Product Description

Shot in Salzburg against the majestic Bavarian Alps, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is considered one of the greatest screen musicals ever made. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Wise), the film, based on a real family and their true events, tells the story of a young postulate, Maria (Julie Andrews), who, after proving too high-spirited for the Mother Abess and other nuns, is sent off to work as a governess to seven unruly children. The Von Trapp family is run, in military style, by the seemingly cold-hearted Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a lonely widowed naval officer. Seeing how badly he and his children need companionship, he proposes to the Baroness Schraeder (Eleanor Parker), a calculating, mutual friend of beloved family friend Max Detweiler (Richard Haydn). It is the baroness who soon realizes that it's Maria--with her warmth and love for the children--the captain really loves. It is nearly bliss for the newly formed family who loves to sing together--except for the cloud looming over their beloved Austrian horizon: Hitler is ascending to power, forcing Von Trapp to decide whether to join the Nazi party--which he loathes--or force his family to leave their home forever. One of the most memorable scores ever written (by Rodgers and Hammerstein) and breathtaking performances by Andrews, Plummer, and the seven children mark this classic as one of the world's most favorite films.

When Julie Andrews sang "The hills are alive with the sound of music" from an Austrian mountaintop in 1965, the most beloved movie musical was born. To be sure, the adaptation of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's Broadway hit has never been as universally acclaimed as, say, Singin' in the Rain. Critics argue that the songs are saccharine (even the songwriters regretted the line "To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray") and that the characters and plot lack the complexity that could make them more interesting. It's not hard to know whom to root for when your choice is between cute kids and Nazis.

    Read our interview with
    Charmian Carr, who played
    Liesl von Trapp in The
    Sound of Music.
It doesn't matter. Audiences fell in love with the struggling novice Maria (Andrews), the dashing Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), and, yes, the cute kids, all based on a real-life World War II Austrian family. Such songs as "My Favorite Things," "Do Re Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," and the title tune became part of the 20th century Zeitgeist. In addition, The Sound of Music officially became a cult hit when audiences in London began giving it the Rocky Horror Picture Show treatment, attending showings dressed as their favorite characters and delivering choreographed comments and gestures along with the movie. So why resist, especially when the 40th Anniversary Edition is the best DVD yet.

    The DVDs
As if the direct involvement of Julie Andrews weren't enough, the 40th Anniversary Edition of The Sound of Music is a must-have for fans because of the fond sense of nostalgia that will touch all but the worst cynic's heart. Andrews introduces both discs and contributes a commentary track on the film. It's a joy to hear her speak about the film (for example, she explains how she solved her dislike for the lyrics of "I Have Confidence"), and also heard are remarks by Christopher Plummer (who at one point refers to his being 48, which if true would mean his comments were made in about 1975), Charmian Carr (Liesl), choreographer Dee Dee Wood, and Johannes Von Trapp (the real-life Maria Von Trapp's youngest son, who admits that his father did have a whistle but claims that he was not as stern as portrayed in the film). Even with all those people involved, there are still significant gaps of silence, however. Retained from the previous two-disc editions is the commentary track by director Robert Wise, which during the musical numbers becomes an isolated score with no vocals. Also new are sing-along subtitles in English, Spanish, and French, which allow you to have your own sing-along at home. In addition, the film's remastering shows off a truer and much warmer sense of color.

On the second disc, Andrews participates in a new 63-minute documentary "My Favorite Things: Julie Andrews Remembers." But it's really a general making-of documentary with contributions from a number of principals, including director Robert Wise, who died in mid-2005 (not surprisingly, some stories are repeated from the commentary track and from the 87-minute documentary on the previous DVD). Andrews also shares a warm 19-minute sit-down with Christopher Plummer. Carr, who over the years has become the film's biggest advocate, narrates a new 22-minute documentary, "On Location with The Sound of Music," in which she revisits the places in Salzburg where the movie was filmed, and even joins one of the "Sound of Music tours" that have become a booming industry. And acknowledging another big industry, there's a 12-minute featurette on the sing-along phenomenon, focusing specifically on the audience, costumed and otherwise, that attended a sold-out Hollywood Bowl sing-along in 2005. Making special appearances at the event are four von Trapp great-grandchildren and all seven of the actors who played the children. Thankfully, those actors also appear in a 33-minute documentary "From Liesl to Gretl: A 40th Anniversary Reunion," in which they explain what they do now (many are still in show business) and share stories about the film, who was afraid of Christopher Plummer, and what they feel is their responsibility to the film's passionate fans. What's touching is how the group still considers themselves a family so many years later. Other material includes an A&E documentary on the von Trapps, Mia Farrow's screen test for the Liesl role, and a restoration comparison.

