Only Reviewing "The Plague of the Zombies".......2005-10-24
I haven't been able to see "The Mummy's Shroud" but I have seen "The Plague of the Zombies." It is an innovative and entertaining zombie film. A series of mysterious deaths and some strange activities in the old abandoned mines outside of town are all tied together in an insidious plot. Can the hero save the town and his headstrong daughter?
Fans of "The Evil Dead" movies will notice some shots that seem very familiar as the dead rise from their graves.

Description
In the near future, the world has been ravaged by a plague of unspeakable horror. A new carb-burning diet enzyme is all the rage until test subjects begin craving red meat and will stop at nothing to get it! Overwhelmed by the numbering flesh-eating populus, the government pulls back into walled-off cities known as "safe zones" where only the wealthy are allowed. In a large southern city a group of survivors known as the Dregs struggle to stay alive, the prey of two enemies the flesh-eating living dead and a psychotic band of mercenaries known as the "Upper Class."
Into this world comes Kane a stranger with a mysterious past and a skill for tackling the zombies head-on. After being taken in by the Dregs, he's soon introduced to Adam, leader of the Upper Class, who has his own sinister designs on the loner. ZOMBIE PLANET is a blood-drenched, high-energy epic melding post-apocalyptic atmosphere into traditional zombie mythos while delivering a tongue-in-cheek warning about the dangers of no-carb diets gone horribly awry!

Not a bad B movie but..........2007-07-08
Hey the movie had some great plot...but the idea isn't very new...Sliders did an episode that had the same exact plot--a Diet craze that causes people to crave protein, turning them into zombies who are light sensitive. The acting was a overdone on parts, but for a B movie I thought the scenes, special effects and the characters were great...did I want to spend 18 dollars on it-no- but since it helps support the zombie genre, I'm willing to.
Whatever the criticisms, it's a zombie movie so I'm happy! and a whole lot better then Shatter Dead (great plot, horrible execution, horrible movie).
Needs More Zombie Action!!!.......2005-08-16
This movie has a okay plot but just some really bad actors. The acting below average the set is good but the actors need help. It just seems to drag on with little action. I really thought this movie would take off but it just stood their the whole time. I'm really surprised there is going to be a second one. I paid $17.00 Dollars for this I really wish I did'nt. There are better films out their I suggest take a chance on something else.
Have to be an indie film lover.......2005-07-01
I'd have to say that all in all I really enjoyed the movie, it had a great story line, and really good special effects. There could have been some more gory zombie scenes, but the creativity in the story make up for it. The acting for the most part was decent, in some instances some of the main actors do a great job, and I really enjoyed one of the fight scenes towards the end. I base these facts on the point that I watch alot of b movies and understand that the budget isn't there, and I have seen alot of crappy movies, and I didn't watch it expecting a gore scene every second, but I was impressed by the depth of the story and the characters. I would recomend this movie to anyone who is an indie buff, you'll really enjoy it, and I am looking forward to purchasing part 2
put the "B" in zombie.......2005-06-29
I really don't mind a b flick but this was just silly. I'm even ok with with a little bad acting as long as you make up for it with some good carnage and gore. But no, this one's a real let down.
Zombie Planet...let's have some more zombie action!.......2005-04-21
This movie seemed incapable of moving (and considering I can tolerate anything as long as there's a strong finish) or going anywhere.
This is mainly about two groups of people: the "upper class" (Bad People!) versus...well, the not upper class, in a movie about carb diets turning people into zombies, but the zombies seem to have little to do with the two groups of people fighting over dominion, food, and their personal safety--which could be cool, but done very boring and without a climax.
Bottom line:
Little gore, plot sucks, it lasts almost two hours, and for what, I keep asking myself, since there is no final battle with zombies vs. people, and finally, if you're going to make a bad horror movie, at least grace us with some nudity.
Skip this one.

Anticipating Night of the Living Dead by a couple of years, the John Gilling-directed Plague of the Zombies gives the gothic treatment to the stumbling undead. André Morell plays an unassuming medical professor called by a former student, village doctor Peter Tompson (Brook Williams), to investigate a mysterious plague in a small Cornish village. They uncover an unholy plot by the devilishly decadent local Squire (John Carson), who has been using black magic to create an army of laborers to work his failing tin mine and has now infected William's sickly young wife. Gilling sets a spooky atmosphere, a fog-drenched village where the inhabitants live as if under a cloud of doom, dominated by the arrogant squire, who bullies his way about with his gang of cruel, aristocratic thugs. The film's highlight is the eerie introduction of the zombies, clawing their way up through the earth and emerging as lumbering, death-masked ghouls. The film has been remastered from the original 35mm negatives in the Hammer vaults, and letterboxed to its original aspect ratio. --Sean Axmaker

