"Once upon a time... in the city of New York." So begins this unique fantasy-crime series. Catherine (Emmy nominee Linda Hamilton, The Terminator) is an assistant DA who's attacked one night by strangers. When she wakes up, her face is covered in bandages. Someone named Vincent (Golden Globe winner Ron Perlman) has been taking care of her in his home beneath the subway. When she removes the dressing, she finds that he's a man-beast, but fear turns to trust when she becomes convinced he has her best interests at heart. As she states in the introduction, "We have a bond stronger than friendship or love." As the season unfolds, Vincent frequently comes to Catherine's assistance. As an empath, he knows instinctively when she's in trouble. When he needs help, Vincent turns to Father (Roy Dotrice), the doctor who raised him after he was abandoned at the hospital after he was born. His origins are unknown. Together, Catherine and Vincent are like the detectives of Remington Steele, except no one knows she's part of a team, since they're only able to meet in secret. Vincent's underground companions, however, get to know Catherine well. Just as Vincent comes to her aid as needed, she does the same for his community.
Although Beauty and the Beast has little in common with the Jean Cocteau film or Disney animated picture, the appeal is similar. Cynics may find these do-gooders sentimental, especially when Catherine utters lines like, "And although we cannot be together, we will never, ever be apart." But romantics made the CBS drama successful--at least until Hamilton left in the second year--and launched the Emmy-nominated Perlman into cult favorites like The City of Lost Children. Oscar winner Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London) also deserves credit for his convincing make-up effects. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description
The Beauty and the Beast TV show was a fantasy series about a man-beast (Vincent) and his love for a beautiful assistant district attorney (Catherine Chandler). Vincent lived in an underground world beneath New York City where his gruesome looks were less important to his peers than were his caring and benevolent personality. Together, Vincent and Catherine had many adventures both above and below ground level and their love for each other continued to grow.

beauty and the beast.......2007-09-04
I was very sorry when this series was taken off the air but was elated when i saw it on Amazon. Very good esp. if you like good love stories.
It's About Time.......2007-08-23
I have been collecting the few video tapes available on this series willy-nilly for some time. It's great to see them finally start releasing the series on DVD. This was quality TV!
My favorite love story becomes a lovely series.......2007-08-17
I was four years old when this show came out (I actually remember the commercials!) and I got around to renting it on Netflix because Beauty and the Beast is all all time favorite story.
Maybe it's the sappy romantic in me, but this show makes me feel like there's magic in the air. The unconvential couple (Linda Hamilton as assistant DA Catherine Chandler, and the awesome Ron Perlman as the lionesque Vincent) moves from an impenetrable castle to the upscale New York life and the secret, underground tunnels below, where Vincent and his "family" make their home.
As the story goes, this contemporary beauty and the intelligent beast fall in love but can't be together (and they really can't, what with Vincent looking the way he does). This setup is masterfully done without being over the top. They don't keep it a secret that they truly love and care for each other or complain that "our love is not meant to be." They pretty much tell that thought to go to heck and stay there.
I adore Catherine-- she's clever, alluring, and can defend herself if put in tough situations (she's a really hands on assistant DA.) She has some pretty funky fashion sense, but all is forgiven when it comes to her cracking cases and putting the bad guys away. Her friendship and deep love for Vincent is refreshing. Linda Hamilton does a stellar job in portraying Catherine. She's a very fine actress- (long live Sarah Connor!)
And Vincent... where do I begin? All I can say is I love him! He's sensitive, bright, protective, naive yet cultured, and he's not against killing anyone who would harm Catherine or his family. When you don't condone someone who does that, you know he's a winner. His innocent yet strong love for Catherine is bittersweet and totally compelling. Ron Perlman has this wonderful ability to bring a favorite character to life--Vincent's a breath of fresh air in a stuffy world of tortured, brooding, whining heroes. More heroes should be like Vincent.
Okay, so some of the quality from the film is in need of series clean up and the part about Vincent being able to sense when Catherine is in trouble is kind of cheesy, but I am totally buying the power of their relationship and the cases which make them stronger.
I don't give five stars out to anything very often, but I will gladly do so with this series.
