Description

Robin Harris is arguably the original king of comedy, as we know it today. His delivery, style, stage presence and unabashed sense of comedy has touched every African-American comic to debut after him. Enjoy the comedic genius that was taken from us far too soon in "We Don't Die, We Multiply - The Robin Harris Story," as Martin Lawrence, Bernie Mac, Cedric the Entertainer and other comedic greats give credit to Robin Harris for being the visionary that influenced their careers.

this is a Very Good Collection&Rememberence of a Great Comedian who died far too young. Robin Harris was on the Cusp of just about exploding big time when His Death came so all of a sudden. this Documentary has Other Comdians such as Bernie Mac,Dl Hughley,Joe Torry, Cedric the Entertainer&Other folks including Robin's Wife,Son,Step Son,brother,Friends,etc.... paying there Respects to the Man's Greatness on stage&How He was as a person. Be Be's Kids will Never be forgotten. I wanted more footage on him&that is my only knock.but when you watch Def comedy Jam&other shows alot of things are owed to what Robin Harris did so well. the Jerri Curl Drip was always my favorite. follow the drip, follow the drip, follow the drip. RIP to a Brother who Brought it to the Stage&Would make your sides hurt from laughing. Robin Harris kept it Black&Real on stage.

5 out of 5 stars SMALL WORLD!!!!.......2006-10-20

Okay, if you know Robin Harris' work, you get the title of this review. If not, see this DVD and you will. Everything you wanted to know about Robin Harris but were afraid to ask. Informtion about his family, rare early clips from juke joints of his standup up to and including the classic HBO ONE NIGHT STAND which introduced him and BEBE's KIDS (like Abbott and Costello is to WHO'S ON FIRST, Bill Cosby is to FAT ALBERT, and Richard Pryor is to MUDBONE..you get the idea). beyond the Chitlin Circuit juke joints of the ghettos (where he built his following the hard way) to mainstream American stardom.

The only thing that's missing are clips from his film appearances in HOUSE PARTY, DO THE RIGHT THING, and HARLEM NIGHTS, but what we have here will suffice. This is raw, uncut African-American comedy with considerable intelligence for the genre and Harris was the personification of the street-corner trash talker and philosopher with a microphone. He was the type of guy you could smell cheap whiskey on his breath while reading Socrates.

Robin Harris was poised to be the King of Comedy and the heir to Richard Pryor's throne in the late 80s and early 90s. Like Pryor, he mixed the profane and the profound in a mannner all his own-unlike many of the trash talking curseaholics who rose from the sewer in his wake. Harris also brought back (for a while) something missing in so much of comedy today-the art of storytelling and imagination. All of these aspects of his style and personality are captured in this EXCELLENT set.

Some really touching moments with Harris' surviving wife and son. The scene where the teenaged son performs comedy at Robin senior's old club juxtapositioned with film of his late father may seem morbid at first, but it has the family's consent which makes it heartwarming, as is Robin Jr.'s rap to the memory of Robin Sr. (who sadly died before his son was born).

In a way, this DVD is somewhat theraputic. At first, it seems tragic and senseless that a man at the peak of his fame at age 36 should die so untimely of natural causes and leaving a family behind. But it reminds you that, as Frederick Douglass said, "Where there's life-there's hope" and that we should appreciate the very fact that we are alive.

Parents be warned-our man could lay down some cursing on this CD, but he uses it in reserve and its not too gross for teenagers on up.

5 out of 5 stars The best introduction to this pioneering stand-up comedian.......2006-10-14

Robin was a true pioneering comic--a loving mix of Redd Foxx, Don Rickles and Richard Pryor, he was on the verge of superstardom (he was being courted as the original host of Def Comedy Jam and had 3 films in development), when he died suddenly of sleep apnea at the age of 36 in 1991. This documentary, lovingly produced and directed by Topper Carew, his former manager and co-creator of the MARTIN show is the definitive portrait of the late comedian. It contains rare footage of Robin performing at the Comedy Act Theater (that is not duplicated in the other recently released Robin DVD) as well as interview footage filmed by Carew on the night of his final performance in his hometown of Chicago. Endorsed by the Harris estate, it include footage with Harris' wife and only son (who was not yet born at the time of his dad's untimely death) and interviews with a parade of comics who Robin opened the door for. Perhaps the best thing about this DVD is that it contains nearly the entire HBO ONE NIGHT STAND as a bonus feature including the famous BE-BE's KIDS routine. Dollar-for-Dollar, this dwarfs the previously released Robin Harris Live DVD by galaxies. If you are a fan of comedy, you owe it to yourself to add this DVD to your cart and buy it today. Along with Spike Lee's THE ORIGINAL KINGS OF COMEDY and REDD FOXX--ON LOCATION, this is next generation African-American stand-up at it's rawest, uncompromised best.

