This dark fantasy-adventure borrows elements from Evangelion and Gasaraki and presents them in the style of Lain. Kyosuke Date's life becomes a waking nightmare as he discovers that his mother was murdered, he is a powerful mutant, and fragments of his sister's soul have become humanlike creatures called "Flickers." The Flickers are mercilessly hunted by the cruel vice president of an infinitely powerful conglomerate, the Kirihara Group. Kyosuke takes up with the sardonic Shiro Mibu, the sworn enemy of the Kirihara, and is soon battling giant robots and screeching maniacs. Series director Akiyuki Shinbo uses all the latest tricks: rapid-fire editing, weird colors (including blood-red frames), repeated close-ups of crosses and other objects, still frames juxtaposed with battle sequences, etc. But these flashy visuals can't disguise the slightness of the familiar story. Rated 16 Up: Considerable violence, grotesque imagery, profanity, alcohol and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

4 out of 5 stars Pardon Me, But There's a Knife In My Back.......2004-10-14

Kyosuke Date is not a happy camper. Frankly he's justified in his rage. When we first meet him he's being stabbed in the back by his mother, who then dies. The second time we see him he's being dug out of his grave in which he's been buried alive. No, it hasn't been a good weekend for Kyosuke. To complicate matters he finds that he has a long lost sister somewhere that evil companies are trying to find and he can now suddenly turn into a mutant demon thing that can kick major butt. Not that Kyosuke's thrilled about the transforming into a hideous demon thing, but compared to the rest of his weekend, that's a fairly good point.

The Monster Within doesn't show it's hand very much when it comes to the major plot of the series. All three episodes are mainly concerned with Kyosuke trying to figure out who his sister is and random characters of the sinister variety keep popping up and looking threatening. There's also Shiro, a helpfully homicidal mystery man who looks slightly like a mime who's joined up with Kyosuke.

At it's heart, Soultaker is a gothic horror piece inflected with a good bit of angst and bullets. Kyosuke didn't ask to be put in the position he's in, but he's going to have to live with that now and make the best of it. While it's a little confusing since the audience knows no more than the main character, The Soultaker still deserves a place in anime libraries.

5 out of 5 stars SOUL FRICKEN GOOD!.......2004-02-16

According to Amazon reviewer charles solomon, SOULTAKER is a derivative of anime series like gasaraki & evangelon (does every title have to be compared to evangelon? sheesh!) I strongly disagree!
instead ST adapts elements from the DEVILMAN/GUYVER/GENOCYBER/DETONATOR ORGUN/X-MEN genre but with a touch of DARIO ARGENTO italian horror.
the plot/storyline may be confusing at first, but it your'e patient and suspend your disbelief you'll eventually be taken in
it's refreshing to see something slightly different from the contemporaly anime shows. the colors have a "PSYCHO NOIR" kinda feel and a style simular to Mike Mignola's HELLBOY Comics. the action/pacing is more appealing than the aforementioned series GARSAKI and EVANGELION which to me are very slow and tedious at times. Soultaker also has one of the coolest intro themes. another classic from the legendary TATSUNOKO studios (gatchaman94,Casshan,Hurricane polymar)SOULTAKER is a must have addition for the scifi, anime, comicbook enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars Give Yourself Three Episodes.......2003-11-27

I was completely confused during the first episode. I too felt that scenes were random, weapons were too strange (Hospital's needles), and any reason for watching was not given. But I stuck through the first DVD and it all came together in the third episode. If you give yourself at least three episodes then you should be hooked into the plot; a plot that is sure to take you strange but interesting places.

1 out of 5 stars Erm....WHAT??.......2003-07-20

the soul taker to me is a running joke with my freinds. What WERE they thinking? The points of view were completely random, people were spitting out dialogue at random moments, it was like the characters were cast in stone, because trhey barely moved. AND WHAT IS WITH THE TEA??? I have never in my life seen an anime that people drank so much tea! The only anime that is more pointless then this was bey blade. One of the things that i really didn't get was..well there was a fight scene, then suddenly, SPARROWS?? There was randomly a flock of sparrows. And the artists, obviously had an odd obsession with stained glass windows because people were being dyed random colours. So my overall review is..DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!

