One of the loopiest kung-fu movies ever made, a garish masterpiece of martial kitsch by the hard-boiled master of the genre, Chang Cheh. The five muscle-bound paragons of the title have fighting skills so hyperdeveloped that they border upon the occult, each modeled on the behavior of a different venomous beast: centipede, snake, lizard, toad, and scorpion. This "poison clan" is embroiled in a complex plot to lay claim to an ill-gotten fortune, but the story line feels like an afterthought. The nonstop wall-crawling action sequences, which match up the cast members in every conceivable combination, are the be all and end all here. This is late, decadent Chang Cheh, without the poise and sweep of earlier epics like Blood Brothers and Vengeance (the noble David Chiang-Ti Lung team ups that inspired John Woo), but it's great fun on its own terms. The painted masks worn by the Venoms, which make them look like berserk extras in a wrestling film, are based upon the belligerent warrior face paint of Chinese opera. --David Chute

Description

The dying master of the powerful Poison Clan dispatches his last pupil on a crucial mission. Worried that the skills he has taught are being used to evil ends, he orders the Yan Tieh to trace a retired colleague and warn him that the fortune he amassed from the clan activities is under threat from five of his former pupils. Each an expert in his own lethal combat style, the five comprise a truly invincible force. Yan must discover the whereabouts and true identities of these deadly masked warriors and decide which, if any, can be trusted.

Just another of the many illegal bootlegs sold on Amazon, no wonder legit DVD companies have trouble making it in today's world.

5 out of 5 stars a must have.......2007-04-21

I love all martial art films such as Gymkata, The Last Dragon and FIVE DEADLY VENOMS. My favorite character is the snake his movements are amazing. It's a hard movie to find so I recomend ordering it from amazon.

4 out of 5 stars The A Team before the A Team.......2007-01-16

Before there was an A team there was this A Team...the Five deadly Venoms may be confusing at times but it is classic team rivalry and martial arts at its best.

WITHOUT THIS MOVIE, THERE WOULDNT BE ANY KUNG FU FLICKS MADE.YES,THIS IS THE 1ST OF MANY VENOMS FILMS.ALONG SIDE MASKED AVENGERS,THIS IS THE SAME STORY LINE. ITS GOOD VENOM VS. BAD VENOM. AT THE END ITS A FIGHT TO THE FINISH. PICK IT UP BECAUSE W/O THIS YOUR COLLECTION IS NOTHING. HAPPY KUNG FU SHOPPING. HAHA SEE YA, FROM KUNG FU COLLECT.

4 out of 5 stars These Venoms Kick, Punch & BITE!.......2006-08-08

This one's a true original.

Forget all the chop socky tired foolery about vengeful students seeking bloody justice over murdered masters or bright eyed, bald Shaolin monks teaching the uninitiated and unwashed a thing or two about fighting and philosophy. This one's about money. It's also about treasure, about deception, backstabbing and backbiting, oh and did I also mention masks?

Five Deadly Venoms rocks and socks with some of the most memorable fight scenes ever filmed for a period Kung-Fu flick. And that's why we rent em and buy em, right? The action!

Watch this one before you pop in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. This one has to be one of QT's favorites and it may just become a favorite of yours too.

5 out of 5 stars Red Sun is good, but waiting for Image Entertainment.......2007-03-20

To anybody who never saw a "real" kung fu movie or thinks it's chop-socky nonsense, then watch this awesome movie. It will change your whole attitude around. Like most of the reviewers, I caught this movie as a kid on "Drive In Movie" Saturday afternoon in the early 80s. Actually, "Chinatown Kid" (another classic starring the Venoms & the late Fu Sheng) was my first official intro to the incredible Shaw Brothers/Chang Cheh realm. "Five Venoms", along with "The Kid With the Golden Arm" (same people behind that), "Master Killer" (directed by Liu Chia-liang, starring his half-brother, Gordon Liu) & "The Prodigal Son" (Samo Hung wing chun classic), is simply one of the best.

First, the film itself~everyone seems to know the story, dying sifu (Tu Lung a.k.a. Dick Wei) of the Poison Clan sends his last student Yang Tieh (the late Chiang Sheng) to seek out his other five students. Ally himself with one virtuous venom and kill the ones who are villainous. The five venoms are #1 Centipede; Tang San-kwei (Lu Feng), #2 Snake; Hung Wen-tung (Wei Pai, who I never considered to be a real venom. He was only in four of their films and wasn't a real martial artist like the rest of them), #3 Scorpion; Ma Tang (Sun Chien), #4 Lizard; Ho Yung-hsin (Philip Kuo Chui) & #5 Toad; Li Ho (Golden Arm himself Lo Mang).

Despite not having as many fights as some of the other Venom classics, the story is so engrossing it doesn't matter. However, the fights that do occur deliver the goods. Kudos to Robert Tai & Liang Ting for their choreography, especially Toad versus Centipede and that incredible end fight. Even Wei Pai looks good, although he's totally outclassed by Kuo & Chiang. Great performances and great music. I know it's stock music but Chen Yung-yu really picked out some of the best tracks.

A little trivia info, the Snake venom was originally supposed to be played by a woman and #1 & #2 were husband and wife. Director Chang Cheh (reportedly a chauvinist) scrapped the idea because he didn't want a woman having a lead role in his movie. Next, the DVD transfer~the Red Sun version is the best one right now, they must have borrowed their version from Celestial. It's widescreen, crisp picture, decent audio and it's uncut (you see the Scorpion sort of lose his mind right before he dies). Unfortunately, it's dubbed but at least it's those Australian people doing the English voices. Good news, Celestial Pictures did a slamming job on their version; bad news, it's region 3. However, Image Entertainment has been re-releasing awesome prints of Shaw Brother classics on region 1. Check out my review for "Have Sword Will Travel."

