5 out of 5 stars Pink Panther is funny for all........2007-06-02

This is a great collection of Pink Panther cartoons. I was impressed by the length and volume of this dvd, But the icing on the cake is these are still FUNNY as hell. My nephews one 4 and one 10 both laugh at this together....along with me of course. This is great value and fun .

5 out of 5 stars LIfe in pink.......2007-05-14

I thought I was the one who would enjoy this DVD the most, since Pink Panther was my favorite cartoons when I was little, well Surprise!...My 5 years old son fell in love with this Pink Panther collection! A good to have DVD.

5 out of 5 stars My grandchildren loved it!.......2007-05-07

On a recent visit to see my grandchildren I noticed they were watching the old Pink Panther cartoons, that I watched as a child, and they were laughing and giggling. I decided to buy them the DVD so they could watch Pink Panther anytime they wanted. Great to watch my old favorites which now I share with my grandchildren!

4 out of 5 stars The Original Cool Cat.......2007-03-28

From the beautiful graphics on the package cover to the 27 cartoons within, this classic release is in every way a delight. So why not five stars for the felicitous feline? Simply because of the annoying ad you have to skip every time to watch a cartoon. What's more, the ad urges viewers not to steal movies. Ironically, it's addressed to people who actually bought the DVD, the only audience you can be sure didn't steal these cartoons by illegally downloading them.

So this becomes a prolonged exercise in punishing the innocent (I've checked two other volumes in the series and they both have the ad). Why doesn't MGM pay to put their anti-theft message on television where the guilty parties can view it instead of making the buyer pay to see it? I don't know if the deluxe set with all the individual discs in it also has the ad on every disc, but the menu opens with the same graphics, so I suspect it does.

Although I waited for this release with anticipation, it's not worth it having to skip the ad every time to get to the cartoons. Enough is enough. It's time to rebel. As with Shout Factory releases, I will not be running to buy any more MGM cartoons on DVD until I know they are not bogged down with ads.

Patch Adams raises two schools of thought: There are those who are inspired by the true story of a troubled man who finds happiness in helping others--a man set on changing the world and who may well accomplish the task. And then there are those who feel manipulated by this feel-good story, who want to smack the young medical student every time he begins his silly antics.

Staving off suicidal thoughts, Hunter Adams commits himself into a psychiatric ward, where he not only garners the nickname "Patch," but learns the joy in helping others. To this end, he decides to go to medical school, where he clashes with the staid conventions of the establishment as he attempts to inject humor and humanity into his treatment of the patients ("We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease," he declares throughout the film). Robin Williams, in the title role, is as charming as ever, although someone should tell him to broaden his range--the ever-cheerful do-gooder à la Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society is getting a little old. His sidekick Truman (Daniel London) steals the show with his gawky allure and eyebrows that threaten to overtake his lean face--he seems more real, which is odd considering that Patch Adams does exist and this film is based on his life. Monica Potter is the coolly reluctant love interest, and she makes the most of her one-dimensional part. While moments of true heartfelt emotion do come through, the major flaw of this film is that the good guys are just so gosh-darn good and the bad ones are just big meanies with no character development. Patch Adams, though, does provide the tears, the giggles, and the kooky folks who will keep you smiling at the end. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars Not-That-Sugary Look At A Sweet-Hearted Man.......2007-09-17

There are a lot of sugary clichés I could use - in a sincere way - to describe this story about a doctor with a good heart who truly believes in the healing power of laughter. Based on a real-life person (who looks a lot wackier than Robin Williams, who plays him in this movie), the story has its usual rebel fights-the- straight-laced-establishment cliché but is a warm, sentimental film that can't help but make you feel really good when it's all over. It's hardly all sugar, either, as there are not only frustrations but an immensely-shocking tragedy in here.

For a nice "family" movie, the profanity and sexual innuendos are a little much, so I don't think is one for the kids. (They wouldn't like it anyway.) Adults shouldn't mind. The language isn't that bad, anyway.

This is an inspiring story with comedy and romance and drama. That's what makes it so effective: a good combination of genres. One minute you're laughing, a few minutes later you have tears in your eyes.

A wonderful story, nicely acted and nicely told. Check out the bonus features. If you think Robin Williams is strange, wait until you see the real Patch Adams!.

5 out of 5 stars Patch Adams.......2007-09-11

Just relax, seat back and enjoy the real life of Patch and learn to touch lifes.

4 out of 5 stars Forget the critics, this one's mostly a winner..........2007-09-08

Positive or negative audience "hype" and critical praise or thumbs down have rarely had much of an effect on me. Audiences can often get it all wrong in my view, or all right, and so it goes as well for "professional" movie reviewers. Most of the latter got this one all wrong in blasting it as most have. To me however, while certainly with flaws, this movie aims straight for the heart, and gets things right more often than not. It is both a drama and a comedy, and while there are some rather jarring cuts between the two, in the end, this film's heart (and socio-political statement) is certainly in the right spot throughout. And more true today (unfortunately) than when it was first released or realized and lived out by the real life person upon which this is all based, "Patch Adams."