Zombie Invasion in Cornwall....Well 5 or 6 Zombies!.......2006-09-03
"Plague of the Zombies" is one of Hammer's more curious and therefore interesting productions of the 1960's. The 1960's saw Hammer diversify their film forms and in addition to their colour gothic horrors, they also produced monochrome psychological thrillers in the mould of Hitchcock such as "Maniac" and a range of films for the summer holidays to be enjoyed by children such as "Captain Clegg" and "The Devil Ship Pirates" in many ways "Plague of the Zombies" also steps out of the normal gothic horror formula that Hammer proliferated with in this decade, and suggests that Hammer are slightly more adventurous and innovative than modern critics would perhaps give them credit for. Hammer shot this film and "The Reptile" back to back and both share in common a rural Cornish setting. This setting is used to highlight the by now familiar class concerns that run right through the entirety of Hammer's output. "Plague of the Zombies" offers a particularly nihilistic and unpleasant view of this issue, by showing a lower class exploited in life and in death, seemingly offering no escape for these classes from the yolk of oppression. The film also has some other interesting layers, most notably issues surrounding colonialism and also some intriguing depictions of race relations. The film is also not without its creepy and atmospheric moments, a nightmare sequence ending with a memorable beheading is just one of the highlights of a film that has more to say than the usual Hammer production. Director John Gilling, something of a veteran at this point does very well, with a fairly slim narrative and Andre Morell after many years playing second fiddle, gets to lead a Hammer film and produces a capable if somewhat bad tempered performance. Unfortunately the commercial failure of this and "The Reptile" would mean Gilling would never again helm a Hammer film, which is a great shame. As Hammer's only entry into the Zombie sub-genre this is perfectly worthy. Just three years later George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" would use a similar form to pick apart problems in a society with his allegorical and downbeat message; "Plague of the Zombies" does much the same thing.
Solid Hammer House Movie .......2005-01-09
Firstly, the movie doesn't involve a plague of zombies at all, rather a modest collection of them being used as illegal workers underground in a tin mine - remember "101 uses for a dead cat"? Despite this, all the usual Hammer type features are here: the superstitious villagers blind to what is happening under their noses, the outsider running his own investigation by digging up bodies in the middle of the night, cigars and brandy around the fire, the deranged squire who hides the evil secret in his castle and of course - a fiery finale. This is a most enjoyable film, with good straight faced actors who act well, and bring you along for the ride. This is about what you would expect from a good solid hammer film. This is a fun movie to watch on a lost weekend over a bottle of wine.
One of the very best Hammer films!.......2005-01-01
This is one of the finest horror films produced by Hammer Films in the Sixties. It features great sets, fine acting, and several genuinely chilling moments. It loses a star because some of the story elements in the ending feel too much like "uh-oh... we're on page 83 of the script, so it's time to wrap things up!"
Great 60s Movie.......2004-07-31
Not only is this a great example of the kind of stylish, elemental period thriller that Hollywood is utterly incapable of making, it's great fodder for examination of race issues in pre-psycehedelic England. Sting once said that Jimi Hendrix was the first black man he ever saw in the flesh, and with that in mind I was struck by the way the image of the black man is used in this film (voodoo ritual scenes complete with frantic bongo drumming) to convey that telling combination of evil and exoticism. When Hendrix hit the London scene - around the same time this film was made - he was described as the "Wild Man of Borneo", with the same overtones: frightening but sexy. Whether you see this as racist or just an expression of repressed sexuality - or both - is for armchair sociologists to decide. In retrospect, the portrayal seems less overtly racist than just kind of naive, the last gasp of an uptight culture about to get "Experienced" by Lucy in the Sky, Satanic Majesties, Tommy and the rest.
That said, this movie is a great yarn that accomplishes what horror directors can't do anymore: write a script that knows when to take itself seriously and when not to. Modern horror films just push the plausibility envelope to the point of stupidity, and overwhelm themselves with special effects. Movies like POTZ have a great sense of pacing and perspective, with just the right amount of this here and that there. Am I making sense? Just watch the movie and you'll see what I mean!
Deservedly influential horror.......2004-07-27
One of Hammer's best directors, John Gilling, has turned out an excellent piece of horror whose influence on the zombie subgenre, especially in terms of its impressive imagery, has been significant.
Admittedly, there are a few faults: Diane Clare is rather unconvincing; Brook Williams overacts; the script, while very good overall, suffers occasional lapses. However, these weaknesses are outweighed by an otherwise excellent cast and execution. It is hard not to see shades of Christopher Lee in John Carson, superb as the outwardly charming, inwardly villainous Squire. Andre Morell is strong as usual in the role of the main protagonist.
Like Gilling's next film, The Reptile, made back-to-back on the same sets, Plague of the Zombies's thematic centre is power, authority and oppression, and the film is full of ironic role-reversals, all of which foreshadow the Squire's eventual demise, the triumph over imperialism and tyranny.
But if the sophisticated subtext makes it all sound rather too dark and heavy-going, don't be put off: This is a ripping good horror tale in Hammer's best and most enjoyable style.
Product Description
Tromaville's Little Belgium comes under siege from flesh-eating zombies in PARTS OF THE FAMILY. A crazed criminal robs a bank and gets more than he bargained for when one of his hostages, a curvacious Swedish girl, develops a taste for human flesh. Chaos and carnage ensue, porn star Ron Jeremy makes a surprise appearance, and plenty of dismembered limbs and other bloody delights litter the screen. Adding to the on-screen eccentricities, there are two different versions of the film included here, which have the same story but are shot by different directors.
