i have to say, this is the best instructional DVD i have ever come across. plenty of metronome drills to build speed, plenty of different phrasing exercises, and even stretches to maximize your practice time (which i seem to get less of every day)!! a great product that i would recommend to any guitarist that wants to get faster and expand their musical possibilities....

Great dvd.... extremely pricey.......2007-06-04

Well this dvd is going to improve your playing technique a lot if you use it regularly... the exercises are not revolutionary, but they are none the less great to do. The only complaint I have besides John's ridiculously, ugly guitar, is that the dvd is very, very expensive. So I would definately suggest buying it used or at a discounted price from one of the individual amazon sellers.

You really can not go wrong with this if you take the time to go through it, because when I first got this I was like what in the world is this [..], but once I took the time to go through it I was really impressed with how much these practice techniques help.

Sage advice and exercises from one of the best guitar players ever........2007-03-27

Full disclosure: I must state for the record that I'm not really a John Petrucci or Dream Theater fan. But this video is a must have for anyone who wishes to learn to play guitar or wants to play better than they are now.

Essentially, guitar instructional videos break down into roughly two categories: there are those that teach music theory and licks, and there are those that teach proper technique and execution. Make no mistake, this video deals strictly with how to improve your guitar playing technique in ways that keep you from avoiding frustration and painful injuries, and as such is one of the best on the market. The tips on warming up and avoiding injuries is worth the price of the video alone if you've ever suffered an injury because you were playing or practicing in the wrong way. There are plenty of exercises to help you improve the dexterity of both your picking and fretting hands, and then exercises to get them working together. Also covered are exercises to increase your picking speed and your picking dexterity, especially string skipping. Then he brings it all together and discusses ways to practice effectively and how to budget your time so that you get the most out of practicing.

Just don't expect for this video to teach many musical ideas, as the bulk of the exercises are chromatic in nature. This DVD is not about what to play, but about how to play, and play well. I'd say that the information available on this DVD is beneficial to all guitar players, especially those who are just starting out or at an intermediate level.

Good for advanced guitar players .......2007-01-04

This dvd is good! "If" your a patient advanced guitar player. But don't expect to learn Dream Theater or any songs. It's based on technique and hand exercise. Don't get me wrong though it's shows you some very good things and you will improve dramatically. So if you want to advance in your playing or want some great warm ups this is a perfect dvd plus john is goofy but he makes you understand his point. Not like other instructors who get so complex that you dont understand what there saying.

Time is the key.......2006-11-06

This is a really great instructional DVD that will show you some good exercises to practice and learn. You will NOT learn a bunch of great riffs that you can then use to impress people with. But, if you use a metronome and practice the exercises as they are intended your speed and accuracy will improve.
