4 out of 5 stars Need time to let it sink in.......2007-09-17

My initial reaction to this movie was give it 2 stars just for finishing it. Then I thought, "Hey, this is based on the game. Did it deliver what you expected?" And there, it got me. There is no attempt here to make a great movie. This is a way to divert yourself for roughly an hour and a half. If you give it the benefit of the doubt, you can say the plot is pretty thin. Practically non-existent in fact, but then have you ever played the DOA game? I own one of them. In fact, I only own one video game and it's DOA Hardcore. My favorite character is Lei Fang so I was kind of disapointed with her lack of screen time in this movie, but they didn't ask me so I settle for what I get. Anyway, enough meandering and back to the movie. Not great by any stretch of the imagination, but it pretty much delivers on what one would expect from a movie based on the DOA characters. Lots of pretty spectacular unbelievable fighting, and a lot of cute ladies in cool outfits. Kasumi and her fighting coustume were disapointments, Ayane I liked, Helena was --well, different, Tina was better than I expected, and Christie was far better than I anticipated. And Weatherbee: How could you not love Weatherbee? While the male fighters in this film were pretty much in it just to play the roles of punching bags for the girls, they seemed to have fun with their parts and were good sports about playing under
achieving characters. I give this film 4 stars for presenting an hour and a half of what you would pretty much expect but no more. I could have been better but it also could have been much worse. If you are a fan of any of the games you should at least be able to say you saw it.

5 out of 5 stars You have to love it.......2007-09-16

You have to admire a movie that admits what it is and who it is for. Not a lot of movies out there do that. This is, as another reviewer points out, a true guilty pleasure. The fight scenes are amazing, beautifully done, and leave you breathless. And yes, the women are attractive, but would you expect anything else from a movie based upon a video game? I have to admit, I dont really play fight games. I tend to enjoy the rpgs. Still, this is a great movie when you want only to have your brain numbed after a long week of work. The acting isn't too bad and the characters are wonderful to watch. I really give this movie a high review because it admits what it is and what it is for. Watch it.

5 out of 5 stars It's so bad,it is wonderful........2007-09-15

Before watching this movie, check your brain at the door.

This movie is the best bad movie I have seen in years. It doesn't pretend to be anything other than a bad action movie, and in it's own right it sucks and rocks all at the same time.

If you love a good "bad" action movie, this flick is all about it!

3 out of 5 stars The best thing about the movie is the trailer........2007-09-14

This movie is more like a two part "She Spies". Mechanically done fight sequences, cheesy computer graphics (well, at least the computerized video scoring screens are a new idea for a karate movie), and loads of cute girls to stare at are worth the cost of renting the DVD. Tura Satana--where are you when we need you?

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars.......2007-09-13

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this film. After reading about all the delays, horrid reviews, and the whole week it played in my local theatre, I had to convince myself to rent it. Now I have to convince myself not to buy it.

If you like movies in the vein of "Mortal Kombat", then this is for you. Minimal plot to keep you busy through the fight scenes, but the plot actually makes sense. The fight scenes are very well-choreographed. But I expect no less from Corey Yuen, who is simply brilliant. The acting was what it was. Devon Aoki came through better than she did in "War"; Jamie Pressly was a lot of fun as Tina; Holly Valance did a nice job as Christie, and Sarah Carter was a good Helena. Natasse Malthe was a bit under-used, and that did disappoint me; the ads and interviews would have you believe she was a main character.

And that really was the problem with this movie, the PR. The big scene everyone talked about with the five girls taking on 300 warriors? Nope, not the film at all. It was hyped the wrong way. Oh, and it was a bit too short at 87 minutes or so.

As for the DVD, the features are somewhat sparse. About 10 deleted scenes which shouldn't have been deleted, and a 20 minute "making of" sequence. That's it. For $25 I expect a bit more.

If you're looking for a good flick to kill some time, go for it. The next "Enter the Dragon" it isn't, but it is well-above the disasters which were "Bloodrayne", "House of 100 Corpses" and other video-game flicks done by Uwe Boll.

Ethan Hawke, fresh faced and full of determination, tackles the icy wilds and rowdy boom towns of Alaska in Disney's 1991 adaptation of Jack London's turn-of-the-century gold rush classic. Though somewhat tamed for young audiences, the story of a city kid who befriends a feral half-wolf/half-dog orphan while learning to survive the dangers of nature and man has its share of peril and rousing scenes of wilderness adventure. But the humans are upstaged by both the animals (the standoff between White Fang and a wild brown bear is a highlight) and the Alaskan landscape, from the snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes of winter to the rich green forests and whitecap rivers of summer. The scenes of dogfights and wild wolves hunting game are carefully shot to avoid bloodshed (the opening disclaimer takes pains to remind viewers that all such scenes have been simulated), but they may still be too intense for young children. Recommended for 9 and up. --Sean Axmaker

2 out of 5 stars Good movie ---but nothing like the book.......2007-05-31

I had read White Fang with my 8th graders recently and thought it might be good to compare with the movie. WOAH! Who is Jack? Where was Weedon Scott? Gray Beaver is actually kind of a nice guy in this movie. It was a good adventure movie, but if you are expecting it to be like the book, think again. It WAS good to show the students that movies aren't always accurate to the book, and that was a good lesson to teach. I would have liked this production to be truer to the novel, but not a bad movie to enjoy with the family.