5 out of 5 stars Five Deadly Venoms get 5 Stars.......2007-02-09

INSTANT CLASSIC!! You must have this movie if you are a fan of Kung-fu movies!! The various characters and styles were outrageous, but well-represented. The Red-Sun version sound was adequate, but my version got stuck when #4 quits the police department. I think this is a hit or miss.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS EDITION!! RED SUN VERSION.......2006-11-10

Fully restored and anamorphic widescreen. Unlike the crappy bootleg copies others sell on Amazon, the picture looks great. The only negative I can see is that it doesn't have the original Chinese language track with English subtitles, but that doesn't really matter to me because I like the English Language track better. Old-School King-Fu movies, especially Shaw brothers are better enjoyed that way I feel, reminds me of my youth. Buy this edition for the best quality of this classic film.

5 out of 5 stars Poison Clan Rocks The World.......2006-06-20

Everyone rejoice...the remastered widescreen English dubbed version of this famous film is now available. And yes the famous lines spoken by the original voice-over actors are intact. Now you can hear "poison clan rocks the world" and "the iron maiden" once again and enjoy the viewing the fabulous restoration at the same time. There aren't any significant special features but heck at least we have a version that's worth showing your friends.

5 out of 5 stars ALL HAIL THE CRIPPLES!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-27

chang cheh does it too me again. he leaves you craving for more this time after making david chiang and ti lung into international superstars he does with group of guys from a opera school in taiwan, a chinese muscleman, and a hun gar stylist from china. im talking about the ever so dynamic kuo chui, lu feng, chiang sheng and the muscle bounded supposedly mantisfist expert in lo mang and a hun gar stylist wei pai (who didnt appear in this movie). after making such classics as "the one armed swordsman", "the water margin", "5 masters of shaolin", and "the 5 deadly venoms" chang cheh takes a new approach in the latter part in the 1970's and into the 1980's. after his top notch choreographer lau kar leung became a reknowned director in the mid 70's he took a gamble with a young dynamic and taiwan opera school weapons specialist robert tai aka tai chi hsien aka gangly who also went to the same school with kuo chui, lu feng, chiang sheng, angela mao ying, judy lee, james tien, jack long, and chang yi. and man did robert tai bring a new dimension to fight choreogrpahy to the genre and he is one of the best fight directors ever but he doesnt get the credit he deserves. he definitley top 5 and all the fight scenes hes done for the venoms mob has been nothing short of superb and spectacular.so after he did naval commandos or so he became chang cheh and the venoms chief fight choreographer. this movie should be viewed by children just like the one armed swordsman because it teaches us the value of having a disability and turning it into our greatest strength instead wallowing in self-pity and frustration. this film stars one of my favorite actors chen kuan tai aka the original iron monkey as yes folks the LEAD VILLAIN which he has never played before this role and lu feng as his son and the crippled avengers are kuo chui (blind), lo mang (deaf and mute), sun shein (legless) and chiang sheng (dumb)and the all seek out chiang sheng's master because he was once a master swordsman and the others never learned any kung fu. wang lung wei as chen kuan tai's bodyguard and dick wei as a general out to kill chen's character. of course in the venom films dick wei lasts 30 seconds which is transcondescending of his talents but anyway he kills helen poon bing sung chen's wife and chops off his son's arms. the training scenes and fight scenes is like i said top notch and a great inspiring story as well this version the red sun is a definite pick up and also try to find the celestial pictures release as well.

4 out of 5 stars my youth in these venoms movies.......2007-02-11

ever since i was about fifteen, and first saw "five deadly venoms", i was hook on whatever movie the "venoms" was in , and "the crippled avengers" was one of those movies...it brought out the almost comedic side of 'toad" and the usual comedic side of "young lizard", my best part is when young lizard was looking for one of his partner at the bad guy house and went in demanding to be heard and feared, when the boss man looked at one of his coharts and said, "who is this idiot?" which in his facial expressions really define the next move, and that was to make him an idiot. that scene was hilarious, outside of the extreme talents of the venomes moves and strength, it is one of my favorite venoms movies...and i hope you would add it to yours.... the unfortunate, ever since i saw my first venoms movie, i rate all other kung fu movies to the expert fighting sequences of most of the venoms...and outside of gordon liu, and of course , bruce lee. no other kung fu flick compares to a venoms movie, even an so-so venoms movie, and i will put a centipede five finger palm strike hold on anyone who says different!!!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars 0 STARS: Rubbish!!.......2007-08-22

Unfortunately, I caught this on encore the other night, and being that it is supposed to be a horror movie, I decided to watch it. Succinctly, "Venom" represents a lame attempt to spice up a slasher-type movie with an element of the oh-so-deadly voodoo stuff!! I'm just shaking in my boots after having seen it!!

The voodoo element does not work at all, and, basically, what you have in "Venom" is nothing you haven't already seen before except for the exciting element of voodoo which is completely unconvincing in my estimation and actually makes the movie even more stupid in my opinion than if the movie had just gone straight slasher.

The acting, directing and screenplay are all horrible in this flick making for an intellectual meltdown experience and a completely boring way to spend your evening. I could barely finish this trash. Sadly, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is a lot better than this garbage. I guess they just don't make slashers like they used to...what a tragedy to see what this once beautiful sub-genre of horror has actually come to. If Hollywood is going to continue with this kind of garbage, then I have great fears (not in a good way) for the future of my beloved horror genre.

