From its charming and angst-ridden first season to the darker, apocalyptic final one, Buffy the Vampire Slayer succeeds on many levels, and in a fresher and more authentic way than the shows that came before or after it. How lucky, then, that with the release of its boxed set of seasons 1-7, you can have the estimable pleasure of watching a near-decade of Buffy in any order you choose. (And we have some ideas about how that should be done.)

First: rest assured that there's no shame in coming to Buffy late, even if you initially turned your nose up at the winsome Sarah Michelle Gellar kicking the hell out of vampires (in Buffy-lingo, vamps), demons, and other evil-doers. Perhaps you did so because, well, it looked sort of science-fiction-like with all that monster latex. Start with season 3 and see that Buffy offers something for everyone, and the sooner you succumb to it, the quicker you'll appreciate how textured and riveting a drama it is.

Why season 3? Because it offers you a winning cast of characters who have fallen from innocence: their hearts have been broken, their egos trampled in typically vicious high-school style, and as a result, they've begun to realize how fallible they are. As much as they try, there are always more monsters, or a bigger evil. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the core crew remains something of a unit--there's the smart girl, Willow (Alyson Hannigan) who dreams of saving the day by downloading the plans to City Hall's sewer tunnels and mapping a route to safety. There are the ne'r do wells--the vampire Spike (James Marsters), who both clashes with and aspires to love Buffy; the tortured and torturing Angel (David Boreanz); the pretty, popular girl with an empty heart (Charisma Carpenter); and the teenage everyman, Xander (Nicholas Brendon).

Then there's Buffy herself, who in the course of seven seasons morphs from a sarcastic teenager in a minidress to a heroine whose tragic flaw is an abiding desire to be a "normal" girl. On a lesser note, with the boxed set you can watch the fashion transformation of Buffy from mall rat to Prada-wearing, kickboxing diva with enviable highlights. (There was the unfortunate bob of season 2, but it's a forgivable lapse.) At least the storyline merits the transformations: every time Buffy has to end a relationship she cuts her hair, shedding both the pain and her vulnerability.

In addition to the well-wrought teenage emotional landscape, Buffy deftly takes on more universal themes--power, politics, death, morality--as the series matures in seasons 4-6. And apart from a few missteps that haven't aged particularly well ("I Robot" in season 1 comes to mind), most episodes feel as harrowing and as richly drawn as they did at first viewing. That's about as much as you can ask for any form of entertainment: that it offer an escape from the viewer's workaday world and entry into one in which the heroine (ideally one with leather pants) overcomes demons far more troubling than one's own. --Megan Halverson

5 out of 5 stars 3 thumbs up.......2007-09-15

This is simply a deal not to be refused. A great quality show, packaged well enough for royalty at a reasonable price. In fact cheaper than if bought in the UK and that includes P+P!

5 out of 5 stars So frickin' sweet!.......2007-09-12

This is one of the sweetest collections thus far! It has ALL seven seasons of Buffy (although I like to pretend season four doesn't exist)!!! This is the ultimate collection for any Buffy/ Angel/ Joss Whedon fan!!!

5 out of 5 stars Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Collector's Set ( 40 discs ).......2007-09-06

This collection is one of the best I have ever come across. The episodes are all written brilliantly and its hard not to cry or laugh while watching. The characters are easy to relate to, and some of the issue the series cover are very important to this day. Also, people can learn many valuable lessons from Buffy, one of them is: Don't go to a frat party and take a drink thats already been made. I would recommend this series to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Best TV Ever.......2007-08-26

I can't think of any show that is more relevant to more people than this show. Great for teens, adults, boys, girls, all cultures, sexual orientations, etc. Watching it all at once, one season after another, really makes its awsomeness all that more apparent. Genius writing and stellar cast. You can't go wrong. I just can't wait for Angel to come out and book off 4 weeks to watch all 5 seasons of that show - Oct 30th.

5 out of 5 stars Get Past Season 1.......2007-08-25

First season, you'll be horrified that you spent this much. Gratefully, it's a short season and you will very much enjoy seasons 2-7. Those are ground-breaking TV and, in turn and sometimes at the same time, action-packed, funny, and very human, despite the fantastic setting. I own very few DVD's, but all 7 seasons of Buffy are among them.

