Two distinct portraits of Chuck Berry emerge in this lavish four-disc set built around Hail! Hail! Rock n' Roll, director Taylor Hackford's 1986 documentary/concert film. On one side there's the Berry who wrote a catalogue's worth of genre-defining songs ("Maybellene," "Johnny B. Goode," "Roll Over Beethoven," and so many others), all of them filled with wit, delightful stories, and poetry. He's also the guitarist who virtually patented many of rock's seminal licks, and the showman who attracted some top musicians to celebrate his 60th birthday with a concert in St. Louis, his hometown. On the other hand, there's the Berry who, in the course of the film as well as the accompanying bonus material, emerges as a prickly cheapskate who drove the filmmakers and musicians nuts with his absurd demands and unpredictable behavior. Together they make a fascinating look at the guy who justifiably calls himself "the father of rock 'n' roll."
Hackford's original film, now issued with a crisp, anamorphic transfer and digital sound, occupies Disc One. A parade of classics are heard during the climactic concert, performed by Berry and a superb band (led by Keith Richards and featuring guitarist Robert Cray and Johnny Johnson, Berry's original pianist, among others), with guest shots by Eric Clapton (smoking on the slow blues "Wee Wee Hours"), Etta James, Linda Ronstadt, and Julian Lennon (whose dad was an unabashed Berry fan). There are revealing offstage glimpses, too, like Berry confessing that he only took up music full-time because there was more money in it than in housepainting, or a weary, wasted Richards admitting that "I was mad to take the gig" but gamely standing up to his idol at every turn (watch for a memorable moment during the very first song of the concert, when Chuck attempts to change key in mid-tune and Keith sternly shakes him off).
The three discs of bonus features add a lot more to the portrait. Much of it is terrific: A nostalgic Berry poring over his scrapbook with Robbie Robertson of the Band; some lengthy rehearsal jams with Clapton, Richards, and James; hours (literally) of convivial conversation with Little Richard, Bo Diddley, and other rock pioneers. But if you're the type who can't turn away from car wrecks, don't miss "The Reluctant Movie Star," an hour-long "making of" documentary, for it's here that Hackford and the others who worked on the film tell their war stories. The Chuck Berry they know demanded to be paid every day, in cash, or he'd refuse to be filmed. He showed up for a dinner meeting at L.A.'s posh Le Dome with a bag of McDonald's takeout. And two days before the St. Louis concert, he announced that he was leaving town for a gig in Ohio, where he proceeded to blow out his voice--so his vocals all had to be overdubbed after the fact (an extra payday, natch). Hail! Hail! Rock n' Roll was already an entertaining two hours. But the various extra material, none of it seen before and all of it introduced by Hackford, makes this "ultimate collector's addition" a must-have. --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews:
Chuck Berry a great - and trouble.......2007-09-07
This concert was put on to celebrate Chuck Berry's 60th birthday in 1986 and the show itself is marvellous. There is a parade of special guests including Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Etta James, Julian Lennon and Linda Ronstadt. Not to mention Chuck Berry's longtime Piano player Johnny Johnson and a few other well known musicians (Chuck Lavell for example). The renditions of the Chuck Berry songs are great and virtually all the classics are performed. Keith Richards who was the musical director for the show, has the best moment in the concert when Chuck (in the middle of a song) says lets change key. Keith tells Chuck in no uncertain terms its not going to happen!
However what makes this film so special is what we learn about Chuck Berry the man, rather than the musician. Throughout the film stories are told, and confirmed by Chuck himself of his refusal to play a gig unless he is paid in cash. In fact he also refused to take part in any of the documentary scenes unless he was paid in cash each day. There are scenes with the film crew waiting on day 1 of the shoot and no Chuck because no cash! Theres a whole load of marvellous stories involving among others Bruce Springsteen (who with an early incarnation of the E Street band used to back Chuck) and Jerry Lee Lewis.