Beauty & the Beast-Season One.......2007-08-08
this is by far the best in the genre of improbable love stories! Catherine & Vincent share a love, if only in the land of television make believe that people could spend their whole lives searching for. The story & the drama combine for a tremendous hour of escaping what has become unbearable reality!!
bring them back!.......2007-08-04
Here's what I think. Bring Ron and Linda back in a movie and rewrite the ugliness of the series ending into something that sees them stay together and raise their son. Who cares how the old one ended, it could have been a psycotic, drug-induced hallucination that we can see Vincent wake up from to find Catherine and his son safe beside him- why not???? I'll write it. I'm an award-winning, produced, published playwright- working on turning a play of mine into a film with a production company right now. I would so love to see them older, together below with father a grandfather now, dealing with the antics of their child who would be a fractious teen now. What do you think???

It's a blast.......2007-08-16
I just saw the basic version that comes from Netflix, but I understand the versions are basically the same except for some added material on the 2-disk. This is where the review action seems to be, anyway.
It's a blast! Great effects - well, I know that's expected nowadays, but even so - and I like that del Toro keeps CGI in its place, preferring "live" action when it's possible. (That was a strength of his "Pan's Labyrinth", too).
I'm not much of a comic book guy, but I recognise the sharp and sassy tone of the dialog. You have to chuckle when some absolutely appalling thing happens, Hellboy's plans going horribly awry, perhaps the end of him or indeed the world, and his comment is "Oh, crap." In fact, as the monster with so many human failings and feelings, he reminds me of Grendel as interpreted by John Gardner in his marvellous book. The difference is that Grendel can't help attacking/eating humans, while Hellboy wants to save them.
So overall, just enjoy for an undemanding and never-boring experience. Appreciate the skill with which del Toro "places" you in just the right relation to the story, the mood, and the characters, so that while you never take it seriously, you never think "oh, just too silly" as one may do with inferior fantasy.
Give Evil Hell..........2007-07-06
In the world of comic books there are many well known heroes that populate the various universes of each publishing company's books. From DC Comics' popular characters of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman to Marvel's Spiderman, X-Men, and Fantastic Four; each of those characters are beloved by comic book fans worldwide. Aside from those characters and their respective companies there are numerous other characters that have built a cult following in the comic world, but are not as well known by the mainstream public. One such character would be the Dark Horse comic book Hellboy, created by writer/artist Mike Mignola.
In theaters many of Marvel and DC's heroes have been finding their way to the big screen with varying degrees of success, most are wildly successful, but a few have faltered along the way, but not too many of the other companies have managed to bring their properties to life with as much success. Sure, there was "Spawn" (property of Image Comics) and "Judge Dredd" (British publication called '2000 A.D.') in the mid-nineties, but they weren't all that successful, so the likelihood of these little known characters finding success with movie audiences was slim to none. At least that was the case until director Guillermo del Toro ("Blade 2") passed on an opportunity to direct the 3rd installment in the 'Harry Potter' franchise, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", to bring one of his favorite comic characters to life.
With a successful director, such as Guillermo behind the lens, New Line Cinema must have felt fairly confident in the film's success after he had done wonders for them with the second installment in the 'Blade' trilogy, so with a director on board who respected the source material, and a talented cast of actors consisting of Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, and John Hurt, this little known comic book was about to become a living, breathing reality on the silver screen.
"Hellboy" begins in 1944 during World War 2, when Rasputin, a mad sorcerer in league with Hitler, opens a dimensional portal to Hell, and through this dimension a baby demon emerges. Before Rasputin can take the baby demon and raise him to be an instrument of death and destruction, the Allied forces stop him. Among the Allies, is a young man who raises this demon, appropriately named Hellboy, teaching him the ways of the hero. As an adult, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) works with an agency known as the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, founded by the very man that raised him Professor Bloom (John Hurt), their job is to track any paranormal activity on Earth, and protect humanity from any danger that may be the result of that activity. Now, 60 years after releasing Hellboy on Earth, Rasputin has returned with the intention of using Hellboy to unleash the 7 gods of chaos upon Earth. With Earth's survival hanging in the balance, Hellboy and company, consisting of the firestarter Liz (Selma Blair), a human/amphibian hybrid named Abe Sapien (acted out by Doug Jones, but voiced by David Hyde Pierce), and FBI agent Myers, are in for the most difficult fight of their lives.
