So, they let both Rex Harrison and Anthony Newley sing. This 1968 family musical is classier than the 1998 Eddie Murphy remake, with all of its scatological humor. This won a couple of Oscars (Best Song, Best Effects) and was nominated for seven more, including Best Picture. At the time of release, however, this was a box-office dud. Based (in part) on the magical Hugh Lofting book, it begins in Puddleby-by-the-Marsh, England, from which the world-renowned veterinarian Dolittle (Harrison) begins his quest for a giant pink sea snail. Children should find this enjoyable for its exotic creatures, such as the Pushme-Pullyou. Most adults may not agree as readily, although some of us consider this a guilty pleasure. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars if i could talk to the animals! .......2007-05-21

this movie was one of my favorite movies when i was growing up, its much better than the newest dr doolittle. this is a great childrens movie! i love it.

1 out of 5 stars not happy.......2007-03-14

I have recieved the dvd and couldnt play it as it was on a usa tracking system so it cannt be played in great britain i think it would be worth mentioning this when selling these kind of products. I also didnt receive a return mailing address or i would have returned it

4 out of 5 stars Too many songs........2007-03-03

The film will be good for kids. too many songs for my liking. i had to keep forwarding the songs. do not expect much spectacular special effects. acting of rex harrison was the only thing that will stand out.

2 out of 5 stars Lost story........2007-01-21

I had forgotten how boring Rex Harrison was. It didn't take long to remember why I didn't remember much about this movie. Harrison's performance demonstrates how muddled and off key the "songs" are and the miscasting of the actors. This is a movie for the under 6 year olds. The remake with Eddie Murphy is so much better being a comedy and no musical numbers.

5 out of 5 stars It's Still Great!.......2007-01-19

After searching many different places, I finally found the original "Dr. Dolittle" here at Amazon. I was very pleased with the quick service and the DVD arrived in perfect shape. The quality of the movie was superb and my grandchildren and I all loved watching it.

There's something intrinsically funny about tactlessly truth-telling talking animals. And there are plenty of those--and laughs to go with them--in this 1998 reimagining of Hugh Lofting's children's story. Murphy plays the doctor in question, a modern-day San Francisco physician who discovers that he can understand what animals have to say. Director Betty Thomas makes the most of an amazing voice cast for the animals, led by Norm McDonald and including everyone from Garry Shandling to Julie Kavner to Albert Brooks. The story itself is pretty slim--will the conscientious doctor sign his soul away to a greedy HMO?--but Murphy makes the most of it, often providing priceless reactions to animal voices only he can hear. --Marshall Fine

Description

A successful physician and devoted family man, John Dolittle (Murphy) seems to have the world by the tail, until a long-suppresses talent possessed as a child - the ability to communicate with animals- is suddenly reawakened with a vengeance! Now every creature within squawking distance wants the good doctor's advice, unleashing an outrageous chain of events that turn his world upside down!

Featuring an all-star menagerie of voice talent (including Chris Rock, John Leguizamo, Norm MacDonald, Albert Brooks, Gary Shandling and Ellen DeGeneres), this wild and woolly free-for-all is your prescription for hilarious hijinks and "mischievous fun!" (The New York Times)

5 out of 5 stars no barks or meows in this film.......2007-07-10

Dr. Dolittle is perhaps one of the funniest Eddie Murphy films around. Let's be honest- those of you who own dogs and cats, you've probably wondered what it would be like if they could communicate with you. Obviously they can't talk to you, but animals can feel so HUMAN sometimes, that sometimes you believe you can actually understand what they want and need. That's what makes this movie so funny. A variety of famous comedians do the voice overs for many of the animals in the film, and most of the time the movie maintains a humorous pace. I was laughing on several occasions, especially with the dog that Eddie accidentally hit with his car that triggered the whole "He can talk to animals" storyline (again).

