Jon Favreau wrote a fantastic script; Doug Liman directed a great flick; Vince Vaughn owned the film. 'Nuf said!

OK, maybe a little more. This has got to be one of, if not THE, greatest indie films of all time.

And, like I said, BIG MONEY doesn't make a great movie. There have been plenty of big dollar box office flops, but you can probably count on 1 hand (maybe 2) the number of films that were made for what equates to peanuts and still totally own every minute on the screen.

This was an instant cult classic, acclaimed by critics, and it got the big-time attention it deserved later on.

Mike, an every day "joe", broke up with his girl, moved to L.A. to be a comedian, and settled in to a long time funk. His "west coast" pals, some real characters (enter Vince Vaughn and Patrick Van Horn), give him all the right advice which Mike uses at the wrong time. His "east coast" pal (Ron Livingston) tries to keep Mike grounded.

But, basically what you get is a train wreck in the love department, backlit by the glitz of Vegas and the back-alley bar scene of L.A. Anyone can relate to Mike and most of us have had moments like the other guys too.

Just check out this movie. A review or summary just can't do it justice. It is intelligent, sappy (in a good way), relatable and HILARIOUS.

Great movie, with lots of one-liners, and a must-see for the serious Vince Vaughn fan. Jon Favreau is perfect as his buddy, Mike, whose lines in the movie cannot be forgotten. Captures the ideal late '90's swing era to a T.

Few films have explored the pain of being a 20-something single as hilariously as Doug Liman's classic "Swingers." If you've never seen this film, which packs a bevy of memorable scenes and spawned several catch phrases ("You're so money!"), it's high time you checked it out.

"Swingers" follows the ups and downs (mostly downs) of Mike (Jon Favreau), a struggling actor who has recently moved to Los Angeles from New York. When he moved, he left behind a girlfriend of six years, and he hasn't been able to get her off his mind, a problem that's exasperated by his lack of success on the L.A. singles scene.

Fortunately for Mikey, he's got some buddies who are bent on cheering him up, most notably the smooth-talking Trent (Vince Vaughn), who convinces Mike to make an impromptu trip to Vegas to wash away his problems with gambling, women and booze. It's the first of many unsuccessful (and roaringly funny) forays into the singles scene for Mikey, who is alternately too nice, too nervous, and too neurotic to achieve any level of success with the ladies.

This sort of material has been mined with much less success by many movies, but "Swingers" has three noteworthy forces working for it: star Favreau's superb script, a great cast and Liman's top-notch direction.

The witty screenplay delivers enough laughs and memorable lines to reward repeat viewings, from Trent's boast that he's going to "Find me two cocktail waitresses and pull me a Fredo" to a hilarious conversation between Mike, Trent and the rest of the crew about how long you should wait before calling a girl whose "digits" you got.

Liman, who also directed the excellent "Go," throws in a a number of deft touches that add to the script. Check out the slo-mo walking scene that's an amusing homage to Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs." Or the unusual imagery complete with "Jaws" music to illustrate Trent's growing discomfort with a girl he just met.

The ensemble cast is terrific, with special kudos to the two leads, Favreau and Vaughn. Favreau is outstanding as the lovable nice-guy loser Mike, giving a deeply funny and even touching performance. Case in point: Mike's ill-advised attempt to leave a message on the answering machine of a hottie he met just a few hours before. As the womanizing Trent, Vaughn exudes star charisma, delivering his lines with flair without falling into cartoonish excess.

Despite its low budget and unknown (at the time) director and cast, "Swingers" became a modest indie hit. Now, a decade after its release, great word-of-mouth buzz has transformed it into a deserving cult classic.

A fair treatise on the random order of Life.......2007-05-12

The turbulence, despair, and despondency of navigating the multiple persons that occupy the space between significant relationships is obvious in this film. Although the production of this movie is fair, the arbitrary chance at play in meeting someone of significance is painfully well-represented here. Although I think this movie gets better with a second view, and it is a possible "sleeper", I would not consider it as part of a "Collector's Series" - seems like a stretch, an overzealous marketing effort.

Spend your money on one of Leary's performances, not this painfully unfunny waste of 90 minutes. If you've ever watched a comedian struggle mightily to be funny and fail, you know the sort of discomfort I felt when watching these no-names flail on stage. It's telling that the only names of consequence--Stewart and Leary's cousin O'Brien--literally phoned it in. A typically awkward detail: the director cuts away to Keifer Sutherland reaction shots maybe a dozen times, like he's the President at the Lincoln Center Honors or something. It's utterly bizarre. Leary deserved better. I spent the whole time wishing I were watching him do standup--instead of watching him watch his inferiors. His brief closing remarks are amusing enough, but it's too little too late.

it may be true that dennis swipped his whole repitwar from Hicks however dinnis peformance kicks the arse off Hicks..... and surly thats what counts people have this fasination with hicks, thinking hes some kind of profit or god, and although he may have been one of the gratest stand ups ever..... his performances were at time somwhat lackluster (exsept for goat boy).... any way buy this DVD or ill find out where u live and kill your puppy..... Three cheres for leary and the rediculs views for which he stands!