The bonus disc is equally good with a lot of great rehearsal material featuring most of the artists mentioned above. These were done with multiple cameras so the DVD has a multi-screen format and you can choose to watch all the views on a split screen or select one and focus on a particular musician.
Note there is also a 4 DVD version as well - worth considering!
Portrait of the Artist as an Old Man.......2007-08-31
It's pretty safe to say that Chuck Berry is the single most influential figure in the history of rock 'n' roll. Wait, scotch that. This is Amazon. Someone is sure to stump for Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Bjork, Bono, or Thom Yorke. Losers...
Any self-respecting guitarist gets angry as hell if someone else messes with his or her amplifier settings without permission. And Chuck Berry has self-respect, hence the shouting match with Keith Richards while rehearsing for Chuck's 60th birthday tribute concert. And he's right, but would this film have gotten financing without the "Last Waltz"-style presence of Richards (who put the backing band together), Eric Clapton, and other contemporary stars? Clapton tears up the house with his take on "Wee Wee Hours" and Etta James practically steals the picture with her version of "Rock and Roll Music."
One reason why there's never a dull moment here is that all of the conflicts are laid out right in front of you, particularly in the bonus interviews with the film's makers, including director Taylor Hackford and producer Stephanie Bennett, still shaking their heads 20 years later over a near-disastrous visit to the prison where Berry cooled his heels and still occasionally visits to entertain the inmates, his daily attempts to renegotiate the terms of his contract, and his insistence at receiving cash for everything up front.
Some of the film's interview subjects give long-winded, ill-conceived "explanations" of the origins of Berry's music, but not Little Richard. While you can't receive an Oscar for "Best Interview in a Music Documentary," he certainly deserves one. Also revealed is Berry's bull-dogged determination to do things his way, including checking his guitar like so much baggage at airports, eliminating the cost of an entourage by having promoters arrange a pick-up band for him at each concert (including a still pied-eyed Bruce Springsteen back in the day in Jersey), and carrying around all of that up-front cash in a paper bag or his briefcase. And let's not forget the 70's style polyester leisure suits, replete with flared trousers, which he still somehow manages to make look cool. But the most poignant interview subject is Berry himself, delivering the film's most thoughtful and insightful comments despite his flat-out refusal to discuss personal matters (such as jail).
The concert sequences shine, primarily due to the talent Richards put together alongside himself; the house band of guitarist Robert Cray, drummer Steve Jordan, bassist Joey Spaminato (NRBQ), organist Chuck Leavell, and a real coup - piano hotshot and longtime Berry collaborator Johnny Johnson, who plays like a man possessed at an age when most are sleeping off dinner in front of "Wheel of Fortune."
But the real draw here is, of course, the sheer poetry of Berry's timeless body of work. As Jerry Lee Lewis so eloquently drawls, "He's the Hank Williams of rock 'n' roll."
I can't top that.
hail hail chuck.......2007-07-13
this is a timeless classic. chuck berry is quite possibly the true father of rock and roll as we now know it. this movie not only shows the famous 60th birthday concert, but also includes tons of extra footage including commentary and performances by keith richards, eric clapton, and many more.
the rock and roll at their best.......2007-07-10
this was the most incredible experience getting this fellows enchanting the audience with pure rock and roll I did never see this form of art at the sane way ever.I just love it!!!!!Hail Hail rock and roll!!!!!!!!
Oh yes oh yes oh yes.......2007-07-06
This thing is great! From the basics, from the intro by the director, laying the foundation for the film, from the rehearsal scenes showing Chuck arguing with Keith Richards, all the way to the final concert scenes. This thing burns! If you love rock n roll you will love this DVD. The CD that comes with it is very good too. A good investment overall.