An attractive young woman is driving her car on a dark country road and singing along to the radio. She's running out of gas and so she pulls into a gas station (run by a jittery, stuttering Brad Dourif), but then flees what seems to be an attack, only to find the real threat in her backseat: a hooded killer with an ax who takes her head off with a well-aimed swing. You've heard the story before? Not surprising, given that it's one of the more famous urban legends borrowed for Urban Legend, a post-Scream exercise in self-referential horror. The students at an ivy-covered New England college are turning up dead, the victims of a serial killer who murders in the fashion of the "apocryphal" modern myths. It's all for the benefit of good girl with a dark secret Alicia Witt, the sole witness to most of the killings. Doe-eyed Rebecca Gayheart, as her gullible best friend, and Jared Leto, the ambitious campus journalist who tracks down the secret that hangs over the school, lead a cast of pretty young women, hunky guys, and campus characters, notably the suspicious professor Robert Englund, a genre legend in his own right as the star of seven Nightmare on Elm Street films. Take away the cheeky remarks and self-awareness and it's a throwback to the 1970s' rash of teen slasher movies, where sexually active teens are sliced, diced, and otherwise slaughtered in elaborate and ingenious ways. The increasingly preposterous film is no Scream, but the modestly stylish production has its moments. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A decent "whodunnit" slasher, but the ending is lame........2007-08-27

"Urban Legend" is similar to the movie "Scream". Both movies are pretty good "whodunnit" slashers that contain classic slasher movie twists. "Urban Legend" is about a group of students at a college where a terrible murder took place about twenty-five years ago. Our brilliant little students start getting killed off one by one by a killer using every slasher cliche imaginable, thus the name "Urban Legend". There are plenty of "red herrings" to go around in this flick to keep the audience guessing, and everything goes fairly well until the unrealistic conclusion where everything is supposedly revealed.

Indeed, like "Scream", the problem with "Urban Legend" is the ridiculous ending when the killer is actually revealed, although I did find "Scream" to be better simply because it was more intricate and had better acting, but that's not saying much. When the killer is revealed and the ending begins to take form, the movie comes off rather ridiculous and lacking in credibility. As with "Scream", the ending of "Urban Legend" brings this movie down quite a few notches, not that it was that good to begin with. Acting, directing and production values are decent for this type of flick. "Urban Legend" does have some entertainment value for its typical slasher format and mystery killer, but it's not a good horror movie. However, if you like modern slashers, it might be worth a rent.

1 out of 5 stars you must be joking?.......2007-05-03

it amazes me the amount of movie lovers who think films such as this one deserve anything more than one star....honestly that whole cliched genre of Scream, I Know What you Did Last Summer, etc. are at the very lowest denominator of talent and cinema. They are the repulsive section of Hollywood that lack any emotional creativity in all its forms, and the movie going public that place Happy Gilmore and Mean Girls on their top ten list, and with IQ's less than 20, are the ones who make films like these gross the amount of money they do.

There is NOTHING, mediocre, or even 'fair' about Urban Legend. It sinks beneath the yoke and is one of the worst films ever created. Pure excrement.

4 out of 5 stars Delivers what it promises...that's good enough for me!.......2007-01-12

Surprisingly scary, `Urban Legend' does the post-Scream teen slasher flick justice, coupling young talent with genuine scares and believable tension. Sure, there are some preposterous scenes in the film, and once you find out who the killer is you'll probably end up scratching your head and wondering how [insert name here] was ever able to commit the heinous murders and, in true slasher fashion, why it's so hard to kill our killer in the end, but the intensity and originality of the film far outweigh these minor faults. The idea of having a murdering going around killing people after the same urban legends we all love to fear is genius, and thankfully here they got it right (although both sequels failed to live up to this films edge).

Like almost every other slasher film we have our heroine (Alicia Witt), the pretty girl who's not necessarily popular but far from an outcast...and she's carrying a dark secret which no one but the killer is aware. She has the pretty athletic best friend (Rebecca Gayheart), the disturbing gothic roommate (Stephanie Mills)...there's the obnoxious party guy (Michael Rosenbaum), the horny preppy (Joshua Jackson), the sexed up hot girl (Tara Reid) and the quiet journalist vying for her affection and secret (Jared Leto). And we can't forget the token black character, this time in the form of Security Guard Reese Wilson (Loretta Devine who all but steals the show).