The fantastic opening scene and voice-over narrative by Robin Williams, accompanied by simple piano music (which swells to orchestral), introduces us to Patch (as he would later be called), a sad, depressed, self-pitying, aging young man on his way to nowhere, and to the "nut house" after a failed suicide attempt. He "self-admits" himself to a hospital psycho ward, after having tried almost every remedy and "prescription drug" (evidenced in his bathroom medicine chest), given him by the established medical "industry." What he finds there, and later, and what he discovers about himself and others, remains a searing indictment of that "industry" and what is and is not considered "normal." Institution-wise...

Those institutions are truly a daily, functioning contradiction. On the one hand, hospitals and doctors have as their guiding principle (or so they say), the noblest of goals. To treat people in need, to care for the sick and for those without the means to care for themselves, and to acknowledge that we are all basically just human beings living out our lives together in a "society" where the "Golden Rule" is actually the only one which matters. But who, if they've been run through the impersonal, profit-oriented HMO horror that is the state of today's "medical care," who, if they've ever spent any amount of time "in the hospital," or fighting with cold, impersonal "health insurance" agencies and agents and unreasonable costs, would agree with the notion that "altruistic" and "loving" personal care shouldn't play a large part in any truly civilized health care "system?"

Only but the most cold-hearted cynic about life and the sanctity of that, and those who consider the medical profession as just another "business," could deny that increasing the "personalizing" of the doctor-patient relationship, could do anything but positive things. Old habits and customs, old traditions and ways of thinking die hard however. Is and was the "philosophy" of Dr. Hunter "Patch" Adams really all that bizarre or unworkable? Or is and was it an attempt to just return to the "good old days" when a doctor would actually get his/her butt over to your house and tend to your sick child or you or a loved one, because they gave a damn? Or "take your call." Or fight against the medical corporate interests that inhibit the very practice and art of medicine and healing itself? Because it was (and should supposedly remain) their very oath to do so?

In an early part of the film, a psychiatrist who is supposed to be "helping" Patch and at the very least, "listening" to him, fiddles around with his coffee, avoids eye contact, and eventually doesn't even hear what Patch says. A bit later, Patch opts to dismiss himself from the institution, for the obvious reason that he's just not getting any true medical help there. The psychiatrist, ego puffed up, tells Patch that he disagrees with the early release, and that after all, "he" is the doctor. In a wonderful, fleeting, but finely powerful moment, Patch replies, "Yeah, but you suck at it." Patch says he thinks he can do better, and at a much later than normal age, applies to and is accepted into a prestigious medical school, and goes about proving that the personal touch is the most sound one a doctor can give to their patients. He does so with humor, and various more touching serious moments, but is fought every step along the way by the university and medical "establishment." Patch's attempts to fight along the way, and his romantic interests and encouragements, disappointments, and eventual realizations, make up the bulk of the film. And this real life story is nothing but an inspiration, especially to those who just know in their hearts that there is something dreadfully wrong with the American health care "industry, but that there just may be hope, if doctors were only to reach the awareness and enlightenment about the doctor-patient relationship that Patch did. As both a patient and a doctor.

While there are many missteps along the way, particularly in the often too-strident aspects of switching from drama to comedy, as well as turning from a personal story along the way into more of a broader, more philosophical and political denunciation of the university-trained and health-care "commerce" without needed cinematic transitional techniques, most of this works beautifully, and touchingly.

The film reminded me of many of my favorite movies of the past along the general "theme" celebrating the wisdom and morality of the common, caring individual caught up in a crazy world, including "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Next," "Forrest Gump," and "The Grapes of Wrath." While admittedly over the top and bordering on pretentious at times, "Patch Adams" remains one of my favorite films of all time, despite drawbacks. I think this movie should be required viewing for medical school students, who may not, like the critics, "get it." In addition, they should all have to watch it again and again until they do. And that goes for dental students/dentists as well.

A Golden Globe nominee for best picture in its time, and rightly so.

5 out of 5 stars Robin Williams Shows He can Act! .......2007-06-04

The movie has a great story and message - then add to that the all-around acting talent of Robin Williams and you have got a great telling of true story. It is entertaining and inspiring!

I serve on a a board for a non-profit organization that is trying to help today's veterans with PTSD - and Patch Adams is also on that advisory board with me. He continues to care and continues to give service. The man is for real.

5 out of 5 stars Patch Adams Review.......2007-03-23

Robin Williams is amazing in this role. We just don't realize his talent as an actor. I just loved the movie.

