If you crave an over-the-top historical kung fu-fantasy epic with a good dose of voluptuous nudity, bravura machismo, and passions so intense they verge on ridiculous, then Brotherhood of the Wolf is your movie. Based (loosely) on an 18th-century legend, this French film follows a hunky scientist (Samuel Le Bihan, who's sort of a second-string Christopher Lambert) and his Iroquois sidekick/spiritual partner (Mark Dacascos) as they pursue a monstrous wolf ravaging the French countryside. Along the way Le Bihan gets entwined with a beautiful noblewoman (Émilie Dequenne) and a gorgeous prostitute (Monica Belluci) with secrets. The plot grows more and more incomprehensible, but the mix of torrid emotions, outrageous action sequences, and lurid titillation is really what the movie is about. Ignore the highbrow philosophizing and confused political intrigue; just enjoy the sensual images. --Bret Fetzer

Twisted Path of the Wolf..........2007-08-21
2001's "Brotherhood of the Wolf" is a unique and over-the-top mixture of martial arts, horror, and costume drama, set in 1700's rural France. A ferocious beast resembling a werewolf ravages the countryside. The local authorities call in a naturalist from Canada and his Indian partner to solve the mystery. The two men will encounter the mysterious predator, but discover that human predators, conspiring in a brotherhood of the wolf, may be even more dangerous.
The storyline traces a twisted path through the fields, forests, farms, bordellos, and chateaus of the French countryside, in the process becoming rather convoluted. Viewers should resist the urge to apply too much analysis to the overblown plot, and settle for enjoying the ride. The movie revels in its own vivid telling; clearly, no expense was spared on costumes and sets.
The cast and production staff are nearly all French; the only actor likely to be familar to U.S. audiences is Monica Belluci, who plays a prostitute.
One of the highlights of the film is a martial arts sequence early in the movie, where the naturalist and his Indian companion confront a group of thugs. The DVD features a longer version of this fascinating fight sequence in the deleted scences section.
This movie is recommended as a different and entertaining alternative to the normal run of American-produced action films.
Movie.......2007-05-17
I saw this movie when it came out and have looked for it for a long time and finally I decided to check amazon, there it was.
If you like movies that show history in the more realistic with a plot and mythical mystery that this is the one you need to see. Brotherhood of the wolf is not a well known movie but, it is quite the leave where you are and travel into the past for the length of the movie.
It also, shows how mentally unbalanced man can be.
I received this movie quickly and with out delays.
just cool.......2007-05-14
The Brotherhood of the Wolf is a voice over but it is such a cool movie you won't care once you start watching it. The fights are good, it has a good plot twist and some hot women to boot ...
Captivating tale..........2007-05-07
of horror and fantasy. Based on true events, it blends historical drama with fantastics flights of fancy. Combat scenes were well choreographed, particularly in the deleted scenes included on the dvd.
Rousing and Robust.......2007-04-06
I can't speak French unfortunately but the English dubbing isn't bad. The cinematography is just gorgeous and the sound is incredible. Great story and good acting make this well worth seeing. I took a chance and ordered this without ever seeing it based on reviews here. All I can say is, thanks for the heads up. This is a great period piece and action movie to watch. If you enjoy movies like "Sleepy Hollow" with Johnny Depp, "Last of the Mohicans" with Daniel Day-Lewis, or "Hound of the Baskervilles" with Jeremy Brett you will probably enjoy it. I recommend it.

When the Hulk gets angry, his movie gets good, so you wish he'd get angry more often. Accepting this challenge after the triumphant Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, director Ang Lee has created an ambitious film, based on the Marvel comic created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, that succeeds as a cautionary tale about mad science and traumatized children coping with legacies of pain. That's the Hulk's problem: After accidental exposure to gamma radiation, scientist Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) turns into the huge, green, and indestructible Hulk when provoked, and repressed childhood memories fuel his fury. Hobbled by the obligatory "origin story" (to acquaint neophytes with the character's Jekyll-and-Hyde-ish fate), there's room for little else in a sluggish film that struggles to reconcile Lee's stylistic flair (evident in his visual interpretation of comic-book technique) with the razzle-dazzle of a megabudget franchise. What's good is good (Jennifer Connelly essentially echoes her role from A Beautiful Mind, and Nick Nolte is righteously tormented as Banner's father), but the movie's schizoid intentions remain largely unclear. --Jeff Shannon

Fabulous HD DVD material.......2007-09-10
The movie is pretty long and it is slow to start .it takes a little time to get into action but then fasten seat belt.Ok you like or not this kind of movie and that changes everything from 0 to 5 stars.