5 out of 5 stars White Fang.......2007-05-12

A very well orchastrated and touching sequel to that age old classic "Call of the Wild." I loved the book and the old movie, and this has proven to be a classic in the making to match it. The actors were believable and had you right in the midst of their struggles, clashes, and victories. Heart tugging and a tear jerker at times. It is definitely a keeper and well worth to add to ones library of films.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Surprise.......2007-04-29

I own this movie. First saw it on satellite because I love Jack London and the TIVO caught this because it is based on his novel. Even though it is different from the novel it captures the spirit of his story and as Ebert says, it is great entertainment in its own right. Anyone who loves canines is going to love this movie. Even some people I know who don't love canines, still loved the movie.

I liked it so much I bought the DVD. Excellent story, excellent soundtrack (the music is beautiful), excellent cinematography, excellent acting by both man and beast. Four stars because as like another previous reviewer, to release a movie as beautiful as this one in pan and scan instead of widescreen is a crime. Why Disney? This movie deserved widescreen. This movie is quality, maybe the best Disney live action movie, surely the best Disney live action movie I have ever seen. Good for repeated viewing at my house and well worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars White Fang.......2007-01-11

I was very pleased. Will order other movies.

Thanks,
Diana Myers

2 out of 5 stars What does this have to do with Jack London's book?.......2007-01-09

I love Jack London's books and have since childhood, so it's hard for me to understand why Disney would take a classic book title and make up a new story to go under it. I re-read WHITE FANG two months ago and there is precious little in this movie that was in the book. Jack London did not write kiddie books (nor did Anna Sewell, for that matter) and I understand how difficult it would be to adapt his works to the screen and get a family rating. Even so, people who read and loved the book and expect to see an adaptation of the original classic might well be terribly disappointed. If it's a good film and a good original script, then it should be allowed its own title and the Disney writers should get the credit for the story.

Description

Three Times is a Hou Hsiao masterpiece. A rapturous and beautiful love story set in three different eras, a pool hall in 1966, a 1911 brothel and present day Taipei. Stylistic and true to life of the times, Hou Hsiao Hsien brings to life the culture of each period as the tale unfolds. Critically acclaimed for its wisdom, cineamatic style and storytelling it is a must see for any true lover of cinema

4 out of 5 stars Three Times: A Century of Responses to Love .......2007-08-05

THREE TIMES (Zui hao de shi guang) is so frank a film that the viewer may get lost looking for the hidden meanings in this century traversal of lovers' interactions in China. Not one for simple linear filmmaking, director Hsiao-hsien Hou instead opts for mood and suggestion and leaves the paucity of dialog to make room for emotional involvement and response. Three periods - 1966 A Time for Love, 1911 A Time for Freedom, and 2005 A Time for Youth - are depicted with the same main characters, Qi Shu and Chen Chang, who prove to be exceptionally sensitive to the concept from the director: with each new tale these fine actors mold new characters and questions and yet allow us to see a line of similarity in the couples as the director has suggested.

The film wisely opens with the most successful of the three 'Times' - 1966 A Time for Love - - tracing the emergence of timid passion between a lad headed for the military and a young girl who works in a pool hall. They communicate by letters after their first brief introductory encounter and circumstances interfere with the progress of their relationship in 1966 Taiwan. The middle section 1911 A Time for Freedom is gorgeous visually and conceptually the director has elected to use the cinematic form of the period (silent movie) to tell his story about the freeing of a young girl from the grip of a brothel madam and surveys the political tensions between Japan and China as the quietly lighted story of love and yearning unfolds. The film ends with 2005 A Time for Youth and here our lovers are caught up in the pollution of smog, cellphones, emails, nightclubs, and infidelities for same sex affairs that speak loudly about the tenor of the times.

Hsiao-hsien Hou's films are an acquired taste and many will find the choppy editing, the fragmentary scenes that are not always well focused for the story line, and the over-long length (130 minutes) too much to endure. But the ideas are fresh and the characters and vignettes are memorable, and most of the major critics in the media have lavished praise on this film. It is an interesting work but for this viewer there are enough flaws to keep it grounded. Grady Harp, August 07

5 out of 5 stars Three Times.......2007-07-30

The brilliance of Hou's magnificently gorgeous meditation on love and longing, of course, is the conceit of using the same two actors in each sequence. And you couldn't ask for better performers than Chang and Shu, who are captivating regardless of the age they're portraying, particularly in the nostalgic, near-wordless "A Time for Love" segment, steeped in a sultry `60s atmosphere. Hou's other brilliant stroke is to make the next part, which unfolds in a brothel during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, a short silent film, with hypnotic music and title cards. Taken as a whole, "Three Times" is nothing short of a rapturous, romantic masterpiece--in triplicate.

4 out of 5 stars "Waiting Is the Hardest Part".......2007-06-20

Taking on love and history, three films from China's 'Three Times' come together showing how life is full of waiting and longing, unfulfilled wishes and the slow steps it takes to their realizations. The first film takes place in 1966; the second in 1911; and the last in 2005. Each focuses on a man and woman in love (Shu Qi and Chang Chen), with each scene showing the deliberate patience of its protagonists (and by the way, requiring it of the audience) waiting for fruition in political developments and love relationships waiting for consummation. Each film is framed with a woman singing a romantic song, depicting the sweet and sour of life.

In 'A Time for Love' (1966) May works at various pool halls, playing with male customers and maintaining the felt on the table. Patiently, she gets various letters from a boyfriend who frequented the pool hall, but is stationed in the Chinese army. When he returns he looks all over to find her. Beautiful romantic ballads and a version of Pachebel's 'Canon in D' serenade them. Their quiet moments together speak volumes.

