This surprisingly satisfying horror movie centers on a mermaid--but it's hardly one of the giggly types from Peter Pan. Rufus Sewell and Carla Gugino play a couple of small-time circus people who discover that an eccentric old man keeps a genuine mermaid in a water-filled tank. Dreaming of an invitation from Ringling Bros., Sewell steals the mermaid and loads her on a ship for America. But in the middle of the Atlantic, the hungry mermaid shows her darker side--and Gugino learns that she may be linked to the mermaid in unexpected ways. She Creature was no doubt made on a low budget, but it looks excellent and the above-average script gives the strong cast firm ground to stand on. The mermaid herself (Rya Kihlsted) is both lovely and eerie. All in all, an enjoyable homage to classic horror films. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars A Mermaid Legend from a Different Perspective. .......2007-03-20

Great cast- Rya Kihlstedt (as the mermaid) was hypnotic. I really enjoyed the depiction of the mermaid and the way she was perceived by other characters in the movie. Feelings for the mermaid would range from anger, to fear, fascination, attraction, curiosity, and of course, horror. I think that certainly applies to anything we don't quite understand. It's always fun to delve into the darker side of Mermaid lore. A fun movie to watch if you like this genre.

5 out of 5 stars A Sexy and Scary Mermaid Film........2006-11-15

This film was made as part of a television series of films using old 1950s' American-International film titles, but having no relationship to the original films' storylines. This particular film is a highly literate and well-directed story of an 1800s' carnival huckster who greedily steals a REAL (and sexily good-looking and bare-breasted) mermaid with the intent of using her as a traveling exhibit. Unfortunately--during an ocean voyage to the United States from England--things don't work out as planned, and chaos and terror ensue as the film builds to a horrifying climax. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. One caveat: for some reason, the volume of this DVD's soundtrack is very low, and you'll really have to crank-up your system in order to hear what's going on!

4 out of 5 stars Good little tale.......2006-08-28

(3.5/5 stars) Curious that Stan Winston's name had his name stamped all over this production, given the fact the creature effects factor so minimally in the film. Nonetheless, this is a pretty cool grade B horror film. A group of English hucksters kidnaps a real, live mermaid despite warnings from her captor. They plan to head to the states to make a fortune on the sideshow circuit. Wise move, or not? Similarities with "King Kong" aside, this made-for-cable movie has much going for it: it makes good use of its limited budget by establishing a decent atmosphere, adapting a good story and getting some believable performances from its cast. In fact, lack of a large budget might be an asset for a horror movie because it forces the filmmakers to be resourceful and work within their budgets in order to be effective. Films, such as "Night of the Living Dead" and "Halloween" come to mind as being successful because they relied on atmosphere, story, music and characters rather than special effects and established actors. Given the dearth of mermaid stories, seeing the legendary creature come to life in a horror film is a singular treat. I cannot very well compare this to the 1956 movie by the same name because I have not seen that one. On its own merits, however, this one is good.

3 out of 5 stars A KILLER MERMAID!!.......2006-07-18

This is not exactly my cup of tea since I am a fan of mermaid movies!! I am most particularly fond of SPLASH, NIGHT TIDE and Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid. This mermaid movie is graphic and it's mermaid is evil...although very mysterious and beautiful!
It's not an awful movie, but definetely not my favorite mermaid movie!!

3 out of 5 stars THIS GIRL'S GOT GILLS.......2006-06-02

Another entry in the Stan Winston CREATURE FEATURES, remakes of older horror films. This is not a faithful remake of the sixties' version, but an updated one, in which a lovely mermaid is captured by an old gent who finds himself falling under her malevolent spell. She is kidnapped by a carnival showman played with great relish by Rufus Sewell; he whisks her off to America and while on board their vessel, she wreaks havoc.
Carla Gugino co-stars as Sewell's lover, and she finds herself mesmerized by the lovely but lethal mermaid.
It tends to get a little confusing at times but there is a commendable eeriness to it, but the ending is a little veiled.