On High definition matter this hd dvd is a must have and let's consider it as a real demo material.
So if you are looking to perfection in pictures and sound this Hd DVD is for you
Perfect !.......2007-08-11
The best image from the HD-DVD. Very clear end sharp images. The best for me.
A prime cut from the comic cow........2007-08-06
Weighty concepts underlie this funny-book story. The destructiveness of anger. How violence begets violence. Science unhinged from morals. Envy (that little green monster) and greed bring ruin to the world. The power of parents over children. The ability of love to soothe (but not eliminate) the savage heart.
Plenty of unreality (how would gamma radiation give a very large man/creature the ability to leap miles at a single bound?) and comic-book action to please the juvenile-minded. Outstanding special effects. Sam Elliott and Nick Nolte bring gravitas and prevent things from getting too mawkish. A stronger lead actor (playing Dr. Bruce Banner) might have made this a top-shelf sci-fi picture.
He's green, he's mean...but seldom seen.......2007-07-12
This is a long boring movie. Stan Lee revolutionized comics by adding an emotional and psychological background to the standard superhero story line. But this technique was just a frame to add depth to the main story of adventure, threat and action. This film focuses on the emo/psych part, leaving a piddling amount of screen time to the action part. This genre screams for action, not endless background plot. Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly both appear to be sleepwalking thru their parts. Nick Nolte scares everyone with an emotionally drenched method acting demonstration. There is not one scene containing humor, fun, wonderment, adventure, or any kind of thrill whatsoever. This film is a major misfire.
Can HD DVD picture quality get any better than this?.......2007-06-15
Though the movie did not gross as much as Universal had originally hoped, this HD DVD is still a winner! Even if you do not appreciate the film, it makes wonderful HD DVD demo material! Personally I liked the film, but I give the film itself a 7, story is 6.5, the picture is a 10 and the sound is a 9. Ang Lee (the director) did a good job using multiple scenes on a single screen using comic book templates! I loved to see Hulk Smash all the tanks in the dessert in pure HD! Batman can't be the only Superhero in you HD DVD collection and Hulk is a lot better than Superman!

A matinee programmer with lofty ambitions, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is best appreciated as a vintage showcase for the stop-motion animation of special-effects legend Ray Harryhausen. The hoary plot follows the cold-war formula that dominated science fiction movies of the 1950s: After an atomic bomb test in the northern polar ice cap, a gigantic dinosaur--the fictional "Rhedosaurus"--is awakened from eons of dormancy, plots an undersea course for the Eastern seaboard, and proceeds to wreak havoc on New York City, culminating in a showdown with military marksmen at the Coney Island amusement park. Stock footage and tissue-thin drama make this a by-the-numbers monster flick, further hampered by Eugene Lourie's lackluster direction and a wooden B-movie cast. And yet, Harryhausen's first independent effort retains its atomic-age fascination: Beast marked yet another technical milestone for Harryhausen's impeccable techniques, and its perpetual status as a sci-fi classic is duly acknowledged in the DVD bonus features, including a retrospective featurette and a latter-day reunion of Harryhausen and longtime friend Ray Bradbury, whose short story "The Fog Horn" served as this film's inspiration. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Near the Arctic Circle, an atomic bomb is detonated. This fearsome experiment disturbs the sleep of a giant rhedosaurus encased in ice for more than 100-million years and sends it southward on a destructive, deadly rampage. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is a film of firsts. It spawned a new era of atomic-age creature features. It was the first screen adaptation of a work by fantasy fiction titan Ray Bradbury. And it marked the first time Ray Harryhausen had control over special effects. He came up with a fantastic creature (constructed at full scale, all 50 tons of it) that swims down from the north to run amok through New York City before being conquered in a spectacular Coney Island roller coaster finale. Take a classic ride. Unleash The Beast. Year: 1953
DVD Features:
Documentaries:Two commemorative 50th anniversary documentaries - The Rhedosaurus and the Roller Coaster: Making the Beast; Harryhausen & Bradbury: An Unfathomable Friendship
Production Notes
Theatrical Trailer:Giant monsters trailer gallery featurnig this film, The Black Scorpion, Clash of the Titans and The Valley of Gwangi
Customer Reviews:
big rhed comes homw.......2007-09-10
I am so glad that this has finally come out on dvd! My vhs copy was wearing out. Ray Harryhausens first solo project, and the one that firmly entrenched him as the all time master of the technique. The slow build up is intentionally reminiscent of King Kong, building expectation in the viewer. Then the action zooms along to the same sad ending. The bonus features are also excellent.
