Premiering on ABC in 1968 and lasting just 51 episodes before its cancellation in 1970, Irwin Allen's fantasy series Land of the Giants has built a sizable (if you'll pardon the pun) fan base in subsequent decades thanks to its mix of adventure, science fiction, and camp; now those dedicated fans can enjoy the entire series in an impressive set that features a wealth of extras. The template for Giants is remarkably similar to that of Allen's Lost in Space; here, the passengers and crew of the commercial spacecraft The Spindrift encounters a mysterious energy force en route to London and finds themselves on a planet which parallels Earth in every way save one - its inhabitants are twelve times the size of the marooned crew. The protagonists are less tightly knit than Space's astronaut family Robinson - in fact, pilots Gary Conway and Don Marshall regularly butt heads with architect Don Matheson and entertainer Deanna Lund - though all seem to agree that orphan Stefan Arngrim is cute as a button and Kurt Kasznar is as much a pain in the neck as Dr. Smith (amusingly, Jonathan Harris turns up in this set in the episode "Pay the Piper"). But The Spindrift castaways' adventures are less juvenile than those of the later Lost in Space episodes, and the special effects (which cost the network a record-setting $250,000 per episode) are impressive for the period. The nine-DVD set for Land of the Giantscontains the series' entire network run, as well as the unaired pilot, which offers a similar take on the debut episode, "The Crash," minus John Williams' jazzy theme and other elements. Most of the surviving cast members (Kasznar passed away in 1979, and Heather Young is not included) is featured in interviews about their experiences on the show, and there are several home videos of producer Allen directing the program and interacting with the over sized props and sets. Also featured on the discs are galleries of publicity shots, episodic photos, show merchandise and of the photogenic Ms. Lund, and the MAD Magazine parody. Meanwhile, buyers can also pursue a reproduction of the comic book adaptation and a booklet with more cast interviews and photos, and check out a set of trading cards, a Spindrift key chain and crew iron-on patch - all of which is contained in the set's clever carrying case, which reproduces a wooden cage that held the Giants' heroes in one episode. Though casual admirers may balk at the Giant Collection price tag, diehards will undoubtedly appreciate having the entire set and quality extras at their disposal. -- Paul Gaita
Description
After their sub-orbital space craft is drawn into a space warp, the passengers and crew of the Spindrift, crash into a planet where everything is 12 times its normal size!
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Show!!!.......2007-09-11
I loved this show and watched many episodes with my family when I was young. Although I agree that the price is not ideal, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to own this 70's classic. I guess I should mention that I bought it last week when the Gold Box deal was $99.99. Anyway, it is a birthday present to myself...a steal at $99...worth every penny. I watched the first few episodes last night. The picture and sound quality are both excellent. The packaging is cute (wooden box with Land of Giants comic book, key chain, and patch), but not at all necessary. I strongly suspect that if they hadn't gone a little overboard on the packaging, the cost would have been less. Anyway, sacrifice a few lattes and lunches, buy the set, and think of it as an investment in nostalgia.
Must buy for Fans .......2007-09-11
If you're a fan of the series then this is a must own. If you never watched the show then you better rent first before you chuck over the cash. I'm a fan but I won't pay full price for this set so I got in on the half price sale. You can also find it cheaper on other sites like Ebay. It's hard to believe they kept the show on for two seasons while shows today hardly last one. The show still holds up well with great sets and camera work. This isn't a numbered set so I don't know how limited it is. Just think for about 30 bucks more you can get the ten season set of Stargate SG-1. A nice set but do some research before you buy.

MAGNIFICENT ALL TIME CULT IRWIN ALLEN MASTERPIECE WORTH EVERY DOLLAR
Contrary to extremely ignorant, short sighted libellous "garbage" comments
from clearly retarded and malignant "reviewer"(s) whose tasteless remarks
clearly show an addiction for recent rubbish 1990s and 2000s moronic fodder.

the price serve only to demonstrate the what irrelevant nonsense gets posted. You will buy this exclusive , rare set only once stop moaning.

Description
Special-effects wunderkind and genre master Byron Haskin (The War of the Worlds, The Outer Limits) won a place in the hearts of fantasy-film lovers everywhere with this gorgeously designed journey into the unknown. When his spaceship crash-lands on the barren wastelands of Mars, U.S. astronaut Commander "Kit" Draper (Paul Mantee) must fight for survival, with a pet monkey seemingly his only companion. But is he alone? Shot in vast Techniscope and blazing Technicolor, Robinson Crusoe on Mars is an imaginative and beloved techni-marvel of classic science fiction.
