Amazon.com Essential DVD
There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.
The 10th anniversary edition of the landmark film repackages most of the extras found in the original Ultimate Toy Box set plus a few more. Two keen retrospectives are new, one with an assortment of talents including Roy Disney and Peter Jackson chiming in on the film's impact. The other is a roundtable with Lasseter and three of the creators simply talking about the experiences without--thankfully--any cutaways to noisy film clips. There's a load of other extras since the Ultimate Toy Box was one of the first and best DVD sets. Missing (besides the second film, which will be released separately) is the effects- and music-only tracks. Added is a whopping DTS soundtrack along with a remixed Dolby 5.1 track. The DVD has a higher transfer bit rate for a better picture, but only high-end enthusiasts will notice it. Since the film is a digital-to-digital transfer, both versions are eye-popping. A must-have set unless you have the Ultimate Toy Box.
Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar for "the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas

Experience a hilarious fantasy about the lives toys lead when they're left alone. Woody (Tom Hanks), an old-fashioned cowboy doll, is Andy's favorite. Get Toy Story 2 insted!!.......2007-09-16
This movie is not as good as made to be. It is boring and overrated. I bought this dvd at a local Blockbuster Video without even renting it i can't get into it. The first time i watched it after I played it I was depressed!! Of course i didn't want to hate this movie so I gave it one more chance. Even after 2 times I still can't get into it. I have Toy Story 2 on dvd and I enjoy that one more. Toy Story 2 is funnier and much better as a matter of fact, I will stick with that one along with my favorite movie Monsters, Inc. Toy Story 1 was week compared to Toy Story 2. Do yourself a favor and if your considering purchasing a Toy Story dvd, get Toy Story 2, don't waste your hard earned money on Toy Story 1.
Its good but can scare .......2007-09-15
My eight year old loves this movie. My two, nearly three year old loves this movie up until the introduction of the bad child next doors house. From then on this film is not suitable for smaller children as it becaomes dark and scary (to them its scary). But the ending is great. So don't watch the scary bits and this is fabulous. But overall its a great movie for the family.
The movie I loved before I even liked movies........2007-08-29
I remember 12 years ago when I first saw "Toy Story." As for "Pocahontas" being my first movie I saw in theaters and enjoyed it, I could enjoy "Toy Story" even more. "Toy Story" really got me into loving movies, and I even think that Buzz Lightyear is so cool, I like yelling out "To infinity and beyond" as a kid.
"Toy Story" is the first computer animated film of its own kind, and it's not just one great animated movie, it's an excellent movie to begin with. And after making "Toy Story" and people enjoying it, even animators, animators really want to make computer animated movies like that. Honestly, so would I.
"Toy Story" tells the story of the toys in Andy's room. Woody (Tom Hanks) has always been Andy's favorite toy. Until one day, Andy gets a really cool space ranger toy named Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) for his birthday. When Andy starts loving Buzz Lightyear even more than he loves Woody, the toys have a fight.
So one night, Andy decides to take Woody to Pizza Planet initally trying to take Buzz Lightyear. Eventually, the two come up and wind up getting lost. Unfortunately the next door neighbor, Sid, finds them and takes them home with them. Sid loves torturing toys for fun, and winds up torturing Woody and Buzz. So the two have to make a plan to escape the house.
The DVD comes with a variety of special features. Too bad that there's no animated short film "Tin Toy," which is the biggest problem of all. But hopefully, we'll see that animated short film in the Pixar Short Films Collection Volume 1 DVD where all the Pixar short films appear. But you get a nice home theater sound on this DVD.
However, the DVD comes with a video of "The Legacy of Toy Story," where animators and filmmakers talk about how they reacted when they first saw "Toy Story." I remember seeing Chris Wedge (director of "Ice Age" and "Robots"), George Lucas (director of "Star Wars"), Brad Bird (writer/director of "The Incredibles") and Peter Jackson (director of "The Lord of the Rings.") You can also see Leonard Maltin, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as well talking about how much they loved the movie. You can also get "Filmmaker's Reflect" where the Pixar animators talk about what it's like making "Toy Story."
There's a game called "The Claw" where you can move the Claw around to pick up something and what can be sort of annoying is the aliens talking about respects to the claw, but I don't mind that. I also enjoyed seeing a sneak peek for "Cars" on the thing, and when I first bought this DVD when it was released, I was very happy with not only just the movie, but the special features as well, and enjoying seeing a sneek preview for "Cars," which I have now a passion for.
The animation is excellent. "Toy Story" brought in one of the first techniques of filmmaking, which is computer animation, and that's the film's strength for the movie. And that's also what Pixar's strength is in making the movie.
