Ninety minutes seems insufficient to cover the remarkable career of Quincy Jones, but this documentary, broadcast in 2001 as part of PBS's American Masters series, does a pretty fair job of it. Over the course of some five decades, the man they call "Q" has run the musical gamut: playing trumpet with Lionel Hampton, producing everyone from Lesley Gore ("It's My Party"--yes, it's true) and Michael Jackson (Thriller) to Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra, arranging and producing "We Are the World" and every style from jazz to hip-hop, and composing scores for countless movies and TV shows. Using interviews, photos, film clips, etc., In the Pocket manages to address all of it, while also documenting Jones's two failed marriages, an aneurysm, a nervous breakdown, and other lowlights. Harry Belafonte narrates, and many luminaries are on hand to celebrate the life and work of one of the most prolific and respected musicians of our time. --Sam Graham

Like a mortar fired into the heart of Italian cinema in the mid-1960s, Fists in the Pocket had an incendiary impact that's still felt today. In addition to catapulting first-time director Marco Bellocchio to instant celebrity (and a degree of infamy) among European cineastes, this audacious drama challenged the foundations of Italian society--the institutions of family and Catholic religion--and ripped them to shreds without mercy. It's essentially the blasphemous, comi-tragic tale of a dysfunctional family suffering from various "afflictions" (blindness, epilepsy, mental instability), and the pent-up rage of epileptic middle son Alessandro (played by then-newcomer and non-professional Swedish actor Lou Castel, dubbed in Italian by Paolo Carlini), whose delicate psyche constantly threatens to snap. When it does, and he secretly murders his blind mother and younger brother (also epileptic), this act of "collective suicide" is intended to restore the surviving family to some semblance of normality... but of course it only sends them deeper into their peculiar extremities of human behavior. Sarcastic, sadistic, and at times grotesquely amusing, Fists in the Pocket divided audiences with its love-it-or-loathe-it, hell-raising depiction of a family in ruins, blasting provincial values to smithereens with hints of matricide, fratricide, and incest that remain provocative several decades later. Still considered by many to be Bellocchio's masterpiece, and bolstered by Castel's fiercely disturbing performance, Fists in the Pocket is the polar opposite of happy-family idealism. Self-righteous viewers are urged to proceed with caution or avoid this film entirely! --Jeff Shannon
On the DVD
In addition to the Criterion Collection's routine inclusion of informative critical essays and interviews in a nicely illustrated booklet, extras on Fists in the Pocket include a 2005 interview with director Bernardo Bertolucci, who describes his initial reaction upon seeing Bellocchio's film in 1965 and its importance in the context of Italian film history. A new Criterion-produced documentary chronicles the origin, production, and legacy of the film through interviews with Bellocchio, Castel, costar Paola Pitagora (who plays Alessandro's psychologically unstable sister), film critic Tullio Kezich, and film editor Silvano Agosti. As with all Criterion releases, the supplements and high-def digital transfer of the film itself are flawless. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A dark and perverse portrait of family dysfunction, Fists in the Pocket stunned moviegoers and critics alike when it arrived on the scene in 1965the feature debut of a then twenty-five-year old Marco Bellocchio. This award-winning work certainly heralded the arrival of a powerful filmmaking voice, and it continues to rank as a truly unique classic of Italian cinema
Customer Reviews:
Fists in the Pocket.......2007-06-27
This bleak, tragicomic family drama created an uproar after its release in 1968, ostensibly for offending basic moral values and assailing the virtues of Catholicism, and the title is a metaphorical reference to the turbulent psychology of epileptic sociopath Alessandro. Played with burning ferocity by Swedish actor Lou Castel, Alessandro is a loose cannon of teeming hate who seemingly has no qualms about pushing his blind mother off a cliff or penning incestuous verse to his sister Giulia (Pitagora). Perverse but enthralling, "Fists" instantly secured Bellocchio's reputation as a coolly assured director, and ranks among the seediest of family-dysfunction tales.
One Hit Wonder.......2007-06-08
Fists in the Pocket is generally recognized as Bellocchio's only excellent movie. So be it. Many artists have only one story to tell. In his first movie, Bellocchio shows how he has done his homework in incorporating the influences of other films and genres into his own bizarro story. Fists in the Pocket reminds me a bit of Polanski's dangerous young man in Knife in the Water, made a few years earlier. There's also a bit of Hitchcock here in the black humor and the fact that the protagonist, a budding young sociopath, clearly feels he doing nothing wrong and, in fact, seems to feel perfectly justified and even elated by the ingenuity of his method of problem solving. Hitchcock explored this in Strangers on a Train and Shadow of a Doubt, among other works. Fists in the Pocket could also fairly be dubbed "Italian New Wave" in how it imitates Godard's and Truffaut's disassociated antiheros of their early work. They themselves were imitating and adapting American film noir for the post-war cold war European audience. Finally, Bellocchio's sullen and restless protagonist is reminiscient of the "angry young man" of the British late 50's. No artist exists in a vacuum and is bound to be influenced and inspired by his/her predecessors. If nothing else, a young Bellocchio proves the importance of liking & appreciating other movies if your going to make your own.
Brilliantly symbolic work.......2007-02-03
An epilectic family is the perfect foil for this poignant study of italian bourgeois society.. Like Renoir's rules of the game, this movie opened up new doors for cinema and found new ways to look at certain aspects of social milieu..
Amongst the italian new wave and classic neo-realism of the period it takes a new route something which is real and yet unreal.. Like the movies of Pasolini and bertolucci, Bellochio's fists in the pocket would honor italy's cinematic past while doing something new and radical..
An early controversial Italian work.......2006-07-30
This review is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film.
Fists in the Pocket, released in Italy as "I Pugni in tasca", is the story of a dysfunctional Italian family and has been both praised and condemned.
The story is about a man who makes attempts to murder his blind mother and epileptic brother. The film has been praised for innovation and condemned for mockery of the family which is almost sacred in Italian culture.
I did not like the film for this reason.
The DVD contains interviews with director Marco Bellocchio, editor Silvano Agosti, actor Lou Castel, actor Paola Pitagora and film critic Tullio Kezich. The DVD also has a theatrical trailer and an afterward by Bernardo Bertolucci.
This film remains controversial and is not for everybody.
Still a Bombshell.......2006-05-13
Any film that managed to anger equally the Vatican and Luis Bu?uel must be worth checking out -- and FISTS IN THE POCKET had that distinction upon its initial release. Unlike many scandals of a previous day, however, this spare, beautifully made film has lost not one whit of its power to shock. Bellochio makes an impressive debut as writer/director here, and a marvelous cast, headed by Lou Castell, create a family of fools, freaks and monsters you won't soon forget. Brilliant cinematography, wonderful early score by Morricone (who'd think it possible to ring yet another change on the DIES IRAE?), and the expected sharp transfer and informative extras/liner notes from Criterion. Difficult, spiky and essential viewing for any fan of Italian cinema.

