Customer Reviews:
Great movie, average HD performance.......2007-09-05
I love this movie, but it doesn't seem like it looks significantly better than it did on DVD. Worth having if you don't already own it on DVD.
good video, great audio.......2007-08-12
This disk has very good (above average) video transfer, but what really shines is its Chinese uncompressed PCM audio track. After watching the movie, I long for Chinese traditional music on blu-ray. Listen to the full sound track of "Ambush From All/Ten Sides" in uncompressed PCM will be heavenly.
Movie-wise, I like the art directions and the special effects. But some of the actors appear to be rather wooden (the barber and Chow's pal, for example). I also found this movie isn't as funny as I hoped it to be.
Blu-ray Goodness.......2007-05-15
I've got this movie on DVD, UMD, and now Blu-ray. I'll leave IMDB to tell you about the movie.
I don't have an HD TV (don't ask), so I can't really comment on the picture quality. I'm not an audiophile, so I can't really comment on the sound quality (although on DD5.1 it sounds just fine).
Go ahead and pick it up!!
Great Comedy Action Movie.......2007-05-12
This is definitely one of the better action movies I have seen in a long time. The comedy in the movie is also worth a watch. Stephen Chow tells a great story with absolutely amazing special effects. I have watched this movie many times and watching it on Blu-Ray is an experience in itself.
From the opening sequence, you are drawn to the plot and Stephen's portrayal of his character is first-class. His tribute to Bruce lee is evident throughout the film.
This is definitely a MUST WATCH for all!
great addition to my blu-ray collection.......2007-03-18
Didn't expect much from single layer 25 gig mpeg-2 with extras, but I was totally impressed w/ the transfer. Great movie to add to my ever growing collection.

Blood Simple made it clear that the cinematically precocious Coen brothers (writer-director Joel and writer-producer Ethan) were gifted filmmakers to watch out for. But it was the outrageously farcical Raising Arizona that announced the Coens' darkly comedic audacity to the world. It wasn't widely seen when released in 1987, but its modest audience was vocally supportive, and this hyperactive comedy has since developed a large and loyal following. It's the story of "Ed" (for Edwina, played by Holly Hunter), a policewoman who falls in love with "Hi" (for H.I. McDonnough, played by Nicolas Cage) while she's taking his mug shots. She's infertile and he's a habitual robber of convenience stores, and their folksy marital bliss depends on settling down with a rug rat. Unable to conceive, they kidnap one of the newsworthy quintuplets born to an unpainted-furniture huckster named Nathan Arizona (Trey Wilson), who quickly hires a Harley-riding mercenary (Randall "Tex" Cobb) to track the baby's whereabouts. What follows is a full-throttle comedy that defies description, fueled by the Coens' lyrical redneck dialogue, the manic camerawork of future director Barry Sonnenfeld, and some of the most inventively comedic chase scenes ever filmed. Some will dismiss the comedy for being recklessly over-the-top; others will love it for its clever mix of slapstick action, surreal fantasy, and homespun family values. One thing's for sure--this is a Coen movie from start to finish, and that makes it undeniably unique. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Vowing to go straight, a convenience store banditt (Nicolas Cage) proposes marriage to the police departments photographer (Holly Hunter). All is wedded bliss until they discover she's unable to get pregnant and are turned down by every adoption agency in town. It does not take long before they realize the only solution is to kidnap one of the town's celebrated quintuplets and hit the road!

funniest movie ever.......2007-07-19
This is one of the funniest, greatest most quotable movies ever made. "Son, you got a panty on your head." Nuff said.
Funniest Movie of All Time.......2007-06-25
Seriously...even better than the classics...Caddyshack, etc.
This is one smart, funny movie that will stand the test of time.
The desert flower of films.......2007-04-04
Take it from me, I have seen ALOT of movies in my time and this has got to be my secret all time favorite. Its just so well made, from the score, the cast, the story, the cinematography, the pace, the mood... I honestly don't know if I have seen a better film. If you like this flick or any Coen film really, check out Magnolia by P.T. Anderson also. :)
A flawless accomplishment.

Mike Myers's first feature role without his Wayne's World wig is a performance at odds with the best interests of the movie. Myers plays a single guy who always manages to find something seriously wrong with each of his girlfriends. His new love (Nancy Travis), a butcher, may be the perfect woman, except for one thing: she might be a "black-widow" killer who prefers dispatching husbands with a sharp instrument. Robbie Fox's original script has a fine shape and strong, black-comedy material within it. But Myers creates unnecessary dissonance by playing a variety of characters (including an irascible Scotsman like the one he often played on Saturday Night Live) and accenting his skills as an improvisational comic (such as impersonating the soothing cadences of a massage therapist). It's not that Myers isn't funny doing all that, but it has nothing to do with the movie. Directed by Thomas Schlamme (Miss Firecracker). --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
The critics should be ashamed of themselves!.......2007-09-03
Unlike most people I actually pay attention to critics as I have burned by the hype way too often. Like most great cult films though they really missed on this one. The one liners are top 100 classic and the great supporting cast get the film through potentially slow points. Nancy travis is especially brilliant in a role that is designed to be ambigious. Bottom line, get the DVD, watch, repeat.