Overall, "Toy Story" is an excellent movie and an excellent DVD. If you love this movie, I recommend you buying this DVD.
we love this film!.......2007-08-24
this has always been a family favorite and now its our to watch whenever we want!
classic.......2007-08-23
who wouldn't love toy story? My children 4yo, 2yo, and 9mo loves this movie (even I love it). When I play this movie they sit and watch it like it's the first time they've seen it. My 4yo and 2yo loves to pretend play so they mimic the characters in this movie. Although there were certain words that were used in this movie that I do not approve of like: idiot, stupid, shut up. Overall it's a good movie

A movie that exudes affection and goodwill, The World's Fastest Indian is an unabashed mash note to a lovely character from New Zealand's recent past. Burt Munro, played by Anthony Hopkins, is a cantankerous Kiwi with an obsession: he's been tinkering with his 1920s-era Indian brand motorcycle for years, pushing it to ever-faster speeds. It's the 1960s, and Burt has the utterly mad idea of taking the bike to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, site of world records for speed racing. The movie takes a while to get to the journey--and then the journey takes a while--but the genial atmosphere prevails. (People of a certain age, for whom the word "Bonneville" evokes pleasant associations with hotrods and world-speed records, will not be disappointed in the film's location shooting, or its sense of awe.) Hopkins is not quite on-the-money casting for the jovial, happy-go-lucky Munro, and his accent wavers, but he nails the emotional scenes and the fascination with speed. Smaller bits are well-filled by Diane Ladd and Christopher Lawford (son of Peter), who looks uncannily of the era. New Zealand director Roger Donaldson doesn't take any chances here, but the story clearly means something to him, and that sense of commitment carries the film through its sleepier moments. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Burt Munro: An Amazing Man.......2007-09-05
This was an interesting story of an older guy traveling all the day from New Zealand to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to try to set a world speed record on his motorcycle. With Anthony Hopkins playing that man, you know it's not some hokey little B-film. It's also based on real-life character who did this back in 1969.
This film reminded me of "The Straight Story," starring Richard Farnsworth. That dealt with an old man taking a long tractor ride across the state of Iowa to see his dying brother. It featured a bunch of nice characters he met along his journey. This is much the same as we witness Munro's encounters with a variety of people in the United States. Like "The Straight Story," all the people are good people and help our man. That's nice to see.
Once he finally gets to the Salt Flats, however, his problems are far from over as he is unable to meet any of the minimum safety standards. It appears he made his trip for nothing, but, you'll see what happens if you view this movie/
Once again, having no villains was very appealing to me. New Zealanders say Hopkins did them proud, too, and they would know if he did a good job or not playing a man from their area of the world, whether he sounded and acted realistically. They say he did.
I enjoyed the first 35 minutes of this story the most. Maybe because that's the most innocent part of the film and features a young boy who looks up to Bert and encourages him when few others are willing to do so.
It's when Munro reaches America where the "nice, clean family film" goes south a bit. He hooks up with transvestites, one-night stands, profanes here and there and the PC angle gets a little overplayed. However, despite those negatives that make America a little too weird, everything is done is a tasteful way and it still was a wonderful story. It has to be an inspiration for older folks who might think life's challenges are over once they hit a certain age. Not so, as Mr. Munro shows us in this inspiring, well-photographed film.
This certainly is quite an unknown movie for one which has such a famous actor in the starring role. It's well worth your time, though, to check out..
Worlds Fastest Indian.......2007-09-05
If you like non-fiction movies that tell stories that are larger than life, this is a movie for you. If you liked "Beautiful Mind", "Insider", "Sea Biscuit", "Appolo 13" and "Hurricane" "Tucker" etc. then you would appreciate this story. It's about the endeavor of a single man to achieve something that was apparently so out of reach from the other side of the world. Without giving away the story it tells of a man who comes from New Zealand to the US to achieve his life long goal. It describes his travels and the people he meets and shows the wonderful side of many of these people. The cynic in me waited for some "bad stuff" but it never happened. Hopkins does a fantastic acting job and makes his characters very naive approach to life very real. It is well directed. The real life characters endeavor resulted in a record that still stands today.
Excellent "feel good" movie for the family.
295 Kph On That??.......2007-09-02
I had never heard of the 1920 Indian Scout, (which was not exactly a sports bike, as it turns out). Knowing that the Scout was a pretty puny little machine of under 600cc, I can appreciate more fully Burt Munro's achievements in getting it to got like lightning.
"The World's Fastest Indian" is the story of Burt Munro's journey to the Bonneville Salt Flats in order to see just how fast his Indian would go. I have to admit some scepticism with respect to Anthony Hopkins playing Munro, being English and somewhat heavier than Munro's build. In the end, I thought Hopkins was a marvelous choice and once again he has shown us what a great actor he is.
The movie is a charming one, one that highlights the quirky nature of the main character, and his zest for life. Danger was what kept him young and he had nothing but contempt for those who would treat him like an old man. Munro's adventures through the USA, meeting all sorts of people along the way, are a story in themselves. Even the build up to the Bonneville runs is a nice story of people just being people.