In this film Natalie (Witt) is rightfully shocked when her friend Michelle (Natasha Gregson Wagner) is murdered (that infamous backseat beheading everyone was talking about) but her shock turns into fear as she realizes she may be next (or most likely last). As her friends and associates in general all start dying, each one being picked off one by one carrying out different urban legends she tries, with the help of her best friend Brenda (Gayheart) and aspiring journalist Paul (Leto) to uncover the killer before it's too late. With unique and impressive death scenes, genuine scares and an overall original prose, `Urban Legend' succeeds in creating pure entertainment and is worth it's weight. It may not be `Scream' but who asked it to be?!?!

5 out of 5 stars A Scary Slasher Flick With a Cool Twist.......2006-10-27

Jared Leto (Paul), Alicia Witt (Natalie), Rebecca Gayheart (Brenda), Michael Rosenbaum (Parker), Joshua Jackson (Damon), Tara Reid (Sasha), and Natasha Wagner (Michelle) star in this well-conceived film about urban legends.

In the opening sequence, Michelle is driving her SUV back to campus. Realizing she's low on gas, she pulls into a service station. The attendant is acting rather strangely, and for some reason, he asks Michelle to get out of the SUV. He immediately tries to restrain Michelle, but she sprays him with mace, gets back in her vehicle, and speeds away. Chillingly, the attendant yells "someone is in the back seat!". Sure enough, an axe-weilding figure emerges from Michelle's back seat and kills her.

The rest of the movie takes place at Pendleton University. The students are involved in a Folklore class taught by Prof. William Wexler (Robert Englund). Wexler entertains his class with stories of urban legends, which includes Pendleton's own urban legend about an Abnormal Psychology teacher who murdered six students at Stanley Hall twenty-five years earlier. Eventually, the students learn of Michelle's death, and Natalie begins to suspect that a killer is on campus. Meanwhile, Paul has written a story about Michelle's murder which has infuriated the administration, especially Dean Adams (John Neville). He is subsequently thrown off the paper, but he continues with his investigation.

The murders continue, and, strangely, each has taken on the theme of an urban legend. One by one, the group of students is killed off by the maniacal killer with gruesome effect; Parker dies by having draino poured down his throat, Damon is strung up from a tree, and Sasha is chased around the campus radio station with the microphone still on so everyone can hear her screams.

Natalie tells Brenda that she and Michelle were responsible for the death of a teenage boy when they were in high school by driving with their lights off and waiting for someone to flash them. When the first vehicle flashed them, they turned around and chased the car until it ran off the road. The driver didn't survive.

Soon, Natalie realizes that she and her friends are becoming part of the killer's own urban legend; the story of their own deaths. Will anyone survive, or will the killer succed in making urban legends out of them all?

This is a very good movie with an excellent and well-conceived plot, but the best part is the teriffic twist at the end. It is totally surprising, but when all of the details are revealed, the ending will make perfect sense.

I highly recommend this great horror movie. The plot is scary and suspenseful, and the ending will definitely surprise you. Watch and see some great urban legends and a thrilling ending, too.

4 out of 5 stars A great premise that delivers what it promises........2006-09-21

The movie "Scream" has an awful lot to answer for really. The amount of teenager packed, pop culture filled horror movies that have been released in its wake is astonishing. Movies such as "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Urban Legend" are a direct response to the above movies success. Each involves fantastic looking people being killed one by one by an unknown executioner. They manage to include sex, comedy and popular music and the audience are subjected to cliche scenarios and inevitable twists and turns. It would be so very easy to just dismiss them all as redundant, money making exercises, but to be honest, when they're done well they are thoroughly entertaining despite the obvious plot holes, unrealistic acting and overuse of cheap scares. "Urban Legend" is a very good case in point.

When students at a fictional university are being slaughtered one by one, it becomes apparent that the killer is using common urban legends to take each of them out. The movie starts with a young woman having her head cut off by someone that had been hiding in the backseat of her car. It's a very effective scene utilizing a story most viewers would have been told at some point, with great camera angles, a thunderstorm to create the appropriate atmosphere and a suitably creepy Brad Dourif whom makes it work. You know what you're in for from this point onwards and while not all the scenarios work as well as this opening they are all reasonably well done. Over the course of the film, the creators manage to make just about every single member of the cast appear to be the assassin. A combination of red herrings and coincidences regularly come into play to confuse and sidetrack. I must admit that the first time I saw the film I had no idea who the killer was until it was revealed, which is a credit to the cast and crew involved.