Some people call "Venom" a horror movie...I just call it rubbish.

3 out of 5 stars All Bite And No Real Venom.......2007-08-09

With the Louisiana swamps as backdrop, voodoo as a catalyst, and young starlets heading up the cast, you'd think that "Venom" might just be able to be a decent R-rated slasher/hacker flick. Instead of that, we get another formulaic PG-13 teen slasher flick with a little more gore and a lot more rough language (hence the "R" rating). Poor Ray Sawyer was just trying to save an old lady's life when he got snakebit. Unfortunately for him, though, the venom in the snake's bite was a little bit more than poisonous. It contained the souls of some of the wickedest murderers and rapists you could muster in southern Louisiana. Now undead and armed with a crowbar, Ray is after any and everybody who stands in his way. A gaggle of local teens try to stop him by using voodoo, but will that work? If you can sit through this textbook horror flick you just might find out.

The cast is made up of relative unknowns (at least to me). The biggest stars (if you can call them that) are Method Man as a cop and Bijou Phillips as the only thing Bijou Phillips seems to get cast as: the local tramp. She does get to keep her clothes on in this flick, though. Everybody in the film does very well with what they're given, but I really never cared if any of them lived or died.

The creature doing all of the wicked business looked decent enough, but didn't have the screen presence of "Jason" or even "Michael Myers." He grunted a lot, growled a bit, and freed up a few limbs. Overall, however, he just wasn't that menacing to watch.

I felt that more could have been done with the voodoo aspect of the film, but I'm just a reviewer. Why the voodoo wasn't explored deeper is unknown to me.

In conclusion I must say that "Venom" is decent enough for one viewing, but there is a lot better horror out there. I mildly recommend this flick to horror fans. If you enjoy flicks like the "Friday The 13th" series or mediocre horror like "Dreamcatcher," "Venom" will suit you just fine.

2 out of 5 stars Dimension Film Horror from the Director of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" .......2007-08-08

For making of Dimension Film's "Venom," Kevin Williamson (as producer) joins forces again with director Jim Gillespie who had once helmed "I Know What You Did Last Summer" based on Williamson's script. As you know, in this 1997 hit horror film, a group of teenagers are stalked and killed by a mysterious guy with a hook, who is supposed to be dead.

In "Venom," a pack of teenagers including Eden (Agnes Bruckner) and her ex-boyfriend Eric (Jonathan Jackson) must run away from the zombie-like murderer with jingling keys, who is also supposed to be killed in a strange car accident. With a different setting (this time, in the swamps of Louisiana) and a spooky photography, the film tries to tell a new story, which is in fact nothing new.

But as you know, slasher films tend to be formulaic from the beginning - flat characters, obligatory love interest, etc. - so story is not everything. I know what really matters is suspense and killings in the end, so I waited for the film to show what it really can do.

What really disappointed me is this - the film is not scary or gory enough. Maybe that's because I have seen so many horror films since the 1980s. Even so, most tricks used here are not particularly original, used by some more famous killers like Jason who did it better.

Only Bijou Phillips and her character as shoplifting girl interested me during the film's 90 minute running time. But the time allotted to her is not very long.

4 out of 5 stars A Gory Slasher Flick.......2007-03-26

Ray Sawyer (Rick Cramer), Agnes Bruckner (Eden), Laura Ramsey (Rachel), Jonathan Jackson (Eric), and D.J. Cotrana (Sean) star in this scary and bloody slasher movie.

Eric and Eden are going through any typical teen romance; going steady one minute, broken up the next. Eden works at a local truck stop as a waitress. One evening, Ray pulls into the truck stop to get some food. Known as the local nut case, Ray has few friends and owns a filling station on the edge of town. Later that same evening, Ray comes upon Eric and Eden on a lonely bridge. Swerving to miss Eric's jeep, Ray instead crashes into an on-coming car. The impact of the crash sends the car slamming through the guardrail of the bridge. The car is now teetering precariously on the side of the bridge. Ray jumps from his truck and goes to the aid of the woman inside the car. After pulling her to safety, Ray goes back inside to retrieve a suitcase that the woman told him about. However, both Ray and the car tumble over the side of the bridge and into the water below. To make matters worse, the suitcase is full of poisonous snakes, who immediately begin striking at Ray. All that can be heard are Ray's screams as the car sinks.

Ray's body is pulled from the water and taken to the local morgue. But it doesn't remain there for long. It seems that the woman in the car was a Voodoo priestess, and the snakes were used to "cleanse" people by drawing the evil out of them. Now, the evil venom is flowing through Ray. Now begins a bloodbath of carnage as Ray, possessed by the power of the evil venom flowing through him, begins to stalk unsuspecting victims. One by one, he exacts his revenge on Eden's friends until only Eden remains. Who will win this final showdown; Ray or Eden?

I've always been a big fan of slasher-type films, and characters like Freddy from the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series, as well as Jason from "Friday the 13th". Ray Sawyer fits the mold of the typical slasher perfectly. The motives are the same; kill as many teenagers as possible, and Ray succeeds in this very well. I thought the story involving voodoo was well-conceived. The special effects were good, too.

I recommend this movie to horror and slasher fans. Although the movie is short (only about 80 minutes), there's lots of slashing in a short amount of time. If you enjoy a good slasher flick, then don't miss "Venom".

