Groundbreaking on several counts, not the least of which was an innovative use of animation and stereophonic sound, this ambitious Disney feature has lost nothing to time since its release in 1940. Classical music was interpreted by Disney animators, resulting in surreal fantasy and playful escapism. Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra provided the music for eight segments by the composers Tchaikovsky, Moussorgsky, Stravinsky, Beethoven, Ponchielli, Bach, Dukas, and Schubert. Not all the sequences were created equally, but a few are simply glorious, such as "Night on Bald Mountain," "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," and "The Nutcracker Suite." The animation ranges from subtly delicate to fiercely bold. The screen bursts with color and action as creatures transmute and convention is thrust aside. The painstaking detail and saturated hues are unique to this film, unmatched even by more advanced technology. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Disney Movie Ever!.......2007-07-19

I loved this movie as a child and it still holds my interest today. Its a wonderful masterpiece of music and animation. I am disappointed its not the actual "uncut" movie (see other reviewers reviews), but its still a great movie.

4 out of 5 stars fantasia.......2007-07-17

The Fantasia vhs movie played as good as new. It has been and will continue to be a family favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasia is fantastic...........2007-07-15

I had the pleasure of seeing FANTASIA on the big screen, when I was a little girl. I was enchanted by the imagery and the beautiful classical music soundtrack, from the opening credits, all the way to the last sequence. This was Walt Disney's way of bringing classical music to the younger generations, the children who went to the movie theaters to see his cartoons. This presentation of cartoons with classical repertoire succeeds brilliantly on many levels. For starters, the imagery compliments the mood of the musical pieces.

Some of my favorite sequences include: Nutcracker Suite by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky with a look at the changing seasons, featuring animated fairies, fish, flowers, mushrooms, and leaves, Symphony No. 6 by Ludwig van Beethoven with a mythical ancient Grecian world of centaurs, centaurettes (a Disney studio creation), a pegasus and his family, the gods of Mount Olympus, fauns, cherubs and other creatures and characters of classical mythology, and the Ave Maria by Franz Schubert, with subtle sunlight and naturalistic color. I should mention that the sequence with Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Mussorgsky is a vision of hell. It features a wicked demon, whose likeness was based on the features of Bela Lugosi (yes, the original Dracula in the 1930s films). I was pretty scared, as an eight year old, when watching it. Keep that in mind when watching it with really small children.

My verdict? This film is a beautiful introduction to classical music, for young viewers, and compelling enough for more mature ones. This is a throwback to another time, before the age of computer-generated graphics, and you will appreciate the great lengths the animators took to hand-draw every cell in this beautiful film.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-04-04

While it is not plot based or known for a memorable and charming story, it is a wonder to watch. Music creates images in most of us, whether they be memories of something prior, or something conjured up from the sound. Fantasia is based on that idea. Listening to this classic music, set to such elegant and wonderful images is a treat. One of the best of it's kind. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A child's memories.......2007-03-09

This is the first movie I remember seeing as a child. I was probably about 7 years old at the time. I've never forgotten it, and now, after 59 years, I'm viewing it again. It's just as wonderful as it was when I saw it the first time, although there are a couple of "bits" that I don't remember from my first viewing. It keeps me company during my treadmill walks. It does a wonderful job of helping me to pass the time. It's a beautiful combination of art and classical music.

Kevin Smith is a conundrum of a filmmaker: he's a writer with brilliant, clever ideas who can't set up a simple shot to save his life. It was fine back when Smith was making low-budget films like Clerks and Chasing Amy, both of which had an amiable, grungy feel to them, but now that he's a rising director who's attracting top talent and tackling bigger themes, it might behoove him to polish his filmmaking. That's the main problem with Dogma--it's an ambitious, funny, aggressively intelligent film about modern-day religion, but while Smith's writing has matured significantly (anyone who thinks he's not topnotch should take a look at Chasing Amy), his direction hasn't. It's too bad, because Dogma is ripe for near-classic status in its theological satire, which is hardly as blasphemous as the protests that greeted the movie would lead you to believe.