The pigeons were also funny, who were communicating with each other like real husbands and wives who don't get along, and they actually went to Eddie Murphy for some kind of marriage counseling-type thing (I kid you not!) I also enjoyed the tree owl who had a stick stuck to his wings, and the drunk monkey. I think my favorite scene in the film was when word got around throughout the animal kingdom that Eddie could understand and help animals, and so Eddie opened the door to a variety of different animals storming into his place, demanding help since Eddie was the famous animal doctor. It's really a strange movie, but I had a good time laughing and enjoyed just about everything.

As you can probably guess, Eddie Murphy was the only person who could understand the animals, so whenever an animal talked to him and he talked back, the people around him were looking at him like he was crazy! That's another thing that made the movie so funny. A solid film that's funny from beginning to end.

1 out of 5 stars Read the book instead.......2007-01-11

Just a note to those who were uncomfortable watching this film with their children; movies have ratings for a reason. This movie is rated PG-13, which tells you up front that it has content that is considered inappropriate for children. In this case, it is crude humor.
What I don't understand is why they made a movie with a story line aimed at a young audience, and then inclduded content that earned it a rating that recommends that a young audience shouldn't see it.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't go wrong with Doolittle.......2006-07-13

This is such a hysterical movie... my husband and I love it... we had to buy it. Its a "must" in the house.

5 out of 5 stars Eddie Murphy makes it work: animal lovers will love this.......2006-01-20

Set in San Francisco and not England, the American Dr. Dolittle is just as comical as the original British vetrinarian in the 1960's muscial. When Dr. Dolittle's animal telepathic skills resurface he not only is sent to a mental institution but he ends up having to save a circus tiger's life. This California rendition complete with scenic shots of the Bay Area, is a departure from the children's books, but succeeds in its key message: either be yourself or nothing at all even if the mass population thinks you're crazy. Not being true to yourself is the direct route to driving you truly crazy.

It's only a marginal improvement, but Dr. Dolittle 2 defies the odds by rising above its popular 1998 predecessor (and once again, let's not confuse these movies with the earlier Rex Harrison musical). Eddie Murphy cakewalks through his title role with the confident professionalism of a comedian who knows when to share the spotlight--especially when he's being upstaged by a bunch of animals who steal all the punch lines. And once again the movie's aimed at a preteen audience, so many of those punch lines involve flatulence, bodily functions, and frequent use of the word butt.

The difference this time: Dr. Dolittle has settled into his talk-to-the-animals routine; his 16-year-old daughter (Raven-Symone) is getting to be a feisty handful (it turns out she's coping with a hereditary gift); and his lawyer wife (Kristen Wilson) is representing him in a trial against corporate villains who want to clear-cut a local forest. Naturally, the local critter mafia (their Don is a beaver... fugeddaboutit!) want Dolittle to fight for their cause, and this involves the successful mating of an endangered bear and a domesticated circus bear who's forgotten all the bear necessities of life in the wild. The bears are voiced by Lisa Kudrow and Steve Zahn, and they almost steal the show, but the whole menagerie (with digitally animated "talking") is equally amusing. Adults might wish that the filmmakers had tried harder to make a truly memorable sequel, but this is a movie for kids, and they're going to love it without quibbling. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Superstar Eddie Murphy is back as Dolittle, the beloved doctor with the up-ROAR-ious critter-communicating talents. This time around Dolittle plays Cupid to bumbling circus bear to help a group of forest creatures save their habitat. 5 out of 5 stars Doolittle does it again!.......2006-07-13

We loved the first movie, so when the 2nd came out, it had a lot to live up to. It was as hysterical as the first... very well done! A "must" have!!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the original! Eddie Murphey at his best!.......2006-05-05

Eddie Murphey is truly the doctor, the doctor of comedy that is! This is the series to see if you need to laugh, if you love to laugh even! I was watching these because I like Raven-Symone (she plays one of his daughters). Raven-Symone is from Disney Channel's "That's So Raven". Also, the animal voices, many of them are very familiar (like Chris Rock and Cedric the Entertainer). If you like one and two, then you might want to check out "Dr. Doolittle 3". No, it does not feature Eddie Murphey unfortunately. However, this movie is the doctor for your comedy ills!

