House of the Fulci zombie!.......2007-01-29
I am proud to say I have seen about every zombie movie that at least I'm aware of. With over at least a hundred zombie movies to my viewing credit from all over the globe over the last forty years. I can say that this is
one of my more favored picks. I'm not sure why. This movie is not particularly frightening per say. But it does have a beautiful eerie quality that sometimes get's lost with new cinema. Fulci is known as the godfather of gore, and out of all of his several zombie movies, this is my favorite.
I appreciated the asthetic camera angles and the storyline was not bad.
True it can be a bit campy, and somewhat slow. But in the context of the times, and it being a laregly italian film, I thought it stood on it's own. I even bought a t-shirt of the movie. If you enjoy Fulci's brand of zombie gore, I do suggest giving this one a try.
If you do not like slower paced zombie films then I'd avoid it.
But trust me...I have seen alot worse...even from Fulci.
Fulci Lives .......2006-11-06
Lucio Fulci is one of the best Italian directors right next to Argento(my favorite), and the Bavas. Besides gore he has done giallo(New York Ripper), fantasy(Conquest), and action(Contraband). House by the Cemetery is in his top 4 along with City of the Living Dead, Zombie, and The Beyond. He will always be in my heart. Now onto the review.
House by the Cemetery is about a family who moves into a house in New England which used to belong to DR. Fruedstein , who is now using dead peoples cells to stay alive. Many murders occur in the house up until the disturbing ending.
Gore-good amount.the quality is also nice.we have a knife through the back of the head, a decapitation which begins with a brutal throat slashing, a store dummy that has its head cut off and for some reason bleeds?, a woman stabbed repeatedly with a fireplace poker(blood squirts everywhere), a stabbed bat, a throat ripping, a severed hand, a nasty view of dead bodies with organs and dripping blood, and some other things.
plot-good for a fulci film
sound-nothing wrong
picture- have seen better
extras-not loaded but some nice stuff like trailers and stills
overall- a great movie and purchase. just be sure to get the anchor bay version because it is the most uncut. see ya.
My Favorite Fulci FIlm (so Far).......2006-09-18
I have Zombi and then I picked up this flick (House by the Cemetary). I liked House...better than Zombi. It just had a better story and acting, but, like Zombi, had great gore for it's time. It does have an annoying bratty little blond boy in it, but adds it the films campyness. I wasn't really impressed with ZOMBI, but figured I'd give another Fulci flick a try..glad I did=gonna check out more of them in the future..

Description
The Ultimate Gorehound House Party From The Director Of ZOMBIE And THE BEYOND
A young family moves from their cramped New York City apartment to a spacious new home in New England. But this is no ordinary house in the country: the previous owner was the deranged Dr. Freudstein, whose monstrous human experiments have left a legacy of bloody mayhem. Now, someone - or something - is alive in the basement, and home sweet home is about to become a horrific hell on earth.
Catriona MacColl (CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD),
Paolo Malco (THE NEW YORK RIPPER),
Ania Pieroni (TENEBRE) and
Dagmar Lassander (FORBIDDEN PHOTOS OF A LADY ABOVE SUSPICION) star in this outrageous Italian shocker from
Lucio Fulci, `The Godfather of Gore.' Considered to be one of the master's last great films, THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY is presented complete and uncut, featuring a mind-blowing onslaught of throat-ripping, skull-knifing, maggot-spewing and more!

A Not Unsuccessful Lovecraftian Tribute.......2007-05-18
This is the third in a loose trilogy of films by Italian master of the macabre Lucio Fulci set in New England that evoke the uncanny and cosmic terrors of H.P. Lovecraft. The other two films "City of the Living Dead" and "The Beyond" are quite a bit better than "House by the Cemetery", but that doesn't mean this film is totally without merit. At times Fulci succeeds very well in creating an atmosphere of dread and fear, and the film is not without some subtle moments of terror, due mainly to an eerie soundtrack and a couple of creepy kids. But fans of Fulci and Italian horror cinema in general are not interested in the type of subtle scares one might find in English ghost stories; instead his films are marked by unusual levels of graphic violence. Although this film is not without its moments (throats ripped out, maggot ridden bodies and decapitation), the violence seems quite muted compared to other Fulci films. Fulci is perhaps aiming too strongly for the atmosphere of Lovecraft, and subsequently forgets to invest in his film the graphic and absurdly violent scenes which have afforded his work a cult following. The film as is usually the case with Fulci makes little sense and is full of continuity errors, its difficult to know whether this is down to bad editing, or an intentional effort to create an uncanny world in which time and space are confused, personally I prefer the latter possibility. There has always been something dream like and hallucinatory about Italian horror cinema and this film doesn't disappoint on that level. By combing Freud and Frankenstein in the name of the films ostensible monster/zombie, the rotting cadaver of the once great scientist Dr. Freudstein provides an interesting connection between psychoanalysis and the scientist playing god. In light of Fulci's career post "House by the Cemetery", this has to be considered one of his last decent efforts.