After finding moderate success in Hollywood with the science-fiction/horror movie "Mimic", and following that up with his much more successful comic book hit "Blade 2", director Guillermo del Toro probably seemed without a doubt the best choice to bring Hellboy to the big screen. Not only is Guillermo a gifted director in the arena of special effects and horror, but he also has a knack for making his characters have a sense of humor which serves to lighten the mood in his otherwise darker toned movies, those elements combined together with his affection for the source material created the optimal conditions for another comic book movie franchise to be born, proving him the right man for the job.
After Guillermo signed on, it was time to build the cast for the project. Now, I'm sure casting for this movie was probably typical by most comic book movie standards, but the difficult part had to have been finding the right man to don the red paint and prosthetics that are used to create Hellboy's demonic visage. Enter actor Ron Perlman ("Alien: Resurrection"), an actor that has made a career of playing somewhat strange, even scary characters, and who by the way is no stranger to wearing plenty of prosthetics. After all, Ron Perlman's best known role was that of the Beast in the live-action TV series "Beauty and the Beast" opposite actress Linda Hamilton ("The Terminator"), so with his experience with prosthetics and his penchant for strange characters, it was almost as if he was destined to be this character. The supporting cast members do very well with providing depth and reality to these strange new heroes that join together to face monsters determined to destroy us. There really wasn't a weak actor/actress in the entire bunch, a true rariety in the various genres that this movie fits into, i.e. horror, science-fiction, comic book. It was a welcome addition that everyone involved on screen and off appeared to have a deep respect for the source material and the fan base, and not just being there to collect a paycheck.
The special effects for the movie were very well done, especially the scenes with Liz's fire power being showcased. These scenes are where the CGI really shines. As I touched on earlier, the prosthetics and costume department also deserves great praise for their oustanding work done here, from Hellboy to the monsters that he faces, to Abe Sapien or Kronen, every aspect of costumes, prosthetics, and practical effects is top-notch all the way. And finally, the story for "Hellboy" was very fast paced and entertaining, without skimming on the details of the character, which I appreciated greatly due to my lack of awareness in regards to this comic book. Without this entertaining and engaging story that was smartly written to play well with audiences that would be hard-core fans of the comic and those that have either little or no knowledge of the character whatsoever.
With all of that being said, "Hellboy" is a terrific comic book based movie, that as far as I know, stays true to the source material without making newcomers to the character feel lost in the shuffle. Definitely a solid entry into the pantheon of comic book movies and a welcome addition at that.
"Hellboy" is rated PG-13 for violence and language.
Give Evil Hell.......2007-06-05
First off let me say,I've never read a comic book in my life.I never found you had to read the comics to understand or love the films. And Hellboy was no expection.I never even heard of the comic book created by Mike Mignola (I'm sure some people hadn't heard of it too).
Ron Perlman was born to play Hellboy,he was so perfectly cast has the half-human,half-demon..You just can't see anyone else play this character.John Hurt was good as Professor Broom, the man who raised Hellboy and I didn't reconize him at all,I knew lthe voice but couldn't place the face.Selma Blair who's an actress who sometimes really annoys me,but this time she didn't.
Directed by Guillermo del Toro, whom turned down the chance to direct Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to do this, did a great job and not really changing the story like most directors do with Comic Book films. If someone else directed Hellboy it wouldn't have been as great as it was
Better than the original - Del Toro is magnificent.......2007-05-12
I love this movie and normally I am not crazy about the comic book genre. The characters are so rich and the story is fantastic. The extras in this edition are well worth it.
Raving for Hellboy.......2007-03-27
I actually own the Special Edition DVD version of this movie, but I love this one all the same. You can't help but feeling sorry for Hellboy, the title character of the movie.Smitten with Elizabeth Sherman(who he calls "Liz" since they grew up together from childhood), he struggles to proclaim his love to her while watching her smile sometimes at Hellboy's new liaison,John Myers, who tries to make friends with her. This movie is an amazing action/adventure film, but with a classic twist.Included as a prelude to the movie at the beggining,a short historical part is included that explaines how Hellboy was discovered by Professor Trevor Broom & the World War II type picture they take to document the occasion. In all, this is a great movie for those who love a good action/adventure movie, but with a little real content within.