3 out of 5 stars All Over The Map!!!.......2007-03-15

This movie has no real focus and just slithers around from one scare to another much akin to the poorly rendered CGI snakes that pop up in the film. The setting is great, the acting is fair. At one point, the dialogue was so bad that I had to turn it off: "So, that's what the underside of a car looks like," as uttered by one of the characters who comes across a vehicle overturned by the villain. I wanted this movie to be more like Candyman, and a little less riddled with bubble-gum teen angst. The cast would probably be better utilized in another film altogether. I actually wanted to check this flick out as I am a fan of Bijou Phillips, but even her role was wasted and unnecessary. The one-dimensional character who becomes the super-strong villain Mr. Jangles--there was nothing terrifying about him. I attribute this to unusual, choppy editing that marked his appearances in the film and detracted from his potential as a formidable foe. Anyway, see this only if you enjoy voodoo themes and Louisiana settings. Otherwise, as far as teen slasher fare goes, it is skippable.

Venom, the scariest and most memorable villain from Spider-Man's post-Stan Lee era, takes center stage in this collection of five episodes ("The Alien Costume" parts 1-3, "Venom Returns," and "Carnage") from the Spider-Man animated series from the mid-'90s. The action begins when astronaut John Jameson discovers a strange new substance on the moon. The substance ends up becoming a new black costume for Spider-Man, and he's thrilled with the way it enhances his natural powers (such as spinning webs without mechanical web shooters) and can change into a different outfit merely upon a thought. Spidey soon discovers, however, that the apparent costume is actually an alien symbiote that is gradually taking control of his thoughts. Spidey is able to overcome the symbiote, but it finds a new host in Daily Bugle washout Eddie Brock, and their mutual hatred of Spider-Man creates a deadly new villain, Venom, whose natural powers exceed Spidey's. Things get even more complicated when Venom's "offspring" finds a host and becomes the even deadlier Carnage. Also making appearances in these episodes are the Kingpin, the Shocker, the Rhino, Dormammu, Iron Man, and War Machine. DVD features include some interesting comments by David Michelinie, who with artist Todd MacFarlane, created Venom in the comic books. Among other topics in the unnecessarily complicated feature, he discusses differences between the show and the comics. Stan Lee also boards his soap box to dish about Venom (11 minutes) and has optional introductions for each episode. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Better in Season Long Releases, Best as a Whole Series.......2007-08-07

I recently watched through this entire series from episode one to the end on old tapes with my kids. I hadn't watched the show since it's original airing in the nineties, and I've gotta say, taken as a whole, it is a fantastic show.

The true strength of this version of Spiderman is the way the story builds, the way episodes that came before are not forgotten, and the way each epsidode leads into the next. The story doesn't stagnate, the status quo doesn't have to be maintained, and something that happens in season two is still relevant in season four, etc.

The first season wasn't quite as strong (the writers seemed determined to get JJ a big role in most episodes,) but it was still quite good. The second season (with it's fourteen part Mutagenic Nightmare) was probably the best season of any animated show I've ever seen. Even better, the events of season two are not forgetten, and Season four has a five part sequal where all of the guest stars from season two return. Seasons two, four and five were the best (five started slow, but turned fantastic about half way through and stayed that way through the end.)

The series had some real surprises in it -- a revelation about Mary Jane in season five shocked both my kids (and shocked me, too, the first time I saw it,) -- and it also (when taken as a whole) packed some emotional punch. The last six or so episodes really showed the growth of the Spiderman/Peter character over the course of the series, and provided a touching, fitting, hopefull finale for the series.

Of course being a superhero show, there was a lot of action, and most of it was actually quite good. When I first saw the show I didn't realize all the restrictions that had been put on the producers by the network. Knowing the restrictions now makes me realize what an amazing job the writers and producers did. The fact that they were able to create such entertaining action sequences without violating the networks rules is actually pretty amazing.

The show included quite a few intersting guest apearances -- the Punisher, Daredevil, Morbius the Living Vampire, Captain America, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, the X-Men, the Black Cat, etc -- most of whom made multiple apearances and were more than just "guests of the week." The series also featured a majority of Spiderman's most famous villains and supporting characters. Even minor charactors like Flash Thompson got repeated attention and a chance to grow (again, when the series was taken as a whole.)

Honestly, it's a shame this complete series has not been released in season long box sets for new and old fans alike. The individual DVD releases do not do the series justice, and it's a shame fans have not been given a chance to see how good of a series this truly is when taken as a whole. I would love to have the opportunity to buy both this series and the original X-Men 90's animated series in complete season box sets with high quality DVD transfers. I would certainly buy all five seasons of each, were they available, and think many fans would greatly appreciate having the chance to watch both series the way they were intended.

That said, this is probably the best of the individual DVD releases. This, and the Secret Wars DVD which I used to have (but which no longer seems to exist even on Ebay) were the best of the stand alones, but even still, the series is best as a whole.

4 out of 5 stars Forgot how good this series was..........2007-06-08

I use to watch this animated series as a kid but I didn't appreciate the writing or plot development as much as just watching Spidey fight the bad guys. Watching it is an adult gives me a better appreciation for the writing and creativity. This DVD is a must buy for fans and an easy watch for people new to Spider Man. The DVD is well-made and the bonus material with Stan Lee is entertaining to watch. Would have given 5 stars but I was hoping for more bonus material and interviews.

