A gut-wrenching portrait of adolescence, Thirteen is made all the more powerful because it was co-written by a genuine teenage girl, Nikki Reed, who also co-stars in the movie. Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood), a serious good student, finds herself needing to express her anger and resentment at her fractured family life. To rebel, she pursues a friendship with the reckless, alluring Evie (Reed), who seems to have all the cocksure freedom that Tracy desires. What follows is both harrowing and compelling: Tracy becomes enmeshed in a relationship with Evie that empowers Tracy and drags her deeper into the misery she wants to escape--and terrifies her mother (Holly Hunter), who struggles desperately to hold on to her daughter's love. Thirteen makes every step on this path utterly convincing, due to the vivid script, energized direction, and astonishingly alive performances from Hunter, Reed, and especially Wood. Jolting, sad, and mesmerizing. --Bret Fetzer
Description
"Brace yourself" (Rolling Stone) for a raw, revealing insight into urban adolescence that's so intense and realistic, "it's possible to turn away (Interview Magazine). Anxiously trying to fit into the peer-pressure cooker environment of junior high, thirteen-year-old Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood) goes to shocking lengths in order to befriend Evie (co-writer Nikki Reed), the most popular girl in school. Now the two are inseparable - and incorrigible - leaving Tracy's desperate mom (Academy Award winner Holly Hunter) powerless to rescue her from a whirlwind of drugs, sex and crime.

Wraped up........2007-07-17
Thirteen is a movie about how a young teenage girl, seeks the attention of another more popular girl at her school. She wants to befriend this girl, and does out of character things to achieve this goal. I think that this movie portrays peer dependency accurately. Many young adolescents find themselves doing things they never would have until their "friends" came along. I think that this movie shows that the girls are doing drugs, sneaking out, hooking up with boys is typical. It might seem extreme in this movie but, I think thats exactly how it is. However I must say that in this movie the girls are in seventh grade, whereas maybe they should have been a little older. If they had set the girls at an older age they could have shown how they know older kids which means access to more stuff. They could have also even show how high-school students use their cars to hotbox or hook up. Showing the more graphic lifestyle of teens is easier if they are older. However this was indeed a great movie!
Tragic, heartbreaking and strong, a film that dares to be heard and deserves to be applauded... .......2007-07-02
The first time I watched `thirteen' I was stunned at how brutally honest a film it was. It's so easy for Hollywood to sugar-coat reality to make it accessible but here that is far from the case. In it's honesty though it never crosses the line in becoming so overtly dramatic and edgy that it comes across forced and in other words Hollywoodized. `thirteen' stays true and relatable and effortlessly absorbing. While watching the film I found my heart invested in the story, in the characters and in their eventuality. I really cared for everyone involved in different ways and for different reasons. The cast, I should immediately point out, is so brilliant here that they really help keep this film true to form and each actress adds layers of honesty to her performance.
Evan Rachel Wood blew me away with her performance as Tracy Freeman. Tracy is your average thirteen year old girl. She's awkward around boys, teased at school, distant from the popular girls, estranged from her parents, longing to be accepted by her peers as well as her father. Her whole life seems a waste. Her mother Melanie is a recovering alcoholic who damages her family with her choice of male companions but who is genuinely trying to make things good again for her children. Tracy's father is never around to lend a hand in the matter and can't seem to find the time in his schedule to give his daughter the attention she needs. In order to vent her frustration and find some control Tracy resorts to smoking and cutting.
Tracy them meets Evie Zamora, the popular girl in school. She's overly sexual, malicious and dangerous and these qualities immediately draw Tracy in. She begins to conform to Evie's standards and a shift begins to take place in Tracy's attitude and her actions. Melanie, the maternal instinct kicking in, spots this change early on but is unable to take evasive action. Evie's family life is tragic as well. Her parents are no where to be seen and her cousin who acts as her guardian is so uninvolved and lenient with Evie that her behavior, as drastic and outlandish as it is, is welcomed, even encouraged. Melanie sees this and feels almost guilted into accepting this girl, a girl who gets no real love and attention elsewhere. While Tracy distances herself further from her mother, Evie uses this opportunity to attach herself, reaching out to that motherly concern, love and guidance she's lacked all her life.
The film spirals down to a breathtaking ending that resolves much and brings to the fore true intentions. It's beautifully scripted by director Catherine Hardwicke and co-star Nikki Reed, who plays Evie. Reed is tragic as Evie, really captures the essence of this girl lost in the shuffle and her breakdown in the end of this film is beautifully captured in all its raw reality. Her character finally emerges in truth and honesty before everyone's eyes and as her exposure is made clear the sheer brilliance of her performance is made manifest as well. Holly Hunter well deserved her Oscar nomination. Her portrayal of Melanie is sincere and heartbreaking. But no one here deserves more praise than Evan Rachel Wood who devours her role and delivers such tempered and controlled emotions, delivering believability and honesty in each brilliantly calculated move. Watching her character transform in each scene is effortless and captivating.
`thirteen' may be hard to stomach sometimes, especially if you're a parent, and even more so if you are a parent of a young daughter. As much as it may remain difficult I feel it's also very important that you force yourself through it. It exposes quite well the dangers surrounding young girls today, from the desires and pressures to conform to your peers and the enticing effects of drugs, alcohol and sex, vices that are becoming more and more accessible to kids of younger and younger ages. Directed with equal measures grit and concern, `thirteen' is a landmark film that sheds a much needed light on the dangers of adolescence and is one of the more moving and socially important films of the past decade. By far the greatest film of 2003.
Must seen if you like messed up movies.......2007-04-15
I definitly reccomend this as a buy, because its the scary truth. Awesome flick, great acting.

