Classic Musicals from the Dream Factory is a five-film collection of enjoyable but not-quite-top-tier movies from MGM's peak period between the mid-1940s and mid-'50s. The best films are the two with Gene Kelly. In Summer Stock (1950), he teams with Judy Garland in a traditional "let's put on a show" setting. Garland was in her last MGM film, but she shares a tap duel with Kelly and performs one of her most famous routines, "Get Happy" in a black jacket and fedora. It's Always Fair Weather (1955) features Kelly alongside Dan Dailey and Michael Kidd as three GIs who return from the war, a plot reminiscent of On the Town, another Kelly collaboration with Stanley Donen. The songs aren't much, but highlights include the three GIs' trash-can-lid dance, Cyd Charisse's solo supported by a crew of boxers, and Kelly's number on roller skates, "I Like Myself." Ziegfeld Follies (1946) follows the format of a revue, with a wisp of a plot (producer Florenz Ziegfeld is in heaven imagining his dream revue; he's played by William Powell, who had played the character 10 years earlier in The Great Ziegfeld) and a bunch of diverse musical numbers: Fred Astaire's dances with Charisse, Lucille Bremer, and Gene Kelly (their only screen collaboration till That's Entertainment II in 1976); a water number with Esther Williams; and songs by Judy Garland, Lena Horne, and Kathryn Grayson. Also following the revue format is Till the Clouds Roll By (1946), which features famous performances by Frank Sinatra ("Ol' Man River"), Lena Horne ("Can't Help Lovin' That Man"), and Judy Garland ("Look for the Silver Lining"). Interspersed among the numbers is a lackluster biography of songwriter Jerome Kern. For a more traditional songwriter biography, try Three Little Words (1950), starring Astaire and Red Skelton as Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby, respectively, whose Tin Pan Alley and Broadway songs include "Who's Sorry Now," "My Sunny Tennessee," "I Wanna Be Loved by You," and the title tune. Vera-Ellen is an excellent partner for Astaire, and a young Debbie Reynolds appears as Boop-a-Doop girl Helen Kane.
All the discs are supplemented by new featurettes and classic shorts and cartoons. Deserving special mention is Till the Clouds Roll By, which has been available for years on inferior public-domain DVDs. This version has the best picture by far, and also offers musical outtakes by Judy Garland and Kathryn Grayson. --David Horiuchi

Great Movies.......2007-05-14
Terrific prices. Wonderful musicals.
Good response. Prompt delivery. Excellent condition.
Perfect, but not quite.......2006-05-31
It is wonderful to see these films finally being released on DVD! The prints are bright, colorful and clean and the soundtracks are sound better than ever. The films themselves are a treasure without any added attractions. However, since so much emphasis is put on special features, let me say that they aren't what they could be for these movies. Consider what the "Zeigfeld Follies" laser disc offered in the way of extras. There is a great deal of original pre-recorded music available from that film, so why not include more or all of it? One disturbing trend I noticed on the short documentaries is a change in the ratio of the screen image. After all of the talk about restoration and letterbox, why show clips in wide screen when the original films were not produced in wide screen. The presentation and restoration of classic films has become so much more important to viewers over the past two decades. Let's don't take steps backwards.
What a deal.......2006-04-26
Although this has been called a mixed bag by some, for the price, you just can't go wrong. Judy & Gene doing the "Portland Fancy" and Judy singing "Get Happy" from "Summer Stock"; Lena Horne singing numbers from "Show Boat," the musical she should have been in; Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire doing their only real on-screen duet in "Ziegfeld Follies" (they pretty much just walked through "That's Entertainment 2"); all these priceless musical numbers must be seen to be believed, all in glowing and restored technicolor. Lots of fun extras as well.
a great bunch of films AND DVDs!!!.......2006-04-03
I was lucky enough to preview this set recently and am happy to report that the other folks expecting WB's normal fine print quality will not be dissapointed...they look wonderful. As is the custom at WB there are many extras on each DVD as well. Others have listed them...outakes, vintage clips and featurettes...so I won't re-list those but comment on the new 15 minute featurettes on each film. Well, unlike the dissapointing (IMHO) Busby Berkely bonus featurettes..these are well made, informative and VERY entertaining...probably due to the much higher quality of interviewees....like the ever present Garland expert John Fricke. Current sizzling hot Broadway choreographer and director Casey Nicholaw, who lends his expertise on Summer Stock and It's always fair weather. Susan Stroman , director of the recent movie "The Producers, ads a fresh take on It's always fair weather as well.
The absolute gem (again IMHO) however is the Oscar and Grammy winning songwriter of Mary Poppins, Chitty, Chitty Bang Bang and so many more Richard M Sherman. Mr Sherman's thoughts about Jerome Kern (Till the Clouds Roll By) and Kalmar & Ruby (Three Little Words)go much further than the normal "college professors" on other DVDs. As those two movies are about songwriters...who better than one of the all time greats to comment and frankly he seems to be much more than a hired gun , but an actual fan of these writers and very familiar with their work, lives and the movies in question...raising the bar substantially due to his participation.

