4 out of 5 stars Euro-horror.......2004-03-05

I desperately wanted to try one of these euro-horror films that are so highly regarded by many, so I decided to splurge and buy this set rather than just one or two of them(which cost a lot more individually than in this 3-pack). Trying to find reviews for these films were very difficult so I thought I'd try to help those out that are curious about these films too. All films are english subtitled, supposedly uncut, and in their original theatrical aspect ratios. So here we go:

Living Dead Girl--i've read this is considered Jean Rollin's best film. I can't vouch for that, but it is pretty good. Some girl comes back to life after a chemical accident and needs blood to stay 'alive' which her best friend provides for her. It has decent performances and decent pacing(it was kinda slow, but i didn't get really bored at any point), but it wasn't very scary or erotic(no major sex/love scene, the lesbian relationship is only hinted at). It is rather bloody but not really too gory. (trailer, filmography, mini-gallery)

Reincarnation of Isabel--Poorly made film about some girl being killed because she was accused of being a witch. She comes back later to seek vengeance on those that killed her(i think, it's slightly confusing). Anyway, there is a decent sleaze factor in this one, but again, no major sex scene(more like a few major 'tease' scenes). Also has very little atmosphere, no real scares or blood, gore, etc. In fact, if it weren't for the sleaze factor, this would be kinda hard to sit through(would make for a good MST3K episode though). (no extras worth mentioning)

Night of the Hunted--atmospherically surreal Jean Rollin film. Plot has something to do with some 'patients' in a high rise losing their memory due to some 'illness' and two of the girls trying to escape. I've read reviews complaining it's too confusing and extremely cheap looking. The sets are sparse, but it adds to the surreal nature of the proceedings(besides, who's to say these rooms don't naturally look this way). As for the confusion, it's not really confusing at all mainly because one character in the film explans almost everything at the end of the movie(if it's still confusing...it's because of the holes in the script). The film is not really scary, bloody(ok,one scene), or gory; disturbing, intriguing, and weird are more appropriate. As for the sex, there's an extended love scene, a rape scene, and a brief sex-turns-deadly scene. The extras say there is a trailer(there is), and two "strong, previously unseen sex scenes". These two must've been incorporated into the film, cause i saw no option to view them separately on the menu screen.

Overall, Living Dead Girl is arguably the best made of the 3 and can be considered a horror movie. Reincarnation of Isabel is arguably the poorest made but yet has the highest sleaze factor and falls under the witchcraft genre. But my personal favorite would have to be the sci-fi-ish, surreal nightmare Night of the Hunted(though none of these 3 could actually be considered zombie films, at least, in the Romero-sense anyway). As a package, it costs a lot less to buy than buying them individually. However, I really can't strongly recommend a purchase of any one of these titles. But if you are a fan of these types of films, it's still worth a late night rental for some cheap thrills. To be honest, I'm glad i saw them, but i'm not exactly glad i paid for all three of them(perhaps more extras would have helped...that or better films!). Btw, I'm not completely ignorant of this genre as i've seen Vampyres(check that one out), Daughters of Darkness, The Beast, Immoral Tales, and a few too many Jess Franco films by way of comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Anchorbay has done it again!!!!!.......2003-04-05

Being a fan of Lucio Fulci and needing a copy of City of Living Dead, I decided to buy the 2 disc set even though I hadn't seen Duckling before, I am lucky I made that decesion.

First of all City is basicly the same plot as Beyond and even stars Catriona MacColl from Beyond. A priest hangs himself opening the gateway to hell and MacColl sees this in a phsycic vision and is scared into a coma. A report saves her from the grave as she is buried alive and they set out to close the gateway. While there are zombies in this film they are noit traditional ones, they have supernatural powers and rip the back of their victims skulls off. The priest zombie makes victims bleed from their eyes and vomit up their guts, this happens in a really great scene. There is also a brilliant head drilling scene, which is in my opinion one of Fulci's best effects. While not as good as Beyond, City is still a great Fulci film, with plenty of atmosphere and Catriona MacColl looking very cute, I haven't seen her in anything but Fulci films, it's a shame though as she is such a cute actress.

Duckling, which I though would be the weak movie, was surprisingly a brilliant. While I have heard of it refered to as a giallo, it really is more of a great mystery involving a series of child murders. While there are a few stalking scenes, Duckling lacks the gloved killer vibe of the standard giallo. What stands out in this film is the lack of Fulci gore, except one scene involving a witch being beaten by vigilantes and also Fulci proves with this film that he is capable of directing a coherrant plot driven film and makes a truely gripping film experience.

While slim on special features compared to the Beyond DVD, Anchorbay has as usual done an exceptional job of transfering these films to DVD. The pictures are generally as crisp as the day they were shot and really any Fulci fan should snap these up as there will never be better versions available.

Hi! As always, my review is based on QUALITY of the DVD's and not on the movie, acting, or direction.

DUCKLING: Picture-3.5, Sound-3.5
CITY OF DEAD: Picture-2.0, Sound-3.0

Thus, my overall rating is 3 stars. If I was rating "Duckling" alone, I would round it up to 4 stars by itself.

This is an excellent two-pack to buy if you enjoy Lucio Fulci. The price of the two-pack is about the same as if you buy one separately, so get 'em both at once. The case has kind of a hard-to-get-to insert card because the 2nd DVD flops around on a stiff plastic round. The insert card has Chapter Lists, one movie on each side -- that's it.