First off.

Thank you for getting up and driving your self to become
a comic/actor. Thank you for writing "VooDoo Child" and
for years of laughter.

I have been searching for years for this DVD or even VHS.
Untill this year I try the hopeless search string and
much to my suprise, what do I find... Wow, it's finally
here. So I jump right in and purchase me a copy.

Can't wait to give this to my wife as a Valentines day
gift. Her and I originally saw it air on HBO and made a
copy of it. Well, the two moves we've had and countless
loaning out of VHS tapes, it disappeared along the way.

Finally it's commited to DVD and finally on the market.

This is my first impression of Eddie Griffin, the very
first thing my wife and I have seen of his and has
watched him grow from it. And to this day, my wife and
I still spit out some of the lines from this show on
occation and quietly giggles about "Laylay's leg".

His resent success has landed him on:
"Men of the square table", I believe a series of
SuperBowl Ads. Funny as L.

We will continue to watch Eddie Griffin grow into
quite a successfull actor like Will Smith, Jamie Foxx,
Tom Cruze & Brad Pitt.

This is a good show to purchase, sit down with the
wife and prepare to crack up. I strongely advise this
to any couple looking for that special box with the
best laughs inside. (Disclaimer):Not for the kiddies!

Eddie is a terrific comedian on his day. I don't know why he brought out this drivel (by his standards). Some might enjoy it and I can see how they might. For me however, he did too many weak jokes that I have heard before ad nauseum. He cusses way too much and for no reason at all. Don't get me wrong, I am no prude, and yes, I do enjoy cussing, but I like it to be done in context. Eddie cusses for the sake of it, without being funny. I find it a tad disappointing because he truly is among the top 10 comedians working today.
His other work is far superior to this.

i 1st recall seeing this live on HBO back in my college days! i so awaited the release f this title on DVD! It is the best mix of stand up and racial humor ever! Eddiee is amazing! i enjoyed this more so than the other recent stuff he has been doing. Get this if u wana crack up laughing!

I'm going to have to disagree with the above review. He has a point but he's all mixed up. if you have seen dysfunctional family and all his other stand up then those will be boring because this was his first big special. I remember watching this is 1997 when it first came out and it is still to this day the performance that is still the funniest that i have ever seen.

Henry Daniels,who played numerous villians during his long career,among which was the nefarious Professor Moriarity against Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes in this film plays the creepy Dr.Zurich,an undead scientist attempting to fulfill a 100 plus year old curse against the Drake family...Don't get me wrong,this film does have a few plotline holes,and as compared with today's horror films it is rather tame,but it also has it's creepy elements,which alone should be enough to warrant your interest...

I always loved horror since I was 8 years old. I saw this movie on TV back in the 50's when it was released and growing up I never saw it again. So when it was out in DVD well you know the rest!

As much as I love Boris Karloff, VOODOO ISLAND is a complete dog-log of a movie! Boris plays a TV host who debunks all things supernatural. He's hired by a zillionaire hotel magnate to go to an island and find out what happened to four men who went there. Only one of them returned, and he's zombified! So, Boris and five others set out for VOODOO ISLAND in the south pacific (!). Sounds like a terrific set-up right? Forget it! Our adventurers spend fully half of the movie's running time just trying to get to the island! Along the way, they meet a young Adam "Batman" West as a radio operator. Finally, they arrive on the island, where they spend loads of time talking and wandering around. A few man-eating plants attack, including some aquatic flora that reminded me of the ridiculous monsters in ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES. Nope, Boris can't save this one! One cool scene shows a little girl being eaten by a plant monster. Alas, this is the only such scene. THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE is actually pretty good. The Drake family men have been dying at age 60 ever since an ancestor slaughtered a tribe in south america. Jonathan's brother has just died, winding up as a headless corpse! Now Jonathan knows he is next on the list. Enter Dr. Zurich (Henry "The Body Snatcher" Daniell) as the local anthropologist / voodoo witchdoctor, bent on shrinking Jonathon's head down to the size of grapefruit! His head-hunting servant is a highlight, with his mouth sewn shut and shoes made of human skin! FOUR SKULLS is a frightful fiesta for the fear freak! It is worth the price of this double feature...