Then, we're taken through 'A Time for Freedom' (1911) in a placid household filled with tranquil still lifes of a still-ancient Chinese setting. Piano music with oriental rhythms serenade each scene as the dialogue is revealed on the screen like a silent film. The soft development takes through meals and drinking tea with conversations about China's negotiations with Japan and a woman, Ah Mei's, consequential need for a dowry. The subject of the morality of keeping concubines is also discussed.

Next, 'A Time for Youth' fast-forwards to the present. Such a startling contrast to the last film, our lovers are on a motorcycle going through the modern roadways of Taipei. Although without all the waiting and ritual of the previous eras, our two lovers seem even less happy. They have all their freedoms and trappings of electronic gadgetry, but their lives gel less. The woman also has a girlfriend and keeps both her lovers on a short leash by her cell phone. She suffers crying spells, and the song she sings at the modern club is filled with anguished desperation.

Don't expect 'Three Times' to jump out at you. 'Three Times' is a beautifully shifting mood piece that works like a series of paintings. It is a fine composite of a hundred years of China's history framed by love stories and exquisitely shot backdrops that quietly ask us to wait for gratification just like our protagonists. Idyllic and moving, 'Three Times' is a gentle capsule of love and history throughout the century. Like our own 'Old Joy,' it placidly creates its revelations at a deliberate pace.

1 out of 5 stars Except for the first story, this one left us flat........2007-06-06

The first of the three stories in the movie is a very touching story, one anyone could enjoy. Unfortunately, the second two stories left both my wife and me completely flat. The second one is made like a silent movie, with a bit of acting, then the story in writing is shown, then back to the acting and so on. Neither of us could figure out what was supposed to be the romance in the last story. There are many better Chinese-language movies than this one.

5 out of 5 stars A disturbingly romantic picture painting.......2007-05-13

Three open episodes, three times a loving couple, and three times no happy ending. And yet ... The movie's one of the most beautiful I have seen so far. Three times a couple - or a man and a woman at the brink of becoming one - see their affectionate feelings for each other faced by the difficulties of their respective times - whether it is 1911, 1966, or 2005. Not only because of the different epoques is it nearly impossible for the movie to become boring. Because a thorough storytelling is waived, the film concentrates on creating pictures. And if you just concentrate on them, you can almost feel the desires dealt with here. I agree, this is not one of the easiest movies to watch, nonetheless I recommend: Get some chai for your beloved one and yourself and watch the episodes together by some candlelight.

"Something is going on here. Something I don't understand." So states the old lighthouse keeper on the remote, fog-shrouded island of Fang Rock in this haunting story from Doctor Who's 15th season. If you are a new visitor to the universe of this venerable British sci-fi series, no doubt you will share his sentiment.

But for this particular story, you need not know that Doctor Who is a Time Lord who travels the cosmos in a spacecraft called the TARDIS, an interplanetary time machine that looks like a police call box, or that Tom Baker, who portrays him here, is the fourth and perhaps most popular incarnation of the good Doctor.

Horror of Fang Rock is as much ghost story as science fiction. The TARDIS has deposited the vacation-bound Doctor and his companion, Leela, on Fang Rock ("You told me I would like Brighton," an unimpressed Leela remarks about the desolate surroundings), just after a strange light was witnessed plummeting from the sky into the sea. A mysterious fog envelopes the lighthouse, and one of its inhabitants is mysteriously killed. When a ship runs aground, its passengers take refuge in the lighthouse and find themselves stalked as well. Is it the mythical Beast of Fang Rock or, as the Doctor suspects, an alien menace?

The cheesy mid-1970s-vintage special effects are part of this show's charm. Like Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons, what Doctor Who lacks in production values, it more than makes up for in verbal ingenuity. "Are you in charge?" someone asks the Doctor. "No," he responds, "but I'm full of ideas." --Donald Liebenson

Description

The Doctor and Leela become top suspects in the mysterious deaths that occur when an eerie fog engulfs the Fang Rock lighthouse in this turn-of-the-century adventure.

5 out of 5 stars "I thought I'd locked the enemy out. Instead I've locked it in...with us!".......2007-04-14

A sudden, unnatural fog should be anybody's cue to run for their life; in the make-believe world of TV and film, anyway, it always precedes something wicked coming this way. Of course, this assumes somewhere to run to, and what makes "The Horror of Fang Rock" stand out among the many great episodes of "Doctor Who" that loosely translate the motifs and themes of horror into a science fiction idiom is its sheer claustrophobia. The helpless sense of being trapped at stiflingly close quarters with something murderous and frightful, utterly cut off from the outside world, unable to even see whatever it is that's picking folks off one by one--all of this successfully gives this storyline a very palpable sense of tension and dread. The tiny rooms and single winding stairwell of the lighthouse are horribly perfect in this regard. And memorable. These are images which stuck with me for years after I watched this show as a teen, and they still do the trick years later even if the alien villain, when finally revealed, looks a little funny and moves a little slowly by today's standards. The fact that he (she? it?) is a Rutan, whom we've heard of previously as the Sontarans' enemy but never actually seen before, is also a clever touch.

For all the horror movie motifs, too, the eeriest thing about this story may well be its moral neutrality. There are seven supporting characters altogether, three lighthouse crewmen and four stranded survivors from a ship that wrecked in the fog. Some of them are annoying or downright greedy and nasty, some are warm-hearted and generous and very likable, but all alike are targets of the Rutan's malice and meet an ugly fate regardless. Even some of the nicer characters I figured would make it through alive bit the dust, to my surprised dismay. I guess nothing's quite as horrifying as cold, stark realism. As for the main characters, "Fang Rock" comes along close to the midpoint of Tom Baker's time as the Doctor, and by now his take on this character is well-defined and fully developed while yet very fresh and energetic. His oddball eccentricity and air of moral authority are finely balanced, he's funny and serious all in good measure, and watching this makes it easy to see why the fourth Doctor is often cited as many people's favorite. And if you have a soft spot in your heart for the Doctor's traveling companion, Leela, this storyline really showcases her character in a great number of classic moments. Here she wields her knife as bravely as ever and gloats boisterously at the Rutan's demise, here she startles the early-20th-century sensibilities of the other characters while befuddled or aggravated by their civilized naivete, and most of all she displays a natural quick-witted intelligence that trumps any of the disadvantages of her neolithic education.