Customer Reviews:
The neatest sci-fi of the 60s.......2007-09-16
I first saw this movie in a theatre as part of double sci-fi (the other movie was the time portal which has been renamed the time travelers) and it caught my attention and it has never left. One of the best sci-fi's ever.
Deaf and hard of hearing people once again frozen out of classic cinema.......2007-09-12
What, no closed captions or English subtitles? For forty bucks, you'd think Paramount/Criterion could afford to make this accessible to the millions of us with hearing impairment.
I saw this film in the theater upon its original release, but it pretty much went by me because of my deafness. I had looked forward to seeing it again, but I'm disappointed to find that even 43 years later, I'm still not going to be able to understand the dialogue (or monologue).
I'd like to give it 4-5 stars based on others' reviews, but as long as Paramount doesn't give a damn about people like me, it's going to have to get a low rating.
courage in hopeless circumstances.......2007-08-23
An astronaut searches for food and water after an orbital mission to Mars crashes on the surface of the planet. Obviously low budget 60s sci-fi rises above the B-grade norm with sympathetic main performance, good pace and signs of intellect in plot.
Science in science fiction.......2007-08-12
Robinson Crusoe put the science in science fiction. There are no "noisey" ships or explosions in a vacuum. Our hero uses telecourses and video before compact portable video cameras were invented. He uses true American ingenuity to design a clock, find oxygen, and remain safe until he is taken back home. This film is truly different than science fantasies like E.T. or Star Wars. The score is magnificent and thrilling. And, best of all, it shows what all kids in the sixties knew--the conquest of space could easily be done with World War II surplus equipment.
Wonderful film for all ages.......2007-08-10
Count me in with the rest of the gang waiting rabidly for this release. I saw this film several times as a child and was totally engrossed in the idea of a trip to Mars and the adventure it could bring. That adventure is grandly represented by this wonderful film, which allowing for a few flaws in the plot, does at least attempt to present the story with some scientific merit and plausible ideas.
The cinematography is excellent! The stark, desolate landscape is both thrilling and chilling in it's magnificent but achingly isolated beauty. The lead actor, Paul Mantee, does a fine job of conveying the loneliness and edge of insanity mindset that comes from being in a situation of despair and solitude.
And best of all, you can watch this one with your kids, grandkids, spouse or preacher, for that matter. Good clean wholesome fun for all ages.
Highly recommended!

First time on DVD! Initiate jump sequence for feature-length tales about key events in the B5 chronology.
Movie 1: The Gathering
Alien envoys come to the giant space station in the pilot that launched the five-year TV series.
Movie 2
Amazon.com
The Babylon 5 pilot movie The Gathering was originally broadcast in 1993 a full year ahead of the regular show. A somewhat dull tale of an attempt to assassinate Koch, the Vorlon ambassador to B5, the feature served to introduce Commander Jeffery Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) as well as familiarize the audience with the unique environment of a five-mile-long space station in the year 2257. Missing many of the main cast, and suffering from a leaden pace and mediocre music score, series creator J Michael Straczynski later improved The Gathering by tightening the cut for a special edition (the version released on DVD), adding some deleted character moments and commissioning a new score from series composer Christopher Franke.
Four new TV movies were part of the deal to syndicate Babylon 5. In the Beginning is a prelude set 10 years before Babylon 5, telling the story of the Earth-Minbari war. Told retrospectively, many of the mysteries revealed gradually in the main series are recounted, making the show a collection of spoilers for newcomers while adding little for established fans. It is effective to see events only previously talked about, and enjoyable to have most of the main cast playing younger versions of themselves. River of Souls is a self-contained adventure featuring a return of the Soul Hunters from Season One, while Thirdspace offers a spectacular Lovecraftian space opera which slots into the saga after the end of the Shadow War. A Call to Arms is the most important of the TV films, laying the ground for the future TV series Crusade. Set five years after the Shadow War, it tells the story of a Drahk revenge attack on Earth. A final showcase for Bruce Boxleitner as Sheridan, the story fits between fifth-season episodes "Objects at Rest" and "Sleeping in Light." The cliffhanger ending sets the scene for new starship Excalibur to boldly go on a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds and find a cure for the Shadow virus infecting the Earth. --Gary S. Dalkin

Babylon 5 The Movie Collection.......2007-09-02
Turns out that most of the movies were not very good, just the one that shows how things started.
Babylon 5 Movie Collection.......2007-07-22
The DVDs were without flaw. The movies hold one's interest but; not as well as the series. The first and last movies (The Gathering - A Call to Arms) were the best of the five. For the price you can't go wrong.