If you have a daughter (and perhaps also a son--this is the female heroine he'll accept, if any--OK, maybe Zena for other reasons :)), series provides excellent role models for who we'd like our kids to be, although if they are young the monsters may be too scary. Too, I can't remember when the series became somewhat and, ultimately, sexually graphic, so--for both reasons--you'll want to watch it in advance of your kids. Which you won't be able to resist in any case, whether or not you decide it's OK for them!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Set, No Problems Viewing.......2007-08-03

I purchased this set when it first came out, about two years ago. I put it away for several months, as it was to be a Christmas present. Then I began reading all the negative reviews about these disks freezing up. As a result, I didn't bother opening the set and figured it was money down the drain.

Several months ago I decided to check these disks to see if at least some of the disks would play. Lo and behold, every one of the eight films played fine and looked gorgeous to boot. I cannot believe that my set was the only one produced without flaws. I agree with another reviewer that people who have problems with these disks may be trying to play them on a cheap DVD player. If you bought your player for $30 or $60, for god's sake break down and buy a decent one.

It's true that this set contains no extras, only the 8 movies. It's also true that the disks are double-sided, which means you have to be extra careful not to damage them. But the films look better than they ever have, and they are all terrific movies (including Paranoiac and Nightmare). How on earth anyone can complain about getting 8 fine films in gorgeous transfers for so little money is beyond me.

My purpose in writing this review is to put out the word to folks who might want to buy this set but are afraid to: As long as you have a decent player, these movies play fine. Ignore the naysayers, buy the set, and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-07-03

This collection contains eight movies that propose a different kind of suspense and horror. The most of them are filmed in color, but there are two (Paranoia and Nightmare) that were done in black and white. Although the temes are classic of the horror movies( vampires, werewolfs, etc), the style of the cinematography is different.

If you like the good horror films, this is an excellent choice.

1 out of 5 stars Should have read the other reviews before purchasing............2007-06-06

I was so excited when my Hammer Horror Series DVDs came in the mail yesterday. But when I started watching it last night, during Curse of the Werewolf, it completely froze up. I should have read the other reviews of this before purchasing. I didn't even bother to watch any of the other films because I finally read all the negative reviews and am just going to send it back. I truly hope Universal has changed from DVD-18 to DVD-9, because I was really anticipating watching these!

I hope the problem has been fixed by this time.

4 out of 5 stars Night Creatures.......2007-05-13

Remembered from my youth, really enjoyed catching up with it again. I could not get my player to play without the subtitles but it didn't spoil it.

2 out of 5 stars hammerseries.......2007-04-11

save your cash.this is a letdown collection.don't misunderstand:that's not to say that hammer studios failed to live up to their usual great standards concerning the horror movie genre;it's the powers-that- be that determine which movies go into a particular collection.no studio makes great movies with every attempt;hammer's no exception to this rule.there's really only one good movie in this collection(evil of frankenstein):brides of dracula is also passable.everything else...junk.

The seventh and final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer begins with a mystery: someone is murdering teenage girls all over the world and something is trying hard to drive Spike mad. Buffy is considerably more cheerful in these episodes than we have seen her during the previous year as she trains Dawn and gets a job as student counselor at the newly rebuilt Sunnydale High. Willow is recovering from the magical addiction which almost led her to destroy the world, but all is not yet well with her, or with Anya, who has returned to being a Vengeance demon in "Same Time, Same Place" and "Selfless," and both women are haunted by their decisions.

Haunting of a different kind comes in the excellent "Conversations with Dead People" (one of the show's most terrifying episodes ever), in which a mysterious song is making Spike kill again in spite of his soul and his chip. Giles turns up in "Bring on the Night" and Buffy has to fight one of the deadliest vampires of her career in "Showtime". In "Potential" Dawn faces a fundamental reassessment of her purpose in life.

