Not short on murder, mayhem, or any other screwball '70s conventions, Foul Play is a wonderful vehicle for Goldie Hawn. She plays Gloria, a librarian "ready to take a chance again," who ends up the target of an assassination ring. Chevy Chase, fresh off of Saturday Night Live, does the closest thing to real acting he would ever achieve (okay, maybe Fletch) as Tony, the cop assigned to protect Gloria. Dudley Moore made an indelible impression on American audiences as Stanley Tibbets, a surprisingly kinky symphony conductor. But it's the quirky things that make this film: the grandmothers playing Scrabble with expletives, Burgess Meredith's snake Esme, the old Japanese couple in the back of the careening limo. From the opening credits with Barry Manilow crooning the title song, this is a fond trip down memory lane. --Keith Simanton

4 out of 5 stars Muther........ with a laugh.......2007-07-12

Well, well Goldie you were fabulous back then as now and Chevy, what a hunk. The story is a bit silly and the car chase to the opera rather long winded, however overall the film is pure "Who Dunnit" entertainment. If you want to just make some popcorn and relax for the two hours this is the movie to see. Being a scrabble player I particularly enjoyed the two senior citizens creating a rather interesting word on the scrabble board as Goldie hangs on the edge of the stairwell in the rain.
I also enjoyed the fact that it was a full screen version.
The quality is good and of course the soundtrack includes a number of lovely old Barry Manilow favourites. All in all a good entetainment package.
Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars It makes me happy inside.......2007-06-28

This is a movie I can enjoy over and over, like a favorite fairy tale.

Where do I begin? Goldie Hawn as Gloria Mundy is gutsy yet tender, assertive without being obnoxious, and funny, funny funny.

The plot is multi level. If you care about such things, it's an intriguing concept that international terrorists want to kill the pope in order to force taxation of churches. If that's a yawn for you, just enjoy the running around and avoiding the bad guys. It's both a tribute to and a sendup of both Hitchcock and cop movies.

If you like classical music, the entire operetta of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado is the soundtrack, (almost) completely in sequence. (OK, there's some BeeGees mixed in, too.) If you don't like opera, just ignore it, you don't have to understand it to have it add to the fun.

Some of the details are marvelous!! In all my life, no matter how "serious" the movie is, I have never seen a good-guy gunshot scene done so well. (Chevy Chase as cop Tony Carlson has the bad guy in his sight, realizes he can't make the shot without endandering an innocent bystander, and declines to shoot--rather than shooting away anyhow!) The lead up to what Stanley Tibbits does for a living is hilarious and strangely subtle. And the Scrabble game could stand alone in any comedy show.

This is the acting career that got away from Chevy Chase--he does nuanced irony ("Stiltskin...I've heard that name somewhere before") and pratfalls with equal aplomb. If he'd stayed with directors that kept him from chewing the scenery in other movies, what would he have accomplished?

OK, some of the details are silly--how in the world did Gloria's clothes get in Tony's apartment? Why do the bad guys let her keep her pocketbook?

But in the long run it's fun, and they all (good guys, anyway) lived happily ever after.

5 out of 5 stars Just fun.......2007-06-26

A movie to watch for fun. Nothing earth shattering, but very enjoyable. One of my all time favorite movies

Don't panic! After twenty years stuck in development (a mere blink compared to how long it takes to find the answer to life, the universe, and everything), The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has finally been turned into a movie. Following the radio play, TV series, commemorative towel, and books, this latest installment in the sci-fi-comedy franchise is based on the screenplay and detailed notes by Douglas Adams.

Hitching a ride.

For those unfamiliar with the story, everyman Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) wakes up one morning to discover that his house is set to be demolished to make room for a bypass. Little does he know the entire planet Earth is also set to be destroyed for an interplanetary bypass by the Vogons, a hideous and bureaucratic race of aliens realized in the film by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Whisked off the planet by his best friend, alien-in-disguise Ford Prefect (Mos Def), Dent embarks on a goofy jaunt across the galaxy accompanied by his trusty Hitchhiker's Guide, which looks like a really fancy PDA.

