This big, fat theatrical bomb has a lot going for it. There's the three leads, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, playing three resurrected witches who wreak havoc on Salem, Massachusetts, 300 hundred years after they were hung. There's music, special effects, and magic. There's a surprisingly horror-filled plot. Whoops, hold up on that last one. It's probably the extremes that this film goes to (displaying a Disney label), such as the witches sucking the life out of a little girl in the first five minutes, that put the brakes on any success for Hocus Pocus. Older children, however, in the 8 and up range should get a kick out of all the weird goings-on. It's a good measure of Halloween thrills and chills. --Keith Simanton

This is the second time that I haven't gotten my order by the time they said they were going to get it to me. If I have to I will go to another company to get these items because there are more movie that I would like to get.

Ever since this movie first came out in theaters, my sisters and I have made it a tradition to get together and watch Hocus Pocus. This is one of the most magical movies you will come across. I've loved it since I was thirteen, and love it just as much now.

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker,and Kathy Najimy play witches called the Sanderson sisters, They give three, very funny, over the top performances in this over looked comedy.

Three centuries ago in colonial America, the Sanderson sisters practiced witchcraft, much to the consternation of their neighbors who apparently gave them wide berth. Unfortunately, growing old and haggard, they needed to rejuvenate themselves by inhaling the life force of a child. So, they lured a neighboring child, into their cottage. Her brother tried to save her from her fate, but was unable to do so before he was discovered and turned into a black cat for all eternity.

The three witches breathed in Emily's life force, with dire consequences for Emily, but the witches themselves turned more youthful thanks to Emily's life force. The townsfolk convene upon the cottage and capture the witches, whom they arrange to hang, but not before the witches cast a spell that is to have future ramifications.

Cut to present day America. It is Halloween. Two teens and one of the teen's little sister break into the witches' cottage, which is still standing as a sort of historical museum. One of the teens does something which brings the witches back, and all hell breaks loose. Just sit back and let the laughs begin. What happens is quite funny, as the witches are hilarious. This is entertainment, pure and simple. What you see, is what you get.

The 1980s had a lot of supernatural comedies, and "Hocus Pocus" is one of the flimsier examples of the genre. While the script is about as lackluster as it comes, the actors keep up a pretty steady stream of pyrotechnic wire-fu and slapstick prankery. And Ching-Ying Lam knocks the whole thing up another notch.

A troupe of wandering actors come to a theatre in a large town, and delight the locals with their tales of ghosts, gods and battles. Behind the scenes, there's a power struggle going on between two bright young actors, and a bunch of young men playing ghostly pranks on each other.

What they don't realize is that there's a REAL ghost (Yuet Sang Chin) causing mischief backstage. So the troupe's ghost expert, Master Sheng (Ching-Ying Lam) has to come up with a way to get the ghost to go away -- except that after they satisfy the mischievous ghost, they attract a malevolent one instead!

The first half of "Hocus Pocus" frankly seems pretty directionless, with lots of drunk actors playing jokes, acrobatic shows, and the ghost causing mischief. Fortunately the plot gets moving after that, with some excellent "hauntings" and a climactic battle with the malevolent spirit. It doesn't hurt that the combatants are in full supernatural dress, either.

The dialogue tends to be rather lackluster, although that may be the fault of the translators rather than the scriptwriter -- the subtitles are very awkward. To compensate for that, the filmmakers threw in lots of slapstick -- people walking into walls, tripping over spooks, floating in the air, and the occasional bit of toilet humor.

Ching-Ying Lam hadn't yet made "Mr. Vampire" when this movie was made, but he does more or less the same job -- he's the capable, level-headed sage, who is surrounded by idiots and spooks. And his presence is enough to knock the production up a notch. The other actors are capable, including Yuet Sang Chin, although none of the other characters are really fleshed out.

"Hocus Pocus" is a pleasant ghost story, lightweight and a bit slow, but still worth watching for people who like a little comedy with their hauntings.