    What's Missing?
If you already own the previous two-disc editions, you'll want this 40th Anniversary Edition as well, but you might not want to toss those versions. Probably the most significant omission from this edition is the original 14-minute documentary Charmian Carr made in 1967, "Salzburg Sight and Sound." Carr's new documentary includes only a couple clips from the vintage piece. It's not a great work of art, but it's a notable loss and would have made a good contrast with the new documentary. In addition, the new making-of documentary is about 24 minutes shorter than the old one. Also missing are the audio-only features--the interviews, the radio programs, the Ernest Lehman spotlight--and the historical still gallery examining the history of Salzburg and the film. Granted, this material probably got the least play of any of the old features, but completists might want to hold onto their old discs for it. It would have also been nice to have screen tests other than Farrow's. Tests for all the children and for Christopher Plummer (including singing in his own voice before he was dubbed for the film) were included on Hollywood Screen Tests and Rodgers and Hammerstein: The Sound of Movies. Again, they're not critical but it would have been nice to have them all in one place. So maybe the 40th Anniversary Edition isn't the complete package on The Sound of Music, but it's the most satisfying edition yet, with enough new material to please even the veteran SoM DVD watcher. --David Horiuchi

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The cheesiest, corniest yet funny and romantic movie of all time.......2007-09-10

I just bought this version and haven't had time to play all of the special features, but there seems to be a lot of commentaries and less behind the scene videos. I would love to see the deleted scenes or video of the actors while filming this movie, but I think it's too much to ask since this movie was made in the mid 60's. They did a great job in restoring it though. The quality of the picture is very good, almost as if it was recently made, which led me to discovery of why all actresses back then looked so beautiful and their faces looked perfectly smooth and wrinkle-free... LOL.

However, I think this is by far the cheesiest, corniest yet funny and romantic movie I have ever seen.
The funniest scenes are when the Captain blew his whistle to summon his children and when Maria blew her whistle to ask for Captain's own signal. The look on his face was priceless.
The most romantic scene is the Laendler scene, where their relationship started to bloom.
The cheesiest and corniest scene is the gazebo scene between Maria and the Captain. Somehow, I don't see any chemistry between them. Maybe it's the way the Captain touched Maria or his exaggerated voice when asking for Maria's relative to ask permission, I'm not sure. To me the Laendler scene is more convincing in showing their blooming romance.
The most unforgettable songs are Edelweiss and Do re mi (even my 2yo loves these songs and can sing to them).

Overall, I love this movie, especially the handsome Captain, played effectively by Chris Plummer. I think he should be nominated for Academy Award instead of Peggy Wood who played Reverend Mother... But this is different story.

I feel kind of sorry for the Baroness, since she's not a real villain, but someone who traveled all the way to Salzburg to get acquainted with her beau's children only to be intercepted by their governess/charmer. However I don't disapprove of Maria and Georg's romance, since that's the plot... LOL. Eleanor Parker was convincing in her role as Baroness.

Julie Andrews was also effective in playing a cheerful, innocent and outspoken governess with a gifted voice. It was a little bit disappointing when after the wedding, she suddenly played a role of a doting but reserved and obedient wife.

As for the dubbing issue and the apathy from Chris Plummer... I don't really care. They shouldn't have dubbed his singing since it was fine... Although it was a bit shaky, it sounded sincere and more realistic coming from someone who hadn't sung in years. Perhaps, this (and the fact that he was somewhat limited to similar roles as Captain von Trapp after this movie) is why he dislikes this movie so much up to this day.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2007-09-09

I saw this movie as a child, at the cinema.
Now I returned to it and got even more pleasure.
Fantastic performance, marvelous music, beautiful locations.

5 out of 5 stars "Fa, a long, long way to run..." (if you're from Boston).......2007-09-03

THE SOUND OF MUSIC is incredibly entertaining and incredibly effective despite the fact that it is incredibly hokey. THE SOUND OF MUSIC may actually be the source of all known hokeyness in the universe. Still, despite it all, this film leaves nuclear waste long-haul truckers and oil-rig wildcatters singing, "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" with a smile on their grizzled faces.

There's a lovely innocence to this film that touches everyone who sees it. Julie Andrews as Maria essentially reprises her MARY POPPINS role as the magical governess who brings happiness to a houseful of lonely children being raised by an overly stern but loving father.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC is more or less the true story of the singing von Trapp family who fled anschluss Austria to escape the overwhelming shadow of Nazism. Christopher Plummer plays Naval Captain Georg von Trapp, a rather benevolent despot of a parent who is mismanaging his children with brisk military efficiency when Maria appears. The new Nanny is a reluctant Novice at the local convent, sent out into the world by the Reverend Mother to measure her devotion to the cloister. She soon falls in love with the children and they with her. As Maria and the children bond, the Captain and Maria are drawn to one another. They eventually marry, and as the Germans occupy their country, they flee over the mountains to Switzerland.

Most of the musical numbers in THE SOUND OF MUSIC have become true standards, including, "The Sound of Music," "Sixteen on Seventeen," "Do-Re-Mi" (AKA "Doe a Deer"), "A Few of My Favorite Things," and "Edelweiss" (which is NOT the national anthem of Austria). Rodgers and Hammerstein contributed their best and last to the libretto. Musically, the 1965 movie varies somewhat from the 1959 stage play, but this only means there are more classics to be had in enjoying them both.

Certain scenes have become classics in and of themselves: The opening scene of Julie Andrews flinging her arms and pirouetting joyfully on the slopes of the Unterberg is instantly recognizable. The chorus of smiling nuns is equally recognizable. The gazebo scene and gentle dance between the eldest daughter, Liesl and her boyfriend Rolf, still leaves the viewer with wet eyes. Plummer and Andrews' wistful last scene on stage in Salzbug is moving.

Affection for this staid but singular film has led to it being often parodied (i.e., "The Sound of Murder") and picked on (viz., "The Sound of Mucous"), and it is awfully easy to goof on the dialogue and songs, but nevertheless, we keep coming back to it.