ultimate monster movie.......2007-08-17
This is my favorite monster movie. Good acting . Godzilla is abit of a joke but this is played like it is for real. Pretty good music too.
Adult Popcorn.......2007-07-06
This movie is what I call "Adult Popcorn." That doesn't mean you have to be one, but it helps.
When you are asked what movie you want to rent or buy, try this one.
Corny yes. Not great special affects. This is Jurasic Park 50 years before that movie was released. Old yes and fun to. Don't forget the popcorn.
The very latest models for 1953.......2007-06-28
It's hard to realize why this early stop-motion animation "beast on the loose" film is so warmly remembered until you actually see it, since it doesn't seem from its description like it should be that special. Its plot of a monster released by atomic radiation attacking a city has been repeated again and again, and owes much to both the 1933 KING KONG and the 1925 THE LOST WORLD (as Ray Bradbury and Ray Harryhausen, who respectively wrote its original story and created its effects, cheerfully admit in the accompaying feature). But in many ways this set the standard for the films of this sort that dominated the sci-fi films of the 50s, and the beast itself is really a marvel. Whereas King Kong was childlike, given to charming bits of curiosity and childish tantrums of rage, and the later (much inferior) Godzilla simply incarnated pure chaos, the Beast here has become much beloved over the decades because it is so ornery. It attacks fishing trawlers, lighthouses, diving bells and the docks of Manhattan for no good reason other than that it's particularly grumpy and ill-tempered, which makes it all the more adorable. (It even looks like a cross between a pit bull and a gila monster.)
As with most 1950s monster films, the stuff that comes in-between the Beast's rampages is pretty forgettable, although the Swiss Paul Hubschmid (here called Paul Christian) is a pretty unusual choice as the hero, and Paula Raymond, as the fretful assistant to a paleontology professor, is for some reason given a hilarious array of the very latest in New Look fashions in every scene she's in. Probably the film's producers figured if they couldn't give us the animated Harryhausen model of the rhedosaurus they'd have to give us something, so there she is sporting others sorts of the very latest models.
Great 50s Classic.......2007-03-10
I remember watching this as a kid on MONA LISA Monster Theatre.Still a great 50s SCI-FI Flick. Harry Harryhausen is the best at his creature animations. This movie ia a must for all SCI-FI fans.

Japan's favorite city-wrecker faces his most formidable enemy--a robot version of himself--in this sci-fi adventure, which packs enough action to satisfy fans of giant-creature brawls. As with the previous films in the unofficial "Godzilla Millennium" series (which reinvented the Toho canon following the release of Godzilla 2000), Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla dismisses all of the monster's previous rampages after its initial appearance in 1954, including his three showdowns with MechaGodzilla. Here, the massive robot is constructed using DNA from the 1954 Godzilla (still moldering in Tokyo Bay) to combat a new one that threatens Japan. Director Maasaki Tezuki (Godzilla vs. Megaguirus) favors action over story, which may displease hardcore Godzilla fans, but the battles are spectacular, and clips from older Toho titles like Mothra and War of the Gargantuas are always a welcome sight (as is a cameo by the Yankees' Hideki Matsui!). As with other Columbia-TriStar Godzilla DVDs, this widescreen disc offers viewers two language options: the original Japanese dialogue track (with English or French subtitles) and an English-dubbed track. --Paul Gaita
Customer Reviews:
The best Godzilla film of the 21st century.......2007-08-13
This movie is great. If you're a Godzilla fan, this is what you have been waiting for. It's got a lot of great action scenes, surprisingly good special effects, and a human element that you can give a crap about but at the same time doesn't get in the way of the monsters doing their thing. If Toho had made more Godzilla films like this one, maybe they wouldn't have had to send the franchise back into retirement.