The Hank Ketcham comic strip about a mischievous boy named Dennis Mitchell (Mason Gamble) becomes a film directed by Nick Castle (The Last Starfighter) based on a weak script by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club). Gamble is fine and Walter Matthau is persuasive as the grouchy neighbor Mr. Wilson, but Hughes spoils everything by throwing in a formulaic subplot about a criminal (Christopher Lloyd) who doesn't know what he's getting into by abducting Dennis. Been there, done that. --Tom Keogh

Jackass Number Two could be alternately titled " From Bowties to Bunny Ears: What Will Chris Pontius Be Wearing Next?" Like the first Jackass movie, Johnny, Bam, Chris, Steve-O and the gang are all here. This "sequel" is full of stunts, pranks and one-liners, and contains more defecation, more male nudity, more scream-worthy moments and of course more uncontrollable laughter. The film opens with a rather well directed cinematic piece: the entire Jackass gang running from a stampede of bulls. From there it takes off into the hysterically exhausting world of Jackass. The bulls are actually in quite a few stunts, one of which has "leader" Johnny Knoxville using himself as a red flag, and getting spearheaded by a charging bull. Ah, good times. Some of the stunts include: "Beehive Limo", "Fart Mask", "Red Rocket" and a fake terrorist plot which boasts the improve line, "Where I'm going, I don't need luggage." Bam gets branded, they fish for sharks with Steve-O as bait, Johnny catches Anacondas with his bare hands, the list goes on. The gem in this collection of antics has to be the offensive interactions with the innocent people on the street by Johnny Knoxville and director/actor Spike Jonez, while disguised as a very old man and woman. Celebrity guests partaking in stunts include extreme sports legends Tony Hawk and Mat Hoffman. The movie culminates in a beautifully choreographed, fantastical and dangerous musical number not to be missed. Throughout the movie it is apparent that the Jackass gang is older and a little more worn, especially when Bam pleads, "Please God, don't let there be a "Jackass 3". For fans of the TV series and the films, a trilogy may be just what the doctor ordered. The DVD extras (deleted scenes, unrated material and two pretty funny music videos) are more of the same and worth the watch, though some of it is not for the faint hearted. --Rachel Moss

Description

Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O and the entire crew from the popular MTV franchise return in the most insane DVD of the year, jackass number two. Available in both rated and "too hot for theaters" unrated versions, jackass number two pushes the limits with all-new stunts, pants-wetting practical jokes, fun with bears, bees, snakes, bulls, sharks…and other REALLY bad ideas.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars MORE RIOTOUS SADO-MASOCHISTIC SLACKER MAYHEM!!.......2007-08-30

Exactly what you expect a Jackass movie to be. The formula remains the same, some stunts work and some don't, but the winners far outweigh the dud's and the best of them are gut bustingly funny.

Knoxville, Bam Margera and Co unleash Hell upon themselves with a certain manical glee. But more importantly they have produced a sequel that's much better than the original on every level. Faster, funnier and even more disgusting, Jackass fan's wouldn't have it any other way.

For nay sayers, this maybe confirm the decline of western civilisation, but that's also the main reason to watch it as well. One of 2006's best films. Critic's be damned!! Utterly incorrigible.

4 out of 5 stars Sophomore slump [3.5 stars].......2007-08-13

I'm a huge fan of the Jackass TV show and the first movie. Some of the funniest things I've ever seen have been done by the Jackass crew.

Jackass Two has some very funny moments, but the gross-out factor, for my taste, is overemphasized. This movie's short on the kind of pranks and jokes which, I think, made Jackass brilliant.

If you like the show or the first movie at all, and you're not easily offended or grossed out, you should see this one as well. Just don't expect the franchise to have improved.

5 out of 5 stars Good Not So Clean Fun.......2007-08-12

Okay....let's say it right now and get it over with. There shouldn't be a Jackass Number 3 because, based on what you see here, there is a bar that probably can't be hurdled.

Knoxville does the impossible and rides a giant rocket a la Wile E. Coyote. Can that be surpassed? Pontius creates all new internet debates as to whether or not a certain stunt qualified as bestiality or a simple homosexual act. I don't think anyone is willing to follow in those footsteps.

Great stuff in this movie....I nearly wet myself with laughter watching the John Waters/Make WeeMan Disappear trick. Other good material consisted of the Pontius/Knoxville/angry tree boa Puppet Show, bungee jumping with Preston and WeeMan, the Musical Number, fun with cattle, and don't forget the bonus material! A lot of footage that didn't make it into the film itself, but....educational to say the least. Anything where John Waters is present is going to be...different, let us say.