Amazing and True.......2007-04-13
I have an old friend that went through this exact same situation(s). This movie was amazing, true, and eye-opening. This is what happens in real life and it is all real...there is nothing fake about it. This is the best realistic movie about teenage girls that I have ever seen in my life! Nothing else compares to this. The cinematography is amazing; the movie is done very, very well. I can't say how much this movie hit home or otherwise - it is just great and it is truely my favorite movie ever!
10 out of 5 stars for Thirteen!
Awful...........2007-03-09
I do not understand how anyone could rate this trite piece of garbage 5 stars. The story was predictable, and the script was boring and forced. The movie had some scenes with shock value, but I didn't watch it to see fourteen year old girls getting undressed, and forcing themselves upon people. I was hoping it would be along the lines of kids, but nowhere near the intensity of that movie. The characters in this movie are two dimensional, which makes the movie even more unbeleivable. Maybe I'm being harsh, but I expected a LOT better from the other reviews I read.

Jane Austen's wonderful novel has been adapted to the screen many times, with this 1940 version representing the golden age of the Hollywood studio era. Greer Garson, then just on the cusp of her stardom, plays the headstrong Elizabeth Bennet, smartest of five daughters who must be married off. Laurence Olivier is that difficult fellow Mr. Darcy, whose mulishness about the Bennet girls begins to thaw when he gets a dose of Elizabeth's sense and sensibility. The film is done up in the glamorous MGM house style, which means we're stuck with the less-than-inspired direction of Robert Z. Leonard (The Great Ziegfeld), redeemed somewhat by a collection of handsome sets (Cedric Gibbons and Paul Groesse won the Oscar for Interior Decoration) and the dandy photography by Karl Freund, one of the greats. Anyone accustomed to the 1995 miniseries version of Pride and Prejudice will need to adjust to the swifter demands of a two-hour movie, and to be sure this version, like the 2005 Keira Knightley remake, simplifies some of Austen's scenes. It's one of the few films, by the way, with Aldous Huxley as a credited screenwriter. Edmund Gwenn is lovely as Mr. Bennet, and Mary Boland brash as Mrs. Bennet; Garson, although MGM liked to corset her in fine-lady roles, manages to let Elizabeth's sauciness come through. Actually, the movie's weak spot is Laurence Olivier's elaborate performance as Darcy, which feels too theatrical. Not that it matters; Austen's story is so good, the film sails through to its delicious finish with all flags flying. --Robert Horton
Description
Like the arrows she launches at an archery target during an elegant lawn party, Elizabeth Bennet's wit is pointed and unerring. "If you want to be really refined, you have to be dead," she says, skewering the imperious airs of her hosts. Jane Austen's timeless 1813 novel of unlikely romance is richly adapted in this lavish Academy Award? winner.* Greer Garson portrays spirited Elizabeth, one of five Bennet sisters hoping for matrimony. Laurence Olivier plays Darcy, whose arrival at a nearby estate sets maiden hearts aflutter. But first impressions can mean so very much. Elizabeth and Darcy find reasons to view each other with disdain, setting in motion a velvet struggle of Pride and Prejudice, perception and reality, forgiveness and love. You'll be irresistibly caught up in it.

Pride and Prejudice .......2007-09-17
If you are a true Jane Austin fan, you will not like this adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Just when you think the script is taken from the book, they deviate and say the most ridiculous thing. The acting is primitive and the costumes do not match the time period. They condensed a whole book into the happenings of one day!
Not perfect, but still thoroughly enjoyable. .......2007-09-16
I am a "woman of a certain age," and this was the very first adaptation of P&P I'd ever seen. And, until 1980, it was the only adaptation I'd ever seen (for any lurking Brits, I know full well that the Beeb had already produced several adaptations, but none of those made it over here until the Garvie/Rintoul version in 1980 [still my favorite]). I remember seeing it in the TV listings as being on in the middle of the night and, in the days before VCRs, I would set my alarm clock and sneak downstairs to watch it. Yes, it's THAT entertaining.
I like Edmund Gwenn as Mr. Bennet, and Edna May Oliver is fabulous as Lady Catherine (the script is not her fault, after all!). Maureen O'Sullivan is a lovely Jane. Bruce Lester's Bingley is a true gentleman and not a stereotypical upper-class twit. Frieda Inescort's Miss Bingley is wonderfully nasty.
But it is Greer Garson who, for me, steals the show. As has been pointed out by other reviewers, Jane Austen tells us that Elizabeth had "a mixture of sweetness and archness in her manner which made it difficult for her to affront anybody." Going by Austen's own comments, I have to say that Colin Firth's Darcy would have to be deaf, dumb and blind to not see that Jennifer Ehle's Elizabeth hated him with a passion. But Olivier's Darcy has the same reaction as Jane Austen's Darcy -- he is entranced by Elizabeth and falls head over heels in love with her. That said, my main criticism of Olivier's Darcy is that we, the audience, see right away how crazy he is about her. In the book, we are as surprised as Elizabeth is when he proposes to her. But I can live with that.
Yes, the costumes are all wrong. Yes, Lady Catherine's "180" at the end is all wrong, but the movie itself is still a delight.
VERY LOOSELY based on the novel!.......2007-08-29
Jane Austen would be turning over in her grave if she knew what this film adaptation had done to her brilliant novel. The characters' names are the same, but nearly every plot detail is so different from Jane Austen's original story as to be nearly unrecognizable. Most of Jane Austen's sparkling dialogue is missing from the characters' flat conversations, and the ladies' dresses are fashions that Jane Austen never saw in her time. Any devoted fan of the novel must be disgusted by this Hollywood mutilation of an excellent story.
Great quality DVD.......2007-07-31
Finally this movie came out on DVD. It was the first version I ever saw so maybe I am prejudiced, no pun intended, but it is very well done.
What Chemistry!.......2007-07-26
The Garson/Olivier version of Pride and Prejudice has to be one of my favorite movies ever. The chemistry that Greer Garson and Lawrence Olivier had on screen was fantastic. I've always watched this movie whenever Turner Classic Movies had it on. I'm glad it finally came out on DVD.