For all the legitimate complaints about overexcited tempos and rushed- over subtleties that were brought against Georg Solti, the fact remains he had few peers who could generate the same sizzling energy he took for granted. These two 1992 performances, recorded with the Bavarian Radio Symphonic Orchestra, ably demonstrate that Solti's driving manner was, despite the claims of his detractors, wedded to a superb attention to the music. Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 ("Italian") receives a delightful reading; Solti and the Bavarians sprint through the score in rousing fashion, yet remain always alert to the gentle flow that underpins such speed. The warm call of the horns in the third movement, in particular, are neither rushed nor overlooked.
The same qualities that make for a spirited Mendelssohn contribute to a nearly overwhelming version of Shostakovich's tragic, often manic 10th. Solti came to conduct the music of Shostakovich only late in life; and while he never became a definitive interpreter of the composer, his take on the 20th-century's greatest symphonist is definitely worth hearing. The first movement, rising grimly from mordancy to terror, is rendered with chilling persistence, though perhaps a touch too much impatience. But that's precisely the quality that makes for a hair-raising rendition of the second-movement Allegro, a frantic burst of furious scurrying that practically cries out for the Solti treatment. The remainder plays out with the passion and intensity that one would expect from watching Solti at the podium, his eight decades belied by abrupt, kinetic gestures and a singularly penetrating gaze as he drives his musicians ever harder, ever faster, ever onward. --Bruce Reid
Description
One of the world's greatest conductors interprets two classic symphonies. In a live recording from the Philharmonie concert hall of the Gasteig-Kulturzentrum in Munich, Sir Georg Solti conducts the Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 in A Op. 90, a piece first performed in London in 1934. This is followed by Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 in E minor Op. 93, a work widely considered to be the finest and deepest of the composer's 15 symphonies. 86 minutes.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent playing, photography, and sound.......2007-04-10
I own a different release of this concert which pairs it with Shostakovich's 9th, and as such I cannot rate the Mendelssohn. However, the Shostakovich is gripping, done with a mostly good sense of tempo throughout with excellent playing from the players.
The video is very well done, with cleverly shot solos. The camera pans out for the many tutti sections of the hair-raising Scherzo, just as it should, and the various shots of Solti are quite interesting to see.
There are a few problems...the first being that the first movement is slightly too fast at the climaxes, even though it is convincing. I just don't feel enough weight sometimes, which is a questionable thing to do to
a dark symphony, I think.
True, Solti is not a name often paired with Shostakovich. I have heard that Pavel Kogan's 10th on DVD beats this one, but even if that is so, this is a great DVD, if the reviews on the Mendelssohn are to be trusted.

In this fascinating series of films, Sounds Magnificent: The Story of the Symphony, Andre Previn conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in some of the most popular works from the concert repertoire--symphonies by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. Each program is introduced by Andre Previn, who discusses the piece to be performed and the lives of the composers who created these masterpieces by giving illustrations of aspects of their music with a variety of orchestral excerpts. Image Entertainment is proud to bring you the first in this series: Brahms's Symphony No. 4. 86 minutes.
Customer Reviews:
Absolute Brahms Understood.......2005-08-14
This installment of the series "Sounds Magnificent:The Story of the Symphony" is disarming in the way it clarifies the understanding and enjoyment of an apparenty dense incomprehensible composition.
Mr. Previn's commentary and musical examples go a very long way to help one understand this masterpiece and actually enjoy it passionately. It's not brilliant in the way Tchaikovsky can be, but it is brilliant in an exhilarating way that one can really appreciate. Even if the sound of Brahms can be falsely and superficially perceived as ponderous and dark. But one comes to the conslusion that it is the inevitable way the piece could have been composed. A magnificent, grand piece, with musical food for repeated enjoyment and discovery. Not, by the way, a "confessional" about Brahms' feelings about life, but rather a masterly inspired incursion into genial development of pure musical ideas.
The orchestra plays with gusto. Mr. Previn conducts in a way that makes the musical development very clear and obvious. The camera helps to illuminate many musical phrases. The sound is completely up to audiophile standards. A notable way to enjoy and understand this true masterpiece.
