Description

Hands in Motion Productions brings to you a master drummer with skills. Not many djembe players have seen or even heard a master drummer play. It is a humbling and exciting experience with a dash of mystique. Thione Diop teaches you five traditional Senegalese rhythms passed down from many generations of Griots.

Watch and learn as Thione plays the rhythms Aconcon, Diba, Djan, Kotoba, and Wango. All djembes and dununs were provided by Drumskull Drums and they look and sound awesome!

This is the first djembe DVD of it's kind to have a karaoke style notation. Follow the notes as they are played. Pick up wherever the rhythm is and never be lost again.

Easy menu navigation using your remote. Each rhythm has an intuitive menu to get to the part you want to learn. Over 70 different videos and over 240 audio tracks to choose from. Each part plays in a loop so you can keep practicing the same part without touching the remote.

Two djembe accompaniments per rhythm. Dunun rhythms have separate parts for the dununba, sangban, and kenkeni. Each part has SLOW and FAST versions.

Ensemble videos include all djembe and dunun parts playing the rhythm. Choose to hear different combinations of drums by utilizing the adio tracks on the DVD. Thione solos to some of the fast rhythms.

The "Rhythm Info" section is of Thione talking about the rhythm's origin and when it is played. Information of when to play the part in relation to the break is also included. All parts have player's view and front view. This is an excellent way to learn technique.

Four audio tracks per part. Play the part alone, or with the other instruments. Each instrument is mixed for separation so you can hear the relationships. Sounds great with headphones and stereo TV sets.

I have yet to receive the book so I can't review it

1 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2006-02-26

This is strictly a demostration DVD with no verbal instructions. It might be good for others, but I did not benefit from it.

5 out of 5 stars Learning from a master.......2005-01-12

Alejo Balingit has directed and produced another winner in his instructional DVD series. This Thione Diop DVD is easy to navigate and use. Being able to combine instruments as one wishes within each rhythm is a definite plus. Neophytes will find parts easy to learn in the slow mode, then can progress to playing them up to tempo. Seeing notation as the rhythm is played can help the learning process. More experienced players can learn new rhythms or study the subtle differences between Senegalese versions and the Guinean versions of familiar ones. The ensemble playing provides excellent background against which to practice soloing.

5 out of 5 stars Concise and amazing video.......2004-12-02

This dvd is amazing. The sound and feel of it provide an easy to follow tutorial for beginners and professionals. The little things are great, the way the menu and camera angles are laid out make it extremley easy to follow along with the dvd and find what you're looking for. I would reccomend this film to any drummer, or anyone interested in great rhythms!

5 out of 5 stars Learn from a Master Drummer.......2004-05-04

(...)I bought the John Yost Teaches West African Rhythms DVD last year. That was a good DVD to learn rhythms and then I recently bought the Thione Diop DVD. This one is even better! It sounds and looks ten times better. The notation lights up and and shows me when to hit the notes and there are so many different combination of instruments I can choose from as it plays. The fast ensemble videos show Thione playing solo with the other drums. I have never seen a master drummer before but after seeing the solo intro I want to see one in person. It is amazing that they can play as fast as they do. There are five rhythms to learn on this DVD but there are 5 parts to each rhytm. I've used the other drums before, and I wish I had the other drums to play with, but the djembe is my favorite.
