Amazon.com essential video

Jane Austen's classic novel of 1813, Pride and Prejudice, still wins the hearts of countless schoolgirls with its romantic story of Elizabeth Bennet and her Mr. Darcy. Now, the 1996 BBC miniseries is winning over adults, with its faithful adaptation, gorgeous scenery, and superb acting. The essence of the story is the antagonism between Mr. Darcy, a wealthy single man who believes Elizabeth to be beneath him, and Elizabeth, who upon being insulted at a dance by the aloof Darcy refuses to associate with him in any manner. Austen evokes incredible tension with the wit and flirtation of the two characters, and director Simon Langton (who also directed Upstairs Downstairs) successfully translates the repartee and conflict in this six-hour miniseries. Dialogue, for the most part, is painstakingly replicated, except when fleshing out and smoothing for modern sensibilities was necessary. Darcy, for instance, is drawn out, giving his personality significantly more depth. The acting sweeps you away to Regency England: Jennifer Ehle (of Wilde) is convincing as the obstinate Elizabeth, who, despite her mother's attempts to marry her off, spurs the attentions of Darcy. And Colin Firth (of The English Patient) will have women everywhere longing for a Mr. Darcy of their own.

For those who enjoy excellent Austen adaptations such as Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion--this miniseries will round out the ultimate Austen library. For those new to these romantic period pieces, this version of Pride and Prejudice will have you hooked and longing for more. One caveat, however: plan to watch it in an entire day, because very few have the self-control to not watch all six hours in a single sitting. --Jenny Brown

On the DVD
There's a lot to love (and a lot lacking) on the 10th anniversary limited edition. It comes in a tall, embossed green case that's out of place on a DVD shelf but blends right into a library of volumes. The three discs fit snugly in a sleeve, accompanied by a 120-page deluxe companion book. The main attraction, a retrospective documentary, features interviews with key cast members with the sad exceptions of Jennifer Ehle (who played Elizabeth) and Colin Firth (Mr. Darcy), which is bound to disappoint fans. Nonetheless, there are some amusing anecdotes from Mr. and Mrs. Bennet (played by Benjamin Withrow and Alison Steadman), Mary Bennet (Lucy Briers), Mr. Collins (David Bamber), Mr. Bingley (Crispin Bonham-Carter) and Mr. Wickham (Adrian Lukis), who all look drastically different--and younger--without their period costumes and hairstyles. One producer recalls that casting Colin Firth in the role with which his name is now synonymous was not an easy feat: he auditioned having gained weight and dyed his hair blond for another role, looking like "an unmade bed." Even Firth's own brother doubted his ability to pull off the dashing Darcy: "Isn't he supposed to be sexy?"

The special features also include a walking tour of the shooting locations with Lukis and Briers and an A&E Biography episode on Jane Austen that focuses largely on the onslaught of mid-1990s film adaptations of her novels. If it's your first time purchasing Pride & Prejudice, this collector's edition is a nice one to own. But if you already own the movie, you're not missing out on anything here. --Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars Pride and Prejudice-The Special Edition (A&E, 1996).......2007-08-31

WOW! This is a great movie! Colin Firth does a dynamite job of playing Mr. Darcy. I also like how "Kitty" avoids "Mr. Collins" in the later part of the movie. "Mrs. Bennent" does a beautiful job of being melodramatic. This is an excellent movie to watch!

5 out of 5 stars Memorable..........2007-08-30

What can I say but 'simply adorable and memorable'? :) I've always wanted to buy this production on DVD format since I first saw it being broadcasted on a cable TV channel in Brazil called 'People and Arts'. It was love at first sight, that's for sure. That was also the precise occasion when I had the inestimable privilege to know such remarkable actors: Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. And it all happened back in 1997/8, and now I've finally got this extremely well-made movie at home to watch and share with friends, relatives and students whenever I feel like.
Thank you BBC for having produced such a masterpiece, and thank you Amazon for proving me with the possibility of buying this product.

Just because you're all grown up doesn't mean your family dynamics get any easier. Luckily for TV fans, the first season of Brothers and Sisters makes for addictive watching while exploring the intricacies of a family, in crisis and in repose. First, let us give thanks for the amazing Sally Field, who has literally grown up on the small screen, and who now plays the matriarch of the Walker family, though not as a power-mad dowager, but as a well-meaning, slightly naive but fiercely loyal California girl gone ever-so-slightly gray. In fact, when this show debuted in the fall of 2006, it was known as the "new Calista Flockhart show," but Field quickly became the standout in a stellar ensemble cast.