The guide itself provides some of the funniest bits of the movie, little animated shorts that explain the ludicrous life forms and extraterrestrial phenomena our heroes encounter. Along the way Arthur meets the two-headed party animal/president of the galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox (Sam Rockwell) and develops an unrequited crush on fellow earthling Trillian (Zooey Deschanel). The creatures and sets are inspired and answer to the sci-fi fan's primal need to see lots and lots of cool stuff. In particular, there's John Malkovich's creepy, CGI-enhanced Humma Kavula. He's a guru leading a religion that worships the gigantic nose that allegedly sneezed the universe into existence (naturally all their prayers end not with "Amen" but with "Bless you.") The aliens the team encounters are inspired creations, eminently worthy of action figure-ification, and the sets belie an attention to detail worthy of freeze-framing. Fans of the other Hitchhiker manifestations, namely the British TV series, will be amused by a number of in-jokes sprinkled throughout the movie.

Concept art: The Heart of Gold pod on the planet Vogsphere

Where the story stumbles is in the telling--as books, the Hitchhiker's Guide was foremost about goofy and brilliant ideas that raised questions about our place in the universe while getting a laugh. The cast seems at times bewildered, at least when Sam Rockwell isn't picking pieces of scenery out of his teeth, perhaps a natural reaction to an adaptation of a book with no traditional plot. The movie has enough trouble figuring out how to get the characters from one fantastical location to the next that Adams's funniest concepts often feel left in the dust. While the reverence the filmmakers felt toward Adams's legacy is apparent, one wonders what we could have expected had the creator of this science fiction universe lived to see it with his own eyes. -- Ryan Boudinot

3 out of 5 stars Amusing in places, but thin.......2007-08-15

I never read any of Douglas Adams' books, so I approached this movie with an open mind. My wife and I both found it mildly amusing, but no more than that. The plot, such as it is, is episodic and skimpy. There are some funny bits, and the visuals are nice, but there's not much character development or real substance. There are better sci-fi comedies, and worse.

3 out of 5 stars My guess is that you should read the book........2007-07-14

This was the book all the geeks and nerds middle school read back in the mid 80's. I can remember people cracking jokes out of this book, and talking about "42". Its kind of like Monty python to many of the band and drama people of high school would blab about. Well, I never read the book, tried, but lost interest within the first couple sections. So I though I'd finally check out the movie. Lately movies have been sticking closer to a books original story line. And guess what, its still as dumb as it was when I was younger. Just don't care for the humor. I can see how true fans of the book are bashing this film, it so short and jumpy, i can imagine how much it must have cut out of the orininal tale. And it ended so abruptly, what the heck about the second head, and the gun...oh wait, who cares is the ultimate question. 42 is the answer....some 42 year old virgin sitting in his parents basement with their star wars collection (or star trek) quoting monty python and talking about band camp. I would have to say get the book, at least you are reading and building an imagination, this movie is just not good.

5 out of 5 stars HEY! are all those other movies boring you? watch this one instead!.......2007-06-15

it goes without saying: the more original the novel, the higher expectations are for the movie adaptation. douglas adams shares the rarest of company, with vonnegut being the only contemporary peer and source of inspiration that im aware of (if you know others, please recommend them!) thankfully, hitchhikers delivers on screen, accurately capturing the feel of the book, even with the standard deviation and dilution of plot and character. narrated excerpts from the guide, necessary for an authentic hikers experience, are brilliant in content and execution. if i really wanted to find fault, id say that zaphods part was a bit overacted and marvins a tad underacted. but the film is so much fun that its easy to overlook any minor shortcomings. how often do you find a movie with above average intelligence that doesnt take itself too seriously and makes you laugh for days after its over? also contributing greatly to my judgment of overall satisfaction and life enhancement is the fact that many lines are conveniently quotable when a) goofing off with a few friends, b) taking a shower (with or without a few friends) or c) begrudgingly dealing with the everyday frustrations and activities of an all too banal, conformist society, which elevates vacuous filth and garbage above anything of actual merit or significance.

if youre not familiar with the hitchhikers guide, id describe the movie as somewhat of a marriage between "i love huckabees" (more of the intellectual approach) and the tv series "scrubs" (more on the goofy side, as if you didnt know) with a sci-fi setting. take note: the emphasis is on the fiction, with the science being loosely (albeit cleverly) applied, so dont take it too seriously! if you start analyzing everything as if its star trek, youll completely miss the point, only part of which is to poke fun at the constipated nature of the sci-fi majority. and if you like the movie, by all means read the book. its 2764.31910283387400183401448308238532722014869088173775898283 times smarter, funnier and betterer...

