Some movies can only be described as delicious. In Babette's Feast, a woman flees the French civil war and lands in a small seacoast village in Denmark, where she comes to work for two spinsters, devout daughters of a puritan minister. After many years, Babette unexpectedly wins a lottery, and decides to create a real French dinner--which leads the sisters to fear for their souls. Joining them for the meal will be a Danish general who, as a young soldier, courted one of the sisters, but she turned him away because of her religion. The village elders all resolve not to enjoy the meal, but can their moral fiber resist the sensual pleasure of Babette's cooking? Babette's Feast deservedly won the 1987 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This lovely movie is impeccably simple, yet its slender narrative contains a wealth of humor, melancholy, and hope. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Artistic, sensual and sacred passions unite in Babette's Feast. Written and directed by Gabriel Axel, from a short story by Out of Africa's Isak Dinesen, this Oscar(r)-winning*film offers "an irresistible mixture of dry wit and robust humanity" (Newsweek). Onthe desolate coast of Denmark live Martina and Philippa, the beautiful daughters of a devout clergyman who preaches salvation through self-denial. Both girls sacrifice youthful passion to faith and duty, and even many years after their father's death, they keep his austere teachings alive among thetownspeople. But with the arrival of Babette, a mysterious refugee from France's civil war, life for the sisters and their tiny hamlet begins to change. Soon, Babette has convinced them to try something truly outrageousa gourmet French meal! Her feast, of course, scandalizes the local elders. Just who is this strangely talented Babette, who has terrified this pious town with the prospect of losing their souls for enjoying too much earthly pleasure? *1987: Foreign Language Film

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing story/Amazing film.......2007-07-30

Though set in the past and in a forgotten place, the story itself is timeless and universal in conveying the deep human need to connect with others. To speak specifically to any aspect of the story is to betray it. See the film. If you have ever longed for an opportunity to give from heart and soul, see the film. If you have ever feared loss of someone precious, see the film. Your life and appreciation for the gifts of others will be enriched by this story.

4 out of 5 stars Babette's Feast.......2007-07-27

This well shot low budget film tells the story of 2 devout daughters of a zealously religous man who choose to remain with their father in lieu of marriage and a wonderful singing career. Following his death the girls remain in the small isolated village on the coast of Denmark living austere unremarkable lives until Babette comes to stay, a refuge from the French civil war. Babette works as a servant to the 2 sisters until she receives unexpected wealth. She elects to share her wealth with the elders of the village by providing them with a sumptuous gourmet french meal, with some unexpected results. Initially a bit slow to get moving.

5 out of 5 stars savor it..........2007-06-22

for anyone desiring to see what the difference between a Hollywood film and a foreign film is, this is the one to watch. Babette's Feast is a scrumptious delight. A simple story about a mysterious French woman who comes to the coast of Denmark and works for 14 years as a cook to two pious Danish sisters. The story slowly unravels like a great masterpiece and when the French cook wins a lottery all the pieces come together to reveal a gorgeous mosaic of humanity. Full of simplicity, humor, and insight to the human condition. Simple, funny, gorgeous and delightfully delicious.

5 out of 5 stars full and overflowing.......2007-06-14

The same gentle irony that Karen Blixen brought to the interplay of faith and human experience in OUT OF AFRICA is to be observed in full flower in this delightfully quirky film adaptation of her short story called BABETTE'S FEAST. Blixen found the French fathers in Kenya a bit rigid and self-interested, yet she expressed this with kindness and patience. She does the same here with her Lutheran Danes.

The romantic exuberance of the French servant-woman Babette as she brings to the island village that is her refuge the sensuality of a lavish feast does not reduce the disciplined and selfless orthodoxy of the Lutheran sect to ridicule. Rather, there is room for a certain conversion in *both* directions, a cross-pollenation that Blixen and her cinematic interpreters allow themselves to relish.

Blixen left us a great story. It has been made into a memorable film that belongs on the 'keeper' shelf of viewers who love a story.

