First sequels are the true test of an enduring movie franchise, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets passes with flying colors. Expanding upon the lavish sets, special effects, and grand adventure of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry involves a darker, more malevolent tale (parents with younger children beware), beginning with the petrified bodies of several Hogwarts students and magical clues leading Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) to a 50-year-old mystery in the monster-laden Chamber of Secrets. House elves, squealing mandrakes, giant spiders, and venomous serpents populate this loyal adaptation (by Sorcerer's Stone director Chris Columbus and screenwriter Steve Kloves), and Kenneth Branagh delightfully tops the supreme supporting cast as the vainglorious charlatan Gilderoy Lockhart (be sure to view past the credits for a visual punchline at Lockhart's expense). At 161 minutes, the film suffers from lack of depth and uneven pacing, and John Williams' score mostly reprises established themes. The young, fast-growing cast offers ample compensation, however, as does the late Richard Harris in his final screen appearance as Professor Albus Dumbledore. Brimming with cleverness, wonderment, and big-budget splendor, Chamber honors the legacy of J.K. Rowling's novels. --Jeff Shannon

This movie too was wonderful. Full of magic, and excitement through and through. These movies are a must see by all ages. I've read all the books and I have been so enjoying the movies. My grand children love them too. Great work to jk rowlings for a job well done. Hate to see the books come to an end, but so worth every penny to read and see movies.
Thanks to jk rowlings for giving us these great treasures to keep and enjoy over and over.

This was a pretty fun film. I liked it better than the first one and the acting definetely improved in regards to the younger adults. The story was pretty interesting and it follows the book pretty nicely which was surprising. All in all, if you are a HP fan, you will love this film.

1 out of 5 stars A series of incidents without any real storytelling.......2007-08-20

I can't understand the fascination with Potter! First of all, I took two Children's Literature courses in college when I was studying to be an English teacher, and was forced to read the first book. I never read it because I couldn't make it through the first page as it was the most boring page of words I'd ever read before. During the open-book test on the book, because I was FORCED TO, I painfully read through almost the entire book in one sitting in order to come up with the answers, this is how ridiculously easy the book is to read. I was horrified that I didn't like the book either, even after I did read it during testing; I was horrified because like another reviewer said: "I don't quite understand this Harry Potter phenomenon." You see, that makes me believe that either I'm crazy and everyone else is sane, or that I'm sane and everyone else is crazy! Anyhow, when I was young we didn't read books this stupid. Really. Even if they were childrens' books, we read classics, like Alice in Wonderland, which is much more complex, imaginative, and meaningful. To sum up, I did watch the first film and I didn't think it was bad; however, this one really bored me, especially near the end. I could not force myself to watch the ending, even after wasting time by watching most of it to begin with! I commented to my husband that the movie seemed to be one series of "surprises" and "coincidences" that kept it going, no real plot, just a series of occurences. I can't say this is storytelling, although to some it may be -- it's cheap storytelling, not masterful in the least, and it's hardly got any redeeming qualities to it. I'm just sorry in the end that such stuff is being revered by children today when great classics are being ignored.

Prejudice and acceptance clash in Halloweentown High when Marnie (Kimberly J. Brown) attempts to prove that humans and the supernatural inhabitants of Halloweentown can peacefully co-exist in the mortal world. Thanks to a slip of the tongue, Marnie's brainstorm to sponsor a high school exchange student program between Halloweentown and her own high school quickly turns into a battle to save the Cromwell family's magical powers and keep the portal between worlds open. An already arduous undertaking becomes even more difficult when the supposedly fictional Knight of the Iron Dagger starts haunting the Halloweentown exchange students right in the mortal world. In the end, it is the common mortals who, by demonstrating tolerance and a commitment to equality, possess the power to save the Cromwells' magic and the entire human world. This third movie in the Halloweentown trilogy focuses primarily on Marnie. Aggie (Debbie Reynolds), Gwen (Judith Hoag) and the other Cromwell family members are secondary characters with less prominent roles than in the previous two productions. Makeup and costuming is top rate in this Disney Channel original movie, the trolls and ogres are not too scary, and bonus games and activities are plentiful. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Respectable Sequel.......2007-09-11

The one thing that stands out about this series is its consistency. This sequel fits in logically and is well written for this type of Disney fare. The only part that was annoying was the lack of plot for the youngest child, Sophie. She was certainly left out of the action.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Halloween Movie for all.......2007-08-27

I am a fan of the whole Halloweentown series, but this particular movie is probably the best for a varied audience. My children range in ages: 8, 11 and 15. The first two movies have scenes that are a little too intense for my 8 year old daughter. Halloweentown High has enough "monsters" to make it exciting for my 11 year old son and 15 year old daughter, but nothing too creepy for the 8 year old to handle. The story (the attempt to keep those who are different from being descriminated against) has a very good message as well.