5 out of 5 stars Before "Spider-Man 3", there was the animated Venom saga!.......2007-05-02

Astronaut John Jameson whom is the son of Jonah Jameson was doing an exploration on the moon as he bring backs a space rock with a black alien slime inside of it. When it attacks John as they approach Earth the ship crash lands by the river of New York, a large muscular man in a Rhino outfit named The Rhino steals the space rock from the ship with Peter Parker's rival Eddie Brock taking pictures of the robbery and telling Jonah Jameson that Spider-Man was the one that robbed the shuttle. Spidy has been framed and a mysterious alien goo consumes his costume making it into a special black Spider-Man costume with super jumping speed, can change his clothes for him and can make unlimited webbing thus making him a super Spider-Man as he thinks it's swell. Unfortunately it's a deadly living organism that is trying to take over his personality and his body as he soon discovers and must try to get rid of it, once he does it consumes Eddie Brock turning him into the sharp-toothed big eyed black Spider-Man doppleganger named Venom so he can reek his revenge on Spider-Man.

Another great DVD set of the great 1994 Spider-Man animated series but this time with every fanboy's favorite Spider-Man villain, these episodes also guest star Kingpin, Shocker, Rhino, Iron-Man, War Machine and Carnage. Featuring the voices of Hank Azaria and Ed Asner and good animation with some CGI, this is the perfect appetizer for fans before they see "Spider-Man 3" to see Venom on the big screen.

The DVD has only a few extras like introductions by Stan Lee, a multi-featurette on Venom's origins by the creators and Stan Lee's Soapbox.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids who are fans of Spiderman.......2007-03-11

This was nice CD my son enjoyed it. Shows the Venom story in the Spiderman Series Cartoon. It is a great buy. You can see the difference in the script back then and now. For instance as Venom Spiderman almost kills Shocker but his doesn't say I almost killed some one, he says I almost did a bad thing. That when entertainment cared about the content of what they put out. I love superheros cartoons and I enjoy watching them with the kids

5 Stars one for each of the Venoms!
These guys really rock. They must have know the success of 5 was awesome because they took even better care and more time to get this Kung Fu stuff right. This is a must see. Even better then 5 Deadly venoms. I think everyone knows its not the original title. The venoms died in the last one. This one has some pretty amazing scenes in it. Just get this version. Its pretty good and clear. I don't know about the Hong Kong Celestial pictures and the rights. What I do know is that some company's sell this DVD here in the USA and its good that they do so we can enjoy it. I have seen bootleg dvds before and this sure don't look it to me. So enjoy and Kung Fu Rockem Sockem Get this DVD now!

3 out of 5 stars Return of the 5 Deadly Venoms..........2007-02-05

It doesn't compare to it's predecessor, but still, the Kung Fu action and storyline are decent. Three stars!

4 out of 5 stars A TRUE CLASSIC.......2006-03-02

This movie was great, I have this version and I found the picture quality just fine, not quite as good as my Master Killer series which is crystal clear(distributed by Red Sun, who I had never heard of). But the movie itself is just wonderful. If you don't know the story, I'll tell you real briefly. A guys son gets his hands chopped off at the start of the movie, after his son gros up and finally gets his iron hands, he, his dad, and his dad's sidekick go around crippling people for the fun of it. So that is why this movie is really called the crippled avengers. The only reason that I didn't give this movie 5 stars is that the fact that the fighting is really good acrobatic wise, but I just did't get a sense of realism. If it looked a little more real, I would consider it like a top 20 movie ever.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie, buy the bootleg and zip your pie hole.......2006-01-07

This non-Celestial pictures DVD is the best!! I LOVE SUPPORTING LOW DOWN PIRATES looking to make a quick buck, or even a slow one for that matter. Quite frankly the savings are passed on to the customer and everyone wins. I would make this movie on my DVD burner at home and sell it for $3 on amazon if I could and I would even throw in bonus footage of myself in ninja gear rocking out to Holy Diver at the end of the movie for free.

The movie itself is a classic tale of a gang of crips getting together to beat up a kung-fu warlord with the stumps where there arms and legs used to be. The fact that iron appendeges are now attached to the stumps doesn't hurt either. The scene where Iron Legs tricks the invincible cape wearing guy to let him kick him in the stomach is unforgettable. The look on the caped man's face is priceless when he realizes he's fallen for the old "guy with iron legs, which are covered by normal shoes and pants, asks you for a kick in the stomach head start to the fight" routine.

Don't listen to any quality otakus who are complaining about the dvd quality. I found out some of them actually work for celestial and are just trying to get sales. In a private e-mail, one of them (I told him I wouldn't name names) admitted that celestial is actually run by funballs from Laos who have no respect for kung-fu's heritage. So you might as well get the bootleg and support the true asian artists out there trying to keep the kung-fu heritage alive. While your at it, include a cheese sandwich with your check if you mail in the payment, because those dudes are hungry.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this bootleg.......2005-07-04

This DVD is a poor quality bootleg. The U.S. title of this film is "Mortal Combat", but the original title is "Crippled Avengers". The title listed on Amazon was made up by the bootlegger to capitalize on the popularity of the "5 Deadly Venoms". A company called Celestial owns the worldwide copyright on ALL Shaw Brothers movies. Their digitally remastered DVD has been available for a couple of years, and puts this bootleg to shame. That catch is that you must purchase it from a Hong Kong based web site. Amazon is not allowed to sell it, so they have listed this bootleg. Find a Hong Kong based web site and purchase the official DVD!