4 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING REMAKE.......2007-06-13

The original BBC Hitchhikers guide was wonderful fun with a low budget. This film gives it the updated graphics and more to make it even better. A funny adventure from beginning to end. Martin Freeman plays Arthur Dent perfectly. The entire cast performs so well and have great chemistry. Mos Def as Ford was brilliant and what more can be said for the President of the Galaxy. The humor and the graphics make this a perfect movie to see for all sci fi lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Adventurous Movie.......2007-06-12

First off, I am not going to give a synopsis of the movie - then you wouldn't need to watch it. I will say that based on the reviews I have read, if you liked the book or Mini-Series, maybe you should shy away from this movie. I myself have not read the book so I am like most people. My entire family loved this movie and my kids watch it over and over again. This is good news given that my kids are usually bored 5 minutes into any task they take on. The characters in this movie work well together and the movie makes you feel good from start to finish.
As a lover of all things Sci-Fi I found this movie to fit the bill perfectly. It would be a shame if you didn't watch this movie simply because the original book fans were disappointed. Try it out, and I would bet you like it (better the second time around).

Follow That Bird is as much a journey through time as it is a romp past the Sesame Street stop sign. Curiously, the cast members--live ones like Gordon and Maria, not just the Muppets--have the timeless look to them. Only the cameos (by Sandra Bernhard, John Candy, and others) plus a few ill-conceived hairdos clue us in that this feature film was made in 1985. Otherwise, it's all sophisticated Sesame humor and bighearted fun here as Oscar, the Count, and crew set off to rescue Big Bird, who's on the lam from a family of adoptive dodos. Only one conceivable complaint: The latter crop of Street viewers may miss Elmo, who hadn't been created when Bird first flew into theaters. --Tammy La Gorce

Description

A meddling social worker sends poor Big Bird off to Ocean View, Illinios, for the comforts of family life with his "own kind," the Dodos. But Big Bird is a disaster as a Dodo and, lonely and homesick, he soon sets off on foot for Sesame Street. Can his old friends find him before he runs "afowl" of trouble en route?

This was a gift to a 37 year old Downs Syndrome boy, who loves Big Bird and Sesame Street--he plaayed it immediately and enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps my Daughter Happy.......2007-07-21

I remember this movie from when I was a child. My daughter, who is almost 2, loves to watch Sesame Street especially Elmo, so I was not sure if she would like this movie. We saw it one day on TV and she loved it, so I went on my search to find it. She has watched it so much that she signs parts of the songs and knows parts of the movie. It is a great help if I need to try and get something done.

5 out of 5 stars Oldie but Goodie!.......2007-07-07

My sons watched this with delight on VHS years ago. I purchased 2 copies, one for my three year old grandson and one for my friend's four year old grandson. They now watch it many times a day with delight. Big Bird belongs in the hearts of everone. I still enjoy watching the CD along with my grandson. Some things never grow old.

5 out of 5 stars It's Sesame Street!.......2007-05-15

This movie is excellent for kids and adults. It reminds us that we can have lots of friends and it doesn't matter what they look like. It reminds us that we can take a break for ourselves and just enjoy life. It also teaches us that when things get rough, you just have to keep going. I have loved this movie since I was a child. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Still good after all these years.......2007-04-10

I recently bought this movie for my friend's child because the mom and I both loved this movie when we were kids. After watching it again, 20 some odd years later, this movie is still entertaining for adults and children. Highly recommended!