BABETTE'S FEAST is a full plate for the heart.

5 out of 5 stars A Feast for Your Eyes, and Your Heart........2007-06-14

This movie is a masterpiece. Babette's Feast shows the story of love for: God, food, family, friends, and growth. It's literally a feast for your eyes, and your heart. Bravo!

I first watched this movie with the subtitles. I loved it so much, I had to watch it again in dubbed English.

The seventh and final series of the beloved All Creatures Great and Small, based on the autobiographical tales of Yorkshire veterinarian James Herriot, ended with the warmhearted humor and sentiment that marked the show's entire run. As ever, James (Christopher Timothy) wrestles with the illnesses and injuries of cows, horses, pigs, dogs, and occasionally more exotic animals, as well as the quirks and moods of the eccentric farmers and the bickering of his fellow vets, the brothers Siegfried (Robert Hardy, best known as Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter movies) and Tristan Farnon (Peter Davison, Doctor Who, Campion, returning to the show after an absence). Series 7 moves into the 1950s, even featuring the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Though the episodes feature all three vets, much of the fun comes from the escapades of Tristan, who's as prone to frivolous obsessions and harmless scrapes as ever. Romantic tangles are his specialty: The series starts with James playing a prank on Tristan, leading him to believe he'd drunkenly proposed to someone two years earlier; later, he becomes smitten with the pretty owner of a pet tortoise. But the show's heart lies with James himself, whose warm relationship with his wife Helen (Lynda Bellingham, Second Thoughts) mirrors his passion for the animals in his care--be it an enormous sow or a neglected dog. And of course, Mrs. Pumphrey and her pekingese Tricki Woo put in an appearance. The Complete Series 7 Collection includes 12 episodes, plus the 1990 Christmas special and--a must for fans--an interview program from 2004 that reunites Timothy, Hardy, Bellingham, and the original Helen, Carol Drinkwater. Though it's the show's last series, newcomers will find it easily accessible and will swiftly grow fond of the well-developed and engaging characters. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Based on the bestselling books by James Herriot, this long-running series is a perennial PBS hit. All Creatures Great and Small Series Seven wraps up the final installment of this heart-warming tale from the Yorkshire dales with James Herriot (Christopher Timothy), his wife Helen (Lynda Bellingham) and his volatile but warm-hearted partner, Siegfried Farnon (Robert Hardy). Life at the small veterinary practice continues to challenge the partners, whether by neglected animals or tight-fisted farmers. But through all the trails and tribulations, the social upheavals and the years gone by, friendship and family prove themselves as strong as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Tristan Returns.......2007-08-27

Season seven is a great completion to the series, bringing back Tristan in most of the episodes, and of course James and Siegfried lead the cast. Lynda Bellingham continues the role of Helen, which is my least favorite actor on the show (I enjoyed the prior Helen - Drinkwater - much more). Also some of the old characters are brought back, such as, Granville Bennett, Mr. Biggens, Mrs. Pumphrey and Hodgekin, etc.

The story lines are reminiscent of the later book, with young Rosie wanting to be a Vet, James' bad purchase of netting, as well as, his attempt to build a small greenhouse. Then of course that is topped off, with Helen's bad choice of a carpet from a door to door salesman. Also, we have the young farmer with sensitive nostrils, wearing a red bandana to buy his fish and chips and gets arrested, with James bailing him out. Then we have the famous Wolfie dog that chases off the two young thieves that rob several old age pensioners, as well as many other fine examples.

There is the obvious repeat of some of the old story lines, but they are enjoyable - What is nice, is that the old incident is referenced and smoothly added to the episode. The show does take some liberties and there are several incidents that are not true to the books, but the episodes are most enjoyable.

Too bad there are only seven seasons.... Episode twelve provides a meaningful ending to the series, with our three main characters together, leaving the viewer, to find their next adventure.