By the time the pair of bloodshot, gun-toting, Rastafarian eyeballs appears, you know you're witnessing the birth of a new cult film. In the delirious Freaked, a sleazy multinational corporation hires a spoiled-rotten former child star named Ricky Coogin (Alex Winter, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure) to be the spokesman for a toxic biochemical fertilizer. When Ricky goes down to the poverty-stricken third world country where the toxin is used, he---along with his best friend and a comely anti-corporate activist (Megan Ward, Joe's Apartment)--get sidetracked to a freakshow presented by the flamboyant Elijah C. Skuggs (Randy Quaid, Kingpin). But Skuggs doesn't just display freaks, he creates them, and Ricky is going to be his masterpiece. This is only the beginning of a crass, tasteless, and hysterical (in both senses of the word) movie. Co-writer/co-director Winter and his pals pile on joke after idiosyncratic joke (clearly influenced by the shotgun-style humor of Airplane! and Mad magazine). You can feel that they fell all over themselves with laughter when they conceived each bit--no tepid Hollywood committee would have turned a movie's love interest into a double-gendered conjoined twin or cast Mr. T as a Bearded Lady, along with such an eclectic bunch as Bobcat Goldthwait, Brooke Shields, and an uncredited Keanu Reeves. Freaked is clearly a labor of love that deserves to find its infatuated audience. This dvd features a bushel of extras, including some unjustly deleted scenes. --Bret Fetzer

Description

A company that produces a toxic chemical tries to improve its image via popular spokesperson, Ricky Coogan. Ricky travels to South America to get a first-hand look at the chemical's effects and finds himself at a mutant freak farm. Elijah, who runs the farm, is only too happy to have new subjects on which to try his freak machine. The very chemical that Ricky is supposed to promote is the one responsible for creating the great variety of freaks.

5 out of 5 stars Those who ignore this film will stand knee deep in the blood of their children.......2006-06-02

Despite being one of the most overlooked and underpromoted films upon its release in 1993, most of the cult following for FREAKED never saw the film until much later. This hysterical debut feature from Tom Stern and Alex Winter began life with plenty of promise: a funny script, two talented up-and-coming comedy directors, a great ensemble cast, plenty of shock value, and even cross-promotion merchandising (HIDEOUS MUTANT FREEKZ action figures made their way to stores before the film's title was changed, and are now considered valuable collectors items). However, the film was shuffled into obscurity thanks to a change in the corporate leadership of Twentieth Century Fox. FREAKED had only a limited theatrical release and little fanfare when it finally hit home video.

FREAKED is the tale of one-time child actor (and full time jerk), Ricky Coogan (Winter) who makes a Faustian deal with the EES (Everything Except Shoes) Corporation to promote a dangerous chemical fertilizer, Zygrot 23, in the South American country of Santa Flan. Joined by his horn dog buddy Ernie (Michael Stoyanov) and perky environmentalist Julie (Megan Ward), the trio happen upon a freak show only to become part of the act thanks to the handiwork of evil Elijah C. Skuggs (Randy Quaid), a crazed ringmaster who creates new freaks using--what else--Zygrot 23.

And that's just the first act of the film! If you're at all familiar with Winter and Stern's earlier short films (SQUEAL OF DEATH), then you may have an inkling as to what a treat FREAKED is. The humor is extremely twisted and the sight gags and jokes just keep coming. Once transformed into freaks, Ricky, Ernie, and Julie befriend a cast of characters that include psychic trolls, Rastafarian eyeballs with legs, down-trodden wrenches, a giant worm, a woman played by Mr. T (playing himself, only female), and Bobcat Goldthwaite playing a freak with the body of a man but the head of a sock-pocket. The freaks must band together to escape from Skuggs and stop the spread of Zygrot 23 before the world is overrun by more freaks. The movie boasts cameos from Keanu Reeves, Brooke Shields, Morgan Fairchild, Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haines, and Calvert DeForest (AKA Larry "Bud" Melman).

5 out of 5 stars Freakin' A+.......2006-01-17

Why do I give this movie five stars? Because it is funny. That's all. I really liked it. The story is bizarre, the writing the height of silliness, and the acting intentionally goofy. It's also got a fair amount of gross out humor, which I usually don't enjoy. But in this case I'm willing to make an exception.

There's some great extras as well, surprising for a low budget, forgotten film like this. They're not all great, but they're still included. That's pretty cool.