This DVD re-issue is by Blue Underground, who seem to have acquired some of the titles of Anchor Bay's back catalogue for re-issue. My only main grumble is with the audio, which is particularly tinny, other than that this is a good reasonably priced package.
A movie I like a lot more than I should.......2007-05-14
The House by the Cemetery was released during the height of Lucio Fulci's career. From between 1979-1983 is the era Fulci will forever be known for. While he had some solid movies prior to that it's really the 79-83 era is what he will be remembered for.
The House by the Cemetery might be one of the weaker ones from that era, but yet there is something strangely compelling about this movie. Maybe it's the fact the movie is so incoherent at times and that it's sort of laughable. Or maybe it's the unintentional comedy like the bat attack scene.
Lucio Fulci in my opinion was a director who was able to build some good suspense and tension due to his visual style. Even in some of his lesser movies he was able to make something out of nothing even if he was unable to maintain it. In The House by the Cemetery some of that can be found.
But the biggest downfall of the movie is the really poor dubbing for Giovanni Frezza who will forever be known to hardcore horror fans as Bob. Apparently he was dubbed by a woman, but regardless the dubbing was just bad. Any scene he was in was comedy gold. This, in a way adds to the movie, but also takes away from scenes that might have played out better with some better dubbing.
Lucio Fulci was a filmmaker who can be really hit or miss and sometimes even in the same movie. The House by the Cemetery is one of those movies.
The opening scene was quite effective; the set up was great and it had a creepy feel to it. The pacing here is slow; after the opening kill scene we don't get another for a good 40-min. The movie is filled with a lot of talk and a lot of scenes that never really go anywhere despite a build up with the characters and some interesting ideas.
Lucio Fulci seems to be building up something with some of the characters, but yet it never comes to be. The babysitter Anne seems to have some kind of big revelation coming, but it never happens. Any scene she is in has this weirdness to it, but yet nothing comes to be.
What makes this movie so inserting is it's sort of a zombie movie due to the Dr. Freudstein character, but it's also sort of a slasher movie and than throw in some supernatural haunting. The House by the Cemetery had an interesting idea, but sadly the movie is so incoherent with nothing really explained everything is sort of lost.
The House by the Cemetery easily rates as one of Fulci's most incoherent movies; nothing really makes any sense at all nothing is really explained. Bottom line is what little plot we get is very messy. The screenplay was written by Giorgio Mariuzzo, Lucio Fulci and Dardano Sacchetti.
If the other 2 writers sound familiar they should. Both have worked with Lucio Fulci several times with Sacchetti being the man responsible for several of Fulci's more popular titles.
While Fulci manages to build some suspense due to the messy plot and poor dubbing it's hard to sustain it and the scenes start to become funny for the wrong reasons. There was some decent suspense and in my opinion the final act is actually quite solid. Like I said Lucio Fulci was the type of director who could be very hit or miss and sometimes even in the same movie.
Gore-hounds though fear not, when there is a gore scene Fulci doesn't hold back at all. While some dub this his goriest I have to disagree. The gore is excellent done by the always reliable and much underrated Giannetto De Rossi. Not Fulci's goriest, but when there is gore it will please the fans.
Most of the cast are Fulci regulars; many of them have done several movies with Fulci with Katherine MacColl probably being the most well known.
Despite all the flaws of The House by the Cemetery I couldn't help, but really enjoy the movie. As I stated earlier sure the movie is incoherent nothing makes sense. Some of the characters seem to have some kind of revelation ready to come out and it never does. But I was really enjoying this movie. Maybe it was the flaws that make this movie so much fun?