What can I say? Mike Myers...........2007-08-27
I saw this movie on tv recently and had to have it on DVD. Mike Myers is hilarious...and the beautiful Nancy Travis sweetens the deal. My friends and I occasionally repeat some of the funny lines from this movie, so...it's a must-have for my collection. Downside: no special features....like a gag-reel, etc.. C'mon....this is Mike Myers we're talking about....there have got to be some outtakes (which should have been included). I believe this movie was out on VHS first, so...maybe they weren't doing outtakes back then(???). Funny movie.
GREAT MOVIE.......2007-08-24
THIS IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES. ITS FUNNY AND YET HAS SERIOUS ASPECTS AT THE SAME TIME. A MUST SEE
I love this movie.......2007-05-19
As with most good movies, the main characters might be the worm, but the backups are what reel you in. This movie is so very watchable, and Mike Meyers is actually funny (!!) in it, but for me, it's all about Anthony La Paglia and Alan Arkin. Sure, it's maybe three scenes in the entire movie, but they really steal the show.
This is a seriously underrated movie. Watch it. You won't regret it.
A slice of life.......2007-05-06
Charlie Mackenzie (Mike Myers) self made poet, has successfully avoided tying the knot with several women by finding out their flaws in the "nick" of time. Looks like his luck may be running out.
He falls in love with the local butcher, Harriet Michaels (Nancy Travis), who may be more of a cut-up than she appears. Will Charlie Axe-cept her at face value or will his suspicious nature once again interfere with marital bliss?
If he takes the plunge will his friend (Anthony LaPaglia) find out that Charlie is not paranoid and come to his rescue (in time)?

Customer Reviews:
This was a fun new look into the old-style martial-arts movie........2007-09-12
The Axe Gang goes where it wants, does what it wants, and harrasses and oppresses whoever it wants. One day the gang shows up in a small town -- a town which tried to stay out of trouble -- to see about a small disturbance. Instead of imposing its will, the Axe Gang discovers the town's secret: Three Kung Fu masters have taken refuge there, unbeknownst even to each other. With damaged pride and reckless determination, the Axe Gang sets out to eliminate the three masters and take over the town. While the war wages, one enterprising young man tries to gain membership with the Axe Gang.
The movie was made in an entertaining style that is satirical of decades of martial-arts movies. Consider it Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with a sense of humor (I hate to use CTHD as an example, but it seems to be the most well-known movie to use the exagerated fight scenes).
This was so close to being a great movie to me. I really liked it and only have one complaint, and it is minor. One of my favorite elements to the movie was the dancing. It was a perfect element to a martial arts movie. Here was another choregraphed scene, dancing not fighting. And can't we get philosophical and say that in many ways fighting could be viewed as a crude form of dance? (Maybe I'm reaching a little bit there.) But the dancing occurs only when the Axe Gang has its confidence and as soon as it sees there is a legitimate challenger to its power, the dancing stops. And that disappointed me, but like I said before, it is only minor.
The plot is completely outrageous. If you do not like live-action movies with ridiculous story lines, Kung Fu Hustle is not a movie for you. If you want an atypical martial-arts movie that might make you laugh, check it out. I really liked Kung Fu Hustle.
Do the Hustle........2007-06-06
Inventive. Action-packed. Absurd. Hilarious. Touching. Violent. Lively. Smart. And above all else- Superb.
You don't need all of those adjectives to describe a great movie, but you do when describing Stephen Chow's masterpiece Kung Fu Hustle. Taking place in 1940s China, our story involves the hundreds-strong Axe Gang, their efforts to take over the impoverished and dilapidated Pig Sty Alley, and the effects on Pig Sty's tenants. The gang believes taking or Pig Sty will be a cakewalk, but a few of the residents aren't about to let that happen.
Perhaps the most unique thing about the film is how our attention is shifted from one protagonist to another. The first part focuses on three Kung Fu experts (a baker who carries a wooden staff that can shatter metal guns, a hardworking laborer, and a sensitive homosexual tailor). The second part is about Pig Sty's tyrannical chain-smoking landlady and her philandering landlord husband. And the third part concerns a loser (played by Chow) who tries to take up life of crime because of a traumatic childhood incident when he tried to do good deed. I've read critics pan KFH because it lacks one true central character, but I just call it doing something different. Oh well, whatever gets those critics through those long and lonely nights.
Unconventional narrative style aside, there are plenty of other reasons to watch such as the eye popping effects and the humor. Ordinarily, I can't stand CGI, but I really love the way it was used here. Chow succeeds in using it in ways that most American filmmakers can't even dream about. A gut-busting Looney Toons inspred foot chase and a fight with two evil street musicians both have to be seen to be believed. Who needs people like Michael Bay who timidly believes he is pushing the envelope, while Chow demolishes the whole stationery store?