This movie is one of 2007's surprises for me, as I had not expected it to be so good. I really enjoyed every part of this movie and really warmed to Hopkins' portrayal of Munro. If you are into a good human story, then this might be just the ticket.
Excellent Movie.......2007-08-28
Anthony Hopkins is at his best in this one. A fantastic movie and is based on a true story - remarkable.

Awesome.. WAY, WAY Better Than Toy Story 1.......2007-09-16
Toy Story 2 is a great movie!! It would be my second favorite movie, only Monsters, Inc. being my all time favorite. By the way 2 is a lot better than 1. 1 was terrible. In this movie, Woody gets stolen by Al and what else is really exciting about this movie is that the characters go to a toy store, and a airport. Rex is my favorite character in this movie. 2 also makes me into laughter compared to 1 which was no
laughter. This movie kicks @$$!!! Get this DVD. But whatever you do, get Toy Story 2 along with Monsters, Inc. for a great movie collection. TS1 was awful!!
My son LOVES these movies!.......2007-05-18
My three year old son loves the toy story movies! I was nervous about purchasing Toy Story 2 because he was so obsessed with the first, but he loves the second just as much! Definitely worth buying!!
Toy Story 2.......2007-05-15
Great DVD! My 7-year-old grandsons and I loved it! A "must-have" for anyone who owns Toy Story 1.
Classics.......2007-04-05
How can you do better than both these movies for one low price? I love most everything by pixar, and these are no exception. Better yet, it's great to watch these back to back, and see how the sequel really plays off of the first one so much. If you're reading this, you know how great it is, so stop reading and buy the movies.
Wonderful--- entertaining .......2007-03-18
I bought this movie for my 2 1/2 year old grandson. He loves it. He gets so excited when I put this on he makes believe he's Buzz Lightyear flying through the air. It's so funny I had to tape him watching the movie. I highly recommend Toy Story. It's a very enjoyable movie for adults too.

In these eight PBS Kids Television episodes, Curious George's curiosity focuses on the animal world and takes him and the man with the yellow hat from the balcony of their city apartment to a house in the countryside. As George observes and interacts with everything from dogs, bunnies, bears, and bees to tadpoles, cats, squirrels, penguins, and pigeons, he learns about different animals and their distinct characteristics, preferred habitats, and growth and maturation while developing important skills like map reading, tracking, measuring, and sorting. Preschoolers love seeing their favorite H.A. and Margret Rey little monkey spring to life with the help of animation and are sure to be thoroughly entertained by George's cute antics and boundless curiosity. Best of all, they'll absorb some math, science, and engineering concepts while they watch. (Ages 2 to 7) --Tami Horiuchi

Not Worth Keeping.......2007-07-20
It was a waste but a "pain" to return. My 3 yr. old grandson was bored.
very enjoyable.......2007-07-19
Lots of really good lessons for little ones. Keeps my 1 yr. old grandson's total attention.
TV show trumps movie -- again.......2007-07-02
Don't confuse tbis DVD with the movie "Curious George," which comes in a similar DVD case. These are episodes from the far superior TV show. Not that the movie isn't worth your time and money. This is just so much more so.
The product lives up to the credits: Dr. John on the swinging theme song; Ron Howard and Brian Glazer executive producing; and William H. Macy, who makes the most of any role he assumes, as narrator.
There's an urban, downtown quality to these episodes, from being drawn in the manner of classic New Yorker cartoons to the jazzy soundtrack, extending even to the live action suffixes in which a group of young kids further delving into some element in the episode. Even when they're in a rural setting, you get the feeling these kids aren't suburban spawn.
George comes off as a monkey-fied human preschooler, one of the many elements with which the writers have fun (one character calls George "a city kid"). The Man in The Yellow Hat, though often in the stereotypical Long-Suffering Parent supporting role, manages to be more than a two-dimensional character. Watch these episodes and the ones that still air on PBS and you'll learn of a full cast of characters, only a couple of which could be called "cardboard."
It's always a good morning when my daughter wants to watch, "Monkey George."
Happy 3-year-old, happy parents!.......2007-06-08
I bought this for a long car trip with my 3-year-old son, and it did not disappoint. The stories are appropriate for younger children, and I was pleasantly surprised that my son even enjoys the segments with real children after each episode. (I have tried to forward past them, and he stops me!) As a parent, I like the gentle, loving approach that the adult characters take in dealing with George's mischievous behavior, as well as the emphasis given to George's creativity in solving problems. If your child loves George and his antics, s/he will likely enjoy this video.
So Cute!.......2007-05-15
This is a great DVD! However, it is the same cartoon that you can watch daily on PBS Kids. It is great for the car though because it is VERY long - 8 total episodes with the classroom shorts inbetween. Highly recommended!