review on the beast.......2007-09-16
The movie arrived in good condition but the movie itself was a big blowoff for me. It is a little corny unless you like that kind of stuff.
Extremely Bizarre Cult Film.......2007-07-23
Walerian Borowczyk's explicit and insane la Bête (The Beast) is a directly adult reflection of the sexual undertones in many fairy tales. There are segments in la Bête that are unflinching enough to be deemed pornographic but they are done in such a silly and shocking way we cannot assume that Borowcyzk's goals are to titillate. I mean come on, the film opens with a close-up of a female horse's private parts and a male horse jumps right into the mix soon thereafter. There is also a tremendous amount of (human) nudity in la Bête and while gratuitous, it does seem to be appropriate within the film, even though it isn't necessarily erotic. I don't think it is possible to categorize this movie and that in and of itself is a strength for me. From beginning to end, I had no idea what to expect.
The film takes place in the Esperance house that is awaiting a wedding between the family's son and Lucy. The family is full of chaos and everyone seems to have something to hide. Lucy becomes fascinated with the family's notorious ancestor Romilda, who apparently had a sexual encounter that Lucy reads about with a very well endowed beast in the woods nearby. Lucy imagines the experience Romilda went through graphically, and she almost seems to fantasize about the ordeal. We see the sequence almost in its entirety. It consists of Romilda (Sirpa Lane) running around gradually losing her clothes with some harpsichord music playing and eventually she succumbs to the beast's advances and gets it on with his giant prosthetic phallus. It is graphic enough that it would be nearly impossible to say it isn't shocking, but it is funny enough that the audience will laugh uncomfortably until it concludes. You certainly won't forget this sequence and there are several more memorable parts before and after.
Just because someone may care I won't reveal how la Bête ends. Walerian Borowcyzk actually does seem to have a way with making movies. His other films are for the most part straight-forward erotica but he has the ability to make beautiful shots and here he even puts together an interesting, albeit strictly comedic, commentary on human and animal sexual impulse. I don't want to mislead anyone here; the priorities of this movie are by no means it's potentially significant insights. I don't know what Borowcyzk's intentions are but la Bête is certainly one of a kind.
The Cult Epics three disc release is worth owning if you enjoy rare and unique films. Especially ones that push the limit like this one. We have the dubbed version and the director's cut in here, as well as a great stills gallery and a hilarious trailer that shows almost the entire sequence with the beast and Sirpa Lane, but with a black bar over the graphic footage...as if we don't know what could be happening. On the third disc we have over one hundred minutes of silent behind the scenes footage and several other interesting features. The book that comes with this edition is probably the best aspect of the Cult Epics release. It has stills of some of the more noteworthy content and explains the film in far better detail than I have. This is recommended for collectors and definitely for those of us not easily offended.
Art? Sure, why not. Deep? Hell no........2006-09-19
I thought this movie was hysterical. I was prompted to rent it after reading so many reviews that raved about its high-brow eroticism. I thought, "Wow! A serious artsie movie about beastiality? That's more pretentious than Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii"
After viewing it with an open-mind, some popcorn, and a very good-sport of a guest, I have decided that it's well worth the purchase! The first 3/4 of the movie are fairly generic w/o much in the way of plot developement or rich cinematography. It rambles on rather slowly with the occasional clumsily erotic moment. The last quarter of the movie, however, turns into a whole 'nother bag of ish.
To me, it seems like the director decided to really take a different direction with this portion of the movie, and make something that would certainly generate some controversy. He goes so far as to (beware of content proceeding) construct a huge gorilla phallus that spews out semen, upon which the star of the movie rubs her face in. Totally rediculous!
I was all at once shocked and laughing hysterically because it comes out of the blue. The scene goes on for ages. It looks like an old moster movie from the 1960s, with a guy in a silly gorilla suit and the star chasing each other around and having sex. It cracked me up, scared me a little, and ultimately left me feeling like the subject of a practical joke.
