3 out of 5 stars Good, not great.......2007-09-15

Ghost in the Machine is my favorite album, but unfortunately Sting decided to use horn section instead of hiring a decent keyboard player for this tour and that was a huge mistake. The horns are annoying most of the time and add nothing to the songs.

However, there are some songs that work: "Bring on the Night", "Demolition Man" and "Shadows in the Rain" are all enjoyable and its the Police after all so even an average show by the Police is not to be missed.

I am still waiting for the day they release the "Shea Stadium" 8/18/83 as it was their most historic concert.

And instead of watching a DVD go see them in concert! They are touring after all... :)

    4 out of 5 stars More PLEASE!.......2007-09-02

With the Police reunion in full swing (albeit unaffordable for me, even on a physician's salary!) those of us who worshipped the Police in the 80's can only hope that Sting and the boys will dig into the boxes for some old live footage and bring us some new DVD's. A redone "Police Around the World" would be nice and some pre-Synchronicity live shows would be awesome. I have a poor quality recording of the Police in Chile from the Ghost in the Machine tour that is just awesome from a concert standpoint, though the quality is awful (I compiled it from YouTube videos and burned it myself). Which brings us to this DVD...the quality is pretty good. I agree with others that the instrument mix was a failed experiment...the horns and Sting's footpedal organ are more distracting than helpful to the music. Sting was obviously tired of what he could accomplish with a 3 piece band, and trying to see what he could come up with. My Chile concert shows that he could make it work...and it certainly worked fine when I saw them in Greensboro during this tour. Speaking of annoying, Sting takes a bite of something like a powdered donut during the show and the lingering powder at the corner of his mouth is funny and annoying. Even rock gods can look silly. Then again, maybe this is why this video is not in wide production...I'm sure Sting was quite pissed that they payed for a video crew for this show and ended up with powdered sugar on his face! Overall, with no other DVD's readily available, I am glad to have this one. While I thought the Synchronicity concert was awesome when I saw it live, looking back at the DVD, the earlier iterations of the Police were much more organic in terms of the music and the band's interactions on stage.

4 out of 5 stars Good DVD for big fans..........2007-08-04

This probably wouldn't be the biggest hit with the more casual fans, but it is a nice show to have for the bigger fans who want as much as they can get from a favorite band. Being one of the people who want to see and hear all that I can, I loved it. However, if you're more of a casual Police fan, go for the Synchronicity concert first, and then try to catch the bootlegs and such.

5 out of 5 stars Only a Transitional Period for The Police!..........2007-07-27

It's been said that The Police is coming in August to play again in Mexico, but the first time was in 1980 when I saw a concert of The Police Live in the city of Mexico, playing the songs of their then latest album "Zenyatta Mondatta". The gig was a real spontaneous magical moment. Everybody were exited as the songs gone bye with the high driving energy of a ¡trio!: Stewart Copeland, a maravellous rhythmic drummer owner of a great technic; Andy Summers, a creative guitarist who's powerful cool chords where the perfect asset for the band's arrangements; and Gordon Summer (who is known better as "Sting") with an enigmatic personality, amaze for his bass lines that gave good melodies to the Rock Genre.

The Ghost in the machine concert is a transitional musical stage for The Police Guys; it's a little strange gig for the way that sting performs in the stage while he's eating a pineapple or playing the taurus pedals out of time in the first track "Message In A Bottle" (the Taurus pedals' idea is good) or the adition of a keyboard next to Andy Summers' side that he almost never played, but overall the music is really fantastic and well played by the band. The horn section is a great asset for the support of the songs, and it's a more natural way to enrich the music of a Rock group. I really prefer to see The Police this way than in the last Atlanta's concert with less Rock and roll feel. I'm not a die hard fan, but at least in this concert their effort is more apreciated in songs like "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", "Spirits In The Material World" or "Invisible Sun", where we can realize about the difficulty to present and perform overdubbed studio material that It's not the same in a live situation. Great!... By the other side the perform of songs like "Don't Stand So Close To Me", "When The World Is Running Down..." or "The Do Do Do The Da Da Da" are amazing without forget the classic songs of their first and second albums like "Roxanne" or "Walking in the moon". So Good Luck!...