The 1990 Christmas special (Brotherly Love) is very good, but more like two additional episodes - There is not much related to a Christmas season. One distracting point of the special is the music - When there is an ironic or funny incident, the music is like - Waa -Waa -Waa; which just does not seem to fit. (There is a little bit of that music in a few episodes too).

The 2003 cast reunion is enjoyable, but much of the interview material is known through past DVD commentaries, etc, and there is not much new information. The attendees have aged well - Tristan (Peter Davison) is not in the reunion, due to other commitments. The best part is the off set Vet who provided guidance to the cast through the years is interviewed as well.

Overall, a definite purchase and is far better than the 4 - 6 series, and brings back the feel of the original seasons 1 - 3.

Todd Haynes, ever unpredictable, follows up his experimental trilogy Poison and his restrained Safe with this flamboyant study in glam rock through the kaleidoscopic lens of Citizen Kane. Christian Bale plays Arthur Stuart, a reporter sent to investigate the legend of rock legend and bisexual pop icon Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as a not-so-thinly veiled David Bowie), who disappeared a decade ago after staging his own mock assassination. But Arthur is flooded with memories of his own adolescence as he interviews Slade's friends and business associates, peeling back the layer of makeup and spangles that was the model of rebellion for a generation of middle-class British kids and discovering a hollow center. Ewan McGregor almost steals the film as the punk pioneer Curt Wild (equal parts Iggy Pop and Kurt Cobain), the genuine article to Slade's calculated, coifed image of glitter stardom. Haynes's film lacks nothing in capturing the flamboyance and spectacle of the era with flashy filmmaking and kitschy costumes, and if the plot seems lost in the preening and visual fireworks, perhaps that's the point: behind the façades and manufactured fronts is nothing but glitter, energy, and a beat. --Sean Axmaker

A random massively grand movie. And Ewan McGregor is so amazingly AWESOME!!! Watch the movie just for him. :D

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked film with big names, good performances........2007-08-24

This movie slid under the radar of most fans of music genre films such as myself. This follows an investigative reporter (played by christian bale) through his own personal journey through glam rock, along with his search for glam rocks biggest name "Brian Slade" (played by jonathan ryhs meyers) who dissapeared after his on stage shooting. Along the way, brian's life gets mixed up with Kurt Wild (Ewan McGregor). This film has plenty of parrallels of david bowie and ziggy stardust, to Iggy and the Stooge/The Doors. With soundtracks furnished by the big glam rock acts like T. Rex, Gary Glitter and others, this film is one that should be viewed by music fans for nastalgia's sake. Check this film out.

2 out of 5 stars Only liked the visual aspect.......2007-07-14

I don't know why so many are blown away by this film. I am a huge Jonathan Rhys Meyers fan, but even he can't save the HORRIBLE wanna be glitter rock songs they polluted this thing with. The lyrics are ludicrous in some places. I was actually laughing at them in some scenes. And I don't know where they got the stupid idea that all those artists were flaming fairies?? David Bowie, who's been happily married twice, said that he lied about sleeping with guys. It was just a ploy to shock people & sell his androgenous image. The only person I can think of that was gay was Elton John & he sure didn't write any gay songs back then.

I was around during those days & they may have got the costumes right, but the artists sure had more class than these fictional bozos & a LOT more talent.
Also, these characters are so shallow & one-dimensional that I could care less whether they lived or died. No, I wasn't that thrilled seeing Ewan's "thing" flopping around on stage either.

Mr. Haynes, the next time you do a musical, hire a PRO to write the lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars The power of music and presence.......2007-05-29

I really liked this movie for the reason being that what the power of music and a musician can bring. If the musician is dressing a certain way, so is the public. If it is "ok" for the musician to be gay or bi, it is for the public too. What ever is in "style" the public relates. I know that some of you are probably thinking that this is a dream world that I am writing about, but look at society today. Let's take the red ribbon that the gay community started for AIDS awareness. What other ribbons came from it? ie, yellow, pink and others. What was once taboo is now mainstream. I also want to add that the main characters of this movie should be commended for their acting skills and "believability" in any character that they play. They both have tremendous acting skills and beautiful bodies. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes the "glam rock" era.