Amazon.com essential video
When it comes to long-awaited treats like The Marx Brothers Collection, you can never get too much of a good thing. These seven comedies can't compare to the sheer lunacy of the five classics (The Cocoanuts, Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, Horse Feathers, and Duck Soup) that the Marx Bros. made for Paramount between 1929 and 1933 (available in The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection), but when uber-producer Irving Thalberg signed Groucho, Harpo, and Chico to an MGM contract in 1935 (by which time sibling costar Zeppo had become the team's off-screen manager), he knew just how to cure their box-office blues. As a result, A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races were critical and commercial hits, lavishly produced according to the "Tiffany" studio's golden-age formula of glamorous set pieces and musical numbers combined with sensible plots that smoothly integrated snappy, well-written Marxian antics. Opera is the jewel of this set, with timeless scenes (the Stateroom, the Groucho-Chico contract negotiation, etc.) that rank among the greatest bits of silver-screen comedy... not to mention Groucho's flirtatious insults at Margaret Dumont's upper-crust expense.
A Day at the Races deserves near-equal acclaim ("Get-a your tootsie-fruitsie ice cream!"), but Thalberg's death in 1937 dealt a devastating blow, and the Marxes suffered from studio indifference, resulting in a succession of comedies that are timelessly enjoyable even as they fall prey to diminishing returns. By the time they made Go West and The Big Store, the Marxes were out of their element, and a few of the musical interludes indulge racial stereotypes that were common in the studio era. Despite this, these movies remain fresh and frantic, and Warner Bros. (holder of the RKO and MGM libraries) has done a marvelous job of packaging The Marx Brothers Collection to nostalgically approximate the filmgoing experience of the 1930s and '40s, with vintage shorts (Our Gang, Robert Benchley comedies, MGM cartoons, etc.) from the time of each feature's original release. Archival materials are slim but worthwhile (especially Groucho's 1961 interview with TV talk-show host Hy Gardner), and while Glenn Mitchell's commentary on Races is sparse and superficial, Leonard Maltin brings his usual superfan's enthusiasm and encyclopedic knowledge to bear on a full-length Opera commentary track. The new documentaries are somewhat redundant, but essential viewing for Marx Bros. neophytes. With all seven films presented in pristine condition, this is definitely a Marx Brothers Collection worth having. --Jeff Shannon
Description
This set includes seven of only thirteen Marx Brothers films ever made! Collection includes: "A Night at the Opera" (1935) - The Marx Brothers turn Mrs. Claypool's opera into chaos in their efforts to help two young hopefuls get a break. It contains the famous scene where Groucho, Chico and Harpo cram a ship's stateroom with wall-to-wall people, gags, one-liners, musical riffs and two hard-boiled eggs. "A Day at the Races" (1937) - Groucho stars as Hugo Z. Hackenbush, a horse veterinarian dispensing horse pills and quips with equal glee. Chico selling racing tips, Harpo destroying a piano to turn it into a harp and favorite foil actress Margaret Dumont make this thoroughbred comedy wall-to-wall hilarity. "A Night in Casablanca" (1946) - This parody of the Bogart/Bergman 1943 classic features the Nazis vs. the "nutsies" as the Marx Brothers foil Axis criminals when they find stolen jewels and paintings Nazis have hidden in a hotel. "Room Service"/"At the Circus" - These two films are combined on one disc to provide double doses of laughter. In "Room Service" (1938), Lucille Ball and Ann Miller provide comic co-star support while the Marx Brothers play producers trying to keep their show above water and a hotel room over their head. In "At the Circus" (1939) Groucho stars as professional shyster lawyer J. Cheever Loophole in the middle of big-top bedlam as the boys try to save the circus and look to Margaret Dumont for the money to do so. Groucho sings one of his famous songs, "Lydia the Tattooed Lady." "Go West"/"The Big Store" - Another Marx Brothers twin bill makes this a hilarious comedy "two-fer." In the first, the Marxmen "Go West" (1940) to the land of outlaws and Indians where the fun never stops and where they outwit a land grabber. In "The Big Store" (1941), Groucho plays Attorney Wolf J. Flywheel who with sidekick Wacky (Harpo) and bodyguard Ravelli (Chico) are investigating the shady dealings of a crooked department store owner. Bonus extras include commentary by Leonard Maltin.
Customer Reviews:
A lot of laughs here.......2007-09-11
This set features the 3 Marx Brothers - Zeppo had left by this time. The first 2 films they did after Zeppo left are both 5 star classics. "Night at the Opera" is famous for its stateroom scene and Chico selling Groucho all the racing programs he'll need in "Day at The Races" are true classics. "Room Service" was not specifically written for the Marx Brothers and it's really not that good for a Marx Brothers movie- 3 stars. "Go West", "At the Circus" and "A Night in Casablanca" are all pretty good although not great- all in the 3.5 to 4 star area, better than "Room Service" but not the equal of their earlier classics. One of the problems with these movies is that MGM put in too much (bad) singing and dancing and less Marx Brothers comedy into these movies. The Brothers were always funny but they were at their best when not weighted down by too many characters and songs that no one cared to hear.
All in all- 4 stars. Some great ones, some very good ones and one just okay movie here.
An honest to goodness classic comedy!!!!!!.......2007-06-14
If you want a good clean entertainment and a good laugh, and a classic fun, then the Marx Brothers are for you.
Classics.......2007-05-24
By today's standards, these films are fairly slow-paced in places. Even some of the jokes seem lame in contrast to today's vulgarity. But if you've never seen the Marx Bros at the top of their game, you've gotta see this collection. Fast forward through the occasional sappy romantic bits if you must. Savor the interaction between Harpo and Chico and Groucho. I promise you'll laugh.
still laughing.......2007-05-13
The best of the Marx Brothers comes alive into our living room . I laughed when I was a kid , and now when my Grandchildren come over , they want to watch the Marx Brothers, and I still laugh at their satire . It's as funny now as it was back in my younger years . I'm glad my Grandchildren love them , and I hope their Grandchildren love the Marx Brothers also . It's hard to find good clean entertainment now days , and these movies are classics . I recommend the Marx Brothers for anyone who needs a laugh , and an afternoon for good entertainment .