My one real dislike of the movie came about during the Terror Taxi segment. The stunt went on too long, and in light of the world we live in today, not all that funny. Guys, putting shaved body hair on someone's face and calling it a fake beard is hilarious....getting into a cab going to an airport and making veiled references is just plain stupid and not very sensitive. Another skit(s) that made me think along the lines of 'didn't we just do this about 10 minutes ago?' were the ones involving Old People with Exposed Body Parts. They got redundant and in my opinion distracted somewhat from the rest of the movie with their frequency.

Based on the above dislikes this movie would only rate about 4 stars, but the bonus material more than pays for the dvd and makes up for those shortcomings, hence a full 5 for this product.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!!.......2007-07-15

I thought this movie was so funny and just a little gross in some parts. But, I think it's definitely worth buying! Funnier than the first movie and the stunts are more dangerous. There is a ton of bonus features that are just as funny as the movie too! A must have for your dvd collection!

5 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure for my "child within".......2007-06-30

Ok, this movie is pointless, stupid, violent, at times very gross and shows alot of skin and is alot of fun. I really like the jackass movies even at my age a man in his early 40s. It really does bring out the "child within" and adolscent side of an adult that can be alot of fun. They do the things that you were afraid of doing when you were their age and getting hurt. Yeah, you can watch the movie, do the things that they are doing (in your mind) and you are not the one that is getting hurt or making a fool of himself. What a bonus!!!! LOL Ok, seriously this movie is alot of foolish fun. See it as such when you view it and never take it seriously. I will say that you should watch the special features "outtakes and deleted scenes" because there are alot of stunts that are not shown in the movie plus some good frontal male nudity to boot. I highly recommend this movie to anyone that really likes to cut loose within thier own home safely on the couch and likes to laugh their butts off!!!!

A bittersweet film about a Chinese-American family living in New York, Red Doors offers moments of humor as well as emotional triumph. Though the Wongs may appear to be the perfect nuclear family to outsiders, they're really just your typical dysfunctional American family. Helmed by first-time director Georgia Lee, this indie film is to be applauded for presenting a different type of Asian-American family than the model one that's been mythologized in the media. Dad (Tzi Ma) is suicidal. Eldest daughter Samantha (Jacqueline Kim) gifts him with therapy sessions, middle daughter Julie (Elaine Kao) is a confused lesbian, and Katie (Lee's real-life sister Kathy Shao-Lin Lee), the youngest, has a disturbing relationship with a neighborhood boy that involves dead rats, explosives, and no sense of boundaries. Therapy actually wouldn't be wasted on Katie, who often appears emotionally dead. When she catches her father trying to hang himself (one of 30 or 40 suicide attempts, as he tells his therapist), she doesn't blink an eye. Rather, she calmly announces that lunch is ready. In their own ways, the family members come to terms with their individual crises. The actors, especially the expressive Ma, are convincing in their roles. But overall, Lee doesn't provide enough cohesiveness with either the story or the pacing to make viewers truly care about the complicated Wongs. --Jae-Ha Kim

This has lots of magic in it! Quite a few laughs during this journey into a time of change in this Asian American family.

5 out of 5 stars Soo funny, romantic, and just keeps you interested.......2007-06-26

i really enjoyed this movie, it has 4 different story lines involving the father of the family and his 3 daughters, each coping with their own issues. Sam struggles with her boring predictable new york life and soon to be husband, julie can't find a good asian boy and ends up falling for the famous actress who is prepping for a film at julie's hospital, and katie keeps getting in trouble for pranking a boy she likes. Their father has just entered retirement and keeps trying to kill himself. Well, it makes for a movie that shows that no family is perfect, not matter how much they seem to be, and it shows that everyone can be their own person and find happiness. It's a very interesting, creative, and funny movie that you shouldn't miss.

3 out of 5 stars Really should have been a daytime soap episode... .......2007-05-27

That's what I wrote in some notes I took at the time I saw this in theatre a few months ago, on a double bill with the delightful "Linda Linda Linda". I was obviously not the only one left cold -- even though "Red Doors" was the promoted 'feature' film (by a protege of Martin Scorsese yet) it was sparsely attended compared to the enthusiastic audiences for "Linda". I thought "I must just not get it" so went back for a second viewing .. and still don't get the enthusiasm the other Amazon user reviewers show for this film. (During the local showing, the Boston Globe reviewer was lukewarm to "Red Doors", as is the Amazon editorial reviiewer. So I'm not the only grumpy gus.) It's telling that three months later, I have little visual memory of "Red Doors", while "Linda..." is fresh in my mind. (I'm writing this from those notes.)

Not that "Red Doors" is bad. It has high ambitions, and there is much well done on a scene-by-scene basis, but somehow the various plot threads just do not gel into a coherent whole. And though the crew and cast all seem like nice people, to be honest the acting (or is it the script forcing the performance?) is often strained and awkward.