4 out of 5 stars Glitter and Glam.......2007-05-26

"Velvet Goldmine"

Glitter and Glam

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Velvet Goldmine" is impressive in the way it includes Oscar Wilde, his philosophies about art and his fascination with music. Even though Wilde is not a character in the film his presence is felt throughout. He is referenced throughout.
Curt is both a composite of Iggy Pop and Wilde--he is an artist as he creates music and Brian Slade is Dorian Gray. He throws his entire persona out there and into his music and traps himself into his own being. Because he has trapped himself, he leaves no room for growth. When he is pseudo-shot, he is arranging his own future. His sham death liberates him and secures him a place in history. He was controversial and bared all in his work and this is what deprived him of longevity. His popularity undoubtedly would have paled and he eventually would be forgotten. If he had changed, everything about him would have changed and he would be regarded as having sold out. By inaugurating his death, he guarantees himself an eternity.
This is not just a film--it is an experience. "Velvet Goldmine" has a sense of erotic innocence and therefore becomes a triumphant motion picture. It explores the effect of glam and the way it influenced the world view toward homosexuality.
There were two instances of a vivid evocation of gay life. The first is when the narrator is watching Slade on TV and he announces that he is a homosexual. The narrator fantasizes about pointing to the TV in front of his parents and saying "That's me". The second comes when the narrator buys his first Brian Slade album and a magazine with an article about Slade. He uses them as material to masturbate over.
The glam rockers changed the world when they brought to the world images that had been unthinkable images at that time. By doing so they eased life for gay men--they created a language that made it easier to explain ourselves to others. Their music can hardly be separated from the gay aspects of it.
The movie is stunning to watch and the imagery stays long after the movie is over. Sure, it is a surreal view of glam rock but so what? It is entertainment. It may be over the top and campy and excessive but it works beautifully.

It seemed like a good idea in 1973: a musical scored by Donovan about the life and times of St. Francis of Assisi, the passionate ascetic who expressed love for God by loving nature. But the finished product was something else. Filmmaker Franco Zeffirelli (Endless Love) makes a decorous effort at communicating the ideals of Francis and even tweaking the character toward flower-power relevance. But the result is feel-good fluff, a boring movie that doesn't penetrate its subject as much as reinvent him toward a modern bias. Graham Faulkner is entirely forgettable in the lead, and Donovan's songs on this project aren't exactly first-rate, either. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful film, a moving look at the early life of St Francis.......2007-07-22

10 Stars.

This movie is inspirational, beautiful, and moving. It brought St. Francis to life for me. I often think of this movie, months after watching it. A wonderful glimpse into the life of a Saint, with lessons we all may benefit from. One of my favorite films of all time!

(When I was a child my mother took me to see this and I did not like it - how things change!)

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Sublime.......2007-06-27

If you have ever been believed that butterflies glide and swoop with thoughts of pure delight, or that the souls of men may indeed soar like birds delighting in the freedom air and sun, then this is a film for you. A rarity among the movie making gendre, for there is no spin, no contradictory message to fog the moral compass of the soul. This is just the true story of an exceptional man, a rebel against the values that enslave the thoughts, which are but chains of misery, of present day as with 13th century Italy, masterfully told by one of the greatest director of all time. A film to be cherished on high as with the rare likes of "A Man for All Seasons." And one that I can never tire of as a result of its profundity.

5 out of 5 stars Just as avertised.......2007-06-08

Was delivered quickly, well packaged and in condition as described. Absolutely no complaints

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Wisdom.......2007-05-13

This is by far one of my favourite movies of all time and is a must watch for just about everyone on the planet. It is a great rendision of St. Francis. If you watch this movie and don't like it, then you need to watch it again and open your heart and eyes to love because you missed the point the first time. Whether or not this is the best picture about St. Francis does not matter. It's the movie it'self that draws on an open heart concept. Don't miss this film. I highly recommend buying this one for anyones collection.