When released, THE SOUND OF MUSIC became the top-grossing film of all time, and, inflation adjusted, it still stands in the top ten. The continuing popularity of this film is amazing, especially considering that four decades later the movie musical is all but dead. There are no dramatic special effects, no car chases, no explosions, no T & A, and not a foul word in this film. No doubt, this combination of elements accounts for its success. The political yahoos who grow fat on trumpeting "Family Values" could do more good by encouraging people to watch this film than by all the other anti-whatever they hypocritically babble about. Of course, that assumes they really believe what they're saying in the first place.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC is true G-Rated quality family entertainment, an artifact of a gentler age.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest movie ever made.......2007-08-31

Every moment in "The Sound Of Music" is magical, the music is incredible, it touches your heart and soul. This is my all-time favorite movie.

    Description

U2's PopMart Live from Mexico City is released on DVD for the first time on September 18th in two formats, a Special Limited Edition 2-DVD Deluxe Packaging version and a single disc, Standard version. Described as a sci-fi disco supermarket, the PopMart Tour opened in its "spiritual home", Las Vegas on April 25, 1997. All trash and kitsch, PopMart introduced a giant mirrorball lemon, a 100 foot cocktail stick - complete with olive, and the works of Lichtenstein, Warhol and Haring, to a live rock audience: a production experience never quite seen before. Filmed at the Foro Sol Autodromo in Mexico City on December 3, 1997, PopMart Live from Mexico City was directed by David Mallet and first released on video the following year. Both the video and audio have been digitally remastered and the DVD includes a brand new 5.1 surround mix in DTS and Dolby Digital of the concert. The single disc, Standard version will contain only the concert material and the Special Limited Edition 2-DVD version will feature on the 2nd bonus disc, nine previously unreleased live audio and video tracks, four documentaries, a PopMart tour visuals montage, and DVD-ROM extras.

    4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Lemon (YUM!).......2007-09-14

The huge screen behind them with the racing comic book imagery gives me a headache after watching more than two songs, but an extraordinary tour from an extradinary band. You know you're a great rock band when what you considered your worst failures are still spectacularly awesome and loved by millions! Rock on, boys!

5 out of 5 stars I was in this concert.......2007-09-13

I was in this concert, I was only 20 years old and I remember that in many radio segments saids that U2 didn't going to play that day because they had a sereius problem one day before with the son of the president of Mexico, but they didn't cancel the concert and played one of the best concert on they history.

This DVD really doesn't have price

5 out of 5 stars U2 Live at their Best.......2007-09-12

Great show live. Any U2 show live is a great one but don't miss this. This album and tour was amazing. Listen to PLEASE and it is hauntingly reminiscent of 9-11's tragic events. The songs are more serious than the production with a huge arch, mirrorball lemon, the tinyt nun that has since disappeared, towering screens, an olive....Hard to beleive this all took place 10 years ago. Nice to re-live a concert that truly rocked my world. No disappointments here.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for U2 Fans.......2007-09-01

There are so many reasons to recommend this--I can't believe it's finally on DVD!

The Pop Mart tour and album was incorrectly derided by some critics--and even the band apparently--as a failed experiment. Wrong. That album was some of their coolest music ever, and the tour, while it started rough, by the time of this show is just monster (no pun intended). This BTW was the largest video screen every constructed; after the tour it was sold off in pieces to sports stadiums and the like.

Granted, it you don't like the "ironic" U2 and songs like "Discoteque" you'll probably hate the "lemon" part which is totally Spinal Tap (although that was sort of the point though). Too bad, because right after that song they do THE definitive version of "If You Wear That Velvet Dress," which far surpasses the recorded version.

The show opens with a seamless segue from "Pop Music" on the P.A. into "Mofo." "Mofo" was an interesting, if not fully realized track from the album but here it absolutely kills in a different arrangement. Just like "Elevation" live blows away the recorded version, so it goes with "Mofo."

The sound's great, the band's tight, the crowd is absolutely bonkers. For videos I rank it up there with Live from Sydney (Zoo TV) as their best.

Sure by this point, after Zoo TV, U2 fans had pretty much had enough of the "irony" phase and thankfully they moved on.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE FOR U2.......2007-08-24

THIS CONCERT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE GREATEST PRODUCTIONS EVER...
A MUST FOR EVERY U2 FAN AND FOR ANY FAN OF REAL MUSIC!!

Excellent Les Paul. This is the PBS show without interuptions, or advertisments. Great DVD. Les Paul IS the Man.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Tribute To An Amazing Musician.......2007-09-09

What can I say about one of the most amazing musicians and inventors to ever live. I am glad to say he still lives and plays with still amazing skill at 94 years old to sold out crowds in New York city. This video does such a wonderful job honoring a man that was driven to create a better way to record and improve the guitar so much so that Gibson named a model after him when he redesigned it. It also shows his beautiful wife Mary Ford and her amazing voice and she and Les literaly ruled the music scene at that time. Buy this ideo and cherish it you will play it again and again.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Sensational........2007-09-05

The DVD covers superbly the legend of Les Paul, from the legendary musician who has undoubtedly touched and affected us all with his inventions. Without Les Paul there life would be pretty dull. I've been honored to meet Les at the Iridium in 2005. This was one of the greatest moments in my life which I will forever cherish. Get the DVD.