Who knows when we'll see Godzilla in a movie again, but at least for now, we've got Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla.
Strange, yet good.......2007-03-07
It was not too long before I watched this movie that I had seen Godzilla v.s. Megaguirus, So I was hoping it would be the same Godzilla, so when I saw that his heat beam wasn't red, I was very dissapointed. Still, MechaG (as he is called) is absolutely incredible. The most streamlined and most Godzilla-like Mecha-Godzilla ever. But it's a little too much like godzilla X Megaguirus. Still, It's good, but not as good as Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S.
Get this movie
Effects Getting Better, But Story Doesn't Deliver.......2006-04-12
This was better than Final Wars, so I'm giving it two and half stars, but still it didn't top G2K. I thought the premise of developing a mechanical/living hybrid from the sheletal and DNA remains of the Oxygenized Godzilla from the orginal film was great. I was expecting even more thrills and chills when for a moment after the current Godzilla roars, Mechagodzilla starts realizing what or who it is. This showed a lot of promise since a Japanese created machine potentially running amuck may have caused the Japanese to rely on Godzilla to save them from their own creation. Alas, this wasn't pursued and the film went down hill from there. Too bad.
Great Godzilla film!.......2006-02-21
I read a number of the reviews for this movie and none of them mention how different this movie is from the many that came before it. It has a very human aspect to it, the plot does not just begin with Godzilla or some other monster showing up and subsequent events. It shows the evolution of Mechagodzilla's creation and all those involved from scientists to pilots. And for the first time we have a Godzilla movie where a woman soldier takes center stage.
Cool Godzilla Movie........2006-02-13
Great special effects, set design, lots of action and fast moving. This is one one the better Godzilla movies. It has the best pre-title sequence out of the entire series. The action sequences are loaded with explosions and lots of fun.
Mecha-Godzilla is really cool looking and is loaded with options such as laser beams that shoot from his eyes and missles that launch from his fingers. This was the third model of Mecha-Godzilla. This one offers alot more options that are standard as opposed to the previous two base models.
Godzilla will outlive us all, let's bask in the glow of his majestic presence.

Description
Everyone's favorite muck-encrusted plant-man is back in this tongue-in-cheek action-adventure, based on the award-winning DC comic series. Determined to solve the mysterious death of her mother, beautiful horticulturist Abigail Arcane ("Spin City's" Heather Locklear) visits her stepfather, Dr. Anton Arcane (Louis Jourdan), in his high-tech laboratory. Unfortunately Arcane is bent on taking her life for the creation of his immortality serum. Coming to her rescue is the former Dr. Alex Holland, now Swamp Thing, who sweeps her away to the heart of the bayou where they soon fall head over heels in love. But their romance goes awry when Arcane ruthlessly hunts down these unlikely lovers with a fiendish array of weaponry! Chock full of witty dialogue, dazzling stunt work and striking special effects, this outrageous action-comedy monster mash also features cult favorites Sarah Douglas (Superman II) and scream queen Monique Gabrielle.

Human / Vegetable Romance..........2006-01-06
OK, this one is terrible if you're a jaded adult. I admit I hated it utterly. However, it's a kid movie. I mean, there's only one "bad" word in the whole movie, zero blood, no nudity, insufferable characters, lots of gunfire / explosions, and 80s TV-movie production values. SWAMP THING himself is a walking compost heap w/ a heart of mold... er, gold. He battles a leach-man and some hicks in order to save two intensely annoying brats and Abigail (Heather Locklear) from certain doom. Abby's step-dad is none other than Dr. Arcane (Louis Jordan), sociopathic megalomaniac and mad scientist. Arcane's looking for a way to reverse the aging process, apparently by turning people into mutated freakazoids! I found this movie tedious and dumb, but I know I'd have loved it as a kid. Swampy even shows Abby some good ol' fashioned swamp-love! Hallucinegenic seedpods anyone?? So, shift yer brain into neutral and coast through this one! P.S.- If you're just looking for a good Jim Wynorski movie, check out CHOPPING MALL...