5 out of 5 stars Brother Sun, Sister Moon: Maybe their is Hope!.......2007-05-12

I am not a religious person nor do I beleive in life after death. That being said, seeing Brother Sun Sister Moon gives me hope in the human being in that the message behind of it all is: what ever people may say on you or however you are judge, just fallow the path you think is yours.
It might be an odd review, but the rest you must see; its a Masterwork.
The scenes are breathtaking and the actors are beautiful. The music and songs will take you elswhere, and that is precious. If possible: THREE thumbs up!

In need of some good old-fashioned gore? You'll find it by the bucketload in the low-budget monsterfest Feast, which arrives on DVD in an even bloodier unrated edition. The winning entry in the third season of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's reality series/talent contest Project Greenlight (Wes Craven is also on board as an advisor/producer), Feast is a wall-to-wall splatterthon that operates on an agreeably simple premise: A crew of motley characters is trapped in a remote location (in this case, a desert bar) by ravenous, flesh-eating monsters (here, a quartet of toothy and astoundingly fecund humanoids). The result? Lots of gruesome deaths and plenty of manic action, delivered with kinetic style by first-time feature director John Gulager. Not everything about Feast works--Gulager's drive is thwarted by the unfocused script, which favors smarmy dialogue over substance--but the effects are impressive, given the film's price tag, and the cast is incredibly game for the gory goings-on, with Krista Allen (Entourage), Judah Friedlander (30 Rock), Balthazar Getty (Alias), and Gulager's father, veteran actor Clu Gulager, among the stand-outs. The DVD includes a smattering of outtakes and deleted scenes (including an alternate ending); commentary by Gulager, the screenwriters, and two of the film's numerous producers; and a making-of featurette, which Project Greenlight viewers should find interesting solely for producers Chris Moore and Michael Leahy's attitudes towards Gulager (both were a hair's breath away from firing him throughout the production, but here, amusingly suggest unconditional support). -- Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars A great campy horror flick.......2007-08-08

I bought this one on a whim, but it's actually pretty entertaining. The budget was slim, but they did a good job with what they had.

4 out of 5 stars This movie is great.......2007-08-06

Seriously.. this movie is a masterpiece of black humour, splatter and genre twisting. I love the way the writer and director have taken cliche characters and completely messed with the formula (all tied together with FUNNY intro messages for each one).

This movie is gross but great entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Finally !, a recently made B-movie worth buying........2007-07-25

Finally !, a recently made B-movie worth buying. This gory little horror gem succeeds in doing what the majority of other recent efforts have not, It actually lives up to the quotes on the DVD case it comes in! If you are considering buying a horror film to watch over the next few days, buy this and give the Hills Have Eyes part 2 a miss.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Premise, Perfectly Executed..........2007-07-24

I don't know how many DVD boxes I've read that said the movie inside was "A non-stop thrill-ride!" or "Action-packed from start to finish!", etc., yadda-yadda-yadda. Most of the time, this is only partially true at best. FEAST is a different story! The action starts almost immediately, and continues w/ only short breaks to catch a quick breath, before plunging on into another attack / slaughter! This is one tremendous monster movie! The creatures are hideous, mysterious, and absolutely lethal. A small band of humans, trapped in a desert saloon, must fend off these critters all night long. People die right and left, especially the ones I expected to survive! FEAST is bloody, fast, and intense. It's also got a nice, gruesome sense of humor! Watch it as part of a triple feature w/ SLITHER and THE DESCENT for added monsters, blood, and slime...