I watched "City of the Living Dead" first and I'm glad. There's not much to enjoy. The picture is lousy and grainy -- this, from a 1980 film. It is not true 16x9; in fact, it is more like a box on the screen. Sound is empty with no depth. Dolby 5.1? I don't know; it's barely stereo. The best part of the movie is seeing Catriona MacColl.

"Don't Torture a Duckling" is a superb film. There is a bit of gore, but this movie would earn plenty if released today in theatres. The sound is listed as mono (true) and is sharp and clear, becoming a bit distorted during loud parts. It is a true 16x9 picture and superior to "City of the Living Dead".

Whew. Both films feature good-looking female actors, as you'd expect in any Argento, Bava, or Fulci film. The prize here is Florinda Bolkan -- who gets top billing. Now I know why. She is very, very beautiful although in somewhat of a dirty and disheveled role. She is taller and larger than some of the policemen -- I like that -- and her performance is dramatic and superb. She did not receive an easy part to perform. It's always good to find a new female hero although the film is from 1972. She continues to work in film. I'm glad I found her, and I will be looking for more of her work. She literally spells the word GLAMOUR despite the grubby part here.

There is one very disturbing violent scene that many will not enjoy. I didn't like it one bit, and most women will not either. Whether it adds to the narrative or belongs in the film is up to you to decide. This is an "uncut" version so I guess Fulci wanted it in there.

There seems to be a transportation challenge in this movie as people on their feet can travel faster than automobiles. All the scenes are very interesting!

I will view "Duckling" again and again. "City..Dead" is probably worth a view once every five years or so.

      4 out of 5 stars Some Explanations.......2007-06-13

There's been a lot of grousing about the fact that these movies "aren't in 3D". That's what I thought, too, until I realized that they looked so lousy that something actually had to be wrong.
So, I went back to the instructions (which are weak to say the least) and discovered something I don't think these other buyers have.
You're supposed to test the equipment before you just dive in and watch the 3D versions of these DVDs.
There's a 'left eye/right eye' test, that really needs to be done first. What happened when I tried it, was that I discovered that my channels were reversed.
      Okay.
      What to do next?
The little junction/ amplifier box they include, has a "mode" button on it. You press it once and it reverses the projection, making the right and left eyes come out in the proper order.
The result is, the flicker is gone (mostly) and the movies are in 3D.
It's not terrific 3D, but it is stable and there's a depth that makes these old classics really come alive.
I must admit, I'm a real glutton for 3D, and having "Night Of The Living Dead" shown using the process, added greatly to the enjoyment for me. Plus it was cheap thrills: my copy of this set cost a mere $11.98 (your price may vary).
So I'm recommending this, with reservations, because a 3d version of any of these flicks is unlikely to ever come around again, and this is already out-of-print. Plus, the glasses look way cool.

1 out of 5 stars Not real 3-D.......2005-11-14

The only depth of any kind that you see might be a small section of the room floor or grass. Otherwise, no depth at all. These movies are NOT 3-D, and it is a complete ripoff.

The 3-D system that comes with it really works with real field-sequential movies, but you might as well buy the system with real 3-D movies (IMAX collection). Don't buy this! Even with real 3-D movies, the 3-D is good, but there is a lot of flicker.

2 out of 5 stars the other reviewers speak the truth..........2005-08-18

...these three films are not in real 3D. Some 3D elements were added, like computer-generated blood spatters or shards of flying glass, but these were not part of the original film (all three films are public-domain, so they can do whatever they wish with the prints).

However, the system that comes with this box set is very impressive when used with true 3D films (i.e., IMAX films Alien Encounter, Haunted Castle, etc. or 3D DVDs of 50s/80s flicks like Creature From the Black Lagoon, dial M for Murder, House of Wax, Jaws 3D, etc.).

I would recommend the Imax pack over this (also available at Amazon)--those films were filmed in "true 3D". Also, there is another 3D box set with just one movie: The Creeps. This is a more recent release and the DVD with this set is in true 3D and very good 3D at that.

Other movies you should pick up for this system are "SpyKids 3D: The Extreme 3D Edition (HQFS)" [make sure you get the HQFS version] and "3D Transitions". Santa vs. the Snowman is pretty good, too. These are probably the best of the titles out there for this system, other than the underground releases found on various auction sites (Andy Warhol's Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, It Came From Outer Space, etc.).

1 out of 5 stars Not 3D, this is criminal.......2005-05-01

These are not real 3D films, this should be made a criminal offence to con the public with this sort of rubbish, glasses perfect, films 2D and will always be 2D, so make sure you are buying real 3D movies when looking for 3D DVD's.

1 out of 5 stars Great system, but the movies ARE NOT IN 3-D !!!!!.......2003-01-23

First, you'll get a nice 3-D system and some great glasses that provide an excellent 3-D effect when watching 3-D movies. However, THE MOVIES IN THIS SET ARE NOT 3-D! They were shot as flat, standard movies, and these DVDs are still the same, flat versions, except processed so that these glasses are required to view them. They claim they are converted to 3-D but don't be fooled for a moment. It is outrageous that with hundreds of real 3-D movies out there, these people are pulling this hoax, especially when they also sell real 3-D stuff. This will result in making the public very angry. Avoid this set and buy the IMAX or HORROR ones instead.