Kung Fu Hustle Review.......2007-06-02
This was a great movie, containing a segment from almost every genre known to man. I loved it. The best parts for me were the fighting scenes, where the action is choreographed to be almost a dance. Most prominent in theis movie is the comedy...after the first 5 or ten minutes...that had me laughing all the way through. Though there was a lot of fighting, it was light on violence. I would recommend this movie to viewers at least ten and up. Totally.
Great.......2007-04-18
As a high level martial artist I have to say this is the greatest martial arts movie since the Seven Samurai.
This is hilarious!.......2007-03-24
I rented this movie from Blockbuster, and after I watched it, I had to have it! This is a well written (of you like spoofs) hilarious movie! I'm also a huge fan of "Shaun of the Dead"! So if you like that type of "off beat" humor, you'll love this movie!

Laugh A Minute.......2007-07-23
Wow! For a movie that is in Cantonese, it is absolutley hilarious. Two misfits, dress up and pretend they are part of the Axe Gang thast run the town. Unknown to them, they walk into a village called Pig Sty Alley, where there are three Kung Fu masters and Two Higher Kung Fu masters who live there. They try to act tough and think they can bully the people. Then the real Axe gang show up and mayhem starts from there. But one of the misfits does not realize that he is also a Kung Fu master and by the end of the movie he has to fight the ultimate evil, and he uses and becomes the Kung Fu Master that he was destined to become. A very funny movie, that has a sweet ending. Subtitles are available in most languages. Watch out for the chase scene, that ends with a big billboard.
Hollywoodized Chop-Socky Send-up.......2007-02-07
There is a local cable station where I live that, late at night, often shows these tedious kung fu films that I can only assume are or were the mainstay for Hong Kong, Taiwan and some main land China film goers. Most of the action is between one or two young assailants and one older defender made up to appear older with white hair, puffy eyebrows and beard.) Foley artists I expect were exhausted after adding loud snaps and bangs to every contact between the fighters who, except for an occasional flip or ricochet off a tree, are fairly earthbound. And it is impossible to deduce from their barely subtitled dialogue what they are fighting about. Also, these battles almost always take place in a forest or rocky glen.
Recent kung fu epics like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hero; and House of Flying Daggers, to name only a few, have raised the bar both stylistically and in terms of production values. Stephen Chow, director and co-writer of Kung Fu Hustle, has taken the genre one step further: while keeping the high standards in fight choreography, special and trapeze effects, camera work and editing found in the aforementioned films, Chow produces an at first glance comedic kung fu movie that also incorporates American film genres, not only to inject this latter iconography into his story but also to expand the viewer's consciousness of the toll and meaning (or meaninglessness of) violence. It is obvious that Chow is an avid devotee of Hollywood: he appropriates 1930s musicals a la Fred Astaire in the dance Axe Gang leader Brother Sum and his mob do in their stronghold. Pig Sty Alley is a Chinese version a Bowery Boys back alley. Music, both traditional Chinese string orchestra and snippets from Western classical violin concerts, is used as a continuous underscore. And the physical comedy employed in the first half of the film - among them falls from buildings that do not injure, fist distorted features that snap back like rubber, running legs reduced to a cyclonic blur, people moved dozen of yards in less than a blink of an eye - all draw on Hollywood prototypes, especially the cartoons produced by Warner Brothers in the middle of the last century.
While the callous execution of a rival gang in the middle of the street has the expected comic twist and is nonetheless tolerated despite the carnage, the early death of the coolie, tailor and Donut the baker - the three initial defenders of the Pig Sty Alley - come, on reflection, as something of a shock. Who now is going to step up and defend Pig Sty Alley? The landlord and his wife come forward, revealing their mastery of the martial arts that is almost enough to conquer the Beast - almost, but not quite. Their salvation, and Shanghai's deliverance from the murderous tyranny of the Axe Gang is the transformation from street thug and gang wannabe (and secretly noble) Sing (played by director Chow) into a superfighter who finally vanquishes the Beast.
Throughout, the most vicious and powerful kung fu attacks barely graze the combatants, which maintains the sense of comedy even while the good guys are dying. Chow plays with this violent-comic, good-evil dichotomy with a master's touch. And yet on reflection we realize that more than good entertainment is at stake here. The violence is neutralized by the comedy, and yet the characters, who are so well drawn by this talented cast and its director, are taken from us too soon. Kung Fu Hustle plays this crafty game with us: amazing us with special effects-enhanced fight scenes, making us laugh with well timed and conceived comic bits and pratfalls, but in the end leaving us with an odd dissatisfaction, as much with the film as with the genre. Hollywood inspired images transcend the nominal crudeness of run-of-the-mill chop-socky far, but also raise the stakes in that the characters gain dimension, and in doing so leave the view bereft by their passing. While being more cartoonish, Kung Fu Hustle becomes more real.
Hung Fu Hustle comes highly recommended, and we can only hope that its sequel, due out in 2008, lives up to the standards set by this imaginative and unsettling film.