"Urban Legend", as is the case with many modern horror films, doesn't take itself too seriously. There are cliches all over the place which I guess can be excused considering the theme of the film. It's a little difficult to make things seem fresh when most of the film is actually attempting to clone other well known stories. There are a few too many cheap scares for my liking. You know the ones! A girl walks into a dark library and thinks she's alone. She walks slowly around saying "hello, is anyone there?" Then she backs down a corridor only to wander straight into an innocent bystander while the music raises several decibels in an attempt to make the audience jump. Repeat several times throughout the movie and it just becomes really predictable. I guess directors of these horror movies that contain so much comedy really find it hard to build up creepy atmosphere so they simply have to resort to regular little shocks. The movie isn't excessively gory, yet it does include decapitations with axes, people being run over with cars and hangings. There's actually not a lot of blood and most damage occurs slightly off screen. It's also worth noting that a couple of horror legends get some screen time during all the fun. Robert Englund (Freddy Kruger) and the previously mentioned Brad Dourif (voice of Chucky) are welcome inclusions.

Overall I'd have to say "Urban Legend" is an entertaining horror movie with a really great premise. Pretty much none of it is believable (the killer seems to be in two places at once several times and the killer appears to be immortal by the end) but then it really doesn't try to be a serious and realistic film. Its purpose is to give you a fun night in, a few good jolts along with some awesome eye candy for both sexes. I believe it succeeds in exactly what it tries to do and therefore I recommend it for those inclined. You know who you are.

4 out of 5 stars Dude's Got The Goods!.......2007-06-12

John Legend is an amazingly wonderful talented brother! This DVD will not disappoint his fans as he performs almost all of the songs from the Get Lifted disc. Legend is vision in white as he takes the stage for this almost 90 minute set which showcases his strong and raspy vocals along with his skill at the piano. He keeps his audience hyped as they sing along with him, shouting the choruses, and breaking into huge applause as Kanye West and Snoop Dogg make guest appearances. Legend and his band are great performers and do Get Lifted great justice with the live versions of the songs, but Legend is clearly at his best when it's just his vocals and the piano. His renditions of Ordinary People and Again, from the Once Again CD are nothing short of magical. His reggae twist of Used To Love You is a treat, as well. This live DVD is a good addition to your DVD collection, but to truly understand what is special about this young man, you have to see him live.

I really enjoyed the Songs that John did by himself. All the background singers and band members seemed to draw the attention away from his vocals. I debated on whether to give it 3 stars or 4 and I finally decided on 4 because he sings so well and the lyrics stir you. The Blu Ray edition looks beautiful in High Definition, and it sounds superb. They did a good job packaging this DVD full of beautiful songs. If you enjoyed hearing John Legend on CD or on the Radio, check out this Well edited, well shot film.

Description

Despite all the evidence, millions around the world continue to blame the Jews for 9/11. This belief is a modern-day incarnation of the infamous "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," the century-old forgery that some people claimed to be the Jews' master plan to rule the world. Filmmaker Marc Levin sets out to understand why "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" has been revived, and to challenge one of the most persistent, insidious conspiracy theories of all time. In the course of his explosive journey, Levin finds himself delving into the heart of hate, facing those who would traffic in bigotry, all in the name of God.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Disconcerting.......2007-05-19

I am a big fan of the genre, and I can say without qualification that this is a very well-made documentary. The subject matter is both chilling and mystifying. Marc Levin demonstrates that no matter how many times they've been debunked the "Protocols" continue to be cited by anti-Semites old and new, domestic and international. Following 9/11 the manufacture of new myths surrounding the Jews gives us, through Levin's lens, a fascinating if disturbing opportunity to witness the development of this kind of lie first-hand. It is a briskly made film with its fair share of humor, but it definitely leaves you with something less than a smile on your face. I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars The Hidden Hypocricy.......2007-04-10

All the while this film bemoans anti-Semitism, Marc Levin's father has the nerve to downgrade the Catholic Church by making fun of the sign of the cross. Some people in this world can't take it but they can dish it out! Anti-Semitism is horrid, but I have no sympathy for double-tongued people.

2 out of 5 stars Give me a Break.......2007-03-10

Imagine a movie that starts with a premise that racism still exists in the United States. In order to prove this, they go and find the nastiest, sleaziest white supremicists they can find, and stick them in front of the camera.

That's what this film does with anti-semitism. It talks about a document called the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and examines it in detail. This document is discredited and is believed only by the kooks and flakes of the world. And it's those flakes that this film goes to great pains to seek out and interview.

And so Levin "proves" that there is rampant antisemitism in the United States. Whatever.