Two banished angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) have discovered a loophole that would allow them back into heaven; problem is, they'd destroy civilization in the process by proving God fallible. It's up to Bethany (Linda Fiorentino), a lapsed Catholic who works in an abortion clinic, to save the day, with some help from two so-called prophets (Smith and Jason Mewes, as their perennial characters Jay and Silent Bob), the heretofore unknown 13th apostle (Chris Rock), and a sexy, heavenly muse (the sublime Salma Hayek, who almost single-handedly steals the film). In some ways Dogma is a shaggy dog of a road movie--which hits a comic peak when Affleck and Fiorentino banter drunkenly on a train to New Jersey, not realizing they're mortal enemies--and segues into a comedy-action flick as the vengeful angels (who have a taste for blood) try to make their way into heaven. Smith's cast is exceptional--with Fiorentino lending a sardonic gravity to the proceedings, and Jason Lee smirking evilly as the horned devil Azrael--and the film shuffles good-naturedly to its climax (featuring Alanis Morissette as a beatifically silent God), but it just looks so unrelentingly... subpar. Credit Smith with being a daring writer but a less-than-stellar director. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars buddy christ.......2007-09-13

the plot of dogma is fairly simple. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are angels who were cast out of heaven and forced to live on earth. they discovered a loop hole in catholic doctorine which wold allow them to get back into heaven. thus proving that god is not infallible and undoing all existance. its up to Betty Aberlin, the last descendant of christ to stop them.

over the course of her adventure, our heroine comes across all kinds of characters. the 13th apostle played by Chris Rock, 2 prophets (Jay and Silent Bob) this demon played by Jason Lee, the voice of god played by Alan Rickman, and some others. Dogma has some of the best scenes involving Jay and Silent Bob of any of Smith's films. "GEAR?!"

Kevin Smith got a lot of heat for this movie. during production, he got multiple threats of violence, 2 of them death. religious fanatics... eh.

BONUS FEATURES:

Complete Set of Storyboards from Three Major Scenes
100 Minutes of Deleted Scenes with View Askew Crew Intros
Cast and Crew Outtakes
Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash Spot
Talent Files

like ive said before, i really couldnt pick one of his movies above the rest, but if you havent seen any of the "Jersey Chronicles" Dogma isnt a bad start.

5 out of 5 stars It's got the goods.......2007-07-16

If you plan on having a good laugh at a different kind of comedy, this movie is GREAT for you. It is a long movie, but the interactions between the usual kevin smith cast is hilarious. Being one of my favorite movies, my friends and i end up quoting it all the time.

I must admit the comments on this page are ALMOST as funny as the movie... "it's preachy"... "the storyline is unbelievable"..."they talk too much". I'm sorry, but if you've ever gone to see a kevin smith movie its always about the dialogue and character interactions, not the plot. Come on, some of you are acting like you expected it to be Schindler's List or something. If you want to analyze how acurately it portrays life and blah blah blah... then you have shouldn't even bother because then there would be just another review from a person who doesn't have a sense of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Theologically Sound!.......2007-07-01

I love thought provoking comedies. You certainly do not have to be Catholic (in any form..lapsed, practicing, whatever) to get the most out of this movie but it does help. The film abounds with intelligent, provocative dialogue spoken by excellent actors. And it's hysterical!
It takes a skilled director/writer to construct a movie that can make you laugh AND think.
A previous reviewer suggested that the characters are all annoying. I have to disagree. The characters are well rounded. They are all fleshed out by tremendous actors. The performances are believable.
It has also been suggested that this film is irreverent. Well, possibly, but a little irreverence is what makes most smart comedies fly.
Have fun with this movie. Watch and listen to it's keen perception of religion and faith. But most of all enjoy the brilliant comedy, first class performances and captivating plot.

3 out of 5 stars Intriguing Disappointment...Must be Kevin Smith.......2007-05-31

Dogma is not a bad movie, but it's not a good one. It began with some sharp satire, got preachy in the middle (all the arrogant religions only see a little bit of the truth but the humble and wise Kevin Smith sees the whole picture - the standard elephant and the blind men fallacy) and ended like most of Smith's efforts...unevenly. If Kevin Smith was a chess player he would have one of the world's best opening games, a slightly below average middle game and a horrid end game. Oh, and if you are going to make a religious satire, please don't include 3 extended diatribes expounding `correct' pluralistic religious perspective. Satire should preach subversively not didactically.