While not a fully mature Hollywood type film, it also lacks the spark that distinguishes the best freshman efforts and independent films. It's too much as if it was written from a paint-by-numbers box. The plot, the various elements, are cartoonish, in broad exaggerated strokes. Dad isn't merely depressed, but suicidal, and not in a cute fake "Harold and Maude" sort of way -- the only reason his suicide attempts don't work is a combination of bad luck and a seeming lack of energy to carry them out. Med student (intern?) Julie's affair is not just with one of the numerous women in the health care setting, but with a glamorous and famous actress. (Plus, even on two viewings, it's not clear if this is her first experience with another woman -- there's no sense of context.) Sam's blonde bombshell of a trophy fiancee is just too handsome, politically correctly sweet, and lifeless. And so on.

I'd really rate this about 3.5*, but rounded down to counteract the (to me) overenthusiastic 5* reviews. It's not like this is the first or only Asian-American family drama (see the wonderful "Double Happiness" with Sandra Oh, for one of many instances) and deserves bonus points for its uniqueness. It tries very hard, and maybe that's the problem -- it just doesn't flow.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and poignant.......2007-03-26

Red Doors is a film about a dysfunctional Chinese-American family living in a suburb in New York. The parents Ed Wong (Tzi Ma) and May-Li Wong (Freda Foh Shen) have three daughters: Sam (Jacqueline Kim) who is the oldest, Elaine Kao (Julie) is the middle child, and the youngest daughter is Katie (Kathy Shao-Lin Lee).

Ed had just retired and is trying to figure out how to excape the dullness of his life. His daughters are experiencing their own dysfunctional dramas.Sam is a business woman who is getting ready for her impending nuptials to Mark (Jayce Bartok) but when an old high school flame returns to town, Sam begins to question if she is ready for marriage. Julie who is a med student who is excelling at her studies but when it comes to her personal life, she doesn' t exactly get a passing grade due to her acute shyness. Her world is quickly turned upside down when she meets a popular actress named Mia Scarlett (Mia Riverton), and eventually becomes romantically involved with the actress. Katie is engaged in a prank war with her next door neighbor's son Simon (Sebastian Stan). When Ed suddenly up and leaves the family, the girls are forced to re-examine their lives and how to live on accordingly to what their heart says, not what is expected of them by family obligations (sort of an invisible fence).

I loved Red Doors. The home video footage of which I assume is from Georgia Lee's childhood added an authentic feel to the film. The ending though left me a bit unsatisfied. I hate it when films end on such a broad note. I was hoping that this film would have come to one of my local arthouse theatres but it didn't. I had to wait for it to come out on dvd. The relationship between Julie and Mia reminded me that of Wil and Vivian in the other Asian American film Saving Face(which is one of my all time faovrite films). It was complicated because Julie is more introverted while Mia is more extroverted, plus Mia was a popular actress which throws a monkey wrench into their relationship. Still the way the conflict was resolved between Julie and Mia was certainly more realistic than Wil and Vivan's. There is an obvious great love between the family members in the film especially between the mother and her daughters. I wish the film ended with some sort of resolution to the father's situation. Overall excellent film.

5 out of 5 stars Great story.......2007-03-10

This is a fantastic film that has clearly defined characters that I cared about and a story that kept me interested thoughout the film. It is really a slice of suburban life, kind of like American Beauty with a much happier ending. Check this out.

Pitting kids against grown-ups has always been a reliable source of comedy, and Big Fat Liar indulges the "smart kid vs. dumb adult" fantasy with infectious enthusiasm. In this case it's Frankie Muniz from TV's Malcolm in the Middle, playing a Michigan eighth-grader whose penchant for lying results in parental scorn when he claims that a Hollywood movie mogul (ace character actor Paul Giamatti) has stolen the kid's hastily written English essay and turned it into his upcoming summer blockbuster. The kid only wants to prove his honesty and recruits his girlfriend (spunky TV star Amanda Bynes) to beat the honcho on his Hollywood turf. Elaborate practical jokes and slapstick gags turn this kid stuff (scripted and produced by two former child stars) into an enjoyable send-up of Hollywood absurdity. When combined with Giamatti's mastery of slow-burning megalomania, the show-biz in-jokes and Home Alone-style anarchy make this a harmless diversion for the young and young-at-heart. --Jeff Shannon

I wouldn't call this movie a box office smash but this movie was quite funny. I give it four stars, enough to recommend worth watching it.

5 out of 5 stars Glad they had my movie.......2007-05-15

I had been looking for this movie for months and it came right up. I have watched the movie at least 5 times since reciving it. It was brand new like they promised. I have been nothing but happy.

5 out of 5 stars funny..........2007-05-04

Sweet revenge was never so much fun! It is the perfect tale of "what goes around, comes around!" Paul Giamatti is a funny actor and pulls this one off in excellence. A movie for the family!