The Power Of Voodoo.......2005-10-01

Who will escape from Voodoo Island? If the maneating plants don't kill them first, the boredom will. Yes, Voodoo Island is rather dull. I certainly don't set my standards too high when dealing with old B pictures, but a B film director has accomplished something rather rare when he makes a schlock picture that's not even mildly amusing. The film has a pretty short running time, and our cast doesn't even get to the island till about 40-45 minutes through the film. Alot of dilly-dallying up to that point. Karloff gives a good performance as a skeptic who likes to debunk superstitious theories, but he really can't even save this film. The natives on this island are about as threatening as the three stooges, and you don't see hardly enough of the maneating plants which are the only interesting thing in the film. It's very anticlimatic as well. Don't read any further if you honestly want to keep the ending of Voodoo Island a surprise. The civilization on this island purposely turned it's back on the rest of the world and wants to keep the island and it's people a secret. Is there a big showdown between Karloff and the chief? No. Karloff says, "Don't worry, we won't tell anyone" and the chief says, "Oh, alright, you can all go". That's the end to the terror and menace of Voodoo Island.
The Four Skins Of Jonathan Drake is naturally the better film of the two. It concerns a curse killing off the men of the Drake family, and the last man, Jonathan's attempts to stop it. The witchdoctor(a native Indian's body with a white man's head) and his assistant(a guy who looks like he tried to swallow a sneaker and has the laces hanging out of his mouth) try to get their hands on the slippery Jonathan Drake. Lots of cool shrunken heads in this one. A decent film, that's where the three stars go. I don't know if it's just my dvd, but there were a few glitches on the Voodoo Island side of the disc. Lots of skipping, as though you hit the FF button on your remote at the lowest setting. Maybe I just got ahold of a bad copy, but there are no scratches on the disc. Buy with caution.

Definitely one of the best from David DeCoteau. From the beginning I knew I would enjoy this film. Opening credits are nice with each actor featured with his name, nice. All nice looking too. This very B grade horror film left alot to be desired. Aside from one blasemophous scene where the demon priest sucks on a crusifix to suggest oral sex, and a young man who has ripped open his shirt to carees his pecks sucks his crusifix, there wasnt much to make this unrated. If your expecting to see frontal or rear nudity, forget it! The nearest thing is teenage guys running around in tight calvin Klein undies. However, if your someone who likes to use your imagination, this might be for you. One good thing about this flick is a pre Charmed hottie Drew Fuller rubbing himself all over in his undies. If your a big Drew fan like me, it might be worth buying, utherwise go buy a playgirl.

If you like to watch a movie listening to the commentary by the director then you will enjoy... A low budget movie but David DeCoteau gives an intellagent scene by scene commentary on the actors and film type etc etc....

A boy has a college interview at a small academy and meets the other guys there. And they talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk. They go to classes and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk. Then they go down to dinner and and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk. Then nighttime comes and the boys all feel themselves up. In other words, this movie is vintage DeCoteau. It defies all known logic (the boy shows up for his college interview, is accepted immediately and somehow moves in the same day with no luggage or discussion with parents), has lame effects and lots of half naked boys. It's hard to tell if this is a commentary on the Catholic Church scandals or just another excuse to show writhing youg men in bed. Definitely another laugh riot from the director of such "classics" as Leeches and Leather Jacket Love Story.

This movie was extreamly stupid, but very funny. We just laughed though this hole movie. This was pretty much very soft porn. The hole time all the guys did was rub themselves or the priest rubbed them. The special effects sucked, they were probably better in the old bewitched episodes (the black and white ones!!). The acting was very bad, and this movie is very anticrist.

First of all, Kevin Vanhook's Voodoo Moon is a B movie. It is not meant to be great cinema. If you take it at that level its not really a bad film.

Starring Eric Mabius and Charisma Carpenter as brother and sister, Cole and Heather, the last two survivors of a demonic massacre on their home town, the film attempts to portray the ultimate battle between good and evil. With that being said the film is like all good vs. evil battles except on a slightly to much lower budget. Vanhook is a hands on film maker and he has performed the task of writing, producing, editing and directing the film.

The story while it has some plot holes is not really that bad. The concept is pretty good even if the execution is flawed by the lack of budget. The supporting cast is solid also. We have both John Amos and Dee Wallace in decent form. Less strong performances are given by Jeff Combes and Jayne Heitmayer as part of Cole's team of zombie slayers.

Religion is used effectively in the film and the key battle is more out of the Exorcist than a film like Blade. The zombies are simply there for the gore factor. The film plays more like Shaun of the Dead than Dawn of the Dead, even though both may be counted as sources of inspiration.

With a higher budget this one could have been a contender instead of o straight to video release. The DVD includes two featurettes on the making of the film, three deleted and extended scenes, a photo gallery and a commentary by writer, producer, editor, director Vanhooks.

Rent it for an evening of lite horror fun.

Too many unanswered questions..........2007-01-07

Having just spent the last 90 something minutes of my life watching Voodoo Moon, I have too many unanswered questions. The first and most important is "Did the movie creators loose interest or run out of budget?" This is very much an unfinished work, a diamond in the rough that was never honed.