    5 out of 5 stars He's not taxidermized, but he's still electrifying........2007-09-03

After that ridiculous tribute that seemed more like a "cover-up"--"American Made/ World Played"--I was beginning to suspect the 90-year-old (now 92) legend was all illusion, more Wizard of Oz than Wizard of Waukesha. Rest assured that Les is no, not yet at least, mere icon or totem. Far from a barely preserved specimen wheeled out on stage in a rocker, he maintains his balance on a precarious stool and serves as ringmaster for the Monday night festivities at the Iridium. Of course, he's surrounded by and partly carried by some ace New York musicians, who enable Les to bask, deservedly, in the spotlight and evade anything resembling breakneck virtuosity on the instrument.

This is a five-star DVD for the 90-minute PBS history alone--OR for the 90 minutes worth of extras, such as the Iridium set. Add the two together, factor in the bargain price, and this disc is nothing less than 180 minutes of indispensable, must viewing. The audio fidelity and production values are first rate, whether the music is vintage Lester or his more recent musical activities which, for the most part, have gone unrecorded for the past 30 years. The extras include "honest" musical exchanges with Keith Richards and a rare opportunity to see and hear a latter-day Kay Starr, no worse for wear than Les, singing "Exactly Like You." Then there's Merle Haggard and Les doing "Pennies from Heaven," both of them practically honoring the tune's simple melody. And a delightful duet on "Avalon" with Chet Atkins circa 1990 (The secret's out. The supposedly "intuitive" musician Les knows keys! Rather than holding down one finger to signal one flat, he mouths "F" to the piano player for his solo turn).

One can only hope that some of the guitarists on the "American Made/World Played" CD will discover this DVD and subsequently go to some of the pre-1948 Les Paul recordings. He may not have been a harmonic-melodic genius, but he was a superb technician and tasteful musician in the Django tradition. His early trio recordings are 2-3 minute masterpieces, and as the featured jazz guitarist to appear at the first Jazz at the Philharmonic in 1944, he and fellow headliner Nat King Cole managed to bring down the house, whether on up-tempo blues or the challenging but always welcome (in fact, the most-recorded pop standard of all time) "Body and Soul."

5 out of 5 stars God Bless the makers of this DVD! (and Les).......2007-08-29

Maybe it goes without saying...but just in case it doesn't, ANYONE who is reading this either knows enough about who Les Paul is, and needs to buy this DVD; or you don't...and need to buy this DVD! Obviously done by people who know and respect the living legend, this DVD is a great overview of the Man; a loving tribute while he is still with us. Juxtaposing current footage (YES he still performs), with some heritage showing why he is revered as the inventor of modern recording techniques, this DVD is the bargain of the year for musicians, and lovers of music alike. Sure, as a guitar player/collector I wish they'd focused a bit more on the his involvement with the development of the Gibson Les Paul model that I cherish so much. But anyone who has been an icon for over half a century needs more than a 90 min DVD to cover even the basics. And I also realize that for most viewers, the history of why and how someone could so influence music, that even after 50, 60, 70+ years we're only still only fine tuning his ideas and designs might seem a bit too...geeky (if that's a word?). In many ways he's the Edison of modern music, and EVERYONE who has read this review to this point should just spend the $15 or Les this DVD costs and thank me later... God Bless Les!

3 out of 5 stars soundtrack problems, still plenty of goosebumps.......2007-07-04

Bear with me here, I'll get to La Boheme in a minute (and I will also admonish my fellow reviewers).

I've seen a lot of live operas and listened to a lot of opera CDs (and LPs), and one big, difference is that in a live production, it's only the singers' belted-out notes that the audience hears well. The softer notes leading up to and following those notes often are just barely audible above the orchestra. I think it's because one voice, no matter how well-trained, simply isn't as loud as a collection of instruments. And it seems that even the belted-out notes require a little cooperation from the orchestra in backing off a bit. On a CD (or LP for that matter), all sung notes are audible, because the singers have their faces inches from a good quality microphone. Call me corrupted by technology, but I like the CD sound better, except for whatever sound quality is lost in the recording process itself. The balance between the orchestra and the singers is better.

Now, let's understand something about opera DVDs generally. You can't have opera singers holding microphones on camera. So there are two choices in getting the singers' voices recorded, neither of them perfect. One can try to record as they're performing, either live or on a set and in costume, using either a parabolic or shotgun microphone. This gives you perfect lip-sync, but sometimes gives you the out-of-balance sound typical of live performances (but not the clear distortion-free sound of a live performance). I'm not sure why this happens; I think it must be because the microphone operator's aim isn't as good as it should be. The other option is to lip-sync, even if that means with the same person. This yields a more balanced sound, but sometimes the lip-sync-ing is not perfect, and sounds emerge from closed mouths. Personally, I prefer the latter, as I prefer the better sound balance, and can tolerate a little imperfection in the synchronization.