Great silly sequel!.......2005-09-29
The original film by Wes Craven was a tiny bit darker but still had lots of dark humor etc... This sequel seeks to be more campy and just plain fun. Its a fun film that just cant be taken seriously, like MOST B Movies! However it did do well enough to generate a tv show!
For those of us who "get" it, a masterpiece........2004-07-25
I guess you either "get" this sort of fun cheesey movie, or you don't. This is one of my all time favorites, ever since I was a kid. Better than the first movie, especially the Swamp Thing suit. Return of Swamp Thing is a fun, entertaining classic flick. It's not supposed to be scary, or complex. Just enjoy it!!
HIGHLY recommended. Wonderful movie. =D
Swamp Thing rules.............2003-03-28
Swamp Thing rules... even though this is a campy movie The Return of Swamp Thing is fun. If you like superhero, monster movies and camp rolled into one then this is the movie for you. The best part of this movie is the opening credits with that rock and roll song. This is one of the better Superhero movies... 10times better than THE Captain America, Fantastic Four and The Punisher movies that were never release. Right up there with Batman Returns and Superman 4.
Fairly decent........2003-03-27
Dr.Arcane is back, this time his stepdaughter comes to pay him a visit and hes got plans for her.Of course Swamp Things not going to let him harm her. They fall in love, that's about it.

Description
There is panic in a small seaside town as reports of a "sea devil" are terrifying the local fishermen. No one has seen him up close, but a beautiful girl named Gutiere meets and falls in love with the so-called devil, who turns out to be an amphibian man whose element is the sea. By falling in love with Gutiere, who is forced to marry the treacherous Zurita, he is subjecting his life to a deadly risk. This romantic melodrama, based on Alexander Belyaev's novel, was a box-office smash in the USSR in 1961.

Return to your Easter Bloc childhood.......2007-05-21
My wife had told me of this film she had seen on TV as a little girl in Cuba. Apparently it was played quite often because many Cubans I spoke to were familiar with it and had fond memories associated with it. A friend said she had seen it here and was disappointed because it was campier than she had recalled, but she did remember the title and so I was able to find it for my wife. We watched it together, and sure, it was dated, but she enjoyed it just as much as I enjoyed seeing again Mighty Joe Young after thirty years, recognizing its flaws, yet still able to appreciate and recall the experience of seeing it as a child. The film is frequently dark and grainy and difficult to see. The villain is stock - an oyster boat captain who forces his worker's beautiful daughter to marry him and wants to capture in the amphibian man the ultimate oyster diver. The hero, a young man whose scientist father had performed the operation that allowed him to breathe under water, has that wide-eyed innocent yet self-assured look of Terence Hill in My Name is Nobody. The story is actually familiar to anyone who's ever seen Splash or The Little Mermaid - your typical fish-out-of-water story, but more a drama than a comedy with mild socialist overtones. Not a great movie, but worth seeing, I think.
The Amphibian Man.......2005-10-02
I saw this movie long time ago in the movie theater. I know I liked it then. Some thing must have changed. May be it is my age. When I saw the movie in DVD, I was totally disappointed. The DVD quality was very poor. The story was average. I regret buying this movie.

Absolutely beatiful!.......2003-03-17
I have read "Amphibian Man" by Aleksandr Belyaev and then I watched this movie. Wow! It's really great! I like it even more than book. Beautiful, beautiful movie! Highly recommended
Praise RUSCICO!.......2003-01-31
A 1928 science-fiction/fairy-tale, dear to generations of Russians, was brought with loving care to their cinemas in 1961 and attracted lines of adoring fans, which spanned blocks at the box offices.
More than 4 decades later, the Russian Cinema Council through Image Entertainment, presents a DVD so stunning in color, clarity and crisp stereophonic sound that you can't help but beileve this is what it was like on the big screen!
I recommend this very highly for what it is; a sensitive love story with many twists and complex characters. Don't be misled by the title, this is not a Russian Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Praise RUSCICO for a dvd (great extras included) made with the same great care that was used in the making of the film.

Gory.......2007-05-23
Maybe I'm burned out with movies with not much more than oodles of gore, but this one started off that way and ended for me that way: I turned it off after ten minutes. Just tired of this stuff from Hollywood.