The favorite part for me is seeing William Sadler, Keanu Reeves, and Randy Quaid acting in this strange film. Sadler as head of the EES corporation has perhaps the greatest evil line ever uttered by a ruthless bad guy.

Freaked is sort of a cross between Mad magazine, Monty Python, and Airplane. It won't appeal to everyone, but it's still pretty damn funny after all these years. Rent it before you buy it if you want to play it safe.

2 out of 5 stars This movie is a bad as it gets.......2006-01-16

I can't believe Hollywood would make such a film as Freaked. It should be called "Boring", and a waste of time and money.

Their is no plot, and it just rambles along. The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes at least had some suspense to it. Despite the big name actors in this --it goes nowhere. If you like movies made for celebral pygmies then maybe you like Freaked.

4 out of 5 stars in a sea of cookie cutter movies, one stands out.......2005-10-12

I love this movie, the crude humor, tasteless action and complete misuse of quality actors, shows promise in hollywood. I never laughed so hard, and when i can't take it anymore, they come with that right hook that some comedy writers fear to go. Alex Winter, may have sold his soul with Keanue Reeves in Bill and Ted, but he regained it with this beautiful piece of art. I wished more Brooke Sheilds in the movie, but hey, I am gonna take it that the budget was pretty much blown on her little role. Mr. T, now there is a man who doesn't take himself to serious. All and all, one of my favorite movies.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Family Movie.......2007-04-17

We watched this as a family and we all enjoyed it! Even the youngest granddaughter who is only four was able to stay with it. I loved the dynamics of the of the developing relationships between the boys. How special to see kids showing empathy and being sympathic at such a young age. I especially enjoyed the Baptism scene in the lake and what it represented to Zachary! Overall I thought the whole movie was fun and entertaining for all!

5 out of 5 stars When Zachary Beaver Came to Town.......2007-01-22

We LOVE this movie. Don't understand why it was not a mass release. It's a great heartwarming story of how love can change a life. I wish that all kids could see this movie and learn its lesson.
The acting is great and the story wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars quite the surprise.......2006-12-06

Well I knew nothing about this movie. Turned on the TV and there it was. Was captivated by Jonathon Lipnicki. What an adorable little boy. Reminded me of a nephew of mine. The movie also had Eric Stolz in it, good as he always is. It's a cute movie about a boy who is billed as the Fattest boy in the world, that's Zachary coming into town. It's a movie with a good message about life and innocence. Give it a try, you won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars The Movie was a Treat.......2006-08-24

I'm the last person to take kindly to any overtly religious promotion or overtones. In this case, my take on the baptism deal is: it was important to the poor kid, a kid who had little to grasp except for what his mother said and that was that he'd need to be baptized to see her in heaven. Yes, I almost cringed when the kids were reading passages from the bible. But, as said, it was something important to the kid and his friends sought a solution. (This, nonetheless, did result in a reduced star in my rating.) But I didn't feel the movie was preachy or overly moralistic. Overall, it was a treat, well acted with darling kids, a message of tolerance, portrayals of unfairness in life, etc. I thought the flick was a gem.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat Entertaining.......2006-04-17

The people making this movie made a decision that it was more important to impart a moral than to be entertaining. That's unfortunate. In fact, that's my biggest complaint when it comes to "family" movies and movies aimed at kids. I think that a movie should be entertaining first and that any moral should flow naturally from the story, not be forcibly squeezed from it! That being said, this movie was for the most part pleasant and on the verge of actually being entertaining. The unnatural thing about this movie is how the characters decide that baptising Zachary Beaver is so overwhelmingly important. The whole baptism thing is sort of a non sequitur. The only saving grace here is that there was at least a small morsel of humor thrown in every now and then to keep the movie from getting disproportionally serious. In some ways this movie comes across more as a propaganda piece than as an actual attempt at honest entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing movie about amazing people.......2007-09-10

In today's Politically Correct climate it might be shocking to see that people, unlike you or me, are so much like you and me. People that today would be forced to stay at home and do nothing but collect a government check, where celebrities and made decent livings. This is an excellent documentary on the amazing world of the American Sideshow.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-05-02

I thought it was an interesting documentary, especially the interview with former performers. My only complaint that some things were way too short, I would have loved to see some more things about "Schlizie", they only mentioned "her" about a minute, which was kind of dissapointing.