After the first hour, I was ready to give Voodoo Moon a 4 or 5 star rating. The characters have potential, the plot was intricately woven, everyone had a role to play in this great fight against good and evil, and there were a hundred small subplot just waiting to be resolved. The villain even alluded to `making' the hero twenty years ago. Cool! How did that happen I wondered eagerly. I was almost bouncing up and down in my seat when I heard about a really cool underwater ghost town. YAY! This was going to be fun!

Then....

Nothing. No subplots were tied up. The main plot isn't resolved. It isn't like they tie up a few loose ends then prepare you for a sequel- that's not the feeling that you get here. No ones powers were explained, the big, build up fight took ten seconds, and the main `boss' villain was defeated in a silly, too easy way.

If the movie had been developed more, polished more, it would have been great. As it is now, watch it only if you want to have some cool character ideas to play around with in your mind, because nothing will be fixed on screen.

Bottom line, I can't recommend it in good conscience.

Actually not half bad.......2006-12-24

Lately, there's been a lot of direct to DVD horror movies released by Anchor Bay (It Waits, Room 6, Demon Hunter); just about all of which have been nothing worth seeing. I expected the same from Voodoo Moon, but surprisingly it's not a total crud-fest like I had expected it to be. Eric Mabius (Resident Evil) and Buffy and Angel's Charisma Carpenter star as siblings with tragic pasts, that soon find themselves holed up with a few other people as demonic forces threathen them. Predictable to the extreme, Voodoo Moon is surprisingly enjoyable for what it is, with Mabius being a surprisingly decent hero, and Carpenter looking as beautiful as ever, though her comedic talents which Buffy and Angel fans know by heart, don't get to be put on display. The action scenes are mostly decent, and the rest of the cast, including Re-Animator icon Jeffrey Combs and the Howling's Dee Wallace, are good as well. All in all, if you're looking for an enjoyable B-movie romp that doesn't take itself super seriously, check out Voodoo Moon.

A little voodoo to satisfy your appetite........2006-12-03

After viewing this little gem I can honestly say I don't care what other reviewers have to say. It's that good. High protein horror trip that provides some terrific fun in the old battle of Good vs. Evil.
One has to be a bit skeptical with a production that is written, directed, and edited by the same person. That person, in this case, is Kevin VanHook, who has done a commendable job of storytelling without getting his audience wrapped up in annoying theatrics. No bobbling cameras, filtered color, or gore for gore's sake. Straight forward action with some excellent special effects; so well done and very effective.
A truly professional cast with John Amos almost stealing the show.
Now for the best part. The ending. NO SPOILERS HERE. But what a great piece of cinematic genius. You'll sit back and say...wait a minute...oh my God...that's cool...real cool.
Viewing "VOODOO MOON" will cast a spell on you.
You'll want to see it again.

VOODOO LUNACY.......2006-10-19

Derivative and disjointed, VOODOO MOON nonetheless manages to be an entertaining little horror movie, with good performances and production values.
A demon has wiped out an entire village, resulting in its being flooded to make a lake for a new water supply. Two of its survivors, Corey and Heather, are gifted with varying psychic powers. He's like an exorcist and she can draw pictures that foretell the future. Corey has dedicated his life to fighting this nasty demon but now has one final showdown in which he enlists the help of people he has saved from this demon in the past. He also convinces his sister to join in his quest. It's all been done before and it's reminiscent of the tv series SUPERNATURAL and even the PROPHECY movie franchise. Eric Mabius is a buffed up, stolid hero; BUFFY'S Charisma Carpenter is his sister; Rik Craig is the demonic Daniel; the ageless John Amos looking pretty fit for a man in his sixties plays a biker; the ubiquitous Jeffrey Combs is the zombie-like cop; and Dee Wallace shows up as some kind of healer whom Corey rescued.
It's all pretty hokey but it's tale of good vs. evil is given some refreshing life.

The oddly titled Don't Torture a Duckling (taken from a minor plot point) is one of director Lucio Fulci's most linear and conventional narratives, relying more on story and mystery than on gore and atmospherics. In a rural Italian village, young boys turn up dead, and the authorities are stumped as to who the murderer is. A reporter lends his efforts to the hunt for the killer, many red herrings turn up, and more kids are murdered while the police search for the culprit. A sexually liberated young woman from Milan, a local witch, and the village idiot all fall under suspicion until the killer is uncovered. Gone is much of the director's trademark visual style, replaced with the blinding sunlight of an Italian summer for a hyperrealistic feel (though Fulci's affinity for the zoom shot and deep focus comes through). More tellingly, though, Fulci points toward the superstition and ignorance of the villagers as being as dangerous and destructive as the murderer himself. Also, the film's vehemently anti-Catholic sentiment had to have been controversial at the time of its release. Giallo rules!.......2007-07-14