Buffy was always a show about female empowerment, but it was also a show about how ordinary people can decide to make a difference alongside people who are special. And it was also a show about people making up for past errors and crimes. So, for example, we have the excellent episodes "Storyteller", in which the former geek/supervillain Andrew sorts out his redemption while making a video diary about life with Buffy; and "Lies My Parents Told Me," in which we find out why a particular folk song sends Spike crazy. Redemption abounds as Faith returns to Sunnydale and the friends she once betrayed, and Willow finds herself turning into the man she flayed. Above all, this was always Buffy's show: Sarah Michelle Gellar does extraordinary work here both as Buffy and as her ultimate shadow, the First Evil, who takes her face to mock her. This is a fine ending to one of television's most remarkable shows. --Roz Kaveney

Buffy was so bad it was cancelled twice. A fact. Dont waste your money on Buffy. 2 networks did and cancelled it for there trouble. Dont be like them. Avoid Buffy

5 out of 5 stars One of the best seasons of BTVS.......2007-02-24

Season 7 is one of my favorites. The episodes were very scary and all the characters became heroes @ the end. I don't know y people say this season is bad. Many of the episodes I enjoyed very much and the ending was bittersweet. I wish Buffy stayed on longer. This show has been amazing. The show has made me angry, bored, cried, happy, and of course made me laugh soo much from Xander's jokes. The show had everything and it deserved 3 more seasons. I especially love love Andrew played by Tom Lenk. Omg he is sooo cute and brings even more fun to the gang. I am soo happy he is going to be in season 8 comics. I wish the writers made him a full fledge cast from the beginning. This season I also loved all the characters even Dawn. They all evolved sooo well. Season 2, 3, 7, 6 (I luv spuffy), 1, 5, 4. That's my order from best to worst.

    5 out of 5 stars well done........2007-01-04

The sixth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed the logic of plot and character development into some gloomy places. The year begins with Buffy being raised from the dead by the friends who miss her, but who fail to understand that a sacrifice taken back is a sacrifice negated. Dragged out of what she believes to have been heavenly bliss, she finds herself "going through the motions" and entering into a relationship with the evil, besotted vampire Spike just to force her emotions. Willow becomes ever more caught up in the temptations of magic; Xander and Anya move towards marriage without ever discussing their reservations; Giles feels he is standing in the way of Buffy's adult independence; Dawn feels neglected. What none of them need is a menace that is, at this point, simply annoying--three high school contemporaries who have turned their hand to magical and high-tech villainy. Added to this is a hungry ghost, an invisibility ray, an amnesia spell and a song-and-dance demon (who acts as rationale for the incomparable musical episode "Once More, with Feeling").

This is a year in which chickens come home to roost: everything from the villainy of the three geeks to Xander's doubts about marriage come to a head, often--as in the case of the impressive wedding episode--through wildly dark humor. The estrangement of the characters from each other--a well-observed portrait of what happens to college pals in their early 20s--comes to a shocking head with the death of a major character and that death's apocalyptic consequences. The series ends on a consoling note which it has, by that point and in spite of imperfections, entirely earned. --Roz Kaveney

    Description

Elated with having Buffy back from the dead, her friends never wonder if she may have been in a better place. Only Spike knows the truth and as Buffy struggles to readjust to life, she begins a relationship with Spike that torments her as much as it brings her fleeting comfort. Yet even as Buffy fears that the magic that brought her back has somehow changed her, Willow's growing reliance on magic is an addiction she can barely control - and one that threatens everyone.

I still miss this show. Okay, earlier seasons were more fun, but that's life. The characters were younger and just figuring life out. Now they're adults. Okay, they're adults living on the hellmouth but still... I wasn't a big fan of the final espisode but considering that SMG wanted to pursue other projects, the network change, the adult figures in Buffy's life weren't around anymore, the Scooby Gang are now adults and they're still fighting demons on top of that?! Give the writers, cast and crew a break. All shows get stale with time but "Buffy" was still entertaining. Dark? Yes. Sad? Yes. Stil wickedly funny? Yes. It was a good end to a great series. BRAVO. BRAVA.

Who else cried when they ended the series? My daughter and I both did. We watch Buffy a LOT around here. Every so often myself or my daughter will cry out "time to Buffinate the day!" and we will pop in a disk and watch as many episodes as we can get away with. Great for sick days or just lazy, rainy days.

Show gets better with repeat viewings and HEY James Marsters as SPIKE is just as hot as the equator in the middle of a record breaking summer while a volcano erupts! Yummy eye candy treat!