4 out of 5 stars Inside the tent.......2006-01-04

A documentary that brings insight on the lives in the sideshow and the era that once existed. Very, very interesting and a chapter in American culture . . .

With interviews done of many of the original circus celebrities, the viewer get's a chance to see what life was like for people in that business. were sideshow good/bad? I don't know? That's up to you to decide. However, if you're too shy to run off with the circus and you're curious to what it would be like then watch this DVD.

Plus Jason Alexander is the narrator-if you're into Seinfield???

4 out of 5 stars Very odd, but effective documentary.......2004-12-21

I bought this DVD on a whim and I was pleasantly surprised. The documentary provides an in-depth look into the dying world of the sideshow. The best parts for me were the interviews with former sideshow performers while the worst parts were the cheesy sideshow re-enactments and transitions from topic to topic.
I was left wishing for more old footage of sideshows, but the footage they did show was amazing.
The documentary treats the performers with respect and compassion while not omitting the unusual lives they had.
The sequence of the "monkey woman" and her romance with the "lizard man" was surprisingly moving and should bring many people to tears.
If anything, this documentary brought a new awareness to me regarding people born with unusual physical deformities.

No ordinary cult film, Night Tide covers a variety of different waterfronts. It's a film from the American underground, it's a horror movie, and it's an early example of independent cinema (before there was such a term). Shot in 1960, it's also a strangely haunting artifact of its time. Night Tide was written and directed by Curtis Harrington, a member of the experimental avant-garde of the '50s who went on to make the atmospheric shocker Games and many an episode of Dynasty. Mounted on the cheap, and shot on authentic locations in Santa Monica and crumbling Venice, California, Night Tide has a loose, lyrical quality not found outside Cassavetes and Godard films of the same era.

Dennis Hopper, whose youthful looks and Method style were still intact at this point, plays an innocent sailor at liberty in a coastal town; he falls for a girl who plays a mermaid at the sideshow. Or is she really a mermaid? Inspired by Val Lewton's horror classic Cat People, Harrington cooks up a supernatural stew with the suggestion that the willowy lass is one of the "Sea People," called back to her ocean home by a weird sea witch (played by a real-life occult celebrity called Cameron). Yet Night Tide only occasionally feels like a horror movie; with its naturalistic exteriors, bongos, and coffeehouse atmosphere, it's more a slice of poetic bohemia. Luana Anders, who should have had a major movie career but later became a B-movie leading lady, is wonderfully fresh as the good girl, and the music score by Hollywood pro David Raksin (Laura) is inventive and offbeat. Shown at the Venice Film Festival in 1961, the film did not secure a U.S. release until 1963, when its New-Wave-ish style probably looked less innovative. Seen today, Night Tide is both a lovely mood piece and a look back at a peculiar moment in American moviemaking, and either way a bit of low-cost enchantment. --Robert Horton

    Description

A lonely sailor, Johnny Drake (Dennis Hopper), meets the beautiful, mysterious Mora (Linda Lawson) who performs as a mermaid on the Santa Monica Pier. After they become lovers, Johnny discovers that Mora's past two boyfriends inexplicably disappeared. As his suspicions grow, Mora's doomed and sinister past is slowly revealed. In his first leading role, Hopper is captivating as the naive and eager Johnny. Like Val Lewton's "The Cat People," Curtis Harrington's "Night Tide" is hypnotic and eerie, macabre and haunting.

4 out of 5 stars Dennis Hopper falls for a sexy mermaid!.......2005-01-06

This underated cult classic is very entertaining, especially considering the fact it was made on a shoe-string budget. That just goes to show that you can make a great movie with little money! If you're considering buying this on dvd, then the Image Entertainment edition is the one you should get.

A very young Dennis Hopper stars as a sailor on leave in California who meets a beautiful young woman who works as a mermaid in the seafront carnival. He knows nothing about her but quickly falls for her (can't blame him for that!). Over time, however, he notices she's got a dark, mysterious side to her that she's hiding.

Hopper confronts the woman's guardian (a step-father, sort of) and tries to learn more, but he's told that she is a real mermaid who's already lured two former boyfriends to their deaths. Only too late does Hopper doscover the truth, but I won't give away the ending.