In addition to being a perfect Halloween movie for the whole family, the "extras" section has some terrific ideas for Halloween party games. I definitely recommend this move - and Amazon offers it at a great price.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids and adults too!.......2007-07-22

If you like to watch with your kids then this is a sure fire hit. Story is entertaining and the actors are great. Plus to see Debbie Reynolds in this type of role is interesting too.The whole series is a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars I love this movie .......2007-03-13

Doesn't have to be audited by an adult before letting your child watch. It is a cute movie about a family that has a problem--- the females are witches. This movie is later on in the series and follows a budding witch into high school. Really cute for adults too.

The innate connection between twins is a strange but very real phenomenon, so it's no surprise that when 21-year old twins Camryn (Tamera Mowry) and Alex (Tia Mowry) bump into one other in a clothing shop, they feel an instant connection with one another even though they were separated at birth. What is a surprise is that the two girls are really powerful witches from another dimension who were spirited away to escape the destructive force known as the "Darkness." Kept safe for the last 21 years by two quirky protectors Karsh and Ileana, the girls are now destined to combine their respective gifts of sight and knowing with their newly discovered magical powers in order to save their own mother and her entire dimension from the invading Darkness. The biggest difficulties for the girls prove to be learning to trust in themselves and their powers, agreeing upon their combined role in the fight, and focusing their powers against the Darkness. Based on the book The Power of Two, this 86-minute Disney Channel Original Movie features a convincing and enthusiastic performance by Disney Channel's Sister, Sister stars Tia and Tamara Mowry and some other-worldly special effects. Bonus features include brief behind the scenes commentary by Tia and Tamara Mowry, a never-before-seen alternate ending, and an interactive fortune-telling game. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

1 out of 5 stars Twitches Gave Me A Twitch.......2007-09-11

Loosely based on a book series by the same name, TWITCHES tells the story of twins Alex and Camryn, separated at birth by their protectors, who took them away to another dimension due to a war between Coventry and The Darkness. The sisters meet each other in about the same way as in SISTER, SISTER (and pretty much the same as every twins-separated-at-birth movie). Once they meet, we're forced to watch a whole series of annoying scenes where vapid, bubbly Camryn screeches about things in a high-pitched voice while her decidedly more sane sister rolls her eyes. Mainly, she's screeching about the twins' newfound magical powers, which, unlike those in better written fantasy stories, seem to be without bounds. The twins seem to just be able to touch each other's hands, recite cheesy rhyming phrases, and make just about anything happen (with terrible special effects, of course). Eventually of course, they have to stop spilling soda on people and making them wear tutus so they can find the great battle they were born to fight, against The Darkness. The Darkness is probably the worst bad guy I've ever witnessed; it's basically just a cloud of black and red smoky stuff that occasionally forms the shape of large scary hands that can grab you. Even better, once the twins face The Darkness and defeat it (with *LOVE* of course!), everyone who was previously captured by the darkness magically returns to life! Hurray! Rainbows and sunshine for everyone! In short, if you like magic and witches and sister, watch CHARMED instead. This movie is terrible.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter can't watch this movie enough!.......2007-07-19

I've always admired these twins. Tia & Tamera Mowry. They are two classy ladies. I bought this movie for my daughter after seeing it on Disney channel. She is only 6 years old. At first I thought it was a bit too scary at first. She didn't have a problem with it. She says that it's her all time favorite movie.

1 out of 5 stars Better to read the books.......2007-02-17

So poorly did the movie portray these excellent books that my daughter and I were unable to even watch the entire movie. I would recomend ignoring the movie and buying the books instead.