5 out of 5 stars Best B movie in years.......2007-07-23

And don't get me wrong - I consider "Alien" a B movie and one of the best movies ever. To me "B Movie" describes a genre rather than a level of quality. "Feast" was just fun fun fun in ways that Hollywood hasn't managed in quite a while. It has a cleverness on par with that shown by "Scream," in that it plays to, and with, the conventions we know and expectations we bring. I mean, everyone knows how a horror movie or creature feature is supposed to play out, and this movie plays with both keeping to that tradition and dropping it like the cold wet rag it can be to surprise us and entertain us. I was expecting something like a straight-to-DVD video that would tell basically the same story in basically the same way as any other monster movie, probably with cheesy effects and maybe bad acting. I was very happily surprised at how much better than that Feast turned out to be. The characters are well-done and the actors turn in good performances (a special nod to Henry Rollins on that count), and the production style is really very entertaining, a good sense of humor underlying everything. It is graphically (and sometimes sexually) violent, but if you object to that you're probably not considering this movie anyway. And despite being on a limited budget, the monsters are done well, nicely grotesque, frightening and convincing. This is as much due to the director's cinematography as the effects folks' creations, both of which work to advantage in bringing these creatures to life. I recommend this movie the way I recommend American Werewolf in London and Carpenter's The Thing. I believe this movie was the result of the "Project Greenlight" program, so horror fans looking for a little deviation from the standard predictable Hollywood approach to these kinds of movies should definitely support this film, send the message that we'll be an audience for more than they think.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate Production.......2007-05-20

I was just introduced to this series and am amazed and delighted at the experience. British productions just really know how to do it right. The acting is superb, the visuals are outstanding, the story a wonderful mixture of brash old english humor, gruff country attitude and delightful excentricities. I can't say enough good about it. A highly recommended series. I want to see them all now.

5 out of 5 stars The best...bar none...TV show in the world.......2007-03-21

It is a fact almost universally acknowledged that the movie or TV adaptation of a book is always dissapointing. Possibly, people just don't like to have their conceptions of a book or series shaken by someone else's interpretation of it. Not to be scoffed at as well is Hollywood's ineptitude (see the Hollywood production of Pride and Prejudice, 2005.) Regardless of what causes it, it seems to run rampant in most film adaptations of books. All Creatures Great and Small, however, breaks all the rules. The BBC takes Herriot's masterpiece and perfects it, to create what I believe to be the best television series in the world. The only, and I mean ONLY, problem I have ever had with All Creatures Great and Small is the fact that the slightly quirky cases the dvd's come in break easily. A pull-out/fold-out setup would definitely have been better. Anyway, I highly reccommend the TV show and the books because they are the exceptions to the rule.

I love this series! I was introduced to it about 2 years ago and love it. Does anyone know what the name of the song is on the dvd menu? I've seen and heard the theme song on the Internet, but never this one on the dvd menu.

Have almost finished watching the whole collection and it is almost addictive. It's relaxing to spend time with some beautiful people especially if you are an animal lover. It is money well spent. Those Brits are the best.

Description

As The Virgin Queen begins, a young Elizabeth is imprisoned in the Tower of London by Queen Mary, charged with conspiracy and treason. Both women are daughters of the ruthless and oft-married Henry VIII, who plunged England into turmoil by breaking with the Roman Catholic Church. Mary wants to reunite with Rome, while Elizabeth is determined to stand by her Protestant faith--a potentially fatal choice. But Elizabeth's life takes an unexpected turn when Mary dies, leaving no heir to the throne. As the new queen, Elizabeth discovers the harsh realities of ruling a religiously divided nation and must learn to outwit her enemies and charm those who conspire to their own ends.

Soon under pressure to secure a politically advantageous marriage, the coquettish Elizabeth rejects a string of eligible royal bachelors from abroad, openly preferring the burning affections of her childhood playmate, the athletic, handsome--and married--Robert Dudley. But is she toying with him as she is with her other suitors?