The Marvelous Marx Brothers Collection!.......2007-03-31
This collection showcases some of the Marx Brothers' biggest film hits. Kitty Carlisle (who was a guest on television's "What's My Line?" in the 1960s) does her own operatic singing in "A Night at the Opera." She is interviewed, with Dom DeLuise and others, in a DVD featurette included in this collection, and talks about that wild, wonderful association with the Brothers. An interview with Groucho Marx reveals the true story of what happened in producer Irving Thalberg's office when he made the mistake of keeping the brothers waiting too long for scheduled meetings! These movies are classics and give today's "movies" more than a run for their money! Well worth ordering, viewing, and treasuring forever.

This movie has a checkered history, having been chopped from its original 227-minute director's cut to 139 minutes for its U.S. release. This longer edition benefits from having the complete story (the short version has huge gaps) about turn-of-the-century Jewish immigrants in America finding their way into lives of crime, as told in flashback by an aging Jewish gangster named Noodles (Robert De Niro). On the other hand, it's almost four hours long, and this sometimes-indulgent Sergio Leone film is no Godfather. Still, it is notable for the contrast between Leone's elegiac take on the gangster film and his occasional explosive action, as well as for the mix of the stoic, inexpressive De Niro and the hyperactive James Woods as his lifelong friend and rival. --Marshall Fine

Make Some Time.......2007-09-03
Once you start watching this movie you can't stop. DeNiro and James Woods are gangsters growing up in New York. One of the best movies I have scene which marks the passage of time.
Corey Cotta, Author of All of Yesterdays Tomorrows
a classic.......2007-08-05
his is an epic, episodic tale of the lives of a small group of New York City Jewish gangsters spanning over 40 years. The movie centers on David 'Noodles' Aaronson (Robert De Niro) and his lifelong partners in crime, Max (James Woods), Cockeye (William Forsythe) and Patsy (James Hayden) and their friends, who all grew up in New York's Lower East Side in the 1920s-1930s. In the late 1960s, an elderly Noodles returns to New York after many years in hiding to look into the past.
Told mostly in flashbacks and flash-forwards, this film is a classic that has us discover great actors, including Jennifer Connelly and Brian Bloom. It features a great cast, like Danny Aiello and Joe Pesci.
One of the masterpieces in film history worth watching.
If you have 4 hours to spare, take your time to watch it. It's worth it - at least once in your lifetime - for the cinematography, the acting, the music, and the directing.
Has there ever been a longer movie?.......2007-07-15
Well, sure. Several.
This movie is looong, and while it deserves to be seen in one sitting, that's not likely.
It's the standard rise-of-a-mob story, enhanced and improved, and even elevated, by the performances of De Niro, Pesci, Woods, and a cast of hundreds.
I admire this film way more than I actually like it. I'm not sure it needs to be owned; rented, perhaps.
Still, it needs to be viewed at least once by anyone who actually loves movies.
Haunting and Brilliant. .......2007-06-19
This is an unbelievably beautiful story which is multi-layered and textured to a great extent. Yes, it certainly is a gangster movie and it also is a love story; although, one about as politically incorrect as they come. Both aspects of the film are conceptually executed well. I can't say the same thing about many of its technical aspects, however. At 3:45, this movie is far too long and moves too slow. It could easily have been just as good if an hour had been cut out of it. Furthermore, Sergio Leone is no Martin Scorsese. There's an element of amateurism inherent to the production as the reunion of Elizabeth McGovern and DeNiro is rendered ridiculous as he was an old man despite her not aging a day after 35 years.
Once Upon a Time in America is a very unique film as unlike a Goodfellas or Casino it is rich in sentimentality and the effect is mesmerizing but also very depressing. Ennio Morricone's musical score adds to the film's melancholic feel. It's not the type of thing you can see more than a couple of times but there's no denying that it's excellent.
LONG AND DRAWN OUT.......2007-06-13
WITH AN ALLSTAR CAST YOU WOULD THINK IT WOULD BE SUPER. BUT IT'S NOTHING MORE THAN A SLEEPER. THIS MOVIE WAS TERRIBLE! I FELT TORTURED SITTING THROUGH THIS BOMB! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS ONE.