5 out of 5 stars Confusing but great!.......2002-11-09

The very first episode might be very confusing, but the second and third ones are better because then the creators sorta half explain what happened in a weird twisted sort of way. Also, in the credits, I've recognized the Japanese voice actor of Duo from Gundam Wing and the American voice actor of Quatre of Gundam Wing(Kyosuke's voice). I love this series, the animation is great and it has a plotline that actually make a person think!

I've seen this movie on VHS years ago, I was very average, not much action or Horror at all, the story to the movie was interesting when you read it, but the actual movie is poor, and why is it that the DVD's of this Movie are so EXPENSIVE, your paying an Equivlent for 17 DVD's worth for this movie that I think doesn't rate very well. If I've mist something and there is a reason for the expensive price, Let me know.

        Cheers

5 out of 5 stars Kudos to the first and still the best 'death angel' movie!.......2006-04-04

Check out SOULTAKER to see the original "Death Angel" film that inspired the "Final Destination" series, plus "City of Angels", "Dead Like Me" and a dozen other wanna-be's. Leave it to some creative indies in Mobile, Alabama, to invent a new genre' of thriller that Hollywood has tried over-and-over again to copy. Be sure to watch the actual feature of "SOULTAKER" (at 97-minutes) instead of the abomination chop version of MST-3000 at 60-minutes that removed all of the plot and suspense in favor of comic possibilities of out-of-context moments. If you haven't seen the full feature of "SOULTAKER," you haven't seen the film, period.

5 out of 5 stars Where does that guy even keep his acorns?.......2005-11-08

Way longer than necessary, semi-plotless, terribly acted, bizarre and ultimately pointless. The comical appearance of the mother who looks like a huge mannish turtle and the Soultaker who looks like a catcher's mitt with eyes are the two highlights of the 'regular' version.

The MST3K version however is perhaps the zenith of all comedy. It is the first episode in the 10th season, and it offers up one of the juiciest morsels in cinema history: "nice yard. plenty of room to rock."

The MST3K plot parts can get a bit tedious, just like all the hospital running and bus themes in the later half of Soultaker, so I recommend fast forward the mystery science plot, enjoy some of those curly fries under the seat, and remember that Zep is never wrong.

        5 out of 5 stars Soultaker.......2005-09-08

I saw this movie on the Science Fiction Network and loved it! I even recorded the encore presentation the next day! I liked the eeriness and action of the four displaced souls racing to get to their bodies before the angel of death laid claims on them. I'd recommend this movie to anyone who like science fiction in general.

1 out of 5 stars Funny, but not deliberately so........2005-04-11

This hokum about souls trying to get back to their bodies while evading the angel of death, who is also an angel of mediocre acting, is good only in the way that old films like Deadly Mantis, Billy The Kid Vs. Dracula or Catwomen Of The Moon are good. It is sheer camp in every way right through the script, the story, the acting and the direction. Wait till you see the wooden acting of Joe Estevez and the huge-headed Robert Zdar. Calling their performances funny is an understatement; you have to see this to believe it, although I'm not sure it's worth the current price (as of this writing) of more than $20. There are many GREAT fantasy and SF movies you can buy now for less than $10, so why this junk is still so expensive is a bit of a mystery.

If you are looking for grade-B campy fun or are willing to suspend your disbelief for the most superstitious and ridiculous plot premises, then you'll enjoy this, otherwise, steer clear. If you enjoy films that are so bad they are funny, if possible you may wish to do yourself a favor and see the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode where they make fun of this movie. It's hilarious!