5 out of 5 stars Dogma Delivers.......2007-05-19

This won't fly with overly sensitive religious people. Excellent humor, this movie is one you will want to share with friends and watch again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......2007-09-07

Unbelievable! That's about all I can say. I heard this guy was good, but I've never seen him play and this is the first thing of his that I've ever purchased. The preciseness and power of his technique goes beyond any keyboard player that I've ever witnessed in my lifetime.
Absolutely amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Ridiculously incredible. Absolutely authoritative........2007-06-03

Current 3rd party price $138 ? I just got this for under $30, I won't say from where, but it was not that difficult, from a huge online vendor that rhymes with Freeway. Anyway, this is one of the top 5 piano DVD's of all time. I'll bet you you $150 Gould in 1981 played this music BETTER than J.S. Bach ever did. This Bruno, who made these awesome classical music films, thank you sir. If you dig Bach and you like extremely masterful piano playing, you already have this!

5 out of 5 stars A Stunning Goldberg.......2007-03-19

We are fortunate to count three Goldberg's recorded by Gould. It is quite astonishing to watch this rendition compared to his earlier 1955 recording which most critics seem to call the "Gold" standard for this piece. Seeing Gould perform this piece in this new way with a clear linkage between the variations is something not present in the earlier release where each variation seems to stand on its own. Another big plus is that there is very little humming compared to earlier Gould and thus much less distraction to this amazing performance. I would call your attention to something not much taught in concervatories these days -- finger substitution--watch Gould's technique. ALso, he apparently play the Goldberg's completely through without stop--something contrary to his "normal" practice of combining bits and pieces of different takes to produce what you hear on a CD. Stunning photography, exquisite performance and outstanding sound make this a must-have for any musician. Observe the passion!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2006-08-05

I bought this DVD new on ebay--one seller has it almost always listed--for only $39.95 brand new. The DVD is pure amazement. I've watched it over and over and over. You'll see the best Bach student ever molding the masters work. Don't pay crazy prices here...keep looking on ebay unless the prices come down here.

5 out of 5 stars I'm one of the lucky few who own this rare DVD!.......2006-06-01

This is a must have if you love Bach and Glenn Gould. This is a very informal recital. Gould was wearing casual clothes and his 9' YAMAHA CFIII concert grand's fall board was removed. During the interview, Gould did not even wear his shoes and camera closed up his dark socks. Quite funny to see a renowned concert pianist with such an informal setting.

Yes, that's a former Beatle in caveman costume for this more-dumb-than-funny 1981 comedy about a prehistoric misfit (Ringo Starr) who recruits other misfits to start a new tribe. The jokes about flatulence and sex are banal, but the cast of then-unfamiliar faces is fun to watch from the perspective of history. The best thing going are some dinosaur special effects, though Ringo might argue meeting his future wife (Barbara Bach) was a good deal. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars It's not my type of comedies.......2007-06-27

The picture quality is good.
The people in this movie do not speak any language at all. They make some vocal sound but it's not English because it's supposed to happen long time ago. This does not bother me. I found very few funny moments in this film. Probably, it's not my type of comedies.

5 out of 5 stars the Best Comedy forever.......2007-01-20

Very nice movie from 1981 which was remastered in 2002. It's good thing for home DVD collection. You need no translation for "cave" language, because everything is funny and understandable.

Sure, the dinosaurs look a little ridiculous, but that makes them comical. Great acting, tons of laughs, etc. Get it. You'll love it.

Totally silly and hilarious movie. Starring some people you never thought would be in a movie together, such as Ringo Starr, Dennis Quaid and Shelly Long. I saw this movie originally as a kid and could'nt wait for it to arrive on DVD. Now that it's here it's now a family favorite. There are some scenes not appropriate for children but those are light and few.

one of my favorite movies, lots of memorable quotes and scenes. don't miss Barbara Bach's "attributes" and the giant mosquito! it's a movie you'll enjoy with your family, your buddies, or just by yourself! it's a "gotta have it" movie.