3 out of 5 stars Dr. Dolittle 2.......2005-11-02

The movie "Dr.Dolitle" was a movie directed by Steve Carr which both childen and adults will like it.It was a very interesting movie because a doctor call Dolittle was able to communicate with animals.
Dr.Dolittle had to make a type of endangered bear to give birth in order to save the forest where many types of species of animalss lived in. But at first, the male bear was anti-social not romantic and do not know how to survive in the wild, it was very playful and likes to sing songs which sounded terrible. So it was long before they began to fall for each other, as the female bear was actually attached.
The movie was very funny when the male bear was climbing on a broken tree branch, which had a bee hive. He just wanted to fulfil the female bear's wish in being a courageous bear. Dr. Dolittle advised him not to climb.Andwhen the bear reached the top,the bees in the hive stinged them.
Overall, I would give the movie 3 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Cute! Very Cute!.......2005-03-21

I suppose this was not as entertaining as the first Dr.Dolittle but we certainly enjoyed it. Haven't you ever wondered what animals would say if they could talk? It's always fun to imagine that and as with the first you get to hear them.
It's funny and I liked the bears; I thought they were adorable.
The acting was good, as was the storyline and bringing in some human interest, such as problems with the doctors daughter was great. All in all we enjoyed this movie and think you will as well.

1 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing.......2005-02-20

I love Eddie Murphy, and I loved Dr. Doolittle! The previews of Dr. D II looked so funny, I couldn't wait to see it. Well, I just saw it, and my mind has still not recovered.

Dr. Doolittle 2 is one of the worst films I have ever seen. The story and dialouge are so mind-numbing, even the animated Murphy and Raven Symone, who plays his teenage daughter, couldn't salvage it. The story revolves around Dr. Doolittle trying to save the patch of forest behind his house from a land-hungry developer. To do this, Doolittle must rehab a tame bear and make him wild, because this bear is an endangered species, and if he lives in the forest, the developer can't touch it. Sounds kind of cute . . . it's not.

The bear acts and sounds like a washed up Vegas lounge singer. His whiny voice (Steve Zahn) is so annoying that even I, a passionate animal lover, could not summon a shred of sympathy for this bear. And talk about long. This whole thin storyline is dragged out for ninety minutes until I writhed in pain. And the other animals! A sad, alcoholic French monkey, a chamelon with a horrible Mexican accent, and an abusive bear and his passive female bear. When the bear is not whining, a dog is narrating the whole film in another nasal, bland voice with HORRIBLE dialouge.

A subplot involves his daughter rebelling and liking a boyfriend who is a complete idiot, is dropped off by a pizza delivery car and asks to stay two nights. Murphy actually acquieses. What an intelligent, lovely girl like Raven would see in this sorry homie is completely unbelievable.

It is hard to believe people (and animals) are going hungry when millions were wasted on this fart of a film. It seemed like the voice actors were embarrased to be saying such stupid dialouge, and that the animal actors were embarrased to be acting such stupid roles - and I don't blame them.

Maya Dolittle (Kyla Pratt, One on One) takes center stage in this tweener-oriented sequel to the fur-friendly entertainments. While Eddie Murphy and much of the original gang have moved on, his on-screen daughter talks to the animals and works at a veterinarian clinic--just like dear old dad--when not attending school. Naturally, the animals talk back, like the family pooch and a mischievous monkey--who tends to materialize at the most inopportune times--from the first installments. So some things haven't changed. On the other hand, the 17-year-old's primary concerns are popularity, putting together the perfect look, and bagging a boyfriend. It won't be easy. The other kids think she's a freak because of that animal thing, and the chatty creatures keep getting her in trouble with her parents. Her mom, Lisa (Kristen Wilson, who returns to the fold), sends Maya to a dude ranch to straighten her out, but the animals won't leave the "weirdo" alone. (The ranch is run by John Amos of Good Times fame.) Eventually she finds a way to put her Dolittle skill to good use and returns home a heroine. Fast-paced, if forgettable, this straight-to-DVD movie is manufactured to appeal more to the That's So Raven and Lizzy McGuire set than to fans of the original duo (let alone the British musical with Rex Harrison). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

2 out of 5 stars Pretty awful.......2007-06-27

So often a series sits on its laurels and continues to crank out episodes and the audience continues to see them because they are not terrible. Then, inevitably, the makers vomit something out with the same name, it's atrocious, and they take the viewers' money on the half effort and that's the end of it. Doctor Dolittle 3 is therefore the end.

