Sultry Eliza Dushku runs for her life in a snug white tanktop, pursued by inbred backwoods cannibals in Wrong Turn. Dushku (Bring It On, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and a clump of other attractive young people (including Six Feet Under's Jeremy Sisto and Desmond Harrington of We Were Soldiers) get waylaid in the deep West Virginia wilds by a trio of grotesque mountain men, all given realistic ugliness by makeup artist Stan Winston (Interview with the Vampire, Terminator 2). Wrong Turn is the sort of movie where you know who's going to die by the order they appear in the credits, but fans of the inbred backwoods cannibals genre (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes) will find much to savor, particularly the scene in which Dushku and Harrington are trapped under a squalid bed while the inbred backwoods cannibals prepare one of their friends for dinner. Grisly. --Bret Fetzer

Description

An indescribable nightmare begins when a group of young friends is stranded on an isolated road deep in the Appalachian hills of West Virginia, with no hope of rescue. Desperate and fearing for their lives, the horror surges as they find themselves relentlessly pursued by a force of evil beyond their imagination! Featuring a hip ensemble of up-and-coming young stars, this blood-curdling epic is a shock-a-minute horror rush that will leave you screaming for more!

4 out of 5 stars ONE WRONG TURN , ONE NASTY MOVIE!!.......2007-09-05

see, these are the reasons you stay away from the woods, the mountains, the backwood town, places you don't know where the hell they're going. one wrong turn might just be one dead end. a young hot group of people, inbred monsters, missing hikers, and nowhere near civilization can make for a very interesting horror flick. not to mention it hits close to reality. you know there's just some kind of stuff like this in the world somewhere. this group gets stranded, they go out to find some help, instead they find a few cannibals. now they have to run for their lives, all of them not making it of course. good story, nice thrills, good actors. eliza dushku, she's a bad girl in this flick. i give her respect, and desmond harrington, man that boy does his thing here. my hero. he manages to keep the light on him. and jeremy sisto, no i didn't like his ending. his acting was good, as always, but he didn't have to go out like that. other than that, enjoyed it.

4 out of 5 stars West Virginia, Mountain MomaTake me home, country roads!!.......2007-08-03

Does West Virginia have a Department of Tourism? If they do, are they aware of this film? Is this just an example of some good ol' boys from West Virginny having some fun? No, but this film delivers on what it advertises. It is fun though predictable. Sure you can pick out who is going to get killed and probably in what order. Yes, this plot has been done before. Yup, we've seen the same characters played by different actors in dozens (well quite a few) other films. Still, this film has some thrills, some scares, some serious blood letting and some real creepy folk you don't want to meet up with. And that scene where the SUV gets hauled up to the cabin and the couple are hiding under the bed...Whoa, momma. They were a lot stronger than I would have been in that situation. Not bad acting either. Fans of this type of movie should be satisfied.

4 out of 5 stars Think Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Deliverance!!!.......2007-07-20

And in a NUTshell that is wut you have folks. Iz so crazy when a plot of this magnitude is dumbed down to the point of idiocy! Crazy h0rny teens get lost in woods then chased by deformed mutants who hail from Mississippi or sumthin. wut can I say for you to realize that you have to have this movie in your collection? I will say Eliza Dushku is great actress and is well done in the film. Some parts not realistic but what do you expect when dealing with people from the backwoods of Appalachian stuff.

5 out of 5 stars So it's really true what they say about Virginia.......2007-07-20

This movie is sooo great. I still will throw it in the dvd player time to time because it is just that awesome. If you are a horror fan and this little gem slipped by you, rent it, no don't rent it, buy it now. I can not wait for Wrong Turn 2 to come out!!!

5 out of 5 stars Mutant Inbred Cannibals= Bliss........2007-03-14

Description

Suspense as startling as a strangled scream! This is it, the defining motion picture in all of "film noir," written by Academy Award-nominee Martin Goldsmith (The Narrow Margin) and directed by legendary B-movie maker Edgar G. Ulmer (Daughter of Dr. Jekyll, The Black Cat). Tom Neal (The Brute Man, The Pride of the Yankees), handsome 1940's leading man, brings to thrilling life a down-on-his-luck nightclub performer who takes one wrong turn and picks up the meanest femme fatale in all of "noir," played to perfection by the incomparable Ann Savage (The Dark Horse, The Spider) in one of the most powerful and riveting performances ever recorded on celluloid.

