Some movies can only be described as delicious. In Babette's Feast, a woman flees the French civil war and lands in a small seacoast village in Denmark, where she comes to work for two spinsters, devout daughters of a puritan minister. After many years, Babette unexpectedly wins a lottery, and decides to create a real French dinner--which leads the sisters to fear for their souls. Joining them for the meal will be a Danish general who, as a young soldier, courted one of the sisters, but she turned him away because of her religion. The village elders all resolve not to enjoy the meal, but can their moral fiber resist the sensual pleasure of Babette's cooking? Babette's Feast deservedly won the 1987 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This lovely movie is impeccably simple, yet its slender narrative contains a wealth of humor, melancholy, and hope. --Bret FetzerDescription
Artistic, sensual and sacred passions unite in Babette's Feast. Written and directed by Gabriel Axel, from a short story by Out of Africa's Isak Dinesen, this Oscar(r)-winning*film offers "an irresistible mixture of dry wit and robust humanity" (Newsweek). Onthe desolate coast of Denmark live Martina and Philippa, the beautiful daughters of a devout clergyman who preaches salvation through self-denial. Both girls sacrifice youthful passion to faith and duty, and even many years after their father's death, they keep his austere teachings alive among thetownspeople. But with the arrival of Babette, a mysterious refugee from France's civil war, life for the sisters and their tiny hamlet begins to change. Soon, Babette has convinced them to try something truly outrageousa gourmet French meal! Her feast, of course, scandalizes the local elders. Just who is this strangely talented Babette, who has terrified this pious town with the prospect of losing their souls for enjoying too much earthly pleasure? *1987: Foreign Language FilmCustomer Reviews:

The seventh and final series of the beloved All Creatures Great and Small, based on the autobiographical tales of Yorkshire veterinarian James Herriot, ended with the warmhearted humor and sentiment that marked the show's entire run. As ever, James (Christopher Timothy) wrestles with the illnesses and injuries of cows, horses, pigs, dogs, and occasionally more exotic animals, as well as the quirks and moods of the eccentric farmers and the bickering of his fellow vets, the brothers Siegfried (Robert Hardy, best known as Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter movies) and Tristan Farnon (Peter Davison, Doctor Who, Campion, returning to the show after an absence). Series 7 moves into the 1950s, even featuring the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Though the episodes feature all three vets, much of the fun comes from the escapades of Tristan, who's as prone to frivolous obsessions and harmless scrapes as ever. Romantic tangles are his specialty: The series starts with James playing a prank on Tristan, leading him to believe he'd drunkenly proposed to someone two years earlier; later, he becomes smitten with the pretty owner of a pet tortoise. But the show's heart lies with James himself, whose warm relationship with his wife Helen (Lynda Bellingham, Second Thoughts) mirrors his passion for the animals in his care--be it an enormous sow or a neglected dog. And of course, Mrs. Pumphrey and her pekingese Tricki Woo put in an appearance. The Complete Series 7 Collection includes 12 episodes, plus the 1990 Christmas special and--a must for fans--an interview program from 2004 that reunites Timothy, Hardy, Bellingham, and the original Helen, Carol Drinkwater. Though it's the show's last series, newcomers will find it easily accessible and will swiftly grow fond of the well-developed and engaging characters. --Bret FetzerDescription
Based on the bestselling books by James Herriot, this long-running series is a perennial PBS hit. All Creatures Great and Small Series Seven wraps up the final installment of this heart-warming tale from the Yorkshire dales with James Herriot (Christopher Timothy), his wife Helen (Lynda Bellingham) and his volatile but warm-hearted partner, Siegfried Farnon (Robert Hardy). But through all the trails and tribulations, the social upheavals and the years gone by, friendship and family prove themselves as strong as ever.Customer Reviews:

Todd Haynes, ever unpredictable, follows up his experimental trilogy Poison and his restrained Safe with this flamboyant study in glam rock through the kaleidoscopic lens of Citizen Kane. Christian Bale plays Arthur Stuart, a reporter sent to investigate the legend of rock legend and bisexual pop icon Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as a not-so-thinly veiled David Bowie), who disappeared a decade ago after staging his own mock assassination. But Arthur is flooded with memories of his own adolescence as he interviews Slade's friends and business associates, peeling back the layer of makeup and spangles that was the model of rebellion for a generation of middle-class British kids and discovering a hollow center. Ewan McGregor almost steals the film as the punk pioneer Curt Wild (equal parts Iggy Pop and Kurt Cobain), the genuine article to Slade's calculated, coifed image of glitter stardom. Haynes's film lacks nothing in capturing the flamboyance and spectacle of the era with flashy filmmaking and kitschy costumes, and if the plot seems lost in the preening and visual fireworks, perhaps that's the point: behind the façades and manufactured fronts is nothing but glitter, energy, and a beat. --Sean AxmakerDescription

It seemed like a good idea in 1973: a musical scored by Donovan about the life and times of St. Francis of Assisi, the passionate ascetic who expressed love for God by loving nature. But the finished product was something else. Filmmaker Franco Zeffirelli (Endless Love) makes a decorous effort at communicating the ideals of Francis and even tweaking the character toward flower-power relevance. But the result is feel-good fluff, a boring movie that doesn't penetrate its subject as much as reinvent him toward a modern bias. Graham Faulkner is entirely forgettable in the lead, and Donovan's songs on this project aren't exactly first-rate, either. --Tom KeoghCustomer Reviews:

In need of some good old-fashioned gore? You'll find it by the bucketload in the low-budget monsterfest Feast, which arrives on DVD in an even bloodier unrated edition. The winning entry in the third season of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's reality series/talent contest Project Greenlight (Wes Craven is also on board as an advisor/producer), Feast is a wall-to-wall splatterthon that operates on an agreeably simple premise: A crew of motley characters is trapped in a remote location (in this case, a desert bar) by ravenous, flesh-eating monsters (here, a quartet of toothy and astoundingly fecund humanoids). The result? Lots of gruesome deaths and plenty of manic action, delivered with kinetic style by first-time feature director John Gulager. Not everything about Feast works--Gulager's drive is thwarted by the unfocused script, which favors smarmy dialogue over substance--but the effects are impressive, given the film's price tag, and the cast is incredibly game for the gory goings-on, with Krista Allen (Entourage), Judah Friedlander (30 Rock), Balthazar Getty (Alias), and Gulager's father, veteran actor Clu Gulager, among the stand-outs. The DVD includes a smattering of outtakes and deleted scenes (including an alternate ending); commentary by Gulager, the screenwriters, and two of the film's numerous producers; and a making-of featurette, which Project Greenlight viewers should find interesting solely for producers Chris Moore and Michael Leahy's attitudes towards Gulager (both were a hair's breath away from firing him throughout the production, but here, amusingly suggest unconditional support). -- Paul GaitaDescription
