Description

From best-selling author and celebrated director Clive Barker comes a supernatural thriller that rips apart the boundaries between sanity and madness, between the art of illusion and the terrifying forces of magic. With heart-stopping suspense, masterful visual effects (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times) and non-stop terror, it's a riveting journey into the shadowy corners of the human soul. Scott Bakula ( Quantum Leap ) portrays Harry D Amour, a private detective visiting Los Angeles ona routine investigation. Harry gets more than he bargains for when he encounters Philip Swann (Kevin J. O Connor), a performer whose amazing illusions captivate the world. But are they really illusions? Harry isn't so sure as he is thrust into a nightmare of murder, deception and terrifying assaults from the dark beyond.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great build, but disappointing finish.......2007-07-06

Let me start off by saying that I am a fan of Clive Barker's work. He is not my favorite story-teller overall, but I find his imaginative and fantastical writings to be enjoyable and intellectually stimulating. He is no mere horror writer. Having said that, let me begin by stating that this film definitely has a Clive Barker flavor to it... and that's a good thing.

My problem with the movie is that the build-up (or crescendo if you will) is very well done. There is a mystery of sorts, something that the viewer can pretty well figure out, but a larger question that looms over all of the characters throughout. We are being led towards a climax of epic proportions, but once we arrive at the end, we are left very much empty and hungry for something larger. What could have been an epic struggle, a grandiose finalé, is instead a meteoric rise and a quick descent back to earth.

Without ruining anything (in case you have not yet seen it), the film is centered around a private detective (played well by Scott Bakula), who is on the trail of an illusionist called Swann (Kevin J. O'Connor). In the middle of everything is the love interest, Swann's wife (Famke Jansen in her earlier days). The central plot is focused around the world of illusionists and magicians, and the very 'real' difference between illusions and magic. The potential for mischief and mayhem is sadly not utilized as much as it could have been. The story is compelling, though, and the characters are mostly believable.

As far as the special features are concerned, there are your standard commentaries and trailers. Also, there are a few deleted scenes (only about three), but for the most part, the features are rather light. No matter, the real meat of the disc is in the film.

Despite the rather disappointing ending, the film is still worth a watch, and if you are interested in magic, illusionists, horror, mystery, suspense, or anything by Clive Barker, I would venture to say this might be a keeper for your collection. You might consider a rental first, though. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A good buy.......2007-01-11

I bought this for my husband and had never watched it before. Its a good movie with a good plot. It keeps you intrested and has some parts that make you do a double take. Its not really scary but its susupenseful but it is not for young children. At least ones that are used to horror films. There were parts that it lagged in but it was quickly picked up again. Plus it ends the way you want it too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Thriller.......2006-12-13

I really enjoyed this film. I have been wanting to purchase it for sometime and I am very glad that I finally did. It is full of suspense and has alot of plot twists in the movie as well. I did watch the special features section of "deleted scenes" and felt that there were some deleted scenes that should have stayed in the final cut of this movie. Scott Bakula was a very strong actor in this movie as well as everyone else. I highly recommend this movie for anyone that likes a "classic" horror film.

4 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD SUPERNATURAL DETECTIVE STORY!.......2006-10-06

Clive Barkers "Lord of Illusions," is a very good, and very suspenseful supernatural horror film. The story begins with a private detective based in New York, named Harry D'Amour (Scott Bakula). Harry's usual assortment of P.I. work usually deal with the paranormal. While still recuperating [mentally] from his last assignment, he is hired to look into a man whose so-called disability is being questioned. The man is in L.A., and Harry follows him everywhere. However, when the man enters a Tarot reading shop, he rushes out. When Harry enters the shop he discovers a man that is being tortured by someone for information. As the torturer flees, he is able to get information about why this has occured to the palm reader. Harry discovers that the man was once a former member of a cult.

Therefore, because of his credentials, he is hired by the wife of a famed illusionist named Swan (Kevin J. O'Conner). The job entails working for a well-known illusionist's wife named Dorothea (Famke Janssen). Part of the job leads him to discover that members of a cult the illusionist once belonged to are being systematically killed. Moreover, some of the cult members are doing this. Something goes terribly wrong, however, when the illusionist is supposedly killed. The illusionist, Swan (Kevin J. O'Conner) has a secret past. A past that he wishes to remain a secret forever. Events that occurred 13 years prior in the illusionist's life is very dark indeed.

Swan was once a member of a fanatical cult. The leader of the cult, Nix, (Daniel von Bargen) has disappeared. I won't give you the details and spoil it for you. However, as Harry delves deeper into Swan's past he discover's that Swan and the former cult members who are being killed have a secret they wish to keep secret. Moreover, these fanatical cult members of Nix, are awaiting his return. Therefore, members of this cult who left it are being killed. The film is very suspenseful and does keep the viewer engaged in the film. The film works on many levels, and I always thought the film was underrated. Highly recommended, it is a good watch. 3 out of 5 stars Not Barker's best.......2006-08-19

Aside from the names of a few characters, this movie has almost nothing to do with "The Last Illusion", the Clive Barker story that it's supposedly based on. That being said it's still a decent movie, it definatly has the look and feel of a Barker movie. If you're a fan of Hellraiser and/or Nightbreed you'll probably enjoy this movie but I'd definatly recomend seeing those two over this.

The film is very suspenseful and does keep the viewer engaged in the film. The film works on many levels, and I always thought the film was underrated. Highly recommended, it is a good watch.
