I loved this DVD.......2007-07-26
I really loved this DVD. It was nice to see Fleetwood Mac in there natural state. I loved the part where Stevie brings in a Spirit Catcher. My grandmother had one of these. I also liked it when Lyndsey was trying to change one of Stevie's songs and she would not have it. Her songs are her babies. I really enjoyed watching it and I hope other's will too.
Revealing.......2007-07-07
I love Fleetwood Mac & Say You Will is one of my favorites of their recordings. I also love when artists share their process & let you in to see the decisions & details of how it all happens. Destiny Rules is a great DVD revealing this insight. I wish each scene was longer. Knowing there is 500 hours makes me want to see much more. Favorite bits: hearing Stevie's demos of her 4 new songs, watching Stevie & Lindsey come up with vocal harmonies, hearing real conversations between friends & band members with so much at stake, hearing the writers stand up for their songs & having last say on the arrangements. Non musicians think the band plays & sings the song & they're done move on to the next song. But making an album is like making a film & there are thousands of things to decide & narrowing down infinite choices is the art. (Now release the DVD version for musicians we can take it.) Fleetwood Mac Revealed.......2007-04-30
Hard to believe that the band would allow the public to have this kind of access into what goes on behind the scenes. So glad they have. After all of these years, Stevie and Lindsey get under each other's skin and have some magical musical vocal collaborations (PeaceKeeper). Sad that this dvd doesn't focus on Lindsey's songs more as they are exceptional. Instead we see the band in the studio working on Stevie's songs mostly. Stevie was right about one thing, glad it was only a single cd. It should have been a Lindsey solo project if you ask me. Stevie's best song here is "Smile at You" which she dug out of her old song bag as an answer to Lindsey's "Come" song, "Think of me sweet darling every time you don't come." Lindsey can be mean spirited for sure. Stevie responds, "My first mistake was to smile at you." She really could sing and write great stuff in her day.
A great pic for diehard fans of "The Mac" and Stevie Nicks.......2007-02-12
If you like the raw & uncut type of footage, which is so popular in this age of reality series AND you are a true, diehard lover of "The Mac," go for it. Much of "Destiny Rules" is centered around the creative differences of Stevie & Lindsey, and what they each believed "Say You Will" should be as a finished product. Stevie's side wins. She and her people know what they're doing, when it comes to selling records (amongst other things).
Though I would NEVER criticize his talent, the less pleasant side of Lindsey (after all these years!) shows through & through at times. At one point, Stevie asked the cameraman to stop filming, because of an ugly disagreement that started between the two over her songs/production. There is some neat stuff on here, though. Since Mick has been clean and sober, I've always loved to see his interviews, and hear his perspective on things.
Of course, the music is wonderful. At one point, Mick commented that he believed Stevie's material on this album was some of her "best" since the first couple of albums she was on with Fleetwood Mac. I would agree that it's some pretty excellent stuff.
A look into the making of Say You Will.......2005-08-10
Destiny Rules features some great footage of songs being worked on for the 2003 Fleetwood Mac album "Say You Will" as well as some rehearsals for their upcoming tour of that year. I could do without some of the political hoopla and needless bickering. I would have loved more musical footage and rare stuff that didn't make the album. The documentary did include a song not on the Say You Will album called "I am Waiting" which was breathtaking and should have made the cut. I enjoyed the photo shoot footage for the album cover and innersleeve, wish more of this footage had been included as well. This is a nice documentation into the world of the Mac and it is always nice to see more DVDS on my favorite band.

Better than the Prior reviewer gives it credit for..........2007-09-04
Here in the Western Hemisphere we (collectively as a people) have a mis-conception about animation. When whe hear the term 'Animation' we immediately think 'childish' or 'kids-stuff', well this simply is not the case... never has been.
YES most animation in the past 30 years has been geared towards children; but what about the great shorts that pre-ceded the cinimatic features of yesteryear? Geared towards adults. Much of the humour in old Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry cartoons is lost on the young or has been censored out.
Rock 'n' Rule is an animated movie that attempts to bridge that old schizm. No, it's not perfect... but it is damn good. The music DOES fit and it is a single coherent story.