Another great classic from the master of extreme horror. This giallo tale is about a mad-man(or woman)roaming the Italian countryside murdering little boys. It is not by any means his goriest or most f****d up but for the time the child murders and anti-catholic message were unheard of. There are a couple of cool special effects scenes and it is not completely devoid of gore, especially one scene that is reminiscent of "The Beyond" (the cliff scene is cool too) and can definitely see the start of a gory career for the maestro. The other great thing about this movie is the music is done by Riz Ortilani, the same man who made the excellent music for "Cannibal Holocaust". If your a giallo fan or a Fulci fan this is a must have. FULCI LIVES!

Fulci's Masterpiece.......2007-06-14

Italian director Lucio Fulci is rarely given the credit he deserves. Fulci was a director of great utility, who traversed generic boundaries regularly before he became firmly associated with the horror genre. His final gory step into the horror genre with "Zombi 2" was as much the result of economic imperatives and producer influence as it was a conscious decision on Fulci's part. These films were marked by an ambivalence towards conventional narrative patterns, which makes his 1972 effort "Don't Torture a Duckling" all the more exceptional. This film is as tightly plotted and efficiently constructed as any giallo film, but with its undertones of peasant superstition, the supernatural and witchcraft, places it firmly within the thematic universe of the director. This is giallo Fulci style and the concessions he makes to the conventions of this form are purely within the remit of iconography. This is a giallo marked by a particularly unsettling atmosphere of hypocrisy and perversion (one only need look toward a truly shocking scene in which a young boy of 12 is prick teased by a naked Barbara Bouchet). This is further augmented into the white washed walls of this rural northern Italian city, and its superstitious villagers, who aren't above a bit of chain whipping vigilante action. Fulci invests a great deal more in the procedures of the police, but ultimately the resolution is arrived at by amateur detectives, who represent both modernity and bourgeois society. The murders of innocent children, intriguingly, are not due to perverse motives, but instead an idealistic religious conviction which sees the modern world as a haven of vices which can only corrupt the innocence of youth. Fulci shows the negative side of both modern Italy and its rural counterpart. By showing that both are marked by ignorance and arrogance, Fulci seems to offer a particularly nihilistic vision of mankind.

This DVD re-issue by Blue Underground is excellent value for money. The picture quality is very good for a film that has been mishandled and distributed badly for decades. This is a must buy for anyone interested in European horror, not only is it an exemplary giallo, but also Fulci's most rounded cohesive and enjoyable pictures.

Great giallo..........2007-04-18

...this is unlike any other film by Fulci, other than Lizard in a Woman's Skin. It is about a serial killer who murders little kids. The townspeople become paranoid and police seek out the killer. Interesting story, and twist in the end. You think you know who the killer is, but you don't! Great movie. Excellent setting and pace. A must for your Giallo or Italian horror collection.

So you think Fulci is just a gore director?.......2007-04-02

Starting in 1979 with the release of Zombie, Lucio Fulci became known for gore movies. That continued through the 80s with a string of gore flicks, which include The Beyond and City of the Living Dead among others.

Don't Torture a Duckling isn't your typical Lucio Fulci film at all. There are pretty much no gore scenes, though there are two scenes where Fulci delivers some gore, but I'll touch upon that later on.

Don't Torture a Duckling as I stated before is very different then what Fulci did in the late 70s and 80s. If you're looking for gore you will not find much at all. Actually about half the murders take place off camera.

The plot is rather dark; pre-teens being killed is quite disturbing. Gore and violence is not needed when dealing with that subject matter. We also have a woman in her 20s that seems to have a weird sexual attraction to young boys.

It's really a strange movie and like I said unlike most of Fulci's other movies. While yes, Don't Torture a Duckling can be slow in some spots, and my biggest complaint is the sense of dread isn't quite there.

Here, Fulci at times creates some great tension and atmosphere and other times it just doesn't work. Oddly enough I found Fulci's gore movies to have more tension at times.

But with that said this is still an excellent movie and Lucio Fulci proves he is more then just a gore director. While some scenes I felt lacked tension others had overall Fulci nailed it.

While watching the movie I did enjoy it, but it was afterwards when I thought back I realized how good the movie actually was. There are several things while not directly brought up are hinted at, from sexual repression to pedophilia.

With all that hinted at and all going on in the movie it really does add to the movie and it shows what a talented filmmaker Lucio Fulci was.

While I won't spoil who the killer is their motive was really creepy and they didn't do simply because they are psychotic, which yeah sure the killer is, but the motive was downright creepy.

As for the gore; one woman is whipped with chains and while not overly gory like in Fulci's later movies the gore was decent and the scene was really disturbing and with the music playing in the back-round it was even more disturbing.