1 out of 5 stars Nearly Unwatchable.......2007-01-31

Ever Again was not a particularly well done documentary, but it's a work of genius compared to this drivel. It seems most of the other reviewers have been soft on this film because it is against the evil of Antisemitism. This film fails to make a coherent argument. The director jumps from scene to scene with no flow or direction. There are numerous tangents that go nowhere. The director likes to hear himself talk and ends up in verbal fights with idiots while he spouts stupid platitudes. Worst of all, the director seems to believe in a great all encompassing corporate conspiracy not much different than that expoused by The Protocols.

4 out of 5 stars Hard view.......2006-11-02

"Protocols of Zion" takes a somewhat convulted view on modern, post-9/11 anti-Semitism in the world, using the nefarious fabrication of the "Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion" as a template.

Much of the film doesn't reflect much on the actual screed itself, but rather the modern world's Jew hatred. The new anti-Jewish myth is no Jews died at 9/11.

Get ready for some intense dialogue. Ironically, some of the most hateful remarks in the film come from participants in a peace rally. An older man states he'd rather go to hell than be in heaven with "f----" Bush and Cheney. This is opposed to the spokesman from the Natonal Alliance in his tacky red tie speaking plainly about their beliefs and operations. Actually, some of the best, most honest and rational sounding people in the whole film are convicts at a maximum security prison.

One of several scens that bothered me was the interview with young Palestinian-Americans. They were born Americans, but still so wrapped up in the affairs of the "old country." I had to wonder why this was, especially in the wake of so many others, like the Irish, the Poles, the Italians, the Chinese, etc. who worked to become Americans and never looked back. And then hearing these guys start talking like gangstas didn't make the situation any better.

The worst moment was definitely the interview on the Passion with James Carroll. Aside from that, it was worth the look.

Totally love this album. I must confess it was very VERY pleasent surprise when I receive this item and had the DVD with the concert. There is only one thing: I live in Europe and don't think I will be able to see the DVD.... but I also haven't tried. If I'll be able, I hope to have such good result from it as from the CD.

But I must say: the CD is NOT live (as I thought it would be when I purchase it). Nevertheless..... is FABULASTIC!!

5 out of 5 stars I loved it.......2007-05-20

I thought Vincent was awesome in this movie- I was hoping he would be playing Sherlock but he was excellent as the evil Moriarty- the sexiest fiend I have ever seen!

Yeah, the movie was not true to the Sherlock Holmes story but I liked their take on it and it made it more interesting to watch. I was very involved in all the characters. Also it was interesting to think of how heroin came to be.

1 out of 5 stars horrible...........2007-04-27

as someone who is both a huge fan of: a-Sherlock Holmes, and b-Vincent Donofrio, my interest was piqued when I saw this DVD at the local video store. From the cover of the box you would surmise that Vincent Donofrio is playing Holmes. Not so-he's playing Moriarity, and sad to say, very badly.

This film is in no way true to the Holmes stories and so far fetched as a period piece as to be laughable. I got 3/4 thru before I finally quit in disgust. Don't waste your time or money on this production-it's 100 minutes you'll never get back.

0 stars!

3 out of 5 stars A case of heroin.......2007-03-26

The film begins with Holmes (James D'Arcy) in hot pursuit of his archenemy Professor Moriarty (Vincent D'Onofrio). They duel, and Holmes shoots Moriarty, who falls into an open sewer hole. Holmes looks down the hole and sees Moriarty carried away by the rushing sewage and presumes him dead.

This is a problem. No Sherlock Holmes (nay, no reasonable detective) would presume death in the absence of a corpse. Yet Holmes does. Firmly. That he is young should in no way prejudice him.

Holmes ingratiates himself with the public coroner/pathologist, Dr. Watson, by proving insightful during the autopsy of a murder victim. And after that autopsy, he deduces the height of the murderer, along with other "facts", and he even has a name for the person. The Inspector, Watson, Holmes and the police go to the address of the alleged murderer, only to find him hanging in an apparent suicide. Holmes believes it is not a suicide, and eventually comes to believe that Moriarty did not die, and is still alive.

The film introduces us to some novel concepts that never saw the end of Doyle's pen: 1) Holmes had a personal vendetta against Moriarty because Moriarty drugged his brother Mycroft, leaving him so sick that he is all but convalescent; 2) that Mycroft was poisoned by anyone, much less Moriarty; 3) that Moriarty may have been responsible for Holmes's occasional cocaine and morphine use; 4) that Moriarty had an interest in the use of drugs at all.

Still, it's fine to be novel in one's approach.

D'Arcy's Holmes is sexy (so says the Netflix description). He is certainly young. D'Arcy is a fine actor, so it wasn't difficult to imagine his character as a maturing detective - indeed, that is what the filmmakers wanted us to think. The very last scene of the film makes that obvious. But D'Onofrio's Moriarty was confusing. His accent was sub par at best, and with a wealth of British actors to choose from, one wonders at this choice.