    3 out of 5 stars For Die-Hards Only.......2007-03-28

I was actually at a show from this tour and it seemed a lot better than represented here.

This is cool for a time capsule, and there are some okay performances of some songs, but they're undercut by the bad mix and iffy camera work.

Oh, and then those horns. Thank God THAT idea never took hold after this tour. Eeesh.

The only thing worse than the horns was Sting's foot-synth which he uses on a couple of songs. The effect, in a word: tragic. It sounds more like a car alarm than a good musical idea.

Far, far superior is the Synchronicity concert--buy that.

AND wait for "Police Around the World" to come out on DVD. That is the best document of early Police and has killer performances from all over the world.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad effort for a minor Marvel character.......2007-05-17

I actually enjoyed this movie more than I expected. I think it's a case where the filmmakers had a very limited budget to work with, and rather than use a lot of cheap CGI shots and cram the movie with horrible-looking action (like many made-for-SciFi Channel movies), they instead opted for the old tried and true Hollywood low-budget monster movie formula: try to create a lot of suspense and atmosphere and don't show the monster until the end. I am a fan of the Man-Thing comics, and I will say that the movie did capture a pretty good comic-book vibe, with the characters, eerie greenish swamp scene lighting, and the sets, art design and editing---unfortunately, it doesn't really feel like the Man-Thing comic. I wish they would have kept the "burning touch" power of Man-Thing, and featured a little more action and monster scenes. But, the creature did look pretty good when he finally appeared, and in general the acting, the score, and especially the cinematography were fairly solid. I also appreciated the fact that they went for a very serious vibe, instead of the camp approach of the 80's Swamp Thing movies.

If you're looking for an action-packed, big budget version of the Man-Thing comic, you'll be disappointed in this one. If you're looking for a good looking, slow-paced comic book movie about a swamp monster (that does touch on some of the environmental themes of the comics) then you might enjoy this one like I did.

2 out of 5 stars Something is missing....................2007-03-15

Was it the bad acting, or a bad script...i think i was both. The cgi and
the sets were good, the gore was pretty good and detailed, but to see the
man thing, and other effects, you had to sit through this movie that
tried to put you to sleep. Good for a viewing.

3 out of 5 stars Not total crap..........2006-12-15

Very, very loosely based on the Marvel comic of the same name, MAN-THING is about a shambling tree monster killing peope in a swamp because it's swamp home is being corrupted by corporate scumbags. The creatures just wanders around the swamp killing random people with tentecles that come out of it's back. There's one good kill at the end where the creature pumps oil into the human villian, causing him to puke black stuff. The other deaths are equally brutal, but that's the only one we really see.

The acting? Bad. The writing? Bad. Most of the direction? Bad. The film starts with some genuinely creepy shots of the swamp the Man-Thing resides in, and there are some neat shots later on, but other then that, the direction is bland and disorienting. The effects are good, and the monster looks very cool and real, but we never see it until the final ten minutes.

If you want to see Treebeard from LOTR go on a mad killing spree, making branches grow out of people's mouths, then watch MAN-THING. If not, avoid.

4 out of 5 stars Not The Comic I Remember.......2006-10-12

A new sheriff arrives in the small town of Bywater and is immediately put to the test as a large band of protestors are holding up construction at a oil drilling site. The land in question is important to the local Native Americans. There is also a huge number of missing persons recently reported. Are the two connected?

Although this film bears the Marvel Comics logo, it bears little resemblance to the comics I used to read. Despite that it makes for a pretty good film. This Man-Thing is huge (15 feet tall) and really quite scary-looking once we get a look at it. Man-Thing is a force of nature that has arisen to fight the desecration of the swamp and its natural resources by the oil company specifically and people in general. Native American legends, greed, dirty dealings and protestors all have to be dealt with to stop the trouble and killings in the swamp. Check it out.