Babylon 5 - The Movie Collection.......2007-06-09
Two of the movies skip in a few places. The movies were good. Came in good time
It keeps getting better and better!.......2007-06-06
Babylon 5 - The Gathering: "And so it begins..."
A good pilot to an excellent series, Babylon 5 - The Gathering, brings to the screen the parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major station under Human control in neutral territory.
The setting is the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3. The year is 2257, nine years after the Earth-Minbari War (one year before the series begins), and representatives from the four major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, Narns, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at B5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. The arrival, however, of the fifth major space-faring race's ambassador, the Vorlon Kosh, will result in quite a bit of turbulence...
Michael O'Hare, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, carry out their performances well though one can tell that they are a bit uneasy, as is the case with most series in the beginning. 4 Stars
In the Beginning: Guaranteed to shed a tear
The year is 2278 and an elderly Emperor Mollari sensing his end is nearing narrates the story of the Earth-Minbari War and its heroes to a young Centauri boy, his sister and their nanny.
Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors' performances are highly commendable.
In the Beginning contains a lot of information found within the first four seasons of B5 and then more, therefore, it should be viewed at some point during season V, preferably right before Sleeping in Light, the last of the original episodes. 5 Stars
Thirdspace: "It's anti-life itself"
Though I haven't yet read the book (for which I've heard good things), Thirdspace the movie was quite a disappointment.
Set during Season IV, the crew of Babylon 5 recovers a huge ancient artifact, which when activated could bring more doom and destruction than the Shadows themselves...
1) To start with there is no Garibaldi, Gkar or Londo and their absence is definitely felt.
2) Everybody is too stiff. Performances seem forced and not natural, especially Dellen and Vir who are not their usual selves.
3) Sheridan scoots through an intense space battle in a space suit (!), dodging both friendly and hostile fire (!), plants a nuke manually (!), gets out avoiding the guardians (!), survives the nuclear blast and then jokes with Delenn... Hmmm... Am I missing something?
4) Finally the elevated level of horror served as a repellent more than anything else.
2.5 Stars
The River of Souls: "Life in Death... Immortality!"
The year is 2263, six months after President Sheridan's departure for Minbar, and the Soul Hunters return with an unexpected visit to Babylon 5... en mass.
Though most of the major characters are absent (similarly to Thirdspace), excluding Captain Lochley, Security Chief Zack Allen, Lt Corwin, and Michael Garibaldi, the River of Souls turns out to be excellent in every possible way; the setting, the plot, the dialogues, the special effects, and the music are all wonderful!
There is also the surprise, though not great, appearance by Martin Sheen, who probably should have stuck to the original plan and played the archeologist instead of the Soul Hunter. 4.5 Stars
A Call to Arms: Now this is a Babylon 5 Movie!
AMAZING from start to finish, A Call to Arms brings to the screen the long awaited conflict with the hated Drakh! The Year is 2267 and President Sheridan is contacted by the Techno-Mages who have been keeping tabs on the Shadows' former servants/allies and who inform him that the Drakh are on the warpath. Their target... Earth!
Bruce Boxleitner, Jerry Doyle, Jeff Conaway, Tracy Scoggins, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the special effects are simply incredible!
I wish I could give it 6 Stars!!! KEEP'EM COMING!!!
THEY DID A BETTER JOB ON THIS SET OF DVDS........2007-05-28
THIS SET OF DVDS HAS MORE COMMENTARY THAN THE SEASON 1-5 DVDS OF BABYLON 5. IT DOES NOT HAVE A LOT OF EXTRAS, BUT THEY CERTAINLY PUT MORE TIME, THOUGHT, EFFORT, AND MONEY INTO THIS SET THAN THEY DID THE OTHERS. THE PACKAGING IS A LETTER BETTER TOO. IN THE END THE MOVIES ARE VERY GOOD. MY FAVORITES WERE "IN THE BEGINNING", AND THE CRUSADE PILOT "A CALL TO ARMS." "A CALL TO ARMS," IS AS MUCH A CRUSADE STORY AS A BABYLON 5 STORY. I DO NOT KNOW WHY THEY DID NOT PUT IT ON THE CRUSADE SET OF DVDS.

Great Trilogy, Third Movie Lacking.......2007-09-09
Loved the first and second movie. The third one got a little bit unbelievable. It was like they started making up their own rules. In that respect, it was difficult to get into what was going on. But the effects and fight scenes were amazing.
Matrix Collection.......2007-09-05
I really like how much is included in the set. The Animatrix is an extra bonus!
THIS IS AWESOME.......2007-08-23
For any true Matix fan this is a must. The only thing better is the HD version of this.