While the Walkers' problems of money and business deals may seem rarefied to some, the family pecking orders and feuds are universal and handled deftly by the writers and the actors, including Patricia Wettig, the icy former mistress of the dearly departed Walker pere (Tom Skerritt), and brothers Dave Annable and Balthazar Getty. Rachel Griffiths is a tart sisterly counterpoint to Flockhart's flighty Ann Coulter wannabe. In short, anyone with a family should be able to relate. And, perhaps, cringe a bit. --A.T. Hurley

Studio description

Enter the complex world of the Walkers, and explore what it means to be an American family in the 21st century. Though they live very different and conflicting lives, the Walkers find unity under the family roof. Relationships bend but never break as they strive to find their own identities and embrace each other's differences. It's "an encounter to look forward to," says The Wall Street Journal. Get caught up in one of television's most reflective and sophisticated dramas. Calista Flockhart, Sally Field, Rachel Griffiths, Ron Rifkin, Balthazar Getty and Patricia Wettig lead a stellar cast in ABC's critically acclaimed hit Brothers & Sisters. Experience every episode of Season One, including exclusive, in-depth bonus material, in this six-disc DVD set.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely recommend.......2007-09-15

I didn't watch this show during its original run because there were so many other shows on my tv-addict list. During the summer slow months I decided to give it a try and started watching the episodes at ABC.com. I finished the season in a week. I was hooked from the first episode and the season just kept getting stronger.

While the show goes through some growing pains during its first year--with some awkward scenes and plot lines--overall the relationships between the five Walker siblings are smart, cuttingly funny, realistic and true to life. They're far from perfect by themselves, far less perfect with each other, and the family dynamics are by turns hilarious, heartwrenching and heartwarming to watch. The snarky sniping of the family is just pitch perfect.

I also really, really like how there are very few cliches and easy answers. The relationships and issues are ongoing all Season long; they don't just resolve overnight with easy answers. The characters themselves, including the 'bad guys' are very human and even when you don't like them, you can understand their motivations. No one on the show is a card board cut out character. Although I invested in all the characters and storylines, my two favorites in the Walker clan are probably Kevin and Justin. Kevin is the gay attorney with emotional availability issues. He is very much of the awesome and I love his snarky relationship with Kitty (played by Callista Flockheart) and his endearingly screwy ways of trying to conduct his relationships. Justin is the youngest brother (maybe I relate because I'm the youngest of four) who served a tour in Afghanistan as a medic and is now using drugs to cope with life. As the season goes on you like and sympathize with Justin more and more as he struggles to find his path.

Even though I've now seen all the episodes of Season 1, I'm still ordering the DVD because I want my own copy. And I can't wait for Season 2!

p.s. It's also a personal plus for me that the family's Uncle Saul is played by Ron Rifkin. I enjoyed his evil Arvil Sloane turn on Alias for years and its cool to see him playing an actual good guy; a caring older brother and Uncle who shows an occasionally snarky, gleeful side.

5 out of 5 stars Great new drama.......2007-09-14

I knew I was going to like this show the minute I found out that Sally Field and Rachel Griffiths (who is nominated for an Emmy this year for her performance) were going to star in the show. I didn't really know much about the other actors except for Calista Flockhart (from Ally McBeal fame) and Tom Skirrit (who is only in the pilot and then featured in a few other episodes). They all do a fabulous job if you ask me.

The show is basically centered around the Walker family with Sally Field playing the matriarch Nora Walker. Then you have her two daughters, Kitty (Flockhart) and Sarah (Griffiths) and her three sons, Tommy (Balthazar Getty), Kevin (Matthew Rhys) and Justin (Dave Annable). Of course, each family member has his or her share of problems, just like any family. Patricia Wettig is also a part of the ensemble, portraying Holly Harper the woman who probably has the biggest secret of all...and she isn't even related to the family...not biologically anyway. Emily VanCamp joined the show later in the season, playing a mysterious character, Rebecca...all we knew from the beginning was that she was Holly's daughter. And then you have Rob Lowe who also joined mid-season playing Republican Senator Robert McCallister which is kind of ironic because when he was on The West Wing, he played a Democrat who basically despised the Republicans. Nice change of pace for him though.

All in all, this is a great new series from ABC. I like the fact that it follows my other favorite show Desperate Housewives. If you like DH, chances are you'll like Brothers & Sisters as well.

5 out of 5 stars Two Words: Sally Field........2007-09-13

Despite a first season that seemed haphazardly plotted - just how many men did Nora date so soon after the death of her beloved longtime husband? I believe she had as many men coming and going as her son, Kevin - yet this show has an unbelievably Talented cast of actors with some great scripts. One of the best dramas on the air. And two words: SALLY FIELD. I fell in love with her and every single great performance. Powerful, moving, touching, funny - Sally Field is AMAZING. It may be called Brothers & Sisters, but Mom Nora is the heart and soul of this show.

5 out of 5 stars TV's BEST new & simply THE BEST Drama of 2006 !.......2007-08-30

I was simply thrilled to see Sally Field on the small screen this fall ! Also, seeing Rachel Griffith and Calista Flockhart on the same series with Miss Field is such a treat ~ each of the main characters are vibrant and offer their own dynamic to this show.

I am particularly proud of the producer's bringing important real life issues such as coming out as a celeberity and people's personal view points of the war still going on in Iraq." Most of us have mixed emotions, for obvious reasons, about any subhect dealing with this war - and I am happy we are seeing people's reactions about 9/11 on the small screen theater vs the news for the first time.