The plot is fairly straightforward. Moriarty has stumbled upon heroin, a drug that he seeks to sell both in the colonies and in England. He is taking out his perceived competition, traders in the opium market. While it's difficult to feel too much sympathy for drug dealers meeting a nasty end, it is Moriarty that is doing the killing, of course, and we want to see Holmes carry the day. There is a slight cat and mouse game played, and it is entertaining to watch. This is by no means a great film, but it is good.

It's interesting to note that Moriarty has become greater over time than he was during the writing of the books. He only appeared in, I believe, two books. Yet such is his fame that if Holmes had been chasing anyone but Moriarty in this film, it would not have been interesting to watch.

Description

From director Mary Lambert (Pet Sematary, The In Crowd), the terrifying Urban Legend trilogy comes full circle with URBAN LEGENDS: BLOODY MARY, delivering enough hair-raising scares to rival The Grudge and The Ring. On a prom-night dare, a trio of high-school friends chant an incantation, unleashing an evil spirit from the past with deadly consequences. That same night, the girls are abducted by a gang of high-school jocks. Once rescued, their tormentors receive their just desserts, dying one by one in a chain reaction of gruesome murders, each with a bizarre "Urban Legend" twist. Is it all just a high-school prank taken to grisly extremes - or has "Bloody Mary" returned from the grave to wreak her own vengeance?

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all.......2007-08-21

My girlfriend and I enjoyed this movie. We didn't think it was bad considering the negative reviews. It was better than # 2. Rent first if your worried. Just think of it as a good horror movie and not a sequel (kind of like Halloween 3). Also if your scared of spiders DO NOT WATCH.

2 out of 5 stars bloody mary.......2007-07-29

I love horror movies and I have to admit, Bloody Mary is an urban legend that always terrified me. So I had to see this movie.
Honestly, it was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It was so cheesy and the acting was absolutly terrible. I don't know if I have ever laughed so hard.
So even though I got a good laugh I was extremely disappointed. I was really looking forward to a good horror movie.

2 out of 5 stars Just an Ordinary Horror Film.......2007-05-21

The "Urban Legends" franchise still goes on, with the latest entry featuring the "legend" of "Bloody Mary." According to this film directed by Mary Lambert (known for her two "Pet Semetary" films), the titular Mary really existed in 1969, who is supposedly killed late at night ... well, sort of. Cue to a bunch of high school students, some of whom chants her name three times in the dark room unwittingly to awaken the vengeful dead girl. And they start to be killed in a weird fashion one after another.

As you know, this urban legend was a famous one, previously used in such films as the 1992 horror film "Candyman" (to which Lambert's film refers briefly). Unfortunately, "Urban Legends: Bloody Mary" does not know what it really wants to do. Except for some scenes involving spiders, the film is not creepy enough. It also awkwardly attempts to inject some dark humor into the story, but the film is not just funny, especially after watching more gruesome "Final Destinations" series.

The mysteries of Bloody Mary and her death are not interesting, and the truths about it are predictable for most horror film fans. Not that "Urban Legends: Bloody Mary" is a terrible film, but after all, except for the "Mary" part, this film has little to do with urban legends, and is just an ordinary horror film.

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing .......2007-02-11

The "Urban Legend" franchise has been pretty steady for the past couple of years. I just don't understand why this movie was made. It shifts from the slasher feel of the previous two movies and delves into a more supernatural focus. The film is pretty bad. I'm definitely a huge fan of horror movies and it doesn't take a lot to impress me but this was just mediocre.

The acting is extremely sub-par and this is especially disappointing because Kate Mara is in the cast. She delivered some pretty good roles in "Nip/Tuck" and "Jack & Bobby" but she goes through this movie, along with the rest of the actors in an incoherent storyline that shifts from scene to scene with no depth. It's hard to care about the characters at all. They just float around with seemingly no purpose. I even almost quit watching the movie halfway but being the avid horror fan I am, I had to continue.

There is only one really cool death scene that gave this movie 1 star. It involves a pretty girl and a spider. Most of the rest of the death scenes are just retreads of urban legends the characters talked about in the past two movies. The film even has a cameo scene from "Final Cut" in which a character is watching a porn on the TV.

Overall, not even worth a rental. Luckily for me, I didn't have to waste 3 bucks because it was available for free on my Comcast ON Demand.