Hollywood's 1940s craze for composer biographies did not yield many masterpieces, and Till the Clouds Roll By is one of the weaker efforts in the bunch. Robert Walker tries gamely to suggest the decency of Jerome Kern but is defeated by a sluggish story line pairing him with a crotchety mentor (Van Heflin). As a collection of freestanding production numbers devoted to Kern's songs, however, the movie has appeal. It begins with almost 20 minutes of Showboat (including Lena Horne's plaintive reading of "Can't Help Lovin' That Man") and the hits just keep on coming. Judy Garland, who appears in a few scenes as stage star Marilyn Miller, contributes "Look for the Silver Lining" and a Gatsby-esque production number on "Who?" Her songs were staged by then-hubby Vincente Minnelli. Other highlights include a young Angela Lansbury, still with baby fat, singing "How'd You Like to Spoon with Me?" Lucille Bremer, a leggy starlet who never quite caught on, plays Kern's protégé. She spins a delightful duet with Van Johnson on "I Won't Dance," two redheads capering with gusto. It all ends with another splashy theatrical montage, climaxing in Frank Sinatra's take on "Ol' Man River." That might sound like a strange idea, but Ol' Blue Eyes clearly loves the song (he would return to it often in his career) and is in beautiful voice. Despite being a lavish MGM production, Till the Clouds fell out of copyright and into the public domain, so print quality (and even running time) can be variable. --Robert Horton

More Stars Than in Heaven.......2007-07-24
Till the Clouds Roll By is a musical biopic about Jerome Kern (Robert Walker), the musician behind many successful shows like Sally, Sunny, and Showboat. It follows his career with his friend James Hessler (Van Helfin) and Hessler's daughter Sally (Lucille Bremer).
The film plot isn't too exciting, and only a few of the songs have become major standards over the years, like "Ol' Man River" and "A Fine Romance". For most viewers, many of the songs will be unknowns. "Leave it To Jane," "I Won't Dance," and "Cleopatterer" are all fun numbers, but audiences won't find themselves singing along.
The big attraction to this film is the outstanding cast. There are several cameos by major stars like Kathryn Grayson, Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Van Johnson, June Allyson, the Wilde twins, Frank Sinatra, and more. None of their parts are significant, other than hearing them sing (except for Garland who plays Marilyn Miller). Thus, it is difficult to comment on their talents, because only those musical are displayed.
Overall, the movie is interesting as a musical, but not for the story.
"A lovely old film".......2007-06-14
This is an oldie, with lot of songs by Jerome Kern; I loved it, and bought a copy for my mother.
Cult classic.......2007-06-13
To be blunt, this is the worst musical MGM ever released. The script is extraordinarily weak; try counting the cliches. The casting was poor. And only a few of the star-studded musical numbers are successful. Tony Martin, Dinah Shore, Lena Horne, and Frank Sinatra were all at their peak of their vocal powers, of course, and they do well. Judy Garland's numbers are acceptable, although you can tell that she was starting to come unglued. But beyond that, all is embarrassment. And nothing is believable. Indeed, this film should be a cult classic, shown at midnight with the audience throwing things at the screen during particularly awful melodramatic moments and dancing in the aisles during the June Allyson numbers. Torture can be fun.
What was the studio thinking........2007-03-15
Some don't care for this movie as it wasn't completely true to Jerome Kerns life, but I love it for the great musical numbers many of which are big production numbers. HOWEVER, I don't know what the studio was thinking when they let this into the public domain. This copy looks as though someone filmed it from the only decent copy which I have on laser disc. I wish the studio could put out a quality copy.

Poor picture quality........2006-03-07
The quality of the picture was poor. It looks as if was shot in 8 mm & then blown up to 35 mm .
Not that Fiesta but.......2006-02-09
No, it's not the Ricardo Montalban Fiesta made in 1947 but the Hal Roach 1942 "five reeler" (longer than a "short" but shorter than a movie at 44 minutes). However, it's the only English-language film starring the Mexican megastar and singing icon Jorge Negrete (here billed as George Negrete). For fans of Mexican film history, well worth the price for this part alone.
Three classic musicals.......2005-06-18
1) Royal Wedding is famous for Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling.
2) Till Clouds Roll By is worth it for the all star cast
and is a biography of a great musical playwrite/ composer Jerome Kern
3) Fiesta is a musical with both original Mexican music and dance
Worth buying at this price for "Clouds" alone!
FIESTA AKA DOWN UNDER AS NEPTUNE'S DAUGHTER.......2005-05-11

Fiesta.......2005-01-16
I found the same error as one of your other reviewers. I have been wanting to get FIESTA 1947 starring Esther William and Ricardo Montalban, but the Fiesta on this video is not the one. It is a mexican story, has nothing to do with the FIESTA I would like to have. I have also noted on IMDB that they are showing the 1947 as the film which is on this Great Musical Classics. i will try to contact them as they are showing the one I want as available on Amazon.Ca and Amazon.com, available on DVD, but it is the Great Musical Classics they show. I am really disapointed in this.

Description
Musical biography of songwriter, Jerome Kern. Kern tries to make it in New York but is turned down, so he moves to London, where he makes enough contacts to successfully return to New York, first composing for a smaller theatre, and eventually the Broadway musical blockbuster "Show Boat." Judy Garland's, Frank Sinatra's and Angela Lansbury's songs are among the highlights, plus a mini production of "Show Boat."