Tom Selleck gives a restrained yet powerful performance as General Dwight D. Eisenhower in Ike: Countdown to D-Day. This made-for-cable feature focuses on the solemn, brilliant but plain-speaking Ike as he fine-tunes, over 90 days, tactical and political concerns involved with the Allies' imminent D-Day invasion of Normandy, i.e., America and Britain's long-awaited joint assault against Nazi-occupied Europe. A strong cast--James Remar as General Omar Bradley, Timothy Bottoms as Ike's assistant, Walter Bedell "Beetle" Smith--anchors the film's mesmerizing, blow-by-blow account of Eisenhower's leadership under the shadow of many uncertainties (predicting the weather for D-Day becomes a suspenseful refrain) and pressure from conflicting egos (Montgomery, DeGaulle, Patton). Ian Mune is a delight as a wary, darkly bemused Churchill, who encourages Ike's strategy of supreme leadership and low-key diplomacy. The script by Lionel Chetwynd (DC 9/11: Time of Crisis) captures the unbearable tension of commencing the invasion--and awaiting the results. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A portrait of the supreme allied commander.......2007-09-13

Not quite a documentary, and not quite an action-packed war movie. This is more of a behind-the-scenes look at General Dwight D. Eisenhower from the time he was made the supreme commander to the time he got notice that casualties were less than were expected (D-Day was successful).

Tom Selleck portrays Eisenhower and does a great job. It's hard to know if Eisenhower presented himself in the same manner (such as when the general has a "discussion" with Patton about his behavior), but his mannerisms in showing the internal struggle in making the decisions that would change the path of the war was fabulous. Watching him handle the many personalities involved was interesting, but given the movie's length, I didn't get as much interplay as I would have liked.

This film may not hold the attention of someone wanting to watch a typical war film, but for military history buffs or people wanting a glimpse of an under-appreciated historical figure, I would recommend this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great performance by Selleck.......2007-08-01

I was quite surprised by this movie - and wonder why we haven't heard more about it. The only reason I can think of is that one needs a certain level of foreknowledge of the politics of the time to understand some of the political nuances. This is something the average younger viewer won't have - even though we're all generally familiar with D Day, etc. Ike had to do much more than oversee the planning of an invasion force.

The only drawback (a big one) is the complete lack of perspective from the opposing side. The professional German Officer corps is never shown. Instead, the focus is on the Allied effort and associated politics. It still rates 5 Stars in my opinion.

The shining star is Selleck. SUPERB performance! He makes the movie. Actor playing Montgomery is very good too.

5 out of 5 stars Ike's Story.......2007-04-01

Tom Selleck is absolutely convincing as General "Ike" Eisenhower, leader of the Allied Expeditionary Force counting down the days to the invasion of Europe in the spring of 1944. This made-for-cable movie has solid production values, authentic period detail, and a cast that recreates the many strong personalities Ike had to manage to pull off the liberation of Europe from the Nazis. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Field Marshal Montgomery; American Generals Bradley, Patton, and Smith; and French self-appointed savior DeGaulle are authentically captured as contending parties in the final planning for the invasion.

Above all else, the movie portrays the enourmous pressures on Ike to balance the needs of the Allied military forces against challenges of weather, terrain, resources, and politics. The final days of the countdown, as Ike waits for a break in the weather that may never come, and considers the human costs of a botched operation, are incredibly tense.

Among other highlights of the movie: Ike's productive but sometimes trying relationship with Churchill, who understood the realities of the war but was ocassionally swept away by his own enthusiasms. Another is Ike's necessity to discipline an American staff officer who talks out of turn about the invasion and must be sent home in disgrace. Still another is Ike's visit to an American airborne unit on the ever of the invasion.

This short movie is highly recommended to fans of the World War II genre and to fans of Tom Selleck.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad But Lacks Muscle.......2007-03-16

Magnum PI as Ike? Credit to Tom Selleck: his understated Ike portrayal is far more complex and engaging than the bland, amiable Ike conveyed by most Ike biographies. Selleck's performance truly shone.