"He could never rise above mediocrity".......2002-09-19
At least thats what critic George Bernard Shaw thought of Brahms.
In fact Brahms has received more than his fair share of criticism as you'll discover in the amusing commentary by Previn.
Yet a shroud of mystery continues to surround his method of composition that many lovers of his music can't quite put their finger on. In one sense Brahms extends traditional classical techniques in simple ways thus restricting his expression within a narrow framework; in another sense his powers of invention within this narrow framework are so grand that it destroys any preconception of what classical music was supposed to sound like as defined by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. He is able to completely define his own unique distinctive tone of voice but should we respect the almost comical application of hungarian rondo's, for example? That is the question. In some eyes he was a genius, in others like GBS he merely strung together a collection of popular dance tunes.
Previn's dissection of Brahms symphony no. 4 helps the listener understand why his music is so alluring...so durable. From the opening see-sawing of the violins to the magnificent undercurrent of lower strings it really opens your eyes as to the cleverness of Brahms.
Previn may not totally convince you GBS was a fool, but he surely does present convincing evidence that Schumann was not one in "praising him [Brahms] to the sky".
A critic once said of Brahms music: "The private thoughts of a clever man". I, for one, am eternally grateful for his sharing of those private thoughts.
Brahms symphonic thought revealed.......2000-06-16
I had great expectations about this video for several reasons: firstly I think that Andre' Previn is truly one of the most gifted conductors of our era. His eclectic repertoire is never "business as usual", and there's a lot to admire in a conductor that can handle Rachmaninov and Shostakovich with equal mastery. Also, I had expectations about Previn as a presenter, because I knew that, at the peak of his extraordinary tenure with the LSO in the 60's, he and the orchestra had a TV show where they explained and performed the classics. Unluckily they were never aired here, but now there's this 6-part BBC series from the early 80's that I judge, from this first purchase, highly rewarding. The video is pretty generous in length, basically you get 45 min. of explanation and then a whole performance of the 4th symphony (a pretty good one, too, even if the 1984 RPO was just at the beginning of their Previn era after a bad period). The spoken part, after a nice introduction about Brahms and his troubled relations with his contemporaries, focuses on passages from the first and last movement of the symphony. This is really good : Previn seems a very amiable person, and he explains in an entertaining yet authoritative way, with no snobbery at all. Also, and this is for international customers, his English is wonderfully pleasant to hear and very clear, you'll have no problems. The different orchestral parts in the most famous passages are played at first each one apart from the others, then they put them all together, as we are used to hear. The results are striking: the splendid balance between awesome technique and sheer Romantic expressiveness that makes Brahms so special is finally clear to me in a way that no book could ever do. Probably it's different if you can read music, but this is not my case. The picture quality and the direction are very good if a bit plain and the sound is a more than acceptable analog stereo, with some background hiss. A smiling final note: the first moments require a bit of "adjustment" to the early 80's look of everyone involved ( Previn's glasses and everybody's hairstyle !). Real fun (and a lot of memories..)

Book Description
The urge towards the optic is arguably being felt increasingly in all media; music is no exception, as Images 4 Music demonstrates. Whether the results are spontaneous, derivative, algorithmic, abstract, poetic, or simply arbitrary, visual artists and computer geeks have been joining together with noise creators in a cooperative spirit, achieving greater results than any individual could solo. Such is the case with this experimental production by an interdisciplinary range of collaborators. Images 4 Music, performed live at Ars Electronica 2004 and studio-mixed to perfection here, articulates different interpretations of two works, one by each of these vanguard composers. Philip Glass's Les Enfants Terribles and Steve Reich's Piano Phase are reworked by Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa on two pianos. Added to this are layered multiple visual components, from Casey Reas' indefinite flux of rounded and out-of-focus forms to Norbert Pfaffenbichler and Lotte Schreiber's kinetic, grey, two-channel video. Dietmar Offenhuber orchestrates scenes of commuters moving among urban architecture, the Poetry Loom adds a wash of concrete poetry, and Martin Wattemberg provides a film of liquid kaleidoscopic distortions. Altogether, this unpredictable melange of new media artists and musicians definitively breaks with the traditional focus on the musical performer. Here that focus shifts away from the singular virtuoso to the relationship that exists between a team of diversely talented practitioners who together push the potential of a contemporary hybrid audio/visual language.

