Writer-director Meir Zarchi's controversial story of rape and revenge has lost none of its ability to shock viewers since it first gained notoriety in the late '70s. Camille Keaton (grand-niece of Buster Keaton and, later, Zarchi's wife) stars as a young woman who is terrorized and then brutally assaulted by four men while on vacation. After slowly pulling herself together, she methodically tracks down and butchers each of the perpetrators. Zarchi's film has been consistently accused of celebrating violence against women, and while the rape scenes are graphic, they also lack the voyeuristic qualities that earmark other similarly plotted exploitation films. If anything, Zarchi is guilty of awkward scripting; the dialogue is leaden, and Keaton's transformation from victim to avenger is too swift. But to label him a pornographer is wrong, and while the film is challenging--perhaps more than most audiences can bear--its depiction of the psychology of violence is undeniably powerful. --Paul Gaita

I spit on this DVD.......2007-09-17
I remember watching this movie many years ago and thinking `how can anyone watch this junk?' Well, many years later I have (I hope) grown more tolerant and appreciative of more experimental, grind house 1970s films. As with my opinion of "Caligula", my thoughts on "I Spit on Your Grave" haven't changed much. The plot (such as it is) revolve around a woman who is brutally raped (this takes up 50 minutes of a 100 minute movie) in the woods by four evil rednecks with nothing better to do apparently. Then she implausibly lures them all to their death by "Friday the 13th" like set ups and then gory punch lines. Not that I have a problem with women-getting-even movies, but a female "Death Wish" this is not (indeed, try Jodie Foster's "The Brave One", now that is a smart female revenge thriller). I know that many respected critics (including Roger Ebert) went on a crusade to have it banned when it was first released. I think that was probably overkill and actually contributed to its notoriety. If left alone it may have just went away quietly, but now it has a reputation, and such controversial films MUST be seen, right. So now we have some kind of pseudo-classic, where it should be just another piece of junk that should just fade away. I know that many of the films fans are going to write me to tell me how wrong I am and how I just don't get it. Well, ok. I just want it known that this is just my opinion, I just don't prefer it.
It did what it said, it said what it did........2007-08-17
This movie is a fusion, a cinematic expression of violent sexual acts and justifyable homicide. While the hairstyles, and even the haircuts ;} forever date the film as a 70's drive in sexploitation flick, there is enough wrong going around in this picture to wind the broken clock of even the most ardent gorehound or woman's prison movie aficiondo. It just begs for a remake, but of course that will never happen until society collapses entirely. Here's hoping! I just wish the main character didn't look like she had Buckwheat in a scissorlock for the duration of the rougher scenes.
brOOtal .......2007-07-24
This movie's just wrong on so many levels. I've seen a lot of movies in this genre, but this one takes the cake! Not only do they degrade this woman, but do it over....and over....and over....and over. Most of the time without using cuts or editing and just focusing on the girls torment. It's obviously a rip-off of Last house on the Left, but IMO takes it a little further, and pushes the limits of what's exceptable in horror cinema. This is sleaze at its finest, horror brought to a whole new level of jaw-dropping filth.
I Spit on Your grave = definition of horror.
Check it out.
It didnt suprise me.......2007-06-19
I was afraid to watch this one for a long time considering what i heard of it. The plot is simple, some writer lady goes to the country and ends up being raped and assaulted by 4 ignorant backwoods types then one when one of them dosent go through with the job of 'taking care of her' she comes back for revenge. It was sick, yes, It was you can say brutal in a way, but i can see something like this happening. I mean it didnt shock me considering ive actually met people like this that were maybe a couple inches away from doin something like that. Theres 2 types of people, normal good people and people that are a couple inches away from doing something sick like this. A bunch of guys gettin together, real ignorant types and then pullin something like this, yea, i can see it. The stupidity of one of them made me sick. He was like just doing whatever he was told. Then came 'the revenge'. Plain and simple, not much else. I cant say i could see someone really 'enjoying' watching this but i cant say it was so bad i wouldnt tell you not to see it. I dont think a normal person would have much interest in this one. People who love horror? maybe. Its a hit or miss.
Classic Nastie!.......2007-05-02
"Spit" is one of my all time favourite little "nasties".
It's sick alright and still very disturbing, even though it was made way back in 1978. Ok, it's low, low budget, but that's why it works.
The film's lack of music throughout makes it all the more off putting.
Camille Keaton, as the victim, is an absolute trouper.
Rodney, is Gold.
This Millennium Edition of "Spit" is something my brother and I used to joke about. Ever since we first caught "Spit" at the Drive In on it's original release, the idea of a special edition of "Spit" was something we only ever dreamt of one day owning.
To have it like this, THX Certified Transfer, Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1, looking and sounding like it was made yesterday, with extras laid on, you've got to be kidding.
And that cover ain't half bad either....hey?
Warning:Definately not for the kiddies.