For that matter, excellent storytelling, fine acting, and good directing together all trump budgetary limitations any day, and in that regard "The Horror of Fang Rock" is a classic example of "Doctor Who" at its very finest. Thrills, chills, comedy, tragedy, science, superstition--all crammed together in one claustrophobic little package.

5 out of 5 stars Doctor Who meets the other side of the Sontauran War.......2007-04-01

A mysterious light house and atmospheric fog as in a good coastal tale. The Doc and Leela meet the Sontauran's arch nemisis(and superior in grade and intellect I belive) The Rutons! I've not seen this since it was broadcast on PBS but the Rutons, a highly evovled(though I don't see the physical imposing attributes the Sontaurans so gloriously boast about), maybe the toad-face jerks are just stupid and boast about blobs of green mucus but the Rutons seem far superior in intelligence and guile.-they also boast mental powers as "ghosts in a Lighthouse". Doc, bluntly alien that he is, freely admits "an alien from another planet is in this Lighthouse." to the salty dogs who can't even relate or fathom such incohernt nonsense as that! Aside the rediculous referrence(you don't tell a lout about something he has no point-of-ref to) the story is very atmospheric(as most of Tom's are) and poetically propped and dialogued. 5 out of 5 stars My favorite Dr. Who episode!.......2006-09-08

I've always remembered this episode from way back when, and jumped at the chance to get it on DVD! You just can't beat a head of lettuce wrapped in cellophane as a villain!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Doctor, Leela, and a Lighthouse.......2006-07-07

Like many others who have reviewed this disc, I remember the days of watching "Who" on my local PBS station. It was worth putting up with the yearly pledge drives to see all the episodes they could get.

"Horror of Fang Rock" ranks up there in the top ten for me. I'm not sure why the extras keep talking about how chopped together everything was. Sure, characters are introduced just to be killed off, but it's a freakin' Agatha Christie knock-off story. That's what she did!

Tom Baker was about half way through his take on The Doctor with this one, and the commentary track talks about how he was getting out of control. Louise Jamison, the lovely and talented actress who was Leela, gives us the lowdown on a scene where she says she came to her breaking point with Tom. After he entered a scene too early not once, not twice, but three times, she kept stopping the tape and saying, "That's not the way we rehearsed it." Finally, Tom entered at the right time and let Louise finish her lines. Afterwards, she went to apologize and Tom told her, "Think nothing of it. It's quite alright." She swears that single act and moment saved their working relationship.

Louise also remarks that the fans always site this, or "Talons" as their favorite Leela episodes. She was a great character never given a proper send off.

The other extras are quite cool. A doc on the BBC's first female director, a look at the writer of the episode, and some stills and storyboards round out the single disc.

The BBC Restoration Team does a great job with these. I can hardly wait to have all the surviving "Who" on dvd on my shelves.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun.......2006-06-29

Many Doctor Who stories in the Hinchcliffe/Holmes years (Hinchcliffe being the producer and Holmes the script editor) were loosely based on other films. The Seeds of Doom was based on Day of the Triffids, the Pyramids of Mars was based on the Hammer Horror films, and The Horror of Fang Rock is very obviously loosely based on Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. Here, however, it takes place in an isolated lighthouse, and the killer is an alien, and boy does it all come together well! This is one fun Doctor Who story! Its ambiance and mood are great fun, and the dialogue is stellar. One of my favorite Doctor Who lines of all time is when someone asks the Doctor if he's in charge and he bellows, "No, but I'm full of ideas!" As I have written elsewhere, Doctor Who has always been about overcoming adversity, not with might or force, but with cleverness and sheer intellect and the know how that results from being scientifically educated. Everything has a natural explanation. In Doctor Who, Gods are usually ancient aliens, or time travelers, the supernatural always turns out to be some hitherto unexplained but perfectly natural phenomenon, and reason can, when properly applied, overcome just about any obstacle. No wonder so many teachers ("educationalists") in England thought that having your children watch Doctor Who was a great thing! Here we are delivered this message directly by Louise Jamison's character, Leela, when she says, "I used to believe in magic, but the Doctor has taught me about science. It is better to believe in science." This is an important message for children to hear, especially now in a world that seems to be slowly returning to the mentality of the dark ages, where religious, new age, supernatural nonsense is believed more than the fundamental theories of science, such as evolution!

Description

(Horror) When a Canadian research photographer is killed, leaving behind a photo of a boy in an otherwise empty room, paranormal investigative scientist, Hashimoto, and his team investigate the scene. Armed with a newly invented material they capture the ghost: an unidentified 13-year old boy. Who is this ghost? Why does it kill people? As they seal off the room and monitor the captured spirit, they soon learn that even though it's energy can be visibly seen, humans are unable to hear it. In an effort to learn the ghost's past, Hashimoto's team enlists the help of special agent Ye, gifted with extraordinary eyesight and ability to lip-read. As Ye gets closer to solving the riddle of the boy's past, he learns the horrifying truth of the boy's death. Fearing that the ghost child is dangerous, the team decides to isolate the ghost but in doing so they unknowingly unleash a mysterious force, a much more powerful and ferocious energy to which the boy somehow seems connected.