The animation is great..........2007-04-25
I suppose that this was Canada's attempt to repeat the success of Heavy Metal. Unfortunately, Rock and Rule falls quite short of HM's status. The songs are supplied by certified geniuses, Rick Nielsen/Cheap Trick, Lou Reed, Debbie Harry and Iggy Pop, but all of these artists were at a nadir at the time of this movie. While their worst songs are still much better than most artists' best songs, those used in the movie just aren't great and they don't fit into the movie really well. It is hard to determine if the songs were meant to relay plot aspects or are merely background mood setters. The lone exception is Lou's "My Name is Mok", perhaps the highlight of the film.
Basically, Mok is a super rocker who wants to bring in a demon from another dimension but needs a voice of specific timbre to make it happen. If that sounds cheesy, you should hear the dialog. The "humor" is sophomoric and most adults will find the script asinine. After all, the characters are mutated rats, cats and dogs (though I can't tell which are which). I guess I was in a different mind frame 20 years ago when I first watch this film. That being said, fans of REAL animation will probably enjoy it. No annoying CGI here! The animation and "My Name is Mok", coupled with nostalgia, are the reasons that I can warrant the three stars. For better plot lines and music, check out HM or American Pop.

Although it featured songs by Debbie Harry, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Cheap Trick, and Earth, Wind & Fire, Rock and Rule (Canada, 1983) never received a general US release. Set in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by mutants, the underdeveloped story centers on the rock star Mok and his efforts to summon a demon from another dimension. Only the voice of aspiring singer Angel can cross the dimensional barrier and free the monster. Mok pursues Angel through series of chases and concerts that produce complications involving her true love/singing partner Omar and his band. Clive Smith's direction is simply inept: the story plods along listlessly; the characters change motivation on a dime; the crude CG special effects are squandered in minor scenes, rather than used to punch up the climax.
Rock and Rule reflects the confusion of the animation industry in the early '80s. Yellow Submarine and Fritz the Cat had proved there was an audience for hip, edgy animated features. But nobody could make a good one, and a series of bombs caused animation to be labeled box-office poison. More than 20 years later, Rock and Rule holds a curiosity value for fans of old rock, but it's not a memorable film. (Rated PG: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol, drug, and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

A Great Film! Will some of the soundtrack ever see the day of light ?!?.......2007-03-18
This is a great movie and due to copyrights on the soundtrack I assume that's why it took this film forever to come back in print on any format. The vhs/beta tapes were released shortly after the film's theatrical release and then for the next 20 plus years was not rereleased. Yet, to this day the soundtrack has never been available on record, cassette or compact disc. Sure, since then some of the tracks have seen the light of day. You can find the cheap trick songs on a box set. The Lou Reed (Mok songs) are on some odd lou reed collections. But, strangly some other great tracks to this day have never seen light anywhere. Like why has dance, dance, dance by Earth Wind and Fire is still not available. These guys only released 20 studio albums and dozens of live albums and a few best of's and some box sets yet this lost gem by Earth Wind and Fire seems to have slipped through the cracks of media format other than the actual movie formats.
Rock & Rule rules.......2007-02-06
When I saw that Cheap Trick had done songs, I knew that I couldn't go wrong by watching it. I was very surprised to find an actual moral to the story, love conquers all.
One of the most underappreciated animated films ever made.......2006-10-04
I had never heard about this movie until I saw the DVD at a local video rental. "Rock and Rule" is a Canadian animated film from the 1980's that was made by Nirvana Studios, and was almost going to be a children's film except the filmmakers took a lot of liberties with the storyline and content, turning it into a more adult film. (and by "adult" I don't mean porn, but subject matter like drugs and swearing) Because there wasn't much of a market for adult animated films back in 1980's America the film was a flop and the animation studio nearly went out of business. They were clever, though, and made money through several succesful cartoon shows. Know what cartoon shows they worked on? "Inspector Gadget," "The Care Bears"...just to name a few.