Product Description

Burt Reynolds stars as the Bandit in this seminal portrayal of rough-ridin', beer-swillin', sheriff-dodgin', trouble-chasin' truckers. The Bandit's has taken on his craziest haul yet: a trailer full of Coors beer. If he can deliver the goods from Texarcana to Atlanta within forty-eight hours, he'll be $80,000 richer. Hilarious mayhem ensues, however, when the Bandit falls for a runaway bride (Sally Field). As they push toward Atlanta, the two have to evade Fields' vengeful father-in-law, Texas Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason as the maniac "Smokey" of the title). The stakes get higher and the car chases more frenzied in this hysterical romp through the American highways. Charismatic performances by Reynolds and Gleason made this a huge box office draw. ITA winner. Academy Award Nominations: Best Film Editing.

It's easy to assume this is just another dumb redneck comedy from Burt Reynolds's years of underachievement. But it's not bad as a dumb redneck comedy at all. Directed by career stuntman Hal Needham, Smokey and the Bandit is just a goofy chase starring a bunch of Reynolds's Hollywood cronies. New to the job as film boss, Needham brings a silly but energized sensibility to the production and an action man's need to see things moving. But he also has a distinctive feeling for relationships, and he's good with a joke. Put all that together, and Smokey is, at the very least (and unlike its sequels), a simple and original pleasure. --Tom Keogh

Ok for the nostalgia and the fun out of it.this will remain a classic.as for the special edition the pictures are ok but the sound has nothing to see with DTS exept the first 2 seconds when the truck starts the engine. the rest is a poor mono stéréo downmix..mostly mono in te central speaker.
Concerning the Hd dvd version reviews seem to go in the same direction.

I had forgotten how much fun the late 70's were. After seeing this on CMT and other channels a few times, my feeling was that "this sucks just as bad as I remember". But after seeing it on DVD in its entirety without commercial interruption(ha), the pacing and flow of the movie seems to stand up well, even though if you made this film today, it would only run 38 minutes, because all the car chase scenes would be edited in milliseconds. Not a bad period piece from 197X, at all.

5 out of 5 stars A fun movie even with the errors........2007-03-20

I saw this movie when it first came to the theater. No such thing as video back then. This movie set off the Firebird craze and furthered the CB craze. It is a fun movie in spite of the 50+ obvious continuity errors in it. Some of the really obvious errors range from evidence of previous takes of a scenes (Tire marks on the pavement) to watching a Firebird accelerating as if it has a 4 speed transmission only later to see an automatic transmission gear shift, to watching the order of other prop cars change. Even when "Frog" has her feet out the window while going down the road in the next shot, where her head is on the console, the transmission shifter is in neutral.

Get the movie and watch it. Its fun in spite of the errors.

When Goldie Hawn recommended Elizabeth Berkley for a small role in First Wives Club, she publicly stated that Berkley deserved the opportunity to redeem herself after starring in the ridiculous Showgirls. That says it all: this sleazy, stupid movie, which mixes soft pornography with the clichés of backstage dramas, is the kind of project an aspiring actress would have to put well behind her to keep a career going (though costar Gina Gershon certainly benefited from her, uh, exposure in the film). Berkley plays a drifter who hitches a ride to Las Vegas, becomes a lap dancer and then a performer, and discovers--gasp!--there's a whole world of sex and violence involved with these things. Gershon is probably the best element in the film, playing Berkley's bisexual rival for the big spotlight on stage. Joe Eszterhas was well overpaid for writing this howler, and director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct) should have known better than to take it seriously. --Tom Keogh

Description

Seduction, passion and power struggles unfold when the creators of Basic Instinct, director Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers) and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (Original Sin) blow the lid off the seemingly glamorous world of Las Vegas show dancing to create one of the most controversial and shockingfilms of all time. Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) has what it takes to make it as a Las Vegas show girl what she doesn't have is a way in. To survive, she accepts the only job available: lap dancing at a seedy club. And when she meets Cristal (Gina Gershon), Vegas' reigning show girl, Nomi wants everything she has including her boyfriend (Kyle MacLachlan). And as Nomi dives deeper into the world she so desperately desires, a rivalry between the two women heats up. The battle for the spotlight becomes so fiercely competitive that it drives Nomi to desperate lengths and devious heights for fame in Sin City.