5 out of 5 stars Very complete.......2007-08-12

I certainly agree with all the other reviews. A complete story, unique imagination, with no "missing links" and had that atmosphere of reality which a lot of other ghost type movies lack which makes a huge difference. Would have been nice if the deleted scenes were not deleted, but nevertheless, a brilliant piece of work I reckon that stands out from the others, and concentrating on detail and coherency from start to finish.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent And Creative Sci-Fi Horror Film!.......2007-08-03

The film SILK is a very different and creative horror film. I also recommend it highly, especially if you are looking for something different in the horror genre. With a mixture of sci-fi and horror thrown together, SILK is one entertaining film. The story centers around a team of paranormal investigators who are led by one stubborn and heavily driven character in search of life after death. His name is Hashimoto,(Yosuke Eguchi), and he is the leader of this special paranormal research team. I found his particular character great. Hashimoto is a man in search of immortality; but one with a catch, as he tries to unravel the secrets of life after death.

Hashimoto recruits a select research team of other investigators, and among these is a police sniper named Tung (Change Chen) who has the ability to read lips. This ability to read lips is of the utmost importance to this group of paranormal researchers, and in particular Hashimoto. Their job? To discover the mystery of a boy who happens to also be a ghost. And this is one malevolent ghost. The film introduces the viewer to what is known as a Menger Sponge. This is where sci-fi meets horror. You see, the Menger Sponge is a special anti-gravity device that can enable the researchers to ensnare ghosts. Moreover, the Menger sponge has been reverted to a liquid spray which allows the researchers to see ghosts.

Personally, I found the film fascinating. This is a very different type of horror film. And I always like something different in the horror genre. Also, the acting in this film was very good. Hashimoto's character is great to watch, but the entire film is outstanding. And there are some sad moments to watch in this film as Hashimoto attempts to learn about the afterlife. Further, the character Tung (Chang Chen) gives an extremely good performance, especially when his sick mother is introduced to the film. Chao-Pin Su did a remarkable job with this film, as the writing, cinematography and characters meshed perfectly in this very creative film. I recommend the film SILK, especially for those who like intelligent horror films. The film delivers good horror and drama, and does so in an entertaining way. Highly recommended. [Stars: 4.5]

4 out of 5 stars A truly new concept!.......2007-06-21

I really enjoyed this film. I am a fan of Asian horror films but have gotten tired of the same "vengeful ghost" scenario. OK, so maybe this movie DOES have a vengeful ghost, but it's premise of capturing a ghost for scientific purposes is pretty original. It's a cool blend of sci-fi and horror and I would highly recommend it to Asian horror fans.

4 out of 5 stars Suspenseful and immersive sci-fi, horror flick..........2007-05-21

SILK is a sleeper hit in Asia. I took a chance when I purchased the REGION-3 DTS Hong Kong release and man!, was I pleased with the decision. This is one of the best supernatural thrillers I've seen since SHUTTER, RINGU and THE SIXTH SENSE, and the best thing about it is it doesn't rely on the "WATERLOGGED,long-haired ghost". From what I heard the TARTAN release will use the same video transfer as the Deltamac release.

SYPNOSIS:(May have some spoilers)
The film is a mix of SCI-FI and the usual elements of ASIAN HORROR. A group of scientists led by Hashimoto, armed with a newly invented material called the MENGER SPONGE captures the energy of a ghost child. This invention financed/owned by the Japanese government, is quite malleable and can be used as a coat for walls, for camera filters and can be used as an eye-spray to allow the user to see Ghosts.
They enlist the aid of an agent named Ye Tung, a law enforcer from the JCCU, who can read lips and has a gifted eyesight, to assist them in unveiling the mystery of the ghost child. Hashimoto and his team lets the ghost child loose, so that,Ye, aided with the MENGER SPONGE spray, can see a strand of SILK that emanates from the supernatural child, this strand is the key to a mysterious power.
Ye tracks the ghostly boy and the strand to the horrifying truth of the child's death. Fearing that the ghost child is dangerous and for his own hidden agenda, Hashimoto,(and his team) decides to isolate him, but in doing so, they unknowingly unleashed the supernatural force in the other end of the SILK strand, a MUCH more POWERFUL, and MALEVOLENT energy.

This film really kept my attention for the whole 105 minutes. It doesn't have cheap scares, but instead relies on the plot to slowly unveal, the suspense builds up the closer you approach the climax. Each lead character is developed carefully. It is a story about love, hate and learning to let go, unlike most Asian horror flicks focuses on a VENGEFUL, Blood-thirsty ghost.
Note: The "MENGER SPONGE" does actually exist. Although, the actual Menger Sponge won't allow anyone to perform paranoramal feats or catch ghosts. I still think it is very interesting. Look it up in Wikipedia.

PICTURE: ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN(aspect ratio 1:78). The picture is nicely shot, sharp and smooth. The color pallette leans towards a "Green Bleach" hue, similar to most Japanese horror films. There are some video artifacts on some scenes, but not that noticeable. another very good video transfer from DELTAMAC.
AUDIO/SUBTITLES: Japanese/Mandarin- 5.1 DOLBY DIGITAL and 5.1 DTS. The DTS audio is the way to go. You can hear all the creaks and whispers in a much fuller sound. The English subtitles are well executed, not perfect with some typos here and there, but not distracting and annoying.
SPECIAL FEATURES: Deleted scenes, making-of, Outtakes, photo gallery, extra bonus.