Season 6 is not my favorite BUT so much happens that sets up Season 7. Still one of my all-time favorite shows.

    5 out of 5 stars I love Willow!!.......2007-02-27

@ first I was scared to see Dark Willow and was sad to hear that she turns bad. But there is a reason why and the writing was great. Willow was the big bad but isnt that Buffy's most difficult task? I thought so trying to beat her own friend!!

The fifth season of Joss Whedon's hit series started out in excellent form as slayer extraordinaire Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) did battle with the most famous of vampires (that Dracula guy) and then went on to spar with another nemesis, little sister Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg). Wait--Buffy has a teenage sister? Where has she been the past four years? And why is everyone acting like she's always been around? Turns out that young Dawn is actually "The Key," a form of pure energy that, true to its name, helps open the gates between different dimensions. To protect said key from falling into the wrong hands, a group of monks gave it human form and sent it to the fiercely protective Buffy for safekeeping, creating new memories of Dawn for everyone as if she'd existed... well, always. Why all the super secrecy? There's this very, very, very bad girl named Glory (Clare Kramer) who wants the key very badly, and will do anything to get it. Oh, and by the way, Glory isn't just a run-of-the-mill demon... she's way worse.

Some fans will tell you that Buffy "jumped the shark" with the introduction of Dawn, when in actuality this season was the pinnacle of the show's achievement, as there was superb comedy to be had ("Buffy Vs. Dracula," the double-Xander episode "The Replacement," the introduction of the "Buffybot" in "Intervention") as well as some of television's best drama. The Whedon-scripted and -directed "The Body" remains one of Buffy's best episodes, when the young woman who faces down supernatural death on a daily basis finds herself powerless in the wake of her mother's sudden passing. The first third or so of the season was a bit choppy, but once the evil Glory came into her own, Buffy was a television force to be reckoned with. Kramer was the show's best villain (after the evil Angel, natch), and the supporting cast was never better. But as always, it was the superb Gellar who was the powerful center of the show, sparking opposite lovelorn vampire Spike (James Marsters) and wrestling with moral dilemmas rarely seen on television. With this season, Buffy Summers became, like Tony Soprano, one of television's true greats. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars The Slim Set is much cheaper.......2007-09-10

Anyone thinking of ordering this should consider Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete Fifth Season (Slim Set) instead. The discs are exactly the same and the only difference is that the DVD packaging is a Slim Set. Slim Sets are thin cases (about half the width of a regular DVD) that don't contain the booklets you usually get with DVDs. Those bargain DVDs you see for $5 at the store are usually sold in slim sets. Otherwise, you are paying way too much for this product.

If you're trying to get the entire series of Buffy, go with Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Collector's Set (40 discs)

    5 out of 5 stars Love Buffy!.......2007-03-12

I own seasons 1-7 and they're all great. Don't remember what happens in Season 5, but they're all awesome. Watch them in order; you'll get hooked!

    5 out of 5 stars Good season.......2007-02-27

Ok I reallly liked Glory and the ending was sooooo good. Yes, Dawn was very annoyin but I like her character later on as she grows up and understands the whole buffy life. I thought glory was good because she was pretty strong and buffy had a hard time killing her. Spike starts changing too. And i Love Spike!! He needs a spin-off show. What it is taking soooo long, Joss?

3 out of 5 stars There are better seasons.......2007-01-17

I've watched much of this season and I can't wait for it it to end. The new villain is annoying and played by a bad actress. There is the new sister character who has an annoying Jar-jar Binks role. Alyson Hannigan's hair continues to get shorter and uglier. Willow's girlfriend is a boring and useless character. And Spike getting all these romantic intentions towards... well, I don't want to ruin it, so I won't say who, I'll just say, it's completely unrealistic and comes up out of nowhere and makes no sense. Buffy continues to be a depressing character, always brooding and angsting.

I don't think it's all that bad... I just think it could have been so much better.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-01-11

OK, I am sure that I am joining the chorus of Buffy fanatics here, but this season rocks. The best part is Spike's growing "love/madness" for Buffy. The episode where Spike faskes a date with Buffy is one of my all-time favorite Joss Whedon episodes--including Firefly. "It's not blood, it's bourbon." LOL!

