Dead Aim: House of the Dead 2 (Michael Hurst, 2005)

Uwe Boll did not direct House of the Dead 2. Thus, almost by default, the sequel had to be better than the original. However, they installed Michael Hurst, of Room 6 fame. You get what you pay for, I guess.

Hurst (who, along with directing these two dogs, also wrote the screenplays for Edward Gorsuch's The Butcher and the funniest Sci-Fi Original Movie of all time, Mansquito) makes a movie that's less a sequel to Uwe Boll's crapfest than a totally unrelated zombie movie, and that, I have to say, was a really good decision. In this flick, a virus strikes a university, turning some of its denizens into flesh-crazed zombies. (Note: Mike, you could have done a lot with the idea of fraternity house zombies. Just sayin'.) Enter AMS, a government agency not much liked by anyone, and a bunch of soldiers. Yes, you're thinking what I'm thinking, aren't you? I kept waiting for one of the soldiers to ask if they were going on another bug hunt. The twist here is that AMS believes it can develop a vaccine if they can get blood from the first zombie, so the team has to find that first zombie.

The requisite yumness is provided by horror veteran Emmanuelle Vaugier and My Name Is Earl beauty Nadine Velasquez, and the requisite cameo is provided by Sid Haig, and other than that, honestly, there's nothing much more to say. It's typical, standard fare that doesn't stand out in any way. If you're looking for a way to kill an hour and a half, this will do the trick better than some and worse than many. * ½

5 out of 5 stars move over resident evil.......2007-05-07

For those of you that grew up watching the classic zoombie movies such as night of the living dead this movie is for you. A millitary team must neutralize a school zone and collect a blood sample from a Zombie after and outbreak. This the second movie in the house of the dead series. If you like this I also recommend the Resenent evil movie. This movie should be fine for kids ages 17 up do to heavy gore language and other inappropriate content. Can the millitary send these zombie back to the depths of hades find out in the thrilling conclusion.

3 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it..........2007-04-21

I don't think that it even bares mentioning that this is a step up from Uwe Boll's fantastic turd fest that was the original House of the Dead. If you're a fan of zombie movies, then this sequel is definitely up your ally, its tongue-in-cheek humor and silliness combined with a few points of genuine originality make for a fun view.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay.......2007-04-08

A professor tries to bring back the dead and accidentally creates a zombie virus that threatens the whole world. A secret government agency is sent to save the day. The zombies were okay, but the dialoque at times was ridiculous. All the male characters acted the same, and were hard to tell apart. It's really a 1 star movie, I only gave it 3 stars because I think Emauelle Vagier is a beautiful woman with a distinct gravely voice and she could be a big star if she got better parts. Still, if you are a zombie fan check this movie out on a slow night.

3 out of 5 stars IMPROVEMENT OVER THE FIRST, ONLY JUST.......2007-03-07

Im a huge fan of zombie movies, but I have a few criticisms of the two House of the Dead movies.

I dont know where they were going with the first movie because they just rushed it. There's no connection whatsoever between the movie and the three House of the Dead video games, maybe that wasnt their intention so I really didnt like the first one.

The second one also had no association with the video games but the style of the movie did resemble what we play in the arcades. There were a number of flaws in the movie but the biggest one that I thought was ridiculous was if humans are vunerable to infection by a zombie through bite or scratch, what about contact to zombie blood. I do give points for the gore, but when they're covered in zombie blood wouldnt they eventually become infected anyway?. Just doesnt make sense.

DO NOT BUY THIS DVD - DO NOT RENT THIS DVD. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DAY OF THE DEAD (MY FAVORITE IN THE QUADRILOGY OF THE DEAD FROM GEORGE ROMERO)

2 out of 5 stars Sad To Say........I should listen.......2007-06-13

Since I am a huge zombie/horror fan,I read the reviews for Day Of The Dead 2 and how bad the film was, I decided to take a chance on it...and there were some good parts that I thought was good...but when the zombies started to talk.....that pretty much blew it for me. I was dissapointed..maybe sometimes u shoul listen to the majority of the people!!

3 out of 5 stars oh god I don't even know.......2007-05-30

I really don't know how to describe this film. My friends and I had to actually stop it halfway through and finish it later because the first 45 minutes or so are

SO

EXCRUCIATINGLY

BORING.