5 out of 5 stars First 'Valley of the Dolls'... then 'Mommie Dearest' ... now 'SHOWGIRLS'. Thank Heaven for Bad Hollywood Trash!!.......2007-07-29

"Instant camp classic," giggled The New York Times about Showgirls. And how! It's been well noted that writer Joe Eszterhas lifted the plot of Showgirls from All About Eve, 42nd Street and Flashdance. It should also be pointed out that Showgirls owes a major debt to Valley of the Dolls.

What Eszterhas has done is combine the four femmes from Dolls into just two gals--with schizo results. Elizabeth Berkley behaves like both a nice newcomer seduced by her boss and a self-destructive, psychotic...well, you know; costar Gina Gershon is both a sweet showgirl and a seen-it-all, show-biz monster. Even the stars we hear the filmmakers wanted for the Berkley and Gershon roles, Drew Barrymore and Madonna, couldn't have pulled off playing such split personalities. With two glassy-eyed doorstops in the leads, Showgirls is unadulterated farce from the get-go.

Our show begins when tough, young hitchhiker Berkley gets a lift from hunky sociopath Dewey Weber, who generously drives her to Las Vegas, then steals her suitcase (what does he think is inside?). Down-and-out Berkley moves in with dim-bulb waitress Gina Ravera and soon Berkley's got a gig as a cheesy stripper, but when she gets a look at the Big Time at the hotel Ravera works at, she witnesses a real Vegas show starring Gershon (who, despite the rhinestones glued to her boobs, is indistinguishable from any of the other dancers). A coked-up Gershon turns up at Berkley's strip joint with her hotel boss/lover Kyle MacLachlan, and pays Berkley $500 for a nude lap dance, during which Berkley, in a fit of originality, licks her own -- (no ...you gotta see it.) Whereupon Gershon encourages Berkley to audition for the hotel show.

Surveying the line of hopefuls, snide show producer Alan Rachins snarls at the first, "What are these, watermelons? This is a stage, babe, not a patch!" Berkley is hired and proceeds to witness the dog-eat-dog world of showgirls: one chorine growls at seamstress Ravera, "You're gonna see a smilin' sn--ch if you don't fix this G-string." Well, maybe it's more dog-eat-dog-food: over lunch Gershon tells Berkley, "I've had dog food. I used to love Doggie Chow," and Berkley gushes, "I used to love Doggie Chow, too!" The brief bonding over pet food experiences ends when Gershon comes on to Berkley and Berkley rejects her, sneering, "B-tch!"

Berkley is visited in her new, "classier" digs by her old strip-club pals. Flush with success, Berkley goes after druggy McLachlan. Naked in his pool, they have a whiplash-like imitation of sex which resembles nothing so much as an epileptic fit. (You'll want to throw in your laundry and add detergent!) Then, having stolen Gershon's guy, she shoves Gershon down a staircase, and that night she takes Gershon's place in the show and becomes a star (although she, like Gershon, blends right into the chorus). Her triumph is spoiled when pal Ravera is gang-raped by a rock star and his friends. Suddenly, Showgirls veers off into Cleopatra Jones/Coffy territory, with Berkley becoming a martial-arts super-heroine--Ninja Showgirl?--who kicks the rocker senseless. After French-kissing Gershon farewell, an older, wiser Berkley blows town, hitching a ride with, yep, luggage thief Weber. The duo heads for L.A.--to work, we hope, for Zalman King in a sexy cable TV series lifted from their roles here: each week, a little lap-dancing, a little crime-fighting. We'd lap it up.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointement ............2007-07-24

Extremely disappointed. Exact the same movie no deleted scenes or any additional scenes. However there are scenes which exists and were not included in the movie. No comments from actors no interviews ..... I don't even know why it was called fully exposed version.

2 out of 5 stars A BLATANT MGM DOUBLE-DIP..........2007-07-19

... I could have sworn that, just last week, Amazon listed the running time at 172 minutes on this new edition... thinking that the movie has been extended rather considerably, I went out and bought this new version which isn't new at all - with the exception of a few worthless extras, it's the exact same DVD!

