Description

Patrick Stewart gives an outstanding performance in the title role of this high-spirited, new adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic tale of mystery, romance, and adventure. The fun begins as the unsuspecting Otis family moves into the stately, rambling rooms of Canterville Hall where young Virginia (Neve Campbell, "Party of Five") meets up with the castle's resident specter: the 400-year-old ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville (Stewart). But while Sir Simon does his moaning, chain-rattling best to frighten the newcomers, Virginia soon befriends him, and learns the sorrowful secret: unless a purehearted mortal agrees to plead his case before the dreaded "Angel of Death," Sir Simon will be doomed to haunt the Hall for all eternity. With the midnight moment of truth approaching, Virginia prepares for a journey into the unknown -- in a hair raising conclusion to this all-time favorite tale of ancient spirits, young love, and otherworldly adventures!

4 out of 5 stars A classic .......2007-08-27

This is a classic story in true Oscar Wilde wit and flair. It's both hautning and funny. It's a fairy tale for all ages. In this story a young American girl helps to free the tormented spirit that haunts an old English castle. It's very well written and a beautiful tale for all ages.

I have seen a couple of other versions of The Canterville Ghost, but neither of the two can TOUCH this version with Patrick Stewart. As one who started in and loves Shakespearean acting, Patrick Stewart lends to the Ghost a sorrow-filled, yet hopeful mood... Choose this one of any version out there. You WON'T be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully entertaining.......2003-03-31

Patrick Stewart's portrayal of the ghost was delightful and poignant and he wove into his role some Shakespeare which added depth. Neve Campbell was also exceptional as the young child who believed and shed her tears for the ghost's release.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-02-18

This movie is Wonderful! I love it! I am a huge Neve Campbell fan! She makes a great performance! It is a good film.

5 out of 5 stars I didn't expect to like it, but I did!.......2001-02-16

This is the kind of movie that my mother likes to watch, so I assumed the usual- a cheesy family film that would have silly plots and poor acting, BUT this movie doesn't fit that mold. I was amazed at how much I enjoyed it. Sure, it still has the cheesy family-oriented subplots (I thought the whole "rational explanation" bit was a little overplayed), but overall it's a very cool story and the acting was VERY good. Patrick Stewart was excellent, projecting just the right amounts of kindness and woe (alongside his mischevious midnight hauntings), Neve Campbell was very good (as usual) and I am now a very big Daniel Betts fan (too bad he hasn't done very many movies). It's a feel-good story- I highly recommend this movie!

3 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2007-06-28

People keep comparing it to other Lucio flicks but I liked it because it wasn't like the other Fulci flicks. One person on another site said it best calling it a fairy tale. It's a fairy tale but with dark overtones.
Still I really thought it was decent. Sort of like a "Tales of the Darkside" type of atmosphere with the parents being killed then coming back as ghosts and speaking to the kids (who are the only ones that see them while the relatives think they're nuts).

Acting was ok. There's even a few comedy moments in the film (guy's hand melting and the crane that has a mind of it's own, the old man whose a psychic, conjurer whatever he is confronting the spirits.

I think if you're in for a different type of movie from the director this is worth looking at. For me it's a type of love story that expands even through death.

5 out of 5 stars So BAD its GOOD.......2006-10-31

Don't be so easily put off by the critics! THIS IS NOT A TYPICAL FILM OF FULCI. If you are looking for THE BEYOND look elsewhere.

Imagine a kids film from the viewpoint of children laced with strong grahic violence with a surreal dream like quality and an underlying sadistic theme of revenge.

I have seen just over 30 of Fulci's films and this would be in my top 5. Don't miss it !

2 out of 5 stars What the hell............2005-03-07

I cant believe Lucio Fulci made this film, its with out a doubt his worst movie ever. The only good part is when the guy robbing the home gets his throat sliced. The whole movie I waited for Gore or action or something and it never came and that was dissapointing. Check it out if you find it for $5-$10 and $10 is to much but, its Fulci so I will keep it in my collection. A great Fulci flick is Zombi and The Beyond along with 2 more decent flicks being "house by the cemetary" and "City Of the Living Dead." but all 4 are worth the buy well to me atlest

1 out of 5 stars What Was He Thinking? .......2005-01-06

By far and away the WORST Lucio Fulci movie ever made. Luckily for me I rented this movie before I decided to add it to my collection. The description of the movie made it sound interesting enough to rent and being a big fan of the Fulci trademark movies I thought it would be pretty good. Sweet house of horrors has none of the trademark Fulci gore which was quite a let down not to the mention the movie is just absolutely a waste of time. By this point in his career I think Fulci just ran out of ideas and threw this together witout much effort. Even the trademark eyeball scene was sub par at best.