To break from the chorus, I do not believe that this was the last great season of Buffy. I loved season 6 and ... the second half of season 7.

    Enjoy!

Universal ruled the monster movie in the 1930s, but this hugely enjoyable DVD set offers a counter-argument from MGM and Warners. Its half-dozen horror titles run the gamut from classic vampirism to baroque romanticism, and gather horror luminaries such as Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and Peter Lorre.

The greatest film of the bunch is Mad Love (1935), a rich and oft-imitated bit of perversity with a deeply romantic streak. Concert pianist Colin Clive (from Frankenstein) has his hands wrecked, and his actress wife (Frances Drake) turns to the obsessive Dr. Gogol (Lorre), who has long worshipped her. But the doctor replaces the pianist's hands with those of a murderous circus knife-thrower! Superbly directed by Karl Freund (The Mummy), this eerie film is shaped by Lorre's subtle, uncannily sympathetic performance.

Karloff reigns in The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932), which offers more minute-for-minute lurid action than any other movie in this set. Connoisseurs of horror will be well pleased by the roster: a crocodile pit, deadly snakes and spiders, poisons, various forms of torture including a man strapped beneath a giant reverberating bell, and Fu Manchu's sexy daughter (Myrna Loy). MGM designer Cedric Gibbons runs wild with a wonderfully daffy Deco-meets-Orientalism scheme. There are some undeniably racist epithets thrown in the direction of the evil Dr. Fu Manchu, but he gives as good as he gets, and the character is ultimately as irresistible as any evil mastermind. Karloff gives one of his juiciest performances ever.

Doctor X (1932) is presented in a recently-restored 2-strip Technicolor process (a lot of throbbing greens and oranges), which gives the movie an antique appeal. Doctor Xavier (Lionel Atwill) brings his colleagues together to figure out which of them might be the Full Moon Killer; daughter Fay Wray and reporter Lee Tracy (a typical fast-talking role for this fun actor) tag along. Michael Curtiz directed; he also did the similar Mystery of the Wax Museum, again with Atwill (available on the House of Wax disc). The Return of Doctor X (1939) is more of a curio than a full-fledged horror movie, as it has Humphrey Bogart, resplendent in a Bride of Frankenstein hair streak, in a rare supernatural outing.

The other two films are directed by Tod Browning. Mark of the Vampire (1935) is a clear example of MGM trying to ride the Dracula gravy train, with plenty of smoky graveyards, scuttling possums, and Lugosi in a tuxedo striding through giant spider webs. Lugosi is peripheral here, as Lionel Barrymore hunts down the blood-suckers. It's slow going, but the touches are wonderful and there's a spooky vampiress. Browning makes The Devil-Doll (1936) a memorably oddball thriller, with Barrymore a wronged man seeking revenge--and exploiting a device that allows people to be miniaturized. All the films have lively commentary tracks, except Devil-Doll. Overall this is a very neat package; even the inclusion of Return of Doctor X makes sense as a pairing with its original. MGM and Warners seemed embarrassed by the horror genre in the thirties, but these examples prove they could rise to Universal's game. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars A couple of gems, a couple of rarities and 2 duds.......2007-08-22

This collection from the vaults of Warner Brothers and MGM, studios more famous for other film genres, contains some great stuff but it could have been better with a few changes.

First, the good - the prints are generally excellent, the theatrical trailers are included and the commentary for "Fu Manchu" is outstanding, with "Mad Love" and "Doctor X" close behind. "Mad Love" benefits from stunning camera work, not surprising when the director is the famous cameraman Karl Freund.

Second, the mediocre - the print of "Doctor X", an early example of 2 strip technicolour, is probably as good as it gets but that still does not make it clearly visible. "The Return of Doctor X" is a B film and the plot is dumb in a typical B way. It does not really justify a commentary except that the director was still alive so we get a few first hand comments from the geriatric Vincent Sherman.

Third, the bad - "The Mark of the Vampire" was butchered before release and the film is arrant nonsense, a remake of a lost Lon Chaney film. The theatrical trailer promises much more than the film delivers. The commentary attached to the film is appalling so at least the commentators have matched the film.