Generally, the film is evenly paced and provides a cursory but informative view of one aspect of high command in WW2. Yet it has flaws. For instance, the supporting cast is, frankly, somewhat weak (except for the splendid actor who played pesky Monty). The film also deviates from some plainly known facts. Bedell Smith is portrayed as a softie sounding board and feel-good chum, not as the ruthless, vain, and superbly efficient SOB he was. Putting those quibbles aside, the film allows an enjoyable, visual break for anyone tired of reading history.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Magnum as Ike?.......2006-11-10

At first I thought the idea was a little odd, but Tom Selleck proves he is a fine actor of unappreciated caliber. You come away from watching this movie with a better appreciation of Selleck's acting abilities and with a sense of what Eisenhower went through during those final days counting down to D-Day.
Well researched and accurate, and wonderfully filmed and acted.

Designed for infants and toddlers (1 to 36 months), Baby Bach is a nicely produced video that features recognizable, familiar toys and colorful objects, moving to the complexly beautiful music of Johann Sebastian Bach. According to the video producers, "Bach's music has shown to enhance creativity, improve academic achievement, reduce anxiety and heighten mental awareness." Any parent will embrace this theory. Not only did this video completely captivate a 22-month-old for its entire 30-minute run-time, but it's easy on the parents, too. The images are lively, clean, and sharp, and producers The Baby Einstein Company have a firm handle on what interests babies and toddlers. The extraneous segments with two pretty little blonde girls is silly, but forgivable. Given that most children elect to watch a video repeatedly, this is one that parents won't mind in the slightest. The music, available on CD, is simply lovely. --N.F. Mendoza

5 out of 5 stars Love BABY BACH music video.......2007-04-06

The images are simple with a lot of contrast for little eyes to focus on. My 5 month old son especially loves it when the children appear on screen; he goos and giggles. He has favorite parts, the animated 'singers' and the live children. I appreciate that he is listening to Bach even though it may not be an actual symphony playing the music. I know his mind is being stimulated. My husband & I watch this with him and tell him what he is looking at to put words with the items.

5 out of 5 stars A Must.......2007-04-02

If you aren't aware of Baby Einstein...you're living under a rock!! My baby actually "watched" this at 6 weeks!! As a person who works with children who are developmentally challenged, I highly recommend this video. In my opinion, all babies should watch this once a day to help stimulate brain development!!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-08-18

This is one of the best music specials ever made. I remember watching on TV when it was first shown and recorded and watched it over and over and over. Below are the tracks and featured artists:

Boppin' the Blues (Carl Perkins)
Put Your Cat Clothes On (Perkins)
Honey Don't (Ringo Starr)
Matchbox (Eric Clapton)
Mean Woman Blues (Eric Clapton)
Turn Around (Carl Perkins)
Going to Jackson (Rosanne Cash)
What Kind of Girl (Cash)
Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby (George Harrison)
Your True Love (Perkins/Harrison/Edmunds)
The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise (Perkins)
Medley: (All)
Thats Alright Mama
Blue Moon of Kentucky
Night Train to Memphis
Glad all Over (All)
Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On (All)
Gone All Down The Line (All)
Blue Suede Shoes (All) & Encore

To pick highlights is very difficult because its all great. But for me the rare appearance of George Harrison is an absolute treat. Eric Clapton plays some truly blistering guitar solos, that put all the other guitar players into the shade, and Carl Perkins admits as much himself.

However it is Carl Perkins who is the star of the show and its great to see him in prime form. My only reservation is the picture quality which is OK but could be a lot better.

If you like 50's Rock 'n' Roll and a hint of country than this is an absolutely essential purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Carl Perkins' Finest Hour...One of the Greatest Rock n' Roll shows ever filmed!!.......2007-03-03

I've had the VHS version of this classic rockabilly special for years, and the sound and picture quality are just fine. I'm wondering if this particular DVD is a newly remastered version of this show since the original DVD released in 2002 has many reviewers complaining about poor sound quality.

The legendary Carl Perkins is one of the often overlooked singer-songwriter-guitar players of early rock n' roll who had one big hit in the 1950's before a car crash stopped the momentum of his career right as it was taking off. He never achieved the popularity or recognition that his peers Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and Elvis achieved. This rockin' performance clearly shows he was in the same talent league as his better-known contemporaries. Recorded in London in October of 1985, this priceless concert is Carl Perkins' finest hour! At 54 years old, Carl's musical powers were at an all-time high in this show. His country-rock vocal delivery and trademark rockabilly guitar licks are more potent here than they were in his younger days.