Awesome!.......2007-02-05
Kung Fu Hustle is a brilliant parody of western themes and mindblowing Kung Fu action from start to finish. Several viewings are required to digest all the action and symbolism. The ambiance made me feel like i was in China again, as the tenement house is realistic and authentic (designed by Stephen Chow) plus the music score is of traditional Chinese opera orchestra. Choreography, sets, costumes and colors are magnificent! An unforgettable comedy. The special features are fun and Ric Meyers did a great one on one interview with Stephen Chow, (this is his Masterpiece). You will not believe this (i didn't at first), but this a spiritual movie at a high level. Chow played the bad guy, but later in the movie, found enlightenment. Enjoy!
Great entertainment!.......2006-12-27
Just a blast! You'll never view martial arts the same way.
A true sleeper of kung fu satire.......2006-11-04
I first saw this movie as a rental, and my daughter and I couldn't stop laughing. Having a week on the rental, and a dull week, I watched it again a few days later- something I religiously avoid- and surprising to me, I was laughing as hard as the first time around. As that has never happened before, I heartily recommend this movie for anyone who has seen a Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, or the more "sophisticated" Crouching Tiger or Flying Dagger movies. This movie has subtle and slapstick humor (e.g., the unremovable cigarette in the matriarch's mouth), but is quite intelligent, and encompasses good cinematography with subtle effects (such as the visually vibrating heat waves as the bad guys first approach the slum village). Yes, it is cartoonish in parts, but is an intelligent cartoon, if that makes sense. I plan to buy a copy now for many future viewings.

He Just Needed A Hug..........2007-06-20
Poor John Kirby (Brian Libby), if only he'd taken his pills, all would have been well. Alas, he dropped them on the floor, leading to a husband and wife massacre by axe. John is then captured by police, escapes, and is gunned down by sheriff Stevens (Chuck Norris). John is revived and kept alive by looney doctors who try their new experimental serum on him. This turns Mr. Kirby into an indestructible juggernaut of death! Meanwhile, the sheriff is busy battling bikers and rekindling a romance w/ his ex-girlfriend. Soon John kills enough people to get the sheriff's attention. I like SILENT RAGE, and that's saying a lot since I'm no Chuck Norris fan. The scene where Kirby stalks and kills his old psychiatrist (Ron Silver) and his wife is fairly creepy. I also enjoyed the whole hospital-holocaust! I even got a kick (pun? what pun??) out of the karate-man vs. zombie-madman finalé! Very entertaining indeed...
Very Impressed .......2006-07-04
Dear Sir Or Madam:
I am writing to you to inform you of my response to my shipment from the above mention seller. I am very impressed with this seller and Give him a THUMBS UP.
Science created him, but can Chuck stop him?.......2006-06-23
Chuck does horror in the 1982 classic "Silent Rage" in which Chuck Norris, as Sheriff Dan Stevens, takes on a superhuman biological project gone bad in John Kirby. John Kirby was already dangerously disturbed before he was killed, but after he is brought back to life by a mad scientist, this guy is unstoppable!! I mean I am talking Michael Myers style!! John Kirby is evil, dangerous and deadly as he kills a bunch of people on his way to a match with Sheriff Dan Stevens and his karate kicks...will Chuck be a match for John Kirby? On paper, the answer is no, but with Chuck's karate kicks and chops having more power than shotgun blasts, one would have to give the edge to Chuck Norris in this matchup.
Notwithstanding Chuck Norris' notorious karate scene when he beats the butts of an entire biker gang in a bar all by himself, this movie does have some horror merit to it, although not much. First, you gotta love the music in this flick, especially John Kirby's theme or death song. Kirby does look mad and evil at times in this movie and is quite effective at presenting this look to the audience...I was especially impressed with his killings in the beginning before he became superhuman...brutal kills!!! That being said, this movie is very light to nil on scares.
Give John Kirby credit guys...this guy has skills. Can Chuck Norris stop him? Better check it out along with Chuck Norris's comic sidekick in the 80's classic karate horror flick named "Silent Rage". The kills are decent in this movie and the killer, John Kirby, is extremely formidable. The acting is average to slightly above average for this type of flick and there are moments where horror is evident as John Kirby stalks his victims. I must admit this is not a great or a good horror movie, but I do speak of "Silent Rage" with affection as it does not try to do too much with its simple plot.
The good thing about "Silent Rage" is that it stays within itself and does not try to do too much with silly twists. The creators of "Silent Rage" do a decent job of presenting an evil and maniacal killer with superhuman strength killing people for the sheer enjoyment of it; and it is up to Chuck Norris to stop John Kirby? After watching this movie myself, I do not know who is more unstoppable between the inhuman John Kirby and the infallible Chuck Norris. Check out Chuck Norris in "Silent Rage" NOW!! Do not expect a great horror movie and you should enjoy yourself mightily.
norris's charm carries this movie, but only so far.......2006-06-13
i like chuck norris movies and i like parts of this movie. norris is a lawman in a texas town, and as the movie opens we find a nut job talking to his doctor telling him that he's loseing it,and he does as he kills everyone in the house! of course chuck comes to take him in but in the course of the arrest the killer is shot and killed,so we think. 3 doctors use this nut to test a life saving drug on and it works better than they though because not only does it save him it makes him an even bigger nut and unkillable! now the nut starts to kill people off and chuck must stop him.of course chuck must also stop a biker gang and have a bar room fight along the way!
chuck really looks and acts better in this one than some of his early work, but with the "halloween" theme of unstopable killer wears it's self out early and try as he may norris just can't save this one alone, and with no help from the rest of the cast this one sinks slowly, but it does have a few good points and that is because of chuck!