I have to say that I rather liked this film. Right at the start I decided to disassociate it from the comic. As a film it works pretty well but as a comic adaptation it is pretty much a failure. This was obvious with the opening scene of nudity and sex (although the original comic could be pretty racy at times). Here the title creature is purely a force of nature with no human origin and its touch does not burn, fear or no fear. It is sad to see Marvel gave approval for such a way-out adaptation. There other adaptations have included many changes but were at hear true to the comics while this one just isn't there. If you want a good monster film then this one is really quite good. If you want a screen version of the comic then you should avoid this one.

    1 out of 5 stars Terrible Movie.......2006-09-10

Anyone giving this movie more than 2 stars are either people who need to justify their $10 spent, or someone who was attached to the movie that is now bankrupt.

The truth is, this is a horrible movie. The acting is stiff and one-dimensional. The Special effects are laughable. Swamp Thing is Citizen Kane compaired to this film.

Let me use the 90 minutes of my life that I will never get back and warn you all to stay away from this movie. This movie is just horrible.

First off, Man-Thing. Man-Thing has less than 3 minutes of actual Screen time. 2 1/2 minutes only come at the very end. By way of comparison, the oil pump (which in my opinion must have been the most expensive prop due to its screen time) has over 9 minutes of screen time. Yup, they keep showing this one pump (only comes as high as the actors shoulders btw) over and over again. In fact, it is also the setting for the movies climatic scene where Man-Thing shows up. Talk about special effects....did you ever see the movie "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure?" If you did, remember that scene in the truck with Large Marge where her face gets all animated with claymation and scared Pee-Wee out of the truck? Well, that's about the level of effects for the Man-Thing. He stands there motionless, except for his tendrels, which has a cartoony look to them as they wiggle about.

Want to know about dialogue??? Best line in the movie:

Sheriff: "Why do they call this town Bywater?"
Man In Boat: "Cause it's by the water."

It's right up there with "here's looking at you, kid." Isn't it?

3 out of 5 stars Everyone is searching for something.......2007-05-18

For the era in which this film was made, it is one I would consider pretty good overall, but by today's standards, It is not something I really want to watch again. It is a rather confusing story and doesn't deliver on the promises it's description would imply. Perhaps a second viewing would fill in some gaps and shed a little more light on some of this. The acting is alright, but could be better. The content is disappointing and the lighting throughout is not very good. It does have a few high spots and the actors aren't bad looking, and the ending IS surprisingly pretty good. I was not impressed real well with the casting on this one, and felt they could have found better people to fit many of the parts. It does deliver a little nudity which gives it more appeal, but also done tastefully as not to turn the film into a porn flick. It starts out with a whole lot more appeal than it ends with, and kinda loses steam as it goes along. This is an openly exposed look at some of the difficulties of the gay life, and finding love, versus shallow sexual fulfillment. It is also a historic look back at gay life in the 1970's which exposes a few differences to gay life today and how much it has changed. It does have some fun and entertaining moments here and there, especially in the ending. I would have to say I really do like this film up to a certain point, but there's just something missing that makes it a little disappointing as well. In it's time, this film was probably satisfying to it's audience, but I think maybe it's time is too long gone, and we've progressed today to much better films, which puts this one in it's own little time capsule, making it more suitable for history, than entertainment. I'll give it one thumb up and rate it with three stars, but I honestly wouldn't recommend buying it unless you just can't find anything else. If you're looking for something special about this being the "25th Anniversary Edition", you can stop looking. It is different from the original only in format as it is now on DVD. I found nothing else about it to differentiate it from the original release. Pretty good, but pretty disappointing overall.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent In Spite Of Dated Elements.......2005-04-04

The story itself is rather ordinary for a gay film, but the fact that it was done at all in 1973 is extraordinary. And the film captures the time and place very well. It is quite well-acted, with the late Robert Joel playing an former monk who decides to find love and commitment in New York City. But finding the love he longs for turns out to be more complicated than he imagined. This is a real blast from the past, before the days of gym-toned bodies, when guys were still wearing shag haircuts. A must view for fans of gay cinema.