This show takes chances and challanged itself through the season to introduce topics that they knew would get people engaged in conversation.
The stories of Kevin and Justin are the most interesting to watch unfold and I look forward to seeing where the producer's take the characters next season.

Bravo ! Bring on further season ~

5 out of 5 stars One of the few bright spots of modern television.......2007-08-22

Somehow this show originally escaped my radar - then I was talking to a friend about a song from one of the "Ally McBeal" soundtracks and she said, "have you seen the new show with Calista? And Rachel Griffiths from 6 Feet Under? And Sally Field and Patricia Wettig?" I went home that night, set a TIVO season pass, and was relieved to find all the full-length, previously-aired episodes on ABC.com. Soapy? A bit. Addictive? Definitely!

Some actors and their stories, like the brother and his wife trying to conceive, aren't the most mesmerizing...but overall this is a show you can easily get addicted to. Just the right amount of drama and humor to keep it from being a one-note affair, and the parade of guest stars (Meredith Baxter, Marion Ross, Susan Sullivan and Rob Lowe, who's technically credited as Special Guest Star for this season) is icing on the cake. I'm anxious for the new season to begin...and I can't remember the last time I said that about a series that wasn't on HBO!

Product Description

Actor Griffin Dunne improves a bit on his first film as a director, Addicted to Love, with this drama-comedy about a family of witches. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock play spell-casting sisters of different temperaments: the former is a high-living, free-spirited sort, while Bullocks character is a homebody who can not get around a family curse that kills the men in their lives. A widowed single mom, Bullock gets into a jam with an abusive Bulgarian (Goran Visnjic) and is helped out by her sibling, but the result brings a good-looking, warm, inquisitive cop (Aidan Quinn) into their lives. The film has a variety of tonal changes--cute, scary, glum--that Dunne can not always effectively juggle. But the female-centric, celebratory nature of the film (the fantasies, the sharing, the witchy bonds) is infectious, and supporting roles by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as Kidman and Bullocks magical aunts are a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Not completly correct with certain concepts of Witchcraft but the closest Hollywood has gotten........2007-08-30

I love this movie. Despite myself practiceing the craft and this movie being slightly wrong about some certain concepts, overall it's damn good for Hollywood. We don't kill people or bring them back from the dead, or even mess with people's lives. But the overall concept in the movie was correct. Do see this movie even if you are a Witch or not. It's awesome.

1 out of 5 stars Skip this movie.......2007-08-05

You're better off going to the library and checking out the book version of Practical Magic, a truly delightful book filled with interesting characters about love, and sisters.
This movie on the other hand is a psuedo-feminist typical dull chick flick devoid of the magic and beauty of the book it's based on.
They took all the good stuff out like the relationship between one of the characters daughters, and her trying to flee her aunts so they could lead a normal life, or the science teacher and filled it with high fructose corn syrup cornness. For the real better story, just read the book instead.

5 out of 5 stars Magic is right!!!.......2007-08-01

I love this movie! It gives witchcraft a great view. It's the story of two orphaned sisters who were born into a family of witches. Through the good times and bad, the magic of family, love, and yes, witchcraft prevails!

5 out of 5 stars There's a little witch in all of us, as Aunt Jet would say.......2007-07-20

This is such a beautifully, well-written movie. You really believe Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are sisters, and descendants of witches at that. I fell in love with their home (which by the way was not a real Victorian home but a shell). Trying to replicate the home on the Sims2Exchange but without decent blueprints, you need a wee bit of magic to create it. After viewing on TV, I had to buy the DVD. It's romantic but not mushy romantic. Any movie with Sandra Bullock in it is worth watching. She is such a versatile actress. So gather your love ones around you and prepare to be enchanted in a practical magic sort of way.

5 out of 5 stars So Magical.......2007-07-12

I loved this movie. Anything with magic I love. Sandra Bullock, and Nicole Kidman does an excellent job playing as two sisters who are modern day witches. It's just magical, I love it!!!!

Spanish for "Coming Back," Volver is a return to the all-female format of All About My Mother. Unlike Pedro Almodóvar's previous two pictures, the story revolves around a group of women in Madrid and his native La Mancha. (The cast received a collective best actress award at Cannes.) Raimunda (a zaftig Penélope Cruz) is the engine powering this heartfelt, yet humorous vehicle. When husband Paco (Antonio de la Torre) is murdered, Raimunda makes like Mildred Pierce to deflect attention away from daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo). After telling everyone the lout has left, she struggles to conceal his body. The other women in her life all have secrets of their own. Her sister, Sole (Lola Dueñas), for instance, has taken in their mother, Irene (a sprightly Carmen Maura). Since Irene perished in a fire, is this person a ghost or simply a woman who looks like her? Then there's their childhood friend, Agustina (Blanca Portillo), who is desperate to find out why her mother disappeared after the blaze. Was she responsible? Almodóvar deftly blends the ghost story with the murder mystery in his tribute to the Italian neo-realist films of the 1950s. The resilient Raimunda is a throwback to the earthy heroines of Sophia Loren and Anna Magnani. The latter appears in Luchino Visconti's Bellissima, which shows up on Sole's television one night (thus confirming the link). If Almodóvar's 16th feature lacks the emotional punch of the more audacious Talk to Her, it's less heavy-handed than Bad Education and Cruz is a revelation. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