Starring Anne-Marie Duff (The Aristocrats, The Magdalene Sisters) as the shrewd and captivating queen who defended her throne amidst an atmosphere of plotting and intrigue, torture and murder, The Virgin Queen is a riveting drama that explores the fascinating 44-year reign of Elizabeth I.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic work of art reaching the highest levels of excellence.......2007-09-02

at first i thought this was some mushy love story but the resemblence of mrs duff to the queen intreaged me. the awsum detail in costume, loacation and acting tells the story well of one of my favorite queens this woman lived with treachery, deciet, and plots of assasination around every corner and though she looked like a frail little girl she could be as vicious as a tiger and from time to time she was . this is as much of a work of art as the mona lisa in my book .watching this makes you feel like your there and the musical score was haunting but worked very well wish they'ed put it on cd

5 out of 5 stars The most true movie I have seen.......2007-05-15

I have watched several movies and read several books on Queen Elizabeth and this is by far the most accurate movie available. Although I love all movies about Queen Elizabeth I have found this one to be the most historicaly correct.

5 out of 5 stars Elizabeth Queen of England.......2007-05-13

I enjoyed the story very much. Besides being a fasinating story, I felt that it also was historically accurate. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful to watch and watch again..........2007-04-10

Five stars. And five stars to the reviewer "Buck Bauer" whose review pointed me to Amazon.co.uk as a source for the soundtrack. It seems that folks either love or hate the music. I ADORE it and am thrilled to have finally obtained a copy. I was really struggling with the lyrics of what I believe is the first song in the movie. On watching the Helen Mirren version of Elizabeth I on HBO I connected the lyrics to the poem by Elizabeth I "On Monsieur's Departure"

It's hardly worth comparing the various portrayals of Elizabeth I. All versions are interesting and stand on their own. And I agree with another viewer who feels that Tilda Swinton (outstanding in "Orlando" - another film with a haunting soundtrack) would perhaps make the best Elizabeth I yet.

5 out of 5 stars Trust me.......2007-04-09

I wrote up a rather length and detailed review of this excellent series and then the computer crashed. Divine intervention!?

Suffice it to say that this is a marvelous drama for both new and old fans of the English history genre. Anne Marie Duff and a stellar supporting cast (Tom Hardy and the magnetic Derek Riddell deserve special recognition) make it even more compelling than the celebrity-driven versions more well known. Forgive some erratic direction, phony looking glue-on facial hair, Essex's hyped up Oedipal complex and frequently too on-the-nose dialogue and just enjoy the performances, production values and even soundtrack. While it curious that this UK-filmed miniseries seems strangely devoid of any rain maybe Gloriana was so named for the weather!), it is a first rate work well worth the 4 hours' viewing.

5 out of 5 stars All Creatures Great & Small - The Specials.......2007-08-31

I was absolutely charming. I watched the whole DVD without interruption. I wanted to in the moment the whole time. I rate this the hightest possible.

5 out of 5 stars Time machine.......2007-08-12

If you are fed up with this cold, uncaring and hectic world and don't use mind altering substances to escape reality, this is the best medicine. You either remember this show and loved it so much that you want to take advantage of the DVD phenomena or you don't! I love them all. They are back from the war. The dales have remained relatively unphased except for the unmentioned young men who might have gone and come back changed by the experience (or maybe not come back), but the series does not get into that much. The animals and their owners are busy just living. They are simple folk, they drink, they laugh, and the warmth and humor is what I need. Just knowing that Carol Drinkwater was in her swan song as Helen was a bit unsettling, but the addition of the kids is nice. If you have and love the first three series, you know you have to have this so just go for it. What else is there, the slop that is on modern TV?

5 out of 5 stars All Creatures Great & Small - The Specials.......2007-05-12

Love the series. The specials just add to the rest of them.

5 out of 5 stars All Creatures Great & Small.......2007-01-10

I have read all of James Harriet's books and the actors truly personify the characters in the books. It was wonderful to see print come to life on the television. It was also nice to see the creativity of the author displayed as they did not deviate much from the original written form. It was really great.