Charmless and dull, this adaptation of the Broadway hit stars Aileen Quinn as the depression-era moppet, Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks, Carol Burnett as the cruel headmistress at an orphanage, and Tim Curry as a villain. The film never gets its legs, and there is no sense of setting; it's almost as if the whole thing is happening in a void. John Huston nominally directed--no doubt to make money between his smaller, cheaper masterpieces--but one would have thought he would invest something of himself in here. --Tom Keogh

I loved this movie as a child and now my 1 1/2 year old daughter loves it -- especially "Hard Knock Life." This version of Annie is wonderful. Carol Burnett creates such a wonderful character, and the orphans are extremely talented. This film is a step above the rest of the "Annie" movies.

Some called it a snooze-fest, while others tearfully clutched their Kleenex. In any case, Clint Eastwood was an unusual and (as it turned out) perceptive choice to direct and costar in this lush adaptation of Robert James Waller's phenomenally bestselling novel. Meryl Streep costars as Francesca, the lonely Iowa farmer's wife who is instantly attracted to Robert (Eastwood), the photographer from National Geographic who is in the area to photograph the bridges along Iowa's rural roadways. The two fall in love while Francesca's husband and children are away at a county fair, but the story's passion and lasting appeal derive from their decision to part forever after just a few brief days of intimate connection. Superbly acted with an emphasis on quiet, graceful moments of tender revelation, the film builds to a crescendo of powerful and conflicting emotions. Like David Lean's Brief Encounter (to which it bears marked similarities), The Bridges of Madison County is destined to become one of the classic movie love stories. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Tender from beginning to end........2007-09-17
The Bridges of Madison County is deeply moving considering this is a Clint Eastwood film. In my opinion, this movie is Meryl Streep's best and most engaging performance. The film does drag a bit but the love story behind these two soulmates who unfortantely cannot ever be together is just heartbreaking. Call me a sucker for romance but this film is so sexy, it will make you a believer in all things sappy. A must-have for all who are courageous and fearless in love.
Wonderful love story.......2007-09-09
When I went to see this movie in the theatre years ago, I was so sure that I wasn't going to like this film. There was a loud rumbling in the romance community about this story being written by a man. At the time there were a lot of them. This one, Message in a Bottle and a Walk to Remember shortly after. So there I was in all my huffy glory, glaring at the screen. But all that nonesense was forgotten as this wonderful story started to unfold. Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep had me smiling and melting in this forbidden love story in no time flat. By the time we reach the scene where Eastwood is standing in the middle of the street during a rain down pour, I was begging her to get out the car. Run, girl. Run to your true soul mate! Ah, amour. So despite my prejudices I fell helplessly in love with this story--and you will too. Highly recommended.
BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY.......2007-08-28
I own all of Eastwood movies.Including..Rawhide series. All his motion pictures are widescreen...all! What about'.....Madison County?Who in the world didn't stop to think..this too should be in widescreen..to get the whole pictureSCOPE of this great Romatic future classic.I do have it also on Laser Disc.& it's in widescreen.I just run a print to a blank dvd for now.
Come on you people who sell these movies..if nothing else...put both versions on dvd. They do that you know?
Loved This Movie ,Made Me Cry.......2007-08-25
I wasn't sure I would like this movie since I had already read the book and fell in love with this story.
I'll have to admit Clint Eastwood & Merle Streep did a beautiful job. There were parts that were left out of course but all in all a very good movie, still the book was much better and left me wanting more.
Too bad there cannot be a sequel since both characters are now deceased.
The only part I did not like was the beginning where her children found the story of her love story. I hated the actions of the son or maybe it was the actor.
Crud story, glorifying adultery - disgusting trash.......2007-08-15
This movie makes me sick. Basically it's a movie about a woman who betrays her marriage vows, betrays her husband, betrays her children. It's a movie about a man that commits sin by persuing a sexual relationship with a married woman. The first time I watched this movie (and the last) I found myself hoping the husband would come home and catch the two in the act. He would have been justified in kicking the snot out the filthy no good womanizer. There's no repentance for sin in this movie, no confession of guilt. Heck, for all we know the wicked man gave the married woman a mean case of the herps and then moved on to the next town where he did it all over again (that's the way these people are) How many marriages have been wrecked by this type of thing? And they throw it up on the big screen and package it as a love story? No, it's not a love story. It's a story of human depravity at its worst. If this movie had been advertised as such, I would give it 5 stars for it displays wickedness of unrepentant human hearts in grand fashion. But since this movie tries to pass itself off as a romantic interlude between two lonely adults.. uh uh. It's just horrible, new age agenda laden, anti-christian schlock. Avoid it unless you enjoy throwing up in disgust.