There are several scenes that are like, five minutes of people lying in bed coughing, as in: Shot of character lying in bed coughing. Cut to next character lying in bed coughing. Cut to next character lying in b HEY DO YOU THINK MAYBE THEY ARE GETTING SICK? WHAT NO THAT'S CRAZY TALK

I won't even get into the special effects (and believe me, they ARE special) but I will say this: remember in grade school, when you would put a thin layer of Elmer's glue on the back of your hand and peel it off because school makes you bored enough to do things like that? Well, say hello to what I'd wager is the most believable effect in this whole sad pile of dorkiness.

I loved the original Day of the Dead so much (yeah, I am one of the "trolls" as Mr. Romero himself so affectionately refers to us, haha) that I feel it is my duty to publicly ridicule this turd. It's hysterical that this even has the real logo on it. Also "contagium" is a dumb word and I swear the case the rental DVD came in smells like feet.

This is the true meaning of suffering. This is pain, distilled into its purest form. The disc? That's not plastic. Each "DVD" consists of approximately one thousand tormented souls, refined, melted down to the clearest of plastic-like materials and compressed into a convincingly disc-like shape, after which it is blessed (by which I mean teabagged) thrice by Satan himself, packaged in a box made of cast brimstone, and shrinkwrapped in the specially prepared flesh of some fell beast that happens to have skin which looks exactly like shrinkwrap. Did I mention this movie is a bit bad? Because it is. Oh, it is. I hurt so much inside.

Seriously (?) though, I have to give it three stars if only for the in-jokes it has spawned, some of which make me laugh until I puke at the mere thought. I conversely feel total revulsion and some kind of terrible giddy spastic glee when I think about it. It defies description. Hell, I just described it and I still can't quite gather my senses enough to interpret what the hell I just said. Watch it in the company of friends, beer, and a couple of large pizzas and you will feel slightly less miserable about being alive. Watch it and you will laugh; however, it will be the choked and tortured laughter of a man insane. Watch it, and you will know Agony.

But you know what?

I'm going to watch it again. That's right, I am. I want to see if I really saw what I think I saw. After that I'm going to have a few shots and cry myself to sleep. Even after all this, I can't say I hate it. This movie and my feelings for it make me question the meaning of life itself. I am confused, deep in my heart. It's cold here and I am scared and alone and the dopey zombie on the cover is staring at me from across the room and ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY

2 out of 5 stars Come on, Give the guy some credit.......2007-04-06

I have to say the DVD cover lured me in. The design is great, although there are no killer scarecrows in the film, pity. I am giving the maker of this film some credit because he managed to capture autumn so well on film. The shots of the corn fields, the autumn trees, the fall wind, and the dreary skies are great. Plus, Halloween is my favorite time of the year, and he captured the mood perfectly. I would tell people who are big fans of this time of the year to at least look at it for the scenery. The 2 girls lost in the field were just terrible actors, and I agree with one reviewer who said the 'screaming into the camera' part was so annoying. Yet any film taking place during fall and Halloween in a cornfield has my attention.

1 out of 5 stars Boring. Not worth a rental. Not even worth watching for free........2006-10-29

You can read the other reviews of this film. I have nothing to add, but wanted to cast my vote for terrible. Wish I had read them before renting.

1 out of 5 stars Awful...........2006-02-24

As a owner of the first Dark Harvest film which I thought was merely a OK film, I was anxious to see Dark Harvest 2 thinking maybe it would be a better movie than the first. Wrong!!!!!!! This movie was terrible from beginning to end! A cheap attempt to make a horror movie. This movie gives you the effect that an amateur with a hand held cheap video camera walked around filming this movie. The acting was horrible and so was the plot. It made no sense at all and after 15 minutes, I was tempted to stop watching but out of curiousity, I suffered through the whole movie. You get sick of seeing this man searching for 2 girls lost in a corn maze. I'm very glad that I only rented this movie and didn't buy it. It would have been a terrible waste of money!! If you are curious about this movie, please rent it first even though the $4 to rent it is too much!!

1 out of 5 stars DON'T EVER BUY THIS MOVIE This Movie Blows I'M SERIOUS .......2006-02-09

This is the worst movie I've ever seen. It's waste of money. Trust me I have over 100 movies and this its by far the worst. I really wouldn't even give 1 star for it. Movie just doen't make sense.

