And sometimes they come back... for the franchise! Aaaaaaaaargh! Though a TV movie franchise is a somewhat subliminal thing. This double-feature DVD contains one movie based on a story by Stephen King, and another movie based loosely on the first movie. More of a variations on a theme than a continuance. In Sometimes They Come Back, Tim Matheson is made to relive a boyhood tragedy that claimed the life of his brother when the group of bullies who waylaid him in a train tunnel way back when come back from the dead to settle an old score. Convincingly scary as this is, side B is even better, having upped the ante from the demonic bullies of the first movie to the satanic worshippers of the second. This time it's Michael Gross who needs to learn that you can't escape your past, having as a kid thwarted the satanists who claimed the life of his sister, and who lately have returned to kill his mother and are now after his daughter. The effects are great here, with a standout being the formation of a demon from a pool of blood. One of the Arquette clan, Alexis Arquette, as head of the satanic ritualists (Vinnie Barbarino meets Marilyn Manson), is a kind of special effect all by himself, grinning and mugging with uncontained glee at the most splatter-heavy moments. I purchased this product thinking it was both movies on one DVD but when it arrived in the mail it was only "Sometimes They Come Back." I reordered the item thinking it was a mistake with shipping and received the same item again. This was the first time I've ever been through something like this with a Amazon purchase and I'm very DISAPPOINTED!

I bought the movie and it claims that there are two movies included. Sometimes they come back and Sometimes they come back again. When I received the movie it was only the movie Sometimes they come back. So don't be disappointed when you think you are getting 2 and only get 1.

***I wanted to let you all know that Amazon made good on the mistake and reimbursed me half of the price. I did not expect or want the refund I just wanted people to know that it was only 1 movie.

Let not my review be biased because Vinnie Vincent (Vinnie "The Viper" Corey in the story) is HOT!!!!!!!!! I have found my love for 50s Greasers! But that aside, the movie had a simple, ghostly plot but had some careful planning and creepy scenes. Fun, funny, hip, and horrific. With little violence and no sexual content, this film has your basic ghostly feel. Creative with likeable, believable characters. Sorry Stephen King, but this movie did improve your version (found in "Night Shift").

Sometimes They Should Leave Well Enough Alone.......2005-12-27

I suppose there is no harm in ordering this two-movie set, since it seems to be the same price as the first movie alone, but it might be better not to bother, as the second movie kind of spoils the tighter plot line of the first. If I could I would give the first movie 4 stars (5 if you love the genre) and the second one star (zero if you like Stephen King).

The first movie is based on a King short story in the compilation "Night Shift." It is a nicely done tale in the vein of the revenge drama, where those who have a grudge against someone return to wear down and destroy their antagonist. In that sense, "Sometimes They Come Back" has a dramatic core familiar from "Kiss of Death" or "Cape Fear," both movies where a resentful and psychotic gangster returns to destroy the person who they blame for their imprisonment. In "Sometimes" three kids who harassed the protagonist as a child and killed his brother return from the dead to avenge themselves for their own deaths, which occurred accidentally in the old incident.

The movie interprets the King story quite nicely. The changes made to the last third of the short story don't take too much away from the original ending, and in some ways add to it.

But "Sometimes They Come Back Again" comes from the "we made money from the first, let's see if we can squeeze out a few extra nickels" school of film writing. The story tries to borrow the same three characters (or ones that look like them) with a different plot line. It brings in Satanism, a boring mysterious priest, a little satanic cheesecake, and a plot that might have made a 30-minute TV show. At the end it uses part of the ending of the original King story out of context, where it should have been left well enough alone. The most frightening part of the movie is where they leave room open at the end for another sequel. I shuddered.

My teenaged daughter, who likes both horror stories and Stephen King, turned it off midway through. "Don't you even want to see how it turns out?" I asked. "No." Enough said.

The Sometimes They Come Back series of made-for-cable-TV movies proceed from a common idea, lifted from a short story of the same name by Stephen King. Something happened in our protagonist's past, a challenge or crucial test of courage or resolve that he couldn't meet, maybe because of immaturity or some inner defect. Now, usually through a supernatural agency, preferably of satanic origin, that threat from the past that's been haunting our hero all these years has returned to give him another shot at it. Or to force him to deal with it directly. That's pretty much how it plays out in the first film and the second, Sometimes They Come Back... Again. Now comes the third variation, More. But it's really Less. The setting is Antarctica, Ice Station Erebus, where a CIA outpost is experiencing high casualties from an unknown source. In drop a couple of soldiers, one of whom, our hero Captain Sam Cage, turns out to be the target of the piece, whose past is at the center of the present deaths. Nothing really makes much sense here, including the action-packed ending that will have you saying things like, "Why did that work?" and "The babe who's bathed in white light is named Mary, I get it! sometimes they come back was a classic horror movie but with a sense of style that makes you question wether its just a horror or somthing else. it ended and it ended well, king wrote no sequels. now pet cemetary 2 was good and all but whats with the sequels. make a good movie and let it be. dont start adding sequels till the ideas just stupid.

This movie has to have some of the worst outside snow scenes in cinematic history---you can't tell anything what's going on. Inside, things are not a whole lot better, but this thriller does have some unexpected plot twists, including one with Max Perlich who portrays the resident pain in the neck. Clayton Rohner in the lead tries hard, but can't overcome the script's many discrepancies. Emmy-winner Faith Ford looks completely lost in her role as Jennifer, the doctor, and Chase Masterson as Rohner's sidekick gives her Sigourney Weaver imitation. Damian Chapa as Schilling possesses a nasty smarm that belies his good looks.
Not a total waste, but you might want to rent it in lieu of buying.

It's The Thing from Hell instead of Another World........2002-06-01

Loosely connected sequel to Sometimes They Come Back and Sometimes They Come Back Again plays the Thing from Another World game as a military rescue team (of only two people!?!) is dispatched to an Antartic drilling station. Seems the miners broke through to hell...and something wants out. For low budget schlock this plays fairly well, no real surprises, but director Daniel Zelik Berk manages to craft an eerie moment or two amongst all the to be expected satanic hokum.

"Sometimes They Come Back" is a wonderful movie if you're into ghosts. You get a definate feel for the actor's feelings and frustrations as he slowly sinks into what he believes to be madness. (After all, ghosts don't exist, right?) The end makes you wonder, would you really say no to the light?