As for the films themselves, "Mad Love", "Devil Dolls" and "Doctor X" are ripping yarns with excellent casts and good scripts. "Fu Manchu" is an outrageous pre-code gem and best, of all, the DVD has been cut from the original print with all the censored bits restored.

The Set is good value but I would have flicked "Mark of the Vampire" and included Michael Curtiz's "The Walking Dead", a far superior film. Also, a good commentary about "Devil Dolls" would have rounded out the set nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Pre-Hays Code Wildness, Camp and Hilarity!.......2007-06-27

These films are such gems, each of them, and the restored prints are so beautiful, that this collection should not be missed whether you are a seasoned archivist or just discovering the Universal Horror Canon. The bonus features are sparse, comprising mostly commentary tracks from film historians and critics (although one,The Return of Dr. X, which stars a very creepy Humphrey Bogart, has commentary that includes the 100-year-old director!) and sometimes the theatrical trailer. But The Mask of Fu Manchu alone is worth thet price of the set for the chance to see, uncut, its pre-code craziness, high camp and very overt erotic and sadomasochistic overtones!
Barrymore, Atwill, Karloff, Lugosi, Lorre, Myrna Loy, Fay Wray... the list goes on. Whatever they're asking for this delightful box set, it's a pittance. It doesn't get much better than this. The Boris Karloff Collection (Tower of London / The Black Castle / The Climax / The Strange Door / Night Key)The Bela Lugosi Collection (Murders in the Rue Morgue / The Black Cat / The Raven / The Invisible Ray / Black Friday)

5 out of 5 stars Good collection of horror films at a great price.......2007-06-13

Rather than just focusing on a few horror franchises and milking them for all they were worth with five or six B quality sequels apiece as Universal did with Frankenstein, Dracula, the Mummy, and the Invisible Man, in the 30's and 40's Warner and MGM would usually take just one good idea and make just one good horror movie. This is a collection of six of Warner and MGM's better excursions into the horror genre during that era.

Everyone else has gone into the plots of these movies in detail, so I will not do the same. Let me point out, though, that "Return of Doctor X" is not really a sequel to "Doctor X" at all. The two stand alone. The only thing they have in common is the theme of a wise-cracking reporter on the trail of what turns out to be a mad doctor. As far as transfer quality, "Mad Love" has noticeable artifacts in the video, at least through the first half of the movie. It's nothing too distracting, though. With "Doctor X" you have to get used to the peculiarities of two-strip technicolor which includes occasional green skies and also green skin tones when people are shown in the dark. The rest of the films look quite good, and the audio quality is very good on all of the films. The extras that come with the films are as follows:

Special Features for Mark of the Vampire:
Commentary by genre historians Kim Newman and Steve Jones
    Theatrical trailer

Special Features for The Mask of Fu Manchu:

    Theatrical trailer

Although not really a complaint, the packaging of this set somewhat surprised me. In particular, each DVD comes in a slim case rather than the thicker and sturdier keep case in which most of the DVDs in Warner DVD sets are packaged. At any rate, the set is a great deal for the money and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars My kind of Entertainment..........2007-02-05

I won't go into the plots of all of these fine films, but will say that I bought it because of "Devil Doll". Those special effects are amazing. None of the films could be considered "Horror", though they all involve some terrific mystery plots. I was especially impressed with "Mad Love", and Peter Lorre was a very underrated actor. (See "The Beast with 5 Fingers" to verify this.) Early experiments with color also enhanced "Doctor X". This is, indeed, an excellent mystery collection, and any aficianado of the genre should have this in their collection.

4 out of 5 stars THE DREAM TEAM FOR NIGHTMARES.......2006-12-07

This set has nice clean video, and of course you can't lose with the actors and titles. One of the most interesting to watch is MAD LOVE which was Peter Lorre's US film debut. The devotee of the old Universal Horror movies will see certain scene similarities to The Phantom of the Opera, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Mummy, and Dracula in Mad Love, and the commentary track picks up on some (not all) of this. Interesting when you consider this is an MGM work. The only downside to this set, and it is a minor point, is the commentary track for Mark of the Vampire, where two obnoxious brits talk over each other saying little of worth. (I've noticed that on DVD commentary tracks when you put brits together, they continually talk over eachother, and it's hard to understand what they're saying. Perhaps that's why we won the Revolutionary War).
Anyway, if you love old horror movies, if you remember Famous Monsters of Filmland, if you want to see the US film debut of the man who said "You deespize me Reek, don't you?" in Casablanca--buy this set.