Hasbro's perennially popular soldier boy G.I. Joe returns in a new CGI adventure that packs enough adventure to please longtime fans of the '80s animated series (on which this feature is based) and newcomers to the Joe universe. In Valor vs. Venom, the villainous Cobra Commander organizes worldwide abductions in order to fuel Cobra's latest global domination plot--an army of super-soldiers created from genetically altered humans and animals. When the Joe team's leader, General Hawk, is kidnapped, his second-in-command, Duke, rallies the troops to save their leader and stop Cobra's nefarious scheme. Despite the outlandish plot (even by G.I. Joe standards), Valor vs. Venom delivers what Joe's audience wants: lots of combat using a variety of high-tech weapons and gear and carried out by a cast of valiant heroes and hissable villains. The CGI animation, while a bit stiff, allows the filmmakers to pitch Joe's adventures on a grander scale, and the film's epic scope includes battles on every point on the globe (though concerned parents should know that the violence is very tame). --Paul Gaita

Joe team fights this new menace in a battle to save humanity.

5 out of 5 stars let go of the past folks.......2007-03-26

People should be happy that this movie was made instead of only comparing it to the 80's series. I personally love this movie and so does my five year old son. Even my wife likes it. There will never be another Joe series, movie, etc. that is better than the old toons. The ninja scenes are a highlight and the music is even semi-cool. Check it out or try it again.

3 out of 5 stars didn't make sense..........2006-08-01

i don't know i watched this but why didn't it make sense??? i mean they were all over the place duke and commander fighting in a building then it switched to storm shadow and snake eyes fighting in a jungle what?!?! well other than a few problems it was ok.

4 out of 5 stars Not that bad.......2006-01-14

I bought this for my son who is five, he loves the movie and watches it daily while playing with his G.I. Joe figures. If your expecting to see something that resembles the original cartoon series then you will be disapointed, but overall it really isn't that bad. It has a positive message for kids, eventhough it does show some mild violence later on in the movie. For an adult it's really boring but it keeps my child interested and that's pretty difficult to do with a young child!

1 out of 5 stars wack.......2005-09-20

the onyl reason i got this was because i lvoe gi joe and wanted to see how the new re makes were as far as writers voices and looks as cgi characters but unfortunatly the story sucked and was boring , the bad guys were horrible as far as depth to character the movie was a ploy toget chumps like me to buy that reminice on the good old gi joe, the toys look awesome so i figured it would be nice, but instead i wanted to fall asleep, or shoot myself, shame on whoever was in charge of letting this new re cration turn out so horriblee and borderline homo

3 out of 5 stars I missed the original series.......2005-09-20

This is an all new G.I. Joe adventure for an all new generation, so I shouldn't except the same things. With that said, I still somewhat enjoyed this, but the use of CG instead of hand drawn animation is what really made me mad. It's not the worst CG I've seen, it was actually pretty good for a direct to DVD release, but it just seem too different from the old cartoon and comics to have it feel like the same series. Despite these problems, at a mere 77 minutes, I was able to sit and enjoy it as a free rental as the story itself was still classic Joe. If you want to rent G.I. Joe rent the original series, if you want something new get this one.

4 out of 5 stars Dendroaspis Polylepis or Black Mamba.......2006-12-27

I expected to see more of the snake than the cast, but this movie is thrilling.Dendroaspis Polylepis is the most aggresive, poisonous and the fastest snake in the world.Normally a Cobra like Naja Naja or King Cobra(Ophiophagus Hannah)would raise it's head backward before attacking, but black mamba attacks without warnings.
Klaus kinski's interpretation in this movie is excellent to me.A good thriller,Oliver Reed has always been one of my idols in British screens.
It's a story of a little dandy Lord almost taken away by kidnappers, but thanks to Mamba they're killed by this African snake.
Someone in my family doesn't enjoy horror movies, surprisingly,he enjoyed this 'thriller'.(but with fear that his finger might be chopped too!!!)

4 out of 5 stars Snake in An Apartment (with Terrorist Killers, Too).......2006-08-05

Originally released in 1981, I remember the movie poster featuring the hard sell tagline: "See It Before the Lines Form!" Wishful thinking, as it turned out, but this is still a pretty good suspense film, with at least a couple of extraordinarily skin-crawlingly intense scenes. In fact, I'd think people who saw the movie about the same time I did will probably ONLY remember those scenes, really. Plus, as a bonus, the snake used in the movie is an actual Black Mamba snake, not some cheesy special effects knockoff. If you are afraid of snakes, this won't be the movie for you, as at least one death in the movie will almost certainly give you nightmares.

This skilfully made thriller also has a top notch cast including Klaus Kinski, Oliver Reed, Sarah Miles, Nicol Williamson, Susan George and Michael Gough. Plus a REAL Black Mamba as..., well, the scary Black Mamba. (I gave this movie an extra star for the use of the Black Mamba in a starring role.)

1 out of 5 stars not much bite to this snake horror.......2006-02-17

a boy gets the worlds deadiest snake by mistake from a pet store???? huh what pet store is going to get the killer anyway but that is just the first of so many plot holes that i won't even talk about any others . just a fine cast wasted in this thrillesss non scary horror/suspence movie. a compleate mess and a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars Badly marketed on release...this is a smart thriller.......2005-03-04

The movie "Venom" is not so much a scary monster movie as it is an intelligent and involving thriller. In fact the black mamba (reportedly the worlds deadliest snake) has very little screen time and serves merely as a device to move along the plot and raise the tension level of a household held hostage by ciminals and under siege by police.
The plot concerns a small band of criminals (a chauffeur played by Oliver Reed, a sexy maid played by the amazing Susan George and a slick professional killer played by Klaus Kinski) and their plot to kidnap and hold for ransom a young boy in London.
Complicating matters is the aforementioned snake. In a mixed up delivery the boy gets a black mamba instead of the tame, non-poisonous reptile he had ordered. Further complicating matters for these crooks is the botched attempt at snatching the boy that leads to them being surrounded by the local police (led by the excellent Nicol Williamson).
This is a nice DVD by Blue Underground and included is a very informative and entertaining audio commentary by director Piers Haggard. We learn some of the background to the departure of the first director (Tobe Hooper) and also some tidbits on the production (apparently Reed and Kinski hated each other and were constantly at each others throats). Haggard also makes some curious comments (including an admiration on the physical attributes of George) but overall its one of the better directors commentaries I have listened to,
This movie failed to make an audience when it was released almost a quarter-century ago, largely because of a poor marketing campaign (another subject Haggard discusses) that inaccurately tagged the movie as a scary monster movie and not the intelligent thriller that it is.
Definitely worth a spin.