5 out of 5 stars 1973! The "original" Gay Pride film still relevant today!.......2004-04-12

This is a film with extraordinary vision as it was way ahead of its time. 1973... the gay rights movement that started at Stonewall was only 4 years old. Gays, in general, were still mostly "closeted" with their own underground society. Psychologists had just a few years earlier declared homosexuality not to be a personality disorder. Homosexuality as a topic for discussion was a new frontier for most Americans.... So here comes a film depicting gay men in an in-depth way involving their feelings, their relationships, their social interactions- full frontal nudity- and prophetically, the main character, David, as a priest who leaves the church after coming to terms with his sexuality. All "taboo" subjects in mainstream America involved at the time with Richard Nixon and the Watergate hearings. It is amazing that this film was made in 1973 and that the producers were able to get actors with the courage to participate in the making of such a film.

The storyline, in a nutshell, shows David wanting to commit to Mark. Mark does, hesitantly, due to his commitment-phobia and having a different value system, which finally drives a wedge between them and ends the relationship. David goes through the emotional ringer and then meets Jason. Jason wants to commit after a time, but David has become jaded about relationships- and commitment-phobic- and doesn't want anything more from Jason than a relationship where they just "want to be together. In a sense, David evolves into a "Mark," and Jason comes along as the new "David" about to get the same treatment that David originally did.

I liken A Very Natural Thing" to be a primitive "All Over The Guy." The story shows a vicious cycle about relationships that both gay and straight people can relate to and presents some universal truths about how gays feel about themselves being a minority group and their self-destructive tendencies due to limitations society puts on them. These are circumstance that are still very relevant today.

The ending of the film is very open-ended and doesn't resolve any of the issues the movie brings up as there are no answers for the questions this film raises. That is actually what gives the film relevancy today given the current debate on same-sex marriage (especially with the flick's marriage scene), which has the potential of breaking the "glass ceiling" on the limitations of how gay relationships can evolve and how gays can feel about themselves.

Ok! The hair styles and clothes are dated, but it's not too hard to get past. Just concentrate on the characters and the storyline/dialogue in relation to the plots you see in most current films and today's current events and this film will feel as relevant and "run-of-the-mill" as any film made in 2003, but very "visionary" and "ground-breaking" for 1973!

4 out of 5 stars A pioneering effort with integrity.......2003-03-01

The criminal presidential administration of Richard Nixon had pushed the country as close to civil implosion as it had been since the Civil War, and the Stonewall raid was only five years ago in 1974 when "A Very Natural Thing" was released. Largely because of the far larger civil crisis ignited by Watergate and a virtually non-existent gay rights movement, it is little surprise that "A Very Natural Thing" didn't gain the attention it deserved. While it wasn't the first gay-themed film, it was the first to depict gays as real people with real feelings and dreams and didn't degrade homosexuals as a couple of contemporary films like "The Boys From Brazil" and "The Boys in the Band." Here, David (Robert Joel), a priest, is forced to abandon his service to God because of his homosexuality. Enter Mark (Curt Gareth), and he and David develop a relationship. But it's imperiled by their differences about just what a relationship should be about. As David and Mark continue to disagree and, as a result, begin to drift apart emotionally, David meets Jason (Bo White), but the former's fear of emotional distance threatens a hoped-for relationship with Jason. We won't give the solution away other than it is honest and speaks to contemporary relationships. The film does feature some explicit sex scenes with frontal nudity, but the scenes are not gratuitous and come off as being integral to the plot. Considering gay films were not in vogue in 1974, "A Very Natural Thing" is scantily produced with less-than-perfect picture quality and sound. That aside, the film truly is classic and still relevant in its honest and respectful treatment of gays are real people with real feelings and real dreams.

5 out of 5 stars A Groundbreaking & Controversial Film Ahead of Its Time.......2003-01-17

1974 was an interesting year: President Richard M. Nixon imposed national 55 mph speed limits, he later resigned his presidency over the Watergate scandal, Turkey invaded Cyprus, Scelbi Computer Consulting was the first company ever to advertise a personal computer (the Scelbi), and Christopher Larkin produced, directed and wrote his only film, a groundbreaking & controversial film entitled "A Very Natural Thing". This film is regarded by many to be first widely distributed mainstream film to depict gay men honestly. Taking place primarily in NYC, "A Very Natural Thing" focuses on the life of David (Robert Joel), a gay man who is forced to leave the priesthood over his sexuality. One night at a bar with his friend Alan (Jay Pierce), he meets Mark (Curt Gareth). A romance develops between David and Mark, but problems develop because of their different views of what a committed relationship should be. David later meets Jason (Bo White, also known for his portrayal of Adam in the 1974 film "Bible!") during a gay pride march, but the emotional problems that David had with Mark could hamper a relationship between them.