1 out of 5 stars Call me a killjoy but..........2007-09-11

I don't think we women need a man to tell us that we really don't need men in our lives (even when we need to move a huge freezer with a dead guy in it), that we're capable of supporting each other and forming happy little communities of just our strong selves that reject all those perverted male slackers and any other men that might come sniffing around (What? I am a feminist). Almodovar's story is so been-done-already. Anotonia's Line did it much better and won the 1995 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. It was even less subtle, but at least it was written and directed by a woman.

I was really bored by this little soap opera, but kept watching because I was hoping for a twist in the end. I thought that maybe, in the end, the little family might make sense because it would turn out that ridiculously gorgeous Raimunda was actually not related by blood to her mother Irene and sister Soledad, who, played by Carmen Maura and Lola Duenas, actually look believable and very much like mother and daughter but nothing like Penelope Cruz who got so much attention for her portrayal of Raimunda. But no such luck. Evidently, Almodovar just had to have Penelope, with her cleavage and pouty mouth, in his movie, whether she made sense or not.

4 out of 5 stars Great Great movie.......2007-09-08

Memorable lines, memorable characters and a certain magic only Almodóvar can bring...This is a great movie in the true style of Almodóvar films. Penélope Cruz powerfully acts the character of Raimunda and shines doing so. This powerful cast of women act with the poignant entonation that is reminiscent of theater (with their strong and paused acting perfectly queued to deliver the perfect lines) but with the allure and aesthetics of film. The actress that played the daughter is not as good though: a little bland or jaded. This is defiantely a movie to see.

5 out of 5 stars Volver lives up to Oscar Hype!.......2007-08-28

I loved this movie. All the female stars are excellent. It was hard to know if it was a ghost story or real. The director is always great with the way he tells stories from a women's point of view. This film was even better than his classic, "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown." I highly recommend this film! Cruz shines!

3 out of 5 stars Loud Kisses of Almodovar's Women.......2007-08-27

Along with "El Laberinto del fauno" and "Babel", "Volver" (2006)- written and directed by Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar tale of family ties, hidden secrets, deaths, and forgiveness is a disappointment for me. One of the most praised and showered with the awards films from last year, "Volver", is IMO dull, non-compelling, and often laughable when supposed to be sweet, moving, and dramatic. I see what Almodovar was trying to do in "Volver". It is his own "Amarcord", his tribute and loving dedication to the women in his life, his admiration for mothers, daughters, sisters, and aunts; for eternal femininity as a driving force of life, for women's love, strengths, understanding, and their complicated but caring relationships. "Volver" is above all about the closest, the most tender and most complex relationship two women may have, that of a mother and her daughter, and how far a mother would go to protect her child, her girl who is always a little girl for her no matter how old she is, and how much a mother would regret and blame herself for not having noticed things that would ruin her child's life and forever alter in the most devastating ways the child's love and trust for her mother.

In "Volver" ("To Return" in English), a mother (Irene, played by Carmen Maura) comes from dead to resolve the problems and to settle the affairs she could not finish during her life and by doing so, she would repair and re-vitalize her relationship with her daughters (Penélope Cruz, in an Oscar-nominated performance, and Lola Dueñas in an understated, subtly humorous performance) and her teenage granddaughter (Yohana Cobo, Cruz's daughter).

"Volver" is also the writer/director's love letter to the Italian films of 50th and 60th with the great stars Anna Magniani and Sophia Lauren shining as strong earthy beautiful and sensual women - mothers. It is for that reason, in one of the scenes of "Volver", Irene watches on TV an old movie, "Bellissima" (1951) directed by Luchino Visconti with Anna Magnani as a mother who desperately tries to make her little girl's life better than hers. It is also for the same reason, Penelope Cruz had to put on few pounds for her Raimunda and to use a prosthetic device that artificially enhanced her rear end and widened her hips which along with her huge dark eyes and voluptuous sex appeal made her look like Sophia Loren's of the "Two Women" (1960 ) re-incarnation. I am gladly joining the legion of viewers for whom Cruz was a revelation in her third Almodovar's film. She's never looked more stunning and I am sure that she is a much better actress in Spanish films where she is natural, confidant, comfortable, and commands the screen. "Volver" has been her best achievement so far. Her Oscar nomination is well deserved as the Cannes Best Actress award to the female ensemble cast is. All performances in "Volver" are above average and deserve the praise.

As for the movie itself, I think Almodovar went too far in his idolizing and idealizing women and depicting all males in the movie as no good, cheating, and abusive evil presence. His verdict for them - they don't deserve to live. Not only that, the men in "Volver" don't even deserve their mysterious disappearances and/or suspicious deaths be investigated properly because nobody seem to care, and the least - Pedro Almodovar. He is too busy to photograph the women kissing each other so often that it becomes irritating and annoying.