I have to agree with Brett Cullum - I'd be quite interested in hearing a commentary track from Elizabeth Berkley dishing the dirt on the role that trashed her movie career before it even started - all for only $100,000 (that's what she was paid back in 1995 - obviously, this girl needs a new management team)!

1 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2007-07-01

It's just fascinating how bad this film truly is. I just caught it again the other nite on cable and whats remarkable is that directing credit went to Jay Jansen(on t.v.). But, obviously, everyone knows Paul Verhoeven directed the theatrical release. The t.v. version isn't any worse than the theatrical release, so I don't understand Paul Verhoeven taking his name off the credits. This film just sucks through and through. Avoid it at all costs, watch it for free first, then decide.

4 out of 5 stars Here is what is on this thing... .......2007-06-29

If you previously bought the SHOWGIRLS VIP edition - this is the exact same disc only packaged without the box and all the trinkets that came with that edition. You get commentary by a guy who is a fan of the movie and helps host late night screenings, the Scores girls talk about stripping and critique those sequences, and there's an old promotional piece made during shooting that is called "A Diary". The transfer is good and the extras are fun, though none of them seem to cover anybody associated with the film. If you did not purchase the glam deluxe box set this is a cheap way to get all those features without hunting it down. Otherwise if you have that edition, this is merely a double dip and repackaging of the same disc with new cover art.

This is the NC-17 cut and no additional material has been added. If you have that edition already there is no difference in the movie at all. There are no deleted or extended scenes. This is the version shown in theatres and released twice before on DVD.

SHOWGIRLS begs for better extras. I would love to hear a director's commentary or Elizabeth Berkley and Gina Gershon talk about the film. But that hasn't happened yet. Maybe one day we can hope for a Criterion edition and all the stops will be pulled out!

1 out of 5 stars don't hitch to this one.......2007-08-08

horrible movie, horrible acting. worst movie i have seen in years. however, the video quality of this blu-ray disc is one of the best yet. still not worth your time or money.

3 out of 5 stars Five Star Movie - Three Star Blu-Ray Disc.......2007-08-03

Having owned the first release of this movie on DVD, when I heard it was coming out on Blu-Ray I had to pick it up; after all, this was the movie that convinced me to pick up Douglas Adams' spectacular written novels (from Hitchhiker's to Dirk Gently) and give them a read. While watching the movie in 1080i was a pleasure, I was rather disappointed to find that many of the special features found on the original disc - including the absolutely brilliant interface with the interactive improbability drive that occasionally took you to an Easter Egg - were stripped out of the Blu-Ray disc. I could have even dealt with the loss of the interface in exchange for the movie showcase menu that allows you to access features, select scenes, and access the setup while the movie is playing, if only they had provided all the content on the original DVD. I've experienced this now on a couple of Blu-Ray discs and I find it quite upsetting (officially entering rant territory), that despite the capacity for Blu-Ray discs to hold 80% more data than a DVD, and 40% more data than a HD disc, that companies are skimping on features and selling the discs at an inflated price. While Blu-Ray may be the superior format, it's not going to gain in market standing by the release of inferior products.

4 out of 5 stars Great fun.......2007-07-23

Before I saw this, I had heard alot of bad things about it. I have read the book many, many times, and was a little worried about watching it. I finally got to see it right before it left the theatre and I have seen it about a billion times after that. I don't know what everybody was expecting. It is insane to think that a movie can be just like the book. The book is so full of subtle humor, there is no way that they could translate that into a movie format. I think that the movie caught the spirit of the book extremely well. It is the fun ridiculous universe that Douglas Adams introduced me to. If you are looking for something fun to watch, especially if you like british humor, you will love this movie. And if you are a lover of the book, don't shut it out just because it didn't live up to "what you would have done". Accept it as the classic commedy that it is. It was definately on my list of things to buy for my new blu-ray.

1 out of 5 stars Seek out the TV series or the Radio Play.......2007-07-12

This was truly, truly awful. It's not just that it wasn't "like" the original, it gutted the original, sucking out all of the bits that were the heart and soul of the humor. Poor Douglas Adams, to think that so many more people will think this was what all the fuss was about.