Customer Reviews:
UGh........2007-08-04
Bill Murray is the ONLY reason to watch these Ivan Reitman POSs. Ivan hit gold with Ghostbusters 1, a fortuitous comingling of 65mm SFX + sarcastic SNL humor. Alas, #2 was where he really had to show his cajones and it is PAINFULLY unfunny from frame 1. Easily the worst film film I had in my entire DVD collection.
"Ghostbusters" has one of the all-time greatest helicopter shots of lower Manhattan when the Gostbustersmobile goes over the Brooklyn bridge.
Stays true to the ghostbusters we know and love!.......2007-06-21
I remember seeing these movies years ago when I was just a young tyke and now with the purchase of this double-feature pack, I can watch them whenever I want.
As always when watching films again when you are older, you catch things you may have missed due to the innocent mind of being a child. Such is the case with these movies. The comedic timing from the entire cast is right on point and will hve you stitches from the beginning until the very end.
Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Rick Moranis are absolute comic geniuses in these movies. I find the more subtle jokes and humor a bit more appealing as it seems that these are the jokes intended for adults, while the general story is geared toward children. Also, I was never aware that the role of Dana Barret was played by Sigourney Weaver, who is not only amazingly stunning in these films, but also holds her own in the comedy department against the guys.
The double-feature pack doesn't have many extras, but in my mind you can't beat the price and its worth it just for the movies themselves. If you don't have this pack, get it as soon as possible if you are like me and have been a fan of the ghostbusters since childhood.
Blast from the Past!!!.......2007-04-06
We all can sing the song, and know the cartoon, but there is nothing like the real thing! I love both movies!

I remember really liking the first one in the theater. It just seems to have lost something over the years. Still a great deal for the two films. The first is a classic and the second is certainly watchable. The DVD transfer is quite good on the 2 pack edition.
One of my long time favorites.......2007-03-17
Still a pleasure to watch. Enjoyable comedy. Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis at their best. Great support by Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver. Very good direction and script.

Like a Hardy Boys mystery on steroids, National Treasure offers popcorn thrills and enough boyish charm to overcome its rampant silliness. Although it was roundly criticized as a poor man's rip-off of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Da Vinci Code, it's entertaining on its own ludicrous terms, and Nicolas Cage proves once again that one actor's infectious enthusiasm can compensate for a multitude of movie sins. The contrived plot involves Cage's present-day quest for the ancient treasure of the Knights Templar, kept secret through the ages by Freemasons past and present. Finding the treasure requires the theft of the Declaration of Independence (there are crucial treasure clues on the back, of course!), so you can add "caper comedy" to this Jerry Bruckheimer production's multi-genre appeal. Nobody will ever accuse director Jon Turtletaub of artistic ambition, but you've got to admit he serves up an enjoyable dose of PG-rated entertainment, full of musty clues, skeletons, deep tunnels, and harmless adventure in the old-school tradition. It's a load of hokum, but it's fun hokum, and that makes all the difference. --Jeff Shannon
Description
From Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, and Jon Turteltaub, director of PHENOMENON, comes NATIONAL TREASURE. It's the thrilling, edge-of-your-seat adventure starring Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage (1995 Best Actor, LEAVING LAS VEGAS) as Benjamin Franklin Gates. Ever since he was a boy, Gates has been obsessed with finding the legendary Knights Templar Treasure, the greatest fortune known to man. As Gates tries to find and decipher ancient riddles that will lead him to it, he's dogged by a ruthless enemy (Sean Bean, THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy) who wants the riches for himself. Now in a race against time, Gates must steal one of America's most sacred and guarded documents -- the Declaration of Independence -- or let it, and a key clue to the mystery, fall into dangerous hands. Heart-pounding chases, close calls, and the FBI turn Gates's quest into a high-stakes crime caper and the most exciting treasure hunt you've ever experienced.
Customer Reviews:
A treasure of a film!.......2007-09-06
Ben Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) has a family timeline of treasure hunters since our founding fathers has been obsessed with finding the legendary Knights Templer Treasure, one of America's greatest undiscovered mysteries. His rival (Sean Bean) wants to have the treasure too as they compete with each other, Ben decides to steal the declairation of Independence for it has a secret and a caurator (Diane Kruger)joins him on his quest to find the clues to the lost treasure.
Well made and entertaining action adventure from producer Jerry Bruckheimer offers terrific acting and a good storyline. It's an interesting film about "What if some of our national monuments had a secret?" and there's some humor, it's great fun for the whole family and for fans of action adventure.
This DVD has good extras like audio commentary, deleted scenes, alternate ending, three featurettes, opening scene animatric and 3 games.
Also recommended: "The Gonnies", "Indiana Jones Trilogy", "The Da Vinci Code", "Catch Me if you Can", "It's a Mad Mad Mad World", "Mission Impossible Trilogy", "Young Sherlock Holmes".