Cheap.......2007-08-20
Cheap box -- it was already falling apart when I got it. I bought it on here b/c the ones in the store look like junk. I thought the Matrix would have been a bit more high def than what they produced it as, but on a good TV you can completely see the non-HD in all its glory.
Movies are good, though. And the animatricies are pretty fun as well.
A Great Collection.......2007-08-03
This is a great collection for anyone who's not exactly the most fanatical fan but is decently obsessed. The movies are in great condition. While there are a lot of featurettes, I do wish they were longer. Otherwise, there isn't a better collection of the Matrix Trilogy elsewhere.

Customer Reviews:
I really am enjoying it but you should be aware..........2007-09-03
I am two-thirds of the way through the films. These are the things you should be aware of:
1. A large minority of the films are not SciFi, by any reasonable definition. For instance there are 6 Hercules movies, and 4 or 5 jungle/island adventures.
2. It's misleading to call these "classics", except in the sense of "old". There are several made for TV movies, here which were forgotten the day after they were shown.
3. The majority of the films are very, very bad. ("Teenagers from Outer Space" is among the best 5.) If you like to do the Mystery Science 3000 thing, you will be in heaven. Otherwise, not!
That said, did I get my $15 worth of entertainment? Yes, several times over.
Not Good.......2007-08-13
I am an old Sci-Fi fan, and have really enjoyed movies purchases on Amazon, such as War of the Worlds (1953 version), THEM, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, The Day the Earth Stood Still, etc.
I figured that there would be at least a few good movies out of the 50. Safe bet, right? I have watched approximately 15 of them so far, and have yet to find one I can stomach for more than 10 minutes. I don't know if I'll have the patience to watch any more.
I'm sad to offer such a negative review, but this purchase was a waste of my time and money.
Weird but done.......2007-07-20
After seeing this box at a friend of mine, I wanted it too. Too much weirdness in a box for that little money. Of course there are some really bad movies, really really bad. But the simple fact that those exist is worth the pay already!
Great Mix of B Movies!.......2007-06-28
Have a slow Saturday afternoon? Pop in one of these DVD's and go back to your childhood. This is a great collection (for a great price)of old movies that you would probably never see on TV. Some are better than others, and some are not worth much, but all-in-all, I find watching these to be relaxing and fun. And isn't that what it's all about anyway?
Not bad for the money.......2007-06-08
While this pack isn't worthy of a 5 star rating, it's still a good value. Some of these titles I had purchased earlier at a cost of $5.00 a piece. The quality is not great, but they're watchable.

Description
One of the most influential, radical science-fiction films ever made and a mind-bending free-form travelogue, La jetée (The Jetty) and Sans soleil (Sunless) couldn't seem more differentyet they're the twin pillars of one of the most daring and uncompromising careers in cinema history. Chris Marker, filmmaker, poet, novelist, photographer, editor, and now videographer and digital multimedia artist, has been challenging moviegoers, philosophers, and himself for years with his complex queries about time, memory, and the rapid advancement of life on this planet. These two filmsa tale of time travel told in still images and a journey to Africa and Japanremain his best-loved and most widely seen.

La Jetee: genius........2007-09-17
La Jetee (Chris Marker, 1962)
I'm not terribly sure what I can say about Chris Marker's La Jetee that hasn't been said by just about everyone else, so I'll keep this short. You probably already know this, but if you don't, it was the inspiration for David and Janet Peoples' screenplay for the Terry Gilliam film 12 Monkeys, rightly considered by the various-and-sundry on the IMDB message boards to be one of the top 250 movies of all time. (Interestingly, La Jetee has a slightly higher numerical rating; it lacks enough votes to secure a top-250 placing.) But where Gilliam molded the storyline into his most accessible (and commercially successful) film, Marker seemed to have no interest at all in making something accessible, or even likable; it's hard, in fact, to even call La Jetee a film, in the sense we know the word. That, of course, makes it all the more enchanting.
The story (if you haven't seen 12 Monkeys, a quick synopsis: a guy is sent through time in order to try and prevent the war that effectively ended civilization on Earth) is told, with one stunning exception, in a series of still images, over which there is narration. A story is being told, with accompanying pictures. The film, which clocks in at only twenty-eight minutes, barely draws the outline of this story, leaving the viewer to fill in as many of the blanks as he or she wishes. It's a bold move, and when it doesn't work, it's awful. Here, it works on every level it can.