This film is well-worth a look if you like SCI-FI Horror films. I saw this film 4-5 months ago(thanks to the magic of multi-region players), I'm pleased that it received a REGION-1 release this soon so people can see the quality films that come from Asia.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! (for Horror fans)

Scott Bairstow takes over for Ethan Hawke in this spirited (if clichéd) sequel involving a peaceful Haida Indian tribe and a con man in preacher's garb (Alfred Molina, just oozing evil) in 1906 Alaska. Bairstow discovers his inner wolf as he bonds with the tribe and falls in love with the chief's spirited daughter (Charmaine Craig), White Fang finds true love in a snow-white female wolf, and together they take on the dastardly villains who have stopped the caribou and imprisoned the hunters of the tribe. Less Jack London than a juvenile Dances with Wolves, this clunky but action-packed cliffhanger combines old-fashioned matinee Western clichés with Native American spiritualism and a celebration of nature. Though it's hardly subtle, the energetic action scenes and the beauty of the Alaskan summer make this an engaging adventure for the younger set. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Adventure..........................2003-03-03

In this movie Jack has gone back to San Francisco and his friend Henry is mining his claim and caring for White Fang.
This story is mixed with Native American spiritualality and mysticism. They are in need of the white wolf (White Fang, or is it Henry?) to lead them to the caribou they are in need of to prevent starvation among their people.
This sequel is very entertaining with beautiful scenery.
A great family film.

3 out of 5 stars Disney made this up........2003-01-23

I've read White fang and there is no mention of Myth of a White Wolf. Disney had to have a sequel, so they made up this story.

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Movie.......2002-07-06

I have watched this movie a number of times and still find the story to be interesting. The simplicity and predictability of this movie makes it a great movie for younger elementary children, but there is enough plot and action to keep the family entertained. I enjoy the Alaskan setting and the images of the Haida village. There is a love story woven in with the young hero's role of finding the caribou and saving the village, but neither plot goes into anything overly sentimental or complicated.

I have used this movie in a fourth grade classroom to have them identify the main characters, the setting, the problem(plot), and the solution: things that are found in any good story, be it written or in a movie. They enjoyed the movie and it worked well for the assignment. This is a great family movie because it contains these basic story elements and does it well, making it watchable again and again.

5 out of 5 stars White Wolf.......2001-03-08

All I can say is that this was a brillent movie. I'm glad i saw the 2nd White Fang first. The first one was a big turn off to me. The story is about a young man who is having some dificultly understanding the native americans beliefs. With the Help of White fang a a native american girl Henry begins to understand thier ways, but he is soon to discover that the native Americans life is in danger and only he and white fang can save them.

    5 out of 5 stars Really Enjoyed!.......2007-05-27

I really enjoyed this movie. The cover sparked my interest immediately, and the film did not disappoint. I was all smiles from the start (until the very end, naturally). How anyone can look upon the love shared between these two men in disgust (or homosexuals in general for that matter) is beyond me. It's sexy and real and beautiful and sad all in one. And like the director says in the interview available on the disc, it's a story no different than one that can be told between a man and a woman as well. Love is love. Anyway, it's also interesting to learn that the director can relate to both lead characters himself from his own personal experiences with love. And can't we all?

    2 out of 5 stars Ehh..........2006-11-29

I read many reviews saying this was one of the best gay love stories ever. great gay movies are extreemly hard to come by. most are d-movies with horible acting and silly plots and bad filming. i was told by many that this one was "different" its "fantastic". I didnt really like it. It hardly could keep my attenchion for 5 minutes. I didnt care if they stayed together at all. break up? make up? be together forever? more like whatever...will true love conquer all? maybe in a better movie...

2 out of 5 stars Liked It, But Not As Much As I Wanted To -- But I think you'll enjoy it.......2006-02-11

There are plenty of things to like about this movie, but my expectations for "Lan Yu" were several levels higher than any point this flick ever reached.
I do like the "treatment" of the female character the older man left Lan Yu to marry -- it was easy to see why a gay man would try going straight to be with her. Alas, the poor guy was no match for her intellect, and this was made very appparent so that without showing any scenes of their married life I knew why the relationship was doomed from the start, and it wasn't due to his being gay, but due to the fact that he wasn't as astute as was she. I'm glad she was cast as some pathetic fag hag so desperate for the company of a man that she knowingly tried to swim upstream. Looked more like she figured a moderately rich but dumb guy who knew he needed her interllectual skills to get them both to wealth was better than a poor man who shared her intellect but would never acquire any of the material things so appreciated by a woman with good tastes. She would have been age-appropriate for him if not for the fact that he was an adolescent in a middle-aged man's body. She was certainly better-looking than Lan Yu!
Happily, and unlike with that loathesome "Eban & Charlie", things connected up well in Lan Yu, so that little things touch upon early on turned up meaning a lot by the end. I won't be specific so you will have to enjoy watching it yourself.
I was expecting a more attractive actor for Lan Yu. Yeah, I know, you say I'm too shallow. Well, I think if I were an older guy spending money on young bed bunnies, I'd get the prettiest ones my money could buy. Having adjusted to his seeming penchant for the "hardworking young student" type, I was puzzled by his clumsy attempts to make-it with the "young athlete" type. Tell you what though, I got plenty of laughs looking at the body of the guy cast in the "young athlete" role: he looked ridiculous! Like a little mini-Michelin-man! Whenever they pick guys with big-yet-soft-and-flabby-features where there should be hard, well-defined muscles, I think the casting woman must have been using too much heroin that day.
The movie was far too sterile for my liking, which is to say that it needed sex or violence to make it interesting. On the other hand, the men weren't especially attractive, so the lack of sex is a good thing, but they should have made up for it with violence. Show us the accident, for example. In fact, show us such an accident early on, then later we'll already know something like that could happen.
Also, I wonder if there's any benefit to showing one side of a phone conversation with a person who is inconsequential to the plot.
The ending put an interesting twist on everything that preceded it, just as it should.
ENJOY this movie by not having high expectations. In fact, if you want to guarantee you will love this movie more than any other, watch it right after viewing Eban & Charlie. JOKING -- Only Osama Bin Laden should be made to see that piece of crud.