3 out of 5 stars Go twitches, go twitches.......2007-01-29

I am a fan of Disney Movies such as this; although this one didn't please me as much as others. The special effects were on average, low quality and the storyline was a bit lame.

5 out of 5 stars Great family movie!.......2007-01-12

I saw this movie for the forst time on TV and loved it. The bonus features are great too.

This follow-up to Warlock boasts more sophisticated visual effects, slicker production values, and bigger (and bloodier) action, but fans of the original's dry wit and tight story may be disappointed. It's really more a rehash than a sequel. The Devil is up to his old tricks again, sending his favorite son (the title character) on a mission to recover six runes--ancient stones that will allow His Satanic Majesty to escape Hell and once again walk the Earth. Leading the forces of good are a group of modern-day druids and a pair of teenage lovers who have no idea they've been selected to save the world. There are some genuinely spooky moments, a few laughs, and some nice visual touches, but the scattershot script keeps throwing out one cool idea after another, hoping something sticks. On the other hand, if watching Julian Sands writhe on the ground spewing black blood sounds like a good time, this may be just the ticket. Gremlins star Zach Galligan has a cameo (as the boyfriend of the Warlock's mom!) --Geof Miller

4 out of 5 stars Wacky Magic Fun.......2004-11-02

I really enjoyed this movie. It's goofy and the Druids vs. the Warlock history is a bit silly but overall quite enjoyable. It has better pacing than the first film and seems less disjointed even though the Warlock's search for the runestones is told in a series of little vignette's. Some of the "druid training" scenes are quite beautiful with very creative direction to attain subtle effects which nicely contrast the Warlock's macabre magic.

As I said before the story is a little silly but I liked it better than the witch-hunter sent through time story of the first film and the forgettable kids in a haunted house approach of the third.

3 out of 5 stars ANTHONY HICKOX DOES IT AGAIN!.......2004-07-16

Warlock:The Armageddon is an enjoyable watch. I bought this DVD because 1.Anthony Hickox directed it. 2.Monika Schnarre has a small part in it. I hadn't seen it before when I purchased this film, but I enjoyed it. I love what Anthony Hickox did with this sequel. The special effects, a good cast. I love Paula Marshall (from 'Hellrasier 3)- what a talented and likeable actress. I got a thrill seeing Monika Schnarre again in a small part as a runway model.

I hope that anthony Hickox would make more films like this.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gothic Horror -- true to the word.......2007-08-07

I love these old Mexican Gothic Horror movies; so much style, substance, and they don't leave you feeling horrified afterwards due to feeling as if you've just wasted your time for a few hours watching them. This film, "The Witch's Mirror," really is another great gem. I loved the spooky scenes of sorcery and magic; the mad scientist theme is great too, even though I've never been a big fan of that sort of thing; the crisp black and white, quite baroque and even chiaroscuro in some ways, is sensational. This truly is a great Gothic horror film, and I am glad that Casanegra is getting these forgotten classics out there in such pristine beauty and form.

5 out of 5 stars Unheralded 60's Gothic Horror Classic from Mexico.......2007-08-02

When people think "Mexican Horror" over the top insane, poorly dubbed, high-camp movies featuring masked wrestlers come to mind. Not so with this flick. This is a well acted, directed, very cinematic, beautifully photographed and quite the graphic little low-budget shocker that's quite a lot of fun.

Since re-viewing this (this is perhaps the only flick that scared the bejezus out of me as a little kid who watched it last time decades ago in the 70's on a Saturday afternoon on "UHF" TV) recently, I concluded that this is really one of the many European "takes" on "Eyes Without a Face", a classic French horror film made a few years earlier. However, Eyes Without a Face really didn't contain any horror elements - it's a straight ahead story of an insane doctor who was obsessed with restoring the face to his daughter who was horribly disfigured in an accident.

See the parallels? Except here, the Mexicans took a look at that film and decided to add elements of occult to the proceedings. Rather than being a mishmash, The Witches Mirror is quite original and effective in its own right. I really love the elements of surrealism that appear through out the film, little scenes like that "thing" (what was that?) that dances in the witch's mirror through the fog in the very beginning of the film, and that bandaged mummy ghost-thingy who the witch converses with that is suspended on the wall mid-way through the proceedings.