Not long on educational value but what fun to sit around and watch DC shred the drums for an hour. The David Garabaldi vid is much more educational. If any of you have not seen the Tower of Groove parts 1 and 2, I highly recommend it.
This is great. I recently watched this with a drummer friend and we just giggled at some of the crap he does.

Eleven-year-old Al Izuruha finds himself caught up in the escalating power struggle between the Earth Federal Forces and the space-based Duchy of Zeon. Mecha pilot Bernie Wiseman involves him in a Zeon plot to capture or destroy an experimental Gundam suit stored in his home colony. Al is torn between his new friendship with Bernie and his long-standing friendship with Federal Gundam pilot Christina MacKenzie. There's plenty of action and mecha battles in War in the Pocket, but the six-part OAV stresses the suffering war produces, rather than its glories. The final image has a power the more heroic Gundam adventures lack. Although it was released in 1989, War in the Pocket, follows The 08th MS Team (1996) in the main Gundam continuity. Suggested 13 Up: Considerable violence, alcohol and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

Unique take on war, and Gundam........2004-05-16
Taking place at the same time as "Mobile Suit Gundam" the OVA series "Gundam 0080" actually does not take place through a soilder's view, rather, it shows a kids prespective, and surprisngly, the show was Pro-Zeon. Meaning 0080 was probably the most original Gundam Series as of this time, Even though the show has a ton of action it mainly showcases the human side of war, as we watch Al's prespective of war change, it stops being a living cartoon to him and shows its true colors, Al learns that war is a hard and sad thing, and its interesting to watch. Al also showcases the usual kid habits of wanting to help out, wanting to feel important, Al is really a manifest of a lot of childish traits we all had growing up, which is what makes him an amazing charater. But the other characters are great too, they devolop amazingly, and after 6 episodes you begin to really care for them. The ending is really unexpected and sad, I almost cried while watching it, and thinking about it sends a shiver up to my spine.
Would I suguest Gundam 0080? Yes, very much. To fans of war drama, to mech anime fans, and to general people.