A fun, fast-paced adventure.......2007-08-13
Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicholas Cage) has spent his whole life searching for the famous Knights Templar Treasure, which is supposed to be a priceless collection of artifacts and gold. As Ben and his friends get closer to finding the treasure, they face multiple challenges, including a nasty enemy (Sean Bean) intent on finding the treasure and keeping it all for himself, and a team of FBI agents (led by Harvey Keitel) who are after Ben for committing the minor infraction of stealing the Declaration of Independence. The film is full of suspenseful chases and an exciting treasure hunt that keeps the audience guessing until the very end.
It's true that this movie is completely unrealistic and also rather silly at times, but it's also a lot of fun and provides quality entertainment: I don't think there's anyone out there that wouldn't relish in the idea of such a large-scale treasure hunt. The one thing about the film that bugged me was the character of Abigail (Diane Kruger), who works at the National Archives and ends up assisting Ben and his partner Riley (Justin Bartha) in their quest. I could buy the fact that Abigail would refuse to let Ben take off with the Declaration of Independence in hand, but the fact that she was so quick to join up with them in the end was just a little out there for me, and not at all true to the character that was sketched out for her in the beginning. Still, that's a relatively minor gripe. "National Treasure" is a fun adventure for the whole family, and I'm looking forward to the highly-anticipated sequel that will be released later this year.
Let the Search Begin..........2007-07-27
Walt Disney Pictures has sure hit a streak of massive live-action box office triumphs of late. Usually Disney does well with their animated films, but for the most part their live-action movies just don't quite add up to the same box office success. However, in recent years Disney's managed to change their luck, sure there've been a couple of flops here and there ("The Shaggy Dog" remake), but those have been massively overshadowed by their successful releases, such as "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" and the sequels that followed, "Remember the Titans", and "Hidalgo". One movie of Disney's that actually surprised both audiences by how good it was, and critics with how well it did at the box office, would have to be the Nicolas Cage, 'Indiana Jones' inspired, action/adventure film "National Treasure".
"National Treasure" is about a treasure hunter named Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) who along with his partner Riley (Justin Bartha) are seeking this lost treasure of the Knights Templar that Ben's grandfather had told him about. It turns out the Gates family has been trying to find this secret treasure for years and have never succeeded, but Ben is getting closer. With clues hidden in numerous places, Ben and Riley are inching closer and closer to finding the treasure. However, Ben isn't like most treasure hunters, his only goal is to find the treasure and divide it amongst various museums so that all the world can see. But they aren't the only ones who know of the treasure, a rogue treasure hunter (Sean Bean), who used to work with Ben until he betrayed him, is searching for the treasure as well, and his motives are not nearly as pure. As both close in on the final clues, each man comes to the realization that the biggest clue lies in Washington D.C. on the back of the Declaration of Independence. Now, Ben will attempt to steal the Declaration of Independence for two reasons, one is that he hopes he can find the answers to solve the clues that has consumed his family for generations, and secondly, to protect the document from reaching his competitor's hands, who will use the treasure for his own selfish gains.
"National Treasure" is actually one of those movies that looks good from the trailers, but also leaves you wondering if it's just a knock-off of some previous hit movie ('Indiana Jones' trilogy, in this case). But surprisingly, even though there are elements that are similar to Steven Spielberg's classic trilogy, this film does deliver to audiences a truly engaging and entertaining escape that feels both fresh and new. Director Jon Turtletaub ("Phenomenon") and uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer ('Pirates of the Caribbean' movies) have taken what was most likely a run-of-the-mill action/adventure and spiced it up to become better than it actually was destined to be. Truth be told, the basic story is fairly formulaic and easy to predict, but the solid performances, fun action sequences, and even some really funny bits of comedy give the movie a much more polished feel. The story actually did have some interesting bits of trivia about our nation's history sprinkled throughout as part of the clues, which I felt was a neat touch, and just the way each of the clues linked up was very well thought out, which also assisted in elevating the basic plot from your average action movie.
The actors all do very well with their roles Nicolas Cage gives a more low-key performance that doesn't appear to include his usual quirkiness that he's so well known for. Sean Bean is right on in the role of the rogue treasure hunter, villains are roles that Bean plays very well, and he always manages to entertain. Justin Bartha provides the bits of comedy that were used to break up the adventurous overtones, without them feeling out of place or forced. Cameo appearances by Jon Voight, Christopher Plummer, and Harvey Keitel are all entertaining and fun to see, although I guess Voight's role is a little more than a cameo but he's only in the latter half of the film.
"National Treasure" is a solid, action/adventure film that has a little something for everyone, and can be enjoyed by the whole family, and as a little bonus you may even learn some bits of trivia that you never even knew about our country.
"National Treasure" is rated PG for violence.
Splendid action packed movie with Nick Cage.......2007-07-27
I love the plot of this movie. It's a thriller, a who done it, action packed with surprises around so many corners in so many directions.