The director, Chano Urueta, was a staple of Mexican cinema and later bacame a character actor who appeared in a shot in Mexico Sam Peckinpah film (mentioned in the "extras" on the DVD) - as a tribute perhaps? ...studied under Sergei Eisenstein in the 30's, and his skill is displayed here in spades.

The 1960 low-budget Mexican effects work "overreaches" and includes some obvious and unfortunate gaffes but by the time they show up at the end, this film has already won you over. They actually add in a way to the charm.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Gothic Chiller From Mexico.......2006-10-13

Wow!! Viewing this film was a real kick. Like another reviewer here I have seen and loved many of the old school gothic style horror films from Universal, Hammer, AIP, AMICUS and many of the early Italian horror films from Mario Bava and others. Well, I thought that I had seen just about all the genre had to offer and would probably never see anything new from this area of horror film again; for as the saying goes..."they just don't make films like that anymore". Fortunately I've been ignorant of Mexican horror cinema all these years. Oh sure I had heard about films from Mexico that featured masked wrestler heroes fighting vampire devil robots from Mars but I, quite ignorantly, thought that was about it for Mexican horror flicks. All I can say is I was wrong and am more than glad to admit it.

"The Witch's Mirror" is a worthy gothic horror film effort that fits quite snugly in among the old Hammer and Universal films. In fact it borrows quite liberally and shamelessly from many of those old classics. While watching it I kept seeing elements from all kinds of sources including: "Rebecca", "Frankenstein", "Mad Love", traditional ghost stories, revenge plots, etc. Now you might think that such a hodge podge could never work well together but director Chano Urueta pulls it together seamlessly, giving those of us who love this kind of thing an hour and a half of thrills and chills.

I'm not good at summarizing plots but here is a quote from the product description: "A poetic tale of madness and horror from director Chano Urueta. The Witch's Mirror is one of the landmark films of the Mexi-horror genre. A benevolent witch (Isabela Corona) enchants a magic mirror to protect her adopted daughter Elena (Dina de Marco) from her cruel husband (Armando Calvo). When the incantation fails and the girl is murdered, the witch vows revenge using every unholy principle of the supernatural that she can conjure" This barely does the story justice but to reveal more would, in my opinion, rob you of many of the joys I had of watching this film. I would just like to comment on how the film positively drips atmosphere. Director Chano Urueta had an excellent directorial style and he employs the black and white cinematography to good effect. And while the special effects don't always work when they do they are spot on and will raise a goose pimple or two even among many jaded horror fans. Also the film has a great music score as well and it reminded me of Bernard Herrmann at times.

In summary this is an excellent gothic period piece thriller and if you are looking for good old fashioned horror thrills you could do a lot worse than "The Witch's Mirror". This would be an excellent film to curl up with by your self or with someone you love on a chill October evening. So, I say go ahead and purchase it or rent it if you can and settle in for some good creepy fun.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Horror never gets old........2006-09-06

I vaguely remembered watching this movie as a child, so when I saw it on DVD I had to pick it up. There is something about black and white movies that never gets old. The movie is about a surgeon that murders his wife to marry another woman. The womans Godmother is a witch and foresees this, but she is told by the spirits that she can not stop what is already bound to happen. So she bows to help Elena seek revenge from beyond the grave. I watched the movie in spanish, but it also comes dubbed in english, and the dubbing is pretty good. If you are a fan of classic horror cinema, or horror in general, this is one you have got to pick up. It will be a worthy addition to any horror collection.

5 out of 5 stars Jack's Beanstalk.......2007-08-05

Probably not many people have seen this movie, but once you have - you will never forget it. A very unique version of Jack & the Beanstalk that I highly recommend viewing. Especially if you're a fan of the 1960s-70s Japanese after-school cartoons!

5 out of 5 stars Good old fashion animation! .......2007-06-27

I have loved this movie since I was a kid and it's good that it finally came out on DVD. Let's be real if you saw this animated version of "Jack and the Beanstalk" the Disney and other B versions are garbage! The songs are great and easy remember, it has a tween twist to it, so the language is not adult but rather closer to early adolescents. How often do you see a dog like Crosby that is so laid back and loyal? Crosby and Jack make this movie! So if you're sick of the current trends in Anime, take a look at an older version of Anime. There are plenty of entertaining songs for kids and lots of funny moments for the adults.