This La Boheme, recording, like all the live @ the Met recordings, uses the parabolic or shotgun microphone technique, with all the shortcomings that that implies. Pavarotti and Scotto are (well, were) among the best in the world, of course, and live up to their reputations--when you can hear them. All the minor-role singers are excellent too. The important duets toward the end of in Act 1 are mostly ok, but much of the singing-over-singing in Act 2 suffers from the poor-aim problem and is disappointing. You turn up the volume and just barely hear the lead-up, then are somewhat satisfied by the punch note, and then the following accompanying chord from the orchestra flattens your lampshades. Act 3 is OK, since there are fewer people singing at one time. Act 4 is pretty much the same for the same reason, with only a few faded sung notes. The last part of Act 4 was not a great turn-on for me, although I have to admit, I have more problems with Puccini on that issue than any singer, conductor, microphone operator, or recording engineer. I guess I just don't think drawn-out death scenes are amenable to great music. I feel the same way about the last parts of Traviata, Norma, and Carmen for that matter. I find them tedious, but that's just me, I guess.

The fidelity of the sound is ok, considering the age of the performance (at least on my equipment, a pretty good Klipsch 2.1 system--better than Bose but not really hi-fi). They must have cut the DVD from a pretty decent master tape. They got a separate grant for "restoration," so maybe that had something to do with it. However, throughout the opera there is some sort of a growl on the soundtrack that sounds a bit like muffled speech, as though there was a little leakage between the main microphone signals and the instructions from the director to the camera or microphone operators.

The performance is really quite good, even if somewhat staid Met standard. I think I like the applause after the arias, duets, and at the ends of acts, although they let it go on a little too long. I have the DG Cosi (lip-synced) and, while it has excellent sound quality, it doesn't have applause, which I must admit, I miss. But I really could have done without Tony Randall's synopses--I just skipped over them (I'd have preferred Walter Matthau, but probably would have skipped over him too). Of course, La Boheme doesn't really lend itself to the lavish staging that is so typical of Met productions, but, the sets are well done, and it's as good a Café Momus as I've seen anywhere. The acting is as good as you'd expect. One minor goof that I was expecting was that Murphy's law would decree that among a bunch of actors complaining about being cold but singing their hearts under hot lights in a warm theatre, someone's bound to start sweating visibly. Indeed, it happens in Act 4 where, in the coat aria, Colline's face has quite a sheen on it.

Well, OK, now to my admonishment. All you reviewers out there, you're not giving me everything I want. TELL ME ABOUT THE SOUND QUALITY! It's really important. When I read reviews, they tell me about everything else, and I'm getting tired of reading every review twice looking for something that isn't there. As far as I'm concerned, sound quality and singing artistry are the two most important features. Even if you do have the latter, you won't enjoy it unless you also have the former. When I pop that DVD in my machine and crank up the volume, I want to hear something close to a live performance in terms of crispness and frequency balance and not a distorted and/or muddy mess, as I have in so many opera DVDs. And I'm counting on you to tell me which I'll get. For example, this Boheme is a little turbid, spotty, but generally not muddy or too distorted. So, to summarize, despite a few shortcomings in the sound, there're still a few goosebumps in this DVD.

    Ciao

3 out of 5 stars A good production of the Puccini war-house with a caveat on the sound and picture quality .......2007-06-14

Puccini's famous Opera receives a spirited performance in this landmark production from the Met.

The sound and video quality are limited but it's amazing they are as good as they are given this was filmed live for television in 1977.

Has there ever been a better Rodolfo than Pavarotti? He produces effortless tone and diction (as usual) and, still in his prime, he fits the role of a struggling young writer perfectly.

Scotto is a bit old to be a Mimi but quite good.

Maralin Miska steals the show as Musetta.

(****) for the performance and (**) for the muffled sound and murky picture.

5 out of 5 stars FIRST EVER "LIVE FROM THE MET" WELL REMASTERED.......2007-02-16

There isn't much to add to what the other posters have said about this truly historic DVD remastering, but allow me a few comments. This is it, the granddaddy of Met telecasts on PBS, the first in the long-running, but recently sadly dormant, "Live from the Met" series. (Apparently Peter Gelb's commitment to live movie-theatre telecasts from the Met will help get the PBS series back on the rails--we've already had the English-language "Magic Flute" on broadcast TV this season, with "I Puritani" coming soon.) Scotto and Pavarotti make a nearly unbeatable team in this score; both have Puccini's music coursing through their veins. Scotto was in her "plump" period here (seeing a video playback supposedly prompted her weight loss!), but she's plump in a cute way. As always, dramatically she goes straight to the heart of the role of Mimi, and vocally is in near-prime condition. As someone else commented, it's such a pity her definitive Butterfly, well-documented on studio (audio-only) recordings, was never videotaped for TV. Pavarotti does nearly lose the high C in "Che gelida manina"--but give him proper credit for not transposing the aria down a half-step as Domingo always had to, and as Carreras does on the 1982 "Boheme" telecast! At this early-mid stage of his career, he is definitely a LOT more mobile than he later became, and that's all to the good. But the revelation is in the light and shade of his facial expressions. His ability to act for the cameras--when he was of a mind to--always surprised (and pleased) me. The rest of the cast is an eminently likeable bunch. Wixell was never exactly an Italianate baritone with his grainy, wide-open timbre, but he was a consummate musician and sings magnificently here. Paul Plishka never seems to get his due from critics--count me as a longtime fan of his rich, sonorous voice and bluff, hearty acting. Similarly Allan Monk, the Schaunard, always seemed much underrated and underprized, at least to me. Gorgeous, rich, lyric-baritone sound and fine characterization--was the voice perhaps undersized in the house? (I never heard him live.) Marilyn Niska's Musetta never struck me as being quite on this level, but she contributes an enjoyable, lively performance. Levine was at his very best in this score, and the Met Orchestra and chorus responded with crispness and precision.