My kinda movie. I'm thrilled to add it to my personal movie library.
great movie.......2007-07-11
This was very entertaining. It combines history and fiction in a believable way and makes us want to learn more about the subjects that we hear about. I definitely recommend watching all the bonus material on the disc. You'll probably end up searching the Internet for more information on the Knights Templar when you are done. I highly recommend this movie.

Annie Hall is one of the truest, most bittersweet romances on film. In it, Allen plays a thinly disguised version of himself: Alvy Singer, a successful--if neurotic--television comedian living in Manhattan. Annie (the wholesomely luminous Dianne Keaton) is a Midwestern transplant who dabbles in photography and sings in small clubs. When the two meet, the sparks are immediate--if repressed. Alone in her apartment for the first time, Alvy and Annie navigate a minefield of self-conscious "is-this-person-someone-I'd-want-to-get-involved-with?" conversation. As they speak, subtitles flash their unspoken thoughts: the likes of "I'm not smart enough for him" and "I sound like a jerk." Despite all their caution, they connect, and we're swept up in the flush of their new romance. Allen's antic sensibility shines here in a series of flashbacks to Alvy's childhood, growing up, quite literally, under a rumbling roller coaster. His boisterous Jewish family's dinner table shares a split screen with the WASP-y Hall's tight-lipped holiday table, one Alvy has joined for the first time. His position as outsider is uncontestable he looks down the table and sizes up Annie's "Grammy Hall" as "a classic Jew-hater."
The relationship arcs, as does Annie's growing desire for independence. It quickly becomes clear that the two are on separate tracks, as what was once endearing becomes annoying. Annie Hall embraces Allen's central themes--his love affair with New York (and hatred of Los Angeles), how impossible relationships are, and his fear of death. But their balance is just right, the chemistry between Allen's worry-wart Alvy and Keaton's gangly, loopy Annie is one of the screen's best pairings. It couldn't be more engaging. --Susan Benson
Description
Considered to be "Woody Allen's breakthrough movie" (Time), Annie Hall won* four OscarsÂ(r), including Best Picture, and established Allen as the premier auteur filmmaker. Thought by many critics to be Allen's magnum opus, Annie Hall confirmed that he had, "completed the journey from comic to humorist, from comedy writer to wit [and] from inventive moviemaker to creative artist" (Saturday Review). Alvy Singer (Allen) is one of Manhattan's most brilliant comedians, but when it comes to romance, his delivery needs a little work. Introduced byhis best friend, Rob (Tony Roberts), Alvy falls in love with the ditzy but delightful nightclub singer, Annie Hall (Diane Keaton). When his own insecurities sabotage the affair, Annie is forced to leave Alvy for a new lifeand lover (Paul Simon)in Los Angeles. Knowing he may have lost Annie forever, Alvy's willing to go to any lengthseven driving L.A.'s freewaysto recapture the only thing that ever mattered'true love. *1977: Picture; Actress (Keaton); Director; Original Screenplay
Customer Reviews:
Thank you Diane Keaton!.......2007-09-15
Annie Hall directed and starring Woody Allen is his best and most funniest film of all-time. But the person I admire the most is Diane Keaton who won an Oscar for Best Actress and she much deserved it. She is hilarious, self-depreating, and goofy as the title character. Allen is actually not too annoying as Alvy, he falls in love with Annie and their relationship goes through various ups and downs. They are a complete mismatch, Alvy tries to change her and Annie gets fed up and decides to fly solo. I highly recommend this entertaining and somewhat serious look at relationships at any age. Enjoy!
Probably one of the worst movies that I've ever seen..........2007-09-04
Personally I don't like any of the films that Woody Allen has starred in. The only good film by Woody, would have to have been "Match Point". I have read and critics have felt that this film is by far Woody's best, it isn't. Winning the best picture award is beyond me! The performances were shallow.
After seeing the movie I caught a glimpse of what Woody Allen's personality is really like. His character, Alvy Singer is expressed as an OCD freak, on top of that he's extremely creepy. Diane Keaton won an undeserved oscar for this role. Why? I dont know. It isn't that great, I have seen mostly postitive reviews, however there has got to be someone who agrees with me. It isn't that good, and it isn't worth watching. IT is absolutely boring, and on top of that it has no sense to it. Basically the movie is about a self-concious man named Alvy, he falls for a woman who is just like him, and the movie just focuses on their on/off romance. It is indeed very bizarre. By the end of the film, I was relieved because it was finally over. There was no humor, and whatever humor there was, it was mostly dry.
So please if you are looking for a romantic comedy, try "Sleepless In Seattle" or "Hitch", this isn't worth watching.
"Is it my imagination, or are you just going through the motions?" .......2007-08-19
Not many filmmakers have chronicled the ups and downs of relationships as well as Woody Allen. Watching "Annie Hall" is to see the director-screenwriter in top-form.