While watching the film, another famous European director, no less ambitious with the distinguished style, came to my mind - Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Almodovar has been often compared to Fassbinder because of similar for both directors' approach in creating iconoclastic films with elements of gay and counter culture incorporated into mainstream genres; the films that masterfully combine violence and sensuality, sentimental melodrama and soap opera with dark comedy, and the ambitious use of prime colors. Both directors have made wonderful movies about women. While Fassbinder was able to show his admiration for but never idealization of women, Almodovar was not fully successful in his latest film due to the story which is inconclusive, non-logical, often implausible, and more than often simply non-involving with many plot lines never been resolved, many questions never been answered, and with the ending, abrupt like in the middle of the conversation

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful! .......2007-08-17

Almodovar never fails when it comes to heartfelt entertainment. I'm a huge fan, and "Volver" did not disappoint. The very simple, yet very complicated, scenario is populated by real, fleshed-out characters, given complete interpretations by a stellar cast. Ms. Cruz, of course, is luminous, and her talents belie atrocious handling in Hollywood. Those beautiful eyes say so much, and her control centers the crazy goings on. It's hard to describe the plot, even a bit, without blabbing away vital plot-points, but it's certainly a showcase for women, which is where Sr. Almodovar excels. All of the women fit their roles perfectly, and the great Carmen Maura is back to add endless intrigue. Indeed, so many women with so many completely different issues, in this age of "thankless role for women", is certainly a treasure. The brilliant use of color to enhance the proceedings, as well as the mind-blowing plot(s), put this high on Sr. Almodovar's list of fine achievements.

4 out of 5 stars What can I say? A fun movie is a fun movie..........2007-07-05

The comments of a previous user mirror mine; I'm never one to like movies aimed at a teenage demographic, and in fact, consider a number of more gruesome films to be among my favorites. However, there's just no denying "Wish Upon a Star." Like most people, I first encountered this movie on the Disney Channel when I was younger, and managed to see it a large number of times due to the fact that it was constantly on. It's been some seven-odd years since I last saw it, and after viewing it again today, I'm amazed to proclaim that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sure, there's definitely the nostalgia factor; it really captured the feel of the 90s, especially with the classic 90s alt-rock/pop sound of Moonpools and Caterpillars on the film's soundtrack (look for the band "performing" live in the closing scene). It was also interesting to watch it from an adult perspective (now I understand what the characters meant when they discussed virginity), as well as seeing all of the little bits that Disney trimmed to make it more palatable for younger audiences. Nostalgia notwithstanding, however, "Wish Upon a Star" is simply a fun, enjoyable film. Sit back, relax, and throw out your inhibitions about watching a teenage-geared movie, and you're guaranteed to have a blast.

5 out of 5 stars Suprising for Disney.......2007-06-27

This is one of a kind Disney movie that is different and better than a typical Disney movie. I really recommend this movie to anyone, whether you are or are not a Disney fan.

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Movie!!!.......2007-06-18

A fun family movie!

The performaces are fun, and these leading actresses are really good at their jobs.

The story is simple and fun, and revolves around sibling rivality and high school experiences. Personally, I find this to be a very nice family movie to watch. It's got a nice story line, good writing, great acting, nice music and clothing style, and lot of laughs.

If you want to just sit and watch a nice high school disney movie this is the movie for you. don't expect an Oscar, you will be disappointed, but it's defiantly not a bad movie at all. This movie use to be shown on Disney Channel a lot back in the days, but now it's been taken out completely for a while now. It's safe to buy it, it's not expensive at all and it's worth the few dollars that it's going for.

The DVD and cover looks very girly and you might think it's just another high school girly movie, but I think it has much more than that. Personally I'm a guy and I enjoyed this movie. Beautiful young leading ladies, and lots of laughs to keep me entertained. The parents are very funny, yet clueless as well but their fun to watch.

I highly recommend these good family value movies, their defiantly worth watching and they teach you how to live your life to the fullest, appose to stay in the shadows and wish you were someone else.

Good movie, good price, good acting.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-05-22

My sister and I used to watch this movie over and over when we were younger. I'm so glad it's on DVD now!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for sisters!.......2007-05-21

"Wish Upon a Star" is an adorable movie that my sister and I loved to watch when they used to show it on the Disney Channel in the 90's. 10 years later, I finally broke down and bought it. I'm so glad I did. Its still charming and the slightly dated elements add character and provide some extra laughs. Its a fun "girl" movie to watch especially with your sister.