Believe me when I say people are looking into this movie a bit too much. Its great, but not because it is an artistic masterpiece. Its great to keep in the closet, and pop on once in a while to get unwanted company out of your house. Its great to project on the sides of suburban houses at night. Its great as a gift for a nun. Its great to write reviews about and pretend thats its a high-end art film in hopes that people will watch it. Worth seeing, but I think a lot of folks are looking way too deeply into its contents.
FAILED ATTEMPT AT A GOOD MOVIE........2006-08-03
I bought this movie because I love to see an old tale tespun and retold. If it is done well there is nothing better to read or watch. This movie is not a retelling of "Beauty and the Beast" as its title and premise would indicate. I own several versions of "Beauty and the Beast" on DVD and in print. And after reading the reviews here I was really looking forward to adding this movie to my collection and I was excited to have the chance to watch this movie. I thought it was going to be great! BUT IT IS THE WORST MOVIE I HAVE EVER PURCHASED. I was prepared for the horses and I was prepared for the nudity and the eroticism. I was not prepared for the filmmaker's mangling of "Beauty and the Beast". That is what the blurb on the box suggests. But instead of getting the Beauty and the Beast message of the redeeming power of love, you get a half-hearted sermon against bestiality. I didn't know that was such a problem in this world. I mean I have never had the urge and I don't know of anyone who has. There have been no reports on the news about people sexually assaulting livestock that I have heard. I am sure I would have heard something if such was the case. There is no excuse for what Borowczyk has done here. The movie starts out slow, I can forgive that, I have an attention span (too many people don't.) The story starts to pick up momentum and promise when the beast appears. Then the story heads for the cliff and unhesitatingly dives off! I saw the kernel of a good movie here. WHAT HAPPENED? Do yourself a favor. Skip this one.
Very Erotic.......2006-06-15
NUDITY!!!We get three different nude french chicks. All show bush. The film wasn't full of sex but it had this underlying erotic feel that just makes you horny. So when you did get to see some hot nude chick you were ready to go. The beast thing was strange but very erotic the way he kept getting harder and harder and the girl kept accidently getting him of as he spued gallons of semen everywhere. Nice full frontal and I found it very erotic.
CAREFUL at the begining is some real horse sex. Gaint horse penis and throbbing femal horse vigina, I couldn't even watch it, very nasty, be ready to fast forward. What was the director thinking?

This straight-to-video animated story is set in the Beast's castle which, as viewers know from the original Beauty and the Beast film, is under a spell until the Beast can learn to love. Starting with this familiar premise, Belle's Magical World plummets into three disjointed episodes surrounding Belle's life as a captive in the castle. In "The Perfect World," a misunderstanding of words erupts between Belle and Beast, made worse by a feigned apology. Fifi and Lumiere take the spotlight in "Fifi's Folly," when a romantic evening together becomes a chilling adventure inside a runaway sleigh. In "The Broken Wing," Belle entreats the Beast to act kindly toward a tiny songbird. Each tale offers a diluted moral message, yet the entire effort feels contrived and confusing, a ploy by the folks at Disney to add cash to their coffers by exploiting the popularity of the original motion picture classic. (Ages 5 and older) --Lynn Gibson
Customer Reviews:
horrible.......2007-07-31
Not what I expected at all a waste of money belle wears same dress in all episodes it is a total waste of money.
Great kids movie.......2007-06-27
I bought this movie for my two girls ages 2 and 5. They LOVE it. They are very into the princesses and have seen every princess movie TONS of times. This movie is composed of a couple of short stories based on the original. Characters are true w/ their true voices. Very cute and enjoyable.
WARNING.......2007-03-14
The title of this DVD made me think it was the original movie. IT IS NOT.
I was cheated too..........2007-01-10
Actually I thought was the original motion picture, instead is a serial of short TV style cartoons... my daughter is enjoying them anyway though. I am simply asking why they discontinue the production of the original movie...
Cheesy.......2006-11-12
Wow, this was such a disappointment. For this to be a spinoff of an award-winning movie is just sad. The plot was unimaginative and trite, and the animation was comparable to an "okay" TV cartoon series. We wasted a free rental coupon from Blockbuster on this, and we felt very "ripped off." So definitely don't waste your time buying it.