REFLECTIVE ANTI-WAR STATEMENT.......2004-02-07
As far as mecha anime shows go, this 6 part OVA is depicted from an original and thought provoking angle, that of 11 year old Al, a normal (if you can call living in a space colony normal) kid who loves playing soldiers, not caring for the political reasons for war, but playing at it from an innocent's point of view. On initial viewing of this series I was immediately impressed with the standard of the animation for a series made in 1989. The assault by the Zeon force on the Feddies on the ice pole is nothing short of stunning. While the mobile suit battles are few and far between, the story as a whole makes up for any real lack of action. I even played this for my fiancee who loathes anime, but is a teacher, and she felt a real emotional impact at the end of the series. I've watched this several times now,and it gets better on each viewing. I would like to see Sunrise continue with the Universal Century story line, the depth of which can only be matched by Gundams Western equivalent, Star Wars. Roll on Zeta!!!
A classic anti-war film.......2003-12-31
Seriously, 0080 reminds me of a foreign film. It's just so simple and poignant, and you're truly touched by it. It doesn't have a lot of action, but you fall in love with the characters. What's also incredible is that it shows the nice side of Zeon, and even an EF fan like myself can sympathize with the Zeeks.
If you can't get past the fact that the animation isn't shiny and mecha aren't constantly blowing each other up, then it's your own loss.
This is a great OVA series!.......2003-12-12
Gundam 0080 is a great OVA! It focuses alot on character devolpment and why war is bad.

Not your average Gundam fare.......2004-12-23
"Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket" is one small offering in the Gundam multiverse, and it's also my favorite. Rather than glorifying combat, the military, and war itself, which the majority of Gundam's ten TV series, ten (soon to be thirteen) theatrical movies, and four direct-to-video series do (sometimes inadvertently), these three episodes are the first half of what is definitely Gundam's greatest anti-war statement (and perhaps the greatest one in all anime).
"Gundam 0080" is not an action-flick disguised as Science Fiction, as better-known Gundam titles like "Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory", "Gundam Wing", or even "Gundam: The 08th MS Team" are. This show is completely character-driven, though when battles are depicted (this is Gundam, after all, so there are battles, they simply aren't the focus for a change) they are among the best planned and animated fight sequences in Gundam's 25 year history, and the five-minute opening battle is one few fans can forget. But the show has only four mobile suit battles in six episodes, so if all you want is Big Guns and flashy explosions, try "Gundam Wing", "Z Gundam", or "Gundam SEED".
Although released in 1989, "Gundam 0080" remains one of the finest sections of the Gundam multiverse. No prior knowledge of any Gundam series is needed to enjoy this series, though having seen the original "Mobile Suit Gundam" TV series or Movie Trilogy certainly helps. There are no direct tie-ins with other shows set in Gundam's original Universal Century setting, "Gundam 0080" is a stand-alone.
This DVD covers the first half of the series, introducing the 11-year-old protagonist Alfred, hapless Principality of Zeon pilot Bernie, and Al's recently returned grown-up next door neighbor Chris, who has come back to her home space colony on business for the Earth Federation. Also introduced are the members of the Cyclops Team, a crack Zeon special forces unit on a mission to destroy a new Mobile Suit being secretly tested in Al's colony.

As the story concludes, the Cyclops Team pinpoints the location of the testing facility for the new Gundam "Alex" and attempts to steal it while their own mobile suit creates a diversion, though they are unsuccessful, leading their superiors to form alternate plans of removing the new Gundam mobile suit from the war. Bernie, hiding from the Federation, tries to run away but is unable to leave his young friend Al at the mercy of his leaders, and decides to challenge the Gundam once again, this time in a jury-rigged Zaku. After his battle with the Gundam, his parting words to Al admonish him (and the viewers) not to hate the "enemy", because they are people just like everyone else.

This gorgeously packaged collector's set features three profiles of American musicians whose work has redefined jazz, rhythm & blues, and rock & roll from the award-winning, critically acclaimed PBS biography series. Includes: Ella Fitzgerald: Something to Live For; Quincy Jones: In The Pocket; Lou Reed: Rock & Roll Heart

If It Weren't for Lou Reed, This Would have Been Perfect.......2005-11-20
I love the American Masters series. I have a lot of them taped from TV. In my opinion, this boxed set of American Masters would have been perfect had they put somebody besides Lou Reed in the mix. After all, we're showcasing some of the finest African-American musicians here! There were American Masters programs done on Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, even Jessye Norman. It's as if PBS put together two shows people are going to want and added one that they couldn't get rid of otherwise. I took two stars away for that. I have both the Quincy Jones and the Ella Fitzgerald series on tape. I won't be upgrading to DVD just to get Lou Reed. In this case, it's best to buy separately, and buy used to save money.

Although it was released in 1989, the six-part OAV War in the Pocket follows The 08th MS Team (1996) in the main Gundam continuity. Al Izuruha is a normal 11-year-old living in the space colony Side 6 until the conflict between the Earth Federal Forces and the space-based Zeon regime erupts in a skirmish near his home. Al befriends Zeon mecha pilot Bernie Wiseman and helps him find a new model mobile suit concealed at a secret Federal base. The first three episodes (out of six total) play as a fairly innocent fantasy: a boy who dreams of becoming mecha pilot gets to meet one. But the filmmakers are quietly sowing the seeds of a tragedy: unbeknownst to Al, Christina MacKenzie, his other adult friend, is an ace mobile suit pilot for the Federal Forces.