5 out of 5 stars Detour.......2007-06-21

Made by a Poverty Row studio in just six days, this cynical, acid-tongued noir exemplified what a skilled director like Ulmer could do on a shoestring budget. Narrated by Neal, whose weary voice is that of a man recounting a terrible nightmare, "Detour" wallows in grim fatalism and sports a wildly venomous turn by Savage, as the castrating vixen who blackmails Al into a seedy get-rich scheme. Crisp pacing, rabid dialogue, and on-the-fly camerawork make this disturbing and fascinating "Detour" well worth taking.

4 out of 5 stars Boy meets girl, ala Chandler.........2007-01-25

Wow, this is a tough, gritty film. It deserves every good word that has been ever printed about it. Since the other reviews cover the plot and style, all I have to say is that what makes this movie great for me is that it has a quality similar to a Greek tradgedy. Is it the woman or a weakness in himself that dooms him? You can see the hero's doom rushing to inevitably meet him,and he rushing to meet it,yet you hope he can somehow avoid it.Will he? That's the question that keeps you nailed to your seat. And the ending, it's right up there with the ending to the Paul Muni film "I am a Fugitive from the Chain Gang".

4 out of 5 stars A chilling movie!.......2006-12-13

Those of you who've read other reviews already know the plot. It won't be rehashed here.

I'd like to post some thoughts on this drama. Only one other reviewer has offered an alternate solution, viz., that Al is really a murderer who's giving us an unbelievable story. I quite agree with him.

Al's account of both deaths aren't believable; one death, while possible, is unlikely, while the other one is flat out ridiculous. It makes more sense to me that Al's trying to convince the audience with the tale he's planning to give to the police. I'm sorry, Al, but it won't do; I'd vote to convict you.

Al's account of Vera's character is very believable, though. One really has to see Ann Savage's portrayal of Vera to believe it. What an arch-*itch she is! Maybe the most evil woman to ever hit the screen. She'll make your skin crawl. The movie's worth buying just to see this performance, especially the scene in the car where she turns on him. Villany personified! It's easy to see why he "killed" her--if he did. You decide.

A couple of plot holes exist. Vera tries to get Al into some money-making schemes that wouldn't really work, from a legal standpoint--even in 1945. Moreover, the first death (supposedly from natural causes [but not really]) would have easily been detected through an autopsy; the victim is seen taking what is presumably heart medication, which would have been found in the glove department.

One point nobody's pointed out: at the end, one isn't sure whether Al's actually being picked up by the police, or if he's just daydreaming/visualizing the scene where he's actually is. This isn't really a plot hole, though, merely an ambiguity.

An interesting tidbit: even in 1945, there were inspection stations in California--"Do you have fruits, vegetables, or livestock?" Another one--evidently, in those days, driver's licenses only contained a description, not a picture.

The print I saw on TCM is in very poor condition. The dialogue is sometimes inaudible. In some of the early scenes, the picture is badly blurred. A couple of times, definite signs of nitrate decomposition are noticed.(The print has those spots in the frame that are the sign of this decomposition; it looks like moldy cheese or something.) In the scene in the car, while Vera and Al are talking, frames and dialogue are actually missing. Presumably, those frames had decomposed too much to be used. It makes the viewer realize that, sadly, tons of films are in desperate need of restoration.

4 stars. I only docked one point for the poor quality of the print.

See the movie; you won't regret it.

3 out of 5 stars OK apart from one actor.......2007-07-03

Anyone else get annoyed by the really bad acting from the Eminem wannabe in this film - I would kill him myself if I was his mate in the film, for a low budget indie flick it was ok and would get 4 stars if the dud actor was deleted from it

    2 out of 5 stars I am a B horror flick fan, but..........2007-03-26

I thought that this movie fell short of even B horror flick standards. I did like the scenic shots of the film but the dialog and the "mutants" of this film didn't really hold my attention. The "mutants" were not even mutants at all. They looked like everyday people that you would see on the street. Well, they didn't look disfigured is what I mean. The guy that was acting like he was part of the "Rap Culture" was the most irritating of them all. I really wanted to like this movie, but I am sorry that I didn't. I don't recommend this movie to anyone. Even those B horror fans.