With memorable music by the legendary composer David Raksin and an independantly-filmed movie script that actually works, this is a movie that will entertain fans of suspenseful classics and especially fans of Dennis Hopper. The picture and sound quality of this dvd are surprisingly good for an independant movie this old. Highly recommended!

A haunting, mysterious and magical movie. Marjorie Cameron adds an element of real life magic. Kenneth Anger also had done this when he used her in `The Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954)'. Marjorie Easton also adds to the spell, and Dennis Hopper is wonderful. The carnival is the perfect background for a a plot about fantasy and reality. Filmed at the Santa Monica Pier, Venice and Ocean Park, California, where Anton LaVey played organ at strip joints in the late 1940's. The name Mora is found in many parts of the world as the death aspect of the `Triple Goddess', or Night Mare, or female vampire.

    3 out of 5 stars Beware the Siren's Song........2004-11-24

NIGHT TIDE stars a very young and quite handsome Dennis Hopper as Johnny Drake, a sailor on leave visiting a California beach somewhere not too far from Hollywood. The movie begins when a horny Johnny Drake enters the Blue Grotto looking for someone to share his mojo with. Unfortunately, most of the women in the jazz night club already have partners or don't even acknowledge Johnny's existence. Then, across the crowded room, Johnny catches the eye of a beautiful brunette sitting across the way. He approaches and though she pushes him off, the romantic sparks start to fly. He learns that her name is Mora. Then some strange woman shows up mumbling some wierd words to the girl. Whatever the old lady said makes the girl get up in a hurry. Johnny follows and catches up with her. The persistent little devil walks with her to her apartment and gets her to invite him to breakfast the next day. The relationship begins. Things don't get very far before Johnny learns from the people who run the carousel below Mora's apartment that her last two boyfriends disappeared and have never been seen. Mora also works as a mermaid at the local side show run by her former guardian. The job pays pretty well, but Mora actually believes that she is a mermaid allowed to live on land and that when the moon gets full the sea beckons her back home. By this time Johnny is madly in love with the girl and doesn't know what to do. A full moon is approaching and Mora acts more strange all the time. A fateful diving expedition ends up revealing the truth.

NIGHT TIDE was filmed on a budget of less than $76,000. It was the film that gave Dennis Hopper his first major break. The title of the movie is based upon a poem by Edgar Allen Poe and the film has gained a cult following over the years. The movie reminded me of watching an episode from ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS. With a mood such as that, it's easy to understand the cult following. Nevertheless, though I was impressed at how well the film was made on such a small budget, I found the picture to just be an average movie. Nothing more and nothing less.

5 out of 5 stars Essential viewing for cult movie fans.......2003-09-01

I adore this little film . It was obviously made on a shoe string but it offers more entertainment value than many big budget blockbusters. All the players do a grand job and they've all got interesting characters to work with . The two standouts for me , however , are the woman who plays the fortune teller (haven't got her name on me right now) and Gavin Muir as Captain Samuel Murdock. The fact that much of the action takes place at the Santa Monica pier amusement park adds to the film's surrealistic air of fantasy. If you're looking for an excellent , low budget early 60's movie that's really well crafted stick this one in your trolley and proceed straight to the check out. If you like "Carnival of Souls" you'll like "Night Tide". It certainy goes into my basket of "Desert Island" videos. Essential viewing for cult movie fans.

2 out of 5 stars A suggestion for those responsible for this bomb.......2007-04-25

If you are going to make a horror movie, here is an idea. How about a monster? Wouldn't that be something? Yes Dennis Hopper is in this and it is probably the only reason anyone would watch this. For those who like old horror movies with hoaky monsters, all you get out of this is a giant rubber octopus that comes in a dream.

Dennis Hopper is a sailer in the Navy spending some time on the Santa Monica boardwalk. He meets and pursues a beautiful woman named Mora. Turns out she works with her guardian in a boardwalk sideshow as a mermaid.

There is a lot in this movie that has nothing or little to do with the plot. If I wanted to see a lonely military service member spending time on leave doing nothing interesting at all, I would just videotape myself.

Dennis is warned that his life is in danger when the full moon arrives. Mora has already had two boyfriends die in mysterious drowning accidents. He pays no attention to his tarot card reading and decides to go scuba diving with Mora. This is where I get lost.