The cast of this 10-part TV series expands as more villains, "Flickers," and mutants, including Nakahara, whose cutesy design and manner clash with the overall gothic tone, join Kyosuke Date and the hard-bitten Shiro. In "Beyond the Human Realm," Kyosuke discovers he may not be the child of the parents who raised him, but the mutant offspring of scientist Tsubaki Tokisaka and the sinister director of the hospital, Dr. Richard Vincent. Kyosuke discusses these questions while battling enemies in both his human and monster forms. Director Akiyuki Shinbo throws in computer graphics, weird camera angles, dream sequences, monochromatic images, negative frames, crucifixes, and still artwork, but the story remains so minimal and the exposition so fragmented that each episode of Soultaker feels like more and more about less and less. Rated 16 Up: Graphic violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, profanity, tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

Episode 3 from the first DVD made me feel like this series was going to go somewhere. Unfortunately, this second DVD does not live up to that premise. The name of "Soul Crusher" was just too similar to the main character's "code name." And the explanation of where Kyosuke comes from was extremely too coincidental for my tastes.

Strangely enough though, I want to keep watching this series. The animation and colors create a darker mood than this viewer is used to from other animes. That's the difference that I enjoy. And I do want to find out where Runa is and if the mother is a "good" or "bad" person. How will she be dealt with? Although there are some negative aspects to this anime, I think you'll probably want to watch more after you've traveled this far.

The revelations pile up in this gothic psycho-adventure, as Kyosuke learns that he really is the son of scientist Tsubaki Tokisaka and hospital director Dr. Richard Vincent. He also learns that Shiro's sister, Yui Kirahara, who controls the all-powerful Kirahara Group, has been hunting Flickers to create the SoulAnubis. This composite monster is supposed to help her find Kyosuke's lost twin sister Runa and fulfill her contract with an unseen, Darth Vader-voiced creature. (Runa unconsciously created the Flickers as a self-defense mechanism.) The dramatic confrontation between Kyosuke and the SoulAnubis--who fights using a combination of violence and guilt trips--is awkwardly directed and hard to follow. Soul Hunter offers a staccato, state-of-the-art mixture of computer graphics, odd camera angles, flashbacks, monochromatic imagery, and still artwork, but the story feels like a retread. This DVD is not an actual movie, rather, it's an anime TV series! There isn't any Jon Stamos look alike nor is there a Tonya Harding look alike in this movie. What some of the commenters are referring to is an old movie, whereas this is an anime that may/may not share the same plot. The story in this anime series has many twists and turns. It's interesting!

Also, the cinematography isn't bad at all! Weird camera angles, colors-- everything you see is so vivid. I like this anime series because it keeps me on my toes and the fact that it's different from other anime in the way it's drawn and animated.

Revelations continue to pile up--although they obscure as much as they reveal--as this gothic adventure reaches its conclusion. Kyosuke visits the Moon and encounters his grandfather Daigo's brain, floating in a tank. Daigo conducted the secret experiments with the drug Beta Applicon that turned humans into mutants: he got the drug from the last member of an alien race who hoped to produce a mate. Kyosuke and his twin sister Runa are the ultimate products of those experiments, and during their climactic battle, they debate whether they're human or alien. These last episodes borrow heavily from Akira and Evangelion, but lack the dramatic punch of their models. Director Akiyuki Shinbo bombards the viewer with still artwork, negative frames, simulated slow motion, and images that suggest stained glass, but the visual flash can't disguise the thinness of the story. Rated 16 Up: Graphic violence, grotesque imagery, profanity, brief nudity, tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars A cool series comes to an explosive finale!.......2002-08-15

The fourth and final volume of this ultra-stylish action saga brings home the goods and then some. We get some freakish twists and turns, we get balls to the wall action, and we get an upbeat but not overly sappy ending. All the way through, an entertaining blend of sci-fi, sorcery, and human drama. This collection will hold a respected place right next to my copies of Outlaw Star, Evangelion, and Cowboy Bebop. Are you a man, or the devil?

This show is above average. As an action anime, it doesn't cut it, but the visuals and characters make this seris. The backgrounds and colors stand out and remind of an Art Nuvoue feel. The characters are unique, and even though you only know then for a short time, you tend to care about what happens to them.

The pacing is fast though. This is a show that needs to be watched a second time before the details are made clear, but it's still worth buying. This show spawned Komugi Nakahara, and if you have ever seen Nurse Witch Komugi, this is the precursor.