4 out of 5 stars When Shortcuts go Long.......2007-01-26

A group of LA youth are in a mobile home attend a rave in the desert. On the way back to the city, the driver decides to take a short cut so that he can swing by a ploy of peyote and make some quick money. At a rest stop just before their destination they are warned to stay away by the strange clerk. Of course if they listened there wouldn't be a movie. So, on a back road they get stuck and cannot get a phone connection. While the driver heads back to the rest stop to borrow a phone, another pair head into the high ground to try and get a signal.

Now that they have split up the terror begins. Someone or something is in the desert and wants them dead. Soon the deaths begin and the survivors band together. They know a way out if they can just get a few free moments to get the RV unstuck. The local hills are home to a clan of violent cannibals. They may have a connection with the peyote but they definitely have something that can throw them into a berserker rage. But as vicious and violent as they may be, the cannibals can be out-thought and that is what the survivors try to do. The ending is different than one would expect but works well and keeps the film on the fresh side.

Although this is often compared to The Hills Have Eyes it only has superficial similarities. While the cannibals will attack people stuck in the desert they don't seem to orchestrate their getting stuck. There is some nudity, plenty of violence, and a truly annoying character trying to be a gangster rapper. All in all it is not as cheap as it could be and remains a fairly original treatment of a classic theme. Much of the movie centers around the youths trying to overcome their predicament and less on the slaughter of the innocents. Better than I expected. Check it out.

    4 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Horror/Comedy.......2006-10-14

This movie has a lot in it that I usually despise, like cliched plot, almost non-existent actors, and desert dwelling psychos. How many times have we seen that particular movie. However, Steve Taylor created a movie that really worked for me, even though it had so many of the things that I hate. The part that worked best for me were the characters in the van. They were some of the most obnoxious people I'd seen in a while in a movie and I found myself rooting for the desert psychos. This movie really held my interest and kept me laughing, even while the blood was spilling. It's definitely worth the $10.

1 out of 5 stars Ouch! I blew it taking a chance on this film........2006-09-06

Before I slice and dice, I think it's important to know I approach reviewing from my standpoint. I don't label a movie as lousy for everyone, it's just my take, and I hope people who read my reviews will know from what I've said if their take on things is similar to mine or not, and decide from there where to go.

I'm impressed by the long, positive review for this film. It's the perfect example of how something can be viewed very differently by various people. My take was more or less the opposite. Incidentally, I like a great deal of what I'd characterize as the contemporary B-movie, meaning movies a lot of others thought really sucked! This one, however....

Some spoilers ahead, but nothing you haven't read in other reviews (if you have).

What I liked? There were two or three beautiful shots of clouds, and some of the rugged landscape looked great. Otherwise, the glaring yellowish tint to most of the movie bugged me. It could have been artsy, but it didn't work for me.

Characters. I thought they were all weak and boring, with one exception (more later). I was offended by the opening scene, in which two teen "lesbians" get the hook, and the inane way they reacted to events once things started going wrong put me off.

I'm way away from the age group of the kids portrayed in the film, but I see and hear people in their age group frequently enough (and I'm in California -- they're supposed to be from the L.A. area) that these kids appeared to have nothing in common with what I've experienced. The "rave" looked hokey. The white kid who talked like he was from the 'hood was excruciatingly annoying, in great part because I can't imagine anyone behaving the way he did and not getting the stuffing kicked out of him by anyone within earshot! Now, the fact that these kids are all white and appear to come from the same background could -- at a stretch -- allow for the toleration of his antics, but once back in L.A. this kid would be stomped like a bug as soon as he opened his mouth.

Similarly to their background, they were all about equally vacuous, and the attempts to make them feel "real" (so I'd sympathize with them) were sad. Even sadder, apart from the white kid from the 'hood, I didn't care enough about them that I even wanted them dead!

The other players -- the gas station attendant, the "cannibals" -- looked and acted even more dismally than the kids.

As far as story goes, it was transparently a zero-budget rip off of The Hills Have Eyes. Picture THHE but take away everything and substitute what I've described and that's what I got out of it.

I purchased this along with an assortment of movies of this ilk, and I bothered to write this review only because it stood out so sharply from the rest, and others of this type, in a negative way. Nevertheless, I know plenty of people will like it; I hope I've saved the $10 for those who wouldn't.