The last death in the movie is also a bit gory, but it's quite clear a dummy was used, but hey it still works well.

If you are a fan of Giallos I would very much recommend Don't Torture a Duckling. And for those who think Fulci is just a gore director should really check this out.

In closing, Don't Torture a Duckling isn't a perfect movie; it can at times be a bit slow and some scenes lack the tension they should have had, but overall Lucio Fulci delivers an excellent film and one of my favorite Giallos.

Co-star Barbara Bouchet has to rate as one of the most beautiful women to ever grace cinema.

Argento he's NOT!.......2005-08-26

Don't get me wrong I love Fulci movies, but I love them for the same reason most other people love them (the gore quotient). Fulci can always be depended upon to splatter tons of blood, guts and gore all over the screen and perhaps this is his way of covering up the fact that he's not the best director. I'd never go into a Fulci movie expecting a deep plot or oscar worthy acting.

With that said I did go into this movie expecting more. Maybe I expected too much and therefore I was very disappointed. Fulci's effort here falls short of suspense, character and atmosphere. Argento's "Bird With The Crystal Plumage" blows this film out of the water. Argento's "Bird" is intelligent, suspenseful and moves at a good pace. "Don't Torture a Duckling" fails to deliver any of the above. The reveiwer above states the movie is up there with Argento's "Deep Red" and that statement is as laughable as the way he spelled Fulci(Fulce).

I'm not taking anything away from Fulci. Like I said I love the movies he'd make 7 to 12 years later like "Zombie" "New York Ripper" "The Beyond" and "City of The Living Dead". All movies made between 1979 and 1983 as opposed to this one made in 1972. Fulci is known as The Godfather of Gore not the Godfather of Giallo. For good Giallo films check out any Argento film from the 1970's or Mario Bava's "Bay of Blood" (1972).

Roger Moore was introduced as James Bond in this 1973 action movie featuring secret agent 007. More self-consciously suave and formal than predecessor Sean Connery, he immediately reestablished Bond as an uncomplicated and wooden fellow for the feel-good '70s. This film also marks a deviation from the more character-driven stories of the Connery years, a deliberate shift to plastic action (multiple chases, bravura stunts) that made the franchise more of a comic book or machine. If that's not depressing enough, there's even a good British director on board, Guy Hamilton (Force 10 from Navarone). Live And Let Die was very odd. The Voodoo meets drugs plot was kinda stupid. Some of the action scenes were good. Some were down right cheesy. This is one of Moore's weaker Bond films. Id rather see Bond try and save the word, not fight Voodoo warriors. This reminded me of the so-so Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom a little. Such a departure of what made the seried great. And it does not go the series justice. Better than the extrememly lame Moonraker. But well below The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only ans a couple others Roger Moore stared in.

Moore's First Bond Outing, and The Decks Are In His Favor!.......2007-04-01

Out goes Connery, in comes Moore, Roger Moore as James Bond. The first Brit to play the British super agent. Roger Moore makes a suave and confident debut, as Bond chases after some devious drug dealers and Solitaire. Like Diamonds are Forever, this one delves into the 70's silliness factor, but totally delivers with better staged action sequences, especially THE prototypical motor boat chase (awesome stuntwork in this one!). Jane Seymour makes a lovely addition as Miss Solitaire. Yaphet Kotto makes for a smooth and menacing dual role as Kananga and Mr. Big. The late Julius Harris is totally "disarming" as towering henchman Tee Hee. Geoffrey Holder (The Un-Cola Guy) has the time of his life as undead henchman Baron Samedi. Clifton James is funny and more tolerable here as redneck Sheriff J. W. Pepper, than his reprisal in The Man With the Golden Gun. David Hedison is the best yet cast as Bond's CIA pal Felix Leiter. The hit theme song, superbly performed by Paul McCartney and Wings, totally ROCKS! Love that magnetic/buzz saw watch, man!

Bond's Transition: Moore Delivers Plastic Action & Humor, But We've Seen Better.......2007-03-24

Given the success and rage of blaxploitation films in the early 1970s, the producers decided to jump on the bandwagon in order to take the series in a new direction with LIVE AND LET DIE. It is, in many ways, a shocking film in how far away from the original mold it takes the series. This is particularly strange given that Guy Hamilton (who churned out GOLDFINGER, one of the best Bond films). For starters, we have a new Bond in the form of Roger Moore. He has his detractors and his supporters, splitting roughly along the divide of what people want out of the films: suspense & espionage or fantastic action & humor. If you love the latter, Roger Moore delivers in spades, his tongue firmly set in his cheek and an army of one-liners at the ready. LIVE AND LET DIE focuses on action and humor, Bond having become a sort of ridiculous character by now. For my tastes, Connery had the ability to hold the series just above the ridiculous, whereas by Bond's eighth outing, he is drowning in it. Additionally, the film has a decidedly blaxploitationist theme. Bond is now dealing with a black heroine supplier, surrounded by an army of jive-talking black henchmen, complete with pimp suits, "pimpmobiles," and Shaft attitude. Perhaps some will enjoy this lively romp through 1970s culture. Others might even congratulate the producers for being so timely and capitalizing on the trend. But it horribly dates the film, while at the same time making LIVE AND LET DIE look cheap and cheesy.