3 out of 5 stars Bland but occasionally interesting.......2004-12-22

Oliver Reed and Klaus Kinski in the same film! What were they thinking? Kinski's mercurial temperament, of course, has attained the heights of legend. His collaborations with German filmmaker Werner Herzog in such pictures as "Fitzcarraldo," "Cobra Verde," and "Nosferatu" were brilliant examples of the power of his talent, but were also notable for the behind the scenes hostility between director and actor. Herzog even made a documentary about his stormy relationship with Kinski, "My Best Fiend," in which he acknowledged the physical and emotional violence between the two men. Incredibly, even talk of a murder plot was not out of the question in this relationship. Other directors have essentially confirmed the horrific experience of working with Klaus Kinski. Oliver Reed's bad behavior apparently knew no bounds, either. Fabio Testi, his co-star in "Revolver," described how Reed once ate broken light bulbs during a bender to prove his "superiority." The director of that same picture claimed he had to film all of Reed's scenes in the morning before too many bottles of sauce turned the performer into a lumbering brute. Nice. Nonetheless, someone sat down and thought the idea of putting these two guys in the same movie was a good idea. I hope the director received appropriate compensation for his pain.

"Venom" takes place in England and involves a young boy, his grandfather, a black mamba snake, and a ransom plot. When the wealthy parents of this child go out of town, leaving him in the charge of his grandfather Howard Anderson (Sterling Hayden), the chauffer Dave (Reed) and the maid Louise (Susan George) hatch a grand plot. If they can kidnap this kid and shunt him off to some isolated location, the parents will shell out big bucks for his return. Since the kid has a bunch of health problems, primarily a serious case of asthma, his mother and father can hardly refuse to deal with the kidnappers. To help facilitate the plan, Louise contacts a career criminal named Jacmal (Kinski) to fly into England and direct the operation. Right from the start Dave expresses misgivings about bringing this man into the picture. Dave and Louise share an intense physical relationship, and the chauffer worries that Jacmal has designs on his woman. Better he should worry about the package the kid brought home. This sickly little scion loves animals, just like his famous documentary making grandfather, and he keeps a bunch of them in cages and tanks in his room. When he went to pick up a harmless snake for his collection, he inadvertently claimed a box containing the aforementioned black mamba. Disaster is sure to follow.

Jacmal arrives at the townhouse to take the kid away at roughly the same time a police officer shows up at the house investigating a call from Dr. Marian Stowe (Sarah Miles) about the missing poisonous snake. Dave panics and empties a shotgun into the cop's chest. Before the officer expires outside the townhouse, he manages to summon more officers to the scene. Inside the house all is pandemonium as the black mamba escapes from its prison and bites Louise. Seeing Susan George turn into a bloated, graying, frothing at the mouth snakebite victim is, I must say, a treasure that all should see at least once in their life. Unfortunately, "Venom" goes downhill rapidly from this point on. The rest of the film turns into a "tense" standoff as the cops try to talk the kidnappers into letting Anderson and the kid go while those inside the house attempt to locate the black mamba. Jacmal impresses Howard Anderson into service as head snake catcher, a role seemingly suited to a man whose life consists of heading out into the dark places of the world to photograph dangerous beasties. At one point in the proceedings Jacmal manages to capture the prissy Dr. Stowe as an additional bargaining chip, sending out her finger as proof that he means business. The film wraps up in a predictable and generally unexciting way.

"Venom" is largely unexciting, slow, and forgettable. If not for the cast, this film surely would sink into total oblivion. Klaus Kinski, whose later career saw him playing aloof and ironic criminals, plays an aloof and ironic criminal here. He doesn't step into the movie until well after it starts, but his presence does help move the process over the numerous speed bumps the script insists on placing in the way. His final scene in the film is, frankly, quite amusing. Susan George never looked better, but she disappears from the scene so quickly thanks to the mamba that we barely have time to lament her passing. Oliver Reed does in "Venom" what Oliver Reed does in every film I've seen him in: rant, rave, and stomp around threatening people. The dual stresses of the police outside and the snake inside reduce his character Dave to a tousled, sweaty wreck of a man you just know will meet a painful demise at some point in the film. Then there is Sterling Hayden, the venerable figure of stage and screen who looks like he's ready to take a Valium after spending a few weeks caught in the throes of a Kinski/Reed association. Sadly, the script doesn't ask his character to do much except comfort the kid and wander around darkened rooms looking for the snake.

Thanks to Blue Underground, the DVD version of "Venom" contains several supplements. The commentary track with director Piers Haggard reveals many interesting anecdotes about working with Kinski and Reed, as well as describing the exit of original director Tobe Hooper. A trailer, stills, television and radio spots, and cast biographies round out the disc. The picture quality is excellent. A movie that could have been better with a quicker pace and more snake attacks, "Venom" is still worth watching for the recognizable faces in the cast.