5 out of 5 stars The Blue Man.......2007-03-20

My daugther loves this movie and watches it over and over again. Very good clean humor.

3 out of 5 stars Not a blockbuster hit but watchable.......2007-01-04

I bought the DVD of this movie a long time after its release, after hearing how awesome it was. It was cute and funny and all that but I don't think it was anything very special. It seemed to me like it was not Frankie Muniz's best work. He was loads better in the agent cody bank movies. Still, it's a fun family movie and kids from the ages of 5 to 10 will like it.

Some critics see the success of Jackass: The Movie as the last nail in the coffin of civilization, and they're probably right. This compilation of pain-inflicting stunts and embarrassing pranks has no artistic merit whatsoever--which doesn't keep it from being freakishly entertaining. Among other things, Johnny Knoxville and his posse get beaten up by a female kick-boxing champion; shoot bottle rockets out of their rectums; run amok in Japan wearing giant panda bear costumes; swim with whale sharks while holding pounds of brine shrimp in their swimsuits; and get done up in realistic old-age makeup so that they can race each other in motorized wheelchairs, among other goofs. It's a weird mixture of machismo and masochism, adolescent recklessness and frat boy homoeroticism, and someday someone will write a doctoral thesis about how Jackass relates to our safety-obsessed society. In the meantime, just enjoy. --Bret Fetzer

I remember a book my father had, dating from the end of WWII, titled, "Why Am I Laughing At This?" - and this movie left me with the same feeling, except that I really WAS laughing, sometimes to the point where I was crying!

Some of the very best parts of the movie are the reactions of the people around these guys!

My own favorites scenes were the snow cone; the merry-go-round, the golf course airhorn (which is destined to be one of the all-time comic classics!) and the falling-through-the-ceiling-at-the-office scene which follows immediately after; but the tour-de-force is the toy car x-ray (be sure to catch the reaction of the nurse when she reads the x-ray!).

I bought this, used, for $1.99. It's easily worth two bucks...

5 out of 5 stars sheshopsalot.......2007-08-09

i love these, but am grateful i do not have a son to stop from trying any of the stunts. I love all the guys, think they are crazy-but they have brought me to tears from laughing so hard.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the squeamish.......2007-05-19

This movie is as wrong as it is funny. Get a handful of your buddies, who happen to be nigh-fearless stuntmen and film yourselves doing incredibly stupid things (you know "guy stuff"), things we (guys) all do when we are with out dumb friends, and especially if we have been drinking. From the giant shopping cart (who hasn't wanted to do THAT at one point or another?) to the taser (ouch!), this is almost two hours of fun and gut-busting laughter as we get to be voyeurs of a frat party gone wild. This movie is worse than its reputation. Don't even bother watching it if you are the "sensible" type. It will just give you a conniption. However, if you are having a wild party and need something playing in the background, turn the sound down, the music up (loud) and pop this in the DVD. A good night's entertainment is guaranteed.

These guys are just plain crazy! Great movie to watch on depressing rainy sundays!

I discovered this show when I arrived in the UK a few years ago, and it quickly became a favorite (when I could find it.) When Vol I came out, I was quick to order several, one for me and others for gifts. I wasn't disappointed. Although the running time is short (IMO), what is there is great television. However, I'm disappointed with Vol II. There were a couple of repeat gags from Vol I, and several variations on a theme, which this show does a lot of. Overall, most of the gags in this volume fell flat for me. More grins than guffaws. Hoping vol III is a return to form....

Joy Ride follows the familiar conventions of road-movie thrillers with enough vitality to make everything old seem new again. A confirmed master of neo-noir suspense, director John Dahl (Red Rock West, The Last Seduction) sets a consistent tone of humor and horror as Lewis (Paul Walker) and his black-sheep brother Fuller (Steve Zahn) drive from Salt Lake City to pick up Lewis's friend Venna (Leelee Sobieski) in Boulder, Colorado. En route, they play a practical joke via CB radio, inviting vengeful terror as an unseen trucker (voiced with exquisite menace by Silence of the Lambs villain Ted Levine) pursues them with relentless, homicidal aggression. Inevitable comparisons to Steven Spielberg's Duel fail to appreciate Dahl's unique talent for energizing B-movie formulas while injecting his own brand of rib-tickling excitement. While Zahn deserves extra credit in his first top-billed role, Joy Ride wins a badge of honor for everyone involved. --Jeff Shannon

Description

It's all fun and games whene two brothers (Paul Walker and Steve Zahn) take off cross-country to bring home a pretty college friend (Leelee Sobieski). But the jokes end when a prank backfires and they find themselves stalked by a vengeful trucker who won't give up his relentless chase until somebody pays with their life.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good!.......2007-07-12

I remember watching the trailer for Joy Ride when it was first released in theatres. It looked creepy but I knew that most "scary" movies aren't all that good so I wasn't expecting much. Surprisingly, I found it be pretty good.