Elia Kazan's pedal-to-the-metal approach to psychosexual melodrama paid off handsomely when he had layered material by Tennessee Williams or John Steinbeck to work with. The very raw material here is an original by hot-blooded playwright William Inge, about a pair of teenagers in the American Midwest in the 1920s whose lives are ruined by the repressive sexual climate of the period. The girl, played by Natalie Wood, is literally driven batty by her pent-up adolescent lust and ends up in the bin---which admittedly plays better than sounds, because the hunk she yearns for is the young and almost impossibly handsome Warren Beatty. This is a very lush and beautiful movie, but also a deeply silly one. It's grade-A American cheese, with a pinch of dime-store Freud on top.--David Chute

THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION IN THE 1960'S IS ABOUT TO BEGIN WITH SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS! .......2007-08-29
I am writing a review on the legendary historic breakthrough movie entitled "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" starring two of Hollywood's all-time greatest movie icons ever. I give you the multi-talented and always beautiful, the late great NATALIE WOOD and the young star that would be born and introduced to the entire world as WARREN BEATTY. "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" was originally released in 1961 by Warner Brothers.
When I watch "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" today, it is extremely hard to believe that this is how our parents and our grandparents actually grew up and lived. This is our elders in their youth living by the old-fashioned values that their parents were brought up believing in. To many of you, this movie may seem like a bore, but in reality, look how far moviemaking has come. Please remember that this movie was made and released in 1961. This is exactly what I meant when I stressed in many of my other NATALIE WOOD movie reviews that NATALIE was the barrier between the old-fashioned actresses of yesterday and the independent and liberated actresses of today. Nothing could have proved this theory more than the movie "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS." This movie is actually NATALIE WOOD screaming out of her shell on the screen and daring to be independent and liberated on behalf of all of the women in the world. "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" was truly far ahead of its time.
In the 1960's, movies really beat around the bush or hid many sexual subject matters in the closet. In a way, "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" was an attempt in bringing these sexual subject matters out of the closet before our very eyes. To make it short, "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" is about the sexual tension building up between two youths (Or virgins) that do not understand how they feel especially since the two have never had a sexual experience together. The movie actually explores the sexual frustration between the two who feel dirty thinking impure thoughts about sex. The two never had a chance considering the wrong advise that the two youths were getting from their parents. In today's society, it is acceptable to have sex before marriage. When our parents and grandparents were growing up, their parents mandated and raised them to have sex after they are married. In a way, "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" is the most breakthrough movie as far as giving birth to the sexual revolution in the 1960's. Also, what "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" did for the youth movement in the 1960's is what "THE WILD ONE" and "REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE" did in the 1950's. These legendary movies would all singlehandedly give birth to the liberation and independence of the youth movement.
As for the acting in "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS," NATALIE WOOD was magnificent! You can see by her acting roles that she was ready to blossom and come of age by coming out of her closet and shock us even more with her more daring and complex roles. "REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE" prepared WOOD for "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS." "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" would prepare WOOD as an independent and liberated actress to tackle roles in movies such as "LOVE WITH A PROPER STRANGER," "GYPSY," "WEST SIDE STORY," "SEX & THE SINGLE GIRL" and "BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE" to name a few.
"SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" would introduce an actor that was then a newcomer in the world of moviemaking. In a way, NATALIE WOOD gave us WARREN BEATTY. BEATTY'S good looks and charm was irresistible to every woman in the entire world including WOOD herself. Wow, what I wouldn't give to be WARREN BEATTY at that very moment. The chemistry between WOOD and BEATTY on and off screen is the real Hollywood stuff that is made of legend.
If you haven't seen this movie yet, please find a way and watch this movie somehow. When you see this movie, you will realize how made we really have it today as far as expressing ourselves freely and discussing sexual subject matters in the open as compared to hiding it in the closet like it was in the past. In a way, "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" opened the doors for all of the other movies that were yet to come. In my opinion, "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" is one of the very few movies that would contribute in giving birth to the sexual revolution in the 1960's that the youths can relate with. Believe it or not, even the youths of today can identify with it. "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS" besides "REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE," really put NATALIE WOOD on the Hollywood map forever. So here's to you NATALIE and WARREN. I will always love you NATALIE. May you always rest in peace. Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that you will continue in reading all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. NATALIE WOOD FOREVER! R.I.P. NATASHA NIKOLAEVNA ZACHARENKO A.K.A. NATALIE WOOD, Born 20 July 1938, Died 27 November 1981 at age 43. Forever in Entertainment, John L.
A Star is Born.......2007-06-12
Natalie Woods play a excellent part of a young High School girl in love with her High School sweetheart, played by Warren Beatty(screen debut)torn by beening respected by her mother's wishes and her human desires. This movie moved her from a child actress to a major player in the movie industry in adult roles.
Splendor alright.......2007-05-28
Splendor in the grass is a wonderful old Hollywood film. It's no wonder that Natalie Wood was a "million mens" dreamgirl. She is breath-taking and multi-dimensional in this film. The acting is emotional, and the actions cliff hanging in this beautiful story of love and letting go. It's a must see for anyone who loves old Hollywood classics.
Splendor in the Grass.......2007-05-07
I enjoyed this movie very much seeing natalie and warren in their youth and artistry was what made the movie so engrossingl.