Please seek out the original (which was the radio play, btw) or the remake (the TV series) where Douglas Adams was in control of the material.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Panic! ... But be prepared to laugh.......2007-04-16

I absolutely loved this movie. The opening scene with the narator setting up the story and the dolphins is worth the price of the film alone.
I had to do research on the film to see if any of the Monty Python troupe was involved because it is the most "MontyPythonesque" movie I have ever seen, other than actual Monty Python films. Maybe the "Brits" just have the special touch with dark, sarcastic, human bashing humor.
Sam Rockwell made the movie and Alan Rickman did a great job.
By far, the funniest movie I have seen in quite a while.

I have since read the book and did not enjoy it, so perhaps that is why I enjoyed the movie where fans of Adams find the movie appalling. Just a thought.

Description

When a hopeful young American hot-dogger goes pole-to-pole with an arrogant Austrian pro, the snow really starts to fly! But as hot as it is on the mountain, it gets even hotter off when the pro's ex-girlfriend (Tweed) sets her eyes on the new blood. Who'll win the competition and the girl? Only a race to end all races can determine which skier can really cut the mustard!

5 out of 5 stars Howling good fun!!.......2007-04-06

The Movie that made me WANT to be a Skier!! I love this Movie!! Is it Oscarworthy? Not even close. But for just good escapist fun, there are not many movies that are better than this one. Yes, it is far more likely to appeal to Guys than Gals due to the T&A component. But, there is also some substance here in the Movie in the Skiing sequences. The Producers were smart enough to use real skiers to do the skiing sequences and the skiers they got were GREAT!! After you see it, who will ever forget Robbie Huntoon's stunt of skiing through the Lodge at the end of the "Chinese Downhill". The Movie now comes across as dated in lot of ways, it is VERY early 80's!! From the Music to the Ski Equipment, to even the Sport of Freestyle Skiing. Whatever did happen to Ballet Skiing anyway? However, our Freeriders of today will enjoy the Aerial Competition, (Handled by Skier Jeff Chumas), and they will be amazed at how different Mogul Skiing is now compared to then.

Then there is the party hardy aspect to what is happening. Having been a Professional Ski Bum at one point in my life, (not too far after Hot Dog came out), I can tell you they got the partying side of skiing RIGHT!!!

David Naughton does a terrific job in this movie. He also does much of the singing of the original songs that you hear in this movie. My favorite is "When you were mine". "American Werewolf in London" is a CLASSIC and in it's own way so is "Hot Dog the Movie".

I will tell you that if you are a Skier, and loved the wild raunchy side of the 80's this is a great Movie for you. If you like movies like "Bachelor Party" with Tom Hanks, you will love this movie.

It is what it is and to me "Hot Dog the Movie" is worth seeing ANYTIME!!!

4 out of 5 stars Cheezy movie!.......2007-03-18

Viewed this movie alot in collage (Go Blue)! Great beer drinking movie with friends!

5 out of 5 stars Ski Naked!.......2007-03-10

If you like to ski and party this is a classic. Not only are the ski scenes great, but if you've been around awhile you'll get a kick out of the equipment we use to use. My wife and I first went to Squaw Valley before we were married, and love to pick out places we remember. We watch this movie before every ski trip!

4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-03-08

This is a classic for any hardcore skier or random Gen Xer. I remember my friend RENTED A VCR so we could watch it. Many, many classic lines in here, and gratuitous nudity galore.

5 out of 5 stars What to watch before you ski the next day!.......2007-01-22

This movie is a classic! Used to watch it every friday night in the 80's before skiing the weekend in Tahoe. Since had lost the vhs tape. Could not beleive this is in DVD. The quality is not as high as it should be, you can tell it was taken from film to dvd and sound could be improved.

Cannot forget the International Chinese Downhill... and the song by Mitch Ryder "when you were mine" can't be found anywhere on line so this is your chance to get that classic sung by the Detroit Wheels.

Careful after watching this movie, your skiing ability will not actually increase but your enthusiasim for it will!

Good footage of Squaw Valley before the skate rink fell in and the awesome double diamond runs.