Few concert videos capture the sheer joy of playing music on stage like this show does. When I saw this for the first time over ten years ago, I was blown away by the joy and spirit of the music that literally jumps off the screen until you find yourself watching it over and over. The music here, wonderfully directed by Dave Edmonds, is quite simply as good as rock n' roll gets. The musicians did a great job of recreating Perkins' classic songs in their original arrangements while making them rock like never before. When all is said and done, this masterpiece should be hailed as one of the greatest rock n' roll shows ever captured on film!

The real beauty of this concert is the almost magical effect that Carl's presence had on all his famous guests. George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Dave Edmunds, and Roseanne Cash give some of the best performances of their careers as Carl's spirit and enthusiasm brings out the best in everybody on the stage! George and Ringo have never sounded better, and seem more inspired here than they were with the Beatles. Ringo's drumming is rock steady, and Harrison shines like never before as he shows just how well he could play rockabilly guitar.

Eric Clapton's segment is dynamite as we watch him unleash some of the hottest solos he has ever played. Clapton TEARS IT UP on guitar during "Mean Woman Blues", and Carl's amazed reaction to Eric is priceless! Watch closely for a great moment during "Matchbox" when Carl jumps back in disbelief while watching Eric rip into his first solo. I love it!!

This show is pure joy from start to finish, but the best is saved for last with a truly FANTASTIC performance of "Blue Suede Shoes" that is nothing more than rock n' roll at its joyful best!! Anybody who still associates this song with Elvis needs to hear Perkins tear into it with his heart and soul in this performance. It is worth the price of the DVD alone to see Carl and his friends rock their hearts out with the audience dancing all over the place. George Harrison is so caught up in the music that he suddenly leads the band into a rousing encore of the song. Dave Edmonds sums up the electricity of the moment as he turns to Carl and shouts "ROCK IT MAN!"

The most touching moment comes after the music has ended when Perkins is moved to tears of joy while giving a heartfelt thank you to everyone there. The warmth and sincerity of the man is truly admirable as he showers each and every guest with kind words of praise throughout the show.

The music world lost a fine musician and human being when Carl Perkins passed away in 1998. This unforgettable show will stand as a great tribute to his spirit, music, influence, and talent. If you love Roy Orbison's "Black and White Night", Chuck Berry's "Hail Hail Rock n' Roll", or just good-time rock n' roll at its best, this DVD is a MUST-HAVE for your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Rock Your Blue Suede Shoes Or Your Beatle Boots Off.......2007-02-05

As an inveterate, avid, intense Beatle fan, I was thoroughly delighted with this dvd! Hats off to Carl Perkins not only for being a driving force during the inception of Rock & Roll, but for influencing George Harrison! George Harrison ROCKED! He tore the place up with his guitar playing! If you think he sounded phenomenal on this dvd, be sure to listen to "Beatles Live at the BBC" and George's guitar playing sets the place on fire! Check him out on "Youngblood!"

Although the transfer ain't great, the music and the artists are. Ringo keeps a steady beat and his former bandmate, the nonpareil George Harrison will have you rockin' your blue suede shoes or your Beatle boots off! His revival of his 1965 cover of "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby" brought many smiles to many faces. Gear up that 1963 Ford Falcon and take a trip to 1965 with George!

If you love Rock & Roll, the Blues and some EXCEPTIONAL guitar playing, this is the dvd for you. It is just plain fun and you will find yourself singing along with it and don't be surprised if you find you've started dancing!

Jeff Bridges actually corralled an Oscar nomination for his spirited, oddball performance in this genre crime story, directed by first-timer Michael Cimino who (a short two films later) would bring down a studio with Heaven's Gate. Clint Eastwood plays a bank robber par excellence with a flair for explosives who is being hunted by his former partners, who think he has their loot from their last job. Bridges is his eager apprentice and sidekick, who helps him escape; when Eastwood finally makes peace with his hunters, Bridges convinces them to try a daring robbery--but things inevitably go awry. The relationship between Eastwood and Bridges is both funny and touching in this, one of Eastwood's better post-Dirty Harry efforts. --Marshall Fine