A wonderful movie about a child, her mom and Santa Claus, yes I still believe.
Another classic.......2007-06-27
This is another classic movie of which I have more than one version. I do enjoy this version's "Kris Kringle" very much and Natalie Wood was fantastic as Susan. Maureen O'Hara made a great mother and the story speaks for itself, if you believe. . . .
Miracle on 34th Street.......2007-06-25
Was there ever a better big-screen Santa than Oscar winner Edmund Gwenn? This timeless Christmas fable about an elderly retiree who sets New York a-twitter with his claim to be the sleigh-riding patron saint of the North Pole captures the spirit of the season like few other holiday films. Young Natalie Wood is delightful as the disbelieving girl who, hewing to her mother's urban sophisticate views, thinks the notion of elves and Saint Nick is preposterous. Repeat viewings won't diminish the charming allure or the endearing message of "Miracle."

One more terrific film from a terrific year for movies--1939, the year of Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, and Stagecoach, among others--Sam Wood's Goodbye Mr. Chips is a deeply stirring work starring Robert Donat as the old schoolmaster who looks back upon his life. Told mostly in flashbacks, the film wraps itself around a history of an older England as seen through the generations of boys who pass through Mr. Chips's classroom. Greer Garson is her usual classy, sexy-intelligent self as Donat's wife, their earlier courtship one of the film's highlights. Get out the Kleenex for this one. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:
A most touching, delightful story--not at all mawkish.......2007-07-18
Weary? Jaded? Read "Goodbye, Mr. Chips." This short novel (just over 100 pages), written by James Hilton in 1934, is a wonderful work of literature-wonderful because in the hands of a lesser writer it would have been mawkish. But Hilton's portrayal of a beloved English schoolmaster is genuinely touching.
The story begins in 1870, with note taken that it was the year that the Franco-Prussian War began. A young Mr. Chipping (he is never given a first name) applies for a teaching position at Brookfield, an English public school for boys (actually private, as the British have a thing about labeling private schools public ones). He is a young man of 22 with only one year of teaching experience at another school; he is accepted for the position and thereafter is only known as Mr. Chips, or more often just plain Chips by everyone, schoolboys and fellow masters alike.
Chips was a shy type who remained a bachelor for 48 years, but in 1896 on a holiday trip to England's Lake District he met and immediately fell in love with a young woman, Katherine Bridges, age 25. Shortly thereafter they were married and she returned with him to Brookfield.
=He had never met anyone like her. He had always thought that the modern type, this "new woman" business would repel him; and here she was...And she, too, had never met anyone like him. She had always thought that middle-aged men who read the Times and disapproved of modernity were terrible bores; yet here he was, claiming her interest and attention far more than youths of her own age.=
Chips's new wife was an instant hit at Brookfield, she was genuinely admired by everyone. Her entry into his life profoundly affected his whole being.
=She made him, to all appearances, a new man...His eyes gained sparkle...He began to feel a greater sureness...When he had first come to Brookfield he had aimed to be loved, honored, and obeyed-but obeyed, at any rate. Obedience he had secured, and honor had been granted him; but only now came love, the sudden love of boys for a man who was kind without being soft...=
Tragically, only two years after their marriage Katherine died during childbirth, along with their child.
During the following 35 years the story is filled with Chips's good-natured day-to-day life with his boys-he taught the sons of many of his earlier boys. In the style at English public schools of the era, he addressed his boys by their last name. Most of the time he was a mild-mannered man, but on occasion he could get his back up: when a new headmaster by the name of Ralston tried to sack him for being too old-fashioned and out of touch with modern methods of pedagogy, he stood his ground.
"I don't-umph--intend to resign-and you can-umph-do what you like about it."
(The "umph", a sort of throat clearing, was always part of his speech.) When some of his boys got wind of the situation, they wrote about it to their fathers, some of whom had been his earlier boys. These fathers, and some other influential men, saw to it that Chips would not be made to resign. In fact, Ralston himself left because of the incident.
Chips's remembrances of his former boys who died in battle during the Boer War and, later, the first World War are beautiful.
Finally, in 1933, at age 85, his life comes to an end. For twenty years he had been living in quarters very near Brookfield and cared for by his landlady, Mrs. Wickett. In his last moments he reflects on his too brief life with Katherine and on his many experiences at Brookfleld, mostly with the generations of his boys.
=And, for that matter, (he thought of) the things he had not done, and would never do now that he had left them too late-he had never traveled by air, for instance, and he had never been to a talkie-show.=
Then he falls off into an eternal sleep. The previous night a boy named Linford had called on Chips at his rooms (Chips encouraged his boys to drop by to chat).
"Brookfield will never forget his lovableness," said Cartwright (the current headmaster) in a speech to the School. Which was absurd, because all things are forgotten in the end. But Linford, at any rate, will remember and tell the tale: "I said good-bye to Chips the night before he died..."
It is said that Hilton wrote the story in four days, basing it on his father, who had been a headmaster at an English school such as Brookfield. It was made into a movie in 1938 starring Robert Donat as Mr. Chips and again in the 1970's for television by a British producer.
To return to what Chips realized that he had not done, it should be remembered that most people in 1933 hadn't flown in a plane, and probably there were also a fair number who hadn't been to a "talkie."
Thinking of Mr. Chips reminds me of a professor I had in college; just like Mr. Chips, he addressed students by their surname (without Mr. or Ms.). Upon learning of his retirement some years later, I sent him a note for the occasion, to which he replied:
Dear Pinnix:
I want to thank you most deeply for your kind letter in regard to my retirement. It makes me happy to know that you think kindly of me and of our days together...I can sincerely reciprocate and assure you of the memory of your being in my classes. It is the appreciation of boys like you that make a teacher's life seem worthwhile...
Most affectionately yours,
Goodbye Mr. Chips, the original.......2007-06-20
A nostalgic paean to Old England and a deeply affecting story of honorable service, "Chips" succeeds admirably, mainly due to British actor Donat's touching performance. Donat broke "Gone with the Wind"'s Academy Award sweep in 1939, stealing the Best Actor statuette from under Clark Gable's nose. In addition, beautiful English ingénue Garson became an overnight star in the small but pivotal role of Chips's enchanting wife. Though sentimental by today's standards, this is a grand and moving classic for the ages.
A great classic.......2007-04-29
Almost two hours that go unnoticed.
A film on education as it used to be in the good old times, at least in good old England. "Robert Donat portrays a stiff, unpopular schoolmaster converted by love into an inspirational molder of lives." Mr. Chipps, an old-fashioned man, represents tradition; he wins the respect of his students but misses their affection, just as in his private life. This failure will be solved by the appearance of Greer Garson, just the right woman for him. She will be the inspiration that he needed. Greer Garson does here a magnificent part. She fits Mr. Chips' personality so well that her absence from the film so many minutes really makes one miss her. It would seem pretty difficult to find an actress who could match Chips' shy role without overshadowing his.
A film that'll hit your heart and will lie in your memory for ever.
Very Moving Old Movie.......2007-01-28
An emotional movie... some really sad parts and some really joyful parts. While as far as purity and innocence, it compares to Disney's Bambi, I'm really glad to have this movie in my personal library. Black and white.
He Made a Difference.......2006-11-18
He made a difference, didn't he that Mister Chips? A man makes himself what he has to be but he sometimes that realization comes long after the sun has set on one's life. Robert Donat is that man. He is a better man than he knows. What else could possibly be added to what has been said? I love this film. Enough said.