If you're a "HUGE" fan of Lucio Fulci and haven't seen this film I recommend strongly that you rent it first. If your looking for a good Fulci movie may I suggest "Zombie" or "The Beyond". Don't waste your time with this unimaginative, dull, pointless film. It's really that bad!

being a huge fan of lucio fulci, bought this to add to collection of his other dvds that i owned, bad mistake. The storyline is poor, and frankly is the worst he has ever made,no gore really apart from beginning, just a stupid idea.avoid it at all costs.

4 out of 5 stars Is this for real.......2006-06-13

Highly underated. This is a very hard core movie of an persons life which may be very differnt in all respects from anything that I have ever known. This is original as it gets and beware it may gross you out or kick you off your white fence and put you down and when you are down you will be freaky and when your freaky you will be groovey.

4 out of 5 stars Some good old fashioned exploitation fun.......2006-05-30

Since other reviewers have summarized Roger Watkin's life and the conditions for making the film, I will restrict my comments to certain aspects of the film itself. "Last House on Dead End Street" obviously has a reputation. I first learned of it in David Kerekes's phenomenal book, "Killing for Culture". After hearing some people speak of the film, one would expect nothing less than a snuff film. However, most people have not actually seen the film and are simply speculating. Anyone looking for extreme violence or gore is going to be disappointed. One can find much more gore in Herschell Gordon Lewis's hilarious "Wizard of Gore" or more violence in most big-budget Hollywood action pictures. The unique aspect of "Last House" is its gritty supposed "realism". How real it actually appears is up to the viewer. Perhaps it's easier for some to suspend their disbelief than others. Personally, I found it gritty, but just as unrealistic as any film.

The DVD is fairly expensive at around $30, so many are probably wondering if it's worth it. If you're fascinated by the obscure and bizarre or enjoy exploitation movies with absolutely no production values, then you'll appreciate this. Consider yourself warned - there is some absolutely abysmal acting within. The camera work is pretty terrible, the film stock is cheap, the lighting keeps certain scenes from showing much detail, and the script, at times, makes absolutely no sense. But, this is all beside the point. Any fan of this type of movie will love it for these faults. Forget Mystery Science Theater 3000. This movie is funny enough without Mike (or Joel) and the robots. I've noticed other reviewers complaining about the lack of production values. These people, while entitled to their own opinions, have completely missed the point. This movie is supposed to be bad. That's why it's so fun.

To summerize. "Last House on Dead End Street" is fairly violent and gory, but won't disturb the seasoned exploitation film fan. Mainstream views beware - this is probably not something you'll enjoy. For the curious, definitely check it out.

1 out of 5 stars Last House on Dead end Street or: I Flunked out of Film College and Made This.......2006-04-03

really, this film REEKS of failed film student for the whole, what was it? 70 minutes? (cut down from around 180)

i understand it's the director's idea of some sort of social commentary, but it just comes off as nothing more than a pathetic attempt to freak out the establishment.

there are films that depict a society on the edge of depravity that can actually leave an impact on you (Cannibal Holocaust, Salo, Cronenberg's Crash.) but this one just flops over and over like a fish out of water, only to eventually die and leave behind a horrible smell.

1 out of 5 stars In a Word, Bad.......2006-03-22

Four letters: L-A-M-E. I'm so sick and tired of "forgotten horror classics" that cost 20 dollars just to watch. Luckily, I got this one through a free two-week trial with NetFlix. It was, essentially, worth what I paid for it. Some horror flicks that didn't do very well at the box office (Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse, Don't Go in the House, etc.) are really overlooked gems. This one sucks. Don't listen to anyone else.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting horror movie by Roger Watkins.......2004-08-18

"Last House on Dead End Street" was a movie that achieved
popularity due to the fact that it was put in the same
breath as "Last House on the Left" by Wes Craven, but
thats about where the similarites end. This movie
is not a revenge movie as seen through the victims like Wes's
hit, no it's actually seen through the protaganists view.

Roger Watkins directs and stars as a madman who is released
from prison and vows to take revenge on society or so he says.
However he instead chooses to kill his former friends and
cohorts who may have stole some of his film ideas. He
then plots an absurd plot where he makes the best snuff films.
Yes thats part of the urban legend, but this is not a snuff
film. What it is though is one disturb, at times hilarious
spoof of other wannabee snuff films.

What the movie is missing is the fact that in "Last House
on the Left" we dont have any reversal of fortune between
the victim and murderers, instead the movie chooses one
direction and stays there, so nothing is really
a surprise.

The two disc dvd is a bit of a keeper , you get commentary
by Watkins who calls himself an outcast of sorts, his rare
short films and rare footage in a day with Roger Watkins.