See Norris hit a guy in the round tables with a pool cue!.......2006-06-05
John chops up some people (off screen) with an ax. Sheriff Dan Stevens (Chuck Norris) don't take kindly to that and smites him with some kicks to the face. John is taken to the hospital where some doctors secretly pump him full of a superhealing drug and it works. A little too well and John's back out on the street - in a snazzy Devo suit - killing people. Then he messes with Chuck's girlfriend and wins a one way ticket to pain.
Mediocre Norris film, there should have been less talking and more fighting. Also when the motorcycle flew through the window and lands in the parking lot why did it sound like a trash can?

You may never have heard of this neglected 1974 gem, but you've probably seen one of its many imitators. Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder (also look for Andrea Martin of SCTV fame) star as two residents of a sorority house that is emptying out as Christmas approaches. The atmosphere is jolly and carefree, except for an ongoing series of menacing telephone calls, and, oh yes, we've just seen someone climb into the attic with apparent ill intent. Kidder does some scene-stealing as the bad girl, Hussey illustrates one of the downsides to having beautiful long '70s hair, and Keir Dullea does a nice turn as the creepy boyfriend. Director Robert Clark knows that the unseen is far scarier than what can be seen and he ratchets up the tension beautifully, making good use of ominous shadows, and putting in nice touches like replacing the sound of a distraught woman's scream with the piercing ring of yet another ominous phone call. This is a terrific, well-made little movie that is genuinely sleep-with-the-lights-on scary. Don't miss it. --Ali Davis

Fantastic........2007-09-17
Black Christmas (Bob Clark, 1974)
"[censored] 5-4429." Margot Kidder's deadpan recital of a fake phone number to a numbskull cop has stuck with me as one of the best setups in movie history for the past twenty-five years. It's more impressive because, at the time, I had about as much knowledge of what she was on about as the cop (who ends up with an "aw, it's somethin' dirty, innit?" when the rest of the boys in the squad room break down in hysterics at his confused expression). For that matter, I was born at that odd time between the death of actual two-letter exchanges and their fading out in the movies, so when I saw Black Christmas, I didn't even know what a two-letter exchange was. And it was still awesome. I remembered nothing else about the movie, though, until I sat down to watch it again last weekend.
While the late Bob Clark is probably more remembered for his stupid teen sex comedies these days (Clark was the man behind Porky's), he started out his career with a trio of grimly humorous horror/suspense films that have, for better or worse, etched themselves deep into the public consciousness. Pieces of dialogue from them have become cliches, while scenes have been imitated endlessly in other, lesser horror films (Black Christmas even earned itself a bland remake in 2006). Black Christmas is the best of the lot, and stands as the first true North American slasher film (America would follow along a couple of years later with Alice, Sweet Alice).
The plot: at the start of the Christmas holidays, the members of a sorority house are stalked by a deranged killer who identifies himself as Billy. When house residents start disappearing, a loose alliance forms between the local lieutenant (John Saxon), a young activist musician (Keir Dullea), his girlfriend (Olivia Hussey), and an abrasive, drunk sorority sister (Margot Kidder) to try and figure out what's going on. As is to be expected with such an investigative team, if they're going to catch the guy, they're going to do it by accident. Things get worse when the lieutenant starts suspecting the musician.
[NOTE: the next paragraph contains what could be construed as spoilers. If you're planning on seeing the movie, do not read anything from here until the final paragraph.]
The genius of this movie (something Clark recognized enough to steadfastly refuse where the distribution company ordered him to reshoot the ending and make it less ambiguous) is that the incompetent nature of the onscreen detectives allows Clark to follow their lead even when the camera is set for an omniscient point of view; we never learn anything more than the characters do. It's simple, and it's brilliant, and the big twist at the end of Halloween looks cheap and tawdry in comparison. (In fact, the ending that it most resembles, to me, is that of Session 9.)