A wonderful/rueful running gag in El Dorado involves the Edgar Allan Poe line "Ride, boldly ride" being mangled by toupee-wearer Wayne into "Ride, baldy, ride." Two years later, in True Grit, Wayne put the joke in italics by donning an eyepatch and several inches of girth to play cantankerous territorial marshal Rooster Cogburn. Critics belatedly noticed that he could be a marvelously entertaining actor, and Hollywood finally gave him the Oscar they'd failed to nominate him for in Red River, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, et al. But make no mistake: True Grit is a splendid movie, with lovingly textured storytelling and sturdy characters, Henry Hathaway's finest high-country action set-pieces, intoxicatingly ornate frontier language, and a couple of formidable bad guys (Jeff Corey's Tom Cheney and Robert Duvall's "Lucky" Ned Pepper). It's a compliment to say that, from a technical standpoint, the movie could have been made any time in Hathaway's 40-year career, yet its feeling for the reality of violence ceded no ground to The Wild Bunch, released around the same time. Still, the film's most sublime passage falls between bursts of gunplay: Rooster sitting on a hilltop at night recounting his life story, as John Wayne metamorphoses ineluctably into W.C. Fields. --Richard T. Jameson

Collector of John Wayne DVD's.......2007-07-11
I am a collector of John Wayne DVD's - have most of his movies on VHS. This was a great addition to my collection.
True Grit (Special Collector's Edition).......2007-07-09
Well what can one say, but this was the one that got "THE DUKE" his Oscar, this is one movie that was certainly made for "THE DUKE", and a must see for all DUKE fans alike. Great viewing, great cast and one Movie that will be remembered forever.
What a ride ... .......2007-06-11
John Wayne's belated Oscar came for 1969's True Grit," a rousing entertainment that didn't stand quite as tall as, say, "Red River" or "The Searchers." Paramount Home Entertainment has released the double-disc set as part of the studio's 100th-year Wayne promotion with Warner Home Video.
The Duke plays one-eyed bounty hunter Rooster Cogburn. Valley girl Kim Darby plays a teen bent on avenging her father's death. Darby, who gives a sensational performance, stood toe-to-toe with Wayne onscreen and off, the bonus features note. Critics of the time thought Darby was in for a major league career, but she went on to a modest but long-running tenure in the business.
The extras aren't deep, but the docu "Working With the Duke" does a decent job of positioning "True Grit" in Wayne's sunsetting career. Perhaps mellowing with age, right-winger Wayne went to bat for the hiring of blacklisted screenwriter Marguerite Roberts, who was "weaned on stories about gunfighters."
The images of Colorado (2.35:1) are suitably sweeping and majestic. An extra feature returns to some of the "True Grit" locations, such as the graphic triple hanging. I experienced none of the softness cited by some of the other reviewers.
An old but still robust oak!.......2007-06-02
"True grit" is a humanizing Western that obviously doesn't lack of the main ingredients, but provided of a superior vision. Booster Cogburn is a one-eye crotchety U.S. Marshall who still can shoot straight.
In this sense we must acknowledge an absolute and even worthy treatment in which concerns originality and profound honesty about the genre that definitively has achieved a true mythic feature.
And so, being Wayne the most complete icon of this genre was more than obvious to suppose he had to star the most variegated gamut of characters in his successful artistic trajectory.
On the other hand, this was the film in which Dennis hopper and Henry Hathaway smoked the cask of the peace after a long chain of misfortunate events between them.
How to fix image quality.......2007-06-01
I had the same problem with image quality as previously posted by another reviewer on May 27, 2007. Mine was blurred, NOT in 2.35:1 and the "Enhanced" setting did not work on my DVD player. Here is what I had to do to fix the image quality problem: go back to startup DVD menu before you select "Play" and change your "Display" to "4:3 Letterbox".