There was no point in making this. It lacks eddie murphy (they have him on the phone talking to his wife, but one cannot even hear his voice). Unlike the first two which were at least somewhat funny in a very goofy way (worth watching if you're dying to kill an evening), this was a sleep-fest--literally. About 25 min in I was in an epic battle with my eyelids, pulling out all the stops to stay awake and avoid the wrath of my wife. Alas, the eyelids won (don't they always?).

The characters on this are silly, the plot...oh, I don't know why I'll bother anymore; The movie is just bad, I'd recommend skipping it.

Along the same lines as the first two but with a twist with the eldst daughter. Comedy with a fun aspect

5 out of 5 stars its better then i was told .......2006-11-28

I like the dd3 alot i was told it wasn't good but i had to complete my collection, even though eddie murphy is not in it doesn't mean its bad or that its based on maya the youngest. I think that it gives a new twist on the movie.

2 out of 5 stars Looks More Like a Usual Teenage Comedy, and a Very Ordinary One.......2006-08-03

Yes, it is true. They made another Doctor Dolittle film without Eddie Murphy, but that is not the biggest problem about `Doctor Dolittle 3.' No, what is really annoying is the bad script of the film which does not know its target audience. I thought the greatest merit of `Doctor Dolittle' franchise is the comical interaction between a human and animals. However, the second sequel seems to have a different idea about it because the heroine of the film, the renowned Doctor's daughter Maya (Kyla Pratt, returning as the same role as she did in `DD' and `DD2') thinks that her ability of talking to an animal prevents her from being popular among the class, for it makes her look so uncool and weird.

Can you believe that? If you are a 17-year-old girl like Maya living somewhere in America, and you can truly understand what the animals are speaking, you WOULD be popular. But Maya, who is desperate to fit in, would not see things that way. Instead, I don't know why, but Maya's worried mom (Kristen Wilson, also doing the same role in `DD' and its sequel) thinks of sending her off to a cowboy camp, where Maya meets a group of kids, mostly stock characters from another teenage comedies.

In fact `DD3' looks like a usual Hollywood coming-of-age comedy, and some set-pieces involving Kyla Pratt's character may remind you of the episodes from, say, `Lizzie McGuire.' You know the typical plot elements such as the rivalry with another female, meeting a hunky boy, and a brief musical sequence, etc., and all these things are done in a most familiar way. Plus, you can enjoy some fart jokes, slapsticks (like throwing eggs), and, yes, don't forget talking animals. But if the animals are not the center of the film's story, what is the point of making another Doctor Dolittle film?

To her credit, Kyla Pratt does her best, but even her likable personality and natural charms cannot hide the weak script and the lack of originality. Twenty Century Fox, it is true, has polished up everything in the film, so the images are clear, the production designs are decent, and those animals act and speak naturally, but if you demand something more from the film, you will be hugely disappointed with it.

      3 out of 5 stars LIKE FATHER...LIKE DAUGHTER..........2006-10-26

This is a moderately entertaining film that is fun for the whole family. It features Eddie Murphy as Dr. Dolittle, reprising his original role. This time Dr. Doolittle displays an interest in environmental issues, as he tries to save the forest by playing matchmaker between Ava, a bear in the wild, and Archie, a circus bear who has gotten soft and is trying to get used to living in the wild. Ultimately, Dr. Dolittle is victorious over the corporate expansionists who sought to decimate the forest.

There are some very amusing moments with the animals. There are also some funny moments as Dr. Dolittle tries to cope with his sixteen year old daughter just being a teenager. Much to his delight and surprise, however, it turns out that she appears to have inherited his unique ability to communicate with animals. Still, this film is simply not as good as the prequel.

This DVD provides picure perfect visuals, as well as excellent sound. The disc also has some nice extra features, such as a kid's guide to grizzlies and the director's commentary. This is a value packed DVD.