5 out of 5 stars Anime Jack and the Giant.......2007-05-13

I remember watching this as a kid back I don't know how many years ago and seeing it from time to time on cable when you had decent quality programming. Now it's back again for those who remember this version on DVD. Kinda makes me wish that various films from this era (i.e. - Animalympics) would make it to DVD to be preserved in a better format.

The storyline is basic,....not hard to follow but it is wierd here and there. The evil mother / witch (Heccuba) is almost like a robot with that human trait. I'm giving a spolier when her giant, ogre-like son, Tulip crushes her at the end. Certain scense and the musical score are almost Pink Floydian (ummm....Pink Freudian???? lol) here and there....but overall it is a great watch for the fans of this film as well as those who are young at heart. I've noticed some other people making comments and indicating that really young kids shouldn't watch it for it may be....well...too trippy. But that is done out of pure discretion.

However,...if you have watched this....and are a fan of it....get it. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful memories.......2007-05-13

I first saw this movie when my daughter was a young girl. I would rent it, and we would sit together and watch it over and over until I had to return it. Then one day I couldn't find the video. Years passed, and one day I happened to be thinking about it and decided to check Amazon. To my delight, they had it for sale. I purchased the DVD and surprised my daughter (now 24) with it. She was thrilled. We have both watched it several times already.

3 out of 5 stars In a word, bizarre!.......2007-03-29

This film stayed with me since childhood, and like the reviewer below, I couldn't find any mention of it on IMDB, Amazon or anyplace else. And now here it is, in all its DVD goodness - and what a thoroughly strange film it is, too. I couldn't believe how much of it came back to me as I watched - it must be 25 years since I saw it last.

This is a very strange take on the standard tale. Jack is an impulsive, impudent kid who has to learn not to be selfish, with a very funny dog who fancies himself a military man. A creepy, possibly kiddie-fiddling musician with an electric organ tricks Jack into buying the magic beans, which grow overnight in a gorgeous sequence. The giant is a hulking beast called Tulip, and his mother is an evil, normal-sized witch who treats him so badly you almost feel sorry for him. There's an enchanted Princess, people turned to mice, a talking harp, a golden chicken, and some paper cut-out people...

The songs are mostly terrible, and yet weirdly compelling - especially the Pink Floyd-ish music for climbing the beanstalk and the ghostly wedding song. "Are you happyyyy?" Many sequences in the film are surreal, even psychedelic, and there's a strange undercurrent of Freudian unease in the relations between Jack and the Giant and their harsh, controlling mothers. The animation is pretty good, with some very nice backgrounds. The Princess has a proto-anime look to her.

I'm not sure I can recommend this film to kids or not, to be honest. It's weird and unsettling, and there's a terrible scene early on where Jack recieves a lengthy beating with a broom. Then again, kids don't pick up on a lot of stuff that raises adult eyebrows. For anybody who vaguely remembers it or is into funky kid-vids, it's a good party video. Parents, you might want to watch it first before showing it to the kids. But hey, it didn't freak me out. Much.

SPOILER WARNING: The image of the giant smashing his wicked, emasculating mother and finding only clockwork inside has haunted me for years.

Witchcraft through the ages is explored with dark wit in this silent classic. Writer-director Benjamin Christensen uses a historical study of witchcraft as a jumping-off point for a fascinating film that is part science, part horror, and part social commentary. This Criterion edition uses a beautiful print, a rearrangement of music from the original Danish premiere, and the original Swedish intertitles (with subtitles). Goodies include commentary by Danish film scholar Casper Tybjerg, the option of watching a narrated version without intertitles, and test shots from the film. The test shots, in particular, give insight into the early filmmaking process, as when Christensen uses his own image to try out (and reject) a flying effect. This is a worthy edition to the collection of fans of horror films, silent films, and film in general. --Ali Davis

Description

Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath: Benjamin Christensen's legendary film uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the middle ages suffered the same hysteria as turn-of-the-century psychiatric patients. But the film itself is far from serious-instead it's a witches' brew of the scary, gross, and darkly humorous. The Criterion Collection is proud to present two versions of this genre-defying "documentary," for the first time ever on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars This movies has become a tradition.......2007-09-06