If you're a fan of the slasher film, this is a definite must, as much as any of the foreign slasher films that preceded it. It is from here that the North American movie machine took its twist on the slasher film, and anyone who's seen any of the good ones (or most of the bad ones) will recognize a great deal of this. However, more importantly, it has a number of things that a lot of slasher films were missing during the golden years (and almost all of the new breed lack): subtlety, characterization, subplots, humor that's actually funny, etc. Holds up exceptionally well after more than thirty years. ****
"It's Me...Billy".......2007-09-11
I had heard of this film, but had never watched it, and decided to watch the remake of Black Christmas that came out last year. That re-make is a piece of garbage, and I knew that there was no way this film, that has been deemed a classic horror masterpiece, could be that bad. And I'm happy to say that I was absolutely right! I really don't know what I can say that hasn't already been said about this really good horror film. Yes, this film pre-dates Halloween by about 4 years, and you can tell that are some elements of Halloween that had already been done in this movie. The biggest similarity to me, would be the Point of View camera work, where we see the house through the "eyes" of Billy as he hides in the attic or in the closet, or wherever. Just watch the first 5 minutes of Halloween, and you'll see that same technique. Anyway, the movie itself has a great story to it. I won't bother explaining it again, other reviewers have already done a much better job of doing that than I could do. But what I will say is that this movie has great suspense and horror elements in it. And it pretty much does it without much actual on-screen blood or violence. The obscene phone calls made by the killer throughout the film are done brilliantly, and really do sound creepy. Also, as one review mentioned, I love the way the movie is left open-ended. Without the audience finding out who exactly Billy is, where he came from, who Agnes was..all that stuff. This was one of the many problems with the crappy remake to this film. It tried to tell the whole backstory of the killer with a series of flashbacks, which was stupid as hell, to say the least. So if you're looking at a good suspenseful horror film, with a good story and decent acting,(John Saxson is great, though the sorority house mother is a bit over-the-top), then I suggest you pick this up. And don't forgot...before Michael Myers or Jason or Freddy ever showed up..there was Billy!!!!
Chilling.......2007-09-09
I thought the movie did a pretty good job. The phone calls always gave me chills and I liked that the killer was rarely seen. I always felt like I was trapped in the house with the killer and tried to get out. The middle does drag a little and I didnt like the ending all to much. There is not alot of gore but it was still well done. I highly recommend it to people who love horror movies.
Low budget, and it has held up remarkably well........2007-09-06
Obviously badly dated, but a fine example of what a good filmmaker is able to do with an unusual (hey, it was the first of its kind) story, and the support of a talented cast. At almost every level, very little weakness to be found.
Almost Perfect.........2007-08-23
I read about this film for about a year before i was convinced to purchase it..u know all the hype and i hate disappointment. I watch this movie at least once a week and i still get a creepy feeling(especially on Christmas Eve while playing Santa for the kids. NOT TO BE MISSED! Dont cheat urself and watch the remake first IT SUCKS!!!

This is a wonderful movie. It came out right when "Patch" was on Days of our lives. It was weird seeing him without the patch. Yum
Formula time passer.......2007-03-19
Jack and Jill play spooky with an Ouija Board (that looks creepier as time slowly passes.) Naturally they conjure up the wrong spirit. The spirit is a Jason want-a-be. We have the dumb cop that figures it out too late.
Of course no one stays in the car. You just have to axe-cept this film for what it is.
A side note is that the DVD has a commentary (10 years later) and the making of if you finished the movie and are still interested.
Dark Ladies: 'Conjure Wife' and 'Our Lady of Darkness'
Tawny's ghost story!.......2006-03-10
Tawny Kitean is without a doubt one of the most gorgeous women ever to grace the big-screen. It is unfortunate that her movie output has not been greater than what it has been. She is a beautiful red-head and there are not TOO many actresses in Hollywood in that mold!
The present movie is about how things go wrong when you tamper with a Ouiji board. Poor Tawny plays a character who becomes obsessed and possessed more & more by the board. For what it is, it is an OK film.
IF it didn't have Tawny, this film would not be worth seeing. She looks fantastic with her late-80s style "big" hair. There is also a brief glimpse of her nude as she steps out of the shower. But, you better have your "pause" button on your DVD player ready as it is a very quick shot.
What's all this "cheesy 80's horror" name calling??.......2005-09-21
Cheesy 80's horror?? hummmm??? what's good 90's horror?? Scream? I know what you did last summer, Jeepers Creepers!!! blah, blah, blah!! Some of the best horror flicks to ever come out were between the late 60's and late 80's. Sorry guys, the rest of the stuff you have now just doesn't make the "cut" and/or is ripped off from "80's cheeze". I wish you were born in that "cheezy era" because eventually the 90's and even 2010's (10"s) will be cheezy. At least we and our films had an identity and didn't have to be ok'ed by Ludicrous, P diddy, or 50 Cent...what a sad joke. Sorry.........
Witchboard........2005-07-21
It's o.k. I guess but if you expect it to be like night of the demons then forget it, the film was written and directed by Kevin Tenney who also made the excellent Night of the demons, the story takes place at an appartment where there is a party with friends, one of the geusts happens to be Linda's (Tawney Kitaen) ex-boyfriend and her current fiance (Todd Allen) is not pleased to see him so they argue alot. Linda's ex-boyfriend also happens to have brought a Ouija board with him so they use it at the party and contact the spirit of a young dead boy or thats what they think. Soon Linda gradualy becomes obssesed with the board then slowly becomes haunted and possesed by what seems like an evil spirit so its up to her fiance and ex-boyfriend who completely despise each other to help her out. Some mystereous deaths happen and Jim becomes a suspect, now what I didn't like about this film was that it was filled with cliche characters like the weird psychic and the aggresive detective who was determined to get Jim and the constant arguing and fighting between the two male characters was getting old real fast, but otherwise the film wasn't that bad it was pretty good but you might want to check Night of the demons first if you haven't seen it then get this film.