1 out of 5 stars This movie made me hate corn........2006-01-14

Dear God, when will I ever learn? I love no-budget horror movies but you have to draw the line somewhere. Dark Harvest 2 is somewhere behind that line, hidden by other gems like, well, every movie ever released by The Asylum. As far as a review I can't say much that hasn't already been said. The director's attempts at "establishing" a scene are enough to make Gandhi come back to life and immediately kill himself. Here's a hint to the director -- the sound of a little girl screaming is in the Top 5 of Most Annoying Things Ever so to stick a camera on a 9-year old girl and tell her to scream for 5 minutes is a crime against nature, no matter how many camera angles you use. And how can a psychic look at a footprint in the mud and have a psychic premonition OF A FOOTPRINT IN THE MUD??!?!?! What the hell does that even mean? For the love of God, just stop it. I hope you don't get any ideas about making another movie like "Wheat: Legend of the Cereal Killer." I know that was corny but what do you expect, the ENTIRE movie takes place in a freakin' cornfield.

The sequel to Meat Market 1!! More than a year after the events of Meat Market, the few survivors, Argenta, Nemesis, and others struggle for survival against the undead in the ruins of what was once society. In their search for a safe haven they come across what appears to be the last refuge of humanity - a fortified com-pound run by former motivational speaker Bill Wilhelm, and his cult of heavily armed fanatics. But when Argenta is subjected to indoctrination techniques and her comrades imprisoned, she begins to suspect that deep within the compound, more is going on than a simple attempt to 'rebuild' . . . that Bill and his followers have more than one use for the living and the undead alike.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't be deceived!.......2004-03-15

This was the most dissapointing horror film I have ever seen. The acting is HORRIBLE, I don't think most are even real actors, probably just friends of the movie maker. The camera is extremely horrible, it literally looks like a film students work, the camera is just way too plain like one you can go buy at the store, for those reasons alone DO NOT BUY THIS FILM!!! Some of the zombies look good, well their faces at least. They don't have raggy clothing like they should, it's stupid when they are wearing perfectly clean clothes with faces full of blood, it doesn't make sense. There's abit of blood, and a few scenes with gore but the way it was done was as bad as the acting. There is only one scene where you actually see violence in action without having to move the camera away, the rest of it is just blood squirting on the walls that doesn't even look like blood. If the camera was professional it might have been fun to watch, but it was done with a home recorded so it's not worth it at all. Not to mention that the girls in this movie are UGLY!!! There is no excuse for the showering scenes, come on they do closeups on a naked girl that is probably around 290 pounds!! That was sicker than the zombies! Just avoid this movie at all costs, it is just horrible, the only thing good about it is the relief you feel when you watch other movies, it makes you appreciate good movies!

4 out of 5 stars Who is eating who, really?.......2004-02-11

The sequel to any horror movie usually lacks something of the original, but this one proves worthy. We're not only blessed with zombie action: lots of head-splitting and cheesy spurting noises, but humans eating organs! Finally, a new spin on the zombie genre. The story of the survivors from the first movie facing out with a tyrannical corporation trying to rebuild a zombified world also held my attention well. For the budget of $5,000 dollars, it's a damn good movie.

This is a worty movie despite its apparant technical flaws. Any zombie fan will drool for more.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as the first but good enough.......2003-09-06

The movie continues a year later after the MM1 to where the same army chick, one of the lesbian vampires and a dude with a patch on his eye go around in the zombie infested city. They end up getting captured by some dorky-looking chick and taken to a base where the military kill diseased people, experiment on the disabled, and sign up who ever isn't diseased of disabled. Then there's a autopsy guy who does human inerds and skulls. Then the hot chick investigates the whole thing. Then it progresses on until zombies within the base break free and kill off all the soldiers. Then the lesbian vampire and the hot chick escape with the help of the ghost of the Mexican Wrestler.

A DECENT SEQUEL! NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST! I thought they weren't even trying in this one and didn't even try at all to make a good sequel (hence Hollywood and their sequels) but it's good enough I suppose. The only flaw this movie suffered was the return of that Mexican wrestler. THAT WAS STUPID! Other than that, wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars "15 Frightful Horror Films ... Bela Lugosi ... Passport Video".......2006-10-16

Passport Video presents "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Béla Lugosi was the stage name of actor Béla Ferenc Dezs Blaskó (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956) --- Lugosi was born in Lugos, Hungary, at the time part of Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), the youngest of four children of a baker --- best known for his portrayal of "Dracula" in the American Broadway stage production, and subsequent film, of Bram Stoker's classic vampire story.