Once a year, every spring, the ladies in our community have what is called Goddess Weekend. And each and every year we watch this movie. Granted, there are factual and sometimes uneasy parts of this film, but I just have to say that because it has become 'campy' it's quite entertaining for all. Even with the subtitles.... even better when someone reads them aloud, this movie is actually fun and the symbolism is just darn funny. For instance, in one part the 'devil'.... your basic horned ugly entity, has the witches lined up to kiss his butt. And the makeup on the priests is just down right scary! I have the vhs but plan to purchase this dvd even though it is a little pricey, it's worth it to me and my friends. If you are hesitant to purchase this, get a group together and try to rent it before you spend the money. This film is not for everyone and shows some really ugly old crones.
One of my favorites!

5 out of 5 stars A documentary Michael Moore would've done back in the day exposing Witchcarft. Dvd special features below.......2007-08-08

This is not what I expected at all, from reading the back of the Criterion dvd you hear about Grave Robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic sabbath, so I'm thinking a horror movie. What i got was writer director Benjamin Christensen exposing witchcraft for what it really was, mental disorders. He does this first with some dark comedy which reminded me of Jeff Foxworthy's whole bit about you might be a redneck if, however here it's you might be a witch if. It's infuriating almost, to see how ignorance and fear of anything and anyone different were proclaimed witches and tortured and murdered. If you denied being a witch then you were tortured until you basically just wanted to die, so you would say anything they wanted. Prisoners were often tricked into saying they were a witch in exchange for freedom. I got a kick out of the woman who gets tortured till she's had enough and says I'll tell you everything and starts naming off everybody that's done her wrong and how there witches as well, smart idea. In my opinion everyone that cuts me off in traffic are witches. At the end he shows how modern day (being the 20's) it is hysteria and mental disorders, which we have specific names for every disorder he shows, and not the work of witches.
There are images of horror but it's more describing the peoples fear and nothing that actually happened.
I was surprised on the internet movie database that the only genre this falls into is horror. It's a a whole lot deeper than that i believe and plays true today and every decade since.
The real horror and probably the scariest of all is the judgmental ignorance and fear by man of anything different, and in this film if there was something that couldn't be understood, well then blame it on someone that looks and acts different and call them a Witch.
History repeats itself unfortunately you could use this same film today and use witches and then at the end of the movie you could replace mental disorders with Hitler and the Jews. You could use witches and then supplement mental disorders with slavery, racism and segregation. Again use witches and replace mental disorders with "the evil doers" our president refers too. Who will be the "witches" of the next generation? That is the horror.
This is a great and important film.

I received the DVD within a week's time. Perfect condition, as stated, and plays perfectly. Most grateful.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting film. The first two thirds better than the last.......2006-11-08

A very provocative look at the lore of witchcraft in Central Europe in the Middle Ages, and how many lives were destroyed by the Church. I enjoyed the documentary material which set up the narrative part of the film. The only part I found fault with was the end, where Christensen turns didactic, explaining how the witch hunters are still with us, persecuting victims of hysterical illness. But even in the last part there were some affecting moments.

I loved all the fantasy vignettes depicting the "witches'" false confessions of Black Sabbaths in the forest, and the horrific backlash of the Church. I can see why Benjamin Christensen was invited to the United States, and why Warner Brothers set him to work on old dark house comedy-horror projects. They were trying to repeat the success Universal had with German Director Paul Leni directing THE CAT AND THE CANARY.

I do love silent horror films from Europe (particularly Germany), and wish that Kino and Image, or Criterion would release more of them. I would particularly like to see restored versions of THE STUDENT OF PRAGUE and THE HANDS OF ORLAC, both starring Conrad Veidt. The version of THE STUDENT OF PRAGUE that's currently available is a poor copy of a 16 mm print, and deseves a better release.

5 out of 5 stars A silent era milestone given the Criterion treatment.......2006-06-06

This film was mentioned briefly in the acclaimed CINEMA EUROPE: THE OTHE RHOLLYWOOD. Captivated by its imagery, I sought this film and found it under the pretigious Criterion banner. Wow!

The picture complete with color tints is amazing!

An enthralling musical soundtrack with some of classical music's finets pieces!

A terrific and informative commentary with Swedish film professor, Casper Tybjerg.!

An introduction by the director from the 40's!