If it were just that, it would be a good movie. Interesting. A nice idea with a cool experimental sheen to it. But Marker turns the whole structure on its head halfway through the movie with a scene that defines "minimalism," but within the context of what we've seen up to this point in the movie, it comes as a shock, an amazing revelation. I won't tell you what happens (other than to say it's a technical thing, not a plot point), because you should feel that shock for yourself the first time you see this movie. But what makes it great it's that it's not just an experimental quirk for the sake of being an experimental quirk. It takes all the notions you have conceived, consciously or not, about these two societies Marker has given us, and twists them around. I can't say any more about it without distorting the perceptions Marker goes to such pains to create; you just have to see it for yourself. And you should, because this is, quite simply, an amazing piece of work. And, really, if you can spare an hour and a half to watch the latest Adam Sandler vehicle, you can carve out half an hour to watch this, no? **** ½
Can't Switch Off Subtitles.......2007-08-22
Both "La Jetée" and "Sans Soliel" are available with French- or English-language narration, and this Criterion DVD carries both soundtracks, along with English subtitles. However, my copy of the disc isn't able to switch the subtitles off whenever I want to listen to the English soundtracks. Although there is a command to turn off the subtitles on the disc's menu, it apparently doesn't work. If you are an Anglophone viewer who only plans to listen to the French narrations, this won't be a problem. On the other hand, the subtitles become a real distraction if you ever want to watch to the English versions.
I consider both films to be true masterpieces of the cinema, and I have a high regard for the video manufacturer Criterion, which released this disc as well as exemplary discs of other excellent films. On many other Criterion releases, the titles are easy to switch off, even if the film is in only one language. "La Jetée" and "Sans Soliel" were clearly intended by director Chris Marker to be watched in either French or English. Why Criterion would compel the viewer to read the English subtitles -- even when listening to the English narration -- is a mystery beyond my ken.
Essay on Narrative, Memory, Poetry and Identity (Personal, Collective, Global).......2007-08-11
La Jetee (1962) is one of the seminal works of the French New Wave as well as one of the all-time great science fiction films. It deserves all the respect it receives but what is really so amazing is how much is achieved with so little. Made entirely of still black and white images--of WWII cities in ruin, of an airport observation deck in the fifties, of generic shots of a woman one could find in any magazine, of a group of men in one of the many tunnels beneath Paris--and a mundane but strangely compelling voice-over, Le Jetee is not so much a film as a series of random images linked only by the narrative spell of a single voice.
We view only one still photo at a time and we assign meaning only because the narrator tells us the significance of each. It doesn't sound like much to describe it so and yet because the technology is so primtive we are somehow less distracted than we would be were this a full-fledged cinematic production with action sequences and a pulsing soundtrack. This is basically a slide-show and that is the key to this films appeal. This film essay works because it asks for a different kind of attention than we are used to giving films. La Jetee asks for a much more personal kind of attention, the kind of attention we give to our own photo albums, slide shows and dreams. But, also, since many of the images look like they could have come from LIFE or National Geographic there is also a kind of generic quality to the slide show and we are lulled into a kind of attentive trance as we get the feeling that Marker is making a connection between our own personal memories/dreams/markers and the generic memories/dreams/markers of the culture at large. Watching this film is like looking at a pile of old magazines and contemplating our own deepest dreams/desires at the same time--perhaps viewing both as vehicles leading to the same place.
The presumption that there is a link between the personal and the universal is not a new idea, it is a presumption that various artists and essayists (Montaigne is the most obvious example) have held throughout history. The idea has developed in two ways. Some (Noam Chomsky is the most famous in our day) argue that the deep structures of the mind are the same in all men regardless of cultural/racial/gender differences. Others argue that man is no particular way but that he is shaped by the culture in which he lives. The former group celebrate universalism (or globalism, a word which began to be used after WWII) and the fact that we are all generic creatures capable of understanding each other. The latter group (and many science fiction writers fall into this group) fear that the more homogenous and pervasive the mass/universal/global culture becomes, the more homogenous man/existence becomes. Marker is in the latter group, so it is no surprise that he has a strange love/hate relationship with technology--for technology is seen to be the thing that facilitates the spreading of sameness as well as the thing that allows us to meditate upon it. In his films there are no special effects nor any of the usual visual or audio markers that we usually equate with science fiction, and the matter-of-fact monotone of the voiceover gives his films the feel of a documentary but a documentary that we somehow feel compelled to watch because as the speaker drones on we are reminded of our own archive of memories and our own personal views on the matters raised. La Jetee alerts us to the importance we place on memory and the recall process in establishing and maintaining an identity in an image saturated world but it also asks us to question the reliability and authenticity of memory and to what extent personal memory has been invaded/colonized by collective memory. In the later Sans Soleil (which makes use of moving images and color and in many ways resembles a contemporary travelogue or catalogue of all the various cultures that co-exist today), Marker alerts us to how conditioned our responses have become. Even in the presence of one exotic culture after another all the narrator can muster is a kind of bored resignation that there is no escape (except perhaps in death, a device/conceit that Godard also makes use of as early as Pierrot le Fou and as recently as Notre Musique) from the universalizing cultural processing machine that we have each internalized and that reduces all to a monotonous sameness.