Description
One of the greats of classical music, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart astounded audiences with his breathtaking talent since he began to compose music at the age of 5. His most prominent operas were beloved for not only their beautiful music, but also for their humor and highly entertaining plots and characters.
* The Magic Flute: Intertwining music of awesome purity and beauty with the conventions of musical comedy, this delightful fairy tale continues to delight music lover's generation after generation. This production from Sweden's Drottningholm Court Theatre, one of the few surviving 18th century theaters, is conducted by the famed Arnold Ostman and performed on authentic period instruments.
* Le Nozze di Figaro: First performed to resounding success in 1786, this scandalous tale of a humble barber challenging the royal court remains one of the most popular and frequently performed works in operatic repertoire. Under the guidance of Arnold Ostman, the elegant surroundings of the Drottningholm Court Theatre and the intimate size of the stage recreate the atmosphere of opera in Mozart's time.
* Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail: Mozart caused a sensation in Vienna with this light-hearted comic opera about two noble ladies sold by pirates to a Turkish pasha. A sensual and resoundingly contemporary experience from the world-famous Salzburg Festival, this inventive interpretation casts new light on a classic musical work.
* La Clemenza di Tito: This masterpiece is based on incidents in the life of the Roman emperor Titus. The elegant staging for the Glyndebourne Festival Opera sets the scene for this compelling story of passion that overrides loyalty and integrity that is tested to its limit.

This DVD release is a strange phenomenon. The point of the DVD seems to be a trail run by Ars Electronica through the auspices of Harmonia Mundi to present visuals of the music by Philip Glass and Steve Reich before the CD of this two piano four hands arrangement of Glass' opera 'Les Enfants Terribles' and Reich's 'Piano Phase' is released.
Whatever the justification this DVD proves to be an interesting introduction to Glass' music in particular. All manner of images are rendered including the pure electronic art of Dietmar Offenhuber, Norbert Pfaffenbichler, Lotte Schreiber, Casey Reas, and Martin Wattenberg. The wonderful music is performed by Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa. For those unfamiliar with the Glass chamber opera this is a fine introduction.
For classical music lovers who are finding the more frequent use of video and electronic visual aids (like in the immensely popular 'Tristan und Isolde' production from the LA Phil with Bill Viola's videos, Peter Sellars, direction, Esa-Pekka Salonen's conducting) exciting, this is a fascinating experience and one that will possibly gradually make a noise in the market place. Imagine an opera's sets on a DVD that could be projected on any stage in the world? Curiouser and curiouser....Grady Harp, October 05

this dvd records the four hand version of glass' recent opera L'enfants terrible played by davies and will soon be released as a CD. The dvd shows visuals during performance which are nice, but not necessary.
for those interested in 4 hand piano music and philip glass this is a real treat. warning: the DVD does not play in car dvd players and the active side of the disc is not marked.

Not for you if you are looking for *un-interrupted* videos.......2006-03-16
I don't know what it is about people who produce these compilations. They seem to be convinced that us video music fans simply prefer to have people TALKING ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE VIDEOS!
I bought this thinking the interviews were separate from the videos and for about 6.00 used, how could anyone go wrong?
In short, if you are looking for the actual, complete, *un-interrupted* videos (or interviews) from these artists, save your money.
AMAZON - PLEASE TAKE GREATER TIME IN MAKING THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN "VIDEO COMPILATION" AND "VIDEO DOCUMENTARY" - COULDA SAVED ME A LOT OF MONEY!!!!
I've got an idea, how about a separate section for interviews??? - Ya think these discs might actually sell???