Like many public-domain DVD sets, this six-disc set compiles a handful of well-liked features from one genre--in this case, a quintet of venerable '40s noir. Where Questar's box exceeds expectations is on its sixth disc, which is chock full of extras that make the set a must-have for viewers looking for a crash course in Hollywood thrillers. The lineup of flicks is solid--Rudolph Mate's D.O.A., in which Edmond O'Brien must find out who has poisoned him; Edgar G. Ulmer's minimalist Detour, which pits desperate Tom Neal against feral Ann Savage; Orson Welles's The Stranger (which is technically more suspense than noir), in which his Nazi-turned professor locks horns with Edward G. Robinson--who's also featured in Fritz Lang's moody Scarlet Street. The set is rounded out by the lesser-known Killer Bait, and if the picture quality isn't as crystal-clear as on major studio releases, the supplemental features more than make up for it. Disc 6 features two swell featurettes, one on the genre itself and the other on its predatory ladies, as well as a color gallery of poster art and a terrific compilation of trailers for such films as Bullets or Ballots and The Postman Always Rings Twice. For noir first-timers, this set is a killer place to start. --Paul Gaita

    Description

Lights out! Questar presents five killer examples of film noir, the shadow-drenched genre of middle-class crime, anxiety, and desperation that blackened American movie screens in the 40's and 50's. Each of these thrillers comes in a crisp archival print on a separate DVD, which includes riveting bonus features on some of the people and ideas behind this darkest—and most enduringly popular—of all movie genres. Disc One: D.O.A. - On vacation from his clinging girlfriend, a complacent accountant (Edmund O'Brien) unknowingly swallows a drink spiked with radioactive poison and then spends the last desperate hours of his life trying to find out who "killed" him—and why. Directed by Rudolph Mate. Disc Two: Detour - Hitchhiking across the country to reunite with his girlfriend, the film's "hero" encounters two sinister characters—one of them a venomous, blackmailing woman whom he "accidentally" murders. Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer. Disc Three: The Stranger - Orson Welles directs and stars in this thriller about a monstrous Nazi official who's hiding out as a small-town American college professor. A war crimes detective turns up determined to expose him—even if it means endangering the Nazi's innocent wife. Disc Four: Scarlet Street - Homely, henpecked Chris Cross (Edward G. Robinson) leads an honorable, if tedious, middle-class life until he falls madly in love with the dangerously seductive young Kitty (Joan Bennett). Directed by Fritz Lang. Disc Five: Killer Bait - A bickering couple find a bag of money in the back seat of their car. The husband wants to turn the illicit cash in, but his money-hungry wife has a different idea—and she'll do anything to realize it. Directed by Byron Haskin. Disc 6: SPECIAL FEATURES - Black and Blue: The History of Noir; Hot-Blooded and Cold-Hearted: The Dames of Film Noir; Classic Lines Quiz; Over 35 Film Noir Trailers including Double Indemnity, 1944, Reservoir Dogs, 1992, Sunset Blvd, 1950...

4 out of 5 stars 5 film noir collections compared.......2005-06-11

This is mainly a contents listing of 5 box sets of film-noir collections. Quality is excellent for the Warner box--the films are not public domain and were remastered. The four other collections are of public-domain films, some of which were fixed up somewhat. Film quality is variable (dropouts, scratches, cropped images, fuzziness, low contrast). Most films are quite watchable, and there are some very good versions, especially if low price is considered (e.g., Hitch-hiker--only on CLA9). However, there are some marginal issues (e.g., Red house--only on FN10) and some extremely bad issues (e.g., Man who cheated himself--only on CLA9).