DEADLY SERUM.......2007-04-12
This low budget indie hearkens back to some of the similarly-themed films of the 60s, like HORRORS OF THE BLACK MUSEUM. In SERUM, a mad doctor thinks he has developed a serum that will cure cancer; in actuality, it merely makes the subject puffy and homicidal, and oh yes, cannibalistic. The good doctor decides that to make it work he needs live subjects rather than corpses.
Woven into this plot is the story of handsome, nice young Eddie, the doctor's nephew, who has been accepted into medical school. One night while walking home drunk from a club, he is struck by an automobile and near death. Guess what the good uncle decides to do?
Derek Phillips (from TV's FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS) has an honest likeability and does well; the rest of the cast is pretty weak. SERUM certainly sets no new standards for horror films but it's entertaining if you enter without any expectations.
just plain fun.......2007-02-13
This film was just plain fun. You can't take it too seriously. A wacky doctor (and this guy was out there) drills into people's heads to find the answer to immortality. When he uses it on his nephew things go horribly wrong...of course! It was funny (a guy has to stay in college another year after he spends his tuition money on breast implants for his girlfriend - classic!) and it had some really great gory scenes. The pacing was good -- the movie moved along well -- and the acting was good. I'm not saying it was the best movie ever, but I enjoyed it. And for a low budget movie, it was better made than most.
Good story.......2007-02-07
I love movies but am not a big fan of horror films. However, many of my students love them and tell me I should see this one or that one, which I do from time to time. I watched "Serum" and was greatly surprised. Naturally, there was the gore and violence that I do not normally like, but the film also had a story, which was refreshing. The filmmaker created an interesting plot and took time to develop the characters, which made you more invested in them. Obviously, it was a small budget film, but it didn't matter because you liked the characters and wanted to find out what was going to happen next. And, I thought the production value was better than many other independent movies I've seen.
Well crafted thriller, with good balance of humor & more..........2007-01-31
Kudos to director Steve Franke for crafting a credible and entertaining horror-thriller with "SERUM." The film holds it's own against mainstream theatrical horror films such as "SAW", "HOSTEL" and the thematically similar "DAWN OF THE DEAD." However, where these others may excel in graphic violence (not my favorite element), "SERUM" beats them with humor and plausibly absurd circumstances that catch the viewer by surprise while delivering an equal jolt of shock and comedy. It's a notable effort and evidences a bright future for director Franke given perhaps a larger budget or a less formulaic structure. All told, well worth watching.

Government security sure has gotten lax at nuclear test sites. It seems like any old defecting Russian nuclear physicist fleeing Soviet agents (who are oddly indistinguishable from American gangsters) can stumble into an A-bomb detonation by accident and turn into a bloodthirsty monster. (You think Stan Lee watched this film before creating the Incredible Hulk?) Meanwhile a vacationing family wanders through the desert as the cops hunt the atomic beast. Tor Johnson (an Ed Wood Jr. fixture) makes a superbly cheesy rampaging mutant, but the film really enters the Twilight Zone when the investigating cops mistake an innocent dad looking for his sons lost in the desert for their target ("Shoot first, ask questions later" is their motto). Supercheap cult director Coleman Francis shot this without sound, dubbing it all in later, and he clumsily cuts away from every actor as they start to speak to hide his handiwork. He hardly had to worry: the flat dialogue and wooden narration is almost absurd enough to distract viewers from his cinematic incompetence. In short, a masterpiece of zero-budget camp with an unbelievably surreal edge. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Commies made him an atomic mutant! Noted Russian nuclear scientist Joseph Javorsky (Tor Johnson) escapes to the United States with "Top Secret" Soviet documents. U.S. Army personnel accompany him to the Yucca Flats Atomic Testing Grounds, but Soviet agents are in hot pursuit! They run Javorsky's car off the road, right into the bomb testing site. During the ensuing gunfight, an H-bomb detonation kills everyone except Javorsky, who is transformed into a crazed atomic-mutated beast on a bloodthirsty rampage! Inspired by the Cold War, Communist infiltration of America, and the constant threat of atomic attacks, this drive-in theater classic from the Kennedy Era stars cult favorites Tor Johnson and Conrad Brooks from "Plan 9 from Outer Space."