They dive together and Mora takes Dennis' knife and cuts his air hose. He makes it back to the service. Then he sits on the dingy for hours, Mora never comes back up. Then he spends the night by himself in a hotel.

OK, then he goes back to the boardwalk to see Mora as the mermaid. HE goes in to see her and SHE'S dead! How did this happen. Then her guardian the drunk old retired Royal Navy Captain pulls a gun on him.

At the police station the old man admits that Mora was just an ordinary girl and it was he himself that had been killing boyfriends. So the monster in this movie is an old drunk pervert.

I would not watch this again. There is enough pain in my life.

    4 out of 5 stars Fish Tale..........2005-08-25

Johnny Drake (Dennis Hopper) is a lonely sailor on liberty. He wanders the santa monica boardwalk, looking for entertainment. After stopping into the Blue Grotto lounge for a beer and some jazz, Johnny is instantly smitten by a beautiful girl named Mora (Linda Lawson), who is also sitting alone. A strange old woman comes in and speaks to Mora, causing her to leave in a hurry. Johnny follows her, drawn to her. This begins an odd relationship between the young sailor and the mysterious Mora. Soon, Johnny finds out that Mora is a mermaid in a sideshow. Her boss, captain Sam Murdock (Gavin Muir) tells Johnny an unbelievable story about Mora, a tale of ancient myths and their basis in facts. He tells Johnny that Mora is an actual siren! A mermaid! Murdock warns him that she could even be dangerous. Also, Johnny is told by a local gal named Ella (Luana "Dementia 13" Anders) that Mora's last two boyfriends met with untimely deaths! If that's not enough, a tarot-card reader (Marjorie Eaton) shows Johnny a perplexing future! Does Johnny heed any of these warnings / signs? Nah, he's in love! He stays with Mora to the end, and what an end it is! I like this movie. It keeps Mora's true identity / species a secret. I'm still not sure if she's human! Check it out...

5 out of 5 stars Dennis Hopper meets a mysterious woman with long black hair........2003-10-01

This is one of those little-known films I watched during late night television in the 1980's. I was so intrigued, I never forgot it. Now I finally own the DVD copy of it. This film is interesting to watch and really has that weird 1960's feel to it. Set during the month of August. This film offers the most relaxed performance I've ever seen Dennis Hopper play in any film and he was the age of 24 at the time. This isn't your normal beach movie and it's in black & white. Dennis Hopper plays a sailor on shore leave. He roams around Santa Monica pier and comes across the Blue Grotto, a nice jazz place. There he meets a woman with long black hair, "Mora" (Linda Lawson). A mysterious old woman comes out and tells "Mora" she must leave quickly. John the sailor is so drawn to her that he follows her into the night on the beach. She lives in a apartment above the Merry Go-Round. The sailor asks her to see her again tomorrow for breakfast. A friendship begins. Mora's job is a pier attraction. She is the mermaid. But there is another side of Mora so mysterious that Johnny doesn't know. Memorable good scenes are those when Johnny follows the old women to Venice and who can forget Marjorie Eaton as the Fortune Teller. Also in the cast is Luana Anders, Tom Dillon and Gavin Muir.
Linda Lawson appeared in "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" tv series, episode: "I Can Take Care Of Myself", May 15, 1960.
Most recently, Linda Lawson appeared in the "ER" tv series, episode "You Are Here", May 5, 2005.
Some of the locations in this film can also be seen in The NBC Mystery Movie: Columbo--Make Me A Perfect Murder (1978-TV).

    3 out of 5 stars Noir Tide.......2003-08-04

This otherwise typical low-budgeter probably has its fans for two reasons. One, obviously, is the intriguing presence of young Dennis Hopper. The other--maybe not so obviously--is that the feature is a not-bad little noir, replete with brooding atmosphere, smokey chiaroscuro, and an everyman enthralled with an exotic, enigmatic woman. The movie's main problem is poor pacing, exacerbated by a tinny, monotonous score. There are also plot lapses that have nothing to do with the leading lady's origins. Though reminiscent of Cat People, the film merely flirts with horror, though it smacks enough of the supernatural to pose lingering, disquieting questions. Is she or isn't she--the ultimate femme fatale--a Siren....
