoff. The plot of this film is much better than the third and I also enjoyed both audio commentaries. Novak is fun and really enjoys this character.

The prophecy ends up unfulfilled and if you listen to the director's commentaries, you will understand why.

Now I hope that somebody someday will set to making a Wishmaster 5! Either Divoff or Novak would be fine, but the series still has lots of potential.

Also, as a side note, for those who are interested, this movie is smoke free, which is a sharp contrast to the first two films. The original Wishmaster is almost excessive in that regard but the writer and director justify it in the commentary by saying "who cares..... we're not glorifying it. Look who's smoking - a bum, a demon, and a neurotic". Still, while the one scene of the Djinn picking up a butt (that a filthy bum just had in his mouth) is humorous and makes a point, the rest of the film would have been just fine without it. In any case, it was refreshing to see an R movie like Wishmaster 4 devoid of smoking.

Is for Wes Craven to take the reigns back and make this series speak for itself by getting Andrew Divoff again and making it darker in nature like Freddy Krueger.

The actors were laughing at themselves in the extras in 'Gates of Hell = Sword of Justice even the actress that got laid on the floor of the college dorm. Nice Boobies!!!

3 out of 5 stars The nudity helps.......2006-08-03

A woman (with an amazing rack) accidentally releases a demon into the world. He helps her with some legal matters and wants her soul in return, but first he'll give her three wishes.
It's a no-brainer movie that is fun if you take it for what it is.

1 out of 5 stars Why bother?.......2005-08-10

I would go into a rant about how stupid it is that they keep making these movies without Andrew Divoff on board, but he's probably the smart one. It was most likely his CHOICE to stop doing these movies once the scripts started getting bad.

Let's face it, fellow horror fans. The series is dead. Chris Angel and Artisan killed it, and it will never be the same. We'll always have 1 and 2, though. I mean c'mon, do they really expect us to LIKE this dreck? Is nothing sacred anymore?!?

If you're just dying to hear a synopsis, many of the other reviews will indulge you. But between you and me, don't bother. Use your hard earned dollars to rent either the original Wishmaster or any of the following better horror films (and in most cases, their respective sequels):

Halloween; Friday the 13th; The Fog; Nightmare on Elm Street; Child's Play; Suspiria; Creepshow; Evil Dead; Psycho; Desecration; Phantasm; The Shining; Carrie; Night of the Living Dead (or any other Romero movie); Demon Knight; Bordello of Blood; The Exorcist; The Stepfather; Cape Fear; Silence of the Lambs; Gremlins; Critters; Texas Chainsaw Massacre; Alien; Jaws; Dracula; Poltergeist; The Birds; Invasion of the Body Snatchers; Seven; The Omen; Misery; The Fly; Scream; Leprechaun...

Well, you get the picture. This movie is bad.

4 out of 5 stars Wishmaster 4 - The Prophecy Fufilled-.......2004-08-17

Ok. So it's not scary...at all. It's not even remotely serious like the first 2 attempted to be.

But it's funny as hell. The main actor looks so horrible in his foam rubber body suit you can't help but laugh. The terrible over-gore scenes, the bad one liners... really it's like Army of Darkness Djinn style.

Plus the Djinn gets some... so you gotta kind of cheer him on a bit. Don't rent or buy for a good scare, rent or buy for a good laugh.