Part of the new wave of Christian filmmaking, The Last Sin Eater appeals to a broader family audience as well--and perhaps film lovers seeking, simply, more soul in their cinema. The film, directed by Michael Landon Jr., has more than a bit of homage to Little House on the Prairie as its story unfolds through the eyes of its young heroine, Cadi, a Welsh immigrant whose family has settled deep in Appalachia, bringing superstitions and rites from the Old World and melding them with those from the new. Cadi is played by Liana Liberato with gravitas and knowingness that evokes the young Anna Paquin. Cadi's turmoil begins at the deeply disturbing nighttime funeral for her beloved Granny, when a shadowy figure creeps in and chants, "For your earthly sins, woman, I pawn my own soul!" Cadi, warned her own soul would be in peril if she looked upon the sin eater, can't help turn around and lock eyes with the wretched man. And so begins Cadi's own journey of the soul. As tragedy and evil plague the plucky settlement, Cadi is driven to understand her own life and religious choices. "Would I have to live to be Granny's age to be forgiven for my sins?" a bleakly discouraged Cadi wonders in a voiceover. The costumes are sumptuous (perhaps a bit too much so for such a hardscrabble existence in the 1850s), as is the lovely but unforgiving landscape. Cadi's journey is rewarding, yet not at all predictably so. Terrific supporting appearances by Henry Thomas and Louise Fletcher flesh out a very moving tale. Extras include some deleted scenes, and some cool behind-the-scenes footage. --A.T. Hurley

Description

10-year-old Cadi feels responsible for her little sister's death, so she searches out the one man she feels can take away her sin: The Sin Eater. But in her quest for redemption, Cadi uncovers a secret that threatens to divide her family and community in this heartwarming, inspirational tale for the entire family. Based on the novel by best-selling author Francine Rivers.

The Last Sineater was a great movie - The acting was great and the story line was interesting as well as entertaining. Christianity was woven into the movie in a both subtle and profound way. This is a drama I won't soon forget.

I am an avid reader of all Francine Rivers books so I was thrilled to see this book put to the big screen. Michael Landon Jr sticks to the story line quite well and does not divert from the essential message of the story which is Christ is the only means of forgiveness. This was a very well done movie and highly entertaining. I recommend to all!!

A couple of old Dames make the slender story of Ladies in Lavender surprisingly moving. Janet and Ursula (Maggie Smith and Judi Dench), a pair of elderly sisters living on the Cornish coast, discover a young Polish man named Andrea (Daniel Bruhl, Goodbye Lenin!) washed ashore and barely alive. They nurse him back to health and discover that he's a talented violinist--a fact also recognized by a mysterious young woman (Natascha McElhone, The Truman Show), who may woo Andrea away from them. The core of the movie is not its plot but the skillful and delicate play of emotions underlying how the sisters treat Andrea; Ursula, a spinster, finds herself sliding from maternal affection to an embarrassing but irresistible schoolgirl crush. Ladies in Lavender captures something that few contemporary movies bother to consider: Older men and women are as capable of passion and desire as the young, but the young carelessly (and sometimes cruelly) disregard the old. In the hands of Dench (Shakespeare in Love, Iris) and Smith (California Suite, Gosford Park)--as well as David Warner (Time After Time) as a bitter doctor--Ladies in Lavender becomes a bit like a violin concerto itself: Discreet and subtle, but finding in the smallest movements a richness of feeling. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful. Moving. Gorgeous........2007-08-23

I'd like to transplant myself in a little home next to the sisters' house, it would be bliss. Beyond the absolutely stunning scenery and costuming, this is a bittersweet, lovely movie.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous! Funny and Great Family Movie!.......2007-08-22

I'm glad I bought this movie because I enjoyed it very much. It was funny and entertaining. No profanity or bad scenes which was fabulous. You will not be disappointed. I'm a sucker for british films and love the accent.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Setting, Worthwhile Characters, Quiet Story.......2007-07-30

The character studies in this period piece entranced me. The scene is pre-WWII British coastal village. Fine actresses (Maggie Smith and Judi Dench) portray the elderly sisters who discover the half-drowned youth on the beach and take him into their home to recuperate from his broken ankle.
At first they react to his vulnerability, like an adopted puppy, but then their interest becomes more personal as they vie for his attention and favor. The competition fosters unrest between the sisters.
The young man, Andrea, gets English lessons from one sister and the best tidbits from the kitchen. When they learn of his interest in violins, they arrange for a local fiddle player to entertain him during his recuperation. Andrea borrows the violin and demonstrates admirable skill with the instruments.
The quiet story gets complicated when one sister's attachment to the youth becomes too serious for the age disparity. Also a young foreign woman takes an interest in Andrea and his violin playing. There seems a bit of mystery about her reason for being in the village. The local doctor fancies her, but wonders about German speaking Andrea while Britain prepares for war.
The period, costuming, pacing and mood often led me to look for Poirot or Miss Marple to appear at any moment. They never did, but I very much enjoyed the story and characters anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Superb Acting and Cinematography...........2007-07-05

In pre-war England two sisters, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, have their quiet seaside vacation abruptly interrupted when they notice the body of a young man washed ashore near their cottage the morning after a terrible storm. They take the young man home and, with the help of their housekeeper (a real card...she's hysterical!) begin the arduous process of nursing him back to health. When he is strong enough to be able to communicate with them, they realize he is of Polish descent. Thus one of the sisters, Ursula (played beautifully by Judi Dench) takes it upon herself to teach him English, and in the process, develops romantic feelings for him. We soon learn that the young man is Andrea, a gifted violinist who was trying to get to America in pursuit of a better life. As he grows stronger in health and is constantly provided for by the sisters, he begins to yearn for friendships outside of their household. However, the two sisters, particularly Ursula, remain very possessive of him and make every attempt to limit his outside dealings with others. Conflict arises when Andrea befriends a beautiful German artist who has rented a cottage in town, and the villagers begin to suspect that they are up to no good.