Italy's magical fantasy of midlife crisis and rebirth in Venice, the city of lovers, swept the Italian film awards and charmed all of Europe. Director Silvio Soldini turns the tourist mecca of piazzas, canals, and stone bridges into a quaint little village out of time and fills the film with the charm of the city and the gentle quirks of his delightful cast. Licia Maglietta is winning as Rosalba, the frustrated and ignored middle-aged mom who impulsively takes a vacation from her family. She hitchhikes to Venice and falls for lonely, suicidal Icelandic waiter-poet Bruno Ganz (whose soulful, sad eyes recall his fallen angel from Wings of Desire), blossoming as she rediscovers her smile and joy for life. Sweetly sexy and beautifully shot, this story of second chances may not be original or surprising (think Shirley Valentine), but it's no less lovely or enchanting for it. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars italian semi-romance.......2007-07-10

Good Italian movie. Enjoyed scenery and following the life of a Italian women unhappy with her married life and her great escape from loneliness to happiness.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Movie.......2007-07-07

I never heard of this movie but I took a chance. Sure glad I did. It's amusing, entertaining, and heartwarming. No special effects, stunts, or things getting blown up here - just a fun story with lovable characters.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed It!.......2007-06-29

An easy movie to love, the story of an Italian "haus frau" who after being left by her family on a bus tour decides to take her own vacation to Venice. Definitely a feel-good, romantic comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Only the Lonely.......2007-06-03

Our heroine Rosalba, an Italian housewife, is left behind in a bus stop ladies room, when the vacation tour bus with the rest of her family, including her lout of a husband, takes off. She decides to hitch hike as far as Venice. Rosalba hestitates and then decides to stay in Venice, taking a job in a little florist shop. And so begins the slow metamorphosis of a lonely woman.

She finds herself in a small apartment house along with other characters, each one forsaken in a their own way.Instead of a gray pall hanging over our story, beams of joy, quirky humor, and hope poke through.

One comes away sweetly startled over the meaning of family. We see that a group of strangers thrown and huddled together, can supercede the stale role playing, and overcome the meaness of life.

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-02-27

This is a great movie, and unfortantly being a foreign language film its not easy to find. I searched high and low to find this film to buy it for my mothers birthday. This is the only place I found.

Cheech & Chong's first cannabis comedy is also their best, a souvenir from the more carefree days before "Just Say No," when people did not feel so defensive about inhaling. In 1978, the prevailing spirit was more like "Just Say Blow." Even New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael liked it (the movie, that is), adding that it was "an exploitation slapstick comedy, rather than a family picture, such as Blazing Saddles or High Anxiety--which means that it's dirtier, wilder, and sillier." The story has to do with bumbling potheads Cheech & Chong searching for primo bud, while being tailed by a team of inept law-enforcement officers, led by Sgt. Stedenko (Stacy Keach). Sample dialogue: When a cop pulls them over to ask if they are any illegal substances in his vehicle, Cheech replies: "Not any more, man." Up in Smoke is an irresistibly silly and charming movie that--despite, or perhaps because of, the national furor over drug use--plays today like a relic from a bygone era, a sweeter, more open, more innocent period in our history. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC STONER COMEDY! FIRST AND BEST IN THE SERIES!.......2007-07-25

I saw this at the drive-in when it was first released! It was hilarious then and it is hilaious now! I watched the first 4 Cheech & Chongs films recently with my wife(a social drinker at best) and she thought they were very funny. They hold a lot more for me being a little more of a party animal(Hey I'm a musican). To my fellow musicans friends please don't start chimming in about how you never did any drinking etc. because of being in a band. The fact of the matter is, you are more inclined to do these things playing in bars all the time. OK? This is the first movie and the best in the series, but the next 3 movies are all excellent and funny! The DVD could use an upgrade.

4 out of 5 stars An old classic.......2007-07-13

Cheech and Chong are ... well ... Cheech and Chong. I have always disliked the Roxy scene, but the balance is a good romp. "It's excellent, of course. We loved it! We always have!" - my husband

One of the funniest movies ever made. I'm still using references from this movie to this day. The real sad thing is, with the PC world we live in today, we may never see another movie like it.