Customer Reviews:
Deep Disturbing - Horror Classic.......2007-09-16
If you are a fan of horror movies, then you must add Dario Argento's films "Deep Red" and "Suspiria" at the very least to your collection or risk losing your credibility . If you know the work of horror master Argento, then you are not reading this review. Imagine Alfred Hitchcock on steroids. Enough said.
Argento's Most Complete Film.......2007-07-09
One of the most frustrating aspects of watching Dario Argento's movies is the wide variance of quality between them. They can range from masterpieces to almost amateurish at times. "Deep Red" is in the former category, and I would consider it the best Argento film that I've seen. It has manages to combine comedy, suspense, and horror all quite effectively along with his trademark camera work. Like most giallos, "Deep Red" is more a murder mystery than a horror film, but unlike other giallos in which the identity of the killer is apparent to the audience early on, Argento keeps the viewer guessing until the end.
The first real Dario Argento film...........2007-06-18
To me, this is where Dario Argento's career really started. He had made 4 films prior to this (the "animal" trilogy, and a barely seen Western, The Five Days of Milan), but I never liked his early films (I saw The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Cat o' Nine Tails. Bird is decent, but rather boring. Cat is terrible, especially in its dubbed version). The amazing thing about Profondo Rosso (aka Deep Red...the original Italian title sounds so much better) is that even in its mutilated 98 minute version, it was still amazing (though incoherent) filmmaking. Essentially, the American distributor cut out 28 minutes of really important plot detail, but left most of the violence in the film. Now, Anchor Bay has given you the original film, and in the original Italian with English subtitles. The longer version is much more coherent, explaining the plotline and the motivations of the characters, and giving more of a role to Daria Niccolodi, Dario's girlfriend of 10 years. The music of Goblin (their 1st colloboration with Dario) is magnificent. It's just as good as their Suspiria soundtrack, and the fusion of Dario's cinematic sense and Goblin's music sense is one of the most fruitful colloborations in cinema history. The performances here are above average for a Dario film, with David Hemmings playing the usual English speaking artistic type getting caught up in a murder mystery (typical Argento plot). It's nice to see Argento's work restored, as almost EVERY film he did during his heyday was cut and sometimes renamed (for example, Phenomena was cut by 28 minutes and retitled Creepers, and Tenebrae was cut by 9 minutes and retitled Unsane). This was Dario's first masterpiece, and the beginning of a remarkable run for him up through his last great film, Opera. Many of Dario's films are really artistic and strikingly shot, something he's never really given credit for.
Jaw Dropping.......2007-05-18
This is not a contradiction: While Susperia is in my opinion the best horror film ever made, making it the scariest movie Argento has ever made, I still think that Deep Red (Profondo Rosso) is Argento's masterpiece. Why? While Deep Red is not as scary as Susperia, it is a better movie. Deep Red wins my vote as the best giallo film of all time. Buy this film at once. It demands repeated viewings. In this giallo, a jazz pianist witnesses a murder from the street and, feeling heroic, rushes into the building in attempt to aid the woman in peril. He runs into an apartment decorated with an abundance of paintings, only to find that the women is already dead. What follows hinges mainly on what has become Argento's main plot device in giallo films, namely, a mystery created in the mind of the main character of the film as a result of the fallability of human memory. As one character in the film states, memory is like a cocktail, and sometimes the flavors of past events get mixed up, becoming indistinguishable from one another. The Bird with the Crystal Plummage, Susperia, and Sleepless, to name a few, all contained mysteries pertaining to inaccurate, imperfect, or even blatantly false recollections of events which have come to pass. In Deep Red the main character swears that a painting has been stolen from the apartment he rushed into. He vividly remembers seeing one that is no longer there. The police dismiss his claims, saying he's mistaken. But there his memory is, lingering, haunting him, compelling him to play detective, as he becomes obsessed with jogging his memory. The entire issue in this movie pertaining to what he actually saw in the apartment is handled by the director geniously, for you too also get to see what the main character does, and likely will also miss it. I will say no more on the matter; I do not want to spoil the effect. This film is repleat with Argento's signature touches, the mobile camera, the black-gloved killer, and a brilliant use of color. Critics have often come down on this film, failing to give it the respect it deserves. One reason, I would surmise, is that the film as a whole is a bit tarnished by the corny relationship between David and Argento's once wife, Daria. These brief scenes aside, many of the sequences of this film dazzle the viewer with their technical mastery. The scene when David Hemmings keeps playing the piano with one hand though he hears an intruder on the other side of the door is masterfully executed, as are David's excursions into the creepy house with a hidden room. The editing in the film is nothing short of brilliant, as when the protagonists enter the school toward the end of the film. The picture cuts to various scenes, including the image of a bathroom wall with the graffito 'kill your parents.' The soundtrack to this film is one of Goblin's best. For interested readers, this film is actually a remake of Michelangelo Antonioni's masterpiece Blow Up, which also starred David Hemmings. There Hemmings played a photographer who, after photographing scenes in a park, swears he captured a murder in one of his photos. Though most critics prefer Blow Up to Deep Red, I, like Argento, find Blow Up's surreal conclusion to be a tremendous let down, and personally find Deep Red to be the superior of the two films. (Blow Up was also remade by Brian DePalma as Blow Out.)
good horror,classic giallo.......2007-05-12
excellent horror/giallo by dario argento.superb atmosphere, cinemaphotography, suspense, set piece work, good locations.personally i reckon this to be one of argentos best films along with 'suspiria'.compared to most other examples of the genre-great care and imagination has gone in to this one with great results.dvd quality is excellent with good subtitles(my preference when watching foreign films) and the film is of course completely uncut in widescreen.this is easily the best edition -can't see it being bettered.