      Description

It's terror times three with these bloodsucking classics from Jean Rollin, France's maestro of the macabre. Enter a world filled with gothic castles, nubile beauties in various stages of undress, and predatory vampires, with haunting music and images bound to linger in your nightmares. Bet you can't take just one bite! These adult fairy tales of the monstrous and mysterious represent three of Rollin's finest achievements. Includes his controversial first "banned" film, "Rape of the Vampire," the outrageously colorful "Shiver of the Vampires," and his biggest box office hit, "Requiem for a Vampire," also known as "Caged Virgins" and "Virgins and Vampires."

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Painting as Cinema.......2007-07-11

This collection of 3 films will be best enjoyed by those with an understanding of surrealist or symbolist painting. Otherwise if you are not familiar with the motivations behind these movements, you will find yourself bored by the lack of plot and character development, and slow pacing. Even your average 'B' movie fan will be disappointed here - despite the low budgets - there are not enough laughs here to make it a good fun night with your friends. Instead Rollin approaches these films with lofty ambitions and in the main part succeeds in creating some memorable images. The first half of Rape of the Vampire is a great and striking short film. The second half is obviously tacked on and is completely incomprehensible. Shiver of the Vampires in contrast to the black and white of ROTV has impressive use of colour and is probably the strongest of the three films. Requiem for a Vampire, is the slowest paced of the three, building up to some jaw dropping, sadistic torture scenes that evoke the legend of Countess Bathory.

If you can imagine a hammer horror with gallic/new wave/surrealist spices added in to the mix - you'll have an idea of what to expect.

      5 out of 5 stars astoundingly beautiful.......2004-09-18

Picked up this set expecting some typical vampire films and was blown away by the photography and ambiance. This set introduced me to the beauty and strangeness of Rollin's work. It was his later films that really captivated me: Fascination, Two Vampire Orphans, and Fiancee of Dracula. These are hard films to describe but there's something very beautiful about them. You'll either get it or you wont. The films in this set aren't as captivating to me as the three films I mentioned above but they have some amazing moments and I'm very pleased that I discovered this set of films since they introduced me to the work of this visionary director and led me to experience the glory of his later films.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2004-05-25

I decided to get this collection as it sounded interesting enough. I was hoping for at least something exciting.
Sadly, I found these movies boring for the most part.

The first half hour of the rape of the vampires was perhaps the best for myself/ downhill from there. Redemptions Logo at the start of the dvd's is better then the movies !@#

Anyone know of some good vampire movies !@#

5 out of 5 stars introduction to rollin: lesson 1.......2003-09-16

OH YEAH! it's great & redemption has made this collection available with an amazingly low cost. yes, that's 3 great films of rollin at a small price. for those of us who've wanted to study the maestro's classics or just indulge in some fantastic eurotrash, this is an absolute dream come true. infact, this was my introduction or 1st lesson in my education of jean rollin. of all three films, i'd have to say i love rape of the vampire best. as strange as this might sound, i was initially very confused when i saw this film & wouldn't have rated it so highly had i not given it a second viewing. having said that, i loved the images which are macabre & beautiful almost all at once. needless to say, that 2nd viewing really stole my attention & gave me a deeper appreciation of the film altogether. i was able to piece together the events & characters the 2nd time around & i realized what a genius jean rollin truly is. rape of the vmapire is to jean rollin as eraserhead is to david lynch. a rare landmark film that should be talked about for years & could be deemed an instant cult classic. the next film was equally enjoyable but not as confusing. shiver of the vampire is campy, macabre, and ironically funny. you'll find yourself shivering with delight at the hilarious but philosophical dialogue & shuddering with some of the images of erotic & vampiric activity. i could see this film would probably be more embraced by the mainstream than perhaps some of his earlier. not exceptionally graphic but there is a great deal of implied homoeroticism here. the next film was perhaps one of his most mainstream films (or should i say popular) of all time. released under various names through the years, requiem for a vampire is presented here in all of it's uncut glory. not my favorite of the three but it does have a surreal, child-like fairytale quality to it as many have mentioned. strangely enough, this film is by far the most sexually explicit or graphic film out of the three by far. the dungeon scene alone merits an NC-17 rating easily. had the film's dialogue been 30 lines shorter, this could have been a silent film. if you enjoy these films, thne you might go on to try living dead girl or night of the hunted which are also terrific films. although they are far more depressing than either requiem or shiver, they are indeed undisputed rollin classics. in fact, amazon.com has listed a a zombie collection which should have those titles included & will be released early october. this should save you some money & still provide the same entertaining quality you've come(or will come to expect) with redemption's wonderful catalog.