Late in his life, he again received star billing in movies when filmmaker Edward D. Wood, Jr., a fan of Lugosi, found him living in obscurity and near-poverty and offered him roles in his films, such as "GLEN OR GLENDA?" (1953) (in which his role made no more sense than the rest of the movie) and as a Dr. Frankenstein-like mad scientist in "BRIDE OF THE MONSTER" (1955), during post-production of the latter, Lugosi entered treatment for his addiction, and the premier of the film was ostensibly intended to help pay for his treatment expenses. The extras on an early DVD release of "PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE" (1959) include an impromptu interview with Lugosi upon his exit from the treatment center, which provide some rare personal insights into the man --- this was one of Lugosi's most infamous roles was released after he was dead. Ed Wood (Director) features footage of Lugosi interspersed with a double --- Wood had taken a few minutes of silent footage of Lugosi, in his Dracula cape, for a planned vampire picture but was unable to find financing for the project --- Wood later conceived of Plan 9, Wood wrote the script to incorporate the Lugosi footage and hired his wife's chiropractor to double for Lugosi in additional shots --- notice however the "double" is thinner than Lugosi, and covers the lower half of his face with his cape in every shot --- Leonard Maltin (Famous Film Critic) was quoted - "Lugosi died during production, and it shows."

Lugosi died of a heart attack on August 16, 1956 while lying in bed in his Los Angeles home. He was 73 --- Bela Lugosi was buried wearing one of the many capes from the Dracula stageplay, as per the request of his son and fifth wife, in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California --- Contrary to popular belief, Lugosi never requested to be buried in his famous cloak; Bela Lugosi, Jr. has confirmed on numerous occasions that he and his mother, Lillian, arrived at their decision independently.

5 out of 5 stars Three cheers - Dr Syn on DVD.......2007-06-30

I'm giving 5 out of 5 just because Dr Syn is one of my favourites and it needed to be on DVD.
And if any of you wonder what is the rather haunting hymn being played and sung in that early scene in the village church, its "We've no abiding city here" by the famous Irish hymn writer Thomas Kelly, to George Frederick Handel's tune "Cannons" (named not after guns but after the palatial home of Handel's patron, the Duke of Chandos).
Buy the DVD for Dr Syn, even if you don't want to watch the two other movies.

      3 out of 5 stars Dr. Syn??.......2003-07-06

This triple feature is so-so. I enjoyed "Dr. Syn", but failed to find any horror in it whatsoever. I recommend it as a good old movie, but not as a scary one. I have no idea why it is included in this collection. As for "King Of The Zombies", well, let's just say it's pretty weak. It has it's humorous moments, both intentional and unintentional, but fails to give even one good shudder. The "zombies" are about as frightening as those in a Scooby Doo cartoon. Their "King" is not very menacing either. "The Vampire Bat" is the real deal. Dwight Frye is his old weird self and Faye Wray is great. Lionel Atwill is quite sinister. I recommend one movie out of the three...

1 out of 5 stars Poor Print Quality.......2003-02-14

Having been a fan of all things Dr Syn since my teens (30 years plus) and having the video of this film I was pleased to see it's appearance on DVD.
However I have to express my disappointment at the quality of the print used for this edition. It is very grainy and full of "scratch marks" from the portion I have so far watched.
My video print of this film is far superior and I am now hoping for a UK release (where I am based) of this taken from the print used for the video.
The film is still an enjoyable romp through the Dymchurch Marshes and anything that promotes DR Syn should be encouraged.
Here's waiting for Disney to release their version "The Scarecrow" on DVD.

2 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for.......2002-08-19

The first film, Dr. Syn, is a fun, old-style, British mystery set in Kent in 1800. A good film, but, a less than perfect print. The transfer is a touch misframed and there are scratches throughout. On the plus side, the dialogue is always understandable and the film appears complete. The second feature, The Vampire Bat, is a good example of a 1930's American "B" picture. An OK film, but, again, the print is in bad shape. At least the framing appears correct and the sound adequate. However, there also looks to be a ten minute chunk missing from the film's middle. While it doesn't render the story incomprehensible it doesn't help either. The final movie, ironically, is the weakest of the group in terms of story, but, the print is in by far the best shape. The contrast is good; the framing appears complete and the film isn't missing any footage. However, the zombie on a Caribbean island story is very dated. Also, I think the picture's racist elements appeared a bit over-the-top even during its initial release in 1941. If you find racial stereotypes offensive avoid this film. I guarantee it will never play again on television. All in all, good value for the money if you accept the limitations of the source material. This isn't The Criterion Collection.