The film itself is set in an apocalyptic world years after World War III. Rats, cats, and dogs have evolved and live a life among the ruins. In the city of Ohmtown resides rockstar genius Mok Swagger. (a major satire of Mic Jagger - in fact, I've heard his lawyers threatened to sue the studio) His musical career is going downhill, and his last concert was not as succesful as it should have been. (there were two empty seats) Because of this Mok vows to win back his fans and rule the world, discovering that if he can find the perfect voice to sing the right notes, then he can resurrect a demon from an alternate dimension. He attends the concert of a four-person band and hears the singing of Angel, the sole female of the group. She is the right voice! He invites the group to his mansion and kidnaps Angel, heading off to "Nuke York" to have the concert of a lifetime. The three other band members (including lead singer Omar, who loves Angel) head to Nuke York to rescue Angel. Meanwhile, Mok's world domination attempt fails and he realizes that to have enough power to resurrect the demon he has to use the power station in Ohmtown. Hence the plot thickens...
As you can probably tell from the previous paragraph, (if not its first two sentences) this movie is very different from any other film you've seen, animated or otherwise. What was my initial reaction to it? Well, admittedly it was quite mixed. The story tends to meander, especially around the Nuke York part, and at times you're left wondering if the filmmakers became overindulgent in what they had. However, I think another reviewer put it best when he said that while you're initial reaction is a bad one, this film quickly grows on you. As I've said it's very different, but it's also very well done. The characters are all well realized and stand out on their own in a quirky way, from Mok as the villain to the "French Canadian sailor" who has only a few minutes of film time. The world is also well realized, and from the mighty power station of Ohmtown to the housing complexes clinging to the destroyed ruins of the Statue of Liberty you really do get a feel for this world. I have to also admit it was VERY well animated. Expect the fine animation you'd see in any big budget Disney film and you'll get it. I really do commend the fellows up at Nirvana for the work they did in regards to that.
Some might compare it to "Heavy Metal" because of the use of music throughout the piece. Yet unlike "Heavy Metal," which used music in the background, "Rock and Rule" incorporates the music with the characters. Lou Reed is the singing voice for Mok, Deborah Harry from Blondie is Angel's singing voice, Cheap Trick provides the singing voice for Omar, and Iggy Pop sings for the demon. (and don't worry, I won't forget the great Earth, Wind and Fire, which made a fitting song for the dance club) All the singers fit the characters and are close to their voice actors, and I'm happy to say "Debbie" Harry is good as Angel's singing voice, so you do believe it when Mok finds her the best suited.
The DVD I'm reviewing is the special edition one, not the 2-disc set. Any one who was a lifetime fan of this movie will love the DVD release. There are character sketches of all the players, small or big, and includes concept artwork of their early designs. There's a commentary by director Clive Smith, which was an excellent listen as he goes into detail about how the film was made, and I'm happy to say he comes across as a pretty cool guy. (he's constantly complimenting those who worked with or under him) The only thing that took me aback was the making-of documentary, which seemed to focus a lot of attention on the more famous singing voices rather than the lesser-known voice actors. While Lou Reed deserves credit for "Triumph" and "My Name is Mok," I think Don Francks deserves even more credit - he stood out among everyone else and quite frankly I think he made the character of Mok work.
A rare gem - I would definately suggest people check this movie out, especially if you are fans of animated films. Even if your first reaction is lukewarm, be like me and give it a second shot. Trust me, it deserves it.
From an artist's son.......2006-09-25
My father worked on this movie while my mother was pregnant with me. This is the movie that helped launched his career and made him into the Dad he is today, so I'm a little biased. Sorry :-)
As you may imagine, I've seen this movie many times. Only in the past few years, however, after going through school and learning about the history of technology and art, have I really been able to appreciate the movie for what it is, especially considering the resources they had at their disposal.
I, of course, preordered the collectors DVD months before it was released. I've watched it many times and I love it for all it's cheesy spendor. It's a great semi-independant film, and Canadian to boot!
I wish I bought the 2 disc set!.......2006-09-24
I was not sure what the movie was going to be like but after hearing from other animation nerds how great it was I gave it a try. I was blown away, I wish I had got the 2 disc set because I wanted more Special Features right away. I usually hate the Special Features because they are lame and in many cases have nothing to really do with the movie, but in this case there were not enough Special Features at all. The Directors Commentary was the best I have ever heard it was great to hear about all the different ways they animated the movie and the different influences going on and how it all effected the movie.