At only 80 minutes, "A Very Natural Thing" may seem short, but the story portrayed is just as meaningful now as it was in 1974. Were it not for the mid-1970's fashions and hairstyles (which some may find dated), you might think you were watching a contemporary film. Picture quality is not great since the film was shot on a low budget, but I have seen several contemporary independent films with much worse quality. Aside from that, there are many memorable scenes in in the film including seeing David & Mark rolling down a hill together in Central Park and seeing David & Jason rollicking in the ocean on the shore of Cape Cod. The most controversial scenes in the film for 1974 are the love scenes between naked men.

Certainly, the film is not flawless, but for 1974 this was a groundbreaking film that clearly demonstrated what a film about gay characters could be. For that reason, and for being an engaging film, I give this film a rating of 5 stars. If you decide not to purchase a copy of the film, I highly recommend renting it to see it at least once.

    Product Description

When you hear the words "stage play," you immediately think of Shelly Garrett. He has become the number one playwright in history, when it comes to comedy theatre. Since March, 2002, he has been touring with his most recent play, "I'm Doing The Right Thing With The Wrong Man." Performances here in Dallas will run October 24-27, which includes six shows at the Majestic Theater, Downtown Dallas. So far, the show has sold out in every city, which includes Indianapolis, Baltimore, Detroit and Atlanta. The play is about a small time college coach, who manages to get a huge contract to coach the Atlanta Falcons. Afterwards, his entire personality changes. His overnight success leads him into committing adultery. He becomes disrespectful to his wife, who had always been by his side. This show, just like all of Garrett's plays is definitely filled with laughter. The role of the "coach" will make you angry, however, it does have a very touching ending.

Terrible play never seen such a waste of time and money.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2005-08-26

This stage play has a plot with a hidden message. The acting was so bad I actually thought they were trying to be bad actors. I was in the mood to be entertained and was very disappointed. The possible problem with this play was low budget. If I had seen it in person I might have a different opinion. I will not recommend this to anyone...not even an enemy.

1 out of 5 stars the wrong thing to buy if you're christian.......2005-04-28

I thought I was purchasing a gospel play, not so. If the acting was not bad enough, the cursing is random and irrelevant to what's going on. I was very dissapointed. I usually give benefit of the doubt, but Garrett gets 1 star.

    3 out of 5 stars Meh.......2005-05-01

I saw this movie on Sci Fi last night, and it was better than I espected. Though dull and boring later in the film, the movie's intriguing character makkes up for it. Plus, the special effects are not that bad. BUT, it was a good call to not put it in theaters. The listt below will sum up most of the good and bad things about the movie.

    GOOD
    Not bad special effects
Man Thing looks a little better in the movie than he does in the comics
    Interesting ending
    Classic movie scare scenes
Good job on Man Thing details

    BAD
    Slow paced
    Sometimes choppy writing
Not enough Man Thing(you wait an hour to even get a glimpse of him)
This Man Thing is not even Man Thing! They have nothing in common, I mean.
Too many Man Thing close ups
    Man Thing's head looks funny

Just watched it during its premiere on Sci Fi. Now itll get the DVD release on June 14th. Not a bad movie but not worth the 25 plus dollars amazon wants :(

5 out of 5 stars Will absolutely be a good movie!.......2004-07-13

Well, I just found out that Man Thing will come out in Sept. 3 and I can't wait. This probably won't be an origin story beause Man Thing will already exist. Although it has a budget of only 30 million it won't dissapoint people because The Punisher had the same budget and look what a good movie it was. Anyways I can'twait for this movie to come out and is certain that it will be a hit.