I must dissent from some of the positive comments about the production itself, borrowed by the Met from Chicago Lyric Opera. On the original March 1977 PBS live telecast it looked dark, dank and dreary, even the Cafe Momus act. It still does... DG's remastering can't do much about that, but the clarity they achieved is still pretty remarkable. The sound is cleaner and richer than I remembered too, though PBS still had a lot to learn about miking the Metropolitan Opera House effectively. The later Zeffirelli production with Stratas and Carreras is thrilling in an eye-candy sort of way, and nearly as well sung as this one. But this is my sentimental favorite.

As with the Met "Rigoletto" and "Luisa Miller," DG has seen fit to remove all of announcer Peter Allen's commentary during the curtain calls, but owing to the historical nature of being the first PBS Met telecast, they do include NBC newscaster Garrick Utley's introductory remarks. I remember being rather annoyed and/or impatient with the live backstage interviews--"for God's sake, let these people go to their dressing rooms and REST until the next act, will ya?!" But actually I'm glad to be able to see them again. (But note that for the second PBS telecast, "Rigoletto" in November of '77, the interviews were PRE-taped.) Many thanks to the Met and DG for bringing this classic performance back in such a fine remastering!

    5 out of 5 stars classic boheme.......2007-01-10

I have little to add to the other reviews about the performance. It is a classic. Both Scotto and Pavarotti perform signature roles; certainly, Scotto may not have the "purest" voice for the part, but she is in good shape and, more importantly for a video, knows how to act. Pavarotti is "early" rather than "late" Pavarotti -- voice in great shape and, although he doesn't look like the starving artist, he is able to move about the stage. Niska turns in a superlative Muzetta; heard her sing several roles during that decade (from Nedda to Salome) and was always impressed with her voice and acting; never could figure out why she didn't make it "big". As a couple of reviewers have pointed out, because of the age of the performance (1977), the video is a bit soft, not as sharp as we have come to expect in the digital age. However, the lighting is good, the sets are typically MET traditional. I've seen a couple of more recent Bohemes and find none better than this one.

Maverick director Michael Winterbottom wondered about the double standard of why novels can have explicit sex scenes and be legit and films could not. So his short film of a relationship based solely on sex and a love for music is the result of that thought. If the definition of a porn film is to shoot actors performing graphic sex scenes for real, then 9 Songs qualifies. It certainly doesn't feel or look like your standard whoopdee-do XXX feature. It's as glossy and low-budget arty as Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People or I Want You. But yeah, Matt and Lisa do everything to each other, and the actors are not "just acting" in some of the sex scenes. No matter how landmark the movie might be, there is not much story here (at least a book with hot sex often has a good story to it). Lisa is an American drifter in London who hooks up with Matt, a scientist who studies glaciers in Antarctica. They have sex and visit nine rock concerts including Franz Ferdinand and The Dandy Warhols. As advertised, you can't find these musical performances anywhere else, but we just see them from way back in the crowd. The film has an essence of how someone can find bliss in another person's body, and the emotional, magical weight that can hold over you. But that spell doesn't last. Since the sex is real, Winterbottom had to cast unknown actors, and they really don't make an impression, especially with the lack of story. --Doug Thomas

They meet at a mobbed rock concert in a vast music hall - London's Brixton Academy. They are in bed at night's end. Together, over a period of several months, they pursue a mutual sexual passion whose stages unfold in counterpoint to nine live-concert songs. Featuring nine live concert performances not available anywhere else by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Von Bondies, Elbow, Primal Scream, The Dandy Warhols, Super Furry Animals, Franz Ferdinand and Michael Nyman. Special features include a Concert Performance-only option.

2 out of 5 stars Great sex, awful movie.......2007-09-17

I'm not sure what the difference is between a porno flick and a legitimate movie. Supposedly legitimate films have a plot. This movie claims to have a plot but it's hard to find. We know almost nothing about the characters, or how they got together or why they're together and through the course of the movie we never do learn anything about them except they love to have sex. We don't have any compelling reason to care about either of them. I guess this is considered an art film because the lighting is bad, it especially gets bad during the explicit sex scenes. The story consists of having sex intermixed with rock concert scenes. Somewhere in there they insert a few minutes of some kind of documentary with clips of Antarctica. The bottom line is the director did a great job of capturing some pretty hot and explicit sex that's better than most porno films but like porno films the plot is hard to find.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Fun.......2007-09-13

This movie was a lot of fun for me. The music was great and the way they filmed the performances made you feel like you were there. There are some real sex scenes that kind of made me feel like I was a spying on the couple, but it was appropriately done. It didn't feel like porn at all and made me wonder, what makes porn porn?

3 out of 5 stars Interesting premise, thin execution.......2007-09-13

I keep wanting to like movies like 9 Songs and Shortbus because I believe in the idea of them...but the reality doesn't ever live up to the concept. Yes, it's nice to see someone at least *try* to deal with sex -- real, actual sex -- in film. I only wish the story supporting the sex in 9 Songs wasn't so thin and forgettable.

The main problem I had was not caring about the characters. We get no real sense of them -- why do they even like each other? What is the attraction besides being physically nice to look at? Without any sense of that, watching them have sex never rises above the level of spectacle -- it's interesting insofar as there is some novelty in watching people actually have sex without the self-conscious and moronic trappings of standard-issue porn -- but I never felt moved or connected. And that's a pity.