4 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2006-06-07

Being a teenager I have grown up watching the Urban Legend movies. I saw the first one and thought it was alright. The second wasn't very good. Bloody Mary for me was very enjoyable. The movie brought something knew to the table. The title "Urban Legend: Bloody Mary" is a mystery to me of why it was chosen. This movie is very much unlike the others and the creators probaly just put Urban Legend in the title to bring more attention towards it. The deaths in the movie are very cool and the acting is not too bad either. The story was somewhat predictable but kept me watching. Overall a good straight to video movie and for how cheap it is, I'd reccomend you buy it.

My spouse likes the Urban Legend series so we ordered them.

3 out of 5 stars Fading Fast.......2006-02-01

I really enjoyed the first film, it had some interesting killings, some humor and a generally original premise. The second one was not as much fun following the same idea. The third seemed like a really bad low budget mess. I would normally say to just pick up the first film, but since it seems to go for over 20 dollars by itself, you might as well pick up a 3 pack for a bit more. You may end up enjoying the 2 sequels more than I did.

4 out of 5 stars Great Horror flicks.......2006-01-14

The 1st one is Excellent, The Second one is BLAHHHH but funny and fun to watch, the third one is better then the second one but not better then the first one lol

4 out of 5 stars An underrated series of slasher films - the original is brilliant.......2005-10-31

I don't think the Urban Legends series gets the attention it deserves. The quality of the films goes down with each sequel (with the third having nothing at all to do with the first two films), but it's still a darn good trio of horror movies. This is a great buy for those who don't already have all three films (especially the first two) in their DVD libraries.

Most of my high regard for the series is due to the original. Far from being a Scream clone, it is one of the most impressive slasher films of recent years, in my opinion. The suspense is sustained throughout, the identification of the killer is handled superbly, and the ending is well-nigh perfect. A serial killer who constructs his/her kills on urban legends - fantastic. Maybe it's not a wholly original idea, but no film had ever taken the premise to the extreme the way Urban Legend did. Among the talented cast, Alicia Witt and Rebecca Gayheart give particularly impressive performances. Gayheart in particular really expanded her acting repertoire with this film. The less talented cast members, as it turns out, were pretty much the first to be dispatched, and this works out well. It's always nice when a particularly annoying character you expect to have to deal with until the end gets offed in the first half hour. All told, I actually consider Urban Legend to be a much more original, shocking, effective film than any of the Scream movies it is invariably compared to. The final revelations of this film, as I have already mentioned, took me completely by surprise, and that really doesn't happen all that often.

Urban Legends Final Cut is a movie about a movie, basically, and this little twist to the classic horror formula plays out rather well. At the country's most distinguished film-making school, the Hitchcock Award for best student movie is the ultimate accomplishment, all but guaranteeing the winner a quick jump to a directing chair in Hollywood. The protagonist, Amy, decides to break away from her documentary roots and produce a horror movie, one in which a serial killer patterns his murders on urban legends. As Amy begins filming, several of her fellow students are murdered, and eventually the killer comes after her. All told, this is a better-than-average slasher film, combining good acting, great special effects, and an actual storyline that doesn't reveal its most important secrets until the very end. The special effects are pretty good, and there is a nice variety to be found in the urban legend-based murders. The movie has its lighter side, as well, obviously not taking itself too seriously. The movie could be considered rather Scream-like, but it has enough character of its own to succeed in its own right - but it's not as good as the original.

Urban Legends - Bloody Mary was a direct-to-video release that really had nothing to do with the first two films. While the film falls far short of its predecessors, Urban Legends - Bloody Mary isn't all that bad, though. It has some definite weaknesses, but it also has a nice sampling of blood and gore. There are many variations on the old Bloody Mary story, but it makes for classic urban legend fare. Look in the mirror, say Bloody Mary's name three times, and she appears - and then the fun begins. Apparently, a mirror isn't actually required after all, as young Samantha Owens conjures the restless spirit without one after hearing the story of a local girl supposedly killed back in 1969 - and disappears until the next day. Those responsible for Samantha's disappearance start dying, in rather gruesome ways, which makes Sam and her brother David (whom some blame for the murders) exceedingly unpopular at school. By about the second murder, the whole urban legend m.o. is applied rather loosely, but there's still the Bloody Mary connection. Samantha comes to believe that the killer is the ghost of Mary and that she is killing the children of those responsible for her death. There's no denying that Urban Legends - Bloody Mary is an exceedingly predictable little film. Mary's killer might as well have walked around with the words "I did it" on his forehead. There are some decent-sized holes in the plot, as well. Still, I enjoyed this movie. The special effects for Bloody Mary herself are pretty good, and the deaths are reasonably gory (although we sometimes only see the aftermath of them). You really have to judge this film on its own merits, though, as it really has next to nothing to do with the first two Urban Legends movies.