That said, the films are at once both generic and intensely personal. The latter film is perhaps the more intimate as it is delivered as a personal letter. What is personal about existence and what merely generic is the question that informs every still and every moving image in a Marker film. This strangely unsolvable riddle is what gives the films their timeless power.
This is film essay/art of the highest order.
You are traveling through another dimension. A dimension not only of..........2007-07-29
aka Christian François Bouche-Villeneuve! Well, no need wondering why he changed his name. No left-wing group would have taken him in with a posh handle like that :)
How to explain Chris Marker? How to explain these works? Gorin said something true about La Jetée when he pointed out that the one moment of motion in this film is "the birth of cinema". It's lodged in the midst of 28 minutes of what I'll call still life montage. He called it a miracle moment and it is. To have this dead woman, alive in a past he's returned to, re-animated at that moment with the birds singing as if it were the first Spring on earth is breathtaking.
Sans Soleil is about memory and sight and sound and cinema and the whole world within and without. Grandiose, ridiculous language comes too easily while trying to describe this man's vision. It's possible to fall into a reverie while watching this. It's musical in it's being "unpinned" and (un)bounded by the viewer's imagination.
The cliché "dreamlike" is a good word to use here, but these pieces are about so many things I can only say: watch them and change.
Je ne peux pas le recommend, mais..........2007-07-21
These two films are both simply astounding; we've already been over that. The idea to include them on one DVD should seem like a good idea, and it certainly makes for a very convenient package. Yet anyone who is familiar with Chris Marker's films, particularly these two, knows that they are not made for the sake of convenience--for that, you go to the comedian Gilliam and his 12 Monkeys. There is no "one-stop-shop" for classic Chris Marker films. Moreover, a film like Sans Soleil does not benefit from a classy DVD release. It has a certain rough edge, a grainy intensity to it, that the Criterion treatment cannot hope to improve upon. The same might be said for La Jetee. Part of the appeal of the film, for me at least, is its potential to blindside its viewers, which can hardly happen on a double bill such as this. If I were to put La Jetee on a DVD (which might not be necessary), I'd probably include it as an Easter egg with Godard's Alphaville, say. Or, since there is actually a Criterion edition of Armageddon, one might also hide it there, if only to mitigate the overbearing sense of waste. Of course, this is only wishful thinking on my part. See these films on separate occasions if you can; this disc should be a last resort.

Book your return flight to the Satellite of Love and join Joel, Mike and the 'bots for another fearful foursome of flops in this collection of episodes from the Peabody Award-winning series Mystery Science Theater 3000. First up on Volume 11's menu of muck is Season Two's Ring of Terror, with Joel, Crow and Tom Servo riffing furiously on a half-baked story of fraternity pranks gone wrong; it's partnered with another interminable episode of the Bela Lugosi serial The Phantom Creeps. Next is Season Four's The Indestructible Man, in which Joel performs a frightening imitation of the movie's star, Lon Chaney Jr.; an episode of The Undersea Kingdom is also celebrated with a parade that goes predictably awry. Season Four's Tormented features headless ghosts, a guilt-ridden Richard Carlson, and Joel stuck in a ventilation shaft, plus a day-rescuing round of happy thoughts. And last but not least is Season Ten's Horrors of Spider Island, a German-made monster movie about dancers on a deserted island and a giant spider than transforms their manager into a hideous creature; Mike also undergoes a man-to-spider switcheroo after getting trapped in the 'bots' homemade spider web. For veteran MiSTies and pop culture fanatics, it doesn't get funnier than this.
Extras include theatrical trailers for all of the films save Ring of Terror; a brief interview with Tormented director Bert I. Gordon, his daughter Susan, and star Joseph Turkel, and wrap-arounds from the syndicated Mystery Science Hour, with Mike Nelson as an obsequious Jack Perkins, are also included. However, the best supplement is the second MST3K Jukebox, which compiles some of the show's funniest and most memorable musical numbers, including "Sidehackin',"Joel and the 'bots' garage-rock tribute to The Sidehackers and the incredible "Patrick Swayze Christmas" from Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. --Paul Gaita

Too much Joel..........2007-09-07
I have bought EVERY one in the series, and as long as they are made I will buy them. After having time to watch the difference between Mike leading the show and Joel, Joel is boring. Mike was a writer and then stared as the lead. Mike's shows just seem to be a great deal funnier than the ones with Joel. There are too many episodes in this pack with Joel. I have watched the first 2 and the movies and the comedy are a bit boring. But I will keep watching and buying one of my all time favorite shows.