What is so refreshing about this film is the superb acting by Dench, Smith and an outstanding supportive cast. Nothing is forced on the viewer; the action is all very laid back and the story just sort of unravels as the actors carry us from one scene to another. Granted, the entire premise of the story is a bit, dare I say "unimaginative", but the acting is what makes this so incredibly beautiful. Give this one a go on a leisurely afternoon when you have a couple of hours to spare and want to spend uniterrupted time with a laid back movie. You'll be glad you did.

Product Description

From Jane Austen's classic novel about the morals and mores of the class system in Georgian England.

The intelligent and spirited Elizabeth Bennet is one of five daughters -- which, during that era, meant trouble: because women cannot inherit, upon her father's death her family's home will become the property of their nearest male relative. Only marriage, preferably to someone wealthy, can ensure her security. But the proud young lady instantly takes offense when Mr. Darcy, a promising newcomer in town, doesn't seem quite admiring enough, and she spurns his advances.

Slowly and painfully, Elizabeth realizes her error, but not before it seems she has lost Mr. Darcy forever.

--Ellen A. Kim

As others have noted, this is superb. I have watched it many times and it never grows old. I find this far superior to the newer, cinematic version.

Whoopi Goldberg plays a Reno lounge singer who hides out as a nun when her villainous boyfriend (Harvey Keitel) goes gunning for her. Maggie Smith is the mother superior who has to cope with Whoopi's unorthodox behavior, but the cute script turns the tables and shows how the latter energizes the stodgy convent with song and attitude. A real crowd-pleaser and a perfect vehicle for Goldberg, this is a happy experience all around. --Tom Keogh

    5 out of 5 stars Lasting Fun.......2007-09-16

"Sister Act,"(1992), a big hit in its time for Disney's Touchstone Studio, is now 25 years old, and surely worth a closer look. Its plot -- script by Joseph Howard--is, of course, lighter than air, concerning one Deloris Van Cartier, second rate Reno lounge singer (Whoopi Goldberg), who is unlucky enough to catch her married, mobbed-up boyfriend Vince La Rocca (Harvey Keitel), committing an execution-style murder. If she wishes to live to testify against him, she's got to go on the run, and she does -- to a failing, out-of-touch San Francisco convent run by Dame Maggie Smith as its Mother Superior. The first thing to say is the script's not only funny, it's also witty -- particularly in the battles of wits between Goldberg's character, rechristened Sister Mary Clarence for convent purposes, and Maggie Smith's Mother Superior. And the wit has held up. The second thing to say is the movie's celebrated Motown musical interludes have held up even better, and that's no accident.

To begin with, the movie was produced for Disney by New York-born Scott Rudin, who has a sure hand with a light film. You could easily think the lead part was written for Goldberg, as it fits her like a glove, but in fact, it wasn't. It was written for Bette Midler, then the studio's favorite musical/comedy star: the New York-born Goldberg just made it hers. Furthermore, Keitel is frequently accused of a lazy performance in this movie: but when the Brooklyn-born actor gets a chance to sink his teeth into a line like "bupkis--" that's Brooklynite/Yiddish for "nothing" to you, he delivers it with gusto. And the picture introduced the winning Kathy Najimi, as Sister Mary Patrick, to the audience.

But Disney's greatest luck, in regard to this film, has to be the trio of talented men, all born in the greater New York area, who made the musical interludes as infectious as they are. Its director, Emile Ardolino, born in 1943 in Maspeth, Queens, unfortunately passed from us, in 1993, in Bel Air, of AIDS. But it was well-known that he could do magic with musicals. He won an Oscar in 1984 for a documentary, "He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin'." And he's further credited with "Dirty Dancin'," and "Gypsy," two multiple award-winning musicals that also haven't lost their appeal. To arrange the music, the studio kept the musical director of Bette Midler's stage shows, the New Jersey-born Marc Shaiman. We now know that he, too, is extraordinarily talented musically: he's recently written "Hairspray," that's won Grammy, Tony, and Emmy Awards, and is also more than likely to pick up an Oscar or two this year. Finally, the musical scenes were choreographed by Lester Wilson, an experienced man with a Motown connection: among his other triumphs, he choreographed "Saturday Night Fever." You just gotta say that these guys couldn't put a foot wrong, musically-speaking, and it shows -- will continue to show-- on the screen.