    5 out of 5 stars Surpised me.......2003-10-09

I had no inkling what was in store for my viewing experience when I picked up this DVD out of curiosity at my local public library. Someone had stolen the case cover, so I was trying to figure out what this movie might be about. Alas, I can tell you that I didn't expect at all to see full frontal nudity of a man... in a film from China!

Well, strictly speaking this is a Hong Kong production, I suppose, and I'm sure this is an underground cult in Communist China. I can't imagine "the butchers of Beijing" would let this film run publicly, not only because of its homosexuality theme, but because of the backdrop of corruption among the party elite (what's the Russian word for that?) and the Tiananmen Square protests.

Anyway, the movie is surprisingly good. Some may find the story melodramatic or simple-minded. But as a non-gay person, I find the plot very easy to follow, the emotions very easy to believe in, and the acting superb. The actor who plays the title character is simply outstanding. He exudes both some kind of countryside manhood and yet at the same time a lot of feminine sensitivity. OK, seriously, I'm not gay, but I was totally drawn into the story and into the characters. The death of Lan Yu at the end is just very, very sad.

I'd always thought HK movies were cheesy, low-budget flicks aimed at pleasing the after-hour drunkards. Now I know better. Stanley Kwan has a masterpiece in Lan Yu. It's a movie that will touch the hearts of both gay and non-gay viewers.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible Chinese love story....between two men!.......2003-09-02

I didn't expect the emotional involvement that I developed during this film. The only other Chinese directed film I've watched involving a love story between two men was "The Wedding Banquet", which I enjoyed tremendously. This movie, however, I bought on a whim and it payed off! The story centers around a young architecture student who begins an affair with an older ,successful business man. Lan Yu, the student, is wooed with dinners, money and many superficial things (none of which are important to him) but eventually has his heart broken by Hangdong, who can't commit to a relationship that he thinks will never last. He feels that he must commit to a proper marriage with a woman, and after meeting a smart, beautiful woman that fits the bill as the perfect wife, he marries her and ends his relationship with Lan Yu. Fate, however, brings the two men together some time later after Hangdong has divorced his wife and the two become lovers again but not before Hangdong's job and personal freedom are threatened. Lan Yu, at this time, proves how deeply he loves Hangdong. I won't go further into detail about what happens from there nor will I give away the ending.

"Lan Yu" is a very good movie that people, gay or straight, should see. If you want a really good film, a great date movie, or just a really good love story, buy this film. You will not be disappointed.

With Flowers of Shanghai, Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien delivers the opulent world of late-19th-century Chinese courtesans and their suitors miraculously intact. Hou's films are perhaps the most beguiling yet restrained in all of contemporary cinema, and this is no exception. Told as a series of panel-like portraits, the camera discreetly withdraws from raucous dinner parties and drinking games into the muted, jewel-like chambers of various flower girls. The need to procure patrons and eventual husbands from among their visitors lends an increasing air of anxiety to the games of seduction and betrayal played out within. As the young Master Wang (Tony Leung) soon learns, there is scarcely room for love inside this precarious world of decorum, addiction, and greed. Hou's canny ability to place characters so convincingly within a context is the work of a master filmmaker--nothing is ever assumed or contrived. From the stunning opening dinner scene to the resigned finale, Flowers is a seamless vision. --Fionn Meade

5 out of 5 stars Opium, tea and customers keep the "Flowers" of Shanghai in bloom!.......2007-08-16

    This will not be everyone's cup of green tea.If you are expecting CROUCHING...HIDDEN etc, go elsewhere. If you enjoy deliberate and fixated camera work that moves as slowly and intriquitely as the graceful,quiet movements of the girls of the brothels themselves, then read on, watch the film and learn!This film shows us brothel life in the upscale,British-district "Flower Houses" of 1880's China.Four "flowers" (the girls) are examined in depth through their daily routines, their hopes, their dreams, their motivations, their debts and their customers.The camera work is very reminiscent, IMO, of John Huston's THE DEAD or Terrence Davies films THE LONG DAY CLOSES and NEON BIBLE.The camera slowly,ever so slowly moves as a third party observer;never intruding, but always observing the "hidden" world of the liaisons of the women and men.There is nothing sexual about this film.It is all about the contractual agreements and the way business is done;
Opium and green tea are the main ingredients.

The scenes always take place within the British/Chinese decored "house" parlours, and the lighting is illumined by the natural gas and candlelight to recreate authenticity.

I thought the film brilliant and engrossing, but I am the type that does not require action to keep alert. If you enjoy examining characters closely and increasing your knowledge of the time period and the subject matter, than this will indeed be your cup of green tea!

1 out of 5 stars An awkward and boring movie.......2006-12-06

As a native speaker of Shanghai dialect, I have to say that the script is horrible with dialogs very boring and unnatural. Everyone seems to be able to cut their 5 minutes conversation into 20 seconds to mean what they mean. I love slow Chinese movies that use subtle dialogs to hint at the unseen plots (like In the Mood of Love),because it is an efficient and artful way to present the story while focusing on the characters, but the dialogs here only amplify the blankness of the characters. This is a big disappointment especially because the stories can be potentially interesting and the cast is good! It may be pretty to look at, but I would rather stare at a painting.