The look of the movie was excellent; like I said before Fulci had a great visual style and along with cinematographer Sergio Salvati who worked with Lucio Fulci quite a few times really create a great look for the movie.
There are a lot of scenes that have a great creepy feel and the overall tone of the movie is well done. The House by the Cemetery featured a lot of people from past Lucio Fulci movies, which helps the movie, but one would expect a bit more seeing as these people done some great work with Fulci.
In many ways this is one of Lucio Fulci's weaker efforts from this era and it's also one of his strongest at the same time. The House by the Cemetery has a great and creepy feel, but the plot is incoherent and revelations that seem to be waiting to come out never do. And the ending is also a bit complicated. But despite all this I highly enjoyed this movie.
Fulci purists will probably get enjoyment out of this so if you like his work I would say this movie is worth seeking out. For those who don't like Fulci's work this probably won't be the movie to change your opinion of him.
My review for House by the Cemetery may not sound positive at all, but I did enjoy the movie a lot more than maybe I should have. Despite all the flaws there is just something really creepy about House by the Cemetery. As stated before in many ways this is one of Fulci's weaker and stronger efforts.

Customer Reviews:
Are these two films from Lucio Fulci any good?.......2005-07-13
You might ask your self if any of these films are good and I would tell you offcourse they are, the house by the cemetery and the beyond are two magnificant horror films that were done when Lucio Fulci was still good. What I like about Lucio Fulci's films especialy these two is that he adds a lot of atmosphere and a sense of darkness that the characters cannot seem to escape from he also manages to add some really creepy music which helps and he also adds a lot of gore which made the horror fans name him the godfather of gore or something like that. Anyway if you are interested in watching any of his films then this is a good place to start, Anchor bay has done a great job with restoring these films the picture quality is very high and they have added a lot of special features and comentary tracks for both films, here is a short summary of both films:-
The beyond, when a young woman moves into an old hotel which she has inhereted, she thinks everything is going well. She plans to make a new life for herself but doesn't realise that the hotel has been the gateway to hell in years past and some potentially terrible things are about to happen. Alot of confusing scenes happen in this film but it is fun to watch, with a lot of wierd characters like the house keeper and that little girl. What I got when I watched this film was alot of gore and blood and a bad story line so I hated it but when I watched it a second time I liked it more as the death scenes were pretty cool like the acid melting face and a gory dog attack scene and eye gougings and a lot of zombies that appeare at random although there were scenes that were unconvincing like the spiders that start eating a guys face. David Warbeck also stars in this film what his character does not realise is that he continues to shoot the zombies in the stomach when it was clear that they die with one shot to the head!....
The house by the cemetery, when a family take up residence in an eerie house by a cemetery some bizare events begin to occur as there seems to be an evil being that lives in the basement. while watching this film I expected the usual dark atmosphere and gory death scenes and I was not dissapointed but one thing that has bothered me alot was that annoying young blonde kid, where did they get this brat otherwise it was a pretty good film but not as good as the beyond infact I will give this film 4 stars. The evil Dr.freudstien who is like a frankenstien monster I think I'm not quite sure what he is gets to kill some people that enter his house so you get alot of sick and twisted death scenes like the one involving the lady that gets punctured and stabbed by a fire place poker and an awsome decapatation scene. As you can tell unlike other italian horror films these two films were creepy as hell and I deffinently recomend this to all horror fans and stop watching crap like gothika or house of wax the remake god dammit!.
Good movies.......2005-03-07
I like "The Beyond " better than "house by the Cemtary". But both are good films . My main point of this reveiw is to let you people know that "the Beyond" can be found in best buy for $9.99 and "house by the cemetary" can be found really anywhere for $6.99. So im just trying to save you money instead of spendingjust over $20 for the 2 you can spend about 14 or 15 $.
above average offerings.......2004-02-09
Farming the zombie genre is a daunting task. There are just too many bad films out there made by folks who think zombies equate to reddish liquid splashed liberally on bodies and the surfaces of walls. Not so! Suspense and atmosphere are the very foundation of eerie, something only the true auteur can accomplish.