5 out of 5 stars Hail Mary and Holy rockin'.......2007-08-30

What a riot! A black cabaret motown singer witnesses her boyfriend killing someone - 'I've never seen a dead guy before! - I mean, you see the odd body on the freeway, but that's it'. She ends up under witness protection at a convent. She is predictably bored with the monastic life, but soon finds her niche - taking over the dilapidated choir. She fuses religion with the spirit of motown and gets the nuns singing. They prepare for a visit of the pope - but the mob are also on her trail. Which will prevail in the swinging and thrilling musical climax?

    4 out of 5 stars A fun, family-friendly movie!.......2007-06-17

If you're looking for a fun, family-friendly movie to watch on a lazy Sunday, this is it. Whoopi Goldberg was made for this movie with her great acting and quirky lines.

So what's this movie about? A lounge singer named Delores has to go into hiding when her (ex)boyfriend comes after her after shooting someone in front of her eyes. Delores must become the complete opposite of what she is. She must disguise herself as a nun. While dealing with the extremely early wakeup times, the crazy nuns, and not being able to do things she's used to doing, she finds herself as the leader of the church's choir. She ends up turning the once awful choir into a spectacle (even the pope has to see it for himself!). This movie shows Ms. Goldberg having to cope with her life as a nun while staying away from the man who is trying to kill her.

So what's to like about this movie? It's just a fun, little movie to watch that'll pass a couple of hours leaving you entertained. I wasn't expecting much going into it because it's not meant to be an Oscar-worthy film but you'll be really surprised that the storyline is actually decent and original. The nuns are funny and kids will get a kick out of them.

What's not to like? Not much. As I said above, it's not supposed to be a ground-breaking movie so don't expect much out of it.

Be sure to watch this movie (along with the sequel) and add it to your movie collection!

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Fun!.......2007-02-09

This movie is Fun, Fun, FUN! The music is irresistible and it delivers laughs every minute. The story follows a low-rent casino singer, Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi), who witnesses her mobster boyfriend, Vince LaRocca (Harvey Keitel) muder an employee. She goes straight to the police, who hide her from Vince in a convent while preparing for his trial. The Mother Superior (Maggie Smith), puts up with Deloris's unorthodox behavior long enough for her to turn the convent's chior into a swinging, soulfull hit. But when the group gets rave reviews, Vince and his goons go hunting for Deloris. Will they find her?
This movie is purely halarious! Whoopi and Maggie Smith are brilliant, and all of the acting is awesome! The music is toe-tapping (you must buy the soundtrack), and the story is fun! You must watch this movie!

This Woody Allen boxed set captures the first half of what could be called Allen's "Mia period," his films from the early 1980s. The lighthearted A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, about the neurotic romping of a bunch of friends at a country house, marks the beginning of Woody and Mia Farrow's film relationship, followed by Zelig, Allen's clever pseudo-documentary of a man who just wants to fit in. Broadway Danny Rose, the tale of a mediocre talent agent who gets involved with a client's wife, is seen as a trifle by some but held as one of Allen's best films by others. But the next two are a pair of undisputed knockouts: The Purple Rose of Cairo, in which the hero of a movie (Jeff Daniels) steps off the screen to help a woeful waitress (Farrow). The ending is at first heart-wrenching, then finds a wistful hope. Hannah and Her Sisters is possibly, after Annie Hall, Allen's most loved movie, with its Chekhovian mix of love and sorrow in the lives of three sisters (Farrow, Dianne Wiest, and Barbara Hershey). Hannah won a number of awards, including Oscars ® for best screenplay and supporting acting for both Wiest and Michael Caine (as Farrow's husband). Finally, the nostalgic Radio Days rounds out the set with a gentle look at entertainment back when people had to dream up their own pictures. These six films represent one of Allen's strongest periods; he moved fluidly from comedy to drama, avoiding big statements but ruefully exploring the foibles of humanity. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars More of a Good Thing.......2007-09-16

"Hannah" is a grand film, one of the best in years, a film which stands up after some twenty years. The acting is magnificent, beginning with Michael Caine , of course, but there isn't a weak moment in the entire picture. One grand slam would be enough of anybody, but this collection includes another minor masterpiece, "Purple Rose." This one is deep and moving, as well as being cute and fun. One element of Allen's genius is his love of silliness, a painful talent to possess, according to Allen, who evidently prefers the dark side. Still, there is that Groucho Marx-quality in him and it is shown well here, where actors hop on and off the screen, and shock us with their sweet innocence. Farrow takes steps here that will mature into one of the great film persona of the decade. She has it all, and Allen had the genius to see it.

5 out of 5 stars Very good, fairly homogeneous selection of titles........2005-05-02

This Woody Allen collection of six (6) early to middle films is more homogeneous than the first. You do not have the very serious `Interiors' sitting between two of Allen's funniest movies. But, there are some bumps along the road if you start watching this from the top and are not familiar with Allen's works. The titles in this set are:

    A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy
    Zelig
    Broadway Danny Rose
    The Purple Rose of Cairo
    Hannah and Her