After the opening "gun barrel" sequence (now, of course, featuring Roger Moore), we are immediately taken to the United Nations, where we witness the interesting assassination of a British representative. We quickly cut to a New Orleans funeral march and again witness the assassination of another agent. Finally, we are taken to an island called San Monique and witness the voodoo killing of a third man, tied to a stake. It is a short opening teaser and Bond is notably absent. The opening titles follow in the voodoo theme, featuring a skull in flames and the bodies of black women with painted designs. McCartney's theme is fantastic and is definitely one of the stronger songs in the entire series.

The plot of LIVE AND LET DIE is rather down-to-earth, but with certain elements blown out of proportion to render the film an over-the-top feel. Several British agents have been killed (in the opening teaser) who were monitoring the operations of a certain Dr. Kananga (Yaphet Kotto), the dictator of a small Caribbean island called San Monique. Bond travels to New York, the site of the first assassination, where Kananga is visiting the UN. Upon arrival, Bond once again meets up with Felix Leiter of the CIA. (Interestingly, in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, Leiter is noticeably not fond of Bond and is exasperated by his antics. But here, there is no such animosity. They are best of friends again). Bond soon finds himself in the clutches of Mr. Big, a man known as Kananga's US gangster connection, who runs a chain of "Fillet of Soul" restaurants throughout the country. It is here that Bond first meets his girl Solitaire (Jane Seymour), a beautiful tarot reader who has the ability to predict the future. It is Solitaire's ability that has enabled Mr. Big and Kananga to stay one step ahead of Bond's operations. Bond manages to escape and travels to San Monique to track down Kananga. He seduces Solitaire (in addition to his contact Rosie Carver (Gloria Hendry)) and finally figures out Kananga's plans. Kananga has produced two tons of heroine on his secret plantation, guarded against invasion by secret nets and the islanders' fear of voodoo and the occult (reminiscent of the islander's fear of Dr. No's "dragon" in DR. NO). Kananga plans to distribute the heroine in the United States for free, both flooding the market to put his competitors out of business while at the same time doubling the number of addicts in the country. With the mob out of the way, Kananga will be able to run the heroine business in the US for many years to come. That is, of course, unless Bond can foil his plans!

LIVE AND LET DIE is notable for the down-to-earth nature of its evil villain. Neither Blofeld or SPECTRE is anywhere to be seen. We no longer have an evil supervillain capable of crushing the world in a single blow. Instead, we have a drug-trafficker who wants to rule the market. Of course, he is a drug trafficker who has an incredibly elaborate hideout and an incredibly elaborate operation. (Though, why it is so elaborate is never really understood, other than the need for Bond to fight a villain of some size, power, and eccentricity.) Another feature of LIVE AND LET DIE that pops out is the explicit attempt to make Roger Moore's Bond different from Sean Connery's. Bond never orders a martini throughout the entire film (he prefers bourbon with no ice). The mission briefing occurs in Bond's private residence and Q makes no appearance whatsoever (although, he is referred to in reference to Bond's electromagnetic watch). Finally, Bond no longer has his cigarette case, choosing to smoke cigars instead. It is all a bit jarring.

Another funny aspect of the film occurs during the terrific boat chase sequence. The sequence is really quite spectacular and is certainly worthy of a Bond film. But for some strange reason, the producers decided to insert Sherriff J.W. Pepper (Clifton James), a stereotypical dim-witted Southern sheriff who seems to be the inspiration for Sheriff Buford T. Justice of SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT fame. In fact, I felt like I was in a prequel to the BANDIT series during this whole escapade, in which this ignorant Southern sheriff attempts to catch Bond in a high-speed chase, only to be foiled by various wrecks and problems (supposedly to the audience's delight). It's clearly meant to be a bit of comic relief, I suppose, but it falls flat. Just like Kananga's henchman Tee Hee (Julius Harris) falls flat with his ridiculous looking metal pincer hook. Just as Kananga's shark pool (why does he have sharks?) and the "explosive" ending falls flat.