I also wish the concert footage were better shot because there are some excellent bands and good songs featured. Oh well.

3 out of 5 stars What do you call a movie with lots of sex but no plot?.......2007-09-06

9 Songs (2004) is a British film depicting the "love story" of Matt (Kieran O'Brien), a climatologist, and Lisa (Margo Stilley), an American exchange student, told from hindsight as Matt travels to the Antarctic. Matt and Lisa share common interests of sex, drugs, and rock & roll. That is the extent of their connection. Unfortunately, a movie based solely on sex, drugs, and rock & roll does not equate to a meaningful film experience. What the film lacks in plot and meaningful dialogue, it attempts to make up for with sex and more sex, all of which is explicit and unsimulated. Concert footage of the bands performing the following nine songs upstage the film's graphic sex scenes:

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, "Whatever Happened To My Rock And Roll"
    Von Bondies, "C'mon, C'mon""
    Elbow, "Fallen Angel"
    Primal Scream, "Movin' On Up"
Dandy Warhols, "You Were The Last High"
    Super Furry Animals, "Slow Life"
    Franz Ferdinand, "Jacqueline"
    Michael Nyman, "Nadia"
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, "Love Burns"

For a movie that strives to be a "love story," where's the love? Where's the story? You can dismiss me as a film snob, but is it too much to expect a plot in a mainstream movie? For better sex, drugs, and rock & roll mainstream films, check out High Fidelity and Almost Famous - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition). And for erotic cinema with a plot, check out any film Catherine Breillat (e.g., Romance; Anatomy of Hell).

5 out of 5 stars So I liked the music...and!.......2007-08-28

If you are looking for award winning writing, directing and acting look elsewhere. On the other hand if you enjoy a film with a good modern soundtrack, gratuitous sex and a story that while not deep comes across real life...you'll like this one too.

2 out of 5 stars Not the newer State Fair.......2007-08-26

I would have purchased this item if it had contained the State Fair with Pat Boone and Bobby Darin as claimed. But as the picture on the cover clearly depicts the older version I was not interested.

I have enjoyed having them as my own and adding to my collection so I can watch them whenever I want and as often as I want but most especially with no commercials and no editing!! Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Fun, Fun.......2007-06-03

We love the effort that has been put into these DVDs. We will often set the disk to play just the "song" chapters.

We use the "sing-a-long" setting to teach our daughter to read.

If you love the music purchase this set. If you love the movies purchase this set.

If you have children, this is a must-buy item - they will view these movies over and over again. And no worries about inappropriate materials - this is good wholesome entertainment for the entire family.

    Amazon.com essential video

The Baby Einstein Company's "video board books" were designed as music-focused developmental tools to stimulate babies' brains (prompted by research proving that exposure to classical melodies can improve verbal ability, spatial intelligence, creativity, and memory in youngsters). Now the company is expanding into other art forms, including color and art. The idea remains the same--taking bold, beautiful objects (toys, puppets, nature scenes) and setting them to fun renditions of classical music (their recordings are easily the best in the crowded field of child development). A new puppet--Vincent Van Goat--introduces the six primary colors and associates them with Van Gogh's paintings--"The Starry Night" for blue, "Wheat Fields with Reaper" for yellow. The only misstep is the poetry written and read by creator Julie Aigner-Clark, which is strongly reminiscent of Dr. Seuss's My Many Colored Days.

The company suggests the program is for toddlers between the ages of 1 and 4. Harsh sounds between segments--such as balloons popping and tires screeching--will draw the attention of youngsters but will probably render the video inappropriate for babes in arms. The video can be purchased by itself or with a beautifully produced 28-page book featuring Van Gogh's paintings, screen shots from the video, and Clark's poems. The combination set may be the best way to engage 3- and 4-year-olds' interest; they can follow along in the text while watching the video. Music includes "The William Tell Overture," "The Blue Danube," "Bolero," and Brahms's "Lullaby." The video also provides information on the cool toys seen in the ending "Toy Chest" segment. --Doug Thomas

1 out of 5 stars baby will speak slowly be careful.......2007-09-17

My son is now 1 year and 11 month old, from his very early time, about 3~4 month old, we began to introduce Baby Einstein series to him. He could not without the shows later, averagely watch 3~4 hrs per day. Now he is nearly two years old, but could not even speak out 6~8 words, much late than my friend's son (the same age), my brother's daughter and my sister's son (compare them at the same age). I become to suspect if the Baby Einstein shows do benifit younger babies. The shows seldom speak, mostly music or silence. I really regret that my son spend too much (one and half year) on Baby Einstein. listein to me, talk with you baby, NOT let the Baby Einstein do that.

    5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2007-08-14

It's fun all the time! Not one part boring. My baby loves it and she watches with other kids who are older than her and they all give the mommies a break!!
I love to watch it too cause it's colorful and withn beautiful images... the puppet show is very cute too!

    3 out of 5 stars stressfull music.......2007-08-05

My baby is 7 months old and loves Baby Einstein videos, but this one does not call her attention at all, especially with its music, it is so stressfull!!!! The toys are not as nice as on the other videos and whomever is telling the story when the "puppets" show up should speak louder...