An extensive biblography!

The 1968 jazzy version eclipsed in Hollywood pandering only by the Sid Shienberg cut of BRAZIL!

This is essential viewing for film students, filmmakers, and silent buffs!

Description

Driving in their car through France one summer, two young girls, Anna & Francoise, find themselves trapped in the kingdom of the mythic Morgana, Queen of the Witches.

Ever since Merlin taught her his skills centuries ago, Morgana has gone on living by obtaining the souls of the young women who pass through her kingdom. In exchange, she gives the captives who agree to her pact eternal youth and beauty. Those who refuse her grow old and ugly in the dungeons of her castle.

A classic of erotic horror presented here uncut for the first time ever.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Bower of Pulchritude.......2007-03-22

One reviewer here seems to have gotten it all wrong about Morgana. She is a fox among a den of foxes. The crone-looking character is actually a dwarf man in the film who serves as Morgana's second in command, but I can see why "somebody" made the error--the opening scenes are highly distracting, the confusion stemming from the rather delightful sight of a bound, pleading, naked woman. That sort of thing tends to focus your attention away from other details, large and small. I'm sorry, but this movie is well worth seeing in all its cheesy glory--it's a pure erotic romp. Some of the nude scenes are positively enthralling, and for that reason alone it warrants top tier rating. Without getting too graphic, it's worth pointing out that some of the breasts in this film ought to be immortalized in marble. One absolutely priceless sequence has the "woman in jeopardy" fleeing Morgana's castle wearing nothing but a diaphanous baby-doll negligee. What more could a guy ask for but to see an equisitely leggy fawn such as her fleeing franticly through the forest in a skimpy see-through frock at daybreak? And then to witness this distressed nymph swimming through the frigid waters surrounding the castle? It is all close to being just too much. There are few "woman in jeopardy" comparisons to rival this one. In my heterosexual eyes, there is nothing on God's green Earth quite like seeing a nubile, shivering beauty in a wet nighty emerging from a lake at sunrise, even if it has to be in a movie. It's enough to make you want to lie down and die. As a bonus, people who like to see women in love will definitely like this movie, and those parts of the film are done well. Not being a fan of that sort of action, those scenes still impressed me with their erotic fineness. The director certainly had an eye for that kind of thing. And the story is not bad either. Five stars!

4 out of 5 stars enchanting and atmospheric.......2006-09-15

I adored the beginning of this: 2 young French girls, Anna and Francoise, are driving through the countryside and decide to spend the night in an abandoned cottage. The music, location, dialogue and cinematography are excellent. Then Anna disappears. The film loses its magic soon afterwards and I ended up fast forwarding a lot due to boredom. But still, you should watch the beginning. I've never seen anything like it. A treat for the eyes and ears :)

As a sex sleaze fan you have to like a movie where the first frame is the skin of a naked bound girl, don't you? The only drawback is immediately thereafter we're introduced to a real hag that haunts the rest of the film, Morgana herself, who unfortunately does not resemble the giant hose-bagged heroine we all know and love, but rather a kind of manly dwarf.

Nevermind, that's what video editing is for. The plot is pretty standard, pretty girls get lost in their car, find a pile of hay and immediately proceed to lez out. One of them finds a mystical boat (ala The Holy Grail, but the music isn't as good) and is immediately whisked off to an island where she promptly falls into a pile of naked girls. She takes a little hit off a hookah and finds herself all tied up in purple ropes, ready to be abused.

Then . . . it all turns to mush. There's a couple more scenes of lezzing out in diaphonous robes and that's it. No blood, no whipping, no bugger all. 86 minutes of zilch. At least it's in french so you don't have to listen to the plot. The minimum one star for the nudity, but I'd really give it zero if I could, what's nudity count for these days?

5 out of 5 stars Lost gem.......2005-09-21

This is a wonderful piece of French fantasy, never seen in this country before. It bears many similiarities to Jean Rollin (2 girls trapped in a castle, roads that are endless circles, lesbianism, the use of the French countryside, ruins, even a graveyard. Plus 2 of the actresses acted for Rollin), but weaves its own charm. The print is immaculate and beautifully transferred, and the girls are beautiful.
If you're in the mood for an offbeat fantasy spiced with some nudity and soft core, you won't be disappointed.