So what's this movie about? Two brothers pick up a female friend to go on a roadtrip. The car they're driving in is equipped with a CB radio that they decide to use as some sort of entertainment. As a joke, they pretend they're a lady looking for some action and they ultimately get the attention of a man using the handle "Rusty Nail". When Rusty Nail finds out that it was all a joke, he plots revenge and has the trio running for their lives.

Let's talk about the positives. First, the three main characters are played by relatively popular actors. The brothers are played by Steve Zahn and Paul Walker and the female friend is played by Leelee Sobieski. In general, the acting is pretty good and not over the top. Second, it's tough to come up with good storylines for "scary" movies but Joy Ride's storyline is fresh and rather entertaining. Furthermore, it makes the movie even more creepy because it's real and believable. What makes a scary movie really good is when you're terrified for the characters and this film had me wondering what I'd do in their situation. Lastly, the ending had me biting my nails in anticipation and it was perfect for the movie.

And what's not to like? Not much. The reason for the 4 stars is because I'm a huge horror movie fan and although a lot of scenes were creepy and obviously scary for the characters, it didn't instill enough terror in me to make me want to watch it over and over again.

If you're looking for a good thriller to watch on a rainy night, pick this one up.

3 out of 5 stars ENJOY THE RIDE.......2006-12-28

Paul Walker and Steve Zahn play two brothers on a road trip who make the mistake of their young lives when they make a fool of the wrong guy. Bored with the endless road between them and their destination, the brothers call up a random trucker on the CB and after a little role-playing hook the clueless Rusty Nail up with the imaginary Candy Cane. But when Rusty Nail finds somebody other than the girl of his dreams waiting for him at an out-of-the-way hotel, things quickly go from bad to worse, and before they know it the brothers are fleeing for their lives. And when Paul's lovely sort-of girlfriend, Lelee Sobieski, gets sucked into the game, Rusty Nail's revenge goes over the top.

Not bad as road thrillers go, JOY RIDE is pretty exciting and keeps the viewer guessing. The acting is quite good, especially from Lelee Sobieski, who plays a damsel in distress who is both vulnerable and strong, and the ambiguity of her relationship to both brothers adds an interesting dynamic to the plot. There's really no sense comparing it to Speilberg's DUEL--it's a much different movie despite some general similarities, and anyway DUEL is just much better. JOY RIDE is fun and suspenseful, but the humor often misfires and some of the twists are ridiculous and the ending is cheap. This is one of those movies I really enjoyed once but have no real desire to watch again--once you know how it turns out, there's no reason to go back for more. Recommended for a rental, but probably not a purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Good Movie!.......2006-10-31

Wow! I was very impressed and surprised by this one! I give the special features 10 STARS!

I have wanted to see this one since it was advertised on television many years ago. For some reason, I just never got around to it. I rarely see movies in the theater anymore, and I just never got around to seeing this on DVD. Recently, I went on a budgetary required fast of DVD purchases. I just recently joined an on-line DVD rental service, and this has been the best decision I've made, since deciding to marry my beautiful wife!

I am a big Paul Walker fan. He really is a good looking actor, and his acting skills match his good looks. He's a man's man, with a super smooth style. I have a feeling he's a lady's man, in real life! And Steve Zahn is hilarious! I think both of these parts were perfectly filled by these two young actors. Also outstanding is the young female part, played flawlessly by Leelee Sobieski.

I sometimes don't get a chance to view all the special features on a DVD, especially when I rent it, but thankfully I decided to try to view all of the special features on this one. And I'm so glad that I did! This DVD included three or four extended and alternate endings. I have a feeling many movies film extended and alternate endings, but choose not to include them on the DVD. I say shame on them. I really appreciate when the company chooses to include it, as, in my opinion, it adds tremendously to the viewing pleasure.

There are also three commentaries for the entire movie. I listened to the one from Steve Zahn, which was hilarious! He's a really funny guy.

The movie was very well done. The cinematography was excellent! I have a component Video set up on my HD TV, and the colors were brilliant and the scenery was beautiful throughout. In particular, the colors of the Police cars and the Motel lights throughout was brilliantly done. I like how this movie featured a part of America rarely seen in Hollywood films.

A great October movie to rent or purchase!

4 out of 5 stars "Duel" For The Millenium.......2006-07-17

In "Joy Ride", the Director John Dahl (Last Seduction, Red Rock West, Rounders)pounds you right from the beginning and never lets up.

It's "Duel" updated for the millenium and for a contemporary audience.

Two brothers, Paul Walker (Fast and The Furious) and Steve Zahn (Shattered Glass) take a road trip to pick up Walker's college girlfriend (Leelee Sobieski).