4 out of 5 stars Bright colors and soft music.......2007-08-04

It's a nice video and I'm glad we got it, we use it a lot, but it isn't one of our best. For some reason it just doesn't hold his attention very long, though he does keep going back to it. I don't think it makes the color names important enough. It spells them out and says them quietly, but I don't think enough. The screen get painted with real life colors and scenes with those colors, balls, balloons, flowers, etc. It's a nice video to view before bed time because it is calming and relaxing where some videos tend to be more hyper. I sometimes put it on the laptop and let him watch and listen to it at bed time, in his crib. That's when he seems to like it the most.

5 out of 5 stars Baby Van Gogh, Just Smashing.......2007-06-03

Baby Einstein is a wonderful new line of videos which will help aid in your child's development. Get them off to a new start with these videos, and this special one, Baby Van Gogh. Get them will on the way to a successful future now! Don't wait!

Almost Famous is the movie Cameron Crowe has been waiting a lifetime to tell. The fictionalization of Crowe's days as a teenage reporter for Creem and Rolling Stone has all the well-written characters and wonderful "movie moments" that we expect from Crowe (Jerry Maguire), but the film has an intangible something extra--an insider's touch that will turn the film into the ode to '70s rock & roll for years to come. We are introduced to Crowe's alter ego, William Miller (Patrick Fugit), at home, where his progressive mom (Frances McDormand, just superb) has outlawed rock music and sister Anita (Zooey Deschanel) has slipped him LPs that will "set his mind free." Following the wisdom of Creem's disheveled editor, Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman in an instant-classic performance), Miller gets on the inside with the up-and-coming band Stillwater (a fictionalized mixture of the Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin, and others). A simple visit with the band turns into a three-week, life-altering odyssey into the heyday of American rock. Of the characters he meets on the road, the two most important are groupie extraordinaire Penny Lane (Kate Hudson in a star-making performance) and Stillwater's enigmatic lead guitarist (Billy Crudup), who keeps stringing Miller along for an interview. From the handwritten credits (done by Crowe) to the bittersweet finale, Crowe's comedic valentine is an indelible, heartbreaking romance of music, women, and the privilege of youth. --Doug Thomas

    Description

Audiences and critics alike are raving about this larger-than-life rock'n 'roll favorite that Roger Ebert calls "one of the best movies of the year!" The guys of Stillwater have the sound, they have the look and Rolling Stone Magazine wants their story. For young reporter William Miller, it's the opportunity of a lifetime as he hits the road with his favorite band and discovers the price of fame, the value of family and the limits of friendship.

5 out of 5 stars An unexpected insight into a female character.......2007-09-04

This is a well-done movie about an almost-famous rock
band touring in the seventies as seen through the eyes
of an almost-employed young journalist who's been hired
    to follow them.
Most of the characters are expectable if not exactly pre-
dictable. The surprise-and for me, the delight-of this movie
is the depiction of the young, drifting groupie. Kate Hudson
pulls off the perfect combination of toughness, vulnerability
    and romantic dreaminess.
In the very masculine world of rock movies, this depiction of
a young woman stands out not just for its rarity but for the
contrast of her many-layered humanity with the testosterone-
fueled excess of the rest of the cast.

In the very best sense, this is a superb chick flick about a
    remarkable woman.

    1 out of 5 stars Great Era,Music HORRIBLE Film!!.......2007-08-30

I went into this film with the highest expectations ever. I was aware of the backstory about Cameron Crowe and his travails with Led Zep circa 1973. This film disappoints horribly. Maybe those of us who appreciate Crowes contributions to film and print expect anything the man poops out to be worthwhile, MAYBE the true story wasn't so interesting after all.

The pluses are few- the soundtrack is a collection of gems we don't hear at all on FM radio-Iggy Pop,Free,Deep Purple, Neil Young.
Minor plus is the appearance of late comedian Mitch Hedberg, though just on a walk-on role.

    The minuses are many-

The implausibly crappy "hit" band "Stillwater" the film is based around.Even Spinal Tap could grind out some sounds we could see selling. Stillwater is a weak caricature of a 70's era rock group, with a bland hard rock/blues sound. You've got to hear their song "Fever Dog" to apperciate how uninspired it is.

This is a wasted role for Fairuza Balk who usually plays an interesting wildeyed psycho chickie. There's a stupid non-sequiter line from her -"Does anyone remember laughter?" a quote from a live Led Zep album that is perhaps intended as a "shoutout" to Zep fans.

Overrated Kate Hudson, not as cute as mama Goldie, Kate has had her career gift-wrapped for her and she turns up in this "chick-flick" in disguise. Her free-spirit hippie role is predictable and lifeless.Even from the eyes of the naive 16 year old protaganist just figuring life and her out,her role is bad, her acting mediocre.

The band, roadies and hangers-on all singing "Tiny Dancer" together on a tour bus. Cloying and unenjoyable, even by those who tolerate Elton John. WHY??

I completely do not understand the film press and it's fascination with this weak film.I am a major fan of 70's era rock and would have been happy to have almost anything served up. Instead the viewer is subjected to an estrogen-shot with a dirty needle. This is a ROMANTIC COMEDY/COMING-OF-AGE flick with a side story of rock-n-roll tours.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it in spades.......2007-08-22

If you love this film, you'll love the unedited version...deepens the experience. The VO commentary with Crowe and his mom rocks.