Description

Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges (in an OscarÂ(r) nominated* performance) star as an off-beat pair of modern-day outlaws in this bold, action-packed crime thriller. Featuring outstanding supporting performances by George Kennedy (Airport), Gary Busey (Lethal Weapon) and Geoffrey Lewis (Maverick), it's a crisp, well-written, witty, tough [and] superbly cast caper movie (Cinebooks). John 'thunderbolt Doherty (Eastwood) is a former thief whose razor-sharp wits and steely nerves made him a master of his profession, but he's about to reenter the criminal world with a new partner: Lightfoot (Bridges), a brash young drifter whose energy and exuberance give the veteran a new outlook on life. Their target: the seemingly impenetrable Montana Armored Depository. After forming an uneasy alliance with Thunderbolt's former partners in crime (Kennedy and Lewis),they launch an amazing scheme that will test the limits of their endurance...and the power of theirfriendship. Fueled by explosive action, fascinating characters and a powerfully moving climax, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot is an adventure of the highest caliber. *1974: Supporting Actor

4 out of 5 stars Cimino first triumphant debut..........2007-01-15

The very first shot of "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" - a faultless composition, fifty per cent wispy Idaho sky, fifty per cent cornfield - establishes an elegant style which Cimino maintains throughout the film... The second scene - Clint Eastwood as we have never seen him before, wearing spectacles, his hair slicked back and dressed as a vicar delivering a sermon in a crowded country church - immediately makes one realize that the film may be quite different from any of Eastwood's previous ones... But the third scene, in which the vicar is chased across a seemingly endless cornfield by an irate gun-firing George Kennedy establishes that all is not as it seems to be...

Eastwood is rescued by Lightfoot (Jeff Bridges), who has just relieved a car salesman of $3000 dollars' worth of automobile, and a partnership is quickly created, with the veteran Thunderbolt asserting his experience and virility over the inexperienced Lightfoot... Casting off his vicar's clothes Thunderbolt then takes his belt and endures agonizing pain as he uses it to pull his dislocated shoulder into place...

Thunderbolt is being pursued by Red Leary (George Kennedy) and Eddie Goody (Geoffrey Lewis) who are former partners of his in crime and who believe he has the half million dollar takings from their last bank raid... They mean business... While Thunderbolt and Lightfoot enjoy themselves with two young ladies named Gloria and Melody, Leary and Goody wait outside. 'Are you sure that's their car?' wonders Goody. 'That's their hearse,' says Leary...

The film was a triumphant debut for Cimino... His script combined wit and the naive philosophy of the motorized cowboys... 'Leary, I had a dream about you last night." "About what?" "I dreamt you said hello to me.'

At the beginning of the film when Eastwood recites his sermon for the benefit of his felonious friend, 'and the lion shall lie down with the leopard' (Cimino used it purposely to indicate the liaison between Lightfoot the lion and Thunderbolt the leopard), the younger man asks 'What's that - a poem?' 'No,' replies Thunderbolt, 'a prayer'. At the end of the film the younger man is still seeking answers from his senior partner... 'Where you heading?' 'See what's over the next mountain! We won, didn't we?' 'I guess we did - for the time being.'

Cimino created the part for Eastwood and in doing so drew greatly on his actual personality... For those people who know the real Clint Eastwood, no film part better conveys the style, the warmth, and the dry delivery of the man himself...

4 out of 5 stars Strolling thunder.......2006-10-11

Diary of a movie from the viewer's point of view:

40-minute mark. I turn off the movie because I'm about to nod off. I still haven't got a handle on THUNDERBOLT AND LIGHTFOOT. It's either going to be a buddy movie, a chase movie, a caper movie, or it's going to continue to dawdle till they roll the closing credits. Sure is taking it's sweet time getting off the schneid. Con man/grifter Clint Eastwood met younger con man/grifter Jeff Bridges reels ago, they've stolen a couple of cars together, been chased by a gun-toting George Kennedy, and otherwise did the macho bonding thing. Not sure who is what, yet. Bridges' character, right before I nodded off, was wondrin' out loud what it would take to knock over a bank before Eastwood threw him a knowing sneer. So far pretty much no plot, little character development, and the usually reliable Bridges is mugging around so much I'm hoping that, at some point, Eastwood slaps him. Not at all sure I want to spent any more time with this one after I wake up.