Lucio Fulci manages to squeak through with these well above average offerings. The Beyond truly deserves a spot as one of the best zombie movies of all time spot, falling closely behind the Living Dead trilogy. Its bold attempt at portraying hell and the realization of an apocalyptic zombie holocaust is this movie's real worth. While Fulci is popular for his gore, one seeking to find realism ought to look elsewhere. Evil Dead (pt. 1) is often more realistic. Lastly, The Beyond, like most horror movies, suffers from little (not no) plot. My advice is to go with it. There's enough visual appeal to make the unexplained forgiveable. Grade: B+
The House By The Cemetery suffers from an obnoxious little boy and a secret plot. I say secret because either something was lost in the translation (was this dubbed?), or Fulci just didn't want to share. The basic message I got was that children were evil. Granted. As for the zombie himself (yes, only one) the question of "why" is never answered. Again I say, accept it all or don't bother with the film. As for the obnoxious little boy (spoiler alert), his voice is so grating you actually wish he was the only character that died. We, the viewer, are not so lucky. I had to fast forward a lot of this film because it failed to keep me interested. Regardless, a hardcore fan would still like this one. Grade: C+
If you're only interested in getting good zombie films, go with the Beyond. If you're interested in getting a complete zombie collection, save some cash and buy this set.
Strange endings.......2004-01-29
While watching the Lucio Fulci Collection on DVD, there are no happy endings in either "House by the Cemetery" or "The Beyond". In fact I found the end of HBTC to be quite baffling. Why was the film not prolonged, as to see what actually happened to Freudstein? Bob "the little boy" escapes Freudstein's clutches, while both his parents are killed. He's then met by the evil Dr Freudstien's spirit wife and child, whom both are kind. They then walk off, hand in hand into the sunset. The end.
As much as I expected some justice to be done towards Freudstein, it never did happen. It just makes you wonder why? And, there was no House by the Cemetery 2 to my knowledge? The ends justify the means certainly don't pertain to the ending of this film. Very strange.
2 Fulci Classics For The Price Of 1!.......2003-10-29
1981 was a terrific year for Lucio Fulci. In that year, between the releases of Argento's INFERNO in 1980 (the same year Fulci made CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD/THE GATES OF HELL) and TENEBRE in 1982 (the same year Fulci made THE NEW YORK RIPPER and MANHATTAN BABY), Fulci ruled Italian horror with back-to-back masterpieces. Of course, I'm talking about THE BEYOND and THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, two of Fulci's most popular horror films that only get better with age!
THE BEYOND, in my humble opinion, is an extremely close second to SUSPIRIA as the greatest Italian horror movie of all time! In it, Catriona/Katherine MacColl renovates a Louisiana hotel she inherited only to discover that it rests on one of the seven gateways to Hell! Throughout the ensuing hour-and-a-half, pun intended, all Hell breaks loose, with the most gruesome imagery Fulci has ever committed to celluloid (e.g., crucifixion, acid bath, tarantulas, a head explosion, and Fulci's trademark eyeball violence), and it all looks totally realistic and awesome, right up there with any of Tom Savini's work! I really loved MacColl's prescence in THE BEYOND, as she's just so lovely to look at; John Saxon-lookalike David Warbeck is also really cool here as well (he was in Fulci's previous Edgar Allen Poe offshoot THE BLACK CAT, also in 1981), especially when dropping bullets through the barrel of his gun. I got the totally awesome soundtrack at my first horror convention a few months ago.
THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY also has MacColl, this time as a mother who, along with her doctor husband and son, move into the titular residence in Boston. The doctor is continuing the research conducted by a colleague who offed himself; the research is on one Dr. Freudstein, whose unorthodox methods involved killing people to keep himself alive. More Fulci mayhem such as a knife through the head (with the blade sticking out of the mouth), decapitation, and a neck-ripping. I got a HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY t-shirt featuring the 1984 poster artwork (on the Diamond release) at my first horror convention a few months ago, the safest representation of Fulci that you can get!
You must get this 2-pack if you want definitive Fulci. THE BEYOND has a terrific audio commentary by MacColl and Warbeck (a few weeks before Warbeck died) which is amusing and informative, among a slew of awesome extras. THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY has a photo and still gallery set to one of the creepy compositions in the score. This is a double-dose of Fulci mayhem at its greatest, most Argento-like; a definite must-watch!