Customer Reviews:
TOR JOHNSON IS BRILLIANT!!!.......2007-08-27
Tor Johnson's performance is better than anything DeNiro has ever done. The subtle brutality demonstrated by Tor and sparse dialog add unbelievable tension to the cold war era atmosphere of the film. The picture quality is perfect and the soundtrack sets the pace. This movie should've won an Oscar on cinematography alone with the breathtaking mountain scenery on par with Lawrence of Arabia. Don't miss this one!
The Worst of Coleman Francis, and That Says A Lot.......2007-07-05
I best remember this movie for the narrator's random comment, "Flag on the moon. How did it get there?" Everything else is extremely forgettable.
Well, Tor Johnson is supposed to be some kind of large scientist running away or something. But an A-bomb explosion turns him into the Beast of Yucca Flats. Which means he wears ugly rags and runs around, instead of wearing a suit and running around, like he was doing earlier in the movie. Actually, I don't know what the plot of the movie is, but I think this is really it. If I'm wrong, I'm not off by much, and if I am off by much, my plot synopsis is bound to be better than the actual plot of the movie. That's how bad it is.
So some rifle guys in helicopters are called in to hunt down the beast. They see a man in the field with his kid and immediately their minds think, "There's the beast right there! Let's kill it!" So that's what they do. And I forget how the Beast of Yucca Flats dies, or if he dies, but I'll always remember, "Flag on the moon," even though I'll NEVER know what the heck that means.
Some Bad Films Are Amusing To Watch, But Yucca Flats Is Not Among Them.......2006-11-03
According to film lore, THE BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS was filmed without sound and dialogue was dubbed in postproduction. In order to accomodate this effect, the camera usually photographs characters in long shot; cuts off their heads; shows a character listening in a reaction shot; or has the so-called actors cover their mouths at strategic moments. The effect is very obvious and even so there are quite a few moments where characters are clearly speaking but no sound is coming out.
This is actually the most interesting thing about the film. The story, such as it is: a Russian scientist (Tor Johnson) has defected to the United States. Chased by Russian agents, he escapes into an atomic test area, where radiation converts him into a mindless killer. He kills a vacationing couple and local police officers pursue him. One of the police officers takes to the air, where he mistakes an innocent man for the Beast, and spends quite a lot of time shooting at him. And so on.
YUCCA FLATS has the reputation of being among the worst films ever made. The reputation is deserved. The film looks like it cost about twenty six cents to make; the cast is uninspired, to say the least; and the script (which consists largely of meaningless narration) is stupid in a very unamusing way. Some bad films are amusing to watch. YUCCA FLATS is not among them.
GFT, Amazon Reviewer
Touch the `Play' Button. Something Weird Happens........2006-09-07
In the realm of bad movies, there is the good-bad, and there is the bad-bad.
And then there's The Beast of Yucca Flats. I call this the good-bad-ugly.
The good: it runs for only 54 minutes.
The bad: that's 54 minutes too long.
The ugly: Tor Johnson.
Some fans of truly bad films may like this. I am a fan of truly bad films, and I didn't like this. For the most part, at least. Sure, it has its moments. The whole notion of Ed Wood regular Tor Johnson playing a Russian scientist defecting to the US is, on its own, pretty laughable. But once that's established and the movie rolls along, you're pretty much done laughing at that idea.
So you ask yourself, what's next? How about the narrator's lines? Hmm, we may be on to something here. There is not a single line that makes sense. I'll say that again, not a single one. But do they pass the good-bad test of making you laugh? Well, yes, but the laughter is often accompanied by groans of disbelief and wrinkling of the brows. By comparison, such classics as Robot Monster and Plan 9 are laugh-out-loud hilarious.
Hey, how about plot twists? Look, we have Tor kissing a rabbit at the end. How's that for a surprise ending? Uh, doesn't work for you? Ok, I didn't think it would.
Conclusion: The Beast of Yucky, excuse me, Yucca Flats is not bad enough to be good-bad. The laughs are too few and far-between. And it's too boring to be that much fun. But still, you have to credit Coleman Francis for scoring some remarkable feats with this piece.
1. He manages to bore us in just 54 minutes.
2. He actually made money out of this. Ok, maybe that's not all that remarkable, since you really can't lose when you start with a budget of $0.
3. So how about this: he succeeded where Ed Wood failed. He killed Tor Johnson's career. That's right, this abomination of filmmaking was the ex-wrestler's swan song.
What a way to go.