1 out of 5 stars Least interesting of all Chinese films I have seen so far.......2006-07-19

I have seen about 45 Chinese films and I have to say "Flowers of Shanghai" is the least interesting one I have seen so far. I don't mind very slow movies and some of the other Chinese movies I have liked, such as "Yellow Earth" are also slow paced.

"Flowers of Shanghai" takes place in a brothel visited by very well to do Qing officials during the 1880's in Shanghai, a city notorious for its brothels between the late 19th century to the 1930's. While this historical context provides for a potentially interesting storyline, I did not find the scenes of drinking, games and conversations among the Qing officials and their expensive ladies interesting.

I am sorry to say I do not recommend "Flowers of Shanghai" unless you are a fan of Hsiao-hsien Hou, the director.

1 out of 5 stars Please save your money.......2005-09-08

Well, to put it in the most polite terms I can think of, this film is on my all time 10 worst films list. I think this film definitely has the potential to top that list.

I am a native speaker Chinese speaker. Plus, I am a native speaker of the Shanghai dialect, the same dialect the actors/actresses in this movie are supposed speak. Well let me tell you from a language standpoint, I had absolutely no idea what those actors/actresses are saying. No clue whatsoever.

It was so painful to hear those actors butcher the Shanghai dialect so badly that I couldn't keep myself from burstting out laughing throughout the movie. It was THAT BAD!? For crying out loud, if the actors couldn't speak the Shanghai dialect, at least use do some dubbing and use some voice actors that can actually speak the Shanghai dialect.

The lead male actor in the movie butchered his Shanghai dialect so badly in the beginning of the movie, that he ended up switching to his native Cantonese dialect for the remainder of the movie. God this is embarrasing.

For a native speaker of Chinese, and a native speaker of the Shanghai dialect, I had to read subtitles in order to understand what's going on in this movie. On top of this, I had to read the subtitles in ENGLISH! Yes that's right, this DVD doesn't even include a Chinese subtitle!

I basically ended up fast forwarding through this movie. The director really should have done some serious work in the cutting room. This movie have the potential to be a good 10 minute short film. But at an hour and half in length, this movie is one of the WORST I have ever seen.

4 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing, Claustrophobic And A Bit Sad.......2005-07-13

This is a gorgeous, claustrophobic and mesmerizing movie about the flower girls -- the prostitutes -- who live and work in four elegant brothels -- the flower houses -- in Shanghai during the late 19th century. The film is set entirely in these houses. There is no natural light, everything is lit by dim lamps and candles. The world is made of dark, carved wood, silks and polished lacquer. There are no cuts, just slow dissolves to black and then into another scene, and the scene can be a continuation of a sequence separated only by minutes, or a move to a different flower girl in a another of the brothels. The effect is almost dream-like.

Flower girls are purchased by the "aunties," the women who run the brothels, when they are 7 or 8. The aunties raise them, feed them, clothe them and train them in the profession of pleasing wealthy men. None have much of a future unless they can fascinate a customer enough to begin a long-term relationship ending in marriage as a second or third wife.

There is Crimson who is supporting her family, and who finds herself unable to keep her relationship with Master Wang (Tony Leung Chiu Wai). There is Jasmine, who manages to marry Wang, and then is foolish enough to enter into an affair. There is Emerald, who is ambitious and knows her worth, who is determined to buy her freedom. There is Jade, increasingly popular and who thinks a young customer's statement of love is true. And there are the men, who spend hours dining and playing drinking games in the houses, attended by the women who pour their wine, laugh with them, prepare their opium pipes and entertain them privately by appointments made with the aunties. By the end of the movie we also realize that while we hear less of Jasmine, Crystal, Pearl and the other women we met or heard about earlier, we now are hearing more about Jade, Treasure, Golden Flower, Laurel, Silver Phoenix, newer flowers of Shanghai. Yet the men remain the same, only a bit older. I want to emphasize that this is no soap opera. Everything has a value, everything can be bargained for, but subtly.

I think this movie is a fascinating look at a different time and style of life. You have to stay with it, though. It's one of those films where at first you may not be sure much is happening. A good deal does, but you have to be open to it.

The DVD picture looks great, rich and dark; the subtitles are black-edged yellow and easy to read quickly. The only extra of significance is a filmography.

    4 out of 5 stars A simple Review.......2007-07-12

Weiss Kreuz Gluhen is a decent series in my opinion. It's not on the great level but it's decent. I loved the characters and the plot went along smoothly. I haven't seen the original series but I hear the character designs were changed due to legal issues. The characters in this season are different from those in the other seasons. This is definitely enjoyable but it's not over the top excellent.

    1 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2007-06-17

I am a major fan of Weiss Kruez, I'm also a huge fan of Schwarz and I was highly disappointed with the animation and character design of Gluhen. First off, Schuldig was completly ruined in my eyes, even granted that a man with long hair does look slightly feminine, he truly looked like a woman in Gluhen and all that I loved and admired about his character was shattered. Crawford and Farfarello were even worse, and what happened to Yohji in this? He get into a fight with a lawn mower and lose? While I have the highest of praise that can be given to Kapital, the first Weiss Kruez, I have hardly any at all for Gluhen...the plot may have become more tortured and more dramatic, but for ruining probably some of the best villians I've seen in anime, and for downright terrible character designs, I flunk it with as heavy a F as I can give. Don't watch this part of the series if you are seriously into the Kapital designs, your visions of the characters will be ultimately shattered. Some got hotter, some just got completly ruined.