New Yorker Alvy Singer's (Allen) break-up with Annie Hall (Diane Keaton) leads him to reminisce about their time together. He wonders if his efforts to expand Annie's horizons really was a worthwhile endeavor. Did those books, foreign films, adult education classes, and therapy sessions really lead to anything or did they just hasten the end of his time with her?
"Annie Hall" is the one film Allen has made that audiences can most relate to. Anyone who has even been in a relationship can see the universal truths he relates through his characters. Watching Alvy fruitlessly try to intellectualize his feelings for Annie not only proves to be a fertile source of laughs but also puts forth the notion that happy endings in life are dishearteningly elusive. Rarely has romance and misery been portrayed on screen in such an entertaining and sobering manner as in "Annie Hall."
A Classic on par with Casablanca.......2007-08-13
I've only seen this movie 17 times, and I am still "peeling the onion one layer at a time" of this deceptively simple adult romance. Incredible blend of joy and pain and "laugh-out-loud" silliness. Will never forget the scene of Woody trying to recreate the shared intimacy of boiling lobsters with Annie with a new, clueless girlfriend.
OK.......2007-08-05
This movie is rated # 31 on Newsweek Magazine's "Best 100 movies of the last century". I am collecting these. I would place this Woody Allen classic at # 75

The socially restricted lives of 18th-century women hardly seems like a subject that would inspire dozens of 20th (and 21st) century adaptations--but the brilliant novels of Jane Austen are flush with sparkling dialogue, razor-sharp wit, marvelously realized characters that range from adorably sympathetic to grotesquely comic, and--above all--ingeniously intricate plots, which arrive at a seemingly inevitable happy conclusion yet keep you seized with suspense every inch of the way. The Jane Austen Collection pulls together six BBC miniseries from 1971 through 1987, one for each of Austen's much-beloved books.
Unsurprisingly, the gems of the lot are also the best of the novels: Pride and Prejudice and Emma. Pride and Prejudice, expertly translated to the screen by novelist Fay Weldon, skillfully chronicles the ups and downs of the sensible but quick to judge Elizabeth Bennet (the adorable Elizabeth Garvie) and the snooty Mr. Darcy (played with an imperious scowl by David Rintoul). Any adaptation of Emma rests firmly on its central character, and Doran Godwin wonderfully captures Emma Woodhouse's resilience, determination, and exasperating self-satisfaction. Definitely the funniest of Austen's novels, Emma's satirical humor is perfectly balanced with romantic yearning, and this 1972 version succeeds delightfully.
Persuasion, though more melancholy in tone, has a wonderfully sympathetic heroine in Anne Elliot (played by the graceful Ann Fairbanks), who once turned away the man she loved but is given the chance, seven years later, to set things right. Sense and Sensibility suffers from comparison to the star firepower and cinematic sweep of the 1995 movie with Emma Thompson (a must-see for any Austen fan), but the dueling characters of gracious Elinore and headstrong Marianne, two sisters struggling with fallen fortunes, make for enjoyable viewing in this 1981 adaptation. Mansfield Park has perhaps the dullest hero and heroine of any Austen novel, yet the story zips along, powered by some of Austen's most outrageous supporting characters, here brought to deliciously comic life by Anna Massey and Angela Pleasence. Northanger Abbey satirizes gothic romances and the overheated imaginations that loved them; but though the tone is more broad and melodramatic than most of Austen, this 1987 adaptation suits the novel and rounds out this very satisfying boxed set. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Dry, but great!.......2007-09-03
This collection is wonderful, but you should expect it to be VERY dry. The dialog is virtually word-for-word from Jane Austen's novels, and has no bells and whistles. If you're a devout Austen fan (as I am), you'll enjoy this collection. But if you're more into the dramatic, get your pillow ready!
Has the sixties look........2007-07-12
I really liked Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion was true to the Austin book, but the casting wa strange, Emma and Mr. Knightley had no spark, Norlthanger Abbey was so badly cast and acted I could not watch more than a few minutes. Since that bad experience I have not had the desire to watch Mansfield Park, but will do so one day. On the whole, the collection was disappointing.
Wonderful stories.......2007-06-13
I received this collection from my children who know that I am a Jane Austen fan. The DVD's are outstanding. There are several episodes of each story, so you can break them up if you want to - for instance, Pride and Prejudice is comprised of 5 separate episodes and requires both sides of the DVD. The adaptations are excellent - the characters are well fleshed out and believable in the ir roles. If you are a Jane Austen fan, you will love the adaptations, since they follow Ms. Austen's original story lines much more closely than some of the popular movies do. You can recognize lines from the books. Get them - you won't regret it!
BBC Jane Austen set.......2007-05-26
The BBC productions are good, but dated. It doesn't matter, however, if you are a Jane Austen fan.
very good productions.......2007-05-07
I have enjoyed these movies very much. It is interesting to see the older versions.