I just recieved this set in the mail and reviewed the quality last night and so far three of the movies are not working, they freeze every two seconds. As for the others on there I find that they work ok, so I guess I would say I'm not too disapointed, but it would be nice if brand new dvd's worked.

Although Toshihiro Hirano (Magic Knight Rayearth) directed these broadcast episodes, they lack the panache of the earlier OAVs; both were based on the manga created by his wife, Narumi Kakinouchi. This version of Miyu is less aloof; she enrolls in a Tokyo school and makes a few friends. Larva is more of a companion than a servant, and his mask conceals the face of a bishonen (beautiful boy). He and Miyu are joined by Shina, a spirit who resembles a cross between a rabbit and a Pokémon Clefairy. As the Protector, Miyu battles Shinma, evil spirits that attack humans, but the many episodes suggest she isn't particularly effective at the job she's destined to fulfill. In one episode, a Shinma uses a thug as an assassin; Miyu calmly remarks, "It's not really my concern how many people you have him kill." In "Your House," she destroys a cat-Shinma only after it's caused four deaths, and she gives several victims a fatal eternal happiness with her bite.

Two extended storylines frame the shorter stories. One pits Miyu against the snow demon-Shinma Reiha and her obnoxious talking doll Matzukaze; the second involves the evil bird-demons who are determined to destroy Miyu. Although Miyu's childhood experiences link the two plots, neither achieves a coherent resolution. The limited-edition boxed set includes a soundtrack CD and a charm like the ones Miyu and her friend Chisato carry. (Unrated but suitable for ages 16 and older: considerable violence, nudity, grotesque imagery, suggested lesbianism and incest) --Charles Solomon

I love the whole little-vampire-girl-protects-the-planet kinda thing going on
here. I was expecting a simple retelling of the OVA, but it's not the same.

Also.. to people having problems playing these DVD's, or low-quality-looking
discs... You bought the BOOTLEG version.
Here's a tip people. If it says IMPORT and ENGLISH DUBBED in the same
sentence, then it's a bootleg. The US licensing companies don't dub it here
and then send it back to japan....
      You got ripped off.

      4 out of 5 stars Kyuuketsuki Miyu.......2005-11-18

Miyu is the Guardian, destinted to destroy the Shinma. These supernatural creatures feed off human weekeness, so miyu must send them back into the darkness. Most of the episodes end sadly. Why does Miyu wait so long to act against the Shinma? Doesn't she care, or is there a different reason? Miyu cares for her companion Larva, but does not attach herself to outsiders
I do wish that the series had a better conclusion. It feels somewhat unfinished. There should have at least been a movie if this is the ending. however, the soundtrack is just gorgeous, and is a great bonus. Fans of ghost in the Shell may recognise Kenji Kawai as the composer.
If you are a fan of vampires or horror anime, then check this series out.

I just managed to get my hands on the Ultimate boxed set and I can say I am far from being impressed after watching the first volume. Although it is one of my favorite anime series, the DVDs were poorly done. Half the DVD players I tried wouldnt even play them properly, the bitrate seems to be quite low, and the Ops and Eds were cut to only be displayed during the first and last episodes on the DVD. Hell, Id almost think I had gotten a bootleg by mistake. Even more disappointing is that it appears noone even bothered to translate the ed lyrics. Overall, I would say I paid alot more then I should have for the boxed set.