While Urban Legends: Final Cut is not nearly as terrifying or inventive as some of its predecessors, the film does offer up a fairly suspenseful whodunit that fans of the teen horror genre will likely appreciate. Amy Mayfield, the film's heroine (played by fresh-faced Jennifer Morrison), is the daughter of an Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker trying to make a name for herself at Alpine University, "the greatest film school that ever existed." Along with several other students she is competing for the coveted Hitchcock award, which virtually guarantees the winner a successful career in Hollywood. When the film school's resident genius and likely winner of the award is found dead, suspicions arise. As other film students are killed off one by one, everyone becomes a suspect. Would someone kill to win the prestigious award?

While striving to be Hitchcockian in theme (as evidenced by its multiple references to the director himself), the film never quite moves beyond cliché. Many scenes are a little too reminiscent of other popular teen horror flicks like Scream (the anonymous masked killer, though not nearly as frightening), The Blair Witch Project (Amy is chased through desolate woods by her stalker), and Friday the 13th (Amy hides from the killer in a lake setting eerily similar to the one where Jason died so many years ago). These elements seem just a little worn out. Morrison gives a serviceable performance, and Loretta Devine, from the original Urban Legend, adds humor as a Foxy Brown-worshiping security guard. The film manages to keep you guessing until its conclusion, and a sequence set in an abandoned amusement park is truly creepy. But ultimately Urban Legends: Final Cut lacks the originality to make a name for itself among the many films of its genre. --Mindy Ruehmann

Description

At the renowned film school Alpine University, one senior student is awarded the esteemed Hitchcock Award for the best thesis film each year. A down-to-earth documentary film student Amy Mayfield wants to take a crack at the Hitchcock. During a chance meeting with the new campus security guard Reese, Amy is inspired by the story of an urban legend at Reese's former place of employment, Pendleton University. Deciding to break away from documentaries, Amy's thesis film will be a work of fiction about urban legends. After writing the script, story boarding the shots and casting her actors, Amy and her crew prepare to roll camera. When Amy's film crew starts falling prey to fatal "accidents," she questions where fiction ends and truth begins. When all the dots start to connect back to her, she realizes she must unmask the killer before she becomes an urban legend.

5 out of 5 stars Really scary........2007-05-23

I wet myself the first time i saw it, it was so horribly bad. You will see some of the most retarded kills in film history as a man kidnaps a girls kidneys and feeds them to his dogs, a coathanger killer, and a professor stalking people around with a fencing mask on. He beats a guy to death with a CAMERA LENS. I MEAN COME ON PEOPLE, WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN THIS MOVIE. And the ending puts movies like eight legged freaks to shame.

1 out of 5 stars dont waste your money.......2007-04-19

OK THE FIRST ONE WAS AWESOME.....BUT THIS ONE WELL IT JUST SUCKED. THERE WAS NO PLOT TO THIS MOVIE. AND AT TIMES IT WAS CONFUSING. SOMETIMES MOVIES ARENT MEANT TO HAVE A SEQUEL. WELL THIS WAS ONE OF THOSE MOVIES. ITS NOT WORTH YOUR 2 HOURS.

1 out of 5 stars Urban Legends, The worst movie..........2006-12-21

I really enjoyed the first urban legends movie, but this one I was not impress by at all. I wish I would have taken these reviews more seriously that I read before buying this dvd. This was an awful cheapo urban legends movie. Theres nothing here to come close of where the first urban legends was. I see now theres a third urban legends movie out, im not sure if that ones good or bad, like this one. If you have a couple of bucks to blow, go ahead and get this one. If you seriously want a good atleast kinda scary movie, look else where.

P.S. No wonder this dvd is only $9.00 bucks

1 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not in a scary way.......2006-09-10

This movie was awful. One of my friends called me up and asked me to pick up a movie. I thought she said pick up a funny or scary movie. So I picked Urban Legends thinking that this would be a good horror flick. She actually said pick a funny movie like "scary movie," the hilarious spinoff of scary movies. Well turns out she got what we wanted because Urban legends-Final Cut was a pretty funny movie to watch. We spent most of the time laughing at the stupid characters and weak plot then hiding our faces behind pillows. Probably not worth watching if you want to see a good horror flick.

2 out of 5 stars Final Cut??.......2006-03-05

Being the sequel to Urban Legends, we expect alot from this movie. I actually give it 2 1/2 stars for I have seen sequels that were much worse than this one. This version takes place at a film school university. With the best film award at stake, and a murder taking place ( the person who was most likely to win ), everyone becomes a suspect. But now no one is safe. There is some gore which adds to the movie and some suspense. Overall, not a boring movie like many other movies I've seen. It's worth watching if you are a fan of the original Urban Legends.