When people say, "They don't make them like they used to," Pride of the Yankees is just the kind of film they're wistfully remembering. Nominated for 11 Academy awards (winning one for film editing), this handsome biographical drama of baseball legend Lou Gehrig is one of the most finely crafted films ever to emerge from Hollywood. Gary Cooper, that great oak of an American actor, progresses from the awkward and naively shy rookie to the seasoned "Iron Horse" first baseman of the New York Yankees without losing his idealism or modesty. Teresa Wright captures the same slice of Americana with her mixture of girl-next-door sweetness and urban sophistication as his supportive wife, Eleanor. After he's diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disease (known today simply as Lou Gehrig's disease), Cooper delivers Gehrig's famous retirement speech from the mound of Yankee Stadium with the courage and spirit of a winner: "I consider myself to be the luckiest man on the face of the earth." One of the finest sports films ever made, Pride is about more than simply baseball: Gehrig, the hard-working, uncommonly talented son of immigrant parents, is the living embodiment of the American Dream. Walter Brennan and Dan Duryea costar as a Greek chorus of sportswriters, and real-life Yankees Bill Dickey, Mark Koenig, Bob Meusel, and Babe Ruth appear as themselves. --Sean Axmaker

You'll be proud to introduce your kids to this film about virtue, courage, and an indomitable spirit. Like Treasure Island and Tom Sawyer, Pride should be required viewing for every family. Gary Cooper plays Lou Gehrig, the "Iron Horse" New York Yankee first baseman who became a record-setting legend in baseball. Sure, Cooper's a little long in the tooth to play a collegian, and he tries to capture Gehrig's innocence with a kind of eye-batting dopiness. But the last moments of the film, before Gehrig's final, famous farewell, transform the picture. Gehrig happens across a young man whom he had encountered years before in a children's hospital, and with this sequence, Pride becomes something more than a movie about innate talent and athleticism, or a lost era of America, it crystallizes into a film about (gulp!) human will. An absolute must. --Keith Simanton

This was a very good movie and it was nice of ruth (Babe Ruth) to be in it dispite they where not very good friends in the last few years of Lou's life and it was well played. I would recomand this to all real baseball fans. I personally ate the yankees but i think Lou was one of the greatest players to live and i injoided this movie.
Greatness that is seldom seen today but also an inspiring love story.......2007-07-23
Lou Gehrig was born to immigrant parents who worked hard, doing whatever they could, to teach their son love of family, self-respect, modesty, and stick-to-it-iveness. I first saw this movie near 40 years ago and it was only yesterday, upon seeing it again but in its entirety on a cable station, that I realized what attracted me to becoming a baseball and specifically a NY Yankees' fan: this movie. My childhood viewing of this movie laid seeds in me that would influence my childhood and adult behavior, including my likes and dislikes. Lou Gehrig was a simple man who did not complete college. He was not a ladies' man nor a womanizer. He was not caught up with the material things of this world, but focused on supporting his hard-working parents and later showering his wife with daily attention and affection. He did this in spite of his greatness as a professional ballplayer. He did this instead based on the values his parents instilled in him. These same values show themselves poignantly in Gary Cooper's portrayal (as well as that of his film parents and wife). The final test of his idealism and true greatness came with the diagnosis of the disease that would bear his name: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a motor neuromuscular disease. How ironic its timing in his young (years) and still productive (baseball) life! But, Lou Gehrig faced it in the same manner he did anything else in life: he gave his all - with courage and modesty, patience and hard work, selflessness and encouragement. He ended his career with a historic speech at Yankee stadium that again displayed his grandeur as a man. Lou Gehrig acknowledged others for blessing his life with richness. I was moved to tears when I watched this biographical film; one doesn't need to know about baseball to follow it. I not only saw my own life's failings, but also glimpsed a sense of hope for what can still be.
Baseball memories..........2007-06-11
"The Pride of the Yankees" was an excellent movie. It will be especially interesting and enjoyable for those who love baseball and history of the players, as well. Thank you for shipping it so promptly and it was received in excellent condition.