Later - Hmmm. The nap seems to have helped both of us. I'm refreshed and the movie (finally) seems energized. THUNDERBOLT AND LIGHTFOOT takes its sweet, wallowing-in-ambience, time catching a plot, but when it does it turns into an above-average buddy/caper flick. Either Bridges toned it down some, or I grew used to him, but looking back on it he turns in a fine, affecting performance as a young drifter with grand dreams of grand larceny. Even Eastwood seems a little more relaxed than usual.

This is one of director Michael Cimino's first movies, and I'm not a fan of his. The Deer Hunter didn't do much for me, and I believe Heaven's Gate is justifiably infamous. I thought this was going to be another slow moving to nowhere picture, but the latter half is engrossing. Looks beautiful, too. Best of all was the ending - which I won't give away here - that Bridges plays to perfection and that brings it all home. If you're like me and tend to get impatient with pretty pictures going nowhere, I'll suggest you give this one a long chance before hitting the eject button. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Thunderbolt of Fun.......2006-05-22

When people talk about buddy-buddy films this one gets overlooked. This was a refreshing break from the Eastwood mold, stepping down from the Dirty Harry altar, to switch sides of the law or God(as a preacher). This has a loaded cast, Clint Eastwood, Jeff Bridges(Oscar nominee/robbed)to George Kennedy, as another evil meanie. The oddball teaming of Eastwood and Bridges seals the movie as an enjoyable romp, where cross-dressing,wearing disguises and other stuff plays second-hand to the relationship which is supposed to be mentor/rookie but becomes Laurel/Hardy too often. The story itself wanders off in various directions until it comes home with unexpected sadness, marking the arrival of the versatile Bridges.Like "Collateral," where Cruise lets Jamie Foxx run with the movie, Eastwood generously let Bridges vamp for effect. Such a free-wheelin' script has not hit the screen in a long while.

4 out of 5 stars Unlikely Buddies.......2006-03-20

This is not your average crime story. Clint Eastwood plays a man we first encounter as a preacher in a rural church. Shortly into the sermon, a gunman comes in and starts shooting at the preacher. He takes off running and eventually gets picked up by a young man played by Jeff Bridges. The two hit it off and become buddies, even though Eastwood's character is significantly older than Bridges'. Over time, it is learned that Eastwood had been a bank robber. After a big heist, the money disappeared and the people who are trying to kill him think that he stole it (from the other crooks). Eventually, they hit upon a scheme to rob the same bank in the same manner as before. The idea is that nobody would expect them to try and do things the same way again.

There is trouble with the other robbers. One is stupid and the other is just plain mean. After a successful heist, this leads to problems which the film must resolve.

Although the action line of the movie is the story of the bank robbery, it is really about the friendship between the two main characters. It can be touching to watch and is sad at the unexpected end. It's a rather dated film but it is still worth watching.

4 out of 5 stars Great Cast Sparks This Mid-70's Caper Film.......2006-02-04

Four years before "The Deer Hunter" and six years before the disastrous "Heaven's Gate," Michael Cimino broke through as a writer/director with this somewhat rambling but engaging and quirky heist film starring Clint Eastwood, Jeff Bridges, and George Kennedy. A bank robbery gone wrong has left Eastwood laying low, pretending to be a preacher in a small town. When an old partner hunts him down, he narrowly escapes with the help of a small-time thief named Lightfoot (Bridges). The two become partners, but are soon forced to join up with two more of Eastwood's old cronies (Kennedy and Geoffrey Lewis). Together, the four set about executing the same bank robbery that failed several years earlier.

Bridges received an Oscar nomination for his offbeat portrayal of a free-spirited and charismatic young con artist, while Kennedy is an angry, ticking time bomb that you just know will eventually explode and screw things up. Much of the film is light and comical, with a veiled commentary about the aimlessness of America's post-Vietnam generation. The ending is surprisingly poignant, however, and the movie features an underrated Eastwood performance and a great recurring Paul Williams song on the soundtrack. Look for early roles by Gary Busey as Bridges' boss on a construction crew, and Catherine Bach (the one and only Daisy Duke) as a girl Lightfoot rather creatively picks up at a bar.