Using a CB radio, they play a practical joke on a trucker who turns out to be the biggest movie big rig psycho since Rutger Hauer planted a finger in C.Thomas Howell's french fries.

What the trucker, whose CB handle is "Rusty Nail" does to exact revenge keeps the audience on edge for the film's 97 minutes.

(Note: one of the sequences in the chillingly directed and edited climax cribs gleefully from "Silence of the Lambs")

Dahl pulls of the the difficult challenge of blending scares with a few laughs with little effort..he's a wildly talented director with a taste for hip, off beat material.

Dahl directs from a script by JJ Abrams ("Lost") and Clay Tarver

The voice of "Rusty Nail" is supplied by the great Ted Levine.

Note: not long before "Joy Ride" began shooting, the studio decided it wanted a different ending, supposedly a few alternate endings were shot, one of which, running 29 minutes, is included on the DVD which also includes Eric Roberts vocal audition as Rusty Nail...Roberts obviously lost the gig to Levine.

4 out of 5 stars "Candy Cane, come in Candy Cane...".......2006-07-15

'Joy Ride' casts Walker, Zahn and Sobieski in a suspence filled horror film about a crazed 18-wheeler. The film, directed by John Dahl, finds our young cast traveling cross country. Lewis (Walker) is dieing to get a chance to pursue his 'friend' Venna (Sobieski) so when given the chance to get some alone time with her he jumps at the chance....theres only one catch. Lewis's brother Fuller (Zahn) was just arrested and needs Lewis to bail him out, which he does, and Fuller ends up tagging along on Lewis's jouney to meet Venna. Along the way Fuller and Lewis play a joke on a trucker using the handle 'Rusty Nail' (Ted Levine) and they end up biting off more than they can chew, resulting in a panic driven adventure where they never quite know what's going to happen next. The film really doesn't pick up til towards the end, and the final frames are heart racingly intense, and while the acting could have used a boost (Walker is one of the worst young actors on the screen) at least Zahn and Sobieski hold there own (moreso Zahn who is everybit hilarious as he is convincingly petrified). The film is not perfect, but effective and has quite a few jump scenes as well as genuine scares...wel worth a watch.

As the story goes, the Finnish quartet of "stunt comics" known as the Dudesons (who now enjoy their own American TV series) were abusing themselves on camera long before Johnny Knoxville and the Jackass crew gained popularity on MTV, and the feature-length Dudesons Movie compiles a year's worth of their most cringe-inducing misadventures in Europe and America. In terms of sheer pain, The Dudesons clearly trump the Jackass boys by a long shot: shotgun blasts are taken to the chest, pub darts are hurled into bare skin, and a complete skeleton's worth of bones are fractured over the course of the film (and one thumb is lost in the course of a berserk bear hunt). Eventually, the Dudesons decide to take their act on the road as part of the rock festival circuit, which leads to a trip to the United States where they wreak unholy hell on the apartment of Jackass alum Steve-O. As with all stunt comedy, there's little room for anything but a polarized attitude towards The Dudesons' antics--you'll either find it hilarious or horrifying, and the extras, which include an additional 20 minutes of mayhem and their guest shot on Bam Margera's Viva La Bam series, probably won't sway your opinion one way or another. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars The Dudesons are Awesome.......2007-03-30

Hilarious movie! These guys are worse than the Jackass crew. This movie tells all about the beginning of the crew and who they all are, which was good to me because I knew nothing about them. Then, they get to the stunts. Whether it's lighting each other on fire or putting their face in a pile of ants, the pranks never end. You have to cringe at a few of the scenes and yell "Are you an idiot! Don't do that!" at the TV screen. I loved it and I love The Dudesons AND their pet pig Britney. Plus, in the extras they have great sound cuts and short bios of a few bands from Finland that play during their movie. I just hope that they come out with a second movie completely filled with crazy stunts.

5 out of 5 stars Crazier than Jackass and Wildboyz combined..........2006-10-29

It's nice to see where Johnny Knoxville and the dudes from Jackass got their ideas and inspirations from. The Dudesons are the real deal and perform many crazy and bonebreaking stunts. Beyond the stunts they all have very diverse personalities and great senses of humor. If your not too squeemish I would highly recommend this dvd.

2 out of 5 stars honestly this stunt fade is starting to suck!.......2006-09-14

i really tried to like the dudesons but i just couldnt everything just looks the same anymore but the toyko shock boys will always be number 1 when it comes to stunt films!

5 out of 5 stars The Original Jackass.......2006-09-10

Now, some of the stunts you'll remember from Jackass, but these guys are the original inventors of idiotic things to do on a saturday. really funny, documentary style. great addition to the jackess/steve-o/cky collection. the ending alone is worth the costs.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-08-29