Roger Moore ushered in a new era for Bond films. The action in LIVE AND LET DIE is, on the whole, quite good. The stunts are great and the pursuit sequences are particularly fun. But Bond is a bit light for my tastes here. I preferred the Bond films when they took themselves more seriously and tried to create suspense. This is escapist entertainment. Thus, if you enjoyed the Roger Moore era, you will enjoy LIVE AND LET DIE. The Ultimate Edition looks much fantastic and the sound is great. Included are a number of documentaries about the making of the film, as well as various footage of Moore on the set. It all comes down to what you want from Bond. There is no way to achieve perfect continuity throughout a film series that spans decades and involves several different actors in the lead role. If you enjoyed the class of the Connery films, you will probably not like the change evidenced here. But if you're willing to accept a light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek Bond, Roger Moore certainly delivers. I prefer Connery. But to each his own.

Odd Bond.......2007-02-24

This probably the oddest Bond film of the whole series. Of course one has to take intoacoount that it was made in the early 70's and it portrays a feeling of the period but still the producers tried to make Moore different in every aspect from Connery. I am not a fun of Roger Moore but this film is quite interesting as it is the closest that the series has ever come into becoming a cult film. An extra bonus are the scenes shot in the grand old south that are quite interesting.

James Farentino stars as a small-town sheriff who discovers that the victims in a string of grisly murders are reappearing seemingly alive and unharmed. His investigation leads him to suspect that the local mortician (Jack Albertson) is somehow responsible for these reanimated corpses; what Farentino doesn't know is the extent to which the entire town-himself included-is involved. First-time viewers will appreciate director Gary Sherman's attention to pacing and atmosphere, as well as the often darkly humorous script by co-producer Ronald Shusett and Dan O'Bannon (Alien, Total Recall) and the solid cast (which includes future horror star Robert Englund); longtime fans will appreciate the fact that Blue Underground's uncut print restores many of Stan Winston's gruesome special effects. --Paul Gaita

Excellent!.......2007-05-15

This is a highly underrated horror classic with great special effects and great story from writer of alien Dan O'Bannon. It kind of reminds me of a cross between "The Wicker man" and "The fog" with good gore scenes. If you like horror with a sci-fi feel this is a good buy.

Cult directors hidden favorite.......2007-02-13

Dan O' Bannon who wrote Aliens wrote this. Stan Winston in his early years as special effects make-up artist worked on it. "Se7en" steals from it. "The 6th Sense" owes everything to it. It has a critically acclaimed eye and needle scene. Lots of brutally gory death scenes for its time. You can easily mistake it for a John Carpenter classic. Not the best production values in the world but when something this low budget is generating the twists and thrills 30 years before the modern horror guru pretended that no one would ever see this one again (isn't DVD great?) it can not be underrated. Cult has an impact.

Exhumed at last!.......2007-02-05

Great to see the full uncut version of this cult classic horror available at last! Dead and Buried is very creepy little horror, punctuated with a few inspired make-you-jump and make-you-wince moments. Whilst not perhaps as explicit as horror flicks that melt the gorehounds' butter today, Dead and Buried builds at a measured pace, to a clever and shocking conclusion that is sure to make you want to watch the movie again to check for clues you may have missed.

This two-disk edition spoils the viewer for extras, with commentaries, trailers, stills and biogs galore. The sleeve notes also give a fascinating insight into the problems that beset this film and the tortuous path it took to result in this DVD release. Only slight downside is that the picture quality of the main feature is not great - looking like a straight port-over from VHS and the so-called 5.1/DTS sound may be pushing something out through all 6 speakers, but it gets a bit mushy at times and some dialogue is difficult to follow. No matter though, Dead and Buried is certainly something of a minor classic and deserves to be in every horror buff's collection.

Wow....another old-time horror gem.......2006-09-21

Very pleasantly surprised with this gem. Kind of reminds me of a cross between "The Fog" and other movies whereby a group or town is like a cult pursuing their own little game.....well acted...well paced....great scenery...excellent screenplay...great topic...well cast...very little to complain about...the only problem I found with it at all, and it is so minor, and it's only this one thing, is how fake the doctor's head looked when he snorted acid...lol....other than that the movie is an A+ all the way through.....keeps you surprised throughout...never predictable....very original and a brand new take on zombies, which are an evil group I never much cared for to begin with. No longer the slow methodical harmless type zombies of the past. What makes these so deadly is that they never appear to be zombies at all. Also look for small bit parts from Robert Englund and Michael Pataki and a great performance from Jack Albertson in his last role. Great job by the people in charge. Well done! Thank you.

i first saw this grim little shocker on cable in the 80's and thought it was great. this 2 disc set is very much worth the price and has a wealth of extras.
potter's bluff is a small town with a problem,people keep getting killed in very bad ways,only later to show up as townfolk.sheriff dan gillis is at a lose to explain this and the more he digs the less he likes this little problem.
the transfer is great and this little shocker will keep you guessing til the very end(and what an end)!! so if you like your horror movies that are a little out of the normal you'll like this one
