This film tells the story of his life, and presents a string of extraordinary songs, performers, and performances along the way. Lunsford is on the road for most of the film, introducing great backcountry musicians to the filmmakers. The film includes music (including Mountain Dew, which Lundsford wrote), clog and square dancing never before seen and archival footage from Southern Mountains musicians, as well as some Bluegrass and Mountain music legends. People like Obray Ramsey (banjo), Artus Moser, Mike Seeger, Alan Lomax, Tommy Hunter (fiddle), Roger Sprung (banjo), " Red" Raper, Ray Lundsford and many others.Lunsford hated the stereotype of Appalachian mountain music that was promulgated in the press and on TV. He spent his life fighting the prejustice by hunting down the songs, dances and unknown performers of the Appalachian region. His successful attempts to bring dignity to " hillbilly music" made him a folk hero. He recorded 1000's of mountain songs for the Smithsonian. In the summer of 1928 he created Bluegrass Festivals, by founding his first Asheville Mountain Dance and Folk Festival and it succeed beyond his wildest dreams.