Mystery Science #11.......2007-09-04
Quick delivery-good and/or new condition. Haven't watch the whole DVD, but so far-it's very funny
Four more with Joel, Mike and the 'Bots.......2007-09-03
Some movies are so bad, they're good. Other movies are just plain bad. Fortunately, there is Mystery Science Theater 3000 that can sweeten these bitter pills.
In Volume 11 of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, we get another four awful movies. The absolute clunker in the bunch is the first one, Ring of Terror, a story of a fraternity prank gone horribly wrong. As is typically the case, it isn't as much the plot that is the problem as the execution: with bad writing, acting, direction and effects, this supposed tale of terror is around as scary as a rock. This film comes with an episode of the serial, The Phantom Creeps.
The Indestructible Man has Lon Chaney, Jr., who towards the end of his career was in a lot of bad movies. In this one, he is an executed convict who is revived by well-meaning scientists and rampages against the partners who set him up. This one also has a serial episode, in this case an episode of Undersea Kingdom.
Tormented has Richard Carlson as a pianist who is responsible for the death of an ex-lover. Facing blackmail is bad enough, but he also has to deal with the woman's ghost. Or is it all his imagination? This one is directed by Bert I. Gordon, a semi-legendary B-movie director also responsible for movies like Village of the Giants and Attack of the Puppet People.
Finally, there is Horrors of Spider Island, a poorly dubbed movie about some dancers shipwrecked on an island with a single semi-large spider who dies rather early on. It does, however, transform a person into some sort of monster who preys on the others. Once again, it's not the premise but the execution that ruins this movie.
All the movies are given plenty of dead-on, funny commentary by humans Mike and Joel and the robot pals Crow and Tom Servo. The idea of quipping wittily over a bad movie is hardly original to Mystery Science Theater, but this show turned it into an art. If you are a fan of Mystery Science Theater, this is another collection worth watching.
Love it!.......2007-09-02
I cannot get enough of MST3K! Oh, bring on those "B," "C," or worse movies! How can anyone NOT appreciate the humor?
I have all the boxed sets and the single releases. Love 'em! Even my sons like them (of course, they can't tell their friends that they do).
Looking forward to the release of Vol 12!!!!!!!!!
Solid collection of episodes from TV's greatest show.......2007-08-31
This is certainly one of the better collections of MST3K. Each of the four episodes is a winner. The Indestructible Man has a nonstop barrage of riffs, the Ring of Terror is great fun for fans of the show, Tormented is a solid episode, and Horrors of Spider island is from season ten when these guys had perfected the art of riffing. The extras are icing on the cake--especially a glimpse into MST history with the MST3K Hour sketches. Enjoy the old-fashioned cheesy horror movies, laugh out loud until you can hardly breathe, and watch in groups to enhance the effect.

Lots of repeats, but some new movies included in this set.......2007-08-31
Read the list of movies carefully before you buy this one. One of the problems with these mega-sets now is that they have a tendency to feature the same movies in many different collections. This one has many repeats on it but at least it has quite a few new movies on it(new to me anyway).
I'll repeat my standard warning, If great transfers and audio are what you want,STAY AWAY, for everyone else this is a great way to build your self a collection of DVDS. You will find a few treasures here and maybe even a few movies that you will come to love.
Great Saturday night veg out.......2007-07-30
These films may be old and public domain and made on a small budget, however for the most part the producers of these films knew how to entertain the audience for an hour or so without the need for special effects.
I don't have high expectations when I go to watch one of these films, like Werewolf Woman. But that can be good because one makes the effort to get into it, which a lot of todays big budget films seem to miss the point on.
So I would recommend that you get this 50 movie pack collection, sit down with your friends and have a great night in.!
Better be a fan.......2007-06-25
Don't get me wrong I think it is great they are available on DVD, but there is some better stuff available and I would rather have two or three great instead of 50 okay. If you just want to see this then it may be worth the price and you can always donate it to the library or a vets organization. Personally I won't keep this set because my shelves are already full of DVDs I don't go back and watch regularly. What do you think will happen with 50 so-so movies? So unless you are a big fan of some of these movies, don't bother.