2 out of 5 stars Yellow Jackets Not Bees.......2007-02-02

A firm is testing a new bug killer and accidentally creates two extra-mean and extra-toxic wasps. One is killed right away but the other manages to escape and kill. The new bug killer is not doing too well. Then a sample of the stuff gets used in the field and a whole new batch of the beasties is created. These creatures are meaner than usual and their attack pheromones help draw other, less lethal, yellow jackets to join the swarm.

Meanwhile the town is planning a big national cooking competition to determine the greatest hamburger. Apparently yellow jackets are drawn to raw meat. A lot is riding on the festival and a number of characters will do anything to make sure it goes on without a hitch. So finally we have a scientist, a sexy entomologist, an exterminator and a cop as the only defense we have against the killer swarm. The action culminates at the festival and we have the movie's finale.

This one is bad. It bears some resemblance to The Deadly Swarm but just does a lot of weird stuff. The special effects are not in line with the plot. The bug killer should kill 75% yet the field test results in more live yellow jackets than the nest should be able to hold. This is the first-annual cook-off but the press interviews the previous year's winner. Smoke causes a hive to wake up while in reality smoke is used to sedate them. Finally, it is almost laughable to see these yellow jackets actively fly into flaming barbeque grills (the flames have no effect on them although it is later used as a weapon). Countless other silly bits abound. Check out the minuscule barbell the Mayor needs a spotter's help with. All in all a fun movie to heckle but one that makes little sense.

3 out of 5 stars Good little movie.......2006-08-04

If you like these types of movies, you will not regret this one.
Its really pretty good, has a story and characters that you
will love/hate. The effects are decent and if you ever saw a swarm
fly buy, it will bring back some memories when you see the swarms
flying in the movie which makes the movie even better.
The only problem is with the lame ending...but heck you cant
win them all. Give it a shot....

3 out of 5 stars BIZZY BEEZ.......2006-05-21

Bees have never looked as vicious as they do in this made for SCIFI CHANNEL movie. Although the plot is derivative and the acting fairly mundane, SWARMED is a creepy tale of genetically charged bees with killer venom and stings. Michael Shanks from STARGATE 1 looks bored in his role as the scientist responsible for the mutations and former model Carol Alt tries hard to look ditzy, but only manages to look stupid..sorry, Carol. There are some creepy bee attacks, a Will Smith wannabe and the always watchable Tim Thomerson as the king of the Barbecue Sauce.
It's pretty farfetched and has an ending that defies logic, but it's fun anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2006-04-19

I watched the show specifically because I am a Stargate fan. I like the Daniel(played by Michael Shanks) character, but this isn't Daniel. He's a stupid man who lets a scourge out onto the world. The special affects are creepy, especially the mayor's eyes. Tim Thomerson as the meat magnet is as pomous as you can get, yet he jumps into some water. Of course, the bees chase him down.
This is a fun movie and that is why I gave it a 4. It's not super movie like "The Godfather", or "Gone With the Wind", it's just fun.

4 out of 5 stars A solid TV movie.......2006-03-30

This is yet another fine made for tv movie. Ok the genre is certainly not new but it also never gets old either.

A couple of genecticall engineered wasps escape from a research lab and threaten the well being of an entire town which just happens to have a major event just around the corner. As bodies pill up Two scientist and a professional bug man must stop this deadly swarm before things get worse.

Throw in the greedy police chief and an ambitious and also greedy mayor and you have a very good film .

I recommend this.

3 out of 5 stars Not in league of earlier Scorpion movies, but some fun for WIP fans..........2005-08-07

[Warning small spoilers of scenes though not plot.] These (double feature, sharing plots and actresses) movies have neither the standard new-fish-in-big-house WIP movie elements of #701 (first Scorpion movie) nor the magical mythical female avenger of the later parts of #701 and all of Jail house 41 (second Scorpion movie). The actress is is of course beautiful but
much less memorable than Meiko Kaji (of #701 and jail-house 41).
Rather there are more non-prison scenes which seem influenced by HK girl w/gun movies and MTV. There are still some fun WIP movie bits and pieces, in particular a group Japanese hip bath in the prison, and some modest medical inspection strippings. There are also many sex scenes with varying degrees of nakedness.

These movies are definitely not classic WIPs, though certainly watchable. It also occurs to me that VJs might find the quick cuts of weird flashy naughtiness useful, though I of course do not encourage any copyright violations.

4 out of 5 stars If it only didn't have that ONE scene..........2003-10-19

This series is pretty good. It's not spectacular, but it'll keep you entertained. I liked the DVD as a whole, but there's one scene where two people have sex, not rape (which happens often), in the movie. It was pointless sex. But the series starts and ends pretty good. I recommmend this to someone who needs something to keep them from being bored.

4 out of 5 stars New School Japanese Women In Prison Fun!.......2002-06-30

Okay, let me preface this review by saying this disc is by no means classic material... ... DOUBLE FEATURE. That means two times the Chiharu Kimatsu than your ordinary CK DVD (not that there are any others at current, but I wish there were). Based solely on the fact that you get two pretty entertaining movies for the price of one, ought to sell those on the fence of a purchase. I will say this: The first part of the double feature is better than the second simply because it's a simple setup for a story that gets a little out of hand and overexplained in the second part. But what the hell. It's exploitation, it's supposed to go over the top. It makes it more fun that way. I'm pretty surprised more people haven't reviewed this disc. Call up the fellers, crack a few bronsons, and have some whoops and giggles. It's pretty candy, if you ask me.