Product Description
Stephen Chow (director and star of Shaolin Soccer) is at it again with his newest action-packed and comedic martial-arts adventure, Kung Fu Hustle. From wildly imaginative kung fu showdowns to dance sequences featuring tuxedoed mobsters, you've never seen action this outrageous and characters this zany! With jaw-dropping fight sequences by Yuen Wo Ping (famed action choreographer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Matrix), Kung Fu Hustle will blow you away! In a town ruled by the Axe Gang, Sing (Stephen Chow) desperately wants to become a member. He stumbles into a slum ruled by eccentric landlords who turn out to be kung fu masters in disguise. Sing's actions eventually cause the Axe Gang and the slumlords to engage in an explosive kung fu battle. Only one side will win and only one hero will emerge as the greatest kung fu master of all.
Customer Reviews:
New axe kicking edition reviewed, this is the original cut..........2007-07-27
Kung Fu Hustle is among my favorite films, not because I am a die-hard fan of Stephen Chow, but because I really liked the wild mix of comedy, adventure, crime caper and martial arts action. Most notably the excellent fight choreography by legendary Yuen Woo-Ping(who is also responsible for the fight scenes of Kill Bill vol. 1, Fearless, The Matrix, Hero). As I said, I love KUNG FU HUSTLE and am very much looking forward for its sequel in 2008, so forgive me if I am a bit biased. (I will try my best not to lose my objectivity)
The New "AXE KICKING EDITION" soon to be released by Sony is actually the REGION-3 Hong Kong release which I have. (I am certain)The Hong Kong release is still the one to go for if you have a multi-region dvd player. Since I almost know for certain that only fans of the film will be interested in this new edition, I will skip the plot summary. ( for those of you who haven't seen it, you may look up my review under the original U.S. DVD.)
I will go straight to the differences between the previous dvd release and this new "Axe-kicking edition"(original Hong Kong release):
Mild spoilers ahead---
Scene 1; The landlady throws her husband out of a window and drops a flower pot on the back of his head. The original cut showed a small pool of blood coming from his face, but the U.S. version digitally omitted it. The blood now appears as part of the film.
Scene 2; Sing heckles/insults the residents of Pig Sty Alley and gets hit in the tummy by a woman. The original cut showed Sing spitting up blood which landed on the woman's face, but the U.S. version digitally removed the blood (though some still appeared around Sing's mouth). The blood now appears in this release.
Scene 3; This may be more offensive to others; it takes place in the evening before the big attack on Pig Sty Alley. The Hong Kong cut showed a man taking a d--p onto a piece of paper as the camera panned by, but the American version digitally removed the offensive dookie. Now the paper is no longer blank. Score one for "Mr. Poo"!
Scene 4; Sing confronts "The Beast" in the casino, he gets hit hard on the chest twice. After the 2nd hit, blood sprays on The Beast's face and Sing is shown reeling backwards with blood spurting from his mouth. The U.S. version PREVIOUSLY removed both of these sequential shots.
Scene 5; Also in the casino, Sing's head is hit on his face, hammered into the ground by The Beast. After the first hit, The Beast's bloody fist is seen emerging from the floor in slow motion...but the U.S. version removed this shot entirely.
Now for the DVD Picture and Sound quality--
2.35 Anamorphic Widescreen. The Picture is extremely sharp with solid Black levels. Colors are natural and enhancements are not noticeable. CGI effects suffer a bit of softness. But the transfer is clean and nice. It is the Hong Kong transfer from what I can tell.
Sound is in 5.1 Dolby/2.0 surround in English, French & Cantonese. I am a bit disappointed why Sony still didn't include the Cantonese 5.1 DTS track as in the original Hong Kong release. Why?!
EXTRAS: Stephen Chow interview--Bloopers/outtakes--Featurettes: w/ Yuen Woo-Ping, Oliver Wong(Production designer), Shirley Wong(Costumes)
Storyboard comparison--trailers--audio commentary
CLOSING: Kung Fu Hustle is one of the more entertaining imports. It mixes pop culture blends, over-the-top comedy, hard-hitting action while maintaining a profound respect for the spirit of Kung Fu. This new region 1 release is a bit confusing, while it contains the original cut of the film, it misses the original special features. I wouldn't advise a "double dip" for fans who own the first REGION 1 dvd, but for fans who doesn't own the movie, pick this new version up. However, the lack of DTS sound is a huge minus for this version. I STILL prefer the ORIGINAL Hong Kong region-3 release!
RECOMMENDED!! (Timidly)