Peter Watkin's WAR GAME gem.......2007-06-05
The 1965 BBC nuclear war horror/docudrama THE WAR GAME is the gem buried in this Mill Creek comprise of 50 movies, entitled,NIGHTMARE WORLDS.Typical of other 12 double-sided DVD offerings in this series, the movies range from very good to bogus to the max(with most in range of what were once-called great Drive-in flicks).Peter Watkins'THE WAR GAME,however,is acknowledged masterpiece which so graphically presented aftermath of a "limited nuclear strike" against Great Britain(in mid-60's as consequence of escalation of crisis confrontation between formerly powerful NATO forces and now non-existent USSR)that was banned by BBC that initially oversaw its production. The film is on DISC 5/Side B. It's in very clear to very grainy BxW.It is 48 minutes long and is scary as hell.Scenes depicting MEDICAL TRIAGE of survivors;peremptory execution of violators of Martial Law(from food rioters to mob-killers of military & medical personnel);and the autistic state of thousands of children "hospitalized" in refugee camps, are staggering in impact."This is NUCLEAR WAR,"declares the narrator in classic,British understatement. It is Nightmare World,
indeed;well worth purchase of the other entertaining "thrillers" to view a TRUE and still possible cause in The ultimate in Global Warming...
Just My 2 cents worth.......2007-05-26
Pretty much what everyone else has said, it's a collection of wonderfully good & bad films, dating from the 1920s to the 1990s, some of the transers are fair to good, others are poor, but "worth every penny".
One complaint. Why do these comapnies insist on having their watermarks pop up ever 10-15 minutes for 20 seconds throughout the film? It's most annoying. And I buy DVDs to get away from that sort of thing. (And it's put me off buying any more from "Mill Creek"). And seriously apart from advertising it's pointless. My local community station shows films all the time where this happens. I'm assuming they just buy the boxed set and broadcast without clearance.
Only other disappointment with this set. One of the disc sleeves had the BBC documentary from the 1960's "War Games" listed. I got most excited. The film on the disc is "Flight 412". Sad.
Overall, worth getting.

Great For Someone Who Doesn't Have It Already.......2007-08-21
At the beginning of this year I decided to finally see what the X-Files is all about and fell in love with the first two seasons. I went for the more cheap slim pack dollar sets instead of the original releases that were 80 dollars. However with the slim pack sets you weren't given any of the extra features. However once I heard the announcement of a complete set of the originals plus the movie and extras from the mythology sets I decided to forego buying the other slim pack sets and just buying the complete collection. The set has each of the nine seasons, the Fight the Future, and the threads of mythology disc with four featurettes. Each actual season comes with the bonus features that were released on the original X-Files sets which include deleted scenes, tv spots, commentaries, documentaries, and more for each specific season.
I say that if you are a huge fan of X-Files or want to complete your X-Files collection this is a must buy.
Here we go again..........2007-08-15
This product, according to Fox, gathers together all nine seasons, the film, and the Mythology Threads featurettes off the Mythology collections. The nine seasons are thankfully in the original release format, with all special features included. The feature film appears to have the same contents as the current DVD release as well. As for the featurettes, they appear on a disc of their own.
For a box set this big (61 discs), it's priced fairly reasonably as opposed to the 9-season collection that can be found elsewhere on Amazon. However, Fox needs to make sure this is the last time they re-dip the series; maybe they should release it on Blu-Ray to make the HD fanboys happy.
Be warned: if you bought the initial season-by-season releases (not the slimpaks) and the movie separately, there's nothing new here. The featurettes on the last disc are also nothing new, as they appeared on the pointless Mythology arc sets that were released on DVD a while back. However, for anyone new to the series or anyone who's been hesitating to buy the series on DVD, this is a great pickup for its price.
5 stars for the series, 3.5 stars for this set.

Customer Reviews:
I finally bought it.......2007-09-08
I noticed the other day that the set is out of print so i grabbed a set.It sure put a big dent in my wallet but its well worth buying. Now i only see two sellers that have it and im glad i got a set before i lost out.I do have some complaints though.First off my set had two loose disks and they had a scuff on each disk so i watched them first.I was surprised when they played just fine so i guess it will be ok.Next is kind of a strange thing. Each season has a booklet with all the episodes listed and their description.Season 2-5 had the correct booklet but season 1 has a season 2 booklet. Its not a big deal i guess as on the back of each book of disks they have all the episodes listed.I guess i will keep the set as the supplier i bought it from doesnt have any more for sale on amazon. The video and audio are excellent with some nice extras.Im half way through season 1 and will finish it today. Then i will continue to season 2.Overall im happy i guess seeing as its OOP now and it will be very hard to find a set.