    Ratings based on video-audio quality and emphasizing value for money: 5* = CLA1; 4* = CLA9, KIL5, MY10; 3* = FN10

    COLLECTIONS--SUMMARY:
*** CLA1 = Film noir classic collection (Warner, 2004) [5 movies, 1944-50] $49.95 list. Extras: 5 film commentaries; 1 introduction; 2 trailers. Note: Volume 2 with 5 more noir films will appear in 7/05.
*** CLA9 = Classic film noir (St. Clair, 2005) [9 movies, 1946-53] $9.95 list. Extras: poster gallery (in color); featurette (About film noir, TT5:00); 7 trailers (TT16:00)
    *** FN10 = Film noir: 10 movies (Brentwood, 2004) [10 movies, 1934!, 1945-52] $19.95 list. Extras: 40 trailers (4/disk)
*** KIL5 = 5 film noir killer classics (Questar, 2004) [5 movies, 1945-49] $29.95 list. Extras: The posters of film noir (in color, TT3:50); 2 featurettes (What is film noir?, TT13:00; Femme fatale, TT7:53); 38 Film noir trailers (TT1.58:07)
    *** MY10 = Mystery classics: 50 movie pack (Treeline, 2004) [10 film noir movies, 1945-54, 40 other movies, 1931-52] $34.95 list. Extras: none

    4 out of 5 stars "Detour " to England?.......2005-02-28

Be warned: "Detour" is fine film noir, but this version, at least the one I bought, has an apparent film reversal in the early hitchhiking scenes, which show the cars' drivers on the right side! Don't know how this got through. In other sections of the film, there are brief but noticeable lapses in lighting and sound quality. A good movie, but these inconsistencies in film quality are annoying at the least. This is an inexpensive set for what you get, but what you get may be less than you expect. Have since watched "Killer Bait" and "Scarlet Street" and give them both good marks, despite the lesser quality of "Scarlet Street" noted by earlier reviewers.

5 out of 5 stars A bit of gold in black and white........2004-08-24

A very worthwhile package for the money. All the movies are well-known and good examples of the genre, the copies are reasonable except, as another reviewer has mentioned, 'Scarlet Street' which has a rather soft focus. The packaging graphics have had some thought put into them, too. Disc six with the Extra Features is interesting and it includes the following:
    1. A thirteen minute documentary (narrated by silver throated Ed Ragozzino) 'What is Film Noir', not a bad summing up of the style.
    2. 'Femme Fatale - The Noir Dame', a seven minute wrap-up of the ladies, the commentary is snowing clichés after a few seconds though.
    3. 'Film Noir Trailers', at seventy-eight minutes, this was one reason I bought the package though it has to be said it is rather wide ranging because it includes, for example, 'Citizen Kane' and 'Magnificent Ambersons', hardly noir!
    4. 'The Posters of Film Noir', a good selection of thirty or so posters that the pause button was made for.

So, a good deal for the price.

4 out of 5 stars OK Transfers, but the extras are nice.......2004-07-06

The bonus disc has over 40 trailers for B&W Noirs and suspense films. In addition, some great film noir movie posters.

Also, the box set is set up nice. Looks great. Not to shabby for a public domain movie release.

All the transfers (except Scarlet Street) look fine. They're tinted blueish and yellow sometimes. Apparently, the films were pieced together from different sources. It's fairly seemless, though.

Scarlet Street still looks horrible. What a shame. That's the best film in this boxed set. Worth the price.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly Crisp.............2004-06-29

The liner notes say that these are "...crisp, archival prints". Well, not exactly. This set is pretty good, but not fantastic. The authoring leaves some pixellation and blotchiness in the darker scenes. Also, they have tinted some of the scenes grey. I guess that was to try and cover up some fading. "D.O.A." is pretty good, but a clearer version is the one put out by Image Entertainment. This set does contain the best and most complete version of "DETOUR" that i have seen, although it still needs more restoration (Criterion, can you hear me?). I think "THE STRANGER" looks OK, but ROAN GROUP puts out a better disc of it. Concerning "SCARLET STREET", it looks about as good as what anyone else is putting out. I guess no one has been able to find a nice, clean, fine grain print of this movie yet. The movie "KILLER BAIT" is also known as "TOO LATE FOR TEARS" and it looks better in this set than the "TEARS" disc that Image puts out. As for content, all of these movies are good ones.

1 out of 5 stars Not enough money to stretch into modern day horror movie..........2005-05-12

The storyline was pretty good, but the acting was sub-par. In the end, this thing falls well below Jeepers Creepers or the new "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". I think with some better actors and production expertise they could have made this much more commercially successful. Instead we get a scary horror/teens lost/chased by bogeyman scenario that falls into the B-grade movie market and is all but forgotten 5 years from now, if in fact it was ever remembered at all. If you like Movies like this then I suggest Jeepers Creepers and The Cabin.