The animation it's self was great and just very, very, smooth. They don't make movies like this any more and that is why animation sucks these days. Companies are shutting down their animation departments left and right may be if they put out quality work like Rock And Rule they could revive the dying industry.
If you just want a cool movie give it a try, if you want a great animated masterpiece with an amazing soundtrack and cool 80's feel this is the movie!

Good! Great But..........2006-04-21
This DVD is great! On the next dVD after Down in Fraggle Rock, There should be episodes like "Mokey & The Minstrels" and "The Honk of Honks" and "Sidebottom Blues" and "Mirror, Mirror" and Ring around THe Rock" and "The Secret of Convincing John" and "Change of Address". Those are good episodes, people. I think you'll like them.
Also, If you answer all the questions on the DVD, You get the episode: "The Great Radish Famine".
Also Includes 2 animated episodes,
"Mokey's Flood of Creativity"
and
"Wembley and The Bemble"
Awesome!.......2005-10-03
Catch a Tail by the Tiger is one of my favorite episodes of Fraggle Rock. Also they put the best episodes on this dvd. But I wish Wembley's Egg was on this. Otherwise its the best!
Dazed and Amazed.......2005-09-24
The quality of the image was fantastic. It was actually sharper than I remember the actual program transmission.
The shipping and quality of the DVD were outstanding. not a single wavering or bobbling pixel. The sound and quality of the music was extraordinary.
I was actually dazed and amazed -- also very pleased. Hope future offers of Fraggle Rock are as good.
I'm not only over 13, I turn 65 next week . . . and I ordered this for myself. Well, I'm gonna let my grandkids watch 'em too.
Great 3rd DVD.......2005-04-29
I am so happy for the release of Fraggle Rock on DVD. I was also very excited to see an ad inside the DVD case stating that they are coming out with a First Season Box Set this fall!!
The Fraggle-Oke is fun!
The bonus episode is about Jr. Gorg going on a search to find a friend while the Fraggles try to steal his favorite radish. I don't know the name of it. It is fun answering the trivia questions to get to the locked episode.

WORST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN.......2006-01-13
This has to be the worst movie i've ever seen with eminem in it.I'm a huge eminem fan but i did not even watch the hole thing(only 15 minutes of it and i've had it for 8 months now and still have not watched it all)it was that bad.I only payed $1.00 for it(IT WAS NOT EVEN WORTH THAT SAVE YOUR MONEY) in a sale bin at a video store good thing i did not rent it for $3.75
an embarassment to all involved.......2005-01-31
Who is responsible for this monstrocity? This film is atrocious. I have watched porn with better acting and scripts than this. It basically consists of a handful of bug eyed rappers with varying levels of credibility jumping around in front of a hand held camera as if they were told to pretend they're on crack. And while theoretically that sounds kinda entertaining,it's not. The only worthwhile moments in the entire film come from eminem, who turns out a lengthy, improvised rant on his horrific run in with the 'hip hop witch'. I have no idea what the motivation was behind the making of this film, but whoever is responsible should hang their head in shame. I cannot stress enough how much of a waste of time it is. You would have more fun eating your own vomit.
Horrible.......2004-05-24
Eminem and Vanilla Ice are the highlights of this poorly made film. If you purchase the dvd (I urge you not to) prepare to be disappointed. The movie has a very weak story-line, is mostly incoherent, and a waste of money.
INCREDIBLE CINEMA!.......2004-04-05
I cannot put into words the sheer brilliance of eminem's improvised narrative about his jaw-dropping encounter with Da Hip Hop Witch. A must see.
Really really Bornig.......2004-01-08
I was so exited when I heard about that movie, I wasted the more silly 18 (it's like 23 U.S. $) in my life. You don't know how boring is this movie. I only wanted to see the end of that, and then, surprise! It's the worst end I've ever seen! I was looking to the clock every minute. Don't think it is a comedy. This is nothing.
